Welcome to the Solarpreneur Podcast, where we teach you to take your solar business to the next level. My name is Taylor Armstrong. went from $50 in my bank account and struggling for groceries to closing 150 deals in the year and cracking the code on why sales reps fail.
00:00:19
Speaker
I teach you avoid the mistakes I made and bring in the top solar dogs of the industry to let you in on the secrets of generating more leads, falling up like a pro, and closing more deals.
00:00:31

What is a solopreneur you might ask? solopreneur is a new breed of solopro that is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve mastery and you are about to become one. Hey, what's going on, solarpreneurs? Welcome back to another podcast.
Episode Focus: Hidden Factors in Electricity Prices
00:00:44
Speaker
Today, we're going be talking about something that's hidden right behind our eyes that is making electricity prices skyrocket. So stay tuned and we're going to teach you how to leverage it in your deals and in your appointment setting to make homeowners want to go solar more than they want to breathe.
Travel Stories and Airline Frustrations
00:01:02
Speaker
Okay, welcome to the podcast. My name is Taylor Armstrong. We're here to help you close more deals, generate more leads and referrals, and have a much better time in the solar industry. Hope you're doing doing great. Hope you're gearing up for the summer. I'm just getting back from little week-long trip to Mexico, as you probably heard in the previous episode. And so forgive me if I'm a little bit groggy, dusting some cobwebs off here. were gone for six days. we' were supposed to be back Saturday, but we got our flight changed.
00:01:29
Speaker
Last minute, had to book another hotel. A little bit of a back and forth. Still trying to get the airline to reimburse us for the headache they put us through. If you ever fly Mexico, these people at Viva, Aeroboose, man, they sure give you the runaround if you're trying to get reimbursed for stuff. So hopefully they hear this. Reimburse me for the headache they cause us. If you know anyone that works at Viva, let me know.
00:01:54
Speaker
Hey, but all that aside, happy to be back. Happy to get back in the
Boosting Productivity with Strategic Rewards
00:01:58
Speaker
grind. And something that I was just talking to my team about today is that it's important to use strategic rewards and strategic maybe little trips, little me little mini vacations as ways to motivate yourself, kickstart you into...
00:02:12
Speaker
you know, the next month, the next quarter, or whatever it may be. Because I believe if you plan these trips, if you plan little rewards like that strategically, it's going to help you be much more effective in your regular day-to-day work, in your closing deals. Because your brain's going to start to use that as a little habit loop.
00:02:28
Speaker
If you haven't read the book, Power Habit, talks all about this. And you're gonna associate... the grind with the reward that you get after. So important to, you know, plan little rewards like
AI and Electricity: Rising Costs and Sales Opportunities
00:02:40
Speaker
that. Okay, but let's get into the topic of the episode and that is a hidden cost, a hidden thing that's happening that's making costs...
00:02:49
Speaker
for electricity all around the country skyrocket. If you don't know about this already, you're going to find out pretty soon because it's happening everywhere. And that is these AI data centers. They're going crazy. They're taking over. We're hearing more and more stories in the news about how they're building AI data centers in deserts. You got them in Nevada. You got them in Utah. Got them in California.
00:03:10
Speaker
Got them all over the country. you know, I'm just talking more on the West Coast. that's where i'm That's where I'm based at. But how can we use these data centers to create more of a problem and tell a story around it to just push on the wounds to create more pain for homeowners? We're going to get in a few ways we can use it. Just talk about a few things that are going on that you may not have known about and that you can leverage and use as a story in your appointments and in your deals. Okay, so we're going talk about what's happening. Shout out to my guy, David Conrique on my team. He actually sent us this article today and thought it was really interesting. But this is ah taken from an article on Fortune. We will link it in the show notes. But talks about how people over in Lake Tahoe, nearly 50,000 Lake Tahoe residents, have to find a new power source after their energy source looks to redirect lines to data centers.
00:04:01
Speaker
Pretty massive problem. So we're all joking, hey, we need to go blitz this area. So watch after this. We're going every solar team in the country wanting to go blitz around Lake Tahoe because of this article. Crazy what's going on They're getting 75% of their power redirected to these data centers. And essentially the company up there is saying, hey, um we're not really gonna have another option. We're going to have look for someone to provide the power. They're still keeping the lines there, obviously, but they're gonna have to look for someone that's actually going to produce the power that they can use.
00:04:31
Speaker
And what's going to happen? Their costs are going to skyrocket. They're going to have to look for you know, maybe smaller providers. They're probably going price gouged. It's really this cycle is that they're going to have to pay more and more because of the power shortage. So stories like this, we can tell a similar story and we can use what's happening in Lake Tahoe for our own customers, really, because it's happening everywhere. So even if it's in an area where They've got plenty of power. They've got more established power sources. You're not stopping AI. You're not stopping electric vehicles. It's everywhere. Okay, so how can we build the story around this and what are some points we can bring up to the homeowners? And you can keep it simple. I'll actually play a little clip of just some simple explaining I used today. can hear some simple ways to just bring it up to homeowners. talk about a few things a few ways you can dive maybe a little bit deeper and help these people understand so first i'll play a little clip of what used today just a simple explanation that you could use in your appointments today and then the other thing is um you're going to leave data centers and stuff going on yeah yeah but it's like
00:05:39
Speaker
So simple explanation like that. These homeowners were... other they increase in the price institute for spend an hour're like competing with all the bay data centers project that i right with do that so i'm only serious there's didn got all the black vehicles all that yeah sure did now crazy so it'squi it in so simple explanation like that these homeowners were intrigued by this story we told around AI electric vehicles.
00:06:06
Speaker
And a quick side note, especially with younger couples, with younger families, people that are more on the tech side of things, they're going to eat these AI explanations up. These are people you can really leverage this story, this problem of AI, go dive deep on. But make sure you're not, if it's someone that's older, someone that's not in technology, someone that's not really using much power, they don't have...
00:06:30
Speaker
the newest, latest, greatest technology, then maybe look for a different problem. You got to read the audience. You got to read the room.
Tailoring Sales Pitches to Tech-Savvy Consumers
00:06:37
Speaker
I've seen, I've had guys on my team where they're trying to talk about AI to people that are like elderly. They care that they don't even know what ChatGPT is. They're trying to talk about AI and all this. What's, what is AI? They don't even know. So you need to relate.
00:06:50
Speaker
problems to homeowners, you need to give them things they can relate to. Right. And so maybe it's maybe for you, maybe it's electric vehicles. But depending on the crowd, depending on the customer, you know, have that discernment, talk in ways that they can really relate to.
00:07:06
Speaker
So before you start going all AI on everybody, make sure it's the people that can relate to this and know what's going on. Okay, that being said, so what are some ways you can leverage the information with customers? So here's ah here's a big one. And that is, if you think about the grid, everywhere the grid started, it it wasn't set up for AI. We didn't put up power lines. We didn't put up all the transformers thinking that, oh, we're going to have ai we're going to have We're going to have all these data centers where people are going to be asking it to generate images.
00:07:39
Speaker
asking it to give them instant answers, asking it to be agents for them to do all these tasks. I don't think Thomas Edison was thinking of this when he invented the light bulb. And I don't think the people who put the grid, who started the grid, put up the power lines, they probably weren't thinking of this when they put in the transformers.
00:07:58
Speaker
So this is something you can bring up to your customers. yeah And look, Mr. Homeowner, When they added all the power lines, the big problem was they weren't thinking ai they weren't thinking electric vehicles. What do you think they were thinking at the time?
00:08:11
Speaker
Probably some light bulbs, probably some basic things. Who knows? I don't know if they had TV when the grid was set up. So they certainly weren't prepared for this massive energy need and the energy crisis that we're in. hey You can do some research and I'm by no means an expert in all this, but these AI denists at data centers, a lot of them use the same power as a small city. And so think of it, it's like as if we're building a whole nother city in a short timeframe and all of a sudden we need power, we need massive amounts of power for that. And then the heat generated by that's a whole nother top conversation is generating a ton of heat to actually cool it down, keep it cool, massive amounts of power that's needed.
00:08:51
Speaker
So this is something you can bring up to your homeowners is that the option is basically the utilities, they have to upgrade the infrastructure. And who pays for that? The ratepayers pay for it. How do they collect it from the ratepayers? They raise the rates. It's a massive problem. And if you can explain this to homeowners,
00:09:09
Speaker
in a way that makes sense to them. Don't get super complicated when trying to set appointments. But again, read the room. And if they can understand this, if you can break it down to them in simple layman's terms, you're going to see light bulbs go off in their head. And they're going to understand that this is much more of a problem than they thought. And all of a sudden, solar, it's not just about going green. It's not just about saving some money.
Energy Competition: Residents vs. AI Data Centers
00:09:32
Speaker
It's about future-proofing them Because all the uncertainty with AI, if you can get them to see that it's a massive problem, they're going be bought in to really protecting themselves for the future. hey Another thing to consider is they're now competing for this power. All the AI denist data centers, like we just read in the article about Lake Tahoe, this entire area, Lake Tahoe, they're competing. 49,000 people are competing with massive corporations.
00:09:58
Speaker
with Google, with OpenAI, with Microsoft, Facebook, all these massive companies. Who do you think is going to win? Who do you think is going to make the utilities more money? a town of 49,000 people or massive data centers that's using as much power as an entire city? Probably the data centers. So it's ah it's a game that they're going to lose. It's a losing battle.
00:10:19
Speaker
So once customers can understand this, they know, hey, this is your solution. This is how you don't lose is you now generate your own power, you now protect yourself against the future, you now form your own microgrid. This is how you can win without be affected by all this craziness that we have no control over. So hopefully these gives you some things to use as you're out there setting appointments, as you're out there closing deals. If you can effectively help people see this problem, you will be more effective in closing deals because the more you can press on that wound, easier it is to bring in your solution, easier it is to get the deal that day, and easier it is to see that they shouldn't be waiting on this because these are real-time things that are happening and real-time result is that they're going to pay way more for power
00:11:07
Speaker
There's incentives that are drying up and if they don't do it, someone else will and they're not going to get much less of a benefits. So use this in your sales today. You can even print out some slicks. Great thing. Don't use it with everyone, but it's good have a little slick on AI. Maybe you print out the same Lake Tahoe article.
00:11:25
Speaker
could be a great thing. So I hope this helps you out in your closing today. and in your generating more leads and generating more income in

Introducing SolarScout and Special Offers
00:11:53
Speaker
And as we are gearing up for the summer, I realized if we do the same thing we always did, we're going to get the same results. But if I want to increase my deal flow, I need to do something different to get an advantage.
00:12:04
Speaker
Then we discovered an app called Solar Scout. But it's not a door knocking app. It's a data platform that shows us who is likely to go solar in our market. It shows us who has previously applied for solar but later canceled the deal, who has moved in recently, and even how much electricity the homes are using in a given neighborhood.
00:12:23
Speaker
It's been working for a lot of teams across the country and now I'm on board too. I'm going to be one of the first to use SolarScout in San Diego so I decided to partner up. But I told them, hey, I'm going to talk about SolarScout on my show, you need to give my listeners a great deal. And they did.
00:12:38
Speaker
So go to solarscout.app forward slash Taylor and book a demo with them and you'll get 10% off your first month when you sign up. That's solarscout.app forward slash Taylor.
