FA Cup Draw Reaction

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello, everybody, and welcome back to the Daily Ipswich, brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. It is your Tuesday edition today, normally be a tactics Tuesday. We've been in an FA Cup weekend, you know, it's not, we can't give it the same sort of coverage as we would a Premier League game, you know, because the reality is most people who played on Saturday are probably not going to be in the team come this weekend at Villa Park. So we're mixing up today. We're going to do an FA Cup draw reaction.
00:00:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
Draw has been made tonight at the time of recording, obviously yesterday by the time you're listening to this, this is all. So we've all seen the draw in the last 20 minutes or so. We'll sort of see how it sets us up and whether we can dare to dream of a further progression in the FA Cup. But joining me, Rob Bins, to go through all of that on today's

Host Reunion & Personal Updates

00:01:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
episode. Firstly, is Richard Popple, me and you together again, mate?
00:01:05
Richard
Yeah mate, absolutely, Dream Team back together.
00:01:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, so you can't get rid of this at the moment, listeners must hate or hate the sound of our voice by now, but we've combatting that problem today though, because you might be stuck with both of us two again, but we've got Tom here with us again for the first time in about 13 episodes, something like that.
00:01:13
Richard
Oh no, I know.
00:01:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
you've You've had a busy old time, haven't you mate?
00:01:27
Tom Crack - Ipswich
give Give or take, Rob, give or take. Yeah, it's it's been it's been a crazy few couple of weeks in in in my life from moving house, getting a new new new place for employment and going holiday to Norway. Not workers, I think you put it out on the pod, unfortunately.
00:01:43
Tom Crack - Ipswich
preaching the gospel in Norway for the daily up switch you know we've got some fans over there we appreciate everyone listening over there as well as we do everywhere else but yeah went went to

Ipswich Town's FA Cup Performance

00:01:50
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Norway he tried but trying my hand at skiing as i said to you guys for the first time and failed spectacularly but you learn from your mistakes i was away obviously for i think it's fair to say our bleak as a result of the season so i was kind of happy not on that falling very poorly as i saw on the hundredth episode reaction uh episode as well which You just can't time it right, really, can you? Sometimes that was a proper shame there. But a great result over the weekend whilst I was away coming back. Good to see, again, like we said, was championship opposition, as you guys said, on Monday's episode. But, you know, it's been some great memories at the recurrying in the past year or so, and it's good to get another on the board and some players as well who very much needed a goal or two under their belt in Jack Clark, if the others had good performance all round. And Cup Run could be on the cards, hopefully.
00:02:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hopefully, yeah. So that 100th episode, we couldn't have done that much worse, could we? That that blew up quite badly in our face. tried We planned that, trying to make it a big thing, didn't we?
00:02:39
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Not your fault.
00:02:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
We had to push it back from its initial day because we missed an episode, because no one was around to record earlier in the week. Pushed it back. Then we only lost to Southampton. The new date meant we went from having four of us to two of us.
00:02:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
We got you to record a voice note, and I think you said something Your voicemail said something like, I'm sure the show was going well when we just spent 10 minutes talking about how we got beat at home at the bottom of the league. Everything sort of plucked in our face in that part, but and well maybe we'll get it right for 150 when that comes up, because that'll probably be in about three weeks, the speed we're flying through these
00:03:05
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Needed some optimism I guess.
00:03:11
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Yeah, exactly.

Upcoming Match Strategy

00:03:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
episodes at the moment.
00:03:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
But ah do before we get on to the how we move on in the cup then, lads, said and we'll dive in for a mini tactics Tuesday on the old Coventry result, because like I say, it's going to be very tough to sort of look too much into it as it was with Bristol Rovers, because the fact that I say, if you look at the team we had out, it's probably going to be Palmer and maybe Philogene, who we see from the start against Villa on Saturday. But Tom, I asked you, me and Rich spoke about him yesterday, that more you sort of it was first opportunity from the start. ah ah you Where do you stand on him from what you've seen so far? and Is he and your team
00:03:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Villa Park like me and Rich both said that we'd like to see him from the start in that game.
00:04:01
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Yeah, stef it was definitely great to see him get his first goal for the club, wasn't it? You know, I think he's, of all the players we've brought in in January, it was very much the name we were really excited about. Maybe you should have come in last summer, but of course you couldn't get that one over the line with all the other transfers we had.
00:04:15
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Yeah, I think of him, it's the area of the pitch we've needed addressing a lot really since the start of the season, positions throughout the season have emerged as ones we'd need to improve upon, like the goalkeeper, for example.

Player Acquisition & Impact

00:04:24
Tom Crack - Ipswich
But the right really, I think from the first game of the season with Wes Burns out on the right and Ben...
00:04:32
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Sorry, who got injured at Brentford? I'm so sorry, I've forgotten.
00:04:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll bet.
00:04:35
Tom Crack - Ipswich
I've been out of the loop, guys. Yes, thank you. like you know
00:04:39
Richard
You haven't been out of the loop that long. That was about three months ago.
00:04:42
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Sorry, sorry, sorry. But yes, so, you know, that injuries and quality on the right side is really, it's been noticeable from very early on. And so I think to get a player of what is hopefully good quality and a good prospect is like what we should have in, in Jayden Phillips. And so I really hope he can be that guy. I think, yeah, like you said, with the exception of Palmer, those two really are the two you think heading into Villa Park on Saturday that could potentially start.
00:05:07
Tom Crack - Ipswich
against Seoul Club, as you said, Richard on Monday's show as well. I really think it's a great chance that you'd like to think he should be proper up for it. to I don't know if proven wrong was the right sense, because obviously he must have a great ratio. The club haven't been there and on for many years. But, you know, nonetheless, he should be up for it. And I really hope he can put his best foot forward on the weekend. But he's one of those players as well. We brought in January some real quality. I know, like, where we are in the league isn't maybe reflective of the players we have on the pitch. But, you know, but you look at that on paper, like the lap,
00:05:36
Tom Crack - Ipswich
phillogine and see some proper quality there. And it's a shame we are where we are. I just really hope these next 13, 14 games we've got left, something special can happen. Because I think on the pitch, especially going forward now, the goals haven't necessarily reflected it. But we have the quality now, I think, to really... I just hope it's not too late. But we have the quality now, I think, to really hopefully find the net that we're often, and hopefully a Palmer coming in as well. We've gone a bit of a sidetrack from him. We're going to have some more stability in goal as well, because I think that's really, really scuttled us throughout the season. But yeah, I think Philogene, it was great to see him get his first goal and really, really push on in a town shirt.
00:06:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it's a good round. It's a good squad performance, wasn't it? And I think that's the key because look we said, you said it right at the start, Tom, that, you know, we got some players who were in needed goals, got some goals. And it was the same after Bristol Rose as well. But it's going to be really important that we get, we get the rest of the squad fire in, isn't it? Because me and Rich mentioned the striker situation yesterday, the fact that Hurst had run his race yesterday and we had to put the lap on the bench and bring him on for 10 minutes, which was an unnecessary risk apart from the fact that it kind of was necessary because we haven't got anyone else to

Team Morale & Challenges

00:06:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
play up front. And so Smodix has just got injured again straight after coming back. So it seemed like we were going to play down the route of keep Hurston to lap and then CSO could do a shift if he needs to. Broadhead could do a shift if he needs to. Smodix could do a shift if he needs to. Well, one of those three is down already. And so if too many get injured, then we won't be able to drag them out of the three behind. So it's really important that we got some of those squad players firing one a rich
00:07:11
Global Sports Podcast Network
Good opportunity for them.
00:07:13
Richard
Yeah, definitely. I think just for them really, you know, I think also in a season where you're not winning many games, it doesn't really matter who's playing picking up a win is just really important.
00:07:23
Richard
We've won five games all year, two in, two in the cup and and three in the league.
00:07:29
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Yeah.
00:07:29
Richard
So, you know, that's not many wins is it? So obviously any team and any footballer is going to feel better after winning a game. I think for the whole squad, it was just a massive boost. And like we were saying on the other part, like, you know, to score four goals is obviously important as well.
00:07:43
Richard
And yeah, I think, you know, going back to the Philogene point, it would be nice to see him at the weekend and then see, so we'll probably come back into the side as well. But I did watch Villa against Spurs and like they were pretty profligate in front of goal, but they looked, they looked pretty good to be honest. So, yeah, that game obviously will be previewing later in the week, but you know, on their day Villa are a kind of match for anyone and they're a real handful.
00:08:08
Richard
We obviously gave them a very good game at Portman Road earlier in the season, but it's going to be a tough, tough ask to repeat that, I think.
00:08:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, so certainly it's going to be a tough one in that game, definitely. But it's nice to have a lot of confidence boost, like you say. It's easy to forget how little games we won this season. And I think you said yesterday as well, didn't you?
00:08:26
Richard
I think so.
00:08:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Was it the first time since March, did you say, that we'd scored four goals in a game? So it's a few rarities to enjoy there, definitely.
00:08:34
Richard
Yeah. Yep.
00:08:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
But that will do for looking back. It's time to look forward. So we're going to have a quick break from one of our sponsors. and then we'll be diving into who we've got in the fifth round in our first appearance since 2007.
00:09:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
We are back for the second part of today's show. So it's the big talking point, lads, that's happened in between last show and going into this one. The fifth round draw has been made. Obviously we're in the hat for the first time in a long time. We don't get in the fifth round hat particularly often, especially in recent history. And we've done and we still don't actually know who we're playing yet because we are playing the winner of Exeter and Nottingham Forest who played tonight.
00:09:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we're still a bit in the blue. It's a fair assumption that it's going to be Nottingham forest away, but obviously we we

FA Cup Outcomes & Speculations

00:09:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
don't know for sure yet. And like I was just saying before we came on, you know, there's been one, there's been one top four team who's lost in Devon unexpectedly in this round of the FA Cup already. So you never know that Lightning might strike tro twice, but Tom, I asked you first, how do you feel about that draw? You know, you know, the other teams who are in it, we we haven't got a hundred percent who were playing yet, but Where do you sit with this and all chances of progressing?
00:10:17
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Mm.
00:10:22
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Well, you know, it depends really if it affects the camel off a shock tonight, obviously, again, a time recording, it's very unlikely, but in all likelihood, it is going to be a trip to to the city ground. And, you know, we I think it's kind of a drab affair over the season. I think that's really before Forest really started to find their feet and like be one of the top sides this season. But it's it's going to be a ah difficult ask heading to the city ground if it is who we are facing. But You never know. Cup football's a weird one, like we've seen this week. And as you said in Plymouth, like, yes, okay. We're in the same league as Forrest. So it wouldn't obviously be as big of a David Goliath sort of shock win if we were to get victory there. But as you said, a Monday show, we are now one of the underdogs heading into the tournament. And, you know, it's, it's an awkward, sometimes the cup can be an awkward time. And I think for both clubs, especially with us, we're trying to survive in the league.
00:11:08
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Obviously it's a welcome addition having a cup run, but sometimes it could be a distracting one as well. Maybe that'll be the same for Forest as well with City and Chelsea maybe breathing down their necks for third or fourth, wherever they are at the moment. It could be similar for them and we we may play them at the right time. The game's taking place when, again, it's first weekend weekend of March isn't it yeah yeah at the moment at the moment they're all three o'clock because they haven't been designated for television game jig so I want to still to go through but you know it's it's the fifth round again it's you know as James said start the season be nice of a cup runner and it is isn't it you know the the other cups become slightly diluted in recent years I think unfortunately with
00:11:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
weekend of the first.
00:11:26
Richard
First of March. Yeah, first much.
00:11:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:11:43
Tom Crack - Ipswich
television and it seems to be going even further in that direction with it moving away from BBC and ITV even more forward next season by the looks of things but for the time being it still has that sort of history and that sort of vintage feel to it doesn't it with the sort of small teams playing the big ones as we sort of like later in city and stuff like that so I really hope we can do something and then A trip to Wembley would be nice, wouldn't it? I know you said, Rob, we are one of the few sides yet to go there. And it's surprising, isn't it? You think that stadium has been around for, what, coming on 20 years now almost. And when you said that, I was like, I can't be right. But yeah, it really is the case, isn't it? Most teams, even some like National League sides have all gone there now. Like I'm from like around just near the Cambridge area. And I remember when they went there once in like 2008, maybe in a random playoff final or something. So even like sides in that part of the country, I managed to get there. So it's,
00:12:28
Tom Crack - Ipswich
it's very much a list we don't want to be on and a day out at Wembley would be fantastic. Obviously our last time there was a big, big, obviously it wasn't the new one but at the time at Wembley it was very much a big, big day for the club so hopefully we can have another one again soon. But if we do come against Forest I think it'll be a really difficult game of course but it's cup football. You only need to be good on your day rather than the whole season don't you?
00:12:49
Richard
So what are you getting here for being meat mediocre for 20 years?
00:12:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:12:51
Richard
we weren't We weren't bad enough to be in the St.
00:12:53
Tom Crack - Ipswich
you
00:12:54
Richard
Johnson's paint trophy or whatever the hell it is. And we weren't good enough to sort of Papa John's here and we weren't good enough to sort of like get there with the big boys.
00:12:57
Tom Crack - Ipswich
ajos wherever it's called yeah yeah
00:13:02
Richard
So yeah, we we we are we are due a trip for sure.
00:13:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
So we must be that we must be the biggest club to not be on there because famously it was Newcastle wasn't it and then they've made obviously they're in that there is going to go there for a cup final this year they went there for a cup final couple of years ago that I think there's a few technicalities in there.
00:13:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's a few teams that scrape and bar on playing Spurs there in the Premier League, rather than actually being there for a semi-final or a final thing, which I don't think should count.
00:13:22
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Papa John's, whatever it's called, yeah.
00:13:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
But we we need to get ourselves off the list sooner rather than later.
00:13:29
Richard
Well, I suppose, Rob, as well. But what, what what you know, know, ah yeah what, oh, yeah.
00:13:32
Tom Crack - Ipswich
I've got the list here if you want to hear it, guys. I've got the list here.
00:13:35
Richard
So what, hold on.
00:13:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, yeah, go
00:13:35
Richard
What's the best definition of a a big team? what's the What's the definition of that? Like side to the ground or something?
00:13:40
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Do you want me to go through who there is and then you guys can make a decision from that?
00:13:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, go on then.
00:13:45
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Because I've got them here.
00:13:45
Richard
Please.
00:13:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'll see if I've made an idiot myself.
00:13:45
Tom Crack - Ipswich
There are a few, yeah.
00:13:47
Tom Crack - Ipswich
So obviously, there's six clubs. There's six clubs, including us. So you've obviously got Ipswich. And then I won't go in order of what I think is quality. I'll just name what it is here on the site.
00:13:57
Tom Crack - Ipswich
So you've got Atkinson Stanley.
00:13:59
Richard
Yeah we're bigger than them.
00:14:00
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Colchester, Colchester, who are our friends next door, Crawley Town, Hartlepool United.
00:14:01
Richard
Bigger.
00:14:04
Richard
Bigger.
00:14:05
Tom Crack - Ipswich
And then this one, I think maybe contentious in terms of if we're big of them.
00:14:06
Richard
Big.
00:14:09
Tom Crack - Ipswich
And it's a team that has won the Premier League. It's Blackburn Rovers, they have not been to Wembley yet.
00:14:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
hello nor nos Yeah, didn't expect that.
00:14:14
Tom Crack - Ipswich
So I saw them really the two biggest sides have yet to go to New Wembley yet.
00:14:17
Richard
That's unbelievable isn't it?
00:14:19
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Yeah. They kind of went down, ah like when the New Wembley kind of came up, so to speak, like their sort of heyday in the prem kind of, but then again, you think,
00:14:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
yes most so yeah they Yeah, I Let me say, you need to talk about being average long for that, or mediocre for a long period of time, like rich set, I suppose, Blackburn are in that category of us really, aren't they?
00:14:28
Tom Crack - Ipswich
If your playoff appearance or something like that would have seen them that get there, but...
00:14:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's good. That was good. now
00:14:39
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Yeah, very much so.
00:14:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
Like you said, they sort of, they dropped off writers when he was getting built again.
00:14:41
Richard
Oh, look.
00:14:44
Tom Crack - Ipswich
And their boss just left off of handing in his notice, didn't he?
00:14:45
Richard
He did, yeah, he did.
00:14:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
then I know.
00:14:48
Richard
This is what we've been missing though, Tom. Stats like that, facts, superb stuff.
00:14:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Actually fact, someone actually fact check and the stuff we come up with.
00:14:57
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Can I only help?
00:15:00
Richard
I know, it's good.
00:15:00
Tom Crack - Ipswich
If you say it with confidence it all sounds true, doesn't it?
00:15:01
Richard
It's good stuff. Yeah.
00:15:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's good stuff until you realize that I make up half the stuff I say and eventually I'll get away.
00:15:08
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Don't give out the secrets, Rob.
00:15:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I just try and quote stats without actually trying to read them beforehand. I just try and do them from memory from three days per hour or something.
00:15:14
Tom Crack - Ipswich
mr
00:15:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
that But rich Rich, we're in an interesting position here, aren't we, with this draw?
00:15:18
Tom Crack - Ipswich
It's all good, mate.
00:15:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Because it say it was they're so far apart. It's literally going to be the lowest team left in it or the highest team left in it, depending on which way this result goes. So it's quite hard to look ahead, really, isn't it, until we know how that result of that game plays out on tonight.
00:15:31
Richard
Yeah.
00:15:31
Tom Crack - Ipswich
yeah
00:15:37
Richard
Well, it's also, you know, it's a real representation of kind of like where it's, you know, come, haven't we? And so quickly because we were playing extra a couple of years ago, beating them obviously famously on the final day of the season.
00:15:47
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Final day.
00:15:49
Richard
Yeah. to get out a league one finally, and then all of a sudden we, you know, we could have an all-premium league time against Knox forest to a flying and could finish in the champions league this year. So it's a real kind of, yeah.
00:16:00
Richard
It's an interesting sort of draw in that sense. But I actually think, I mean, I was talking to you about it, Rob. I think the away draw kind of suits us, to be perfectly honest. It would have been good in a way to get a home draw and maybe get that monkey off our back. And, you know, I know we beat Chelsea, but like we've been so poor at home. And that ultimately, if we do go down, is the thing that's going to cost us really. and So I think away from home is probably our best bet anyway. And I think forest.
00:16:25
Richard
Clearly they're the better team. Clearly they're having a brilliant season and they're full of confidence. But I think their focus will be the Champions League and the league, I think, because they, like I was saying to you before we started recording that, I didn't realize they were six points clear of a fifth or even sixth. So they do have a really good chance of of getting it because the team's fighting around their Man City. You never rule them out, but they're showing a lot of inconsistency. Newcastle have just dropped a couple of games from nowhere. Villa can't play after Europe.
00:16:55
Richard
and are still in Europe. and So I think they've got an amazing chance to get in the Champions League. And I think, is that going to be their focus rather than the FA Cup potentially? And that might give us a bit of an opportunity. That's also assuming, obviously, they get past Exeter. Hopefully they don't. And we have a trip down to Devon, and which would be a fun day out. And obviously, we would be very heavy favourites to go through if if we got that tie.
00:17:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, look, obviously we're very early doors, I'd say. It's hard to say when you don't know who you're playing, but when we look at when the dates played, not Nottingham Forest have got Arsenal at home in the midweek beforehand, and then Manchester City at home the following week.
00:17:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
So if you if you put that run of three games together, and then they've got Newcastle away the Sunday the sunday before that as well.
00:17:38
Richard
Yeah.
00:17:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
as So if you put that run of four games, Newcastle away, Arsenal at home, Ipswich Home in the Cup, City at home. There's quite a clear outlier there in that game in terms of what won. You'd have to, in terms of if you needed to rest players and rotate the squad that could very well, could not fall in our favour at that point, you could say. And then obviously look at our run as well. We certainly spoke about the importance of the games like Man United and Crystal Palace, which are either side of it for us, that they're the sort of games we've got to get something in. but
00:18:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
It'll be interesting to see what sort of team gets put out. And again, I suppose that will all depend on who ends up going through, but it's a really, it's a really tough question, like I say, until we see the result of that game. But I want to number from both of you just to wrap this section up. I'll go with you first, Tom. Between one and 10, how do you fancy our chances at first glance of a first quarter final since 93?
00:18:42
Richard
oh Is it 93?
00:18:43
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Oh, bloody. Yeah. Wow.
00:18:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, I'm lost to Arsenal.
00:18:46
Tom Crack - Ipswich
I'd say I'll get, I'll get, I'll get, I'll give it i'll give it a six. I think I might be a bit of just playing it safe there, but you know, like I said, with, with, with a league fixture against Suarez, I know we almost managed to get a draw there in the season, but.
00:19:01
Tom Crack - Ipswich
believe fixture against Forrest at the moment you are kind of just hoping and praying that you don't come out too battered so to speak heading there but it's a cup game you you can't write it I think you know it really does like it's it's kind of a toss for coin isn't it like who can really come out on top like form kind of goes out the window but as I said in in a cup game and certain players who may not get the chance to come into the squad. I know obviously Forest is much harder position, but I will imagine that that that squad may be a bit different to what we're used to seeing in terms of the standard 11 Premier League, even if it is a better opposition than we have seen in terms of Bristol Rovers and Coventry. So that may be good for us as well. Having people hungry players in the pitch, you don't get the chance so often. So I'll say i'll say a six out of 10. You never know. Obviously, Forest are a big, big club, big, big history and having a great season. So It's hard to look past them, isn't it? But a quarter of a final would be fantastic. Really, really good in what's been quite a difficult season.
00:19:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, Rich, what would your number be?
00:19:58
Richard
Do you know what, since you bought up who Forest would actually have in the week before that game, should they get there? I actually put as high as that. I'd go for maybe a seven, because Newcastle away and then Arsenal at home, that's two of the hardest fixes you're going to have all season.
00:20:17
Tom Crack - Ipswich
probably get six points now
00:20:18
Richard
Maybe, but if they get six points and have to burst a lung or whatever to get them, then that's all good for us, isn't it? I don't see Chris Wood at 33, despite him having the season of his life playing those three games in a week and and that kind of stuff, or even moregan Morgan Gibbs-White or anyone like that.
00:20:27
Tom Crack - Ipswich
yeah
00:20:37
Richard
So there's an opportunity there for sure. I know we've got our own fixtures as well, but you know Newcastle and Arsenal is is kind of as tough as it gets, I would say, and to a certain extent.
00:20:44
Tom Crack - Ipswich
They've probably got six points now.
00:20:47
Richard
So yeah, I'll go for a seven. Why not? The last time we were in the fifth round, it was Watford, wasn't it, in 2007.
00:20:53
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Yeah, one no, yeah.
00:20:54
Richard
And that was a missed opportunity, really.
00:20:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:20:56
Richard
It's got that it's that kind of draw, because I think Watford were a Premier League side at the time. like They were in and out, weren't they, for a like a decade. and it's got It's got that feeling to it. I mean, Forest, a better side, probably, than that Watford team that day.
00:21:09
Richard
But I just feel like they could take their eye off that a little bit. I don't think it will be a priority. So maybe we nick it. I'll go for seven.
00:21:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, interesting maybe we'll check the confidence levels again once we know who definitely goes through because I wonder what the difference in you both got have gone on the assumption of Forrest there, which is fair enough, but so you never know. might It might be down to Devon. We'll have to see how that game plays out. But certainly there's a little bit of room for confidence. And look, Forrest have had this run of games with those three teams before earlier in the season. And it's been their their worst run of the season.
00:21:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
said the reverse fixes of each of them. They got beat 3-0 by Arsenal, 3-0 by City and got done 3-1 at home by Newcastle. So they're fixtures that haven't served them very well the first time round this season but we will see.
00:21:53
Richard
There you go.
00:21:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I'm going to have a quick break now to hear from one of our sponsors and then we'll react into the rest of the draw as a whole and sort of dare we say plot in routes to the final and sort of who we could see coming through.

Excitement for FA Cup Fixture

00:22:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
and we are back now for the final part of today's show. And before we get into the full draw, I can't believe, just I've just remembered something when looking at dates again that I can't believe I've missed while we're chatting about the game, is that this, way the weekend this game is gonna fall. I'm away. i I'm away in Milan with some friends, one of whom is a Nottingham Forest fan. So that has a very that has got a very interesting set up if we can find somewhere in Italy showing the game, which I've just thought of.
00:23:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
There's three of us going. My mate's a town fan, one's a forest fan, so it's going to be a very interesting weekend around everything else. I can't believe I've only just realized that.
00:23:18
Tom Crack - Ipswich
You're going to have
00:23:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
but
00:23:20
Tom Crack - Ipswich
bit Bigger up, you're going to have Napoli the Inter. I know it's an away game, but that's a big game in Serie A. I'd be interested to be in Milan for that game, just atmosphere of a city-wise.
00:23:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:23:28
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Complete distraction there, but that's kind of a cool game to watch.
00:23:31
Richard
what about What about Exeter? we Are we just missing them completely? are we going any x Are you going with any Exeter fans?
00:23:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
No, I don't know any X7 fans, unfortunately. I only know one forest fan, really.
00:23:41
Richard
i know I know one.
00:23:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
He just happened to be one of my closest main yeah the Yeah, that'd be an interesting one.
00:23:42
Richard
I know one.
00:23:45
Global Sports Podcast Network
as I text him now.
00:23:46
Tom Crack - Ipswich
one One of my in-laws went to the Uni in Exeter, but that's about it for me.
00:23:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah So I take our text my mate when I saw the draw. He said then, now when I realized that, I'd say that it'd be quite funny if you lose now, wouldn't it? As soon as we got each other, as I was going to be nervous there. So it'd be quite funny if you just lose to X7 now. And it ruins it. because been eyeing up a cup draw against each other for years and as that finally happens when we're all out of the country, can't go, whatever happens, but oh well.
00:24:13
Richard
Look, it is not a foregone conclusion because it's going to be freezing cold in Exeter tonight.
00:24:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
No.
00:24:19
Richard
You know, Plymouth just did one over Liverpool. ah i could see I could see it happening.
00:24:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah. You never know, dear, but let's look at the rest of the draw then, because we spoke a lot about our game, but we also spoke yesterday about some of the teams that have gone out so far.
00:24:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
And when you look at the draw, there's potential for, well, as a guarantee, some very good Premier League team is going to go out because they've been drawn against each other. But there's some big opportunities for people to drop out here. So we've got Aston Villa against Cardiff, Manchester United at home to Fulham, obviously us against X to the Royal Forest, the winner of Doncaster Crystal Palace, which at time of recording, we don't know yet. Obviously you all know that by the time you're listening to this episode. They welcome Millwall.
00:25:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Newcastle have got Brighton at St James's. There's Bournemouth host Wolves. An all-championship tie between Preston and Burnley, which means they'll ah ah guarantee of a championship side being in the last eight. And then Plymouth's reward for beating Liverpool is a trip to the Etihad to take on Man

Premier League Teams in FA Cup

00:25:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
City. So so Plymouth going to City is a very interesting draw, but a fairly uninspiring draw of a lot of Premier League teams getting each other, but on that side, and for a neutral sort of setup, it looks quite a boring draw, doesn't it? But from a point of view of somebody who's still in there, you look at the teams that, again, who might be out, if you pick a result up, obviously, Forrest would be out if we were to make the quarters, obviously, in that state. One of United and Fulham gone, one of Newcastle and Brighton gone. If I say a villa, a villa's not a,
00:26:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Cardiff will' give up will be well up for that, a villa. Bournemouth and Wolves, one of them will go, and so you never know. Bournemouth have been going strong, but again, at the base where the league season comes in, similar to argument if it is Forrestal, we end up playing. There's a lot of potential there for, like I said, to know going into it that one of Newcastle and Brighton and one of the United and Fulham nailed on to go. It certainly makes for an interesting look at the draw, don't it?
00:26:29
Tom Crack - Ipswich
What's going on?
00:26:31
Richard
I don't know.
00:26:32
Richard
i you got You guys stopped it stopped moving. Are we still live? We're still live.
00:26:36
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Sorry Rachel, before it's you going, sorry.
00:26:36
Richard
and yeah No, no, sorry.
00:26:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
Just about got a horrible time and we froze right with my question.
00:26:39
Richard
it just
00:26:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
I asked the question and everyone froze.
00:26:43
Richard
It did, yeah.
00:26:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
We had no idea what was happening.
00:26:45
Tom Crack - Ipswich
yeah
00:26:47
Richard
Sorry. yeah no It does i mean is interesting in the sense of we're in it.
00:26:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
you take you take You take the answer first.
00:26:47
Tom Crack - Ipswich
please Complete shock. Complete shock.
00:26:54
Richard
I mean, we haven't been in it for so long. So actually just being in the last kind of you know or the fifth round or whatever is is just kind of exciting. But yeah, the draw itself, I agree with you. I suppose it is a little bit, you know, there's not a standout game particularly. Also, there's not a jeopardy kind of tie because a big club isn't going to a to a smaller club or a bit of a banana skin. So, you know, if if if Man City and were going to Plymouth, that'd be a much more interesting tie than the other way round. I mean, I'm sure they'll they'll have fun all piling up to Manchester for that game. But
00:27:27
Richard
You know, as we saw, I mean, they were lucky to get past Leighton Orient, really. I know they had lots of chances and stuff, but they were still a bit all over the place. they could have been two nil down at halftime in that game kind of easily. So yeah, it's it yeah, they annoy me a little bit as well.
00:27:41
Richard
Cause they always seem to get a fairly easy ride in the cup. They always get an easy draw. It's really, really irritating.
00:27:46
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Yeah.
00:27:48
Richard
and man United full, I mean, Fulham have got a good record there recently. Man United are appalling at home, aren't they? So you never never rule that out. Brighton Newcastle is a good one because I think it'd be interesting. This has got a whiff of the kind of Leicester season, Leicester City season about it, you know, a random winner a little bit. And it'd be lovely to see because it gets very boring when the big clubs pick them up all the time.
00:28:11
Richard
and So yeah, I'd like to see and Brighton put Newcastle out. That'd be quite nice to see them march on. Bournemouth, I think they deserve a really strong cup run as well because I think they've been probably my team of the season with the way that they've played and the fact that they've had so many injuries and just continue to play unbelievably effective football really watchable football as well. So it'd be nice to see them have a cup run as well and of course ourselves.

Potential Upsets & Silverware

00:28:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, exactly. What do you think, Tom? How's the draw shaped up in your eyes?
00:28:41
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Yeah, well, living in a Manchester for the past few years, one of the games that kind of stands out to me Lancashire-wise is Preston v Burnley. I know it's not a a or Premier League affair, but that for people from that part of the country, it's a big, big game for them. So that's kind of the luck of a draw in that sense of both sides as well. Good chance to go to the courses for one of those teams. That's one of the good things about this draw, I guess, isn't it, that one of those teams has managed to avoid a Premier League opposition. Obviously, from Plymouth's perspective, it's kind of nice to go against Premier League opposition, but and sometimes you want to avoid them because you kind of advance further and that's going to be the case on one of those two sides. That's a decent game to look at as well. Yeah, I'm
00:29:16
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Echo your point there, Richard, about Bournemouth as well. like yeah I think for me as well, the second you said it, they kind of dawned on me as well, you're right. I think they have been my team of the season as well, just the way Iriola's got them playing and you know they're kind of they do kind of float under the radar in terms of fandom sometimes and just the
00:29:32
Richard
And because of what forests have done, right, they kind of
00:29:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:29:34
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Yeah, yeah, very much so. Yeah. And it's like any other season, this would be, this would be like, you know, you kind of expect Brighton to fill this role each season, but they kind of flagged ever so slightly this year in Bournemouth have kind of jumped on it and they've been fantastic.
00:29:45
Tom Crack - Ipswich
that Those two young centre backs they've got are just like absolute Rolls-Royce players and so impressed.
00:29:47
Richard
Yeah. Hmm.
00:29:50
Tom Crack - Ipswich
And then Kirk has left back as well, so impressed when Those three and many other players money at Portland Road over season and just a great so yeah I think being rewarded for a cup run from their season in the cup would be great for them and there's a lot of teams like you said you got your Villa Newcastle Brighton Bournemouth one of those sides or two of those sides are going to be in the in the quarters and I think that's that's that's a good thing to see because It's a chance for them I think especially for the likes of the Brighton and Bournemouth who have been ran really really well in recent years Villa included obviously from almost going down of Gerrard to now being in the Champions League knockout round. Those three sides really like you'd like to think silverware could be in the future given the trajectory of how they've been and this is a great chance for them. So they I think obviously they want to consolidate wherever you are in the league and they've got other competitions as well like Newcastle, with the League Cup and Villa, of the Champions League as well. But
00:30:38
Tom Crack - Ipswich
this is a good chance for them. and city it We've had the Manchester Derby two is in a row now and no one wants to see that for a third time, do they? So if they play each other or Fulham do a job or Plymouth, but your Premier League side for the third round in a row would be fantastic, wouldn't it? Shame that it's not down south, like you said, Richard, because I think that would be a massive difference maker, but they've been in a Premier League side already away from home this season against Brentford, who had the best home record in the league, I think at one point as well. So they'll they'll try their best, won't they? But it's a shame, yeah, it's not.
00:31:06
Tom Crack - Ipswich
the same as other people had it this past weekend. But yeah, not many standout rounds, but hopefully we can see ourselves through to the cause.
00:31:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, that's the thing in it really, though, is that you always feel that there's a bit more higher chance of a cup set when the lower team's at home. And you look at the two games there, obviously, Cardiff go in the villa, Plymouth go in the city.
00:31:24
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Cup set.
00:31:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
If you swap down the other way around, they'd have been...
00:31:31
Tom Crack - Ipswich
I never heard cup set before, I love that.
00:31:32
Richard
I've never heard cupset before.
00:31:33
Tom Crack - Ipswich
o
00:31:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
I love to take credit for that.
00:31:34
Tom Crack - Ipswich
That's great.
00:31:35
Richard
I like it.
00:31:36
Tom Crack - Ipswich
No, no.
00:31:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought that was very common. I thought it was fairly common saying that
00:31:42
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Oh, brilliant.
00:31:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
We can claim I invented it for the podcast.
00:31:44
Richard
Cupset, yeah.
00:31:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
But say if you if if you flip those two games your way around, they look a lot more interesting going into it.
00:31:47
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Yeah, yeah.
00:31:47
Richard
Makes a lot of sense.
00:31:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
But look, obviously we could still have them because obviously if Exeter beat Forrest, then us going there would set it up that way around.
00:31:55
Tom Crack - Ipswich
Yeah.
00:32:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
And so if Doncaster have beaten Palace, which I say at the time of recording, and we don't know the game's been played now. If Doncaster win that and obviously them hosting Millwall there, would would certainly set it up as well. But we don't know how those fixtures play out. So we've been nice to see Cardiff be at home or Plymouth be at home. But overall, a fairly intriguing draw. So I feel like the people who are neutral in this now, if their team's gone out already, you probably look at that and say it's a rubbish draw. But for one of the 16 teams still left in it, it certainly looks a very interesting end to the FA Cup. But there's only so far we can look ahead, though, obviously, because
00:32:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've got a few big games in the Premier League to come up before we i before then and say we will dive back right back into the FA Cup in the build up to that game against whoever wins out of Exeter and Forest much nearer the time. But the rest of the focus this week is going back on the Premier League. We go to Villa Park at the weekend and we've got three more episodes this week where we can look ahead until we go to that trip. But that's the end for today. So from me, Richard and Tom, thank you very much for listening and we'll catch you later in the week.
