Speaker: Welcome to The Bean Talk with me, Rhiannon, your fertility fairy godmother, joined by my trusted partner in life and in the mission of Mungbean Health, Jeremy. Here at Mungbean Health, we're on a mission to unlock the secrets of fertility and natural wellbeing one episode at time.
Speaker: Hi guys, and welcome back to The Bean Talk with Rhiannon and Jeremy. Welcome back. We are... Going good, but crazy busy at the moment. Lots of things happening in the background. We've got actually a super exciting thing that's meant to be here today. Is it here today? No, because that is business. We'll be here soon, yes. I know. That is business for you.
Speaker: If you like stress, open a business. It's the key to being living a stressful life. Lucky we've got herbs. I can't imagine doing this without herbs. And nutrients to this going. Yeah.
Speaker: L-theanine, check. Withania, check. Cedron Foley. Check, check. I love it. But things have been going at an astronomical pace over here. We've been having a lot of things. I feel like not a lot of it's at the front, at the forefront at the moment, but it's like coming. But lots of things working on in the background.
Speaker: Yeah, all the time. All the time. And now it's going to bubble over. But it's been a big week. ah we've just It's Monday today, so we've just finished the weekend, went down to our beautiful Girls Market. Yes. yeah Thank you. we Veggie Challenge. you know what I picked this week?
Speaker: cabbage asparagus asparagus nice got some asparagus i did tell you but the kids are just being psycho so was like whatever i'll tell you one person concentrated one thing and the other person on the kids we forgot the carrots though we got the dutch carrots though we just didn't get the normal carrots because the the dutch carrots go into like nothing when you peel them so i usually just chuck them in the um oven and we have them like roasted but the kids just love the plain carrots peeled if you don't know what the dutch carrots are they're just the mini carrots with the Storks. Storks on. yeah Yeah. Very much like little Peter Rabbit vibes. yeah They're very cute. And they're tasty. They're so much sweeter. Yeah, they are sweeter.
Speaker: But, yeah, back on the – I'm excited to see some of the summer fruits are coming, the watermelon. Yes. First time watermelon was there. The watermelon was so – we finished it off. And we didn't miss out. and We didn't miss out either because there's a little bit of a running joke. It's hard to get Jeremy out of bed. I think we've spoken about this before. and Especially in the mornings. But Jeremy's like, got to get your apples, got to get your apples. And I'll tell you, I'm not in a good mood if we miss those apples. Yeah.
Speaker: ah because they just last so good. Anyway, that's enough. The growers market's so crap. Don't ever go, please, because there'll be nothing left for us. We'll have to get there earlier and earlier. Yeah, and then you'd just be killing me. Find your local growers market because it definitely is amazing. For one, you're supporting the farmers because it's direct. Yes. Yep.
Speaker: Secondly, you're supporting your health, which everyone wants to do. Yes. And you're getting the best fresh produce you can. Yeah. um The only other one that I recommend to get delivered is dimples. Right.
Speaker: which are an easy way to get it delivered to your door. But the only downfall with them that I struggle with is like with any ordering online, you need to be organized. I've got so much going on in my life. I've so already like like closing at 2pm and I'm like, oh crap, I've got a i've got to quickly go and order. But usually I'm like in a consult or in a meeting or something. So that's the only thing that I um struggle with. But the it's good.
Speaker: Yeah, it's great. Yeah, dipples is really good. If you can't make it to the growers' morning growers's market in the morning, because you need to get up early to get there because these farmers, they're not joke. Crack of dawn, they're there, ready, and then they sell out by 10 o'clock, they're done. I know, you've got to be there.
Speaker: What else has been going on? Kit's growing nice and chunky. He's a little fatso. He's going well. And being that it's been like winter, He gets like little you sweat gross skin in between these like crevices and he got one on the back of his leg. It's just like redness. It's just we it just because he's rugged up and like a lot of rolls. Yes, he's got his sweat gets caught in there. So you need to powder him up with the cornstarch. My mom gave us some cornstarch to, you know, natural get away from that. um
Speaker: Talcum powder, talcum powder. Not good. What's been happening with that, with the asbestos and bad fibers in there? Yeah, and also um just bad chemicals and shit. know exactly that. Don't put them baby skin.
Speaker: So we've just been doing the cornstarch, which is so great for taking that moisture away from rest. And the other kids weren't as, like, fat and rolly, so we didn't have to do as much. But, yeah, he got, little like, this little redness behind his leg. And he always gets it under his neck because he's a vomiter as well. He's a little – he's a happy guy. He'll smile at you and vomit in your face at the same time. It's so cute, though.
Speaker: So, yeah, he's keeping us busy and, yeah. But, yeah, we got something super exciting coming for Sproutling. Hopefully by the time this is released next week. We'll already be here, which is so cool. So, yeah, make sure you go and check out Sproutling.
Speaker: What's been good? What's been happening? Oh, actually, you know what I've been very good at, which I actually shared about this on Mung Bean, is doing our little health shot. So in the morning, starting the day with lemon water, I love it. It's such an age-old beautiful way to just support your digestion, your liver,
Speaker: Lemon. It's amazing. Vitamin C. Immune. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Could go on about it forever. her But I've been healthifying that, supercharging that and making it into little shots. And I've been doing this for like all of winter. yeah I've done it before, but I've just been really consistent of doing it every week um because it does take a little bit of time to prepare, but it's so worth it. It is. And I feel like these foods are like longevity. So...
Speaker: Ginger. Turmeric. Fresh. Turmeric. Fresh. Beetroot. Yep. I missed that out for last week, but I've chucked that back in. It's so good. So beautiful. What else? Orange. ah Yeah, I put a couple of orange, which are fruit trees. They're blooming.
Speaker: Lots of oranges. So good. I just want to make them sweeter. They're good, but I want them to be, like, real sweet where you're, like, i can't get enough of them. The kids love them. um Lemon. Lemon. Lemon.
Speaker: I put the i put the um the recipe and the little reel on my Instagram, mungbean underscore health. So go and check that out. But it's just a little shot every day and I've been starting the day with it. Oh, a bit of cayenne pepper as well to get things fired up. Spring's coming.
Speaker: I am postpartum and I'm carrying... a little more, couple more kgs than I normally would outside of being postpartum. And I'm not worried about that. Although I do want to get ready for spring and just feel my best. I just feel like I'm ready to like get back into it. The weather is warming up and the clothes are coming off. Exactly. Jackets are off. The t-shirts are on. I can't wait for the dresses to be on. Yeah. But that actually really just like I guess leads us into our episode today. Yeah, all about postpartum. But should Little Bean, Big Bean. I mean that is Little and Big Bean. know, I feel like we covered that. The growers market, the morning shots, the supercharged shots. Have you had yours today? Yep.
Speaker: Good boy. And also I feel like ah the pulp that you save, you use that in hot tea. So if it is still cooler. um One thing that I really want to get into is green tea more. Like obviously we've got some in the cupboard and You know, but I really want to get a good quality leaves green tea. And I want to be having like a couple of cups a day. So if you've got a favorite brand, I might ask this on stories as well. What's your favorite brand brand of green tea? That's good quality stuff.
Speaker: um But yeah, today we're talking about the most overlooked, yet one of the most important stages of motherhood journey, the fourth trimester, postpartum, which is so beautiful because we're both in that.
Speaker: 100%. my body goes through a couple more changes than you, but the sleep deprivation is real. yes And you know you want to be your healthiest and fittest to be there and show up for your family. Exactly. So that's why it's so important to make sure you're doing everything that you possibly can to be yes fit and healthy. Exactly. And even just like with the kids now, they're at the age where like they really want to play and have fun and like jump on the trampoline and those sort of things. And I feel like when obviously when I was like pregnant, i couldn't do that. And like I wouldn't like run after them in pregnancy or whatever. But now I'm like, what excuse have I got? i yo to
Speaker: I need to get moving. That's right. So when people think about pregnancy, so much attention is placed on growing a healthy baby, and rightly so. There are so many appointments, scans, supplements, nutrition advice, birth classes, the list goes on.
Speaker: But what happens after we birth? The focus shifts almost entirely to the baby, while mum's expected to just recover, adapt, feed a newborn, function on very little sleep and somehow just bounce back, which bounce back culture in itself is a freaking nightmare. yeah The truth is...
Speaker: The postpartum period deserves so much care, planning and support as pregnancy itself. You should be supporting yourself just as much, if not more.
Speaker: Because while your baby has just been born, your body, hormones, mind and nervous system have just entered one of the biggest transitions of your life.
Speaker: So today, what are we going to talk about? we're talking about why the fourth trimester matters so much. Yes. How everything you do before and during pregnancy supports this stage. Yes.
Speaker: What is actually happening in your body after birth. Yeah. And how to nourish yourself So you can recover well, support your hormones and thrive alongside your baby. Yes, I love that. Thrive alongside your baby. Because a healthy baby starts with a healthy mama.
Speaker: But that doesn't stop once they're born. Okay, you need to still be supporting yourself postpartum. So what is the fourth trimester? The fourth trimester refers to the first few months after birth. And look, it actually lasts much longer than people think. So even though I'm saying, you know, I'm postpartum, technically three months postpartum is when the doctors will cut you off. You're on your own. You're not postpartum anymore.
Speaker: but that's crazy because the baby needs support up until it's like, what, one and a half months to two years, basically. Yeah. And postpartum, if you don't support yourself, all that nutrient depletion.
Speaker: it It takes a lot longer than you think. Like there's a human that's just solely dependent on its parents. Exactly. And it took so long to grow that baby. Why can't it take at least that long to recover? Well, they do. They do a lot of growing outside as well. I know exactly all that breastfeeding. God, that little gut's cute. He's a little, he gorges himself. He's little fat, little dumpling head. He's so cute. I'll have to bring him in here and show.
Speaker: Although your baby is no longer growing inside of you, your body is still doing an incredible amount of work, as we just said. Your uterus is healing. Your hormones are rapidly shifting. Your pelvic floor is recovering. That's why you should be horizontal for a lot of it.
Speaker: Your brain is adapting to motherhood. Actually, i was hearing someone else talking about this, about our hormones and how your brain shifts with every baby you have and you're having to relearn. So you're very much more protective and obviously like taking care of this baby. And so much has changed. Your sleep changes dramatically. That's the big one for everyone. I mean, it probably affects me, but would probably affect both fathers. Yeah, absolutely. sleep deprivation. If you're a hands-on father, which I definitely am. Absolutely. like Try and take some of the, you know, stresses oh yeah and strain from the mother so she can recover. Thanks. And, yeah, do what you can. Love you. Love you too. um And if you're breastfeeding as well, that's a whole other ballpark. Your body's also producing the perfect food for your baby every single day. It's one of the most physically.
Speaker: mentally and emotionally demanding periods a woman can experience, yet many women feel completely unprepared for it. The work starts essentially before pregnancy. And you should be. Like if you are thinking about preconception, you should really do as long as you can to make sure that the recovery is better and but is starting 12, two years even, but we like to say three months, but it should be longer. Like it should be a minimum of three to six months. Yeah, you should be trying to conceive way before you actually conceive. like Yeah, doing the things. Preparation is key on everything.
Speaker: The more you prepare for something, the better the outcome. So true. Especially with painting, it was all in the preparation. That's true. And even more with a healthy baby. Exactly. Baby. One thing we're incredibly passionate about, if you can't tell, is about preparing women before they conceive. That is where Spratling itself came from, yeah and men and women. So people often think preconception care is only about improving fertility, but that's only one part of the picture. Everything we work on before pregnancy is also laying the foundation for postpartum recovery. Healthy nutrient stores, yeahp balanced hormones, stable blood sugar, reduced inflammation, optimal thyroid function, healthy iron levels,
Speaker: a nourished nervous system. That's big one. Good gut health as well. I guess they don't just support conception of pregnancy. They determine how resilient your body is after birth as well.
Speaker: Yeah. Think of pregnancy like running a marathon and a big marathon at that for so many. And yeah, if you don't like prepare prepare for the race, like a big marathon, your body won't be in a position where it can even finish it. Exactly. Exactly. You'll be under fueled, exhausted,
Speaker: That sounds horrible. Yeah. But people do prepare for ages for crazy marathons when they're going to their body under stress. It's the same thing in pregnancy. You're putting your body under a lot of stress. Exactly.
Speaker: and Pregnancy and birth ah place enormous demands on the body, right? And the stronger your nutritional foundations beforehand, the more resources your body has available when recovery begins. Yep.
Speaker: Pregnancy is preparing you as well. So throughout pregnancy, your body is constantly adapting. Some of the cool facts. Yeah. Your blood volume increases, your nutritional needs increase, your immune system changes. It fully shifts to allow this little embryo to actually attach an implant and grow. Because otherwise your body's like, oh, wow, get out of here. yeah Which happens for a lot of women, unfortunately, but you need to allow that to happen um to help your body. your metabolism shifts The hormones.
Speaker: They rise to support your growing baby. Every vitamin, mineral, protein, healthy fat and antioxidant you're consuming is supporting two people.
Speaker: Actually, the health shot that I've been making up that we were talking about, perfect for preconception as well because the beetroot, so good, so high in antioxidants and great ginger in that for your your hormones as well. But but but the important thing too to remember um vitamins, minerals, protein, healthy fats and antioxidants for men is also just as important because that's half of where the DNA is coming from. Exactly.
Speaker: and So that's why Cedra for him is so important to take. I know. To give your baby the best possible chance of a healthy life. Literally why it was designed. Exactly. Your baby will always take priority.
Speaker: If your nutrient stores become depleted, which is so common, your body gives it to your baby first. That's why so many women experience postpartum depletion.
Speaker: It's not because they did anything wrong. It's about pregnancy and birth and how they're incredibly demanding, which really you'd have it no other way. You would absolutely give your last bite to your children. yeah But you also want to keep a bit for yourself. And there are things you can do. That's what you don't have to be suffering.
Speaker: Let's talk about the hormonal shift after birth. One of the biggest hormonal changes that women will ever experience happens with hours after delivery. It does. It happens very fast after the baby is born. During pregnancy, hormones like progesterone are incredibly high. Funny that we're talking about like after birth, they fall dramatically.
Speaker: Quick little interlude with this little fatty bum. Hello, I'm hungry and want to eat some food. So... speaking of the nutritional demands of breastfeeding that's good timing but yes let's get back into because obviously after birth your hormones drop very suddenly and very dramatically it's completely normal for this to happen but you just don't feel that way depletion so it does explain though i guess why women experience these emotional and down that roller coaster in those first few days a week sounds in the background because there's so much happening and it's Similar to like why women will get like baby blues or postpartum anxiety or depression. The baby blues only last a couple of days where depression or anxiety can last lot longer. So I guess just knowing the difference between the two and getting the whole baby. So it does explain though, I guess, why women experience these emotional and down. That hormones are dropping. That also is happening. because there's so much happening and it's similar to rising. Rising for milk production. Yeah, and then your oxytocin supports bonding. The baby blues only last a couple of days where depression or anxiety can last a lot longer. I'm sorry, just knowing the difference between the two and getting help with and physical recovery laughing at the same time that your hormones are dropping what else is happening mom's under constant stress under eating which is so common i'm supported yeah this hormonal balancing act becomes much harder yeah recovery is obviously more than just cortisol often remains elevated deprivation and physical recovery laughing because i feel that But recovery is definitely so much more than that. Obviously, that's part of it. But your pelvic floor has just carried the weight of pregnancy as well. Your abdominal muscles have stretched significantly. Your connective tissue needs more time to regain its strength as well.
Speaker: yeah but and yours nervous system has just offered and i think about stitches labor or birth you insanely but recovery is definitely so much and now around the part of that but your pelvic floor has just carried as layer ofly pregnant wiring as your ab dominal muscles have stretch totally changing and recovering and it needs full swing regain many women rate's a gradual process And your nervous system has just experienced pregnancy, birth And now around So many women are having that. That's why nourishment matters more than ever.
Speaker: One of the biggest misconceptions is that one baby's born, mum no longer needs to focus on nutrition process or supplements. In reality, this may be when nutrition matters most. Your body is repairing tissue, replacing blood loss, supporting hormone production, producing breast milk, healing muscles matters more than One of the biggest misconceptions is that once baby's born, no longer needs to focus on nutrition or supplements. In reality, this may be when nutrition matters first. Your body is repairing tissue, replacing blood loss, supporting hormone production, producing breast milk, healing muscles and connective tissue, trying to maintain energy dysfunction.
Speaker: Vitamin D for immune and bone health. Absolutely. Absolutely. Key nutrients remain incredibly important during this time. Protein for healing and Calcium and magnesium for muscles, bones, and nervous stores. Omega-3 fats for brain health and mood.
Speaker: Iodine and selenium for your thyroid health. Because that's just been unalienable. Vitamin D for immune and bone health. The importance of rest and breastfeeding as well. celebrates am a i've been hustled into that as well gentle movement time to do we definitely need to exercise extra time pelvic floor rehabilitation a bit of actual strength rebuilding no rush getting back resting exercise for us not trying to earn back but biologically your body is asking there's more to it than just resting it asks about just slowing down and doing healing those support gentle movement time he has just done soing or even exercises hungry de he <unk>halitation mental health strength rebuild recovery no rush getting back into high forcemetic size and not trying to earn back it or bring enormous emotional so doesn't more to it then just rest joy imagine slowing down and doing all those shifts amazing things anxiety Your body has just extraordinary. recovery definitely And this is when a pregnancy goes well. Unfortunately, we experience it on the first hand. It still brings enormous emotional change. Joy, overwhelm.
Speaker: times things away well but you still to go through a postpartum yeah And that just obviously brings up grief, real grief, or more anxiety. grief Like only since losing Winnie did I really start to experience more anxiety. And this is when a pregnancy goes obviously on top of it and great now, but I still notice if I overdo stimulants, like I can't have real coffee now. Unfortunately, sometimes things don't go well, you've still got I do get anxious by the evening and that just obviously brings up grief, real grief or more anxiety. It's just a body, my physical, mental connection. yeah anxiety um But every so I still it's important to of the healthiest do
Speaker: I do get anxious by the evening and I took a while to realise I'm like, what the hell is going on now? But it's just a body, my physical, mental connection. No one was designed to navigate early. But every mother's experience is so different here. And that's why asking for help isn't weakness. It's important to reach out. It's one of the healthiest things you can actually do for yourself. Support from partners, family, friends, healthcare providers and your community makes a really difference.
Speaker: just because your baby is here. Looking after yourself isn't taken away from your baby. It's one of the greatest gifts you can give. Even though many women do. When you're nourished, when you're supported, when you're recovering well, our entire family benefits. Healthy mums raise healthy families. So if you're pregnant now, haven't stopped being in a family just because your baby is here. Looking after yourself isn't taken away from your baby. You deserve nourishment and you deserve support because the fourth trimester isn't just about caring for the newborn. It's about caring for the woman who brought them into this world, which is so beautiful and such a huge thing. So if you're pregnant now, planning a family or currently in the postpartum season, remember this. You deserve care. You deserve nourishment. and you deserve support because the fourth trimester isn't just about caring for the newborn. It's about caring for the woman who's brought the baby to this world. Yes, healthy babies and healthy mums and it's such a huge thing. And just caring for yourself and getting that extra support from preconception is key. And that's literally why we designed the signature family. partner, the man, he doesn't have to stop because it's amazing for testosterone, energy, stamina, physical wellbeing, as well as sperm health, libido.
