Speaker: All right, we're... As you can tell, the internet is working perfectly as we get on with another episode of the Ahana Packers Edition podcast. Today we are live streaming, doing our reactions to the cutdowns to the 53-man roster. Before I say anything else, Joe Stradamus has struck again. the Packers went and traded for one former Iowa Hawkeye, Caleb Johnson.
Speaker: ah move that, honestly, in a vacuum, was a good move that Joe and I have been talking about for about a month. And then when you consider what happened like five minutes after, it became an absolute stone cold no brainer. So... Joe, let's continue to give you your flowers, take your victory lap. How are we feeling about you getting RB4 slash RB3 slash RB2 correct?
Speaker: You know, depending on however you want to slice the onion on that one. There... I mean, early on there were rumors that... john Caleb Johnson wasn't going to fit the Pittsburgh a scheme under Mike McCarthy, which doesn't make sense because McCarthy does run a type of zone offense.
Speaker: um But, you know, with her with the uncertainty certainty of Marshawn Lloyd staying healthy, which we're hoping, not saying anything against it, we do hope Marshawn Lloyd can stay healthy.
Speaker: um Josh Jacobs and his whole whole situation, there was really nothing behind those two. And, you know, we we talked about it before with like Chris Brooks, you know, he's gonna give you the pass blockability, but he really didn't show us what he could do in in the run game period.
Speaker: Pierre Strong was probably your closest to be getting the the nod just because he had a little bit of ability. He's worked with Cam Akard before, and and so and he showed that he had that 68-yard kickoff return, that he he could be a returner if need be.
Speaker: So there were a bunch of question marks, and Caleb Johnson, obviously the homer side of me for the Hawkeyes really took over in a lot of it, but it just made sense that if the Packers were looking for a running back,
Speaker: And the Steelers were looking to get rid of a running back, and it sounded like they were not going to keep Caleb Johnson for anything. They drafted what they drafted to. They signed Rico Dowdle, who Mike McCarthy loves.
Speaker: And so the just the room wasn't there for him in Pittsburgh. And he's only a year removed from being a rookie, and they really didn't use him last year. But this is a guy that ah he was basically the Iowa offense for at least three years.
Speaker: And, you know, he's got the all, ah what what's the, In the college football version the All-Pro, it's All-American. All-American. You know, he's an All-American running back.
Speaker: ah I think his last year at Iowa, he had like 1,500 plus rushing yards. He can give you a little bit in the past game also.
Speaker: I think some guys have been looking and said he's not. And I think I said this when we talked running backs year – the draft that he doesn't give you a ton in pass blocking but he can be at least a roadblock for pass rushers and you know if if all else fails he also has a little bit of kickoff and punt oh very limited. He didn't do a lot of it, but he did do some at Iowa, especially early on. so
Speaker: I think what they came out and said, they gave up a 7th round 20-28 pick. Right. and they had like Or was it a 6th round? Because they traded for a 6th rounder and then they sent out a 6th rounder.
Speaker: Yeah, I'm a little off because... Excuse me. um redmond was acquired for a seventh round 2028 and i'm not sure if they had another one for johnson i'm trying to look for it but of course i'm not able to find it right now but um pretty sure it was they shipped out of 2028 uh of Butch McCollett, a 2028 six-round pick because they got one, which we'll talk about here in a minute on how they got that one, but they got one in return and they sent one out for Johnson, but it's supposed to be like the lesser of the... It's not the pick that we got from Miami, it's it's our action the Packers' actual
Speaker: It's a true North series question. Do the Dolphins coaches just watch tweets about Packer players or did they ever scout other teams? You know, to be honest, this is not unusual for guys who started at a different program as a head coach. They want to bring as many people with them as they can.
Speaker: And don't forget who his general manager is, like John Eric Sullivan is there too. So yeah, you you have the double you have the the double whammy there if you want to call it that. So yeah, no real surprise. and Johnson was the sixth round pick.
Speaker: Okay, and they both had looks at McCourt last year. We'll just go ahead and get into it. You know, the the Packers traded Kyle McCourt to Miami for... a 2028 six-round pick.
Speaker: And then, as Mike just said, Caleb Johnson went out, or is coming to Green Bay for a 2028 six-round pick, but it's not the same pick.
Speaker: Yeah, not no word on which one it is, so. But Kyle McCord, you know, Halfley and John Eric Sullivan, uh...
Speaker: had eyes on McCord both last year and then what they saw this year in the preseason. So I mean they know him and hopefully with Malik down there he's not going to see much playing time and unless need be anyway. So you know you might as well and they they shipped out Quinn Ewers to Jacksonville so they needed a backup quarterback.
Speaker: And, you know, what better one than one that you've seen that's young enough to make plays? And, you know, really, I wish they would ah and I predicted and it predicted it in our 53 that he would end up being the Packers' backup and it didn't happen. I still would have rather had him than Tyrod Taylor.
Speaker: And I don't think that one's over. um You know, ah what's it called? Levis is out there. There's going to be a few... um There's going to be a few guys who excuse me are going to be released and you know out in the wind, so to speak. and stuff so They're going to have options. I know some people are saying, like oh do they bring in Levis for the practice squad and stuff? Maybe, we'll see. um that He's got to clear waivers too.
Speaker: Kind of surprising, um Anthony Richardson is still on the Colts. um It looks like he made the 53. But um there's going to be guys out there who definitely have more upside than Taylor and could be around long. I mean, I get that they didn't think that they were going to get McCord through the waivers.
Speaker: So get what you can at them. But if it were me... I think it would have been easier to get Tyrod Taylor through waivers. So stash with the way the practice squads can be built now, stash him on the practice squad.
Speaker: You have McCord as your number two, and you have Tyrod in case something happens and you need to bring him up. Yep. So that i don't have anything really else on that. he with another team, you just say, okay, and find somebody else.
Speaker: I'm just going to put my hands in the air on that one because I don't know. Yeah, I honestly have no feel. You know, they they chose to go at at least for the moment with the the veteran presence.
Speaker: I don't think that's going to win you much of anything on the field. like
Speaker: You know, some people are say trying to say, like, you know, Taylor's, you know, poor performance in the preseason is due to who was around him. McCord was playing with worse players, and I get it, like, Taylor was still facing some first-team opposition and all that kind of stuff, but the ways Taylor was not playing well are the kinds that don't get better when you have better players around you. Like, he just looked like a guy who doesn't want contact, doesn't want to be hit in the pocket and stuff, and...
Speaker: Like, that doesn't come back with, oh, the starting O-line is out there. Especially when Green Bay's starting O-line is still in a level of flux and stuff. So, hey I say this, and, you know, this team isn't going anywhere without Jordan anyway. But if the whole idea is, like, to stay afloat if Jordan misses a game or two kind of thing...
Speaker: Honestly, don't think you're getting that from Tyrod. And, you know, you and I are on the same light we're on the same wavelength on that one. No, True North, if he's not going to take contact as a quarterback, he's not sticking his face in there as a guard. So, no, I do not believe.
Speaker: um I do not believe that's an option. but If anybody's watching and they got questions drop them in the comments and we'll get to them as we go through. Right now we'll talk about what we know but we're we're really waiting to see what happens when they finally announce the finalized roster. yeah Yeah, it should be coming out soon because I think they had to have it in by 6 The deadline has passed. Yeah. yeah So where do we want start? we want to stick with the quarterback room and just say, yeah, obviously Jordan Love and Tyrod Taylor right now? Yeah, let's just go and we'll kind of go position by position. I'm going to try to pull up as many of the running lists that I can find at this point just so that we have quicker reference. So you can kind of go off on the quarterback, continue on with the quarterback room.
Speaker: Yeah, so right now we know for sure it's Jordan Love. There's no ifs, ands, or buts about that one. That one's for sure. We're guessing it is going to be Tyrod. At least for now. had any At least for now, they've they've had no other corresponding moves at the quarterback position other than they traded Kyle Ward to Miami.
Speaker: So week one, I mean, there's no doubt in I shouldn't make anybody think that we were doubting anything, but Jordan Love is your starter for the foreseeable future.
Speaker: There's no if-ins, buts about it, so there's no issues there. Our issues are what's behind him just in case Jordan misses another game or this year like he has in the past. And that's where Tyrod Taylor was supposed to step in. But he had such a poor training camp and a poor preseason that... And I see so many people say, well, he's playing with backups and all that.
Speaker: Okay, and he should be making the backups... If he's that good, he should be making the backups look like Star. And it was more like the Stars making him... Or, I mean, the backups making him look good. And so it's just one of those things that...
Speaker: don't understand the thought process behind it. It's not like a Malik situation where you can keep him on roster for a couple of years and then when he goes side somewhere else, you get the pick or you trade him for whatever. as he's I believe he's in year 16, so nobody's looking to make him their franchise quarterback going forward.
Speaker: So it is what it is, but those as of right now, That's what we're seeing as the quarterback room. And obviously there will be another one picked up because they always like to try to get that third one on the practice squad. So when everything's finalized and then when waiver claims, or not waiver claims, but when practice squads start being formed, we'll probably see another one signed, whether it's a Levis or Hell, maybe they bring drones back or something. i don't know.
Speaker: So we are there. running back, it's going to be a very interesting conversation going forward. i know Wendell Ferreira is saying that nope they haven't officially announced the calle the Caleb Johnson trade, but they did announce the two other trades that were done today.
Speaker: So, we know because of the situation, josh Jacobs is on the commissioner's exempt. So that means until they decide to take him the off the commissioner's exempt list, he is not counting against the 53-man roster.
Speaker: i do believe and Mike you might correct me if I'm wrong but I do believe that they did release I Air Strong yep strong is released basically all three of the guys who are getting yeah the three guys who are getting the the bulk of the carries behind them are all gone so Nixon um strong and um Martinez have all been released at this point So right now, only ones on roster that are... I mean, Jacobs is still technically on the team. He's just not on the roster. He's not on the 53, yeah. So officially... So only ones are Marshawn and... Chris Brooks at this point, yeah. With Loy... Not with... Sorry. With Johnson all but confirmed. But, you know, until it's like officially, know, on the dotted line, we'll hold off on that. But we expect that to be written in there.
Speaker: Um... yeah Yeah, I keep scrolling and don't see anything other than Wendell's tweet about it. It hasn't been announced yet. Yeah, so there's still room to be made on that one.
Speaker: I still don't see Chris Brooks being, I mean, he's going to make the initial 53 right now, but I just, I don't see him being there for the whole sequel.
Speaker: through North, what do you, with the OL and RBs, they are going going to need to throw the ball so much that I worry the Love's arm might fall off.
Speaker: Yeah, but this is what everybody's been hoping for, that they can build the offense through Love. So, I mean, so be it, let his arm fall off, but this is what everybody's been hoping for. It's not a run-based system. They wanted it built out of Love.
Speaker: We'll get to this one here in a minute when we talk about tight end. Anything else you want to talk about running backs with? um no I think they're just gonna hope that they can get one of um one or two of Martinez Nixon or strong back on the practice squad um i need to reread the rules on the um eligibility I'm so like because they you do have the like four spots that are allowed for like vested veterans and shit like that so I need to reread how that works with the practice squad again Martinez and Nixon are definitely eligible
Speaker: I think Strong is still, but they'd have to designate him as one of the veteran spots. But I am still super confused on how that that mechanism works for the practice squad because they keep changing and adding rules to it.
Speaker: Right, because he's spent a lot of time on practice points. I don't know how much eligibility he And he is he is four years into his career. So like, like you know, the team, I know it's hard to trust the team, but the the like years in the the years tenured, um those are pretty like good to follow on the team site. So Strong is listed as a fourth year player at this point.
Speaker: Alright, so do we want to head on to tight ends now so we can have our true's other point here? Yeah, we'll just hop to tight end and we'll come back to receiver afterward. Yeah, so... Because that's going to be the most... the...
Speaker: drama-filled one is wide receiver. So tight ends, really, what we do know is the... Tucker Craft... Should be ready week one. They haven't made any other designations so far, you know, as a, as, you know, maybe an IRDTR, but so it looks like he's a full go for week one.
Speaker: Um, they did make a trade with the Rams, which I'm assuming is because they didn't assume that this guy is going to make it through waivers because he was a, uh,
Speaker: practice squatter last year and they really didn't have room for them this year. The Rams didn't have room for them this year, but oh Mark Redman, tight end,
Speaker: You know much about him. i don't He's never really popped up on my regular. So he's a wide type inline tight end. He's a 6'6", 260 guy, 260 plus guy. um Not very fast, um but ah you can see the blocking ability on his film snaps. um What's his face? um Mike Tice's son, Nate Tice. Nate Tice has a thread of him. He's one of Tice's unsung Haas player, Haas list guys for the offseason. So good to see there.
Speaker: That's been something that, you know, they signed John Woo Smith. They have Musgrave still with the ability to potentially bring him back if the neck thing works itself out. But really it's Tucker and who else in terms of blocking ability on this team from the from the tight end position.
Speaker: with With the acquisit- the signing of Smith and the acquisition of Redmond, I do not believe Wiley is going to make this this roster at this point. Like he just did not do nearly enough to prove himself worthy of a 53-man spot. If anything, he hurt his chances to make it. So I think that they're going to be um just three deep at the position and we're going to see what's ah what's up with that.
Speaker: Right. So right now we're looking at mainly Tucker, Janu, and Mark Redman. Musgrave is most likely going to end up on the IR but I think it's one of those things that he has to make the initial 53 before because he wasn't on PUP or anything like that.
Speaker: Oh no he was on No they did have him on PUP. yeah Yeah I think people are just kind of freaking out because like they've announced that Micah got moved to the PUP reserve list which is a formality kind of thing.
Speaker: I'm pretty sure Musgrave is going... i Basically, um so the only two decisions of the four guys on PUP were Micah, Musgrave, Jordan Riley, and Orzic.
Speaker: Micah got put on the PUP reserve, which is what you have to do to... It's just the it's it's a nomenclature kind of thing. so He stays on PUP instead of going on IR or being released with a settlement.
Speaker: Orzic got... activated we'll talk about that later Riley and Musgrave we haven't heard any updates on but based on how both have been talked about you know Riley with more optimism than Musgrave at this point but expect both guys to end up on that pup reserve lift that list that Micah is on where You know when they're ready they'll be eligible to be activated for their 21 day practice window and all that good stuff. So it's a formality thing. He's not going on IR yet. There's no need or reason for the Packers to. So.
Speaker: ah so yeah it's it's just the um it's just the timing and a numbers thing so um what's it the packers are gonna roll into 2026 season with parsons riley and musgrave on the puck reserve list unless anything changes miraculously in the next 24 hours yeah so i mean the Talk about a revamped tight end room. I mean, this was something we talked about early on in the preseason that, you know, this tight end room is really, really lacking.
Speaker: And they went out, they signed Janu, who, what, it's been eight years since he's worked with Matt LaFleur in Tennessee. They make the trade for Redman.
Speaker: I do agree Wiley's probably off the 53, but if they can get him, they probably can get him back from the practice squad just in case something doesn't go right with Tucker's recovery or, you know, they really didn't give up much for Redmond, so if he doesn't,
Speaker: do what they think he can then you know they can at least go back to the Wiley well so i hope that kind of in terms of in terms of impact from what they're looking for from Redmond you're basically looking to get whatever you got from Fitzpatrick and but maybe better blocking like that's it and so you know if you're looking for in terms of like what the numbers look like or whatever snaps played type of snaps played just put Redmond in the spot where spots where Fitzpatrick was playing last season, and that's basically it. You're not doing that with Janu. So they're not the same player, but it's funny. I see people saying like, oh, Janu's going to take the Musgraves role.
Speaker: The irony is, is that the stuff Janu is good at as a receiver. Huh? No. The stuff Jonu is good at as a receiver is the stuff Tucker is at good at actually as a receiver too, where it's like finding holes in zones, getting racked, um you know breaking some tackles after the catch and stuff like that. So they're kind of similar, but in a way it's good because...
Speaker: Instead of making Tucker have to turn like every five yard catch into a 15 yard catch, it's like, all right, like John, you can try and do that. And Tucker, you can try to increase like the depth of his routes a little bit and stuff. So they'll be able to do some creative things with that. And then the big one is that I was hoping they would get someone like Redman where, you know, maybe a slightly better name, you know, bigger name, but... You're you're just looking for someone who can eat up those inline blocking snaps for um for for Tucker to free him up for downfield reps and you know where he can work as the off you know the detached tight end or he can be the motion tight end or whatever. so um you know This is the role that Ben Sims had a couple seasons ago that they were trying to hope Fitzpatrick would fall into last season. so um
Speaker: Yeah, just good to see that they got a body. And like you said, it's ah it's a super minimal cost for a not even this year's 2028 pick. I believe it's 2028's seventh round pick. So yeah, it's it's down the road kind of thing. So yeah, just whatever. One note. And so not to say that he's going to be a superstar, but he Redmond did show a little bit with Ty Simpson in the preseason. I mean, it wasn't like over the top or anything, but he did have a pretty good...
Speaker: yeah rams <unk> He's gonna give you a little bit but he's not gonna unless all of a sudden everything clicks and You know, this is like a Ryan Grant type situation where you spend the bare minimum over for a player and then he comes comes your next Superstar in the room, you know, I wouldn't expect a ton out of him But he's gonna give you just enough support Especially over what the Packers already had Yeah, just an improvement on what you know he's a improvement on what Dabney was giving you. And like I said, Wiley was just such a disappointment. Honestly, between the two, I think they might honestly keep Dabney over Wiley just because Wiley just didn't do anything. Like, he was tight end one by default. Like, purely, simply by default. And even with that, I honestly thought he had a disappointing training camp. But we won't burn too much of the midnight oil on that one.

Speaker: yeah no one's <unk> We're at that point in the vortex where the Packers aren't updating anything and none of the beat reporters are getting anything out and we're like 10 guys short of the final roster count. According to Andy Herman, Dabney was released.

Speaker: So and for whatever it's worth. So, you know, the Packers haven't officially announced it, but the Steelers released their 53 man roster announcement. Article, whatever you want to call it.
Speaker: And they note the trade of Johnson to Green Bay in their four Green Bay's sixth round picks. So take that however you want to. But I believe that that signifies that for all intents and purposes. Yeah, I. This is more a function of the Packers are always late on it. You know, Basara and I, we joke all every week how late are they going to release the injury report. know It's supposed to come out 4 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday. And Basara and I are always joking cracking jokes about, all right, is it going to be 4 a.m. tomorrow? Is it going to be 4 p.m. on Friday? Like, what are would we working with? And anytime it comes out within the first half hour, you know, we sing hallelujah and rejoice. So...

Speaker: Your running backs are Chris Brooks, Marshawn Lloyd, and acquired via trade with Pittsburgh, Caleb Johnson. Exempt list is Josh Jacobs, released, Air Strong, Damian Martinez, Aiden Nick.
Speaker: Wide receivers are Christian Watson, Jaden Reed, Matthew Golden, Sky Moore, Boat Mountain, and J. Michael Sturtevant. They IRDTRed, Savion Williams, Larry Racy, Isaiah Nayer, Will Shepard, Caden Fraylor, Eshawn Johnson, Chris Hill. Your tight ends are... Oh my god!
Speaker: Oh no, they kept him. Never mind. Keep going. Sorry. Okay, okay, okay. Stop that. This is freaking news. Your tight ends are Dr. Kraft, Jonu Smith, Josh Wiley, and Mark Redman. They released Dabney and Messiah Swenson. They also wave injured McAllen Castles and Thomas Yasmin.
Speaker: I imagine Yasmin will probably end up, well, no, wave injured.
Speaker: We'll see. We'll wait a little bit. Yeah. of oh i think our yeah Just go for it. I think he's just going to revert to the IPP, but we'll see. We'll cross that bridge when we get to it.
Speaker: Yeah, but they wave injured him. They didn't just wave him. yeah that that could have been waived with an injury settlement. And if that's the case, then he can't be back for a while.
Speaker: Yeah. So your offensive linemen, Dak Bakobuwele, Aaron Banks, John Ryan, Jordan Morgan, Anthony Belton, Jacob Monk, Jagger Burton, John Williams, Donovan Jennings, Travis Glover.
Speaker: They released Darian Kennard, Graham Banks, Dalton Cooper, Josh Getzke, Dylan Barrett, and Dylan Wade. So the only real surprise on that one is they kept Jennings over Kennard. Kennard, was wrong him.
Speaker: and they And they kept ja a Travis Glover, which isn't surprising because when I talked to him during preseason, he said, I'm going to play wherever they put me. So he was more than open to be at as the any man guy. So that's what really the Packers are wanting.
Speaker: Your edge rusher. They only have four on roster. Lucas Van Es, Baron Sorrell, Brenton Cox Jr., and Danai Dennis Becker. They...
Speaker: On the Pup list is Mike Parsons, IRDTR is Colin Oliver. They released Aaron Mosby, Nigel Kelly, and Arden Walker, which Walker wasn't a surprise because of how late he joined the roster.
Speaker: Defensive linemen, you have Montee Wyatt, Carl Brooks, Vaughn Hargrave, Chris McClellan, Warren Brinson, Jonathan Ford, and Anthony Campbell.
Speaker: They released Nazir Stackhouse and Aiden Framedy. So basically they replaced Stackhouse with Campbell. I imagine Stackhouse has got to be back on practice squad, but they kept him around all at last year. can't see that him not being back on, unless somebody picked him Tough list is Jordan Riley, which who knows whenever he'll be back with the injury he had.
Speaker: Linebackers. Zaire Franklin, who we'll talk about in minute. Amazing about Zaire Franklin. Edron Cooper, Isaiah McDuffie, Tyron Hopper, and Nick Neiman.
Speaker: He released Christian Welch TJ Quinn. I imagine Welch is gone, gone, because i don't think he's got any eligibility left for practice squad. TJ Quinn probably will be back the practice squad.
Speaker: Cornerback. Eshawn Nixon, Carrington Palentine, Benjamin Sting-Cuse, Brandon Cite and Jamal Haddon. They released Damani Jackson, Jalen Simpson, Barb Bartholomew, and M.J. Devanshire Jr. The only real shock there is Damani Jackson. I'm hoping they bring him on the practice squad.
Speaker: Safeties.
Speaker: Xavier McKinney, Evan Williams, Patan Bollard, and Patan Alodapo, which again is not much of surprise there. I know Mark Perry played really well during the preseason, but Patan probably has more upside. but They released Perry and Mervion Kenyon. They've injured Jadine III.
Speaker: Then for special teams, of course you got the Celtic Cannon and Daniel Whelan, Trace Smag, and the returning Matt Orsak.
Speaker: They released Al Adamaitre. So... of
Speaker: for noting. So that, everybody, is your official 53-man roster as of right
Speaker: now. Now, I fully bring people to come at me on this shit. Why do you think I went after Sky Moore so hard, which I still do not believe Sky Moore is going to be on this roster in the whole year?
Speaker: he's lucky he made the 53. i i really have no clue what they see inside more over guys like will shepherd by or pierre strong so i will fight people to the men i will literally fight somebody to have to um well i can't agree with this he's let me tell me they really sold you got brandon i mean he's rookie this year he's probably seen one so But if the rumors are true then there are people still hunting around sniffing for Harrington and that's the case.
Speaker: We could still have some moves and this doesn't include any waiver wires. They still have up until what 6 p.m. tomorrow to claim. Yeah it's a 24 hour waiver cleaning period so you'll get those announcements 601 tomorrow basically well i always forget how long it takes them to run through the calculations of like the the you know because it's it's based on placement of the draft order because of how bad the team was the previous year but you know they'll go through the whole waiver wire and then you know all the guys who get claimed they'll have to to do the calculations the not calculations but they'll have to do the placements on which team is awarded said player and stuff and so you know expect that
Speaker: At latest by 7 p.m. Eastern tomorrow, um you know, they'll they'll announce the waiver claims. Expect Green Bay to sniff around a quarterback. um They're good at tight end now.
Speaker: Corner and quarterback, potentially O-line. one of the big names out there. There's name that they've been linked to in trades that was released today, Evan Neal from the Giant. And even Essa Pohl, who I like better as a tackle prospect. But yeah, Neal is another one.
Speaker: but We'll i know he we talk about it I know you and Moppy's love of Pohl. I know that they were linked to Neil and multiple. The Neil one, I'm kind of like, I'm curious because i don't know how his attitude will change about where he plays on the O-line after he's been cut by the Giants. Because I know he really wanted to make it work at tackle for a while. But it's like, okay, like, your first team gave up on you there. are you going to move now? Kind of thing. So, yeah, we'll see how that plays out.
Speaker: um But... Yeah, we have the full roster. But I can't see them going into the season or going very far with just the four guys on the roster. I know they're going to get Micah back at some point. But...
Speaker: Given that so week six is the optimistic return and I know some people are kind of like Trying to over parse one person sin. Yeah, he's out a minimum of a month um It's very hard to roll and I know that they could call up Mosby if he gets back on the practice squad and all that kind of stuff but He's there to play special teams like he gives you nothing as an edge rusher so um we'll see it just feels and especially and and then i also add in four guys is light especially when two of them lucas and deny are guys who work a lot on the interior in the past rest packages so you also add that into the like file away for later discussion um so that's the elephant in the room everyone wants to know like you know what does the final roster look like
Speaker: Because, like I said, we were just discussing, I didn't think Wiley deserved to make the final roster. The... the I'm not surprised they hung onto 7D tackles, especially because so the IRDR mechanism that I've been kind of like stomping the table for as a way to like, not cheat, but to kind of get around the numbers game of final countdown is, and I hate that they had to do it, but you had two guys in Savion, well, three really, if you want to, because Savion, Collin,
Speaker: ...offered injuries in like the week two preseason game window where it's like those injuries might take a little longer to come back from kind of thing. And so the way that the IR designate to return rules work are, so the standard...
Speaker: normal way is you keep the guy on your 53 man roster you put him on IR the the moment the clock tolls 6 0 1 p.m. you know they're on the finalized 53 man roster then you can put them on IR and they can be on IR as long as they need to be and then once they're ready to start practicing you can designate them to return you open up their 21 day window and you know you bring them back to the active roster the mechanism that the Packers used on Savion and um
Speaker: and colin oliver what it is is you're putting these guys on ir already and it's due to an injury that you're like he is going to be ready to come back within four weeks basically because instead of being allowed you know from week week one to week whatever for to open their 21 day practice window you're saying This guy, we need him on IR, but we want him back.
Speaker: And the um the way the league is um litigating it is, You have 21 days from the moment that week four turns over to week five to activate this guy onto your roster. If not, he goes on season-ending IR. You've used one of your 10 designations to return. and um Or eight.
Speaker: I forget what they've upped the number to at this point. They keep bringing the number up. And then you have like a couple additional a few additional ones for the playoffs. but So... This way, it buys the Packers anywhere from four to seven weeks to get two more guys on the roster in place of spots like Savion's and Oliver's.
Speaker: um So in Savion's case, this was an absolute boon for J. Michael Sturtevant. Not saying that Sturtevant couldn't have beaten out Savion regardless, but... This is one of those once Savion did get designated IRDR Sturdivant who was in the driver's seat for the like seventh wide receiver spot. He gets the um he hit the sixth wide receiver spot.
Speaker: It'll be interesting to see if he's active on game day. You know, that's the thing too is like you get down to this 53-man roster and you got to remember every game day you got to deactivate seven guys every week to play the game. So, um...
Speaker: There's going to be more guys who aren't up every game in the season, but congratulations to Sturtevant. He continues the um undrafted free agents. What's it called? The the streak of undrafted free agents making the opening day roster.
Speaker: And... um You know, with Savion and Oliver, you hope that they're able to return later on this season. And then the last one that stuck out to me is, kind of shocked they kept 10 old linemen.
Speaker: I didn't think there were 10 old linemen worthy of being kept on this opening roster. The one that I do commend them for doing is just moving on from Darian Kennard. Kennard was such a disappointment.
Speaker: Just based on how he was written about, how he was talked about by the coaching staff, and then their actions of, like, he didn't get an offensive tackle snap in training camp after the first week of training camp. Like, forget the preseason games. He got injured playing guard. So, um just the fact that they... Makes me wonder if he's not fully...
Speaker: Could be the case, but like he was playing poorly before he got injured. So, you know, to each their own. I know he wasn't signed for that much, but it's another you know sign that maybe Goud is learning from mistakes and not going to let stuff fester. that for The top eight guys, and I'm kind of curious how they listed the the guys who made the roster because it's not alphabetical order. It's not necessarily death chart oriented, but whatever it is, you know, your starting O-line is going to be Bakabu LA.
Speaker: Monk, Ryan, um I guess Banks until his knee flares up, and then Jordan Morgan at left tackle. And then your top reserves are going to be Burton, Williams, and then Belton.
Speaker: And then floating in that 9 and 10 spot are Donovan Jennings and Travis Glover, who... Glover's the one that surprises me, but
Speaker: I don't know like I I just don't know how to feel about Glover making the spot the roster I guess there really isn't anyone to parse over who I would have kept instead maybe Nigelique because you know like another edge rusher because you know that you're putting Oliver on IR but was just I'm honestly surprised they kept 10 alignment I didn't think 10 were really worthy of making the final roster Unless there's an issue with one of them with injuries that they're going to end up on IRDTR or they're not fully sold on Paco Buwele yet, but they're not going to put him

Speaker: I'm gonna I will die on that. He does not give you any more than anybody else on all that. We're on the roster. And I mean, even Keyshawn Johnson was being better than him towards the end of season.
Speaker: I'm hoping Will Shepard on at least practice squad, but there's a good shot that somebody picked him up waiver wire. um I guess Donovan Jennings, because he really hasn't been showing out.
Speaker: I figured it was either going to be Dylan Wade or they weren't going to keep Kennard.
Speaker: I do think there's a move that edge. I just, i'm i went away from Josh Swett. I have a feeling the Cardinals are still asking for this high draft pick. And so the Packers are like, okay, well, you're not budging. We're moving on to somewhere else.
Speaker: So I do see them going elsewhere. Other than that,
Speaker: Domani Jackson, I do think that they're going to try hoping that they can flip him through to the practice squad, but it it's really off.
Speaker: It really goes against what Woodykins usually does. He doesn't usually cut paint with his draft picks. right off the bat. I mean, he has in the past, like Jonathan Ford and Brandon Boz and guys like that.
Speaker: But, you know, normally he tries call his draft pick, especially from that year. Um... So that one that one kind of off the pad.
Speaker: And then of course the Adamidus over Orsek. Orsek hasn't played all three seasons. Smack has done wonderfully in games with Adamidus.
Speaker: Adamidus, still don't know how we can use the last game. With as well as he was, that that whole procedure was running and it's kind of weird that week one you're gonna completely change it now.
Speaker: So other than that, and then the tie rod thing, I know I've went on my ramps with that already. Those are really the only big surprise. Other than them making as many trades as well. You know, I think as Wendell Ferreira said, it's kind of shocking.
Speaker: This is definitely not a Ted Thompson run anymore because they had three trades today. I'm happy for Caleb Johnson. I'm happy he's getting a fresh start. I'm happiest with the Green Bay.
Speaker: you know i Like I said, he was Iowa's offense for at least two years, so you know I look forward to that. um I do think that he will give something, because he's not as easy to take down. He does play well in contact, and that's something that is going to be a bit missed with Josh Jacobs.
Speaker: Packers always need more Hawkeyes on the team. Like, and you know, everyone's going to have their take on, um... yeah yeah Oh boy.
Speaker: We'll take your word for it, True North. Audio ah do you only. True North says, I think that there's a good chance that Mark Perry will get picked up by Burger King. His mom knows the energy. Now, I will say this, I do think Mark Perry, unless he is playing, will be on the practice squad.
Speaker: He showed some upside. He showed some pretty decent upside in the preseason. Yeah. Right. And if there's any kind of injury or down, if Catan, basically Catan's on the hot seat.
Speaker: If he steps in and does absolutely nothing, he'll be gone and Perry will be right brought right back up. Yeah, you know, some people are, I know there's some people who are like wringing their hands over or scratching their head, but Keitan's the better special teams player and he is still the better deep safety. Like, I think they were trying to see if they can get more value out of him by having him be a more versatile player. And he's just not a slot defender. um You know what, if Perry comes back on the practice squad, maybe Perry will start working as a nickel, a backup nickel and stuff. They still need to figure out what they're going to do with tight ends in this defense. And I've seen some people say like, oh you know, Edge was the better was a really good cover against tight ends.
Speaker: That's great, but I don't want Edge in coverage a lot. like That's the thing is like... um I want him threatening to blitz on you know third and passing downs kind of thing and stuff so I I you I know you can't blitz him every play and I know that you know he had he was useful in coverage last season but I don't like that your primary tight end coverage guy is also a guy you want to be able to blitz at will so I still think they need to figure out something for covering tight ends which has been a
Speaker: age old, ah a tale as old as time for this Packers, div even the year they won the Super Bowl, it was like, oh, like, what are they doing with tight ends? It was kind of like a cross your fingers and turn away from the TV kind of thing. But um Perry's definitely a guy that I hope they can slip through waivers. Domani um is another one.
Speaker: Welch, honestly, just to get him on the practice squad so that, you know, if you need, you know, Neiman has had trouble staying healthy in his career. We'll see. We don't know how much more eligibility he has or what the rules are for him. He's spent a lot of time on the practice. Yeah, got to reread those and I'll try and get that together. um of the old linemen, Wade, maybe Geske, they need to pick up some like tackle prospects though for the practice squad because the ones they had this offseason were not too hot.
Speaker: um Basically any of the running backs, obviously with the receivers, you'd like Nair and Shepard back. And if they can get Prather back, excuse me. Prater's a guy where, you know he came from um Maryland's offense and stuff, but he has some nice film as the independent ex-receiver, the role that Golden is playing right now. So, you know, if they can get him to stick around and kind of learn the ropes and stuff, that would be a good guy to retain on that side of the ball. The Bills released i my pre-draft crush, so I might be leaning towards that. Max Komczak.
Speaker: Oh! but And here you go, they released Geno Stone too. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, I saw that. And I know people have been clamoring for Geno Stone for a bit.
Speaker: So that would be an interesting pick up. But yeah, here's here's the thing. We as Packer fans and even some as, as and I'll get to True North here in a minute, we as Packer fans and then a lot of content creators, we all like to say, oh man, i wish we could get these through the waiver wire. 99% of these guys are going to get through the waiver wire.
Speaker: It's whether or not the Packers want to bring them back or not. There's not a lot of undrafted free agents that you know waiver claims. So while there will be some, there's not going to be a lot. So a lot of these guys probably will make it straight through waivers. And because I mean, it's it's been the thing for years.
Speaker: the Everybody's all, well, this guy's not going to make it through waivers. This guy's not going to make it through waivers. Ends up making it through waivers and we have no issues. 95% of the time they're making it through waivers. like So yes, most of these guys are probably going to make it through waivers. It's just whether or not the Packers saw enough in them to want them on the practice squad.
Speaker: And so we'll see what happens. But now guys like Will Shepard, I think he's shown enough the last two years that... There could be a good shot. He's not back with the Packers, whether it's a waiver claim or he just says, no, I'm going to pry my hands somewhere else. Yeah, Sturdivant is ahead of me too kind of thing. yep Yeah.
Speaker: um But to True North, how many kickers will be on the practice squad, international players? They're going to sign a kicker to the practice squad. There's no doubts about it. It's just who are they going to sign to the practice squad.
Speaker: I think they like Yasmin, but again, they wave injured Yasmin. I have no clue how that works when it comes to the international player path. I don't know if it's similar it's if they wave injure somebody else where they can't, you know, bring him back.
Speaker: Or if the wave injured and nobody claims him, does he revert to IR?
Speaker: Yeah, not sure how the IPP rules work, so we'll see. They're probably going to... But the Packers take full advantage of the IPP. Yeah, they do. They'll probably have a kicker on the practice squad purely because since COVID they have carried one. So, like, they like... Especially with a rookie.
Speaker: Yeah. So... It'll be interesting to see who that kicker is, but we'll wait and find out in the coming days. But I do expect him to have one.

So, you know, um a month or two ago, I would have wished he was on the Packers, but the Packers got way much more defensive line depth than I figured they would have at this point. So, um...

It's all the numbers game in the NFL and you just, all these guys are just trying to find the right team to fit into. know, that's the thing is like, you go from a college environment where you get recruited into a, you know, by a coaching staff because they all think you're the perfect fit for their scheme.
Speaker: And then the NFL, it's like they change coaches so often. It's like you might be in the perfect scheme fit for a year and then it's gone by the time you like really get your head on straight and stuff.
Speaker: um You know, that's one of the things that we keep talking about with Lucas is like it's not his fault that he's had to play four different positions in three seasons kind of thing. So, um you know, every team is going to have their hits and misses and so be it.
Speaker: This one it is a surprise but isn't surprise. Giants released Jalen Hyatt. um That's kind of what happens when you have no route tree but you have massive people. So the one I'll put on that is like just...
Speaker: put up put a Put a whatever you want to call it, earmark, notch against. um Tennessee wide receivers, um what's his face what's the darn coat, the former Oklahoma quarterback, i can't think of his name right now. His scheme is so freaking weird where the receivers are like,
Speaker: not Yeah, Hypo. Yeah, Josh Hypo. His scheme is so freaking weird where like on all 22 you can barely see the receivers because they're so wide and they run not professional routes. um Like they're they're just you're creating space like you know how it was always talked about like um McCarthy would stretch the field horizontally with formations and all that kind of stuff. Heipel takes it to the one billionth degree on that and goes to the uber extreme and it you know it creates a really effective offense in college.
Speaker: But when you get to the pros, no one lines up where his receivers line up. And it just you just don't see those guys translate at all to the NFL very well.
Speaker: Because what was the other one? Cedric Tillman, the Browns released him. Last year, I think. No, they did this year. oh was this Oh, he made it to this year, okay.

Speaker: um You know... We won't do it weekly, but whenever there are big updates in the Jacobs situation, we will you know we will we will spend some time on it. But as of right now, he's on the um commissioner's exemption list.
Speaker: It's interesting because generally they don't do stuff like that without there being conviction. So it does raise the question, does the league have the video and are they already making measures, taking measures with regards to what the video looks like?
Speaker: That remains to be seen. um But other than that, um yeah, i don't I don't think there's anything that really stands out as needing to be addressed at this point. We've laid out who's made the roster, given our thoughts on some of our personal surprises. But otherwise, unless there's anything that's sticking out to you, I'm good to go on this one.

Speaker: keep working hard, don't let up now. Those that didn't make a run. Let's just say I put this out there when I made our 52-man predictions. I know some of these guys had bad preseason stuff like that, but let's not pile on them right now.
Speaker: It would be like if you got fired from your job and somebody showed up and started heckling you over it. You know, so kind of give these guys a little bit of a break. give them a little bit of time. that didn't make it an NFL roster right now, keep working because you got 24 hours and that can decide if you're on a practice spot or not and that can work.
Speaker: But we have seen in the past where guys were picked up off the street. Sam Congato comes to mind all the time. Picked up off the street was really a nobody and came in for a year or two and kept the Packers running game alive. so You can have moments like this. Keep your head up and keep working.
