Yankees' Post-Season Overview
00:00:16
Speaker
Hello and welcome to Two Front Floor, a podcast that will be covering not just the Yankees post-season run, but now their World Series run. I'm answering with me as always, this is Liam. Liam, they did it. Spit in my mouth, let's go, Yanks. Okay, I won't be doing that. At least not on recording.
00:00:35
Speaker
um They did it. Another extra indians game ten innings 10 innings.
00:00:45
Speaker
who Who else to do it? But Juan Soto has the most money on
Juan Soto's Impact and Rodon's Start
00:00:51
Speaker
the line. um Yes, Juan Soto. Juan, he is him Soto. i But before we get to that, you want to talk about the stuff leading up? Of course I do. All right, Liam. So we had a Carlos Rodon start. Yes. um And well, I guess before we even get to Rodon, let's talk about the the first inning.
00:01:15
Speaker
that they had an aggressive Yankees. Glaber. Yeah, Glaber gets up with a ah ah single. Juan Soto comes up. um Nice hit. Sends Glaber to third, but the third base Yankees are based coach decides go home, go home and Glaber is thrown out at home and the Yankees do not. ah do do not they threaten and something that you you hear a lot if you're a Giants fan is that they threatened but do not score for five innings yes uh even at one point in the uh that first inning actually uh where jazz gets hit by a pitch and the bases become loaded and they they fell to to score their guardians uh scoring the first or the second inning i believe
00:02:15
Speaker
Um, and, uh, take the lead, uh, for that first half of the day, they maintain the lead for the first half, the first five innings, guardians in the lead Yankees are shut out. Uh, Rodan had a pretty good start. I would say, uh, he had, he had six strikeouts and but only pitched 4.2 innings. And that, that is the problem with 84 thrown four.
00:02:46
Speaker
a starting rotation that has not, has been iffy on going at least five innings, preferably like six.
Analyzing Rodon's Performance
00:02:56
Speaker
yes This was not a bad start. No, it would not. And I wouldn't even put Rodan's, I think he got pulled out a little early, honestly. I don't think the i don't think it was really his his fault that he only goes to 4.2. There were some, I mean, the nobody was given an error, but I think that there were some,
00:03:19
Speaker
Unfortunate like just unfortunate hits and it's gonna be more luck than than Than like he's falling apart out there. Mm-hmm. No, he gives up five hits two runs one walk six six K's But uh, I mean he after that after his first start not a I think anything anything less than what he did that first time, it was going to not look as good. But ah I don't know, like postseason is different. And I don't think he I don't think he had that bad of a start. All things considered. Actually, i watching watching I was kind of like. Come back, my sweet prince. Yeah, I I got I got a little bit over the the last season.
Hit by Pitch Debate
00:04:14
Speaker
about Rodan and this is the season where I think man if only and judge in the the first thing talk about his line score real quick he goes 0 for 4 two strikeouts but he does get hit by a pitch in the first inning 96 mile an hours to the ribs turning into as he goes for a swing that was very much going to be a strikeout so he kind of lucked out there he him and baby had a uh... few words exchange nothing bad it was just like by the apologizing judgment like that don't worry about it and then uh... boom and the trainer try to come out to the judge he immediately ways away and they turn around so fast uh... does a hit by pitch not count as a wall also comes over it does not come as a walk it does not come as a walk for the the header does not count as a walk by for the picture as by the was uh... his life score has zero walks
00:05:17
Speaker
Which I thought yeah, I know like that's kind of weird, right? I think it should at least count as a walk for the hitter I'd say that much. Oh See, I disagree. I think it should count as a walk for the the pitcher. and Okay, I Think or maybe it it should just you should just count for a walk then Yeah, I mean that too I mean if you're I mean if you're not gonna count it as a as a walk like a true walk and which I guess because like you know it stands for based by balls so I get it why you want to count it under BB but maybe it should have its own category like only shows up when it happens um that was something that could have quickly I think devolved into benches clearing but I think the reason it didn't was because one it was the first inning elimination game for the Guardians like why would you
00:06:14
Speaker
why would you put three dudes on on the base with that, right?
Naylor Brothers' Historic Hits
00:06:20
Speaker
Because at that point, it's just like, if if because if it was on purpose, it's like, OK, so then you you've kind of given up the series. Like, you think you're going to lose this one. So you're just inventing your frustrations. But that's not what it was. And it was a pretty respectable, respectable game for the. After that, no one, ah no no one getting her own purpose.
00:06:46
Speaker
uh... very exciting for sending all things considered despite the the fact that the in keys didn't uh... didn't score uh... the only thing that i had uh... after that was in the bottom of the second that's what it was it was uh... rodon uh... josh naylor gets walked no no he doesn't get walked uh... but josh naylor gets onto to the base ah and then his eventually his brother boat pops up i believe it was two outs uh... man bow nailer just grinded that out is ten pitches ten pitch at bat uh... leads to uh... an rb i with with uh... bow nailer or with uh... josh nailer scorn uh... funnel funnel fact is uh... they talked on the broadcast is that uh...
00:07:38
Speaker
Bo Naylor and Josh Naylor both got hits today in the same inning, which is the first time that's happened in MLB history. In the postseason? In the postseason, yes. Okay. ah can end post Two brothers on the same team didn't hit the same inning. Also another first for Josh Naylor is he got walks not once, but twice. There's his first and second walks in postseason in his postseason history. Yeah, I knew about the first one.
00:08:07
Speaker
so They made a big deal about that. Also, ah t ah TBS broadcast inferior to the true TV broadcast. Really? They had different, they had different announcers or different camera layout. They had different everything layout. The entire an entire the entire side, the on true TV, the entire like Left side of the screen, you get like the lineup, you get a pitch prediction, you get a 3D strike zone. What? Yeah. I had no idea that they were hiding this from from me. yeah I didn't either. And now it's like, now I got to remember that for next year. I thought they were the same broadcast, because they're the same. I thought they were. Yeah, because the same channel. But I was watching on the plane. And for whatever reason, the plane didn't have TBS. They had TNT and true TV, but no TBS.
00:09:02
Speaker
So JetBlue, JetBlue, get on your stuff. Your TVS is broken. But I want a true TV. And I was like, I should have been watching this the whole
TV Broadcast Preferences
00:09:10
Speaker
series. Yeah. So maybe they did it on purpose. They were like, maybe JetBlue was like, nah, true TV. Formerly, I think Court TV was the ah is the best way to view you're your baseball.
00:09:29
Speaker
Then in the sixth inning, the the Guardians are up to zero.
Stanton's Game-Tying Homer
00:09:34
Speaker
And John Carlo does what he does ties the game with a two round homer. and It was a not intelligent.
00:09:45
Speaker
Like. Pitched a place. It was like right down the middle. Like he was just like he got up to three one and I guess that's what he was waiting for. He gave the pitcher a false sense of confidence.
00:09:59
Speaker
and he You just made him pay and I don't know how you get to that point because he's been on fire all series Yeah, he did what he got to do. Yeah the the Funny funny little mind games. I'll go over Stan's line real quick He goes one for four one run two RBI's and three strikeouts Right now he's averaging 294 with a 1.179 OPS He is the AL Championship Series MVP? Oh yes, absolutely for sure. How many games do you think he's responsible for winning? Like, not responsible for winning, but responsible for the Yankees winning, I guess. At least two? At least two, I guess. I see what his postseason war is.
00:10:56
Speaker
he's He's killing it. what ah what ah What a great guy. Someone that you definitely want to have on your team. oh How you feeling in these first five innings, I guess? It's 2-0, going to the sixth. Are you thinking? I don't start worrying until we get into the seventh. Until it's seventh, OK. OK, so as let's say the seventh through the ninth.
00:11:24
Speaker
ah the game's tied. The Yankees failed to score in the ninth inning. How are you feeling? I was sweating when we got into extras.
Soto Secures Yankees' Win
00:11:34
Speaker
Yeah. But I kind of calmed down when you know people got on base and then Soto came up. Because on his life, I know Soto doesn't strike out yeah on this plate appearance. He either does something big or he he gets on base and then Judge comes up after that.
00:11:54
Speaker
I'm only one so out of this lineup I guess or actually for the postseason I guess not this lineup only one player on the Yankees has a better batting average than Juan Soto uh-huh you know I'm gonna predict who it is who is it I'm gonna try and figure it it out don't look at game day no I'm take a swing I'm gonna say Torres No. No. Horace is at 297. It's ah Trevino at batting 500. Jersey's Trevino? Yeah. Well, he's barely been in the series, so hey yeah you got in on one game. Yeah. Hey, I'm playing with some statistics here.
00:12:46
Speaker
Well, yeah, like how many app bets has he add did not talk no two three who always back yeah ah he had? I guess to this game. Actually, no, he didn't. He came in for defense. Yeah, he said it. Yeah, he awesome. Well, he's got pinch run by Dominguez and then Trevino replaces Dominguez for catcher. So then we get to the tenth inning.
00:13:16
Speaker
And you got two dudes making on base. I don't remember who it was. I'll be honest. I was. I was losing. more fa I was losing consciousness fast. That game lasted three and a half hours. I can tell you. And then you actually woke me up. Who but was the announcers? I woke up. I was like, he did it. He did it. And Juan Soto gets a three run homer.
00:13:46
Speaker
Takes a commanding on I would say commanding lead but a pretty strong lead actually I would say commanding lead for the 10th inning You know when once you're an extras you get I think if you got that three-run homer in like the seventh and it was five two I wouldn't be like that's not a commanding lead. That's a pretty good one, but things happen but in the tenth and extras I I would say that's a commanding lead when you give the the other side just one more shot to get three runs in. Mike, I can tell you Austin Wells and Verdugo were the ones that got on base. And then Verdugo, not Verdugo, Wells got pinch ran by Dominguez. OK, OK. That explains it. So he has a pinch run here. Austin Wells gets on base wild.
00:14:33
Speaker
um he He worked a walk. that like thank He needs some plate discipline. Yeah. ah he yeah yeah I mean you can see how far down he's gone in the, he's he's eighth now in the lineup. Kind of feel like it was a little disrespectful towards Verdugo, but I think Verdugo should be eighth. Or no, he was seventh. Awesome was a seventh. No, eighth, yeah, eighth. So I think Verdugo should be eighth. Yeah. Well,
00:15:08
Speaker
He's producing enough, I think, in his current spot. Why fuck with it? Do you think Wells is? For Hugo. OK. So how do you feel after that, that home where you were able to watch it? Were you on the plane? Yeah. Were you listening to the radio? Yeah. I finally got home. I was watching it on my phone. OK. On my phone. And you were partying. You were like, it's over. We won. I was marking out in bed. Marking out in bed. Maya turned over to me. I was like, what the hell are you doing?
00:15:42
Speaker
I did that. And then the the game ends with a with two outs and ah a fly ball to none other than Juan Soto.
00:15:58
Speaker
And the Yankees win 10 innings. Second, the second time they've gone extra and the second extra innings game this postseason.
00:16:09
Speaker
So now they move on.
World Series Preparations
00:16:10
Speaker
They are going to have quite a rest. Quite a rest. I know we talked about this and you're kind of indifferent on the rest, I think. I'm indifferent on ya how it does perform. It should be spending that time. You know, watching film getting to understand their opponent better. Do you think they're focusing? Now, do you think that they should absolutely not be making the same mistake as as the Orioles? And while it looks like that,
00:16:38
Speaker
the the Dodgers are gonna do the favorite to win that like they should still kind of like look at the the Mets. how How would you do it? um I think the Mets are the preferable lineup, especially where they are at right now. But focusing more right now on preparing for the Dodgers will be the smart move.
00:17:03
Speaker
It probably is. They do play again. They do play it tonight. It's game six between six elimination game in L.A. um
00:17:15
Speaker
And game one of the World Series, October 25th, which is going to be real rough for for us because I leave on the 25th back to you. Oh, yeah. um We might be able to squeeze in a ah ah recording. Mm hmm.
00:17:31
Speaker
um It all depends if I oh I can't stop for them. I'm gonna have two dogs. So you might have to pick up on the 26 Game one of the two but they you know that's for later first to figure out later um But yes game one of the World Series will be the 25th It might be back that day might be back on the 26th. We'll see who it is um You want to do a prediction on for each each of those nationally teams as in So like let's say that it's you versus Dodgers, Yankees versus Dodgers.
Predicting World Series Outcomes
00:18:06
Speaker
Who wins? And how many games? Seven. OK, so you think it's OK. And what about the Mets? Yankees in five. In five, OK. I hope. Yeah, five. Six. Yankees in six. Yankees in six, OK. OK, so lu okay give a little bit more respect to the Mets there. Yeah.
00:18:30
Speaker
um Again, Carlos Mendoza knows the Yankees, so he... Yeah, true. I think he wanted a Yankees. If he were to make it to the World Series, he'd want a Yankees matchup over your Guardians matchup. Hmm. Guess I'm revenge. Mm-hmm. All right. Well, I think that'll do it for this episode. What do you think? Anything else you want to talk about? Uh... All right, let's talk about judging. Luke Weaver kept him in there for two innings. Yeah. Pitch great. Mm-hmm.
00:19:01
Speaker
You talk about Judge old Luke Weaver. Yeah, he goes. He also gets to the win. He he only gave up ah across those two innings, one hit and he got one strike up. No locks. Judge goes over for four two strikeouts. Currently being 161. Do you think that he's. I think one, the the fact that the Yankees have. Have been able to kind of go without him.
00:19:32
Speaker
Being able to like produce in the way that you think that he was going to produce or hope that you produce. so yeah Which is how the team should be built. Yes. um But I mean, the fact that he's being supported by both Soto and Stanton.
00:19:45
Speaker
um I would say even even Rizzo there for a little bit. Rizzo Glaber's getting on base. Yep, Glaber. That if if Judge is able to unlock it and the in the World Series, which... They be they can run em away with this if he's there. I think it's over. I think that he's probably not going to. I don't think that there's... It only gets more stressful from here. I don't think it's stress that's doing it. you what What do you think it is? Is it just that like overthinking or the teams are putting more effort into him than the others?
00:20:17
Speaker
Probably the the Guardians did. They probably did do that. He also tried to work with the royals. He did. He did. So he came around in the end. People forget about that. And he was a presence in the start of the series too. So they, they found the royals went in preparing for a judge and then it kind of like petered de away after a while. And then the guardians found out that they had to lock him down of everyone. If they want to, if they want some quick innings, they want to have a chance. Yeah. Um,
00:20:55
Speaker
Let's hope that he yeah unlocks it and it just gets it all figured out for the World Series. and they they can They can run away with it. They can run away with it. Yeah, definitely. I mean, once again, like i the the Yankees today or for last night's game went two for six with Risp and they left four on base. And I as a fan of the Giants who was who were terrible with Risp and horrible was leaving guys on base.
00:21:25
Speaker
Those those lose games. Not getting people in this loading the bases and not being able to bring one person in is. You're going to be looking at that and being like. That lost us the game, this first inning bases load is loaded, lost us the game and. You don't that you do not want that. You do not want that at all. and All right. ah Anything else you want to talk about before we go?
00:21:56
Speaker
I'm so happy I want to put that on the
