The Untold, Ugly Truth Of How A 19 Year Old College Dropout Made Over $1 Million In Solar Commissions In Less Than 2 Years

I've never shared this before...

Yes, you’ve seen the highlight reel of my success as a 23-year-old solar entrepreneur and coach to hundreds of solar pros, and yes my career has been an inspiration for many in the industry...

But what you haven’t seen is the raw, unfiltered, and real story of what’s made me what I am today.

Why?

It’s simple...

What I’m about to share with you are some of the single most difficult moments of my life and it’s taken years for me to work up the courage to publicly share this with the solar community or anyone for that matter.

And the truth is, I’ve been telling a BIG lie...

I’ve been lying to myself, to members of my team, my family, and to the solar community.

Why?

Short answer: Ego

Long answer, I wanted to think that I was different, that I didn't have to go through what everyone else goes through, that I was “special”, but nothing could be further from the truth.

The simple truth of my story is this...

Successful solar careers aren’t built upon highlight reels.

They’re built on sleepless nights, 60-hour workweeks, trips to the ER, panic attacks, going into debt, criticism from loved ones, going 6 months without a sale, and feeling hopeless at times.

In an industry and world that’s constantly selling the “dream” and painting the picture of “I’m my own boss” and “freedom” junkies, today’s solar professional needs a wake-up call!

To have his/her expectations set straight by someone who’s made almost every mistake you possibly can make and has continued to push past the pain until the only option remaining was success.

It’s time YOU hear the truth on what it really takes to reach high levels of success in this industry.

NOT the highlight reel version meant to sell you the dream.

I hope as you listen to my full story that it helps, inspires, and gives hope to you or other solar pros that are going through the same things that I went through.

And I want you to know that there's a light at the end of the tunnel. That there's hope and a way out.

That you don't have to live a life of quiet desperation and suffer alone like I had to.

This video is completely uncensored, filled with the good, but more of the bad and ugly of my journey in solar sales. It's emotional, raw and real.

Here's a quick outline of my story in the video:

Why I dropped out of a prestigious college, left my dreams of becoming a professional jazz musician to begin selling solar at 19

The detailed story of my first 6 excruciating months of not being able to close a single deal in solar while living in my parents' basement

What it was like to be chastized, ridiculed and criticized daily by those closest to me (including my parents and family) and told to give up.

Why and how I ended up in the ER because of solar

And how I escaped, turned my entire life around, became what others deem a "success", and began closing 30+ deals a month

If you don't watch the video, I just want to let you know to keep pushing, keep fighting and that there is hope, even if everyone around you doesn't think so.

You aren't here to be accepted, but the exception. You can't lose if you never give up.

You've got this.

- James

P.S. If any of this resonated with you, all I ask is that you share this podcast with another solar pro and let me know in the comments what specific part did.

Introduction to Solopreneurs

00:00:00
Speaker
What do you call an underground group of solar professionals on a mission to create a more sustainable world?
00:00:05
Speaker
We call ourselves solopreneurs.
00:00:08
Speaker
And while some might call us crazy, foolish, and dissatisfied with the status quo, we're the ones taking action to create a better future for ourselves and the world.
00:00:18
Speaker
Solopreneur is dedicated to give you, the solar professional, the tools, skills, technology, and mentorship to take the industry by storm and sell more solar with less effort.
00:00:30
Speaker
We are solopreneurs and this is our story.

Personal Growth in Solar Industry

00:01:02
Speaker
This video is going to get pretty emotional for a lot of you, and here's why.
00:01:06
Speaker
The lessons I've learned in just my three and a half years in the industry, being 23 years old right now, are light years ahead of what anybody's taught in solar.
00:01:15
Speaker
The lessons that I've taken away, the challenges, the experiences I've had, have been phenomenal.
00:01:20
Speaker
They have shaped me as a business owner, as a man, and they've improved every area of my life.
00:01:26
Speaker
And if there's one thing I can share with a struggling solar professional right now who's not where they want to be, okay?
00:01:33
Speaker
It's this, to hang in there, to stay the course, to remember the fire that you had when you got in solar, and to let that push you, let that drive you past all of the garbage, all of the noise that you're going to go through.
00:01:46
Speaker
All of the doubt, the insecurities, the fears, the late nights worrying about how you're going to pay the bills,
00:01:53
Speaker
worrying about your spouse, your kids, doubting your ability to sell and overcome your limiting beliefs.
00:01:59
Speaker
I know what it's like.
00:02:00
Speaker
Even at the young age of 23, right?
00:02:03
Speaker
When I got started in solar at 19 in Salt Lake City, Utah, I grew up in an environment of mediocrity.
00:02:13
Speaker
My background, right?
00:02:15
Speaker
My family, my loved ones, everybody that I was around
00:02:18
Speaker
were not sales professionals, were not entrepreneurs, had never even made six figures.
00:02:24
Speaker
I was just on a call with my dad just two weeks ago, and he told me about how this year, 2019, is the first year he's gonna make $100,000 in a year as an educator at a middle school.
00:02:37
Speaker
I made six figures when I was 20 years old, okay?
00:02:40
Speaker
Here's my dad, the guy who raised me, right?
00:02:44
Speaker
that I grew up with, now catching up to where I was just at 20.
00:02:49
Speaker
Think about that.
00:02:51
Speaker
I was still living in my parents' basement at 19, 20 years old, right, when this happened, and I still made more money than them.
00:02:58
Speaker
And I don't share this to impress you, but I want to share with you my journey on how this happened.
00:03:04
Speaker
How do you go breaking out of the mold, right, the middle-class family, the mediocrity, the rat race, whatever you want to call it, how do you break out of that
00:03:14
Speaker
When you're raised in that environment, how do you overcome your beliefs?
00:03:18
Speaker
If you've never made 100 grand, 250, 500 grand, how do you do that if you don't even know a single soul who's done so?
00:03:26
Speaker
How do you sell 15, 20 deals a month when the average person at your company is doing three?
00:03:33
Speaker
How do you do these things?
00:03:35
Speaker
This was the question that was on my mind, and my story is

From Music to Solar Sales

00:03:39
Speaker
this.
00:03:39
Speaker
When I got into solar at 19, I dropped out of school, okay?
00:03:43
Speaker
I won't get into all of the background before solar because I don't think it applies directly to you in this video.
00:03:50
Speaker
But I grew up not wanting to be in sales.
00:03:52
Speaker
I didn't know what solar was.
00:03:54
Speaker
I didn't want to be an entrepreneur.
00:03:55
Speaker
I grew up in high school wanting to be, of all things, a professional jazz trumpet player.
00:04:01
Speaker
And I was pretty good at it.
00:04:03
Speaker
I was one of the best in the United States.
00:04:05
Speaker
I won a lot of competitions.
00:04:07
Speaker
I had scholarships to any school I'd want to go to in the U.S. And I left it all.
00:04:13
Speaker
I left that life behind to journey into a new one, a new challenge, a new set of beliefs that I would have to overcome in sales and business.
00:04:23
Speaker
And why?
00:04:24
Speaker
I just knew that I couldn't be a successful performing artist if I didn't know how to personal brand.
00:04:30
Speaker
I didn't know how to sell and be in business for myself.
00:04:33
Speaker
So what did I do?
00:04:35
Speaker
I moved back into my parents' basement at 19.
00:04:38
Speaker
And I went on to Indeed, like a lot of you guys, and I started looking for sales jobs because I wanted to learn how to sell.
00:04:45
Speaker
I didn't want to work at like a fashion department or anything like that or a grocery store.
00:04:50
Speaker
I wanted to learn how to sell big stuff, stuff that mattered, stuff that actually brought income in so I can make a difference.
00:04:57
Speaker
And I came across this job, a recruiting ad, and I didn't say what the company or the product was, but it said one thing that stuck out to me.
00:05:04
Speaker
It was you can make, on average, $2,000 for every sale.
00:05:09
Speaker
I've never seen that kind of money in my life.
00:05:12
Speaker
How can you make $2,000 for a sale?
00:05:15
Speaker
I was very skeptical, of course, but I knew I had to take a shot on this.
00:05:20
Speaker
So I called up the recruiting office and the recruiter had a conversation and interview with me and he told me it was a solar company, a local startup solar company in Salt Lake.
00:05:30
Speaker
They were about 10 minutes from my mom's house so I wouldn't have to go very far for the interview.
00:05:34
Speaker
So I booked the interview for the next day.
00:05:37
Speaker
I'll never forget.
00:05:38
Speaker
It was like it was yesterday.
00:05:39
Speaker
I show up, right?
00:05:40
Speaker
I'm driving a Nissan Versa, super old Nissan Versa, and I drive up there full of doubt, skepticism, never been in sales in my life, right?
00:05:51
Speaker
19 years old, and I know I look super young in this at 23, but imagine how young I looked when I was 19, okay?
00:05:57
Speaker
Straight up baby out of elementary school type of thing.

Early Career Challenges

00:06:01
Speaker
I show up and I have this interview.
00:06:03
Speaker
I sit down with this guy named Jim, and Jim tells me about solar.
00:06:08
Speaker
He gives me a pitch on solar.
00:06:09
Speaker
He talks about net metering.
00:06:11
Speaker
And just this magical moment happened when I realized, holy shit, like this product is a game changer, right?
00:06:18
Speaker
Think about when you had that moment.
00:06:20
Speaker
When somebody told you about solar the very first time, what did that feel like?
00:06:24
Speaker
What was that fire like?
00:06:27
Speaker
Wow, how many of these can I sell, right?
00:06:29
Speaker
Wow, what difference can I make on myself, my family?
00:06:33
Speaker
This is the coolest product I've ever seen, right?
00:06:36
Speaker
That belief that fire was a 10.
00:06:38
Speaker
And that's something that I look for in new solar pros when we're hiring at Lumen here is that 10 on certainty belief.
00:06:48
Speaker
Nobody has that fire like a new sales rep does.
00:06:51
Speaker
Nobody.
00:06:53
Speaker
So what happened?
00:06:57
Speaker
He takes me out the next day and we start training.
00:07:00
Speaker
And I'll never forget, we go to a movie theater.
00:07:02
Speaker
We had a partnership with a movie theater where we spin like a prize wheel.
00:07:06
Speaker
Kids come over, we talk to their parents.
00:07:08
Speaker
And here is the solar sales training that I received, right?
00:07:12
Speaker
Brand new guide of sales.
00:07:14
Speaker
Here's the level of training I got.
00:07:16
Speaker
James, spin the wheel.
00:07:18
Speaker
Kids come over, set an appointment with them.
00:07:20
Speaker
I got to get rolling to an appointment.
00:07:22
Speaker
Bye.
00:07:23
Speaker
That's my training.
00:07:25
Speaker
This is the level of training, the level of care that I was given in this company.
00:07:32
Speaker
So believe me when I tell you, I know what it's like to not get trained, to not have a mentor, to have no guidance in solar.
00:07:42
Speaker
I received almost zero guidance.
00:07:44
Speaker
In fact, it was quite the opposite.
00:07:46
Speaker
When I showed up to the office after that moment, the next day, right?
00:07:51
Speaker
We had an office training.
00:07:52
Speaker
And I show up and there's seven guys in the office, super small team, and everybody looks jaded as hell, right?
00:07:59
Speaker
They don't know what they're doing.
00:08:00
Speaker
They're just sitting around lazy.
00:08:02
Speaker
And I start talking to them.
00:08:03
Speaker
I start saying, hey, how many deals have you closed this month?
00:08:07
Speaker
How many deals are you closing?
00:08:08
Speaker
How long you been in solar?
00:08:10
Speaker
And guess what the top guys' numbers were?
00:08:14
Speaker
Four deals, right?
00:08:15
Speaker
It closed four deals in the last month.
00:08:18
Speaker
Some of these guys have been in the industry 15 years.
00:08:21
Speaker
Four deals.
00:08:22
Speaker
Me, personally, like with the ambition and drive that I had with trumpet and music in my career, right?
00:08:28
Speaker
Because I knew what it was like to be successful at something, just not something like sales.
00:08:33
Speaker
I wanted to close 20 deals in my first month.
00:08:35
Speaker
That was my goal, especially after I heard that product pitch.
00:08:39
Speaker
I had a lot to prove here.
00:08:41
Speaker
And when I was told four deals, my heart was broken.
00:08:46
Speaker
I thought, if these guys can't close four deals and they're double my age, they have 15 years of experience, who am I to be able to do this as a 19-year-old kid dropped out of college that plays trumpet, right?
00:08:59
Speaker
Who's not even in sales.
00:09:00
Speaker
How the hell am I going to be able to do this?
00:09:03
Speaker
So,
00:09:31
Speaker
Get that scholarship reignited, right?
00:09:33
Speaker
Start going back to school.
00:09:34
Speaker
Don't throw away your talents with trumpet, all that you've worked for.
00:09:38
Speaker
Why are you throwing this away for sales and business and something that you've never done before?
00:09:42
Speaker
Why would you do this?
00:09:45
Speaker
Me and your dad, we didn't raise somebody who quits.
00:09:48
Speaker
You quit something that you worked so hard for on something that we don't do.
00:09:52
Speaker
The Swiderisky family, we don't sell.
00:09:54
Speaker
We don't do business.
00:09:56
Speaker
We don't do any of this entrepreneurship stuff.
00:09:58
Speaker
It's too risky.
00:10:00
Speaker
James, you're going to go through hard times.
00:10:01
Speaker
You're going to do this, this, this.
00:10:03
Speaker
You're never going to be able to make it on this.
00:10:05
Speaker
This is what my own parents told me.
00:10:09
Speaker
So when your wife, you come home late at night and your wife asked if you made a sale and you said no again for that,
00:10:16
Speaker
sixth, seventh week in a row, believe me what I know it's like to feel that gut feeling of anxiety, of fear, of sadness.
00:10:25
Speaker
I know what it's like.

Facing Skepticism and Self-Doubt

00:10:27
Speaker
And this is just you and me talking here.
00:10:30
Speaker
The challenges in solar are real.
00:10:32
Speaker
Challenges in sales and life are real.
00:10:35
Speaker
I faced a lot of those challenges early on.
00:10:38
Speaker
And because of those challenges and pushing through, they're where I'm at today.
00:10:43
Speaker
So when you come home after appointments, and believe me, I did.
00:10:45
Speaker
I came home day after day, working my tail off eight, nine, 10 hours a day, driving in traffic, right?
00:10:52
Speaker
All of this stuff.
00:10:54
Speaker
And I come home and my parents say the same thing.
00:10:57
Speaker
Did you sell anything?
00:10:59
Speaker
If not, when are you going to give up?
00:11:02
Speaker
When are you going to throw in the towel on this?
00:11:04
Speaker
Go back to school?
00:11:05
Speaker
Get a part-time job?
00:11:06
Speaker
You got to move out of my basement, James.
00:11:08
Speaker
How are you going to do this with this sales thing?
00:11:11
Speaker
And I felt severe anxiety to the point in where one day, three months into my career, I came home from an appointment.
00:11:18
Speaker
I was coming home from an appointment rather.
00:11:21
Speaker
And my arms started to numb up, started to get a shortness of breath.
00:11:26
Speaker
My chest was tight and I couldn't see.
00:11:29
Speaker
My vision started blurring.
00:11:30
Speaker
So I pulled over, right?
00:11:31
Speaker
Freaking out.
00:11:33
Speaker
And I had to call the 911, right?
00:11:35
Speaker
And had an emergency truck, right?
00:11:37
Speaker
Come take me to the ER.
00:11:40
Speaker
And I thought I was going to die.
00:11:41
Speaker
right?
00:11:42
Speaker
I'd never experienced anything like this.
00:11:44
Speaker
Turns out it was just an anxiety attack.
00:11:47
Speaker
A little too much time without sleep, a little too much caffeine, way too much stress, took a toll on the body and boom, wiped out.
00:11:57
Speaker
And I'll never forget, I'm talking to the guy in the ambulance, right?
00:12:01
Speaker
Talking to the medic there and I'm starting to calm down just a little bit, right?
00:12:06
Speaker
I can breathe again.
00:12:07
Speaker
He's got me strapped up to a machine.
00:12:08
Speaker
I'm talking to the guy and he says,
00:12:10
Speaker
what kind of stress are you going through right now, man?
00:12:13
Speaker
He's like, I could see it in your eyes.
00:12:15
Speaker
He's like, you are the most stressed kid I have ever seen in my life.
00:12:20
Speaker
I said, man, dude, I just started selling and I gave him the whole story.
00:12:26
Speaker
I said, this is all the things I'm going through, man.
00:12:28
Speaker
My mom doesn't believe in me.
00:12:29
Speaker
I'm having a hard time, man, overcoming these things.
00:12:34
Speaker
And we just had a good conversation about it and nothing came from it.
00:12:38
Speaker
And I
00:12:39
Speaker
Guys, that is the lowest point of the low.
00:12:42
Speaker
And when I got back from the ER that evening, I made a commitment.
00:12:47
Speaker
I said, enough is enough with this.
00:12:49
Speaker
I'm going to figure this out.
00:12:50
Speaker
Because my personality, the one thing I've got going for me at this time, right, was I don't give up.
00:12:56
Speaker
When I put my mind on something, I will go until death to complete it.
00:12:59
Speaker
Okay?
00:13:02
Speaker
And that's what I did.
00:13:03
Speaker
I said, this is it.
00:13:04
Speaker
I'm going balls to the wall.
00:13:05
Speaker
I'm doing whatever it takes.
00:13:07
Speaker
I'm going to seek out the mentors, the books, buy the courses, do whatever it takes to become the number one sales professional in my office here.
00:13:15
Speaker
So what happened?
00:13:17
Speaker
We fast forward another two months, no sales.
00:13:20
Speaker
Top guy with getting leads, but I didn't know how to close, didn't know how to present.
00:13:24
Speaker
I had that drive.
00:13:25
Speaker
That work ethic was back.
00:13:27
Speaker
I was studying my ass off, reading from all of the grades, but I still wasn't seeing any results.
00:13:34
Speaker
I no longer cared about what my parents told me.
00:13:37
Speaker
I ignored them.
00:13:37
Speaker
I shoved that out of the way.
00:13:39
Speaker
I said, I'm not listening to anyone else.
00:13:41
Speaker
I know what is possible.
00:13:42
Speaker
I know what I am capable of.
00:13:45
Speaker
So what

Mentorship and Success

00:13:47
Speaker
happens?
00:13:47
Speaker
Where's the pinnacle moment here?
00:13:49
Speaker
When did we get out of this hole?
00:13:51
Speaker
We had this event, it was a large event that we had for the company and we invited everybody through all out the state, right?
00:13:59
Speaker
The New York office, the Carolina, South Carolina office, Connecticut.
00:14:04
Speaker
We invited all these people out to talk about, you know, how to improve the business, how to get better at sales.
00:14:10
Speaker
And I'll never forget at the street, I met my first real mentor in my life and to keep his privacy, he's a private guy, I'm gonna call him John, okay?
00:14:20
Speaker
So I meet John, he's a big guy, he comes and talks to me, and he says, James, here's what I know about you, man.
00:14:27
Speaker
I know you're the guy who, you're the youngest kid in the entire company's history, right?
00:14:32
Speaker
By a long shot.
00:14:34
Speaker
You don't give up, you're not making sales, you're getting more leads than anybody, but you can't close anything.
00:14:38
Speaker
I wanna talk to you.
00:14:40
Speaker
And John saw something in me, he saw potential in me that day that nobody else had in my entire life.
00:14:46
Speaker
Yes, a little in music, but nobody had sat down with me
00:14:49
Speaker
and told me, John told me, James, I know you're gonna do big things in solar.
00:14:54
Speaker
I know you are.
00:14:54
Speaker
This is why we're talking.
00:14:56
Speaker
Little did I know that John was actually the number one producer in not just this company, but he was a broker for many other solar companies, including SolarCity, who he was working with for 20 plus years, okay?
00:15:08
Speaker
He worked with them from the ground up, SolarCity.
00:15:11
Speaker
He was one of the top guys, and he showed me, what he showed me that day changed everything.
00:15:16
Speaker
Next to belief in me,
00:15:18
Speaker
He showed me belief in what was possible in solar.
00:15:23
Speaker
I asked him point blank, how much money are you making with solar?
00:15:26
Speaker
Is this even worth it?
00:15:27
Speaker
And what he showed me was amazing.
00:15:29
Speaker
He whipped out his commission thing, right?
00:15:31
Speaker
This commission sheet chart.
00:15:33
Speaker
And he showed me all of the cash that was sitting here with commercial residential projects.
00:15:38
Speaker
He had millions of dollars in deals coming through.
00:15:42
Speaker
He showed me his bank balance.
00:15:44
Speaker
He showed me his bank balance with over 700 grand in savings, okay?
00:15:48
Speaker
Not even just his main checking account.
00:15:51
Speaker
Me, growing up in a middle-class family, I'd never even seen $7,000 in a bank account, let alone $700,000.
00:15:59
Speaker
That belief, as you can imagine, light bulb moment.
00:16:03
Speaker
Changed everything.
00:16:04
Speaker
Just like the emergency room chip, that changed everything because now I had the belief in myself right after the emergency room thing, but now I had the belief in the industry and what was possible.
00:16:16
Speaker
These two things unlocked the
00:16:18
Speaker
what James Swiderski is today.
00:16:20
Speaker
So fast forward, I worked with John.
00:16:22
Speaker
The next 30 days, I closed my first nine contracts.
00:16:26
Speaker
Instantly became the top producer in the Salt Lake City team, right?
00:16:30
Speaker
Nine contracts, 12, 15, 20, 25, 40 plus contracts.
00:16:36
Speaker
These were the numbers that happened in the subsequent months coming after working with John, having him show me the ropes and having that belief in myself and the belief in the company go together.
00:16:46
Speaker
Now,
00:16:47
Speaker
What you'll realize here is back up a little bit after that emergency room moment, I had two, three months here of just studying and working my ass off.
00:16:56
Speaker
And I really was for six months, but I didn't make any money in those moments.
00:17:00
Speaker
But believe me, when I say those moments of working, putting in the grind every day, ignoring what my parents were saying, those paid off big time.
00:17:11
Speaker
Nobody becomes successful and rich slowly, okay?
00:17:15
Speaker
It's all a hockey stick curve.
00:17:18
Speaker
That's what get rich quick gets, is that hockey stick curve.
00:17:21
Speaker
Six months of no deals, boom, struggle, grind, grind, grind, boom, up to the point where I made over $1.2 million in commissions, over $8 million in sales in less than nine months.
00:17:36
Speaker
All because of belief in myself, belief in what was possible in Soler.
00:17:43
Speaker
So guys, I don't share these things with you to impress you.
00:17:46
Speaker
It's far from impressive.
00:17:48
Speaker
There's a reason I haven't shared this story with people before.
00:17:51
Speaker

00:17:52
Speaker
It gets very emotional for me.
00:17:54
Speaker
If you can't tell them this, I'm getting pretty passionate right now.
00:17:57
Speaker
I get pretty fired up.
00:17:58
Speaker
I get pretty emotional right now.
