Introduction & Christmas Eve Greeting

00:00:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Liverpool Podcast brought to you by the Global Sports Podcast Network. I'm your host, Jesse Salva. It's Christmas Eve and all is quiet and peaceful in the world of Premier League football.

Boxing Day Football Teaser

00:00:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
Until Boxing Day that is because this is England and we will gorge ourselves on football over this festive period like no place else in the world. Liverpool will be entertaining Leicester City on Boxing Day and we'll have a preview of that game going out tomorrow.
00:00:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I wanted to spend a few minutes just talking a bit about Sunday's game against Spurs which is still fresh in all our minds.

Spurs Match Recap & Christmas Top Spot

00:00:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Fans and neutrals alike because it was just such an entertaining game and I suppose entertaining football is great when you come away with three points as the Reds did to keep that top spot over Christmas.
00:01:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I wanted to talk about a couple of players that really stood out. Now obviously Lewis Diaz and Mohammed Salah got most of the plaudits and rightly so, most outlets gave the man of the match award to one of those two and as I said that was richly deserved.

Luis Diaz's Impact & Team Dynamics

00:01:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Lewis Diaz was at his energetic best is whirlwind of pressing and dribbling and creativity. He just never lets the opposition backline rest and is really becoming that focal point up front in terms of our press. Much like Bobby Firmino was once described by Jürgen Klopp as our system, such was his influence. I'm wondering if Luis Diaz now is becoming just as important to Arnie Slott
00:02:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
He has that similar unselfish attitude that Firminio had. He'll sacrifice himself for the team, run himself into the ground, create space for the likes of Salah and other teammates. But I think where Diaz is even more of a threat than even Firminio is his pace.
00:02:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Firminio's game wasn't about pace, it was about guile, game intelligence, reading the game, finding pockets of space.

Salah's Record-Breaking Feats

00:02:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
yeah Diaz has all of that with pace. So I think he's given slot another great option in that number nine spot.
00:02:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
It could even be that Jota and Diaz are the main two players who are vying for that central position up front with Darwin Nunez either dropping down the pecking order or maybe competing for that left attacking position with Cody Gackpo.
00:02:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I thought Diaz was outstanding, as was Mohammed Salah. I mean, what can we say about Salah that hasn't already been said? And we're just saying it it every week now. He's breaking records consistently every game, every week. He's gone ahead of Thierry Henry in the Premier League all-time goals list.

The Ballon d'Or Snub Discussion

00:03:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
He's actually gone ahead of him on both both goals and assists in less games. So Henri netted 228 times, providing 93 assists in 377 games. Salah scored 229 goals.
00:03:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
who's he's now fourth in the all-time Liverpool FC goal-scoring charts 103 assists and 373 games absolutely phenomenal and to top it all I think he's still the most underrated player in world football How has this man never won the Ballon d'Or? I mean, the award has fast become a joke over the last few years, and his exclusion over the better part of a decade only proves to illustrate that point further.

Szoboszlai's Rising Influence

00:04:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But there are a couple of other players that I wanted to talk about, and they are really the focus of this podcast. We'll do that as soon as we have this very short break.
00:04:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Dominic Sibozlai has often divided opinion with some of the fan base. There is a perception that he doesn't do enough in terms of goals and assists, but he is a slot regular. He's more often than not in that starting lineup.
00:04:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that's because he offers Arne Slott the energy, the dynamism, the work rate that he needs in order to successfully implement his tactical plan from that midfield area. Now that may not be sexy, it may not produce headlines and clicks on social media much in the same way that ah midfield under Jurgen Klopp, the likes of Jordan Henderson, Gini Wijnaldum,
00:05:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
um they weren't, you know, kind of um these ah kinds of players that get all the pollaudits, but there's a reason why Klopp trusted those players. And there's a reason why Slott trusts Dominic Suboslai. And the reason why he's consistently in that midfield position,
00:05:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
But recently however, the and the Spurs game was probably probably the best example, he's starting to contribute goals and assists and really looks more of a threat going forward. I think his decision making in that final third is improving as well, as is his relationship with those forward players, um I think most notably Muhammad Salah. The goal that he scored against Spurs was one of my favorite goals of that game and of this season, which is saying something because we've scored a fair few goals this season, a season that sees us top of the Premier League top of the Champions League, and in the semi finals with the League Cup.
00:06:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
But the way that Sir Boslai first won that aerial duel in the middle of the park to flick ah the ball into the path of Muhammad Salah. And then instead of just admiring that flick on, he follows it up by racing into the box to offer Salah an option and give the defence something more to think about. And, you know, the clinical finish at the end, just icing on the cake.
00:06:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
So I think Sir Bosley has been really, really impressive and I think really important for us. And I think if he can carry on this form, he can be a real difference maker for this season. Okay, time for another very quick break.
00:07:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
The other play I want to mention is Joe Gomez. Now regular regular listeners, I should say, of this podcast will know very well that I am a huge fan of our longest serving player. In fact, I had him down as our Player of the Year last year. He's reliable, no nonsense. He's professional. He'll play at centre back, at left back, at right back, wherever the team needs him to perform. And to do a job, he'll do it and he'll do it without fuss. All in a day's work.
00:07:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
But to see him in the heart of that defense alongside Captain Virgil van Dyck, it was the return of that champion back five of Alison, Trent, Gomez, van Dyck, and Robertson that won every major prize at club level. So for me, it was great to see gomaz Gomez back to his best. And he will still be, I think, much needed for the rest of this season.
00:08:17
Global Sports Podcast Network
um with Canate's continued absence from

Joe Gomez's Defensive Mastery

00:08:22
Global Sports Podcast Network
the team and no doubt he'll be needed throughout what will be a gruelling season to plug those gaps in that back line. um There were a couple of um transfer rumours or one I should say that has been doing the rounds and that is Christian Pulisic at AC Milan.
00:08:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know where this has come from, but so in the last couple of days, there's been a lot of talk in the Italian press that AC Milan are putting together a new package to convince Pulisic that his future is at the San Siro in Italy.
00:09:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
because apparently Liverpool are one of his admirers and Arnie Slott and sporting director Richard Hughes see him as a potential target.
00:09:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know whether whether there's truth in this. I don't know whether this is maybe come from the Pulisic camp to ah use as a kind of bargaining tool ah for a better contract because Pulisic I think is a good player. I think he's a very very good player and he was actually on Liverpool's radar ah when Klopp was the manager with

Transfer Rumors: Christian Pulisic

00:09:43
Global Sports Podcast Network
those Borussia Dortmund links. But he does have a very, very, what can I say, unconvincing ah track record when it comes to fitness and injuries. And given that the only transfer activity that Liverpool were involved in last summer was the signing of Federico Chiesa,
00:10:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
um from another Italian club Juventus this time and given that he has hardly featured at all this season I'd be surprised if Liverpool went in for Pulisic unless unless the price is ridiculously low but again I can't see that happening so that's just a rumor that's doing the round um That is all for today. Just a short episode this Christmas Eve and I'd like to wish all our listeners the happiest of holidays over this festive period. Good will to all and let's hope that we all have a peaceful holiday. The world could do with some. Until next time.
