Inception of 'Based on a Book'

00:00:07
Speaker
Welcome to another bonus episode of Based on a Book. We realized through all of our full episodes of adaptations, we never really talked about how we started this podcast or how each of us really got our start into reading and watching the genres we love today.
00:00:22
Speaker
perhaps we once loved back then wouldn't evoke the same feelings if we experienced it now. So we want to take this time in season two to talk about how, talk about that and also kind of reintroduce ourselves.
00:00:35
Speaker
So kind of want to start with the background of our podcast and how it started. Basically, the three of us work together. Believe it or not, we've actually never met in person.
00:00:49
Speaker
Never. Never. not Only virtually because we all work from home. And we don't even live in the same town. Not even close. Not even close to each other.

Inspiration from a Failed Book Club

00:00:58
Speaker
And one day at work, we all were part of what was an attempt at work book club.
00:01:06
Speaker
You know, building culture, team building, everything. Yes. An attempt. They tried. we and I think it was picking between employees' choices of books, and it was Lindsay's pick.
00:01:27
Speaker
For our book club. To be fair. Apparently like every book submitted. Got like one vote. And Lindsay's got two. Yeah. like it was now yeah Thanks other vote. yeah i don't know who you were. But thanks.
00:01:43
Speaker
It was probably me because I didn't know what any of were. And I just picked a random one. It was we need to do something. By Max Booth. And so we all read it.
00:01:55
Speaker
And all the three of us and one other person had participated. and it was the most ridiculous book we had ever read. And we were like, let's watch the movie.
00:02:08
Speaker
So we all had watched the movie as well. And then all came into this book club to talk about

Practicing Podcasting

00:02:13
Speaker
it. Not knowing that it was just going to be the four of us. yeah We all fully thought that there was going to be like 10 to 12, maybe 15 people. Because there were about 20 invited.
00:02:24
Speaker
yeah And it was the three of us and Miss Donna, who knows, i'm probably going to say her name. I told her probably would. So she was the only other one who showed up.
00:02:35
Speaker
And we were all just like, should we wait for other people? Yeah. We were like, let's just get into it. And we were talking for so long about this book and this movie. And then the three of us kind of got super close.
00:02:50
Speaker
And we just bonded over our... love for books and our love for movies. And I think, I don't know, maybe think it was Lindsay who yeah came to us with this idea of doing a podcast talking about books and their adaptations.
00:03:09
Speaker
Yep. And we were like, let's freaking do this. Let's

Evolution and Growth

00:03:15
Speaker
make a podcast. And like one day we're like, let's start meeting. And, and we started practicing We would literally meet on like Zoom calls and stuff and be like, let's practice. Yep.
00:03:28
Speaker
Let's pick a book. Let's pretend we're doing it. Yeah. And we did Rebecca. And then we did... um That was our first lesson. Don't pick really, really long books. Yeah. And then we did...
00:03:39
Speaker
Oh my gosh. Curious case. Yep. Benjamin Button. Yeah. And we did that. And we were just like, let's just practice and pretend like we're doing a podcast right now. And we did. And we were so nervous and we were freaking out. And I was like, I'm just going to press record and just pretend like we're just not doing a podcast right now.
00:03:57
Speaker
And I was just like, see, look, we're recording and look, we're still fine. We're still okay. We're just talking to each other right now. Nothing's No one's crying. yeah Flash forward. We cry all the time. Yeah. yeah And we were so freaked out. And then we're like, all right, that wasn't so bad.
00:04:15
Speaker
Let's freaking do this. And that's kind of how this podcast kind of started. So kind of want to get into each of us talking about kind of where our lore began of why we read what we read today or

Lindsay's Love for Thrillers

00:04:33
Speaker
watch what we watch today. Like why...
00:04:35
Speaker
You know, Lindsay, why you love horror, why you love your thrillers, Crystal, what got you into sci-fi? Where did the lore start? So, Lindsay, you want to start? ah Yeah, I can start.
00:04:48
Speaker
So, I'd have to say my love of books probably started with my sister. she used to read to me all the time. and My, more of my darker horror fascination comes from my other sister, who's really into true crime and scary movies. I used to stay at her house all the time, and we would watch scary movies together.
00:05:14
Speaker
When I started reading on my own, I really got into reading in middle school, and I started with some... More mature books. Not so middle school. Uh-huh. Yep. I started with the Anita Blake series. Ooh.
00:05:31
Speaker
Okay. Yeah. Middle school. Yeah. And it just kind of branched from there. Nice. So do you think that, like like, you're actively reading the Anita Blake series, are you?
00:05:45
Speaker
Still to this day, yes. Yeah. Do you think, does it still hold up from when you were younger? Yeah. It's definitely changed quite a bit, but the material is still there. yeah It's gotten more mature with me, so it works out.
00:05:59
Speaker
It's growing up with you. Oh, no.
00:06:04
Speaker
All right. What about you, Crystal?

Crystal's Sci-Fi and Fantasy Passion

00:06:06
Speaker
um For me, I spent, I grew up in the 80s and 90s. So we didn't have like internet in in everyone's house or anything like that. We didn't have like, there was cable, but not where I lived. We grew up in a very rural area. So we didn't have cable or anything out there.
00:06:22
Speaker
um And so we read a lot and we rented movies um and as kids. so that's kind of where I fell into like more of the classics for me, because like we only had so many books in the house when we would rent movies, it had to be something that everyone was going to like.
00:06:38
Speaker
um And i'm the oldest of five kids. So that's a, that's a tall order to fill. um You know, I had an excellent librarian um in my school library and she kind of,
00:06:51
Speaker
ushered me towards more of the like the Roald Dahl, like the witches and James and the Giant Peach and Matilda. And I think that's what kind of started my
00:07:04
Speaker
fascination with more of the fantasy type things, um you know, witches and magic with your mind and and stuff like that, um that I really loved. And of course, as I got into like middle school and high school, it was more about like dragons.
00:07:20
Speaker
And that's when I started watching our Trek, the next generation. And that's when I started getting introduced to science fiction.

Carrie's Reading Journey

00:07:27
Speaker
And so I really fell in love with things like iRobot and more of the like science genre in general so science fiction and fantasy was there from the very beginning and my love of classics was something that my family forced on me and now it's just comfortable so yeah that's that's that's my lore yeah oh okay what about you i i was really not a huge reader growing up
00:08:00
Speaker
I did have like, you know, my touch in my Twilight phase in the Twilight books. Like before that though, i wasn't really reading. Like I have like vague memories of like reading like the babysitters club.
00:08:17
Speaker
um I do have like, I was a big American girl doll person. Like I had my American girl dolls and they came with the little books. So I had like my American girl doll books. I love those.
00:08:30
Speaker
But I can't really remember really reading a ton, but my very first experience with like books that I really loved was like the Twilight series, and then I was binging like The Hunger Games. like I literally remember have like sitting on the couch, like, cannot stop holding like New Moon in my hands. like i'm like I'm addicted to it and obsessed.
00:08:55
Speaker
I literally can remember in my head... seeing the twilight paperback in this thrift shop it that in a thrift shop I was near when I grew up and just randomly picking it up having no idea what it was i can literally see it in my head and then coming home with it and then just that's where it started and like the vampire obsession started I've honestly I've said it a million and one times on this podcast a Buffy obsession mm-hmm And just like, I have a serious vampire obsession. And that's kind of like where that started. And then I just took a really long break from reading. I wasn't picking anything up at all.
00:09:39
Speaker
Like, and I was also like way at college and, you know, no, i it's really hard to read in college. And yeah i then i didn't pick up books again until two thousand nineteen is when i picked up books again and i Was like going through like some really tough times in my life.
00:10:00
Speaker
Mentally. And just like. Just going through some shit. And then. I just was like. picked up a book for the pure escapism, and it was the Mortal Instruments series by Cassandra Clare.
00:10:17
Speaker
And all of a sudden, was like, my brain exploded. oh my god. I've missed out.
00:10:28
Speaker
And I was like, what? like I want to say i' was like 23 something? 24? 24? three or something twenty four And I was like, my brain literally exploded.
00:10:41
Speaker
And I was like, I now need to consume everything I can get my hands on. Yep. I was like, Mortal Instruments, Raven Boys...
00:10:55
Speaker
trying to think of other things. I'm like really looking at my shelf right now. I Ember in the Ashes series. And then I was like consuming Shadow and Bone, that entire series, Cruel Prince series.
00:11:05
Speaker
Like I'm not joking when the selection series. And then I was like, Oh, what's a guitar, a court of thorns or thorns and roses. Done. See ya.
00:11:17
Speaker
But that's another part of our lore as a group is ACOTAR.

Influencing Each Other's Reads

00:11:22
Speaker
You know, because Carrie is the one who is like, you need to read it. And my stupid self, I'd seen it on BookTok, A Thousand Hour. I've seen it TikTok.
00:11:30
Speaker
I will say I saw it on TikTok, people talking about ACOTAR. And they would say... Yeah. yeah i legit thought they were talking about some sort of like television show or video game that i had never heard of i knew what a quat of thorns and roses was i knew that was a book But ACOTAR was like a video game or something. I don't know. who Whatever they're talking about, it's not for me. And I would just scroll on by.
00:11:54
Speaker
then one day you said, I need to read ACOTAR. And it like clicked in my head. And I was like, I'm an idiot. Yeah. And you know what's great? like At the time I was reading it, it was like you would go on Pinterest to go look up like your favorite like fan art and your favorite...
00:12:12
Speaker
like quotes and stuff. And I was on Pinterest being like, what is this? What is this? And it I was like wrapping up mortal instruments because mortal instruments, I mean, you're going to be reading that for eternity because there's just so many spinoffs and things. And I was like finally wrapping it up.
00:12:25
Speaker
was like, I need another like world to consume me. I'm like going to freak out. And I was like looking up different things on Pinterest and I was seeing people would take pictures of, they wouldn't like to put a quote out. They take pictures of the page.
00:12:41
Speaker
and put it on Pinterest. And I would be like, oh, this is interesting. Like, who's Reese? And like all this stuff. And then I'm like starting this series And I'm like, oh my God. And then i'm like telling everyone. And then whenever we all were reading, we started reading like our unhin unhinged romance books.
00:13:04
Speaker
And we were starting like Viciously Yours, The Wolf King. And i was like, i'm hello, I'm going to need y'all to read this series because it's going to change your life. And it's going what is it, like 20 books?
00:13:17
Speaker
Well, then, well and I didn't know that when you told me we had to do it either. Yeah. So you're all like, you need to read ACOTAR. And I was like, fine. You know, I meant to read it. My sister's read it. I'll read it. And then I read it. And then we bullied Lindsay into reading it. And now we're all hooked. Yeah.
00:13:32
Speaker
And now we're reading Crescent. Right. And now we've we've read all of it. And we're reading the third Crescent City book together. Like,

Book Club Dynamics

00:13:40
Speaker
yeah. like I love sharing this stuff with you guys.
00:13:43
Speaker
It's so much fun. I love it. I can't imagine not having this, even if we weren't podcasting, like this group we have is just fun. Yeah, we where it is fun.
00:13:56
Speaker
And like sharing all of our, i just love the fact that we share our genres with each other. Yes. And we try our different genres with each other. Like Lindsay trying like horror or trying your horror recommendations or, know, trying thriller mysteries and Crystal like opening my mind to like sci-fi and stuff that I never thought I'd be reading. And then me bringing like romance to the table.
00:14:23
Speaker
i think that's what makes this podcast great. so fun interesting. And this is like a book club podcast, you know, and also like for our movies and shows too, like this is like, we're experiencing this all for the first time together. Sometimes because, you know, sometimes these are rewatches or rereads for some of us, not all the time, but because we do like to try to pick titles where it's like, this is like our book club and we're going to all try to read this for the first time together, watch it for the first time. And it's about sharing our love.
00:14:55
Speaker
Of these things.

Disney's Influence on Genre Preferences

00:14:56
Speaker
Yeah. Like, legit, you guys drug me through an entire month of scary stuff. And we're gonna do it again. yeah i'm not mad about it Like, I was mad at the time.
00:15:09
Speaker
But looking back, I've learned a little. I've grown. I've expanded my horizons. You know, i I wouldn't have done that without you guys. You know that's...
00:15:21
Speaker
It's really, and I definitely wouldn't have read some of these unhinged romance books that Carrie keeps throwing at us. But I'm so glad I have. Because let me tell you, that's fun. They're fun. They're such a good time. It's so much fun.
00:15:35
Speaker
Me watching you read the most unhinged things. I signed up for my first ARC copy this week. So, like, I wouldn't have even known that was a thing if it wasn't for Carrie. Because i'm I'm a reader, but I'm not a reader like some of these people out there on social media that read ARC.
00:15:54
Speaker
100 plus books a year like I'm I was always safely in the 10 to 15 books a year range like there might have been a few years where things were like crazy with life that I might have hit like five or six but for the most part 10 books a year was a solid but like now I've learned so much about the book world it's because of you guys you know and it's awesome And I also think that being like a romance girly that I am, i think that honestly started like that lore. That's all the way back in like Disney times, probably. i think for all of us, really, let's be honest. Yeah.
00:16:40
Speaker
Let's be honest. Yeah. All of us. It started with the Disney romance movies. Yeah. Way back when. Like, the characters we were shipping and we didn't even know it.
00:16:51
Speaker
For real. And the, the like, drama. yeah. like Belle's straight up Stockholm Syndrome. Yeah. You know, we got- Those are, like, the types of things that wouldn't really, like, now as an adult, you're like, no.
00:17:06
Speaker
You know, Beast with the toucher and die. Like, oh. Oh. Yeah. And guess what? Guess what one of my favorite tropes is? but you know yeah <unk> Exactly. Exactly.
00:17:17
Speaker
Like Mulan is like one of my absolute favorite Disney movies. You love that strong female main character. That's like one of my favorite. And especially like Secret Identity is one of my absolute favorite tropes.
00:17:32
Speaker
Yep. Especially for a female main character. It's like to my core. That's like one of my favorite things. And like that, that same trope was like, let's get down to business. Like we're at a train and we got to, know, she's about to like show everyone up, all the men up that she's a boss bitch and she don't give a, you know, she don't care. She don't care. And she's about to like kick all your asses at this and be better than all of you.
00:18:00
Speaker
that's like, that is my trope. That's always been my trope. And and you know, that's where the lore started right there.
00:18:07
Speaker
It started with Mulan. You heard it here, folks. Yeah, it really does it did. did. That's exactly where it started. Like, I'm trying to think of, like, you know, my Disney characters.
00:18:20
Speaker
Well, I mean, and it goes back to like you said, with the the wild robot that we just finished recording, like... when you When you look back, like when you watch stuff as an adult or read books as an adult that you saw as a kid or that were meant for a child, you instantly see stuff that you would not have seen as a kid, that you didn't see as a kid.
00:18:46
Speaker
And, you know, like I look back on a lot of my Disney romance and I'm like, this is why I can't find a man, a good relationship because my expectations are unrealistic.
00:18:58
Speaker
Like, i'm I'm willing to admit that. And that was yeah set up. like You know what mean? Yeah. And you know what? It's something that's really interesting now, too, is like watching Disney movies now. And you like, you end up loving things like I love Frozen and I love Moana and you love it.
00:19:18
Speaker
be not because the character has this love interest. I love Frozen for the sisterly bond that's yeah there. I don't love it for whatever else is going on. I love it for the sister bond.
00:19:29
Speaker
I love Moana for the strong female character yeah the family aspects of it. like we don't We don't want the love interest when you're older anymore. No.
00:19:40
Speaker
no we will You might. you might i will i won't say it for everybody, ver but it is for me personally, it you see a different perspective. Exactly. And I think that's interesting. Lindsay, did you like Disney when you were younger?
00:19:53
Speaker
i did. I don't think it's Disney, though, but I actually think it's DreamWorks. El Dorado was my favorite. Yes. Yeah. That's a good one. yeah Both? Both. Yeah.
00:20:04
Speaker
It's the tag team, buddy, comedy. Yeah. that That was my favorite. I watched that one probably a thousand times. That makes sense in your lore. Right. And The Emperor's New Groove, which...
00:20:15
Speaker
I'm pretty sure it's Disney. But that's another one of those that like, instead of having that love interest thing, it was more of the buddy relationship. And, you know, I wish they had had more of those in the eighties when I was watching the Disney movies, because I feel like, you know, watching that like buddy friendship would have been more beneficial.
00:20:39
Speaker
And that's what I hope I've taught, like even like Lilo and Stitch and, know, You know, like so that that buddy friendship thing instead of the romance being the main plot of the story. Because honestly, even in the fairy the original fairy tales, the romance was never the main plot point.
00:20:56
Speaker
Yeah. You know what I mean? like And somehow Disney made that the main plot point. Maybe because they were trying to teach. Well, okay. Sorry. I'm going to get political and go all patriarchy. I'm like, no, back it up. play
00:21:11
Speaker
Yeah. i I mean, Lindsay, don't you like, you like Anastasia, right? Oh, love Anastasia. And you know what? And you love enemies to lovers. I do love enemies to lovers. That's where it started. That's where it started. That is such a good one. I love that one.
00:21:28
Speaker
I adore that one. Yeah, I i mean, i would have to say like Disney and like, and I was also like really into like Disney Channel, like as I got older, Disney Channel movies, you know, the shows, things like that.
00:21:43
Speaker
That's where like a lot of that came in. And then, you know, and then I got to... I just realized where mine started. Where? Sleeping Beauty, Faded Mates.
00:21:57
Speaker
I mean, it's not technically Faded Mates because like... They were betrothed when they were babies. But, like, that's Fated Mates. As close as you're going to get in Disney. That's true. And I love me some Fated Mates.
00:22:08
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. Dang. Dang. Disney started it all. before They forced us into these tropes for life. Sorry, I didn't mean to interrupt you. i just had one of those ADHD moments. it's true. it's true It's true.
00:22:23
Speaker
They make us like fall in love with these tropes for the rest

Exploring Literary Tropes

00:22:27
Speaker
of our lives. And then all of a sudden I'm reading enemies to lovers for eternity. like really want to know, people that really love friends to lovers, like that's their trope.
00:22:39
Speaker
Where did that lore start? Where did that come from? Because I feel like enemies to lovers is pushed on me everywhere. really want to know. I'm to say, like, where did friends, like, I guess Little Mermaid, maybe?
00:22:54
Speaker
Maybe? no Because they're like opposites. Yeah. Yeah, I really, i really want to know that because it's like, I never liked friends to lovers because I feel like, I mean, we're back to the trope talk again, but I feel like that there's never enough tension for me.
00:23:18
Speaker
And I need, like, conflict for me. But, you know what else? You know what other thing I know has affected my life? You know what? what Tarzan.
00:23:31
Speaker
Oh. And I'll tell you why. Because it's like, I love a trope where it's like, the trope where like, you have a character teaching the other character. knew you were going to say the teaching trope.
00:23:50
Speaker
if you are you're teaching you're teaching another character also like where the one character is like super strong but also has like an innocence to them yeah you know but they're very tough and strong still does that make sense yep i love a damsel in distress but i hate a damsel in distress but that's that's every disney movie yeah well until recently yeah Going back to El Dorado.
00:24:21
Speaker
Grump and sunshine. Grump and sunshine. yeah oh my gosh, that's where it started. Wow. Carrie's opening my eyes. cat The cat agrees.
00:24:32
Speaker
Little agrees.
00:24:35
Speaker
All right. Well, I think that's a wrap.
