What was worse? The Netflix broadcast for Opening Night or the Giants's performance? That might actually be a hard question to answer. Liam's beloved Yankees keep the tradition of having an amazing start while Andrew's Giants have a historically terrible start. How long can the Yankees's success last? When will the Giants get themselves out of this tailspin?

Hello, welcome to the Two Front War, bi-weekly podcast covering the Giants and Yankees 2026 season. I'm Andrew, and with me as always is Leon. Hi, Liam. Hello, Andrew.
00:00:20
Speaker
Hello, folks at home. How's your two weeks going? Fine. I have training next week, and then I don't work for the week after that. And then the week after that, I only work two two days. That's lot of time for baseball. You know what? Now that you put it like that, I'm happy. I look at my bank account, I'm not happy. I look at baseball, it makes me happy.

Season Start and Avoiding Hot Takes

00:00:39
Speaker
Yeah, don't don't look at that account. Don't think about the debts and things that you owe.
00:00:43
Speaker
I kind of got it. All your insurances. I don't got to worry about the debt. I got those automatic payments. Hey. So one day it's just there and then the next day it's just not there. Don't do the math to figure out how much you're actually paying per month. I know exactly how much I'm paying per month. I said it. That's sad. It's like it's just it's just a nice flat whole number. That's fine.
00:01:03
Speaker
So we seem to have, just like the first season, two very different experiences. ah Yeah, I'm playing it down because everyone's so gung-ho, so happy right now. I'm playing it down because they always start out hot. But for you, I think the same thing ah that you've been. but're Not the same thing with me, just the same thing that you've come to expect. Oh, yeah, a little bit. I just didn't expect it to happen so soon. Yeah, I was especially after last. time I was kind of

Opening Game and Broadcast Issues

00:01:31
Speaker
expecting you guys to have like a hot streak, maybe take a game from us. But um it is rough. The Giants are trying me right now. They're really, really trying me because before the season started, whenever we were texting about like, hey, do we come back? Right. I was like, hey, one of the things I'm going to do for the season is not do hot takes because everyone does hot takes on, you know, online where they're just like, bla get rid of everyone.
00:01:51
Speaker
Right. I'm like, I'm not going to do it. And I did not expect to be tested so soon. Until now. So let's get started. Opening day or opening night rather. That's the only game being played. Yankees Giants. On Netflix. On Netflix in San Francisco. We should have known that things were going to go wrong when Thing failed to do the ceremonial first pitch. I really want to know how they were going to do that. But something went when we wrong with the robot. Yeah. And could not do the pitch. Should have had a Boston Dynamics on standby.
00:02:20
Speaker
Yeah. I think like the, you know, the discussion for that game, despite the ah somehow more than the blowout was just how bad the Netflix broadcast was. The score bug was tiny. I have it for that game. They didn't have the count. We missed the the first ABS challenge. We miss a whole lot.

Player Performance Analysis

00:02:36
Speaker
Just I don't know what it is with when you're not watching your team like on their broadcast. It's like it's kind of like regardless of the team, right? If you're watching on a national broadcast or Netflix or Apple or whatever, They want to show you everything but the game. It definitely felt like that here. We had like a comedian in the stands doing a bit. Doing bits. yeah We needed w WWE synergy, so Jey Uso and Jacob Fatu came out. Two people I'm not very hot on.
00:03:00
Speaker
but We watched Luffy in the McCovey Cove. We watched... We watched McCovey Cove instead of an actual at-bat being had. Yeah. Some people just fishing thought that was more important. Yeah.
00:03:11
Speaker
I mean, know it was a blowout, but like, come on, I gotta watch my team just get blown out, you know? So yeah, that was, uh, that was rough. Just this game one. we start, uh, we start with you. It's, uh, ends with a Yankee sweep of the giants. All I put for game one was thwomp and seven, seven, no, I can talk of, I talk a little bit more about, ah some of the more uninteresting elements than just like offense happening. Game one, Stanton changed his, his stance. He's leaning back on his back leg and kind of like jolting forward a little bit more. Mm-hmm. Which is good for, i think I think I put down for this series, he went 500, which is a six for 12 in at-bats. So it was a welcome change.
00:03:45
Speaker
The broadcast was just super distracting. I hated all the the brand synergy they had to have. Yeah, that was like game one is going to be real hard to talk about for both of us because it's like well it was it was super one sided. The broadcast was awful and it it felt like entertainment for the second screen, which is kind of like Netflix's M.O., but it it's baseball. You're supposed to be passing the time while watching it. Yeah, it's that was that was a bad broadcast. So bad.
00:04:12
Speaker
Oh, man. My notes for game one for, well, I just start with with highlights. ah There were no highlights. Yeah. They lost 0-7 and they only got three hits despite getting freebies from hit by pitches. And for that first game, it was Chapman and Willie Adamas were the only ones to make it to third base.
00:04:30
Speaker
won Yeah. So then we have a a day off. Actually, do you have anything else about game one? No, not much to talk about game one. Okay, I got it. was looking

Managerial Decisions and Player Training

00:04:39
Speaker
forward to a real broadcast after that, but then I was like, oh, they're off the next day. Yeah. I don't know. I think I ended up watching, like, ah I think I watched Blue Moon. Yeah, I got i got my lowlights for game one. The entire night, things started off strong with Matt Chapman. well With Matt Chapman reaching first on the fielder's choice, an aggressive race running gave me false hope that the game would be exciting. Fortunately, that was the most exciting the Giants office was going to be.
00:05:02
Speaker
On top of that, Logan Webb had a meltdown in the second inning, giving up five runs and would give up the final two of the game in the fifth. Giants struck out six times compared to the Yankees' 11. With a completely neutered Aaron Judge, it was unbelievable the team did not manage to score once. You to talk about Aaron Judge in game one? I guess the whole series, really. People were talking on Aaron Judge first game because he went 0 for 4. First time he's done that ever on opening day. He was like, oh my god, Aaron Judge could back. But he came back game two and was fine. ah good Really? He homered game two. Yeah, but I found his whole series to be lackluster, despite the homers. Did he have one or two? Yeah, I think he had two good solar home runs game three, fifth inning. I don't know. I still expect him at least get on base. Like, i don't know. It just seems with Aaron Judge, you know, it seems like, you know, two homers the whole series. I'm fine with it. It was a welcome change to see everyone else in in the lineup kind of do well without him because. Yeah, that's this true. I'm still emotionally reeling from all those seasons where it's like if Judge goes down, this team sucks. Yeah, like, okay. Which means the team sucks. Yeah, Josh didn't get a hit, so that means it's we're game one, under normal circumstances, you're like, oh, we're going lose. He struck out five, or not five times, he struck out like, what, three times or whatever. He went 0 for 5 that first game. 0 for 5? Oh, damn. Yeah. I guess I missed an at-bat somewhere in there. Yeah.
00:06:19
Speaker
So we have the day off. We go to game two. Schlit on the mound, bro. Yeah, it was Max Fried the first one, right? Yes. Then we go to Schlitter? Schlitler. Shit Hitler. Yeah.
00:06:33
Speaker
All right, what did you catch for that one? Schlittler had visually probably the better outing. I'll tell you right now, I gave my MVP to Freed just because he went longer with 6.1 innings pitch, two hits, one walk, zero runs, one hit by pitch, four strikeouts.
00:06:50
Speaker
uh schlittler's final line for game two a 5.1 innings pitch one hit eight k's on 68 pitches i'll probably give it to him if they have these same two addings in a different series but breed really kind of set the tone which is what i really like and schlittler kind of has like training wheels on pulling them after like before even 70 pitches which it's it's it's It's fine for now. you know You don't want to tire a kid out in a sophomore stint with the team right away. But it's just a whole whole tone setter. It was a boring game, but really you know puts things in motion. It sets up the expectations for later on.
00:07:25
Speaker
ah Other stuff happened in game two. Aaron Judge has his first home run of the season. Stanton homers won one at bat later. Belly broke him up later in the sixth. substitutions made substitutions because uh once san francisco went to the bullpen things really started moving so we're like all right let's make our defensive switch outs for the bullpen pieces we're expected to see mcmahon went in for rosario at third and then grisham came in for getrick i want to uh we talked about him last episode just veteran i have no familiarity with and a lot of yankees fans don't seem to have familiarity with because i can't get a breakdown of this guy anywhere Don't know if he's more of a defensive substitution or an offensive to so substitution. I think he's only coming in when facing a certain kind of pitcher. But Grisham moved over to center field after Getrick was in left. So I think Bailey moved from a center to left between the two. And other than that, it was just kind of business as usual. Another relative thwomping game too. Yeah.
00:08:18
Speaker
My notes for game two. There are no notes for game two. I wrote, yikes. This is for the first time in Giants franchise history. It's like, what, 143, 144 years.
00:08:30
Speaker
The Giants have been shut out in the first two games on opening day or opening week. Game three could also be a franchise first. Spoiler alert. It was 18 scoreless innings and one hit, which was Ramos double.
00:08:42
Speaker
Giants were one for 28 in the game Robbie Ray started was the starter. He gave up an understandable two-run homer to judge before being pulled, and Butto comes in, ah who's now on the injured list, and immediately gave up a solo homer to stand and then was pulled. Walker came in. He allowed two runners before getting pulled. Borucki walked them loaded and then cut out of the inning as a giant struck out 13 times. That's a lot.
00:09:05
Speaker
Yeah, that's... Good for me. Yeah. i One of the worst starts. Yeah. I can only be so disappointed. where We're kind of ah know starting off on a hot streak. but if I should ask my question later, but what are we thinking of managerial decisions so far? Are there a lot of managerial moves being made? i think that that's the thing that kind of like has been standing out is the lack of moves. the The bench, the series, actually so far, really has not been utilized all that much.
00:09:37
Speaker
And then when it did get used, when when there were moves getting done, they were interesting to say the least, but that's a ah discussion for for Padres, the Padres ah ah series.
00:09:47
Speaker
Good. But yeah, like I think for these first three, like there's there were hardly any any moves I can take a look at. my uh scorecard here because i torture myself by watching the giants baseball keep track of the you know the scorecards let's see yankees yankee that's game one game two yeah the only oh no it was it was yankees it was during the yankees game uh there was only one managerial move as far as like the lineup goes that was i believe in the ninth yeah in the ninth inning willie adams gets pinch run for jared oliva
00:10:21
Speaker
Willie Thomas says that was the first time in his career that he was pinch run for. People were saying that he was not happy about it. i It was lost already. So whatever. there's There's no coming back at that point, so might as well try something now, but maybe it's a little too late. don't know. Willy is fast, so that that is an interesting move for someone who's even faster.
00:10:40
Speaker
How did that end? It ended with the double play, with all of i getting being involved, getting forced out at second. Then we move on to game three. Game three. Congratulations, Ryan.
00:10:52
Speaker
Ryan. Ryan. who I don't know. I just put down Ryan. Who is Ryan in this game? um I'm looking down to Ryan Weathers. No, that got go back up. Rice is who I actually want to congratulate. Editor, cut that fart out. That's embarrassing as fuck. Ben Rice, two-run double in the third. Kind of starts things off offensively and then Judge Solo homers in the fifth. We Bill Warren gets out of some tough situations and I put down that he has a point ah two ERA. I think he has a one ERA, only one run let up. But the two big things this game was four double plays, some nice gritty baseball, six four threes, and Aaron Boone, his seven hundredth career win
00:11:26
Speaker
nice as manager I find myself not having much to to say about the series as a whole. It's just everyone, you know, kind of getting back to business as usual so all the New York sports writers can put their big headlines up. Mm-hmm. All that kind of stuff. The Yagos are the greatest Rachel Fairchild of all time and all that. People aren't really mad at Boone so far. If they are, it's just kind of like standard, like, sports Twitter. Mm-hmm.
00:11:47
Speaker
kind of talk, but he's making smart substitutions when there needs to be and smart bullpen calls. That'll be consistent throughout the other two series that I'm going to be talking about. So new discussion to be had. Aaron Boone goaded? question mark Controversial? Controversial. Just to round out, my LVP for the series, Randall Gritchuk, he went 0 for 2 in the one game he was in, and I don't know him, so...
00:12:09
Speaker
two ah i like that that that that's that's why That's my automatic LVP. Where's Spencer Jones? Where's the Martian? For me, my notes for game of three, I wrote, well, this has been a wet fart of an opening series. The Giants broke 142, 143 year long streak, not being shut out in the first two games of the season, they finished by being swept by the Yankees. They finally scored their first run after 20 scoreless innings. who The worst thing about this series is that showcased what the Giants baseball can be at its absolute worst. When you look at this lineup on paper, they should be shelling the other side. that The curse of getting superstars and having them not perform continues.
00:12:39
Speaker
And this isn't, you know, three game day dooming. It's just bad. This is just bad. You look up and you don't really see anything over the horizon with these guys right now. No. And hopefully this is just Tina starts slow facing team known for having consistently hot starts for the series for the highlights for game two. I had no highlights for game three. My highlight was Elliot Ramos because he battled. He had some battles is this game. In the first inning, he had a 10 pitch at bat that. OK, yeah, sure. did Did it end with an inning ending strikeout? Sure.
00:13:06
Speaker
Hey, but you know what? 10 pitches in the first inning. Devastating for a pitcher, I feel like. And then later on, he had a nine pitch at bat that also had another inning, ground out. But hey, it's still get those those pitch counts up.
00:13:17
Speaker
And then after that, he got a hit and a walk. Also so put Lee as a highlight. He started the second with a double and he was the first run this season and the only one for the series. My MVP for game one, none.
00:13:27
Speaker
None. no team There's none. For game two, i put Robbie Gray. Even though that game was a loss, it should not have, it should not, I i mean, his pitching on paper was was great. He was wild. He was struggling and he somehow managed to figure it out towards the end of his his outing there. But he went 5.1 in his pitch, giving up five hits, two earned runs, no walks, one strikeout and one home run. My LVP for game one, it hurts me. I put Logan Webb for that implosion. Five innings pitched, nine hits, seven runs, six of them earned, one walk, and seven strikeouts.
00:13:58
Speaker
Those hits, they just the ball just found the holes. That's really what it did it. My LVP for game one, on that's oh game LVP for game two and three on the pitching side, I put none. I didn't think that there was any pitcher that was doing notably you know terrible.
00:14:13
Speaker
You're giving out MVPs, LVPs left and right. you got just like not Not here, you don't really got something to dish out, but it's like you're ready to give them out every game. yeah yo yeah and doing I'm doing them by games now because I feel like last year, we are the first season, we didn't really.
00:14:28
Speaker
I was like, well, do I want to do it for the whole series or do I want to do it for each game? was like, know, to do for each game. That's interesting. Yeah. I did it for just series, but I'll look and I'll look and see because I feel like I want to highlight some more people. Yeah, I wanted to do it just because it felt was like, well, someone has to do that. And sometimes there is anyone that does that. Someone's got to do it.
00:14:46
Speaker
Sometimes sometimes you you lose. It's like, oh, like you didn't, you know, team loses. It's like, well, nobody was. it was a team effort. Nobody did notably worse than anyone else. But for game one, li Lee, who was my OEP. ah He went 0 for 4. He failed to bring in runners on third twice. In the first inning, Chapman on third, two outs, 4-3 ground out. And in the ninth inning, Willie on third, lines out to center. Game two, I put the entire lineup. Notably, Devers and Adames struck out three times each. Game three, none other than ah left on base problems. Also, it should be noted that ah Jose Butto is on the IL, 15-day IL. I think it was originally reported as like some sort of shoulder soreness. Ended up being a blood clot. More controversy around the World Baseball Classic. Apparently, the Giants were not too keen on letting him um you know pitch for that. Yeah, I heard about that. and This injury happens, but I think we already talked about it. The first episode, I'm of the belief that like it's not going to be hurting people that bad.
00:15:37
Speaker
All right. Who'd you for series two? What I have for series two? The Mariners. I was in a different tab. Let's hope I got that right. Yeah. The Mariners. I know what I'm talking about. watch baseball. Mariners. Okay. Seattle, big dumper. Big dumper.
00:15:49
Speaker
Big dumper. Yeah. He didn't have a good series. Not having a good go at it so far, but we'll, we'll talk about that progressively. Once again, I don't have much to say about game one, but this is where the congratulations Ryan comes in because I had no faith in Ryan Weathers last episode, but he didn't, he didn't, he made out good. He didn't go, he didn't go bad. Only one earned run, seven strikeouts, two walks. He only goes like four innings and one out, but that's really freaking good. It's very slow, very little action. And Paul Blackburn had a bad appearance, but we still pull away with the game. So big dubs. This is, I think, this series, I'll just cover it now. The tweet went viral in the Yankee circle of just a gif and the caption, my gritty, small ball, defensive, heavy, minimal home run hitting Yankees. Because that's kind of how the Yankees are are doing runs right now. Home runs aren't like the only offense we're seeing. It's a lot of like, Oh my gosh, Bases clearing double with two on and Yankees are on the board plus two.
00:16:45
Speaker
It's kind of the deal we're going with. okay yeah I feel like those kind of hits do more damage to a pitcher psyche than it's dying a home run. I think it does. I also think it it depends on the player, but yeah. Also, maybe for for a fan base, too, when you got like that one out, you know runners on the corners looking for that, you know, inning, ending double play instead bases clearing double.
00:17:07
Speaker
It's like, oh, that that sucks because now we got another guy in scoring position. And then there's another guy on the plate. Yeah. Yeah. Another guy in scoring position. And because you're waiting for that ground ball pitch count through the roof, just nibbling on the edges, got one out, runner scoring position. Basic could either score or sack can score. it's like, ah, that's just, eh. You just start thinking about that pitch count.
00:17:27
Speaker
At least I do. I'm always thinking about that pitch count sometimes when I'm, I think after playing the show, because then I'm like, oh, it's I got like the meter in the corner and whatever. got like pull this guy out now. Mm-hmm. You know, feel like right hand versus left hand does anything in the games or for the pitcher. Yeah, just ah in the games. Do they have like actual like, yeah, they keep track of just yeah, just like maybe some background stat that's like, you know, messing up the bloom and all that. Yeah, it keeps track of like a character's like a batter's average against lefties. And a playing the show like, yeah, when you're ready facing off against the lefty, it's like, e everything feels off. and The ball never seems to go where you think it's gonna go. Yeah. That was game one. Ryan Rutherford's not that bad. Game two, it was two oh for the Yankees from the first all the way to the sixth off a RBI Ben Rice double and a Stanton single. ah Freed goes on the mound and goes for seven with three hits, one one walk, six strikeouts, no runs come over. Cal picks off Belly. Cal Raleigh picked off Bellinger in the second and the third. There was an E2 on Cal later on in the sixth inning that brings Grisham home, so... Another add, another run added to the board for my guys. Cal Raleigh not having a good start to the season, really, whether it be at the plate or behind the dish. if You're definitely going to be keeping track of that. I definitely will. he was He was neck and neck with my guy. Everyone salty a hell. And had a bad WBC, if I remember correctly, too. did So he's not going all that all that good. He gets replaced by Will Smith in the last game. did He did. i forgot about that. He got benched for Will Smith. Was he DH-ing or did he come into pinch hit at all? No, he's benched. I just remember you Team USA not winning. Yeah, well, you know. That's all you really have to remember. I think ah the manager had a good hand in making sure we lost. Yes. It's going to be interesting next WBC because I don't think he's getting invited back. No, absolutely not. Absolutely Sinton, RBI double, same inning, scores one, and takes Gilbert out. Who's Gilbert on Seattle? We were talking about... Logan Gilbert. Okay, we were talking about Drew Gilbert before we started recording. Yeah, I got confused for a second. like, Logan Gilbert was pitching this game, and he did not do good.
00:19:29
Speaker
Final score for this game, I'm being told 5-0. Now I'm being told 5-0, I wrote it down. see seattle only gets It's second hit in the seventh inning. Pitching for the Yankees went Freed, Hedrick. Is it Hedrick or Hedtick? I misspelling people's names and all that. Over to Tim Hill. And everyone was kind of flawless today for game two.
00:19:47
Speaker
Game three is where I really start yapping. So if you have any questions, let's ah you can I'll let you put them in now. No, no, no no no questions just right now. Lowlights is the offense. You can talk about game three first if you want.
00:19:59
Speaker
Yeah. ah Feel free to yap. Feel free to yap. I'll talk about two lowlights real quick. Ryan McMahon goes 0 for 7 this entire series. he gets He gets pulled. They're like, all right, game three.
00:20:10
Speaker
let's Let's sit you down for a little bit, bud. And Duvall also wasn't all that hot, but I think I'll have more to talk about him in the next series. I heard about his appearance in the the last series.
00:20:23
Speaker
I have a funny joke, but ill i'll save that I'll save that for later. Game three. At the start of the game, Stanton Judge are the only two Yankees with home runs. That changes up as Ben Rice joins the club. He's DH-ing over Stanton. They're only playing Stanton a certain number of games in a row before they rest him. as the whole He can't open a bag of chips anymore. Yeah, being being her kind of thing.
00:20:44
Speaker
I hear the actual article, the full article is sad, but my oh my grandpa sent me the full, it's behind a paywall. My grandpa has a subscription to the thing, but his password is wrong and I haven't had the heart to tell him yet. You could probably use like internet archive. Something like that, yeah.
00:20:58
Speaker
Yeah, to get past it. And Goldie's playing first, so it's get it gets two of them in. I think they're bats against this pitcher just for that. And maybe Goldie has better defense in in first, even still, even with his age, over Rice. Either way, he he gets two good bats in the lineup. Rice brings in Belly in the first. Rosario also plays over Ryan McMahon. at third base. Cal Raleigh and J-Rod are struggling so far, and Jazz gets picked off in a rundown in the fifth. he Oh, that's right. Yeah, that was the one where he's he's fixing his One Piece sliding glove.
00:21:30
Speaker
Yeah, the One Piece sliding glove. is Oh, that's so bad. Yeah, it was kind of corny as hell, especially since ah I know flat out he's just a One Piece fan legitimately, but also yeah Netflix game was last year. He's a Come on now. Yeah, Netflix game. Then they had a big One Piece ad. Yeah, that's the so that i online the game picked off. Dude, just stand on the base.
00:21:50
Speaker
I'm also messing up my grammar. I put a parentheses over Ryle and J. Rod. So I thought it was an aside that I was going to be talking about. Don't write your scripts once the game ends, bro. Go to sleep, Leo. Oh, I have to do it when the game ends. Otherwise, I'm going forget everything. At least look your stuff over. Damn. George Kirby has 6Ks going into the 6, and Goldie comes up and makes him pay for letting 2 on. For his 84th pitch, he takes him deep to go 4-0. Cal throws at Judge, trying go for 2nd to end the Yankees 8th. Duvall,.2 innings pitched. 1K, 2 hits, 1 walk, 2 earned runs, pulled to 4.
00:22:24
Speaker
The second scored, so Ben Arn inherits that guy. And he has to throw 40. That's 11 pitches in the inning he's inheriting and 29 in the ninth proper for 1.1 innings. One earned run he's credited with. That kind of ends things out, really. Cal has two RBI in the eighth.
00:22:41
Speaker
Rice solo homers in the ninth make it five two Can zone RBI single makes it five three Judge catches the pop-up to end the game proper. Judge catches the pop-up tying one of the plates. Yeah, they left a tiny run on the plate and runner on second. So it was just kind of, a you know, like gymnastics type of wire work coming down a little bit here. But you know what? We still made it through.
00:23:00
Speaker
We only dropped one, right? Yeah, we only dropped one. Honestly, things could have been a lot worse. Yes, they could. Yes, they could. So nice little, what do the kids say? Stunt on them? Stunt on them? You can say that, yeah. That's what it is. Stunt on the Mariners being like, oh, MVP versus MVP. And then Caldwell has a terrible game. If you're going to drop any game, it's a good thing it's the first one. And it's a good thing it was boring, so it's easy to forget. Okay. So are you a... Drop first game guy? Drop first game. Oh, interesting. Unless it's a home opener. I've seen enough home opening losses to the Red Sox over the years. For that to be like, all right, just, you know, you like it. It's a good morale thing. It's the tone setter and all that.
00:23:39
Speaker
But I feel like once once you drop the first and yeah you win the second, you immediately think, all right, we can get back on like a hot streak or whatever. that's interesting. because i feel the opposite you rather lose the last game yeah well no i think i i want to i like it's not that i want to win the last game or lose the last game it's i think winning the first game is really important because you just need one more win to win the series instead of because if you lose the first game you're like now we have to win two straight games but if you win the the first game and you lose the second one you're like well we can close it out on a high note i don't think you want to close it out on a a loss i think I think in the fashion we lost the first game, it was fine. It was like, okay you know, something boring, something slow. And honestly, there was enough like monotoniness.
00:24:19
Speaker
That's not a word, but I mean, monotony. There's enough monotony to like, is it like, all right, that was that game. You know, shake it off, go to the next one. What do you think about winning the first two games and punting the last one? I think it depends on how bad the last game's lost. Well, I guess it depends. Like, are you going to be using the last game as like, hey, we're going to, like a lot of dudes are going to be benched? Yeah, that that's that's usually what happens. Like in Yankees land, very different for you guys. You need all the wins you can get. Yeah, I think i think for that, I think you would just... If you're going to bench a a ton of dudes, I think that's fine to punt it like that. But but I think like ideally for me, it'd be for a three game series, win, loss, win.
00:24:56
Speaker
You know, assuming, I mean, obviously you want to sweep, but that's hard, especially for the Giants. So I think, I think losing the second game is the one that if I, if you're like, Oh, which one do you want to lose out of this three game series? Game two. Although game threes are usually day games and that's rough. Did you go over your highlights and piece for the series?
00:25:11
Speaker
uh, MVPs, uh, I'm going, I'm going Schlitler. He earned it, especially after last start he had. 7 Ks, you know, 6.1 innings, no walks, no runs. 79 pitches, kind of low, but you know, same deal as last time, all that. He put down 15 straight to close out the night. Sorry, you said what? He put down, uh, 15 straight guys to close out the night. That's awesome. 15 bodies down. That's awesome.
00:25:32
Speaker
LVP, I'm giving to McMahon because I think I'm giving it to Deval next series. I'll put that down right now. But yeah, LVP McMahon. Yeah, I wish I had more to talk about with the game one loss and all that. But I kind of kind of boring game first loss of the season. So there should be something substantial I come out of that. But I didn't really find myself. I thought there were two solid games they followed it up by against a team that is not looking like themselves from from last season. Is it just like ah it's like that loss is just something that's like you can't win every game? Kind of. we would like You can't win every game. You're going to lose some. This is like one that like, yeah, we lost, but it wasn't bad. Kind of. you' You'd like to see more offensive output because I think the final score was 2-1. But you know other than that, you know I'm not shocked that you know a lot of these guys are are doing what they're doing just because they've been here for a long time now.
00:26:20
Speaker
but Mariners don't look like themselves and the Mariners and the Blue Jays kind of not looking like what they were last year. So I think they're relatively in the same boat. I'd love to see someone kind of like compare and contrast how both those lineups look. Cause I think there's a lot of overlap between the two.
00:26:36
Speaker
Okay. The Blue Jays got swept by the White Sox. That's rough. Yeah. It's kind of funny. It is kind of funny. It's kind of awesome. I hope Pope Leo's stoked. Yeah. I don't, I don't have much to brag about. Yeah. With your series? i Come on, man. Tell me about it. Series 2, Padres. Let me talk to you. All right. It was it ended well. Giants win the series 2-1. Game 1, Giants get their first win of the season. In a true Giants fashion, torture ball. The Giants only scored three times, the last two runs being earned in the fourth. And after that ending, they only had two base runners for the rest of the game. Yeah.
00:27:10
Speaker
Yeah, Landon Roof was acting as a stopper. It was not going to be easy, but he made it look like it was. Landon Roof was like the one that's like, OK, we got Webb, we got Ray. And then Landon Roof was going to be like to show like, you know, how flimsy our rotation is right now, you know. Landon Rupp was going to be the one like, okay, if we're going to lose, it's going to be with Rupp, right? So he has a stopper. He had, he killed it. He had six shutout innings, only two hits. The lead was small and outcomes. The sometimes close Ryan Walker giants. This is crazy.
00:27:38
Speaker
Giants traded Duvall last year, right? Yes. Still don't have a close. I know I got him. No closer. Still no closer. Still closer by committee, which really screws up the bullpen. And you also traded the other guy, right? ah Who? Rodgers? Yes, we traded Rodgers. Yeah. so So Ryan Walker comes out. He struggled. The the year that he replaced Duval was great. But then the next year, it was a struggle. and he's still struggling.
00:28:00
Speaker
And he he struggled here, giving up a walk, followed by a home run before getting the last out. You know, we still have a closer. And the stress that this choice is, the stress of not having one is going to play good. the team i think for the whole season for the entire season they gotta figure this out that's gonna be like one of the big trade deadline things is we need to have someone who can close who's sitting at home right now and that can do it the see game two i put that this was the team that i was expecting to watch on opening day they put together an insurmountable offense and they had a great start against a weak marquez you know he is struggling but you know what a win's a win let me go back to game one real quick yeah nom sorry with the san diego but we're both getting back into it They get the three runs, right? The first one is in the first is this the third innings. It's Harrison Bader with a solo home run. And then it is the fourth. It's Chapman with a single followed by Lee with a walk. Who brings them in? It was Bailey and Schmidt were the ones to bring him in. And I think it was game two. So moving on to game two. This is very interesting because history was made in game two with ABS. In the game two, they had three runs in the first, followed by bases loaded in the second. So they failed to capitalize in Giants fashion. That is, that is, have it as three, four, five runners left on base for the whole, that whole game. This was their first inning. Willie Adamas, home run. Solo home run. Devers pops out.
00:29:17
Speaker
Ramos walks. Arias pops out. Chapman singles. Lee gets a bases clearing two run double. That's a lot of good stuff I'm hearing. Yeah, it was great. And then Bader grounds out to the first base. They wrapped around the in the eighth inning. No, not the eighth. Yeah, it was in the sixth inning. They almost did a full wraparound of the lineup. They started with Bader, who gets a double. Then Bailey, who walked. Schmidt struck out. And then it goes Willie with a single. He gets an RBI. Devers gets a single. Ramos gets a single and two RBIs out of I think going to rise. is Gets a sack, a sack fly in an RBI, RBI sack fly.
00:29:57
Speaker
And then it ends with Chapman getting out on the fielder's choice. Hmm. Casey Schmidt, third inning. He gets ah called strike three. Originally called a ball. He gets challenged. gets challenged. Overturned. Called strike three. And he was the last out for that inning. I don't hold that against him, though, because that pitch, I believe it was on Giants Talk. They talked about it, that that is the first time in MLB history that that pitch at that location in the zone was called a strike because of ABS. Before ABS, it's always been a ball. But ABS says it's actually a strike. That's crazy. That's the first time that pitch has ever been called a strike. That pitch, that location.
00:30:29
Speaker
It was like, i think it was sweeper that was down and outside. we live in a We live in a different time, man. We do. So ah the fourth and fifth were quiet, but for runs scored in the sixth and one last run in the ninth, being the ninth run, gave Webb a much needed win. ah Speaking of Webb, after struggles in the season opener, he continued to struggle. The his slash line might not truly reflect that. He was getting hit around, but he was able to push through and got the six innings we expect from him.
00:30:51
Speaker
And he ended his outing with five strikeouts. With Logan Webb, to kind of go over his slash end real quick, 103 pitches, six innings pitched, five strikeouts, four walks, three hits, three runs, and all three earned. I mean, the fact that by he gets he gets pulled out, you know, so he gets pulled out after the six, the Giants were already up eight. So I'm glad that he was able to, that's the only reason he was able to stick out yeah the six innings. For game three, I ended up missing this game because I was at work as a day game. I was originally going to be like, okay, ah you know, can't watch them all. We work full time.
00:31:22
Speaker
Yeah, and now we do. You know, mostly it's usually going to be the day games probably that we missed, although I'm going back to night shift, so we'll see how that works out for me. So I thought, you know, okay, win or lose, it'd be okay to miss it. It being a lot more controversial than I expected. There were two errors in the game, one given to Schmidt, one to Chapman. These were the first errors of the season. One of the errors came in a key moment that left the bases loaded. During a mound visit, Chapman told Schmidt to catch the effing ball.
00:31:44
Speaker
This, of course, made headlines because of the bad start, the team's bad start. Immediately after the game, during interviews, Chapman and Schmidt told their respective reporters that there's they're fine with each other. It wasn't, you know, that big of a deal. i was just heat of the moment stuff, and they talked it out. and that's the importance of covering your mouth with your gloves. For highlights, for game one, I put Harrison Bader's home run, Lennon Roop's amazing pitching, and the bullpen continues to to pitch strong. For game two, my highlights were Adonis kills it on ah offense with Willie going game two. Yeah, game two, he goes, you know, solo home run. He gets a single, gets a ground out 5-3, a single and an RBI, and then a double and gets to third base on a wild pitch. Huge synergy between the players for game two. Webb battling through his issues and the bullpen continues to be dependable. My MVP for game one on the pitching side is Landon Roop. He went 88 pitches, six innings pitched, one walk, two hits, no walk, no runs. On offense, it was Casey Schmidt who I gave for going three at bats, one hit by pitch, no runs, two hits, and one RBI. For game two, I put Brubaker as the ah MVP for pitching. He goes two innings pitched, one strikeout, two hits. On offense was Willie Adames going five at bats, four hits, two runs, one one of them being a home run, two RBI. Lowlights for game one, it was an ineffective first four of the lineup, which was Adames, Devers, Ramos, and Arias.
00:32:59
Speaker
They had between all of them, those four, 12 at bats, no runs, one walk, one hit, no RBIs. Another low light for game two was leaving bases loaded in the second for that particular game in the second. That starts off with, who does that start with? It starts with Bailey who lines out. Schmidt gets a single, gets the second base. Adamas gets a single. Devers gets a single. And then the next two guys pop out and then fly out. That's Ramos and Arise. Nothing for game three. And then before we get to our next series, just have some notes here because there were moves made to the roster. There was a trade made. Two trades. Let me hear it. I don't think I've heard of this. first one is Luis Matos. He gets traded to the Brewers for cash.
00:33:35
Speaker
Money. Yeah. the The cash is later used to trade for Dylan Smith. Cool. Well, the cash was one part. For Luis Matos, just to give you this was his career with the Giants. 162 games played, 550 at-bats, 64 runs, 127 hits, 61 RBIs, 36 walks, 84 strikeouts, 231 batting average, 281 on-base percentage, and 650 OPS. Now with Luis Matos gone, this is very notable because with him gone, and also think Tyler Fitzgerald, he gets DFA'd. I'll get to that. But with these moves, the team has, I believe, has lost the last of the Farhan Kapler era top prospects. Our prospects are gone. Tyler Fitzgerald got DFA'd along with the cash for Dylan Smith. Dylan Smith is a reliever. He gets pulled in. He's back down to the minors. Oh, yeah. So with Tyler Fitzgerald, he had 178 games played, 563 at-bats, 75 runs, 142 hits, 53 RBIs, 41 walks, 188 strikeouts. His batting average was 252, his percentage was 309 with OPS of 730. What kind of role are you thinking Dylan Smith's going to be playing once he gets called up? No idea.
00:34:39
Speaker
No clue. No clue. No clue. I don't know. We'll have to take a look at this. Some his other stats just to kind of see where he he came from. Where? Oh, where did he come from? Orioles? Tigers. Tigers. Tigers. The other orange team.
00:34:53
Speaker
There are a lot of orange teams. So he gets traded over, sent down to the minors. So we'll see. Other note that I put is that the A's, by this point, this is, you know, by the end of the series, the A's are the first team to cross 50 strikeouts. In MLB? Yeah, by their third game. Jeez. Yeah. How crazy is that? Couldn't have happened to a worse owner.
00:35:12
Speaker
Yes. I'm happy to a better owner. So that's why that's my Padres series. it was It was great. We won. First win, first series win, first episode of the regular season. And I'm already looking at the team at like, okay, ignore the win-loss. It's about winning series now.
00:35:27
Speaker
Now here's four with the Mets. Yeah, forget everything about how many games behind 500 we are. Don't think about it like that. Just win series. Don't think about streaks. So now we get to the ah last series of the ah of the episode. For teams. Who would you guys play against? We got the Marlins. Miami Marlins. what What do you think? Miami or should they be the Florida Marlins? um i did that Were they the first team or second team? Oh, what do you mean Were they like the first Florida team or the second Florida team? i think they were the first Florida team. First Florida team? I would say keep it Miami, and then it would be the Rays that should be the Florida Rays. Although the the Marlins did start off as the Florida Marlins, didn't they? Yeah, it was the first Florida MLB team. I want to make sure I'm getting this right. Yep, I think it was them. Okay. 1993, I think the Rays came in 97, unless I'm thinking of a different team. 98. 98? They were the Devil Rays. They wanted them to be scary. They were not all that scary. Devil Rays is pretty cool though.
00:36:21
Speaker
Marlon's expecting a bank things to happen. Series ends up 2-1. Win towards the Yanks. We'll talk about that in a little bit. Game three. Game one was an 8-2. Another kind of thwomping. This was the home opener. Just the top of the hour. Will Warren gets the start.
00:36:35
Speaker
not Not all that bad. Not all that bad. Four hits, two earned runs, six strikeouts, no walks, 5.2 innings pitch, but then the bullpen makes quick work and we're flawless. 0-0-0 across the board. All you really got to look forward to really is some x Xavier Edwards in the first inning. He was the the second batter up and he goes deep in the first. He's going to kind of be a constant play throughout this. So keep his name in mind when it comes to the highs and lows. Judge responds, same inning with big sleep on first to make it 2-1. will warren uh also is wearing number 29 he was wearing 98 before 29 was his uh cousin's number he played in high school who he recently lost i've been told for michael k a little tug at the heartstrings there make it healthy jazz steals two bags in the second putting him on third cabanero and big man work to load the bases and perez walks one and hits judge for another rice strikes at and the top of the second make it 4-1. Bronx, Jazz gets on with one out in the third. Capierro tries to lay down a bunt with one out, but is unsuccessful. Or with a two out, which ends the third. I think I might have got that wrong. i keep my i'm keep I'm trying to keep myself honest this season when I get something wrong.
00:37:42
Speaker
I'm going to say it. Another solo homer. Casey Owens makes it 4-2 New York. Warren puts away 12 in a row up until that point and is pulled out right after that. but After putting on two in the sixth with two away. Marlins go to the pen next.
00:37:54
Speaker
The inning ends kind of no consequence. Let's go to the pen. Only giving up one so far. les Let's see how this goes. The Marlins' bullpen has only given up one run so far. I think they led the league up till this point. Things change after after this outing. Wills gets on. Cavadiero gets on. Joe's goes on with two away.
00:38:09
Speaker
Belly at the plate. And the ball gets away from Liam Hicks trying to make a relay to one of the plates. No. ah Yeah, Liam Hicks' catcher tries to get the ball. catch it it It bounces off his glove and goes to the backstop. It's a pass ball. That's what i'm thinking. that bring That brings one in. That's five to two. And Belly flies out, still with a couple of runners on, to end the sixth. Narrative thing, Rice was 0-3 this game. That changes up real quick, solo home run in the next inning, making it It's the 8th now.
00:38:34
Speaker
Judge goes up, Big Sleep comes up from first with a physical slide and pops out. It's like a rough slide to all the way over to third. And he pops the basement off, but he also pops himself off. And he's originally called safe, but upon review he's called out.
00:38:47
Speaker
It's kind of like a rough and tumble kind of thing, trying to get physical there. So now the Yankees don't have someone in scoring position. Judge gets on, goes to first, and was like, you know what, all right, I'll put myself in scoring position. And Judge steals a bag for such a big guy like him. I know, it feels wrong to see him. like it It feels like it shouldn't be possible for him to steal a base. Any big guy, really. Paul Goldschmidt, Giancarlo Stanton. Giancarlo Stanton... He has other reasons why...
00:39:12
Speaker
He has other reasons why, but he he also, i think it's just the fan base hyping him up, but he stole the base later this series. He's got wheels. I feel like if Giancarlo steals on you, he should automatically be awarded another base. The the next base. He should automatically be awarded home plate.
00:39:28
Speaker
Yeah, like how do you let that happen? Unless it's called defensive indifference. If Giancarlo Stanton steals home on you, I think you should be DFA'd. Yeah, the you and the the the pitcher and the catcher. Where did I leave off? No, Josh steals bag. Marlon's put belly rice marlins put belly on for Rice. And Rice, who was, again, over for three not too long ago after that home run, hits it off the short porch wall.
00:39:51
Speaker
And Judge and Belly score, making it eight to two with an RBI double for Benny Boy. In the ninth, Belly has an ESPN top 10 catch where it's like, it was weird. He like initially kind of like went forward to kind of catch it, but then he's facing the other direction. He's facing like towards the wall, so he literally can't see behind him. But it like, but it kind of like bounces off his hand or like his arm and then falls into his glove anyway. Nice. It's kind of cool. I'd have you blind react to that if I had it on hand, but I did not link it in my script. that's all good That was the the rest of the offense. Andy and I pick off. They pick off Ramirez trying to come back to second for out number two. Liam Hicks flies out for the final out. And that was game one, eight to two final.
00:40:28
Speaker
Nice. Nice. ah Your team's scoring a lot. they're They're coming up with with different interesting ways. They're like getting stuff off walls, stealing ba stealing bags and all that. Yeah, this is really fun to watch. ah i I didn't expect this series to be fun to watch just because, you know, I wasn't expecting anything really from the Marlins. That's fair. Maybe I should. Yeah. You know, Xavier Edwards, kind of like a a thorn in the side. I put later on that we got to keep tabs on him. See what comes after that. Game two, first comeback win of the season. Okay. Ryan Weathers has the game I was expecting him to have in the Seattle. He let Hernandez with two on, line a ball right between right and and center field as he turns on the Jets for a bases clearing triple, make it 2-0 early. Whatever. Premieres then has an RBI single in the second to make it three nothing Now to the Yankees side of the third. Just reaches up the wall for a five for what I initially characterized as a 5-shifting out. It's like, all right, Yankees are finally awake. Let's get this moving. that That's a lie. We've got wait a little bit longer for that. Oh.
00:41:23
Speaker
Then once everything turns over, Max Meyer gets Rice swinging and Stanton to pop out behind the dish. After that pitching change, we can't have Ryan Weathers on there anymore. Sorry, guy. Paul Blackburn comes in to the fourth with two outs and one on. And this is where like ah the strangest kind of like series of unfortunate events happen because the ump gets hit. oh I'm surprised like this didn't this didn't go viral outside of Yankee circles because the ump gets hit. Well, got overshadowed by C.B. Buckner's terrible week. Probably, Alm gets hit and he stays in. He later comes out, but he stays in for right now. This was only on Paul Blackburn's like fourth pitch of the game. And after that, he like almost immediately lets a blooper over shortstop. Ramirez goes for third with two yanks over by the bag, but they're so unsure on who's covering ah no that the ball just goes right past both of them and even past the dugout. It just rolls all the way over to the backstop. So out of play, out of that double? Yeah.
00:42:16
Speaker
Oh, no. Oh, no, no, no. It it doesn't go in into the dugout. It goes past it and straight over and and rolls literally all the way back by where the catcher is supposed to be. Oh, my God. Okay. So that that shifts everything over to 4-0. This is where I said, i just put the vibe shift was fake. The vibe shift was fake. Home plate on Brahm Coppa is now starting to really feel the pitch he got hit by. And first um change, I think, of the season. I think so. Was that before the, ah that that had to be before the, yeah, right here on, it says that he was diagnosed with a concussion. Really? Yeah. Oh, geez. This is from the AP. I didn't read up on that. I was too busy looking at my team, but that's very unfortunate.
00:42:52
Speaker
Ron Coppa. Ron Coppa. All this in the game isn't halfway over. We're still in the fourth. Created an 11 minute delay. He debuted in 1998. He's 57. The same year as a chameleon twist. He was a World Series umpire in 2011 and 21.
00:43:06
Speaker
Comeback umpire of the year award goes to him once he coaches the ah would see what's in the the hours for the next World Series. Okay, fifth now judge up judges up hits it straight up the judge hit up middle hole. I think I'm like middle between it's up in the middle. All right, he hits up the middle. yeah i'm I'm getting crazy with Matt with my vocab. ah You get hit up the middle is terrible is' terrible being on the receiving end of that one little bit, yeah. There's not much you can do. is you're just your just your foot Your feet are out of place. Just up Belly to go short porch, home run, making it 4-2. Max Meyer now finally gets switched out. He was looking like great beforehand. I think they just didn't like everything they saw after that. were like, all right, let let's pull him out now. But he's you he's also going to be an interesting guy to keep tabs on. Maybe he's not a starter for his entire career, but maybe ah a lengthy bull bullpen piece later down the line for a contender. Gotcha, gotcha.
00:43:54
Speaker
Oh, okay, okay. So he's ah he's a Marlins. Yep. Next play, okay. Bullpen comes in, immediately walks two, but Jazz bails out the new guy, striking out, swinging, and, like, the most awkward, like, I'm just gonna, like, try and tap the corner of the zone kind of thing with, like, one hand. Do you think managers want to hang themselves when they make a pitching switch and the bullpen just immediately gives a a walk? I do whenever I do it in any game. All right. Well, terrible. That sucks. It's it's face fine. ja Jazz bails him out. He's not having a good series. Oh, don't know if I cover that in this one or the next one, but Jazz not having a good series here.
00:44:25
Speaker
That pickoff really messed with him. Yeah. Moving on now to the six, big sleep. Trent Grisham, RBI single drives in. Goldie, who got on ah on a walk in from second, make it 4-3. Cabanero gets hit by a pitch and is on second. Grisham first with judge at the plate. And all all are up. All the vibes are out. You know, second homing game of the season, looking for something big. First shot down the right field line, making it 4-4. Belly up after that. He pops up. Trent tags up. guess there was only like one out for that one. But with the throw home, he ends up safe.
00:44:54
Speaker
and making it 5-4 New York. Again, things moving. We're finally on top. 7 now. Stanton steals second, and everyone is shocked. Everyone's like, fist bumping, absolutely shocked. the Bag of chips don't mean nothing over here. And he eventually scores on a wild pitch from third, making it 6-4.
00:45:08
Speaker
And this is the part up in Drenna Duvall gets up. Andrew, if if I may interject, how how was Duvall when he was with you guys?
00:45:18
Speaker
Oh my gosh, Andrew's muted. I'll wait for him to get back. Oh my god, I didn't realize I was muted. You're a muted guy. Yeah, sorry. So Duvall, he had that 70 game save series. You know, 70 saves, 70 game save series. What am I talking about?
00:45:30
Speaker
70 saves season. That was great. Struggled after that. He's always been known to be stressful. Like anytime he's coming out, it's he's not... If he gets the save and everything ends up fine, it's not the path that you think that most closers would take. He's going to walk guys. He's going to have some wild pitches. And he's going to have at least one pitch clock violation.
00:45:49
Speaker
and that is I was expecting the pitch clock violation. You told me that, I think, when first got our hands on him. It's always stressful with him. And the thing is, like, it's stressful with it. Like, watching him is stressful. He never looks stressed. He just kind of, like, marches to the beat of his own drum.
00:46:03
Speaker
ah He does not care about the the new pitch clock rule. Which might have been the aspect of his game that either Boone or Cashman liked the most, that he'd he'd be kind of calm under pressure, but he's not yeah either either as lucky or as good as he was. It is imperative that you have mountain visits available if you know that you're going to be using them. You have to keep them saved up. But but yeah, that that is that is Camilla de Vaal. All right, Yankees finally get this two-run lead and everything. All fine, all dandy, all good. Duvall comes up in the eighth, immediately gives up two hits. Runners on third and second and gives up another hit right up the left field line and make it 6-6 on a double from their nine-hole hitter. Just like statistically doesn't make sense. You don't want that to happen. And then he gets the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth. Yeah. Yankees get the bases loaded to the bottom of the eighth. Stanton gets a two-run single out, make it 8-6, kind of getting our swagger back. And then a wild pitch off of Ramirez's glove, there other pitch their other catcher that they have that is not Liam Hicks. I like Liam Hicks because we share a name.
00:47:02
Speaker
That brings Benz Rice home, making it 9-6. This is where I put Jazz's stat, not in the next game. Jazz was 0-5 in this game. Jazz 0-5 this game in the next inning. This is the top of the 90th year that I'm talking about. Jazz, I just i just put his bad egg stat because he's about to do something bad defensively.
00:47:18
Speaker
He does not get his runner in time. He's trying to make a relay over to to first. He's just kind of like holding it for too long, kind of in ah in jazzy fashion. he're like He's a very expressive player, so people are going to kind of dog on him more than it's naturally. and just like, oh, the throw wasn't in time or whatever. He tries to like seamlessly make it make it all seamless. So it might seem a little less natural to the naked eye, but they don't get the runner at first. Rehspace, Bednar's on the mound trying to close. Another runner gets on on Bednar's watch, allowing a Xavier Edwards, again from the first game, but to RBI single or ah run in to make it 9-7. Bednar then takes 30 pitches to finish at the ninth, but Yankees get away. 30 pitches.
00:47:54
Speaker
30 pitches. Yeah. Crazy. So he's out for the next two days. a little bit. Yeah. So that, that was a nine, seven win in his last appearance. It took like 40. I also mentioned that was like the 11, 29 split. Not that he doesn't share blame for that. He's also letting runners get on, but he's not coming in on the best situations. Fair. And then game three is ah kind of letting the game come away from them. Loss, seven to six. I think this one is mainly on the bullpen. And also the three-plus-hour rain delay that they had.
00:48:23
Speaker
Max Fried on the mound. Marlins strike first for the third time in the series. Pete Fairbanks is on the mound for Tampa. Big Sleep works a walk for Judge. He pops up for a single. Belly pushes them on on a sacrifice. All for Ben Rice to send them all home for a second-deck home run. Make it 3-1. So and eight they answer straight back. But ah who is who is Big Sleep? Big Sleep is ah Trent Grisham. Trent okay.
00:48:44
Speaker
I put him down as Big Sleep for a lot in my notes, but I'm trying to like, I was like mentally trying to to correct. I don't know why he got that name. Why did Trent... Did he sleep through a ah game or something? Get the name Big Sleep. don't think he'd be on the team if that happened because of his incredibly calm, low-key, and sleepy demeanor on the field.
00:49:07
Speaker
Interesting way to get your nickname. That is... to do Second deck home run. Yankers. Third, Judge gets to second to start the inning for New York. Belly gets up. Rice at the plate. The Marlins have literally just seen this happen before, it so they're trying not to make the exact same thing go awry. ah They try to get him grounding out. They try to get him grounding out, and they're trying to throw it to the second baseman, but he shanks it past the shortstop's glove. oh Judge scores to make a 4-1. The inning ends with New York straining two, though. Okay.
00:49:33
Speaker
Xavier Edwards, again, brings home another run from second base the next inning and stays hot to make it 4-2. Not really a notable inning, though, because one gets by, but you still have a pretty sizable lead and you're expecting your offense to do something. Skipping over to the sixth, Freed puts two on and the Yankees fail to convert, ground up the middle into an out. So one comes across without punishment, making it 4-3. Now you're starting to get a little bit worried. Marlins Hernandez on first with a pickup after challenge and they get Lopez at home again after a challenge. Kind of unlucky series of events for them. Jake Bird is on the mound for the Yankees in the eighth and he was bad last season. He's been very, he was good so far. I think it was the last split I saw from him before this game. It was just one of those flawless outings, but Yankee Twitter was not, once he came on, were like, oh God, this is like Boone coming out, putting the wrong guy on the wrong mound at the wrong time. He immediately leads the bases, kind of. Not immediately, kind of lethargically leads the bases on a hit, a walk, and a hit by pitch, which is kind of like a pitcher's cycle. Yeah. The anti-pitcher's cycle. I hope there's someone at the bullpen right now.
00:50:37
Speaker
Kind of immediately. You kind of tweet that as soon as you kind of you kind of see it. send the Send the pitching coach out there. Talk to the guy as long as possible so I can get someone warmed up. Yeah. Graham Paul takes credit on the Marlins end for pushing the Marlins back over with a two RBI double, making it 5-1 Miami.
00:50:54
Speaker
ah Yarbrough in now. is Xavier Edwards up, and he clears the rest of the bases on a single to make it 7-1 Miami. That would be the only hit Yarbrough does let up, to be fair. kind of the the damage has been done before that anthony bender comes in in the ninth for in miami not to be not to be confused with benar this is anthony bender bender which i think is a not nice word hockey players use billy and rice walk one out satan comes up and swing uh goes down looking jazz is up now rough series not a lot of people are expecting him to do something but he puts one in between right field and center field clearing the bases with a double making it 7-6. I think without that, he might have he might have got my LVP for but the series. Okay. But that was kind of clutch, even if it is nonetheless meaningless. He didn't go 0-4-6.
00:51:36
Speaker
Yeah. Wills intentionally walks so that the pitcher can get to Ascara, and he's punched out with the final, making it 7-6. This one kind of hurt just because the game got away from him last minute. And again, ah you know, Jazz's previous mistakes, it's nice to see him kind of redeem himself, even if it was all for naught. Okay. My MVP is Ben Rice.
00:51:54
Speaker
He hit for 300 with three hits, two home runs, six ah RBIs, four runs scored in three games. LVP I'm giving to Deval. Let me show you his, ah let me just read out his 10.8 ERA. He has amassed over the five games so far with only five strikeouts, 3.1 innings pitched, five hits. Only one walk though. Oh my God, that's horrible. So ah positives. He's a closer, no. No, no. 10 ERA is a closer, terrible. I don't think he's going to be in the closer conversation for all that long. Probably not.
00:52:23
Speaker
There are already nostalgia edits of Luke Weaver, even though he's not on the team anymore. Oh, no. Oh, no. So, you know, get that little brother. Hey, you know who needs a closer? You guys. The Giants. You guys want him back? I think I take him. You take him? I think I take him. What do we get in return? Cash. Cash?
00:52:40
Speaker
Just cash? Just cash. He doesn't want him anyway. I mean, ah I mean, kind of. I'll give you Ryan Walker. You know what? It's not. It's not. That's a name. It's not Duvall. So we'll take it. I make that deal. How about you, you bitch? You make that deal? I make that deal. I don't blame you. Damn good deal. So it's series when a two one could have been three one. But, you know, positives and all that. okay I don't think I have really anything that to ask. It's just you're winning. We're winning. Yeah. Like the the losses are are not terrible. We're winning. I'm yapping. I don't know how much I have for. god Don't worry about it. It was a lot.
00:53:09
Speaker
Because we got... Editor, thank you for your magic. Thank you, Alex. Everyone say hello to Alex. Hello, Alex. Hello, Alex. He's our new editor for this new season. So we will see how much he's able to edit down and make us look like know we're talking about. Yeah. All right. So we get to the last series for the Giants. It was a four-game series. Last episode, I said it three-game series. Four-game series against the Mets.
00:53:29
Speaker
So it's back at home. The Amazons. The other New York team. Giants dropped the series 1-3. That brings their record for the season to Well, actually, they're 3-7. 3-7. Okay. Yeah, 3-7 now. 3-7. And that puts the bottom, right? That puts us as last place in the division. Well, behind the Rockies. Behind the Rockies. So game one, Giants return home to play against the other New York team. And they came out swinging and they win 7-2. There's only one notably cold bat for that game. And that would have been Adamas. Mm-hmm. But we saw Daniel Suzak. He was a much like Sable before him catcher. He was picked up by was a rule five draft pick. He's a backup catcher. This is his first full game and his first start as the catcher as Bailey was resting. Great synergy through most of the game and bases were left loaded twice. In game two, I missed this one because I had to run D&D. What points out to me for this one is the offense and just how it felt like the team feels like the start of the 2023 season. That was the year that the Giants, think that was the last time the Giants opened against the Yankees.

Giants' Inconsistent Performance

00:54:30
Speaker
That was in New York. That's the one where they lost, they won, they lost. They were going 500 the whole like they're just all spending wins and losses. But also for their hitting that year, it would be like they got no runs the second game. They got 11 runs the next game. No runs the next game. 11 runs like they kept like doing this weird hot and cold stuff. And that happened again.
00:54:49
Speaker
hmm. In game three is another game against the New York team. Another game where the Giants get blown out. It was a 9-0 shutout at home. No hot and cold here. hot and cold to be found. And the Giants set a total of one win at home. Offense was dead.
00:55:02
Speaker
Defense was subpar. There were two errors. Pitching was okay. Root wasn't too bad, but the second inning turned in the worst. Giants had their leadoff bats get on base for the first for the first three innings, but could not capitalize, and they didn't get another base runner until the seventh. Second baseman Koss got his first taste of the season as a position player pitcher and didn't give up a hit. Winning a four-game series, however, anything, but now need to salvage it in a tie the last game, and the last game becomes even more important. Game four, another disappointing series comes to a disappointing end. Webb starts coming back from a rocky, you know, previous two starts. He delivered. Yeah, has it has been common with the starts and the offense thus far. The bats were not there. Errors, two of them are notable. One to Bailey for catcher's interference. One Chapman again for a botched throw to first. The Giants held a tenuous lead of 2-1 until the eighth when the Mets blew the game open to a five two lead. Other blunders happened as well. Encarnacion, he was the DH for the day, was called out on interference for not being in the runner's lane, leading to Tony Vitello's first ejection. Yes. In the ninth inning, Chapman was caught stealing, stealing second. Although, you know, at the time, I was like, that's ridiculous. why like Why are you risking that? However, Devers, who was behind him, the ball that he put in play was a routine double play ball, so it probably didn't matter that Chapman got caught stealing. It's only April, and us Giants fans cannot look at win-loss anymore. Just focus on winning series as the Giants plummet to last in their division. Before we get to the

Standout Performances and Key Incidents

00:56:16
Speaker
Vitello ejection, just want to go over my my highlight. okay For game one, I put ah tidwell bla Tidwell. He's a pitcher. He pitched three innings, closed out the game, only giving up two hits with no runs and no walks. In game three, Kost made his pitching debut. ah He's the second baseman. He was a position pitcher pitching. Did not allow a hit in nine pitches.
00:56:34
Speaker
So pretty good. Pretty cool. Game four, Webb felt like the Webb we love with the strong seven innings pitch. Only allowed one run. Daniel Susak for batting for game one. This was his debut. You probably saw the viral clip of his brother holding his nephew getting shaken and he was just freaking out the whole time. You saw that? I don't think so. No. Let me get this to you. Yeah, two reactions. Yeah.
00:56:55
Speaker
There we go. I'll send this link over to you. Give that a click and let me know what you think. I'm giving it a click. I'm going three for three. Yeah, no, I can't believe. Oh, no, wait. I have seen this. this i I saw this i thought out of context. I just saw the the the child tossed So for my highlights for game one, Daniel Suzak goes three for three with a walk. He also has a key ABS challenge getting Ryan Walker out of the inning that turned a walk into a called strike three. And Devers had a so one solo home run. Game three, none. Game four, Matt Chapman. He was two for three, one run, one RBI, and one walk. My MVP for pitching is Blade Tidwell. He went three innings pitch, two hits, no walk walks, no runs. Nothing for game two, nothing for game three. Batting, Daniel Suzak, three for three, one walk, no runs. Nothing for game three. Game four, I put Matt Chapman, but I forgot to put what his stats were.
00:57:46
Speaker
I have it right here on my scorecard. Chapman goes three at bats, one run, two hits, one RBI, and one walk. Low lights. For pitching, game one, I put Robbie Ray. Something's wrong with our best starters, Webb and Ray. Ray was wild this game. Had trouble finding the zone. Gave up three walks, two runs. Though his stat lines for the game, much like Webb and his start in San Diego, that does not reflect the problems. It should be noted that he had 26 pitches after the first inning, 41 after the second, 59 after the third, 79 after the fourth, 92 after the fifth, and 96 after one out the sixth.
00:58:15
Speaker
seventy nine after the fourth
00:58:21
Speaker
Jeez. When he eventually got pulled. On game three for defense, got Chapman. He errors, allowing two runs. Lee errors, allowing a runner to third and who eventually scores. Nothing for game four. Game one for batting to put Willie Adamas has gone cold in the worst way after his fun times in San Diego. He went 0 for 4 with a walk and three strikeouts. One of them called with an emotionally charged bad ABS challenge. Game three is the entire lineup again. Total three hits and two walks, no runs. Game four, the lineup. Four straight strikeouts from the first into the second and a total of seven strikeouts. Lee looked lost at the plate and he was called out. He was the only called strike three in the game and struck out three times. LVP on the pitching side across the four games. I put none for batting. Game one, Willie Domus. 0 for 4, no hits, one walk, three strikeouts. No one for game two or three. Game four, I put Lee. He went 0 for 4, three strikeouts, looked lost. On defense, I put Chapman because he had that one error that led to two runs and an nightmare inning for Rube. Now Encarnacion had a what looked to be this was in the seventh inning. He's going to get a single. He runs puts the ball on play running towards first. The first baseman drops the ball. Encarnacion makes it to first. The el first base umpire calls him out for not being in the runner's lane. He was a little bit left of the line not in the grass but he was left of the the line and they called him out on that. I thought they could go into the grass now. But that leads to a Tony Vitello getting ejected. I have the audio here. So Liam, we can we can go. Go ahead and start it, but pause it and then mute the ah Discord one and we'll just listen to the audio on a count to three. Ready?
00:59:49
Speaker
One, two, two three. It all starts with good at bats and that was a good at bat. Keep having those and sooner or later you'll find holes.
01:00:02
Speaker
Incarnacion, one for two. that's this one <unk> hang out it's gotta be an e3 they're calling him out they are well they're saying he left the runners lane oh we're seeing a little fire now from byello
01:00:36
Speaker
A lot of bad words to call. He was inside the runner's lane. Not this fast. On the infield side.
01:00:45
Speaker
And you'll see what gets him. But the ball didn't hit. Encarnacion.

Giants' Struggles and Management Criticism

01:00:56
Speaker
You see the two lines on the first baseline. You've got to be inside that runner's lane. And he never got there. He was running inside the whole way. Interesting. Interesting.
01:01:09
Speaker
I could definitely see it now. see it now. see
01:01:24
Speaker
it now.
01:01:35
Speaker
So, Rackley, let him have a say.
01:01:39
Speaker
think he got tossed by. Well, that's case and he's walking out for the first time and
01:01:49
Speaker
Fired up the troops. We'll see how it all affects. when did when did he get the When did he get the... I didn't see the motion he got thrown out. It cut out, but it's after it's right after he points to the ump. Okay, yeah. I was going to say it it was probably the point. Yeah, I think he says FU too.
01:02:05
Speaker
So Tommy Vitello gets ejected. You're hoping like, hey, maybe they'll fire people up? No, the the Mets just blow the game open. And that's how the last game of the series goes. It's in a devastating loss of 8-2.
01:02:16
Speaker
they to to so Sigh. Yeah. So the Giants are struggling. Terrible, terrible start. What changes do you want to see, really? I don't know. Like, that's the thing. It's like, I just don't understand like, what is wrong?
01:02:30
Speaker
Are we cursed? Should we just change the name of the team? Or should we designate somebody in the organization as you are the the giants and then kick them out and hopefully the curse stays with them?
01:02:41
Speaker
Cause I, I don't know. Like these struggles aren't new. You know, we, we had these struggles during the, the, the Farhan and Kapler era. A lot of those guys are gone. Now, all the prospects are gone. Now we sensibly have, you know, Buster's team. Yeah. Like this is his roster and we're still having these same issues. I know that like the media has been just crazy towards Tony Vitello. There seems to be like a lot of anger over former college coach getting the job, you know, not some 80 year old. How much can be put on him? Is it his fault that Willie Adamas goes strikeout, double play, strikeout, strikeout, walk? Like, is that his fault? Is that like a manager's fault? i don't think so. Is it a coach's fault? I don't know. Like something happens with like we get these guys. It happened with Solaire. You know, Solaire was an interesting one because the season before he played with the Giants for DH.
01:03:25
Speaker
If he was a Giant for that season, he would have had one extra home run. Mm-hmm. And then he was just terrible. It was like, is it the way that we're we're coaching? is it Is it like analytics? Is it just not understanding something about the players? i don't know. There could probably be some better, you know, bench utilization. Christian Koss has yet to play at second base. You know, some people were were saying like hey, maybe Christian Koss would be best to be played, you know, on second over Arise when Logan Webb starts because he has a lot of success with Logan Webb. Something about him just understands how Logan Webb plays than Arise right now. I don't know. I think it's just like, just grind it out. I don't know. Like if there's anything going on in the clubhouse or what, it doesn't feel like this is not the way that the team with these guys should be playing. mean, I don't know what the, uh, I don't know what the answer is. it diagnoses it's It's also early, you know, maybe we don't, you probably don't have a be enough sample size to accurately judge. You know, what's the what's the leash for Buster? I don't know. I mean, he's very well loved. So like fan base wise, a really long one to the point where like for some people are like, ah people are hesitant to criticize him because, you know, he's so well loved. he He was instrumental to, you know, three World Series wins, right? Like his injury, you know, his injury against the Marlins 2011. It's arguable that that cost us a back to back World Series, even though it happened so early in the year. This is his

Upcoming Games and Season Outlook

01:04:41
Speaker
second year. Yeah, I think so. Yeah. Second full year. And now we have all the moves that ah yeah Farhan made are kind of like being nullified right now. Is it just something that's going to take some time? Yeah, maybe.
01:04:52
Speaker
and don't know. Striking out, leaving bases loaded as a manager. Like, what's the manager going to do? How do you... You can't do anything in the middle of a game to, like, keep someone from... Striking out. Okay, maybe you after Willie strikes out that third time, right? Maybe you pull him out for the seventh inning and have him. like you Who would you throw on? i don't know. Schmidt? He could play second or could play short maybe. And then you you need someone that who was eight ninety someone at first. So you could put Arise at first and then you could... I don't know. Or can put Christian Cossett as short. I don't know. Just hopefully tough it out. Hopefully this is an inverse of last year where they had a really hot start and petered out. Maybe maybe they'll they'll have a rough first half and then come back to win it all on the the second. But yeah, maybe it's too early to tell. it's definitely too early to tell. Yeah, it's only three series. You have so much so many more like negatives to really talk about. This first month is a gauntlet. Everyone was hoping the Mets, Mets, and they didn't. And I think out of this first month, it's rough. So we'll see. We'll see. Liam. Drewski. The Yankees. Yankers. When we come back in two weeks. We'll have a three-game series against the A's. that We will. And they're not the A's of old. We'll have three-game series at home. We'll have a three-game series on the road against the Tampa Bay Rays.
01:06:04
Speaker
That I do, yes. A four-game series at home against the Angels. Four games, really damn. And a three game series at home against the Royals. How you about those? They have to check in on the Royals. They're the ones I'm most unfamiliar with. They no longer have Yaz.
01:06:18
Speaker
The A's are not the A's of old. And while they're not home, which like is kind of got a good home atmosphere for however long that that stint is going to be. They just debuted like some yellow Sacramento jerseys. Hmm. It'll be interesting because I feel like it's going to be a ah testament for for the A's, even if it is very early on in the season, whether they're going to be making some noise against a team that's going to be that's expected to go pretty deep come later in the season.
01:06:43
Speaker
Yeah, expected to be back into the postseason. The Rays are second in the AL East, but everyone else in the AL East, it's not the Yankees, does not have a winning record right now. And their fan bases are pretty disappointed. So again, you got to gauge where stuff like that is up and under.
01:07:01
Speaker
The Angels, I'm hearing good things about the Angels. What are you hearing? Yeah, they had that crazy game against the Mariners. Yep. But with the right fielder just robbing home runs left and right. Real, real, real, real. The Joe show. Joe Adele.
01:07:12
Speaker
Joe Adele. I didn't even have to look up his name. His name is Joe Adele. Yeah, they're they're second in their division just underneath the the Astros 500 record. Some some names to to keep up there. They've spent enough time in the basement. You know, maybe they're they're coming up. Although Mike Trout is day-to-day now. The Mariners just decided to kill him. Yeah, so they hit him the arm and the contusion.
01:07:32
Speaker
Mm-hmm. contusion the kansas city royals let me look at let me look where they're at right now they're four and five second to last we're just right above the twins second to last they're second in their division the royals yeah not second in the division four and five yeah the second the goals are tied for a second in division they're They're tied for a second, but just like the way that the order shakes out. theyre oh that's weird. On the MLB, they have them as second, yeah just under Cleveland. They have them second in the division? Yeah. They're probably going off some record, probably. Some stat that they have. Maybe it might be better than some others. They're only 500 at home, though. Something to keep in mind. Will they be home? Is this in a way, Series?
01:08:07
Speaker
No, it's at home. Not home. are you can we We love our home games, bro. Love our home game. Love that stadium, bro. But yeah, interesting to see if they they put it in before. And maybe if we were like one or two more series deep, I'd have a better gauge of them. But I don't really know what to think. I don't know. I hear a Bobby Wood Jr. might be a good player. i don't know. He might be good at baseball.
01:08:26
Speaker
Something like that. All Then the Giants will be playing a three-game series against the Phillies at home. Then they go on the road. First, a three-game series at Orioles, Baltimore. Three-game series in Cincinnati against the Reds. And finishing that off with a three-game series in D.C. against the Nationals. Interesting, just kind of like looking at records right now. Philly is...
01:08:47
Speaker
fourth they're five four the division orioles are fourth three and six in their division the reds are tied for second in their division six and three and the nationals are last in their division with three and six however something about the nationals gives us a hard time we barely have a winning record against them historically that park just gives gives us a bad time The Phillies are the Phillies, so of course I'm concerned about them, regardless of what the record is. The Orioles are struggling. was I don't think I was expecting them to be where they are. I think I was expecting them to be maybe third. They seem to have some struggles, so I'm hoping that they continue to struggle for those three games. And then the Reds are the Reds. We got guys with power. You know, it's a great, was what do they call it, the Reds Park? Reds Park. Great American Small Park. Yes. So hopefully we can capitalize there, but we'll see.
01:09:37
Speaker
I think I think after this, these 12 games, I think that's

Wrap-up and Future Engagement

01:09:41
Speaker
going to be the that's going to be like set my mood for the rest of the season. I think really, i think so. think might be in for the long all year. Yeah, it might be a really long year for me. We'll see. Alex, what about you between the Giants and the Yankees? Which of these are two teams you think will have the better record when we come back? Whichever team has, you know, monkey never cry.
01:10:00
Speaker
Thank you. Very insightful. Liam, you got anything you want to plug before we go? i'm and not Nothing right now. I just kind of want, I don't know. Neither do I. We'll see you guys in the next two weeks.
01:10:11
Speaker
See you guys. Goodbye.
