In this episode, I recap my experience at Fan Frontier's Power Con hosted at the Glasgow SEC! But what did we all think of the con? Was it worth the visit to see the guests there? And why was Mr Blobby AND SpongeBob SquarePants there?! All of this and more in this latest episode!

Introduction to Chatsunami

00:00:00
Speaker
Welcome to Chatsunami, a Scottish variety podcast that discusses topics from gaming and films to anime and general interest. Join me, your host, Satsunami, as well as the rest of our Chatsunami team for our takes on these very important pop culture topics. Sir, it's clearly a trap. I accept copyright! That happens three times in the film. Every time that general goes, don't do this one thing, he goes, do you know what I'm going to do? That's exactly...
00:00:27
Speaker
It doesn't well. She had the pointy teeth. What was that about? She looked like Bilbo when he wants the ring back. ah She did, didn't she? I just want the lightsaber one more time. Parasite says, no, you will get back into your office and work. No, says the man in Zoom. yeah Trousers are for the working man.
00:00:47
Speaker
You're bursting into your hotel room. Honey, we need to go. Leave the kids. You can milk an odysl. Oh!
00:00:58
Speaker
That's the worst thing you've ever said on any of the epi episodes. If that sounds like your cup of tea, then you can check us out at our website, chattsunami.com, as well as all good podcast apps. As always, stay safe, stay awesome, and most importantly, stay hydrated.

Excitement for Fan Frontiers Power Con

00:01:26
Speaker
a Hello Pandalorians and welcome back to Chadtsunami. My name's Sadtsunami and today I am excited to tell you all about my experience last weekend at Fan Frontiers Power Con. Now, for those of you who don't know, I've been going to these cons for a while now and it wasn't until recently that I started doing some content creation work for them.
00:01:46
Speaker
Mainly I would meet up with my friend, co-host and of course wrestler extraordinaire, Martin McAllister, where we would recap our thoughts about the con. Every time, it has been an absolute blast, and I honestly could not recommend it more for any of my Scottish Pandalorians listening. Granted, my journey to PowerCon started a tad chaotic, where I was forced to battle one of Glasgow's most infamous foes. That of course being the Rhodes. But eventually, after a few wrong turns here and there, I made it safely to the con, hosted at the Glasgow SEC.

Challenges of the Con

00:02:20
Speaker
Now, I feel a little sorry for the organizers here as they were hit with a triple whammy of busy. First there was a dance competition going on in one of the adjacent halls. Machine Gun Kelly was preparing to play at the Hydro and last but certainly not least, the Old Firm match was in full swing on the other side of the city. And for those of you who don't know what the old firm is, let's just say it's one of Glasgow's most heated football rivalries which would explain why there were so many people wearing blue and green tops walking in the other direction of the con.
00:02:52
Speaker
Eventually I made it in one piece and let me tell you, it was definitely worth it from the outstanding cosplayers, artists and usual vendors It was surprisingly packed. Even on a Sunday, which is usually when weekend cons wind down, even the after party the night before didn't seem to do anything to impact the amount of people there. As always, the staff were extremely friendly and helpful in directing people on where to go. One thing I do want to say though is that I never really expected Mr. Blobby to be roaming around the con, nor the return of SpongeBob SquarePants who, if you remember our experience with Epic Comic Con last year, was also prominent in beating up several wrestlers single-handedly.

Erica Schroeder's Voice Acting Career

00:03:33
Speaker
Move over Doom Slayer, because we have the Sponge Slayer here.
00:03:39
Speaker
While I unfortunately was only able to make it on the Sunday, I managed to see a bunch of amazing stalls. Huge shout out in particular to Dead Medals and Higglebees, who I managed to buy some stickers from and will definitely be adding them to the collection. Afterwards, we found ourselves heading over to the main stage where we got to see a really interesting thing interview with the one and only Erica Schroeder. whose voice acting credits are extensive, from Luffy and the 4Kids dub of One Piece, My Valentine and Yu-Gi-Oh, and countless Pokémon credits. It was fascinating to hear about the different aspects of voice acting from her, but of course, in and typical Glasgow fashion, the hosts couldn't let their guests leave without learning a bit of Scots. And as luck would have it, I did manage to record a bit of this interaction, so yeah, let's have a listen. Now, Veronica is my Scottish correspondent because I myself am half English, half Irish. But we wanted to ask you if you would like to try some Scots dialect and maybe try and decipher some fun Scots phrases. Oh, I get to decipher and pronounce? Oh, I'm so excited for this. Yes, I am down for this challenge. I hope I don't suck.
00:04:50
Speaker
Be nice to me. We're going to really nice to here you. I think you've got this. So, Veronica, I'd like to hand over to you, please. Our first phrase is, hot
00:04:59
Speaker
Harderwisht. Oh, that was good! But I don't know what that means. Veronica, would you like to share? Harderwisht means be quiet. Really? In the polite sense, be quiet and do not speak anymore. How would you say it if you were like, really wanted someone to be quiet? Harderwisht. Harderwisht. You heard me. Nice job. I liked it. Our next one is... Drit. Drit.
00:05:27
Speaker
Dreech. Dreech. It means, uh, unpleasantly. Dreech. Like... It's grey, isn't it's crazy real it? It's grey outside. It's moist. It's Dreechweather.
00:05:39
Speaker
It's Dreechweather. Oh, you're so good at this. Wow. For real? Yeah, no, I'm really... Are you? Yeah. I'm really impressed, yeah. Okay, okay, okay. Oxtus. Oxtus. That sounded a little bit Sean Connery there. That one, didn't it? He's got that...
00:05:55
Speaker
Can we have it one more time? Oxtrish. Oxtrish. It's like an oxtridge on steroids. Is that what it means? No. We're gonna be further. This one's through me. I moved up here 12 years ago and somebody said this in passing and I was so confused. I thought it was a type of soup. And when you're about to find out what it is, it's very much a type of soup. Oh no, what it?
00:06:18
Speaker
Oxtrish is armpit. I never would have guessed that. Now, while there were many more examples put forward by both the interviewers and congoers alike, it was a truly great interview. I also couldn't leave PowerCon of course without asking Martin about what he thought overall. So without any further ado, and to be honest this is becoming a bit of a Chatsunami tradition when we do these episodes, let's switch back to the con and find out what else we

Martin McAllister's Experience at Power Con

00:06:45
Speaker
got up to. Hello everybody and welcome to PowerCon. I am of course joined by none other than the one and only wrestler extraordinaire slash convention enthusiast. I was wondering what I was going to get blamed for there. know, I was trying to think. I was going through the list here. Martin McAllister here with me at the Glasgow SEC at PowerCon. Yeah, Martin... How are you doing today? Oh, I'm doing great. You know, love these Fan Frontier Comic Cons. We are back for another one on site today. i'm having a great time. Yeah, it's been absolutely, well, fantastic, but also absolutely mobbed. I think it's the technical term.
00:07:18
Speaker
Absolutely. And usually for these two day cons, the second day seems bit quieter, a bit more relaxed. But today's been just as busy as it has been any other time. Yeah, no, absolutely. Because unfortunately, unlike the epic Comic Con that we went to last September, can't believe it was that long ago, but we were there over the weekend. I mean, you must have felt it more because you were wrestling that time. But this time, you've just been doing some really promotion content creation, that kind of thing this time. No slamming people into the ring this time. No fighting SpongeBob, although SpongeBob is here. If you look at our socials, yeah. I'm not going to say, oh yeah, overlaid on this class. It's just Spongebob wagging his nose up and down.
00:07:58
Speaker
Yeah, it's been absolutely fantastic. But yeah, unfortunately, neither of us were here here yesterday. But of course, we were here today. And it's one of those funny cons, isn't it? Where when I came in, because I came in after you, you were the early bird today. But when I came in, there was also another con going on next door, or rather a competition. But as I was walking by, I was kind of like, oh, that doesn't look like PowerCon now. And then it's like, oh no, you have to go to Hall 3. So it's like, go further, go further. In fact, ironically enough, I think this is where the Tutankhamun, you know, experience was. It was, yes. I know. Shout out to my boy Tutankhamun. Taking time. Taking, what, a thousand two thousand years? I thought I beat Tutankhamun you would have loved PowerCon.
00:08:41
Speaker
Put up a selfie. One of these days I'm going to kill myself of those stupid coins. Oh, God. But of course, we saw bunch of different guests today. We saw lot of different panels, didn't We saw, it Erica Schroeder? Yep. Totally not peaking on the I was just double checking. was just checking. was like, that's definitely her surname. Yeah, she's been a voice actor for like 80 or something different. Pokemon. She was like, that was one of the best panels. Our friend, Common Cat Wolf, was hosting the panel as well. And yeah, Erica Shodden has voiced over 80 different Pokemon for the TV show. She's voiced a bunch of characters in games that you have played. Yeah. And like, it was really interesting. She's talked a bit about herself. was technique and how to talk and like how she gets on Broadway and how she does voices. It's really, genuinely one of the best panels I've ever been to in any Comic-Con. If you go into a Comic-Con with her at it, 100% go see her talk because that was fascinating and fantastic.

Erica Schroeder's Panel Highlights

00:09:29
Speaker
Yeah. No I agree it was so informative as well especially with all the Eevee chat as well. Turns out that Glasgow is indeed Eevee based city according to public vote of nine people. But no it was it was a fantastic panel overall and yeah we had a bunch of fantastic guests which I have to say I'm not going to lie and say yeah I went to every panel and things. I didn't get time unfortunately but you know you had Samuel Rokin who's the voice of Ghost in the new Call of Duty games which honestly I did pass by his table and I was just like, that's the voice of ghosts over there, you know. There's Tim Downey, of course, Amelia Tyler, Kirstie Ryder as well, which I'm sure you'll go over to say hello at some point. So I have suddenly been struck with being the world's shyest man. Yeah. And I have not spoken to her today. was saying I was going to, and I don't know why, I've just become incredibly shy, despite being on stage multiple times. Actually, I'm going to say yesterday, but no, today I've just said I'm the world's shyest man. I'm just a guy. We're just normal podcasters. We're just normal men. What you mean? Innocent men.
00:10:28
Speaker
ah But no, it's been absolutely fantastic because of course we've gone around to all the different stalls and things. i can't believe I'm saying that like this. We had an absolutely banging, well, we had a vegan sausage roll, we had the chicken tikka one. That was banging. I can't even remember the name of the place, but shoot. I won't lie. I was so hungry. I couldn't see or read. It's just a blur. But, you know, we've been down the vendors alley and the artists alley and you'll see it online and through all the other people's pictures. You know, they've got a massive gaming area, which I have to say, considering that the Xbox is, want to say, about 20, 21 years old now. Well, the Xbox is 60. The reason I'm bringing this up is because in the arcades, they build it as a retro yeah gaming arcade. yeah i mean i'm not happy about it i've got that so that's been absolutely fantastic to be able to see people you know enjoy the classics because they had the pac-man machine and all the other machines like that they had a massive game boy as well and it's really funny don't know where that's come from yeah and the massive ps1 controller sonic is back i'm pretty sure that's the same sonic i've got my picture beside a couple of years ago i'm gonna say yeah i've worked with him a few times so yeah it's the same guy he does he tours yeah i know you can see the years just these eyes between that between the turnout with the cosplayers and such i think powercon has kind of been hit with a triple whammy this weekend because as i said there's a competition going on next door and that is absolutely mobbed you've got powercon of course and then you've got the old firm in glasgow yeah stoltic versus rangers half of glasgow's there and the other half seems to be here so yeah i mean Yeah, a wee side tangent here, and I won't moan about it too much, but it was a nightmare driving here. Just purely because the amount of police that are directing traffic and everything. Certain places where I usually park saying, no, you're not allowed to park here, bog off. Signage is not great in Glasgow. But other than that, 10 out of 10 con, that's obviously not a bad person. That would be my metal band Rage Against the Council.
00:12:25
Speaker
but Yeah, you'll probably have heard a recap, you know, before we dived into this. But as always, Fan Frontiers is such a

Fan Frontiers Expansion Plans

00:12:32
Speaker
fantastic con. And there will be more throughout the year, won't there? I think actually the Fan Frontiers is like really branching out this year, which is cool. i was at this one last week, quite a low-key, more like a pop-up market. So I went to Glasgow Comic Fair last week and bought two very cool comics. I bought Godzilla vs Hulk and I bought Godzilla Heist comic as well. So that was really cool. But yeah, they're doing toy fairs, they're doing comic fairs. And then they've got like the bigger cons. So they've got Kaiju coming up next in May. And three big wrestling shows over in Edson House. So they've got learning their own wrestling now. So that's what I've been here promoting today. 17th of April. Super Slam. So really looking forward to that. Yeah, just a big calendar up ahead this year. i'm Really, really putting the boots to the ground. I can't wait. Beyond the four main ones that they do, we've got KaijuCon, which is on the 16th of May. You've got Epic Comic Con, which of course we'll be returning to on the 26th and 27th of September. And of course you've got KoyoCon, which is on the 24th of October. Not to mention, as you said, the wrestling shows, Super Slam, Victory Royale, Iron Kingdom too. It's going to be great, isn't it? Yeah, and it's fun because it's as much as busy as Fan Frontier is, it's still people we know. It's local base, it's people on the ground that we actually can meet and stuff. It's a bit different to these massive corporation comic cons and stuff. But yeah, we've been walking about, I've bought some stuff, you've bought some stuff, my wife was in, she bought some stuff. I'm actually glad there's only four you. hope they don't do too many more because ah yeah my wallet can't take it. If you could get some more sponsors and We can maybe Yeah true That is very true So if you want to sign up Patreon.com forward slash chat tsunami You're paying directly For us to go to Comic Con Ah suckers
00:13:59
Speaker
Where's the off button? No, no joke. But no jokes aside, yeah. It's fantastic. Definitely go support the Fan Frontier Comic Cons because it's a whole bunch of amazing people, you know, and they put on just such a fantastic show. So 10 out of 10, would recommend. And yeah I'm not just saying that because they invited me back. Oh, cool. But yeah, 10 out of 10, definitely go check it out if you're the Glasgow area. And as I said, go to, i think it's forthefans.uk. You'll get more information there than what we are telling you. They'll be able to tell you ticket prices, when the next shows are going to be, who's guesting and so on and so forth. And yeah, I think that's about it. Is there anything you want to add before we wrap up? No, and we've got about 15-20 minutes before doors closing here and I want to go back and look at everything else. So yeah see you later, guys. Yeah, let's speed run. I praise Fan Frontiers a lot, and for good reason. With the loss of MCM Comic Con roughly six years ago, Fan Frontier has stepped up to fill that Comic Con hole left in Glasgow, and they've only gone from strength to strength since. As Martin and I discussed there, for the wrestling fans, the Super Slam event will be hosted on the 17th of April. This will be followed by KaijuCon on the 16th of May, then Epic Comic Con on the 26th and 27th of September, and finally KoyoCon on the 24th of October. There's also a lot of smaller events that they're involved in, but definitely check out their website, www.forthefans.uk, for further information. And without any further ado, thank you all so much for listening to this episode of Chatsunami. As always, a huge shout out once again to Fan Frontier for inviting me back to be a content creator. It is, as always, a pleasure. If you would like to hear about our past Connie experiences on the podcast, as well as the rest of our episodes where we discuss things from gaming and films to anime and general interests, then you can check us out at our website Chatsanami.com as well as all good podcast apps. A huge shout out to our Pandalorian patrons, Robotic Battle Toaster, Ghostie and Cryptic 1991. Thank you so much for the support.
