Hello, Podwalkers, and welcome to another episode of the Goblin Lore Podcast. We are back to talk story and and talk about Goblin Lore a little bit and talk about pride and other things. Well, I think it's just those three things. But um why don't i introduce myself and then we can we can all introduce.
00:00:25
Speaker
Oh, wow. ah Sorry, I'm already off the rails, so distracting myself. So I'm Alex found on Discord in the Goblin Lord Discord. My pronouns are he, him. We have an opening question, but why don't you introduce yourself to him?
00:00:38
Speaker
Hi, I'm Taya. Pronouns are she, her, they, them. You find me at TayaTranscends on Blue Sky and on the Discord.

June Pride Promo Event

00:00:47
Speaker
And our question tonight is related to some news that was announced today of the the um June Pride promo that was just released. ah They're doing an event again like they did last year where they're going to do Commander Weekends in stores um where you can have any two characters... or two cards as your ah partner commanders.
00:01:09
Speaker
ah And the promo is a Gilded Lotus with Nissa and Chandra on it with some really spectacular art ah by Merlin GG.
00:01:23
Speaker
Just a sweet looking card. oh It's super gorgeous. Yeah, I mentioned ah on Blue Sky that this will be another one, another promo that I really like, that'll go in my binder of cards I really like. it It'll never play because I just don't put Gilded Lotus in decks anymore.
00:01:42
Speaker
Same thing with the Niko Chromatic Lantern from last year. they They keep printing these on high mana value ah rocks that only really get played in the most casual decks, it seems, because just dropping your five mana mana rock to have it blown up is just a complete blowout.

Deck Building and Trans Representation

00:02:05
Speaker
complete blowout i hope the look I think I might still have a Gilded Lotus in my Kozilek deck, but that's because my Kozilek deck has 25 mana rocks.
00:02:16
Speaker
Yeah, and you have spells that cost 12 mana to cast. Yes, exactly. But... but um Yeah, ah so um last year i um took my Felithar deck and added Alesha to it and only one other red card and some red producing lands, so I didn't make much change to the man of ah the rest of the deck.
00:02:43
Speaker
um So I had the two trans girls from ah Tarkir teamed up together, and ah they were a disgusting combination.
00:02:54
Speaker
um Olesha can bring back almost anything in the Felathar deck from the graveyard, and Felathar makes it big and attacky.
00:03:07
Speaker
Yeah. So that they worked out very well together, um not surprisingly, and shows why they don't have partner right now.
00:03:18
Speaker
Yep. not really sticking with the pride theme, although it will have some pride in it because one, I'm going to take my K&T deck, ah which has the ah big gay couple on the front of it, and I'm going to add Mrs. Bumbleflower as a second commander to it this year.
00:03:38
Speaker
So it's going to be the two gay guys and their giant put pet bunny. Nice.
00:03:46
Speaker
ah that willll be That's my plan for this year. ah they do play They'll play well together. um i won't have to make any changes to the deck to support Miss Bumbleflower. ah i just have to decide what to cut to put her in. She should be in the deck anyways. I just i just haven't added her because I have no idea what to cut from that deck at this point.
00:04:05
Speaker
and So this would just be a good reason to sit down and make that change finally. That's that's good. Yeah, I um i probably, i don't know that I'll be i'll be playing, but my my thought for this, and I had some other half-baked idea from years ago, and I can only remember half of it. um So I'm not going to try to go through that one. the The other idea I came up with, and this is not pride at all. This is just me on my silly nonsense.

Creative Deck Ideas

00:04:36
Speaker
A deck that I've been noodling on for
00:04:42
Speaker
years and years, probably over a decade at this point in time. And and with the ability to just secure a second creature as a as a commander, um I could just like make this deck work the way I want it to work. um I've been wanting to build a Zedru deck for a long time um and partnering with Kiki Jiki.
00:05:06
Speaker
And the fact that Kiki Jiki's tokens, because of the way Kiki Jiki works, it instructs you to sacrifice the tokens.
00:05:18
Speaker
If I give them to someone else, I cannot sacrifice them. And those tokens become permanent. Interesting. I did not realize that. Yes. And so that is a thing I've been trying to build for. all And there's a handful of copy effects like Kiki Cheeky that have that templating.
00:05:38
Speaker
most of them don't. Nowadays, the token itself has the instructions to sacrifice it. So so it says it says you sacrifice it at the end of turn is what it is.
00:05:49
Speaker
Yeah. And so, but because of because Kiki Jiki on the card, like the token doesn't have the text to the taxes on Kiki Jiki himself, you can like hack the system.
00:06:02
Speaker
And so that is a deck, like that is an inner, that's not even a deck idea. That's an interaction that I want to build a tech around. And I've been, I've been trying to figure out. And then there was like, um they, there then there's the whole thing with like the hunted creatures and that's, changed how that works so that doesn't work anymore oh right where these are creatures and there's a few other things that do this but the hunted creatures ah it's a cycle from the original rafika block that's the easiest to to explain when they come into play you um an opponent gets some number of of tokens like hunter dragon your opponent gets i think two to two knights
00:06:41
Speaker
The, yeah, three tutu knights with First Strike. But so they're they've changed the rules of how these types of cards work a few times. And so a long, long time ago, the person who creates the, to the person who gets the tokens is the one who owns them. Then for a little while, the person who owns the card that created them owns the tokens. And during that time period, they would count for Zedruh.
00:07:08
Speaker
Now they have changed that again. so then they don't count for Zedru anymore because like, now I think there's a, this is, I just pulled up Hunt a Dragon on, on Scryfall and there's a, I'd say recent reprint, but this is 2018 that even says target opponent creates to, to very specifically say that it's not the,
00:07:28
Speaker
person who owns this printed card it's the person who gets the token so those no longer count for Zedru and so anyway this this is a deck I've been trying to figure out what I want to do with it like try to figure out what the list would even look like and what I'm doing other than I think it's neat um but if I got to put Kiki Jiki in the in the commander um zone next to Zedru yeah that is really cool I could like definitely build the deck around that interaction as opposed to Kiki Jiki is just in the 99, then what is the rest of the deck doing when I don't have Kiki Jiki?
00:08:03
Speaker
Yeah. It's kind of been the challenge. I just ordered an altered Kiki Jiki, from mod fly for my February commission.

Show Recommendations: Hasbun Hotel and Hell of a Boss

00:08:11
Speaker
um I'm, I'm on his Patreon, which, uh, at a certain tier level, you get a discount off a monthly, ah commission,
00:08:20
Speaker
ah And i i ordered ah I ordered Kiki Jiki done as Nifty from Hasbun Hotel because she's such a little goblin energy character.
00:08:34
Speaker
okay That is something I'm not familiar with. What is Hasbun Hotel? You don't know. you do you know what Hell of a Boss is Have you heard of either of these shows? um they are um They are musicals that take place in the Helliverse, which is, ah it is, well, originally it was like two separate, um they were like, you could tell they were the same place, but because of rights holders, they were in separate ah stories, but now they're the same story. So they they take place in Hell, and they're their' comedy musicals. ah
00:09:07
Speaker
And they're they're fantastic. ah yeah Hell of a Boss is a YouTube show ah that just got picked up by Amazon for its next season and Has Been Hotel is an Amazon exclusive show.
00:09:21
Speaker
ah But I think you would really enjoy them if you gave them a watch. I will have to pull that up. i i Nifty is, a she's the maid at the Haspin Hotel and she is pure goblin energy. She's this little demon ah and absolutely adorable and loves stabbing things.
00:09:42
Speaker
Sweet.
00:09:45
Speaker
Cool. I'll have to check those out. I i have ah Amazon Prime for a little while right now because they gave it to me for free while i was trying to use up some Amazon credit.
00:09:56
Speaker
Well, I highly recommend it then. It is a fantastic show. ah They have very different um very different tones to the two shows, but they're both ah they both are comedies and they're both very enjoyable.
00:10:15
Speaker
so Cool. Well, we've got two stories left to cover for Lorwyn Eclipse.

Lorwyn Stories by Seanan McGuire

00:10:23
Speaker
ah You know, i'll like the rest of stories, these are by Seanan McGuire, the rest of the main set stories.
00:10:30
Speaker
ah And where we left off ah last time, we had just gotten to the um point where they're back in front of the Sulu, the Night Beast, and they've just gone into the Shadowmoor side.
00:10:52
Speaker
ah And all of these various factions are gathering. The elves are there just on the Lorwyn side and the Kithkin are there on the Shadowmoor side. And we're all setting up for this big fight.
00:11:03
Speaker
Yeah. and and And our students have all been scattered as well. We've got who's who's your Tam and and. um My My Blank and Tam and Sanar are on this battlefront while this is all setting up, Kirill is off somewhere. here all just Yeah, basically it's just coming up here. yeah um and we and carol is off Everybody will be coming together real soon. but as As we're starting to say, Johnny had just showed up to help Kirill escape from the elves.
00:11:37
Speaker
And then Abigail had gone to spend a little time with the merfolk. Hadn't seen her since then. So um right where we pick up, I am again reading from the ah the DVD extras version, which has Seanan's commentary with it. So um ah if you enjoy that sort of thing, I highly recommend reading it. It's on her blog, but I will be bringing in some of Seanan's commentary as well. Yeah. And she does that for every set she writes for magic, right? So there's other sets that you, if you're going back and reading other magic. Yeah. Dusk Morn one was really good too. If you want some good behind the scenes info on Dusk Morn. And, uh, uh, yeah, so we have, uh,
00:12:26
Speaker
We pick up kind of like right in the middle of this chaos. And again, they're discussing like, you Aisling's discussing about how, you know, the night isn't bad. It's just different. And Tam is, she, she's still a little confused and, and, you know, she's, she's been on the side of like, well, the night, the night's bad. Look at how they changed the Kithkin and stuff. And, um but Asulu is actually come, comes close to them in his, in, uh,
00:12:55
Speaker
It actually forms a circle around them and it's ah it's protecting us, said Tam, odd and confused. It wants to keep us safe, but we're not from here. It shouldn't care about us. ah Which is interesting that they're... um ah And then we get this line from Aisling. Night is flawed, said Aisling, picking a spear dropped by one of the circling Kithkin. So is Day. Both can care for things outside their normal boundaries.
00:13:21
Speaker
Mm-hmm. And and i like I do like the line kind of leading into this too, while Aisling is kind of, while this sort of battlefronts are kind of setting up, there's there's a moment where Aisling is kind of explaining, you know, the differences between night and day and things. And I love Tam responding, is this really the right time for a lecture about day and night? And I do like, love Aisling's response to that is anytime the world provides a clear example is the right time to point it out.
00:13:48
Speaker
Mm-hmm. And then we have Marlin calling after, um at the very end of the last story, she sees the little fairy that's been following them walk onto the Shadowmoor side and becoming you know a little gold-flecked green fairy that she recognizes, and she calls out brother. So she finally recognizes that this fairy is her the other creation of Una, her brother, um because she didn't recognize him because, one, he's a shapeshifter, and two, she's never she was unfamiliar with his Lorwyn self.
00:14:18
Speaker
Yep. and And now she's seeing his Shadowmore self for the first time. Yeah. um And then here's here's a good line from Sean, too. It's like, Marlon got got to be an elf all the time instead of a shapeshifter. Marlon got slightly screwed.
00:14:36
Speaker
Yeah. And Cenar's like, maybe this isn't the time. They're coming. Yeah. Students are understandably very worried about the marching armies on two sides.
00:14:51
Speaker
and So we have, you know, then the these elves are setting up. It's they kind of see these battle lines forming. um And then one of the one of the things that the the elves have is they have chained in captive sunlight elementals, which is allowing them to walk in the night as their day selves.
00:15:10
Speaker
Yeah. Aisling is not a fan of. Yeah. Understandably so. They've enslaved these elementals. yup um Yeah. and And then, you know, Marilyn responds, have you ever known the elves of Lorin to be guided by the needs of anyone else?
00:15:31
Speaker
Una cast me as one of their number for a reason. Marilyn of the Mourn song was selfish and short-sighted as the rest of them. She would have been a perfect mask for her maker. And then another fun line, though, is that ah um they're talking about like how Marlon grew to be her own person. It's like, that happens with goblin babies, too, said Sanar. I mean, we don't normally turn into elves or anything, but we get bigger as we age. I love Sanar trying to contribute to the conversation.
00:16:01
Speaker
that's like That's great.
00:16:06
Speaker
And then finally, Ashul is like, said can we argue about this later? Try not to get stabbed. Yeah. um So. And as as the battle started, here's a line that really struck me. i thought this was a cool line. Just that the elves struck as individuals and the Kithkin moved as one. Because that's kind of part of the Kithkin like hive mind operates.
00:16:29
Speaker
Mm-hmm. Especially Yeah, and operates even better on the Shadowmoor side because it's them against the world on that side. It goes into that a little bit earlier that we skipped over, but, you know they really work as one on the Shadowmoor side of things.
00:16:45
Speaker
Yeah. Because I think there's some line from Aisling, like, they're always community-centric, but never so much. or Yeah, here's their. Kithkin are always community-oriented, but never so well united by day. Mm-hmm.
00:17:00
Speaker
um so yeah So then we have um some some back and forth, though, as as the Kithkin managed to knock some of these reliquaries

Epic Battle and Character Development

00:17:12
Speaker
loose. Yeah, they're releasing the sunlight elementals.
00:17:16
Speaker
Yes, which the as as the elves no longer have the sunlight elementals near them, then it does cause some of these elves to change to their Shadowmores side, which then creates an even more chaotic battlefield. So they straightened and grow larger, with their horns grow larger, covered in tiny thorns, looking at horror at the battle around them. Some turn to flee only to find their former former allies turning against them. Yeah, here here's another good Shawnee line. The Shadowmore elves did not agree to any of this bullshit, and they would like to remove themselves from the narrative now. Okay, thanks. Bye.
00:17:51
Speaker
Mm-hmm. So you kind of have, yeah, you you sort of end up with this weird three multiple part battle prop. You have you have this the Lorwyn elves with a determined purpose, the Shadowmorkithkin with a sort of determined purpose of get them out of here, and then the Shadowmork elves of just like trying to defend themselves while all of this fighting is going on. And...
00:18:18
Speaker
then the students are caught in the middle of it with Marilyn and a Sulu. Yeah. and ah And Sinar throws a rock and an elf. Yes. Very effectively.
00:18:31
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. A Prismari goblin. And it knows how to throw some elves. Back off, you snarled. I don't understand what's going on here or why it's happening. And maybe you're the good guys, but you're pointing arrows at my friend. So I don't really care who the good guys are because we're not the bad guys. Leave us alone. We're not a part of all this. We just want to go home.
00:18:51
Speaker
Yeah. And then he picked up another rock and slung it hard at an elf next to the one with the bow he was His aim was remarkably good. Yeah. ah Again, he he breaks the reliquary, which then the And here's another good Seanan comment. Sinara would do great at a sport that involved a lot of throwing things. Sadly, he isn't really looking at a career in Mage Tower anytime soon, but he's got an uncanny eye for hitting his targets.
00:19:18
Speaker
Mm-hmm.
00:19:20
Speaker
Yeah, and we get we get more, this one thing that is woven in here very well among the story that's actually happening, the characters we have and and these different factions, but you get lots of looks at how the change between Lorwyn and Shadowmoor just kind of happens to different people who live on this plane and and how...
00:19:43
Speaker
confusing and how jarring that can be. Cause you, you, we get it sort of as a, on a high, you know, and on a larger level. And then we get to see it on more individual basis for some folks, I guess over the whole story too, because we, we saw that with the Kithkin in the first story as well.
00:19:58
Speaker
ah And then Tam actually makes use of her Gorgon powers real quick and ah uses ah flashes her eyes at an archer and stuns them. So she doesn't turn things to stone, but she can stun them.
00:20:13
Speaker
And then she takes an arrow to the gut, ah
00:20:19
Speaker
which makes Sinara grab a sword and start swinging it around wildly because his friend just got hurt. Yep. After throwing the last two stones he had.
00:20:30
Speaker
two more then to make even things even more chaotic, this is when Rhys shows back up. Yep. Yep. And addresses Marlon as Una. So he really thinks that Una's in charge at this point.
00:20:44
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. And then his line, I made your heir a promise and made my friend a promise. This ends now. The cycle is more important than my care for Marilyn.
00:20:57
Speaker
And then as soon as he cuts her with the the poison knife, he realizes something is wrong. Cause his then next line is you didn't fight.
00:21:09
Speaker
You didn't fight or try to control me or promise me riches be on counting. You didn't, you weren't. And then he was cut off. Then he's cut off.
00:21:19
Speaker
By, uh, but by you and his brother.
00:21:26
Speaker
And this is when the elf drops or the, the other fairy drops back in. and ah Una is dead. Marlon was my sister. And, uh, They are not happy ah at all about Reese just stabbing Marlin.
00:21:42
Speaker
um And they shapeshift out, and it's Oko! It's Oko, a twist that I did not see coming.
00:21:54
Speaker
oh It's just it' sexy Oco, which anybody who's seen the set now would know. But, ah you know, Alex hasn't been following social media or the cards or anything. So this got to be a surprise for him, which I'm glad it did because it's a fun thing to find out.
00:22:12
Speaker
Yeah, it is. As I'll tell you before, I take some notes when I'm reading some of these stories and I didn't take a lot of notes for this one, but I did. I did have have MF and Oko in my notes for this episode. It's like, oh, OK, well, here we go.
00:22:28
Speaker
Yeah. And then and then Oko and Reese go back and forth a little bit. it's some some very high tensions until Sanar puts in and every and they're like, wait, what?
00:22:44
Speaker
And he kind of just... Yeah, they're they're going back and forth and then Sanar manages to just ah bring them back to the thing.
00:22:55
Speaker
Like, she's... spoken yeah dying My friend is dying. Yes, my friend is dying. i don't know how to fix this. and then manages to... Yeah, but Oko's like, my sister, my family dies more swiftly. They're both dying, and now they're arguing about who's dying faster. yep Oko. Yeah.
00:23:18
Speaker
Yes, and then... Yes. And I like this bit. Another comment from Sean. Oko is monologuing the Kump Marlin at least a little as she dies.
00:23:30
Speaker
Because he loves to monologue. Oh, he does. It's so bad. And again, as they're, they're kind of arguing about Reese, the promise he made, but then the fact that he was wrong and, and all of this, that he was convinced. And then this is where, this where Oko actually finally admits to what he was doing?
00:23:53
Speaker
Yes. So we were both mistaken. I thought she was Una. So I taunted and tormented her. And that when that didn't work, I brought an outsider to so chaos. Yeah. But you know what she did? She ran. She fled for her world's sake, for the cycle's sake, and she proved herself to have never been our mother at all.
00:24:08
Speaker
Mm-hmm. Oh, but the part even is are they're like, why can't they save her? but Because the knife was coated in Moonglow. You know, the deadly poison, the same one they were going to use to poison Asulu.
00:24:23
Speaker
Uh...
00:24:26
Speaker
Yeah. Um...
00:24:31
Speaker
And then he turned an elf into a... ah Yes, because more elves came up to interrupt, and then just in case you weren't sure, Oko turned herself into an elk.
00:24:44
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah, Oko does love turning things into elk. Yep. so and Again, and they're arguing back. for which I think there's some good stuff here. and if if you're really interested like I think this is good character stuff, but it's maybe not the best podcasting to go back and forth. but i Yeah, Sinar is still throwing rocks at people, by the way. That's important to point out.
00:25:09
Speaker
Gotta love the little godwin still protecting his friend. Yeah, but as we kind of get to the end of this before there's a change, some more people come on the scene, you get these couple of quick sentences we have. I only did as she asked me, said Reese, voice gone small. The prince advanced, Reese stepped back.
00:25:27
Speaker
Marilyn and Tam continued die. Like very specific, like these two are going back and forth and not actually resolving anything. And then we get some new folks coming on the scene with ah a large white figure vaulted over the line of elves and a smaller, darker figure cradled close to it.

Ajani's Healing and Plans

00:25:49
Speaker
Oh, yeah, here we go, because there was suddenly a loud roaring. Yeah, then a loud roar split the night, echoing off the hills and the trees alike. All who were capable of movement moved, turned toward the sound, even Sonar and the night elemental.
00:26:03
Speaker
And this is when Ajani comes onto the scene carrying Kirill. um And it's, I love, cause this is a moment, again, we we play magic as magic players. We see stuff from all these different planes. And so even if it would be intimidating to see a large lion-esque person, though a a humanoid of ah ah yeah in the shape of a lion.
00:26:29
Speaker
If you didn't know that could exist, it would be even more intimidating. Johnny is also just really big and really tall and really intimidating, even though he's giant pussycat.
00:26:39
Speaker
Yeah, and and that would be scary if you knew those existed. But if so if you had never left your plane and and Leonin are not native to this plane, it would be even more... Yeah....caused you to stop for a moment.
00:26:57
Speaker
So, Kirill says, this is a Johnny. He's a friend of Professor Vess's. He patted the white Leonin on the arm, not seeming to notice his wince at being called Professor Vess's friend. ah that shaun its come ah Johnny has been upgraded to Liliana's friend in quotes. Oh, he is not thrilled by this news.
00:27:15
Speaker
Yes. And so, yeah. And then we get the the students giving an update, you know, okay, where's, where's Abigail? Where's, you know, how's Tam doing?
00:27:28
Speaker
And then Kirill gets to explain their story of being met, but being grabbed by the local elves. Yeah.
00:27:40
Speaker
And then Oko somehow recognizes Professor Vess as Liliana. um I don't know how Oko knows that Professor Vess is Liliana. I guess, well, he he was on Strixhaven and had tricked the students, so he might have you might have actually seen her, but it doesn't really ah clarify yeah I don't know it I don't know for sure but she's also using the same last name she's used on other planes before so it's possible that that
00:28:16
Speaker
you know, is not as as much of a secret identity as as it would be, especially now. Yeah, I mean, that is her last name. Originally, she was going with Professor Onyx, I think, when she first showed up at Strixhaven. And then at the end of the Strixhaven story, she starts just using Professor Vess.
00:28:35
Speaker
Yes, that's right. Yeah, apparently they met. Do you know, was this in a written story that I missed? Or... Do you know where Oko and Liliana would have met? I have no idea. I don't know if they're having met at all in the story.
00:28:53
Speaker
that's That's fair. I mean, and Liliana is old. Liliana is very old, yes. And honestly, Oko is probably pretty old, too, given the timeline of when. Yeah, we know it's been it's been quite a while since the Aurora. a few hundred years, I think.
00:29:09
Speaker
I don't think it was that long. okay. But it has been quite a while. It's been more than decades. Okay. And so, and if Oko was, you know, ah Una's first attempt at creating, you know, so Oko is probably would be older than that even.
00:29:29
Speaker
So those two may have just run into each other at some time before all the sparks went away.
00:29:38
Speaker
Yeah. So the Oco recognizes that name and then is like, okay. So you are from the, uh, oh yeah. Yeah. Cause he just said, then what we get from Oco here, she and I both walked the planes at the same time. She knows me as Oco.
00:29:58
Speaker
And, uh,
00:30:01
Speaker
And as they kind of talk through the problem here, the moon glove poison, that's when Kiro brings up the fact that, hey, i know i know where Dawn Glove is. Does that help?
00:30:12
Speaker
ah ah Turns out it might help. And it also is just convenient that Ajani is a healer as well. Yes, that's that is true, because he's he's he does try to help um Tam right away, which, great, is Johnny jumping right in to help. And then Kirill talks through their story being abducted by Luwin, finding perfect high perfect Morkant, and this whole plan to kill Isulu.
00:30:46
Speaker
And then mentioning, when but I saw the dawn glove and let me tell you that plant is magical. Yeah. This is a non magic poisons. Don't always have opposites that counteract, but this plan, this plan is magic.
00:31:00
Speaker
Yeah. Uh,
00:31:03
Speaker
And I like this, and and it's like, Kyril's like, we need to find that Dawn Glover. This lady's going to die, and I think we'll be in real trouble if that happens. And Sinar gave him a flat look. We're not in trouble now.
00:31:16
Speaker
We're not in trouble now.
00:31:20
Speaker
ah yeah we're in so much trouble but if they live we might get out of it uh Johnny's got Tam we need to help Marilyn let's go moments and then what's the worst that could happen of course yeah and then Sinar managed to not to roll his eyes but followed leaving a Johnny and Reese to tend to the two injured as as they slipped into the night and they come upon perfect Morkant who has the dawn glow that they need of course uh And ah
00:31:53
Speaker
Kirill says, the dawn glow, we have to get it away from her. Okay, Sanar said and threw a rock. that And Seanan's reply, Sanar has a primary answer to many problems, and it is rock. If rock doesn't work, go to explosion.
00:32:07
Speaker
That's perfect goblin logic. He he completes that trifecta later in one of these stories that we're going to about today, too. Yuck. Um, so we get back in there and, uh, you know, uh, Lewin shows up and um in, uh, in self and, uh, headbutts, um, basically headbutts Moorcan, uh,
00:32:44
Speaker
And who drops the vial, ah or well, Lewin takes the vial and then tosses it to Sanar. Yep, and and then Lewin takes the elemental from her, probably. To snatch something from her belt, she clasps gasps, clearly disoriented, and tries to grab what he took back.
00:33:06
Speaker
yeah The comment from Seanan is, Morkant didn't have a chained elemental, but a more powerful artifact to keep her morded to Lorwyn. There you go So yeah, it doesn't really specify in the story. Just as yeah, holding up what looked like a gourd attached to a leather cord, but has the same effect.
00:33:25
Speaker
um He went, he turned back to his daylight form while holding it and more can't turned into her shadow more form.
00:33:37
Speaker
and sear I have no idea what just happened. And I look, Carol, well this we'll we'll discuss it later, Carol said, and grab Lewin's free hand in their own. Come on, Lulu.
00:33:49
Speaker
Where are we going? and Wait, what did you just call me? i me yeah We're going to see the queen. And then that's the end of the story. And I love that. Yeah. Oh, that's great.
00:34:01
Speaker
that's great and so so On to chapter seven. The last main storyline. Main story for this thing.
00:34:16
Speaker
And then the ah the day elemental shows up. ah Because things are not confusing enough yet. no yeah we can We get one more loud cry that makes everyone stop for a moment. And we have Oko here. is Now he said you come to us now.
00:34:34
Speaker
Yep. um Yeah. A golden glow appeared on the horizon, growing brighter and brighter, rising like the sun. Is it Erdo?
00:34:47
Speaker
do you think you pronounce the... up here. So this the day elemental kind of elops lopes in.
00:34:55
Speaker
And then Oko tries to stay in the in the night. And along with Erdo, we have Abigail. Yeah. Abigail's back. So everybody's back together.
00:35:10
Speaker
Yeah. yeah You have, you have Sinar or or as well as Carol is shouting, Abigail, if they shout Abigail over here. so I was like, well, you she can't, she can't hear you, you know, and then, you know, it's, yeah, but she's alive. She'll see me waving down here.
00:35:27
Speaker
Yeah. It's funny that Sanar is the one to actually point that out. Yeah, I'll be honest. In in my head, it was Sanar who was shouting. And then I went, wait, that's the wrong pronoun for Sanar. And then realized, oh, I had the character mixed up.
00:35:46
Speaker
Yeah, so then then they got they have this dongle and they have to get this

Oko's Redemption Journey

00:35:51
Speaker
back to him. Yeah, it's like, where are we going, asked Lewin. To save the queen, said Keral. Lewin looked utterly amused. I thought we were going to go see the queen. We can do both, said Keral. Yep.
00:36:03
Speaker
Yeah, and so then... Yeah, and again, there's there's just a lot of... And then Lewin's like, who... And then Oko shows up, grabs the vial to go try to save his sister. It's like, who is that?
00:36:15
Speaker
It's a long story. Let's just come on.
00:36:22
Speaker
Uh... And um ah Johnny Tess didn't flinch as Oko dropped out of ah the air in front of him. Once more, in human size, as he landed on the heels of his leather-cled fleet, he barely spared a glance for Tam as he thrusts the valley he carried toward the Leeuwen planeswalker. And Shonan's comment here is, Oko really doesn't care if Tam dies. It's professionally simple to be him. Oko only cares about what Oko cares about, as we saw with how he treated Kellen.
00:36:49
Speaker
He used just uses Calvin as a tool. He is, he is not dad of the year at all. Uh, and, but he is trying to be a decent brother at least, but he, he's doing it at Tam's expense.
00:37:02
Speaker
And he just was my sister, he said, voice imperilence and cold, save her. ah Yeah, and then we get Ajani. It's like, I'm trying to save the girl. it shouldn't be so hard. It's like the natural pattern of healing can't catch hold of her injuries. I've unmade the damage and Errol can do 10 times over and she keeps bleeding.
00:37:22
Speaker
See to your sister yourself. Yeah, and then ah the magic of Loreman Shadowmore is fed by stories that, okay, the story we're in right now is one of death and damage and terrible sacrifice. If you want her to live, you have to save the queen. Yeah. Yeah.
00:37:39
Speaker
Yeah, and this where you get some, maybe some introspection from Oka, because you have Reese says, I fear the queen may past saving. And then Oka says, no, no, I refuse. This is not how my little sister's story ends. She's mine now that I found her, and I won't let her slip away from me.
00:37:57
Speaker
I won't fail her. I remember. Creatures of Shadowmar aren't meant to remember who they are by day, but I do, and I know the other me failed his son. He had a son and he failed him. He's failed every lover he's ever taken. We both failed our mother maker when we ran away. Night or day, I refuse to fail my sister. She alone shall hold the whole of my success.
00:38:18
Speaker
Boko actually sort of cares about somebody else. In his own way, but um But he had been he'd been avoiding, you know, go back going back a little bit, he'd been avoiding coming over to the Lorwyn side. He was trying to stay on the Shadowmoor side in the shadows until he had to go over to where Marlon was because he doesn't like being his slightly better self.
00:38:46
Speaker
Yeah. And and then we have another line from him to follow that up. wrote ah What a cruel world to force one such as I to play the hero as he brings the vial to her lips trying to get some of this in her system, but to hope that it counteracts the the poison from the other plant.
00:39:09
Speaker
And then we see that he manages to slowly get her to swallow some, and then she's getting... He's able to then get more, and she's able to swallow more, and and he's he's able to kind of nurse her, getting back to a better state.
00:39:29
Speaker
Yeah. And I like this when they get back there. ah he He's talking, Oko's talking to Reese and Reese is like, are you going to transform me into something I'm not supposed to be now? Ask Reese. You seen what Oko had made of the elf hunter that tried to attack them before? And hit the and Sean's comment is, Reese doesn't want to be a rabbit.
00:39:48
Speaker
That's a great line. oh That's a great line. See, actually, I like his response. If I can, Oko's response to that too. um I, I, or he says, um, you're already so already something you're not supposed to be betrayer of my sister. You're alive. That should have changed long ago, but I'm not going to be the one who changes it. Now you thought you were destroying a tyrant and that at least I can respect.
00:40:17
Speaker
Oko hates tyrants more than anything and he's willing to completely wreck a society to bring what he sees as a tyrant down which is what he did his first trip to Eldraine he basically caused all of that just to knock the humans down a rung cause all a kiss yep yeah that thought that again good line to reflect back to some of the things he's done ah Yeah, and and then um Carol and Sanar turn to a Johnny and Tam.
00:40:51
Speaker
um Meanwhile, Lewin continue to stare at Hoko. Like that, yes, Hoko says. It's like, I don't know you. Of course you don't. You're an elf, but I feel I should know you. And then Hoko smirked. and Here we get Hoko again. Everyone should know me. I'm the most important person this plane has ever produced. Yeah, yeah. And Seanan's comment here is, okay, so he's still Oko. Even in his Lurwyn side, he's still Oko.
00:41:23
Speaker
Yep. Just making sure. We we still got to know. he's he's He's playing the hero a little bit, but he's still Oko.
00:41:33
Speaker
Yeah, and then after... After Marilyn is better, Oco goes over to Ajani and offers a few drops of the Dawn Glow to see if that'll help help Tam. now that Now that he has secured the one he cares about, he's offering what's left over to try to help.
00:41:54
Speaker
Offering what's left to Ajani so that Ajani can try to help. It's like, not so much that Oco's going to help, but it's it's like, well, if this doesn't cost me anything, I'll let you try to help.
00:42:06
Speaker
And then Oko moved toward him. I offer this only because Marlon doesn't need it, and it's better not to let the knight's gifts go to waste. Don't mistake practicality for kindness.
00:42:17
Speaker
That's right. Not only is that like in sort of um the subtext, but then Oko can't help but make it the text text of his actions too.
00:42:30
Speaker
Yeah. And ah and then ah he said, I would never have said a Johnny's. He took the vial tipping its kind and over Tam's wound and placed his hand on top of the injury once more. And Sean has dealt with this kind of person before way too frequently. Really? Yeah. It's like, fine, whatever. You tell yourself whatever you need. You're giving me something to help. I don't care.
00:42:52
Speaker
And then i like said, I feel so helpless. And then Carol's response, it's better than making Tam explode.
00:43:03
Speaker
Helpful. Thank you.

Elemental Balance in Lorwyn

00:43:06
Speaker
Yeah. And now in the background, we have, you know, Erdu Isalu, like, coming, you know, getting closer to each other. And, and you know, Rhys wins, says, if the Elementals fight, we'll all be crushed.
00:43:23
Speaker
um And then we have Aisling, who, and even the story here says, who had been quiet for too long. You know, so let's say who hasn't said anything for a while. ah it Turns her face towards the approaching day. Shola's relaxing slightly. The battle ends. The morning comes.
00:43:36
Speaker
The mournsong will be sun again. you see those, those two coming together and not fighting. They come together and then they, they bow to each other and pounce and start wrestling, play fighting with exquisite care. So they don't squish the small people. And, and Sean and his common is big, friendly dogs greet each other like this. They didn't come to fight. They never wanted to fight. Yep.
00:44:03
Speaker
Yeah, and and that's kind of the kind of going back to a lot of the things that Aisling has been saying, trying to explain to both the students and to be perfectly honest, the readers too. It's like the the night and the day in Lorwyn are not opposites that, you know, they're they're two parts of the same whole.
00:44:22
Speaker
And so they're they're not things that are trying to cancel each other out or fight. They're two parts of the same whole, at least as represented in these two elementals who...
00:44:33
Speaker
bring that balance. And then you have Marilyn say that too. The balance is here. And then Oko saying the balance has always been here. People like our maker are just too small to see it as the two elementals continue to just like play.
00:44:50
Speaker
Yeah. And we get the, you know, in and Abigail this whole time has been on some kind of side quest with the Merfolk, but we never really find out what it is. um ah and ah Sean's comment here is, Abigail had a whole parallel adventure, and I both sort of hope it's one of the side stories, and we'll be okay if it's not. She basically summarized the whole thing right here.
00:45:11
Speaker
So... Uh, yeah. Abigail, unfortunately, was not present for most of the story and we didn't get to see her little side quest, but. No, no. We get, we get her explanation just after falling in the river, she found the merfolk. Um, they, they were staying with Erdu. Um, it was sleeping and they were guarding it as long as they stayed close. didn't change.
00:45:36
Speaker
Um, um, that you know that seemed to matter to them they have no continuity of memory you know then but what happened it's like that's what i'm trying to tell you can you listen and so then abigail contented continues it after they brought abigail to erdo it woke up because um it smelled his sulu on my clothing began to follow me as i moved to leave the waters and then from there um it was it was my turn to follow and it came all the way to this battlefield and then he was like okay now what happened out here and then they try to explain kind of all the events of the rest of the story that like you say abigail just just missed being on her own side quest yep uh
00:46:24
Speaker
And then we cut back to a discussion between Oko and Marlon and Reese and, um, surprised by striking Marlon down, Reese kept his

Reese's Resolution

00:46:35
Speaker
word. So he's no longer bound to her. Uh, and that means he going to be dead because he's been on borrowed time for decades and decades. Uh, uh,
00:46:48
Speaker
as we discussed previously. ah So he gets the he gets a path to exile to the face, which is what you should do to Reese if you see him in a commander game. um Yes. though Though, based on the pace of this conversation, I think he kind of, he was okay with that.
00:47:07
Speaker
because Because she did say, hey, you know, you need to make a promise to me right now. That promise no longer binds you. um And then he said, you know we can be friends without being bound to one another if you can ever trust me again. And that's when Aisling explains, like, that promise is what was keeping you alive.
00:47:24
Speaker
um And then he thanked her. And you um and then that's when he he fades.
00:47:35
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah.
00:47:38
Speaker
ah And then um ah Johnny's like, well, we there's an omen path to Shadow, to Chandelar. And then from there, we can take you home to Strixhaven. And Luluan's just like, ah what about me? Yeah, because I sort of just betrayed my queen. Yeah. i like yeah they're like um He's like, you're forgetting me.
00:47:58
Speaker
and then Ajani's like, you're not one of the students I was sent to find. And Lewin's response, no, but I helped one of those students. And if I stay here, they will kill me. And then Ajani, I love the follow-up to that. He's like, well, you'd be traveling to a school. You'd be expected to take classes. It's like, I think he's okay with that class. Yeah.
00:48:17
Speaker
like oh one the line The line right after that one about that, they will kill me. It's like, yeah, that perfect lady is going to kill ah for sure. You're going to kill him. Yes. Yeah. And then Tim's like, the cross planner student program is still taking admissions. It'll be fine. And then finally he's just like, you know what? If Liliana kicks you up out, kicks you right back through an omen path, it's not my problem. Come on,

Return to Strixhaven and Consequences

00:48:41
Speaker
everybody. Yeah.
00:48:46
Speaker
But yeah, then then the this the the next scene is kind of fun where they went through the Omen path. think this was to Chandelar. Yeah, because then this is the first time Lewin has ever seen another plane.
00:49:01
Speaker
And... and
00:49:05
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. And then I do love Abigail asks, are we in trouble? And then John's like, no, not at all. Now come along. And then two lines later, you are in so much trouble, young lady, says Liliana behind her desk.
00:49:23
Speaker
I thought endlessly better of you than this. It was accident, said Tam. clearly more terrified to be scolded by a professor than she had been of any of the near-death experiences of Lorwood.
00:49:36
Speaker
Yes. that There's no need to take any academic measures. It won't happen again. I promise. i I had forgotten in all of the adventures that had happened, Tam was was the like overachiever student like in the class. and So, yeah, of course, that would be more terrifying, would be yelling, having being lectured by a professor.
00:49:58
Speaker
Yeah. um and then And then you're certainly right about that because next time I'm not going to send and i'm not going to ask Goldmaine for another favor. I'm just leaving you wherever you end up. There are far more dangerous places in the multiverse than Lorewind. And from what I've told, your time there was dangerous enough.
00:50:14
Speaker
Count yourself lucky you all came back with as good a story and with a good story and a strange elf. Encounters with that bastard Oko rarely end well for anyone but him. Yep. another Another little reference to some past that the two of them had.
00:50:30
Speaker
Yeah. Or at least passing, uh, each other. you so Yeah. They're at least aware of each other, which I'm sure Oco's had quite the reputation in the multiverse, uh, considering how much trouble he likes causing.
00:50:50
Speaker
so that's where it picks off.

Future Podcast Plans

00:50:53
Speaker
And then, you know, Seanan points out, we'll see you in April for omens of chaos. So, ah
00:51:01
Speaker
so we've we've got you know a ah novel and the actual Strixhaven set that'll have some story too coming up so we got got a good amount good amount of story in the in the coming month couple of months yeah before that we've got some we've got some stuff to finish up in the time spiral block which will be the next thing we get to um But ah what we we actually should have brought the stuff at the top of the show, but if you're still listening, it's probably a good time to talk about what we have planned coming up for the future. um you know, one thing we've decided to do is go to roughly every other week recording, and that's going to be our goal. But, um you know, sometimes we might not make it. Sometimes we will. But.
00:51:55
Speaker
you know, we're all kind of just tired and worn out with everything going on in the world. And, you know, especially, you know, for people from Minneapolis, like Alex and Hobbs or trans people like me, it's, it's not been a great time really in general.
00:52:12
Speaker
No, uh, And, ah you know, it'll be um so we're going to be taking it a little easier on our recording schedule. Also, with just how much time there is between story now ah it gives us more time to just talk about what story there is and what we have going on.
00:52:30
Speaker
ah And but on the bright side, Hobbs should be coming back in March to at least once in a while. He'll be back on the show. And we really are looking forward to having him back on.
00:52:42
Speaker
oh Yeah. Yeah. and And we'll kind of see what the, what we ended up kind of covering with, with this time, with this new, new schedule to um like say that the time trial block is stuff. I definitely want to get back to you. I talked through,
00:52:57
Speaker
We went through, you and i went through the Time Spiral set, I think the first one, and then I did the next two solo back in December. So if you are interested in the story of those sets, we we have episodes for those. But what we didn't get to, which we we did for Invasion, like i I really want to sit down and talk through kind of the Malthos story. And there's so much of it to talk about for this block. Oh my God. That's one of the reasons I think I am kind of at the Malthos. A lot of the Mel, both, I guess, really the Mel and the Vorthos components in me, a lot of it comes from to from this block. Like I loved how they built these cards with mechanics and story and history And all this stuff plugged together. And so that's definitely stuff we're going to do. I think those will be episodes that Tay and I cover um at times when Hobbs can't come on for for various reasons. So we'll we'll kind of see what comes next. We're going to play it by ear a little bit. Obviously, we're going to definitely talk about Strixhaven's story when that comes out. We're definitely going to talk about Omen of...
00:54:02
Speaker
Sorry, what's chaos? Chaos. Thank you. ah I want to say omen of clarity, but I'm pretty sure that's a World of Warcraft spell. Omens of chaos. When that comes out, it's like we have that magic story. We'll definitely talk about that if we get random story. Like we're not going to have another set for a while that story. But who knows? Maybe we get lucky and there's some stuff in the summer where they sometimes come up with story about sets that are a little less.
00:54:29
Speaker
Or they out with like they had that pride story featuring Watley and Saheeli a couple of years ago. so it would be nice if we got something like that for pride month. Yep. We get something like that. We'll absolutely cover that. And so we'll definitely cover the magic story stuff. And then kind of in between we've we'll, we'll kind of see where the topics we're definitely going talk time spiral. We may go back to some older sets. If, if that is the stuff, if we're kind of looking for things. we There's going to be so much story for strict saving though. That'll, that'll take us a while to get through. Yeah. Especially at this recording pace. So we'll, we'll be talking st strict saving for, for a while.
00:55:06
Speaker
um which will be cool. And, and ah yeah, and we'll, and we'll see. And if, if stuff changes, or we want to, if we're going to change our scheduling again, you know, we'll, we'll let folks know, but for now we were hoping that every other week can help us be more consistent at a pace, even if it's not a weekly pace while also giving us a little more time to in between episodes, a little more time to plan and, and,
00:55:31
Speaker
recover from everything else going on. And then we can, if there's weeks where we can kind of record ahead, well, then we can record ahead. We'll we'll we'll figure out what we're going to do. And and hopefully this pace works for us all.
00:55:43
Speaker
but All right. Well, all that said, we are glad if you're joining us, if you're interested, if you'll enjoy the story, there's three more side stories for this set. There's all the DVD extras from, from Shannon on her site. And otherwise we'll see you back for our next episode with whatever we're talking about. And eventually on to some Strixhaven story.
