Reflections on Superman and Streaming Woes

00:01:26
Speaker
Hey, what's going on? Not much, man. are you doing? good. Doing good. good We are out of the year of Superman, thank God. Light week.
00:01:37
Speaker
A few things to talk about, though, i want to get into. First off, I completely forgot to watch Dexter S. Rex last week. Yes, yes. But we'll talk about it. Yes, will. can't watch this week's episode.
00:01:49
Speaker
Yes, i got i got some issues. um Okay. Very, very big issue with Paramount+, not Dexter. This episode was fucking incredible. So it goes live...
00:02:01
Speaker
at 12.01 Eastern Standard Time. Yes. But the issue with that is the Paramount Plus app is, um, trash. So, instead of having the episode there to go to, you have to start last week's episode, skip to the credits, and wait for the play next until 3.01 the morning.
00:02:24
Speaker
and That was really fucking annoying because I was like, I stay up for this and it's like the last thing I do before I go to bed is watch Dexter Resurrection. And i was fishing up a watch of Superman and then I was like trying to find a Resurrection for like 20 minutes. And then I'm like, well, I'm just going to try to go into last week's episode and see what happens. And that

Dexter Resurrection: Episode Insights

00:02:45
Speaker
actually worked. I was very, um,
00:02:47
Speaker
Yeah. but that actually worked so this week of dexter was really really fucking good and remember the trailer where they invite all serial killers now on The way that transpires is completely different than the trailer portrays it.
00:03:08
Speaker
So we'll talk about it next week, but text me after you watch it. I assume you'll watch it today. Yeah, will. I'll watch it tonight, yeah. It's good. um But yeah, text me and we'll talk about it. um Yeah, very good episode. Each episode seems to be getting better and better.
00:03:23
Speaker
so I did want to talk about this first thing before that, ah kind of off topic. Can you check your microphone and see if you're inputting to um the microphone or your computer? It sounds like you're going it through the computer.
00:03:36
Speaker
um The other thing I want to talk about is Desmond Harrington, who plays Quinn, posted this on Instagram last week. A behind-the-scenes picture supposedly of something that he filmed for Dexter Resurrection, completely um confirming that he's on the show. I'm going to...
00:03:53
Speaker
Uh, yeah, now I don't see you, though. um okay ah used gar Your sound's better, for sure. um Interesting. That turned off my camera, apparently. ah But in the post, he says, my boss said this is all I can share at this at this time.
00:04:09
Speaker
And it looks like a fuzzy picture of him standing over somebody dead on the sidewalk in and the Quinn pose from back in the day. um But yeah, thanking the people who made the show. So I guess confirmed he's going to be there.
00:04:25
Speaker
Um, yeah, I don't think there's anything I can do on my end as far as your camera. I don't know. Uh. Let
00:04:37
Speaker
me shut you down. Hold on. Nope, I got you. There you are. There you are. For some reason I switched my audio and switched my video input to my phone. Oh, okay.
00:04:49
Speaker
So, okay. So think we're back. We're back. All right. We're cooking with grease. and But yeah, and there's going to be a fun little surprise in this episode of Dexter for you. A question that we were both wondering for a very long time is answered for us both in this episode.
00:05:04
Speaker
Okay. So yeah, I'll leave it at that. Cool. Yeah. We'll talk about next week.

Squid Game and Cultural Challenges

00:05:10
Speaker
um Squid Game. I don't know how far along you are. Have you watched up to season two? Have you watched any of the Squid Game series?
00:05:21
Speaker
I've only seen the first season. I started the second season and I lost interest real quick and stopped watching. Very easy. Very easy to lose interest in this show because it is foreign language and you have to either you either watch with subtitles or you have to do the dub over, which is I do because it's easier to watch for me with dub over.
00:05:38
Speaker
um lot of people don't like that though how it doesn't sync up with the lips, it doesn't matter to me. But I did watch season three. the The finale, the final season of this is going on Netflix. Kind of.
00:05:50
Speaker
And it does set up a of sequel series, which we already knew was going to happen in America. Who was producing that? was big-name director. Isn't it Fisher?
00:06:01
Speaker
Fincher? Yeah, it's Fincher. Yep, that's who it is. And he brought in a big name to take over the mantle of the American Squid Game or the English Squid Game by the looks of it. He brought in Cade Blanchett.
00:06:14
Speaker
um And she shows up in the very end of the episode. um Spoiler alert, the main guy dies. And the the guy who runs everything lives And he's driving through the streets of, believe, San Francisco.
00:06:29
Speaker
And he's watching one of those games happen through the window of his limousine. And she's on the ground playing this game. And it kind of shows that she's the one that's going to be part of this um next series of Squid Game where it's going to be set.
00:06:45
Speaker
But yeah, David Fincher was the one that's with it with us who it is. so um Overall, good season. i know I think a lot of people are going to problem with the ending because... They all like that guy who played, uh, hello puppies.
00:06:58
Speaker
Um, they all like that guy who played, um, in Andor. i can't remember his name in Andor. Or not Andor. Um, uh, fuck. What was that Star Wars show that he was in? Oh, uh, Acolyte?
00:07:12
Speaker
Acolyte, yeah. Everybody liked him in Acolyte. Um, kind of had a weak ending to his character, a lot of people could say, but. um Overall, I liked it. was a good ending to an entire series.
00:07:24
Speaker
yeah It was only six episodes. The last two episode episodes last two seasons were pretty short. so you want to get If you want to get through them, they're they're easy to get through. but um yeah All over, and we'll see a continuation of this sometime on Netflix, I'm guessing, with an American or English version. so um Up next, Live Aid.

Documentaries: Live Aid and Jaws

00:07:44
Speaker
I'll probably talk about it again during the finale in four weeks, three weeks, whatever,
00:07:51
Speaker
on cnn i did get in on itunes i have a feeling it's goingnna be on hbo max eventually but um it's called live aid when rock and roll took over the world or took on the world um and there's four episodes the first one aired this sunday i just wanted to talk about it briefly and i'll probably talk about it again during the finale in four weeks three weeks whatever but um it talkeds this This first episode is pretty good. talked about the lead-up to building up Live Aid, um the Band-Aid song, Do You Know It's Christmas, talking about that behind the scenes and making that, um and all about famine in Africa, and that's where it all all the proceeds to this went to that, um and it led to We Are The World, which is more of a pop song.
00:08:35
Speaker
the pop song part of it where all the huge celebrities came on, made this big song for it. um And then it leads up to what episode two is going to be as a global, quote unquote, quote global jukebox, um creating the whole Live Aid concert, which a lot of people know that concert because of the Queen performance it just at the end of Bohemian Rhapsody. it was It was pretty much done um picture for picture of what that was on on it on that day.
00:09:01
Speaker
um But I had interviews with Bob Geldof, who was a pop star in the 70s, I had interviews with Sting, Phil Collins, Bonham. um Later on in the series, they bring in George W. Bush and Tony Blair, the the Prime Minister of Britain at the time, um to do. They're also going to talk about Live 8.
00:09:19
Speaker
which happened in 2005 when they came back and did another famine thing. A big, huge concert from Running for Famine. so um It's good, though. It's on CNN. I did get it on iTunes.
00:09:32
Speaker
um I've been wanting to watch this documentary for a while. um so There'll be episode every week. by Like I said, I think I'll talk about it when the finale airs rather than talk about it every week. um But it is good. If you have never seen the Live Aid performance,
00:09:46
Speaker
um All 10 hours are on their YouTube page right now. And there are some really cool 80s bands on there, including the Queen performance. The Queen performance is on there. um And another ah some other bands. and I know Phil Collins is on there.
00:10:00
Speaker
I'm not sure. I think the Led Zeppelin... Led Zeppelin did reunite on that concert. But they thought that their performance was so bad, you can't usually find that performance through anything official because they took it off of all the DVDs and all the streaming.
00:10:14
Speaker
um But you can find that performance on YouTube if you want to look for it separately. I've seen it before, but... um Another great documentary came out this week, um leading up to the 50th anniversary of Jaws.
00:10:27
Speaker
It's called Jaws at 50, the definitive inside story, done with all the creators of the movie, including Steven Spielberg sitting down, pretty much being the main guy they're talking to.
00:10:38
Speaker
um this is a This is a National Geographic slash Disney Plus Hulu exclusive. It's on there if you want to watch it. um All about the making of Jaws and how how it came from a book.
00:10:51
Speaker
to a movie, to a global phenomenon, and how easy this movie could have been filmed in York, Maine, if they just went to the coast for about two hours. yeah when they were When they were looking for a coastal town to be Amity, um theyve they figured out martha's vint yeah Martha's Vineyard was a good place to do it, but they were casting other places around. I'm wondering if they made it up to Maine.
00:11:15
Speaker
um Because they were doing the whole entire eastern seaboard at the time looking for a perfect place to depict Amity. They talked about it in the documentary. and watching I did go back and I watched the actual Jaws. so I know you watched it a couple weeks ago. I did want to talk about it briefly. Because watching that movie, it makes you realize that our hometown...
00:11:40
Speaker
It is Amity. It is Amity to a T. We live in a coastal town that gets very busy in the summer. It's a tourist trap. um And if we had to close down all of the beaches because of a shark attack, that would destroy the i economy in York where we grew up. but But yeah, great movie.
00:11:58
Speaker
Great documentary. We both suggest that. It's on Hulu, Disney+, plus making of Jaws. Like I said, all the creators and a bunch of directors come on there. um and of course I know Robert Shaw and Roy Schneider have long passed, but um they do have some archive footage of their of interviews in the past talking about the movie.
00:12:19
Speaker
was I did not know that Robert Shaw, he's such a great actor, he's British. had no idea until this. um Yeah, he was in Man with the Golden Gun, I want to say. He was in one of the Bond movies.
00:12:30
Speaker
Okay, yeah, I wasn't sure, but yeah. Great movies. Not so great, but it was an okay action movie. um Heads of State on Amazon. i don't know if you had a chance to catch this or not.
00:12:41
Speaker
Nah. It was okay. I mean, got John Cena. Being very John Cena-like in this movie, which is kind of like a warning to John Cena. It's like, be very, very careful.
00:12:54
Speaker
um You know who else fell in this category? it was The Rock, 10 years ago. Where you're getting a movie, you know it's The Rock. This movie, you know it's John Cena. Well, um ten years ago, up until Black Adam, until they decided to work with real directors. Right, yes, yes. um But yeah, Idris Elba, John Cena, Priyanka Chopra, Jonas, all star in this movie.
00:13:19
Speaker
ah Some other familiar guys you'll see, Melted from office Office Spaces in this too. There's some other familiar faces you've you've seen before, but... um Yeah, it was it was an okay movie. It's on Amazon Prime for free if you have Prime.
00:13:30
Speaker
It just came out on on July 4th week. so

James Gunn's Influence on DC

00:13:34
Speaker
um It's on there if you want to watch it for free. um And I thought, wow, John Cena and Idris Elba, they had a lot of great chemistry in this movie. they should I wonder if they've acted... I have completely forgot...
00:13:45
Speaker
That they were both in Suicide Squad together. Yep. I wanted to talk about Suicide side Squad quickly, briefly, because we are leading up. We're going to take a couple weeks off in between, but we are leading up to Peacemaker.
00:13:58
Speaker
um That is the next big DC show that we have, and we are only a few weeks away now. um I think about a month away right now is when we have Peacemaker. And we love season one so much. We love this new universe that James Gunn has built.
00:14:12
Speaker
um So when Peacemaker 2 comes out, we're going to be very, very excited for it. So wanted to get further into that. And this is when James Gunn got hired by DC to do this movie, a semi-sequel, but not a sequel to the original Suicide Squad. He said it's not in the same, it's in the same universe, but it's not. He's always said that way before the DC universe started. It was back when it was in the DCEU. He's always said that.
00:14:36
Speaker
But it was kind of a paying homage to that. That's why he brought in Harley Quinn and And Joel Killerman to play Rick Flagg Jr. um But it's definitely a whole other different take on what the original Suicide Squad was. I love that movie. yeah I love the first one.
00:14:53
Speaker
um But he did take this and kind of gave it his own twist. It's very much a James Gunn movie. His humor. His look. His soundtrack, and down right down to it, to a T. And John Cena, think this is probably the role that defined what he was going to be later on as far as an actor.
00:15:11
Speaker
um His humor, the way he yeah he acts, especially when he's acting against Idris Elba in this movie. um the whole i The first time they're interacting with each other on the island, talking about the island of dicks. on It's hilarious.
00:15:25
Speaker
Great movie. Big, huge starfish villain at the end. Yep.
00:15:36
Speaker
kind of fitting that james gun's running everything after he kind of changed everything with yeah movie so if you like if you like james gun if you like guardians of the galaxy chances are you're gonna like this too Yeah, when this came out is when the rumors of him taking over DC started to pop up.
00:15:54
Speaker
Yeah, then later we......which would be a few years before he actually did. Later we found out that he was actually asked before this if he wanted to help Superman at that time. um And he did not want to because Superman is such a huge, huge character and he was kind of hesitant to touch it until he got hired to take be the head of the whole company. I mean, even in the movie we watched last week, um you could tell that Superman was the hardest part for him to write, where everyone else just seemed naturally like James Gunn characters, especially like Guy Gardner and Mr. Terrific.
00:16:22
Speaker
And that Superman in that movie was actually the more difficult person for him most difficult character for him to write. Yep. Yep, but great movie. this is This is on HBO Max still to this day. debuted on HBO Max. Still on there to this day, if you want to watch it.
00:16:38
Speaker
But this week, we also have an important... we have an important We have an important movie next week. But we have a movie that we have to get through, unfortunately,

Fantastic Four Film Critique

00:16:51
Speaker
until we get there. Because it's the last movie of the Fantastic Four that we haven't touched yet.
00:16:57
Speaker
Fantastic Four, Fast, Fan, Four Stick, whatever you want to call it, came out exactly ten years ago. Great casting. Great casting. Because you're talking about two two huge names at now ah Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan coming in to play Johnny Storm, which is a choice, but two big, huge names now, especially a couple years after this, Michael B. Jordan took off like a rocket.
00:17:23
Speaker
yeah What's the guy's name who plays Ben Grimm? He's very, very good. i can't I can't remember. He's awesome, yeah. He's awesome, I can't remember his name. but There was a lot of problems in this movie. i've watched it I watched it one time before. it was a few years ago. I decided just to rip the Band-Aid off and watch it. and i was like, what the fuck did they do to these characters?
00:17:43
Speaker
um And watching it this time, I kind of have an idea of what they did. They rushed it. um And they were making this movie to fit into the whole Marvel... um Days of Puce, your past universe, they were trying to go into the X-Men universe at the time.
00:17:57
Speaker
ah just And they just mishandled these characters from the get-go. um Chet Hanks, and I wanted to mention that, played Ben Grimm's older brother.
00:18:09
Speaker
um Very quick cameo in the beginning of the movie. Sue and Johnny's father in this movie, their name is Franklin. Which is a name in the comics, but it's the name of their child. I'm not sure if it's just named after their father or not, but I did want to mention that. But after they get their powers, which they get it kind of the same way, they go into another dimension, get their powers.
00:18:31
Speaker
Um... It's about one hour into the movie. There's a pivotal point and that just everything changes. It's one hour into the movie. There's about 40 minutes left of the movie. And they get mil militarized, which is very different for the Fantastic Four because they are on their own, which they kind of do at the end of the movie, but they never work for the government. They're kind of on their own.
00:18:54
Speaker
um And it's like, why are you working for the government? And especially like Ben Grimm, he's like the weapon that they send over to do all the damage in wars. It's like, what? That doesn't seem like comic accurate for the character at all.
00:19:05
Speaker
um
00:19:08
Speaker
Dexter Morgan's upstate New York girlfriend, I crush you i forgot to put this in the knife forgot i put this in the notes. She was in the little quick cameo in there, too. She worked at the Baxter Foundation. But the biggest mess of this movie was Doctor Doom.
00:19:20
Speaker
And what they did to the character overall made him a weak, like, mousy character who had no... I mean, they haven't really nailed him yet with anything in in Marvel or any movie.
00:19:32
Speaker
um But, yeah, this this is the biggest mess of them all. Overall, didn't even touch the heart of the characters. um Distancing from the source material is always a major issue with anything like this, and it will always be a major point of contention for fans of anything of this shit, especially DC, Marvel, anything of meaningful IP.
00:19:53
Speaker
um But yeah, it's a horrible movie. um Rightfully so, Starts off strong. I enjoyed the beginning. Yeah. After the failures that happened with this and the X-Men movies, there's no wonder that Fox sold to Disney because it was just horrible.
00:20:10
Speaker
um And this is probably one of this and X-Men were their big money makers. And if they can't do anything with those, then they had no choice to sell and went to Disney. we're going to see the continuation of this next week when we talk about Fantastic Four First Steps, which I'm very excited for.
00:20:26
Speaker
Not as much excitement as I had going into Superman, but... Nah. Excitement... The trailers still weren't doing anything for me, but I love Fantastic Four, so... It's funny that that you say that because the trailers weren't doing anything for me, but they were also giving away too much.
00:20:42
Speaker
I didn't want to see any Galactus at I stopped watching them. Yes. I mean, I watched the first two, and i've avoid I've been able to avoid them ever since. With Superman, I wanted to see everything I could beforehand, but with this, I was just like, I'm just going to let the movie play out and see what happens.
00:20:57
Speaker
Yeah, they they started showing Galactus up to, like, the face up. ah They won't show this part, but they saw the shoulders, the back, they showed everything up but that. um But I wish they didn't show anything, just the feet or just something that would have been great, and that would have great ending, just jumping in. and i always We always both say that, like, why why do too much for your for your trailers? I've never weighed the whole movie, but...
00:21:19
Speaker
um So yeah we'll talk about that next week. We're both going to try to get to that. I think I'm going to next week and see that in Superman a again. So we'll revisit Superman a little bit too. But with that being said, let's get into the news.
00:21:39
Speaker
And it's not a news, not going to have trail around it.
00:21:43
Speaker
I got a few cool trailers that came out this week. First off, let's talk about Stands. A movie starring Eminem, a documentary coming out in theaters on August 7th, limited time.
00:21:55
Speaker
Probably going to be streaming a month or so after that. Exclusively in AMC theaters. So none of those around here for us. But a whole new soundtrack is coming out too, I believe on August 7th.
00:22:06
Speaker
um With some unreleased Eminem songs and stuff. It's all about pretty much the fandom around Eminem. Talking to fans. Talking to him about this whole thing of people talking to him off the street. Thinking, hey, cool, you're you're a cool dude. You're my best friend. Because they just listen to his music and think they're related to him in some way.
00:22:26
Speaker
In the documentary, he looks pissed. It's Eminem, but he looks pissed like talking about how fans are interacting with him. so Interesting to see how this turns out. I do love documentaries. I like Eminem. I'm interested in this for sure.
00:22:42
Speaker
um Another trailer, the final season of Stranger Things. um Stranger Things 5. We've got the brand new trailer for that. ah The one that came out a few months ago was better.
00:22:55
Speaker
This is a full trailer. i've got a brand new poster. It looked pretty cool. Back now looking on looking on the the kids who all are in their 20s now. But um yeah, this comes out and on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's.
00:23:07
Speaker
ah New Year's is this is the series ah series finale. But yeah, first half comes out on Thanksgiving, so i can't wait for that. um Another trailer, this one looked really good. in this Everything I see about this movie and the news the new song done by Nine Inch Nails sounded amazing over the soundtrack.
00:23:23
Speaker
But Tron Aries looks fantastic. I mentioned when we saw one movie a couple couple weeks ago. I don't think, it wasn't it wasn't Superman, it was the one we saw before that. The trailer for Tron Aries and the big screen looked amazing in the RPX. I'm sure on IMAX it'll look great too because filmed for IMAX. It comes out October 10th, the trailer looks awesome.
00:23:44
Speaker
um It's where all the Tron people come into the real world. And we found out that Jared Leto is playing kind of an AI created in Tron world that's being militarized by the American government to police the real world or something like that. looks really cool.
00:24:01
Speaker
um The visuals look cool. we saw We saw Jeff Bridges come back in a quick cameo in the trailer too. And I haven't even seen the second Tron. I've seen the first one bunch of times, but I'm interested interested to see the second one. We'll get into that leading up to this movie in October.
00:24:15
Speaker
But the trailer that we both want to talk about, the trailer we've been looking forward to for a while... It's Uncaged Fury starring Johnny Cage. A faux trailer came out earlier in the week because we know that Mortal Kombat is coming out.
00:24:29
Speaker
So New Line released this awesome in-universe trailer for Johnny Cage starring um car ah urban not Carl Urban. is he carl a carl Yeah, Carl Urban.
00:24:41
Speaker
And it's it's it's Johnny Cage in an action movie from what we think would be the 90s and 80s. It looks awesome ah in that style. You can tell the choreographed fighting in this. is It's everything. Everything you would hope Johnny Cage would be.
00:24:54
Speaker
This all led up to, i believe was yesterday, where the actual trailer came out for Mortal Kombat 2. Which looked incredible. Yep.

Mortal Kombat 2 and Supergirl Teasers

00:25:04
Speaker
We got some character posters there, of all the new characters.
00:25:07
Speaker
This will be the first post-work movie for us. It will be, yeah. um This is, the sequel came out, this original this original first one came out during the pandemic.
00:25:18
Speaker
This was also free on HBO Max at the time. I remember watching it twice that weekend. It came out because I was so impressed with the with the first one. So I really cannot wait for this. They're bringing in Shao Kahn. They're bringing in whole bunch of new new characters. Scorpion's coming back.
00:25:33
Speaker
I don't remember much about the first one. I gotta go back and watch that too Even though I saw it twice the weekend of. I didn't remember. I loved it though. I even bought it on iTunes. Yeah, I'm not sure if I bought it too. I might i think I may have too if it was on sale. I usually do, but...
00:25:48
Speaker
um yeah Great movie. you Cannot wait for the sequel. but um All leading up to... Let's get into the news. Superman did big numbers last week. Big, huge numbers. $121 million dollars the first weekend.
00:26:02
Speaker
um it's since almost up to two hundred million um I think $315 million worldwide. The international numbers aren't as big, but Superman is American character, pro-American up until the 90s, so it never was really big overseas. but um And enough to be the third largest debut after Minecraft and Lilo and Stitch this year.
00:26:25
Speaker
Speaking of overseas, you see the numbers for Fantastic Four pre-sales in China? No, I did not. They really did not fuck with comic books. steve I read $2,000 in pre-sales. $2,000 in pre-sales.
00:26:37
Speaker
I think they're kind of over the genre at this point in China. China also has a problem with the government, too. yeah They put a lot of restrictions on what people can watch and who can go and what what they can do. so um Overall, worldwide made $217 million. dollars Budget's $225 million, so they almost made all their money back, not including promotion and and marketing and everything. but um The global breakdown of the last week, or last weekend, um America made $122 million, UK made $9.9 million, so far and so forth. Going all the way to Japan, which you mentioned, $2.5 million. yeah Japan is not doing too well. China
00:27:20
Speaker
6.6, not doing too well, but, um, you we'll have to wait and see how Fantastic Four does, and how the second week of Superman does this week. Mm-hmm. Um, everybody's saying it's gonna be about 50%, which is pretty good for a movie on the second week, so...
00:27:34
Speaker
um It did meet beat Man of Steel to land the biggest opening weekend for a solo Superman movie ever. Not according to some people. um It's been while. David Zazoff, speaking of Warner Brothers, speaking of that whole mess, um did did put out a statement, I believe Monday morning.
00:27:51
Speaker
Saying, three years ago I hired James Gunn, Peter Stafford, to reimagine and unify in the creative direction of DC under one leadership team by breathing new life and excitement into one of the most iconic storytelling franchises in the world.
00:28:03
Speaker
James and Peter's commitment to honoring the legacy of DC Universe while forging something new and enthralling is inspired. I remember my first meeting with James three years ago. He spoke about growing up in Missouri and how characters of the DC Universe weren't just stories to him. They were like his family. His personal bond with these DC heroes... was powerful.
00:28:22
Speaker
and know that that I knew then that James was the right person to bring them to life. His love for DC World runs deep. And it shines in every frame of his work. And praising the movies and talking about DC Studios over the next year is going to introduce Supergirl and Clayface in a series of lanterns looking forward to DC Vision.
00:28:41
Speaker
It's clear, the momentum is real, and I couldn't be more excited for what's ahead. So Zazoff, Warner Brothers, all saying, praising Superman, praising the money that it's making and pretty much doing what they hoped it would do.
00:28:52
Speaker
is reinvigorating Warner Bros. and DC Studios, a brand new studio. so Very, very cool. I want to talk about a few things that we talked about last week, just break just briefly. um That mural.
00:29:04
Speaker
We got a little bit of a breakdown of the mural. This was in the Justice Gang, Justice League, the leaguer the Hall Justice. um there's some There's some more pictures of it with ah pictures pointed out. Dr. Fate, Vibe, Atomic Night, Wildcat, which I mentioned last week, and Jay Garrick Flash, you can see right there.
00:29:22
Speaker
HD versions of this will be released, James Gunn said. I'm interested to see what this full mural looks like. talking on Instagram or Twitter...
00:29:35
Speaker
no they actually have a mural there and they just took that mural and added their own dc look to it um which is kind of cool but um talking on instagram or twitter instagram hello puppy Talking on Instagram or Twitter, James Gunn, when asked, when does Superman 2 come out, um James Gunn said, define Superman 2, quote unquote. i Kind of teasing that it's not we're not going to get a traditional sequel to this movie. We're not going to get a traditional Superman sequel.
00:30:08
Speaker
talking about DCU's big saying gets teased pretty big, pretty highly in Peacemaker Season 2, quoting... um still not really sure where he's gonna be coming back but we know he's coming back sooner rather than later um also talking about dc's big bdc's big event saying it's get teased pretty big pretty highly in peacemaker season two quoting um And it's not what anyone thinks. It's not what anyone would guess.
00:30:32
Speaker
But I think that if people watch the next season of Peacemaker, they'll see a lot of these things are where a lot of these things are going and have a little bit more of a sense of maybe what can happen. What do you think he's talking about? I was thinking kind of a crisis on infinite earth or some sort of a crossover with reversal.
00:30:49
Speaker
Yeah, I don't know. We'll have to see in Peacemaker when that comes out. Yeah. um The thing that this movie did do, um dog adoption went up 500%, which happens for a lot of reasons. It happens during Easter time. Unfortunately, people return bunnies after they get them for Easter.
00:31:09
Speaker
um But this movie did a lot for dog dog dog adoption, too. i just hope I hope people keep their dogs and are... responsible enough to not just get dogs because crypto is awesome. A lot of people aren't, that's unfortunate. But um yeah, ah adoption, adoption, searching for adoptions, they've gone up 500, 400 percent in just the last week alone, just because everyone loves crypto and him being adopted dog. The whole story between him and Uso, who was James Gunn's, how he created crypto in the first place. But Supergirl.
00:31:41
Speaker
Big news this week as Supergirl debuted. um We got a brand new behind the scenes picture of of Kara, Millie Alcock, who looked amazing and the movie sounds amazing. But James Gunn on Monday released the teaser poster for next year's Supergirl.
00:31:59
Speaker
um With the tagline, look out, written in spray paint over the up from the Superman Great cross promotion for Superman and Supergirl. Um, especially the same look that she had going into so at the end of Superman, um, the trench coat drinking some sort of a slush or something or drink or or whatever she's drinking.
00:32:20
Speaker
Um, I cannot wait for this movie. I know a lot of people are yeah we're excited. You're excited. The biggest thing, week out of Superman, the biggest thing that I'm looking forward to is just seeing this universe explode. I just want to see more of it. and that'll be that'll be a big intergalactic part of it. It'll be great to see.
00:32:38
Speaker
Lantern's going to be another part of it we're be very excited to see. And next up is Peacemaker. I'm very excited for that. so um The rest of the box office for last week, Jurassic World Rebirth still did big numbers. $40 million for number two.
00:32:54
Speaker
um F1 did another $13 million for number three. Lilo and Stitch this week crossed $1 billion dollars in the global box office. ah First Hollywood title of this year to make that milestone.
00:33:07
Speaker
um So yeah, big huge numbers for the box office last week. And I think Superman is... This week, I think, is leading up to the weekend. It was ah estimated to be about $50 million to $60 million again for the second weekend. So we'll have to wait and see. but um I plan on seeing it. I believe I'm going to go see it before I see Fantastic Four.
00:33:27
Speaker
um I want to see the three d version before it leaves theaters. so Of Superman? Yeah, of Superman. The 3D version was it was a lot of fun, especially the T-Sphere scene.
00:33:37
Speaker
yeah Really enjoyable. um Yeah, it was cool to see in 3D. I'm glad I saw it. yeah um definitely either If I don't see it 3D, I'm definitely going to be seeing the... Yeah, I want to see it one more time in Theorist 2. I'm going be seeing it again. I'm going to see it before I see Fantastic Four last week. I've already decided that.
00:33:53
Speaker
um Emmy nominations came out. Leading the Emmy nominations... um We got Severance and The Penguin. so Severance had 27 Emmy nominations and The Penguin had 24.
00:34:05
Speaker
um White Lotus, Last of Us, Andor all leading up the the next. The studio had 23. So yeah, The Bear had 13.
00:34:17
Speaker
Andor had 14. Outstanding drama series. Andor, The Diplomat, The Last of Us, Paradise, The Pit, Severance, Slow Horses, White Lotus. I've seen three, four of those.
00:34:30
Speaker
um Out of all of those, I think, Probably Severance is my favorite. Last of Us, Andor, and Paradise in that order. The other four I haven't seen. Although I do want to see White Lotus. I hear it's great.
00:34:43
Speaker
um Outstanding lead actress in a drama series. Kathy Bates. ah Britt Lohr from sir sir ah Severance. Keri Russell. Bella Ramsey from The Last of Us. And Sharon Horgan. I don't know who that is.
00:34:58
Speaker
um Outstanding lead actor, Adam Scott for Severance, Sterling K. Brown for Paradise, Pedro Pascal for The Last of Us. If they're talking about the second season, yeah, he probably should win that.
00:35:11
Speaker
Gary Oldman for Slow Horses. great Hurt is great in that. Noah Weil for The Pit here. That's a great ER-type show. It's on Netflix, I believe. um Outstanding Comedy Series. Abedal and Mertri.
00:35:25
Speaker
The Bear. I don't know why that's in comedy. ah Hacks. Nobody Wants This. Don't know what that is. Only Murders in the Building. Strinking nominated. The Studio and What We Do in the Shadows. Everybody loves the studio in Hollywood. It's kind of like a Hollywood darling. Yeah. I can see the studio and I can see Only Murders and Shrinky too. but you My three favorite from the... I love Shrinky.
00:35:47
Speaker
When's Shrinky come back? um They're filming currently so I don't know. Probably next year. yeah um Outstanding lead actress in a comedy, Jean Smart, Ewa Idirri from The Bear, Kristen Bell, Quinta Bronson, Usa Odumu from The Resident, which hear is good.
00:36:09
Speaker
Outstanding lead actor in a comedy, Jeremy Allen White for The Bear, Seth Rogen for The Studio, Martin Short for Only Murders, Jason Segel for Strinking, and Adam Brody for Nobody Wants This.
00:36:20
Speaker
um All great performances. I think out of all those, Jason Segel is probably my favorite. um And Harrison Ford, very first Emmy nomination ever for shrinking for a supporting actor. 24 nominations for The Penguin, like I mentioned.
00:36:35
Speaker
um Outstanding limited series, The Penguin. um Adolescent, Monsters, Lyle and Eric Menendez story, Black Mirror, which I hear is great. ah the Dying for sex, don't know what that is. Outstanding lead actress in a limited series.
00:36:49
Speaker
um Michelle Williams, Kristen Minali, who plays in The Penguin. I think she's amazing. I think i think she should win it. Definitely. Outstanding lead actor in the Anthology Limited Series.
00:37:01
Speaker
ah Colin Farrell, his portrayal of The Penguin. i don't know I'm not even going to name anybody else because if he doesn't win that, it's tragedy. Nominated for Bad Thoughts, Outstanding Performer Tom Segura. Great show on Netflix.
00:37:14
Speaker
um That's interesting that he was nominated for that. And nominated for their very first Emmys for acting in the studio, Ron Howard and Martin Scorsese.
00:37:27
Speaker
Very interesting. Also interesting Emmy fact, Doctor Who, in their 62-year history, had their very first Emmy nomination this week. for outstanding choreography for this kind of kind of a musical dance sequence that they had in this past season.
00:37:44
Speaker
Not sure if the series is coming back ever, but especially on Disney+, plus but yeah, they it was nominated for an Emmy for the very first time in 62 years. um The Superman movie, the documentary on Christopher Reeves, had four nominations, including Outstanding Director for a Documentary.
00:38:00
Speaker
So yeah, an Emmy has come out, I believe, in September, September 14th. Going to be on CBS Paramount+. plus And we'll probably talk about that when it comes out.
00:38:12
Speaker
I don't know about you and your thoughts on movie tickets coming out a year before the movie comes out. they sought out They sold out at that New York theater that's like the biggest one in the world. And people are selling them on eBay.
00:38:29
Speaker
for $200 over, right? Something like that. crazy something like that Crazy, crazy, crazy. But The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan's movie, which comes out exactly a year. Did sell out all their 70mm IMAX screens, most of them, throughout the country yesterday. The one one in New York, you mentioned, I think sold out within... think it's the Chinese Theater in New York? I think, yeah.
00:38:50
Speaker
They're selling them on eBay for like $200 a ticket. Crazy. Fucking crazy. But everybody wants to watch... I mean, Nolan's saying that this is the best way to watch the movie, so everybody's buying those tickets up like crazy, so...
00:39:02
Speaker
Um, yeah, there's none around here, so. Um, Aaron Taylor Johnson and Lily Rose Depper are reportedly going to star in Robert Eggers' werewolf movie. Um, we talked about that a couple weeks ago. Aaron Taylor Johnson is going playing the werewolf.
00:39:17
Speaker
Also kind of announced in the article signing on William Dafoe, so have to wait and see on that. I announced last night, um thirty almost 40 years, um The Late Show started with David Letterman, going to be ending with with Stephen Colbert.
00:39:38
Speaker
They're canceling the show. A lot of political stuff going on with this right now. CBS was just sued. um he talks He talks a lot about the Trump administration.
00:39:49
Speaker
There's a lot of rumors, was this all part of the deal? Yeah. of the I guess CBS paid Trump millions of dollars for something that they said during the president, the the election. I don't really understand it all. but Was this all part of it Because Stephen Colbert talks shit about Trump.
00:40:05
Speaker
It's a political move. what They're saying it's a financial move, but who knows. Out of all the clips you see on YouTube, you don't usually see clips of the Colbert late show. That is true.
00:40:18
Speaker
You see Fallon, you see Kimmel, but you don't really see any late show clips. He doesn't have a lot of bits like that. um not not a Letterman had bits, he doesn't really do that. He has interviews, he does he has his monologue, but Never took off virally as far as the other late night shows are concerned and he's concerned. but um So yeah. ah This twenty seventh season of South Park supposed to be premiering next week And there's something going on with Paramount and Skydance and this whole merger that's happening.
00:40:48
Speaker
And the creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, are linking up with lawyers for a whopping deal that's worth $3 billion if something's going to be happening ah to get to get to negotiate this deal that they have with South South Park. and The streaming rights and being on the air every year. And they also put out special movies for Paramount+.
00:41:09
Speaker
And I guess internationally, all of the seasons of South Park were taken off a Paramount+. plus So lot of people are pissed about that. There's no way to watch them. I don't know. I have no idea what the mess is. All I know is that the creators are pissed.
00:41:23
Speaker
um Ryan Johnson. Talking about the scrapped Star Wars trilogy for the first time in a while, um so it was very very much just a concept, an outline, never even had an outline or a treatment or anything.
00:41:37
Speaker
But from the way it sounds, it's just kind they just kind of gave up on it, which is not surprising. Right. It kind sounded like they'd be giving up a lot on a lot of things Star Wars, except for few projects here and there. And I don't think with how people feel about Episode VIII, he could probably make the greatest Star Wars movie ever, and Star Wars fans would.
00:41:52
Speaker
which is also another very toxic right yeah toxicify thing we're involved with. i don't think I think this is for the best. I think he's best doing his own ideas and not playing in the Star Wars sandbox, especially with how temperamental Star Wars fans are right now.
00:42:07
Speaker
Yeah. Ryan Gosling Will Ferrell are going to star in a new action comedy on Amazon called Tough Guys. um Yeah, it'll be interesting to see them working against each other.
00:42:19
Speaker
um Taika Waititi going to be doing the next Judge Dredd movie. I don't you ever saw Dredd. It came out. Yeah, knew it was fucking great. Carl Urban. Yeah, Carl Urban coming in as Judge Dredd. It fucking bombed. And this is one thing I've seen. A lot of people do not want Taika Waititi to do it.
00:42:36
Speaker
A lot of people have soured on him since Thor. um But I'm like, before Thor, he had pretty good track record. So yeah we'll see. The problem with Taika doing this type of stuff is he's admittedly not a comic book fan.
00:42:50
Speaker
Like, he literally said he took Thor Ragnarok just so he could put food on the table. um That's the issue I have with it. But we'll see. the i like him as a filmmaker. So we'll

Upcoming Adaptations: Captain Planet & Zelda

00:43:00
Speaker
see. Yeah, me too.
00:43:01
Speaker
um Captain Planet and the Planeteers. It was a cartoon growing up. I loved this cartoon growing Oh, I loved it too. That was our era. That was our Saturday morning era.
00:43:12
Speaker
Yep. But they are making a live action. Netflix and did sign on. They're doing a live action series based on this show um produced by Greg Berlanti. And Leonardo DiCaprio.
00:43:24
Speaker
yeah are you know Leonardo DiCaprio, huge on environmentalists environmental um issues, so and understandably why he'd be right in the middle of this. um But the Captain Planet look Does not work well on live action. I remember, who was it? um ah War Machine fucking Cheadle. Don Cheadle did a live action parody on Funny or Die years and years ago. Oh, yeah, yeah, yep. yeah was that was looked weird.
00:43:51
Speaker
But it's John Cheadle, so it was made to look weird, too. And it was a parody, so. It was a parody, yeah. um Assassin's Creed, speaking Netflix, also being a live-action series.
00:44:02
Speaker
um Movie did not do well. I love the game. now i' to I think this is the way to go with this. it terms With this IP, this is probably the way to go. Yeah, I think so, too. there' there's a lot There's a lot there. There's a lot of time travel history stuff.
00:44:15
Speaker
You can't fit in as much exposition needed to so it makes sense for somebody that's never seen it in an hour and a half long movie. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Last of Us Season 3 definitely planned for 2027, so two years from now.
00:44:27
Speaker
And they're not sure whether it's going to be two seasons. or one more long season um that has not been decided yet. um I have a feeling if they're going to start off with Abby's story, it'll probably be two more seasons.
00:44:40
Speaker
Probably. i yeah I kind of hope it's like one long season just split into two parts, maybe a spring and a fall release or something like that. That'd be interesting. That'd be cool. Do like maybe me eight episodes. Yeah, they don't typically do that. you Do like eight episodes. You can do Abby's story in those eight episodes, then finish it up with the last eight episodes.
00:44:56
Speaker
they wanted to say If they wanted to save money on production, just film it back-to-back. I mean, everybody that's already there, you could just film it back-to-back. But yeah, we'll have to wait see on that. um It's going to be a huge loss not having Pedro there. but um Got the very first picture of the new kid playing Harry Potter.
00:45:12
Speaker
I don't even know if I have his name on here or not, but I don't. but ah That's a new kid. Started production this week for the new Harry Potter. um We also got Nick Frost playing Hagrid, which looks incredible. Just like Robbie Coltrane.
00:45:27
Speaker
yeah and They got some new kids playing um playing i think Neville Longbottom and Ollivander. I've seen that guy on the bottom right somewhere. He's playing Ollivander. ah yeah Interesting to see how the series... I'm very excited for it, but interesting to see.
00:45:43
Speaker
Speaking of casting, Legend of Zelda was cast this week. Two unknowns. Benjamin Evan Innsworth and Bo Braglison playing Zelda. but Benjamin playing Link.
00:45:56
Speaker
um Going the younger route. Very young. Looks like teenage route. um Yeah. the Filming soon. um i can't remember the guy who's directing it. can't remember his name. It's the Planet of the Apes dude, right? Yeah, Planet of the Apes. I can't remember his name either, but yeah, that guy. Yep.
00:46:15
Speaker
So yeah, very excited for that. We'll keep an eye on that. talk about that when more news comes out of it. But we got some swag to talk about. Swag! Stuff we all get.
00:46:26
Speaker
Come on, son. You know that's right. Got new popcorn bucket for the Naked Gun, which is getting rave reviews. um The Beaver Bucket. Hey, nice beaver. um Looks awesome.
00:46:38
Speaker
i think that's a Regal exclusive. um Got a McFarlane figure. Those looks really, really cool. We're to be having a lot more reveals next week during Comic-Con. We'll talk about other stuff.
00:46:52
Speaker
um I saw a figure I forgot to put on here of Kingdom Come, a new figure. We'll talk about that next week. Nice. Joel from The Last of Us, Pedro Pascal, new Hot Toys figure. Looked really, really cool.
00:47:03
Speaker
Lots of articulation, of of course, Hot Toys. um But the big news was today Hot Toys released their huge Galactus Hot Toys figure. two feet Over two feet tall.
00:47:17
Speaker
um Looks awesome. This is the very first look, official look of what Ralph Ennis and Ennis, whatever his name is going to look like with as Galactus. um It comes with minifigures from all the Fantastic Four, including the Silver Surfer.
00:47:31
Speaker
There's more pictures of that here. Just looks awesome. How much is that going to run you? Well, I'm guessing this will probably be, if the Hot Toys figures are are are around $300, I'm guessing this will probably be $280.
00:47:46
Speaker
This is probably going to over 700, 800. You're talking two times the size. um Also, we got figures of almost all of Pindexic 4, except for Johnny Storm. But do we do get a preview of what this is going to look like for all the Hot Toys figures.
00:48:00
Speaker
The Ben Grimm one looks amazing. It looks better than any other Ben Grimm Hot Toy figure or any statue that's ever come out. um It just looks great. um And Ben Grimm with a beard, I'm interested to see how that plays out. i know it's a comic thing that's happened before, but We do some pictures of, we get pictures of Reed Richards.
00:48:17
Speaker
The likeness on these are incredible. ah Another picture of Sue Storm with baby Franklin, Herbie, of course. um So yeah, it's, they're incredible figures. They just look great.
00:48:28
Speaker
um Wonder Woman, fast-tracking a movie. Sourced out on Variety this week that that's the case. we' We'll have to wait and see on that for sure. But um lot of lot of fans going after the girl who was in Andor.
00:48:43
Speaker
Andor's girlfriend want her to play that character. um There's another one I saw. The woman that was in Moon Knight, who was Moon Knight's love interest in that show. lot people are talking about her being Wonder Woman as well.
00:48:55
Speaker
Yeah. I haven't seen any other names. I don't know if you've seen any or not. But fast trackcking yeah fast-tracking that movie. ah Fans are fast-tracking it because they want to see it after Superman. I think just everybody wants to see that world open up now.
00:49:09
Speaker
And I think this is kind of the first logical step of that is bringing the Wonder Woman and Batman, of course. and We know that's no he's coming. so um John Bernthal, currently filming his um for currently filming his um special presentation. Just started this week. ah This is behind the scenes clips of him shooting somewhere in a deli in New York.
00:49:31
Speaker
um So yeah, it's right it's sort that interesting to see um how this leads up to so Spider-Man. know We know he's going to be in that. Probably going a direct lead up to that. so Interesting.
00:49:43
Speaker
Got brand new character posters for Fantastic Four First Steps. Comes out next week. Look great. <unk> ah And this is the best picture of Silver Surfer I've seen so far. I've kind of been iffy on the look, but the close-ups look of her looks like they've gotten better with the CGI.
00:50:02
Speaker
So yeah, very interested to see how that looks on the big screen. Also got a confirmation and look of Paul Walter Hauser as Mole Man. Very, very much comic accurate up to the mask and everything. So interesting to see that. Speaking of that movie, John Malkiff's red ghost character completely cut from the movie.
00:50:22
Speaker
The director said it was heartbreaking not to include him, but they took they changed the narrative to for the story and took him off there. So um I think it was in one of the trailers too. So interesting.
00:50:32
Speaker
um He also said in an interview this week, the hardest role to cast was Reed Richards, because he's a husband, he's a father, does anything to protect the family, he's a scientist, locked away in the lab. So there's a lot of parts to that character that he had to cast, and I think Pedro is just...
00:50:47
Speaker
He's just so versatile in his acting. i guess There's not really too many actors besides him they can bring in to to play a character like that. And finally in news, Tom Holland is talking about Spider-Man 4.
00:50:58
Speaker
And they're going back to old school filmmaking, shooting in real locations. They were restricted during COVID-19. um During the No Way Home shoots, they were all on sound stages, so now they're going back out in the environment to film this movie. That's kind of exciting to hear. Yeah.
00:51:14
Speaker
But, you know, we're still both kind of iffy on that, seeing how they're going to play that movie out. if It's going multiversal. Hopefully Grounded and Mixed of the Two would be better for me. But, yeah, I'll have wait and see. But that's it for news. this That's it for the show this week.
00:51:26
Speaker
um Next week, we'll talk about Dexter Resurrection. Coming out tonight and next Friday, but we'll talk about the first episode next week. um And So It Goes, a documentary on Billy Joel, debuts tonight, 8 8 p.m. on HBO Max, the first part.
00:51:43
Speaker
um Before we take our two-week break, I would like to talk about I Know What You Did Last Summer, and I Still Know What You Did Last Summer. The new movie, not doing great um as far as reviews are concerned, just came out today. um but we about this I've heard it's absolute garbage, but it's fun garbage.
00:52:01
Speaker
which is exactly what i expect from it. Yeah, that's kind of expected. Once you watch the first two, because you've never seen them, um you'll get that going into what what we're going to do. Okay, I'm going to watch those this weekend.
00:52:14
Speaker
um South Park premieres on Wednesday. I'm going to watch that. said going start the season, start the show off without going back and watching the old stuff. I'm going to start this new season.
00:52:25
Speaker
I believe P. Diddy's in the first episode. I believe there's a war with Canada again. ah it just it just piqued my interest. yeah um Coming out on Thursday, going to watch as much of it as I can because we've got Fantastic Four somewhere in there.
