Speaker: to continue in solar cells door -to -door cells however you're selling it Something that I've come to realize after 10 years doing this, that nothing is more important than your health.
Speaker: if you don't prioritize that it's going to be very Tough to have longevity in this career. So we're going to be jamming on that and a whole lot more. Welcome to the podcast. My name is Taylor Armstrong. We're here to help you close more deals, generate more leads and referrals, and have a much better time in the solar industry. And of course, stay healthy while you're at it.
Speaker: And ah if you have not already. Please go leave us a rating, review, Apple, iTunes, Spotify. We're coming at you free and available every Tuesday and Friday coming the end of the summer months here. So I hope you are pushing hard to the finish line. We all know summer is the best time to sell solar.
Speaker: So don't take it for granted. And so let's get into this topic. Just something I've been thinking about more and more, especially. um I got three kids now. you know, gets tougher and tougher sometimes. to sleep with kids waking up at the night. I mean, as you get older, you start to see that your body can't do the same things as you could before. At the time of this recording, I'm actually coming off a knee surgery. And, you know, it's just something you don't want to take for granted. So I thought, why not do a little podcast on...
Speaker: you know, some health tricks. And just a disclaimer, I'm not like a trainer. I'm not a health expert. So, you know, don't don't take any of this as a law or anything, but these are just some things that have worked for me over the years. and Some things I've been focusing on that I've noticed make a huge difference in how I show up to sell the way I feel out there.
Speaker: It directly correlates with my confidence as I'm knocking doors, directly correlates with how much energy I have. So it's something you should pay attention to if it's... something that's not a huge priority for you, it's definitely gonna affect you.
Speaker: ah in your cells because every high performer, every top performer I know in solar. They take health seriously. They have the energy to get the job done because they're taking their health seriously. So let's get into a few things. I'm going to talk about three things in specific that have helped me, especially recently. Hopefully it'll give you some ideas, some things to chew on here.
Speaker: So the first one. Let's talk about the importance of sleep. When I first started in sales, this was back in 2012, I started in pest control. And back then it was just guys were.
Speaker: slamming energy drinks. Slamming Red Bulls. I think that's that's like the only energy drink I remember back then. You know, now you got like a million options for any drinks. But we were living off frozen pizzas at night. Those little Totino's pizzas. We were slamming the walls along with frozen burritos and cereal.
Speaker: And um... Getting a little sleep, waking up, slamming an energy drink. maybe popping an Adderall, and that was it. We were off to the races. And so I look at it now. If I were to live that same lifestyle, there's no way.
Speaker: that i could um perform right I just wouldn't be able to do it. And it's something you need to think about even. As you're planning like blitzes, doing things with your team. Make sure you're getting the proper fuel for your body, particularly with sleep. It's something you start to...
Speaker: Get less sleep. You notice it. Maybe not. today but the next day catches up with you and so something that I've been prioritizing lately and tracking I got my little or a rain gear.
Speaker: and actually lets you see the sleep data. right so people use different things you got the aura rings You got the whoop brand bands. A lot of my buddies use those too, but I think it's really useful. to track your sleep and really see how it's correlating with your day -to -day activities.
Speaker: with your knocking with your prospecting. What are we doing? Because anything you start tracking will start to improve. So a few hacks that have helped me is... Start to track your sleep. Because you'll notice that when you start tracking it, it becomes more of a priority for you.
Speaker: You start to think, oh, well, you know, I'm feeling a little off today. Let's see how much sleep I actually got. I got less than six hours today. Could be way. So it becomes more of a priority. when you start tracking it. And then the other thing, this is something that I did recently.
Speaker: I got ah blackout curtains. for Our room. You know, I was seeing my sleep data and I was seeing that I would wake up multiple times at night. Getting these blackout curtains, making the room pitch black.
Speaker: It's been a game changer for me. So we'll see if we can link some in the show notes. Blackout curtains, really inexpensive. I think they're 20 bucks, 20, 30 bucks. But I've noticed my sleep scores, my sleep time sleeping. Staying asleep, it's gone way up since we got these blackout curtains. So consider getting some ah blackout curtains. for your crib.
Speaker: And then, you know, if you... Other small notes, if you're someone that has a hard time. prioritizing sleep, maybe you're a gamer, maybe you're staying up night late. For me, it's a little bit easier. Once you get the kids, you're kind of forced to stay in a schedule because if I stay up.
Speaker: Wait, I'm... Still going to have to wake up the same time with kids. They're up at like 6 .30 to 7 every single day. If not earlier, so. it Becomes a little bit easier, but maybe you're a single dude listening to this. Maybe you don't have as many responsibilities. Start to consider setting like an alarm for when you need to go to bed because most people, it's not that they have a waking up problem.
Speaker: It's that they have a going to bed problem. If you go to bed the time you're supposed to, then it shouldn't be that hard to wake up. So rather than thinking, oh, I got to set my alarm, I got to do whatever it takes, set my phone across the room.
Speaker: Make sure I'm up at 6 a .m. Why don't you try actually going to bed at a decent time? and see what that does. to your ability to actually wake up when you want to. So consider instead of setting an alarm to wake up. Set the alarm to go to bed.
Speaker: Right. 10 30 11 o 'clock set that alarm then you know you should be winding down for the day So it's another thing that's helped me. And then, you know, just. Small thing. um I don't underestimate.
Speaker: The ability, if I'm just wrecked. For me, I always do better taking a short snooze in the car, just kicking back. and refreshing rather than trying to fight it so much. I think some people it's like they're out on the doors.
Speaker: And there. Like a zombie there. Maybe don't be afraid. Go to the car. This could be somewhat controversial. Maybe the managers listen to this. They don't want their guys to do this, but. it's like If you need to.
Speaker: Go take a snooze in the car. Go take 20 minutes. Set the alarm. Take the snooze. right And we're not saying go to your car, get on Instagram for 20 minutes. Let's go to the car, take the snooze.
Speaker: and then get back out For me, I do that way way more often than trying to chug another energy drink. Refreshes me way more than... Trying to, you know, put junk in my body and get more energy. Okay. I still chug the occasional energy energy drink, but. Try not to rely on it, right? So that's the first thing. First hack, make sure you're getting the sleep. Number two. with the nutrition.
Speaker: And again, not a food expert here, still working on my food habits, but something that helps me tremendously is just making sure I have the right fuel in the car. When you're out knocking doors, when you're out going to appointments, the worst thing, I hate feeling hungry out there.
Speaker: And then I hate feeling like, ah you know, I'm just going to grab to the run to the gas station, grab a Snickers, grab whatever junk I can find. Before I would do that. But I think the biggest game changer gets some snacks.
Speaker: You know, I learned this from Taylor McCarthy. He would talk about just getting the cooler, putting his drinks, putting his Gatorades. and then putting his healthy snacks in there. Okay, run to Costco. Get the snacks ready.
Speaker: And then you're not only going to save money and time. because you're not going to have that 30 -minute gas station break, but you're going to feel a lot better. Because you're going to be getting... the the things that you pre -planned, right, that are healthy.
Speaker: For me right now, I'm loving the... um The, what is it? The Fairlife. protein shakes from costco we go and get those there's another brand off to post it in the notes here but Actually, they were like. Half the price I think is the Fairlife ones, and I liked them just as much. and then check the ingredients. Maybe they're not as healthy. But yeah, get your protein shakes. Get your jerky. I like to throw down some jerky.
Speaker: And then I love the protein bars. You know, I'm loving i'm loving the G to G. protein bars get pick me up a case of those at costco these are things that i pack I'm out there and I'm not having to go make these gas station fast food runs. It's like, you know what you're feeding your body.
Speaker: You're staying healthy. You're staying fueled. So yeah, and then... You know, I'm i'm married, and fortunate to have a great wife. She's throwing down some awesome dinners at nights. But if I were a single person listening to this. If I were low on time.
Speaker: consider doing these there's like these meal prep services that I think are fire. They're like healthy meals. And yeah, I think there's like Factor, a few other companies like that. High protein. healthy food and so you don't have to get back.
Speaker: 9, 10 o 'clock at night for an appointment and worry about what you're going to eat. Try to either meal prep or have stuff planned. Few tips with your nutrition. Make sure you're prioritizing nutrition. And then last but not least, when it comes to fitness.
Speaker: Okay, for me, I love going to the gym. I love doing jujitsu, things like that. And I've never really struggled with. you know getting out there or some people it's like yeah i gotta to get up go to the gym but uh What's worked for me is just having someone that I'm accountable to.
Speaker: um Most of May. This whole career, I've actually had a coach that's just given me workouts. Did I pee? Okay, and you can get... inexpensive coaches, you can go and chat GPT and all that. But for me, I know if I'm paying for something, I'm going to use it. If I'm paying for a gym membership, if I'm paying a coach.
Speaker: I'm for sure going to get out there and... use what i paid for that keeps me going showing up going to the gym getting some jujitsu in. Of course, right now I'm going to my physical therapy too. recovering from this knee injury.
Speaker: But ah yeah, make sure you. Keep the workouts fun. keep the accountability going we got a cool thing going on our team We call it ah Valor Hard, but it's just all the people that are into fitness on our solar team. We get them all in a group chat and we're all posting workouts. We're posting things we're eating.
Speaker: nutrition advice and it's just a cool way that's helped hold people accountable on our team. and keep people motivated. Sometimes we'll go do workouts together. So maybe you start a group like that. Maybe you start like a company 75 hard. We've done that several times too.
Speaker: um or just some form of accountability. Okay, but make sure you prioritize these things. Again, I've been doing this 10 years and I don't think I would have been able to continue in this. without prioritizing. things like sleep, things like nutrition.
Speaker: And things like working out. making fitness their priority. Because all the money in the world that you make doesn't matter if you're not healthy. Doesn't matter if you're not happy.
Speaker: And it doesn't matter. if you don't have a higher power, if you don't have some type of faith too. So that's what we're all about. Keeping it 100 in faith, family, fitness, finance. Make sure you get your priorities straight. this whole solar journey.
Speaker: You got to think, what am I doing it for? What am I making this money for? was to have success in all areas of life. And there will be seasons, but make sure you are prioritizing. your fitness and your health.
Speaker: You will not regret it. And that's how I think in the long run, you'll have much better results in solar. and you will achieve much greater things. as you make health the priority.
Speaker: okay so This isn't a health podcast, but hopefully this gives you some things to think about. As it's... um you know, tied to your solar cells. So um let me know any other things you have done.

Speaker: I love you and we'll see you next time. So some of you already know that I run my own door -to -door sales team here in San Diego. And as we are gearing up for the summer, I realized if we do the same thing we always did, we're going to get the same results. But if I want to increase my deal flow, I need to do something different to get an advantage.
Speaker: Then we discovered an app called Solar Scout. But it's not a door knocking app. It's a data platform that shows us who is likely to go solar in our market. It shows us who has previously applied for solar but later canceled the deal. who has moved in recently, and even how much electricity the homes are using in a given neighborhood.
Speaker: It's been working for a lot of teams across the country and now I'm on board too. I'm going to be one of the first to use Solar Scout in San Diego, so I decided to partner up. But I told them, hey, if I'm going to talk about Solar Scout on my show, you need to give my listeners a great deal, and they did.
Speaker: So go to solarscout .app. forward slash tailor and book a demo with them and you'll get 10 % off your first month when you sign up. That's solarscout .app forward slash Taylor. Okay, back to the show.
