Speaker: Welcome to The Bean Talk with me, Rhiannon, your fertility fairy godmother, joined by my trusted partner in life and in the mission of Mungbean Health, Jeremy. Here at Mungbean Health, we're on a mission to unlock the secrets of fertility and natural wellbeing one episode at time.
Speaker: Hello and welcome back to another episode of The Bean Talk with Rhiannon and Jeremy. Hi guys and welcome back. We've been working out. If you listened to our other episode...
Speaker: you Maybe just last time. yeah You would have known we joined the gym. We've been working out. We're sore. Tired. Just another thing to add in there. I know, but it's so good. i actually feel really good about it. Yeah, me too. We did a scan, which was so cool. It was very, a bit nerve wracking to start with because I haven't been in the gym for a while. you haven't been using my muscles to their full potential.
Speaker: And it's like the, ah I don't know what it's called, but it's like the DEXA scan. yeah You hold the little things, you stand on their barefoot, sends little electrodes through you. Yeah. yeah doesn't hurt or anything. No. And then it tells you. It emotionally hurt. It's not if you see the result. yeah Actually, it tells you like your left arm to right arm, muscle mass. Like it's very and specific. Yeah, it's in depth. Send you a full report. It's like your legs, if they're, I guess, if you need to work one harder than the other. yeah Belly fat.
Speaker: Visceral fat. Overall fat. Yeah. What else? Bones. Bones, yeah. How much are bones weight? Mine's like 39 kilos. Mine's like 20-something, which is crazy. And then your muscle mass, then your fat content, your water. Told you everything. It's really cool. So we're going to do it again in like another month. See where we're at. See where we're at. overall, not bad starting point. Actually, we're pretty good. He was like, yeah, that's pretty Yeah, the guy was like, yeah, healthy considering you haven't been like working out and lifting muscle. I think it was one of your one sides a bit weaker. Yeah, my left side is bit weaker because of broken leg. Jeremy had an accident at one point and hurt his leg. Yeah.
Speaker: So my left side is a little bit weaker. Yes, which makes sense though. Yeah. I think both mine were like similar-ish. Yeah. And obviously I'm carrying a little bit more belly fat than I normally would because just had a baby. It's just that stomach's going back in.
Speaker: That's my excuse anyway. Good excuse. Yeah, not the extra dark chocolate at night. ah No, no. But, yeah, it was really cool to actually see. So if you haven't done a scan like that, you should if your gym offers it or I think you can go to places that do Yeah.
Speaker: I've seen them before. Remember they used to have them in the toilets at the supermarkets? Do you remember that? No. The Weight Watchers ones and you'd get on. I think it was just the scales though. Gosh. The 90s was so...
Speaker: what do you call like the 90s, 2000s was like so toxic for that, like the fat shaming and like the foods and stuff. Like you wouldn't be like everything was like fat free and fat was the enemy and fat, fat, fat. Do you remember that? Yeah, yeah. The show The Biggest Loser. Yeah, actually.
Speaker: Okay. it's actually so toxic when you think about like everyone, all the families like watch it together they're like, oh, you didn't lose it up. I guess at the end of the day, it's an amazing end because it's like you're literally like everything.
Speaker: Yeah, make yourself healthier. Yeah, losing weight and making yourself – and obviously they've gone on the because they're not feeling their best. Yeah. But I'm all about now, and I guess i always have been, is like for everybody, is like making yourself feel your best. Yeah. you should be happy with what you're like seeing in the mirror. No one's perfect. So like everybody is a little bit different. You know, some women are a bit more curvy. I remember at one point like my legs, i was like – I remember when i was a young girl, was like, why are my legs a bit like – more round than some. They're like my friends and stuff that might have been a bit more muscular, but they're nice and squishy.
Speaker: And that's why I'm in the gym, making them stronger. No, no. But I just remember like, you know how you're different? like Yeah, of course. Everyone's different. Like it's like I look at even the kids, yeah, like even the kids, like the butt compared to like their abs and like Evie's like a little string bean. Yeah.
Speaker: Don't you reckon? Yeah. You do naturally. Anyway, but it's more about how you feel, how your clothes feel. Yeah, how you feel inside and and how you feel. And confident and just like feel good in yourself, which definitely I feel like exercising helps because it's all about those positive endorphins as well.
Speaker: Little bean, big bean. Well, that is my little big bean. Little big bean. Yeah, because yeah joining the gym, it's the heart they say the hardest thing is walking through the door, which is quite true. Like once you're there in the environment, and you just get into it. You're there, you may as well use your time.
Speaker: Yeah, efficiently. I feel like at the moment as well, like Rome is, not Rome, Kit. There's so many of them now. It's hard to keep up. Kit is like not sleeping his best and he's like waking up early. Yeah. um He's just going through some growth spurts and learning. So cute. He does his little flappy arms. And yeah, like you go to bed too late.
Speaker: what you go to bed too late way too like so i feel like that doesn't help either but yeah we're just like um we're really just trying i feel like when we go into summer and go into the new year we're going be feeling good no new year new me new year save me same know same me but also a bit new year same me ah feel feeling better though ah We also have something really exciting happening this week, which is also another big bean, which I guess we can talk about because by the time this episode's out, yeah you heard it here first, you'll see that we have our own release of...
Speaker: Nourish Omega, yeah which is our own fish oil, which is so exciting. This has been like, going to say like three and a half years in the making by the time that it's all happened from, it was an idea before that, but I just really love fish oil. Like it's one of my favorite supplements. It's like top, top. Because I know how amazing it is. It's great for your skin. It's great for your inflammation. It's great for your brain, joints, when you're in the gym.
Speaker: It's good for baby making, preconception, anti-inflammatory hair, like oils. I feel like it's just so good. Everyone should be taking this oil. Everyone, unless you're on like serious heart medications. Like always talk to your GP, but you know.
Speaker: It's really important to everyone get fish. We enough fish. People don't eat enough fish or seafood, right? Not only is it super expensive for people, which I totally get, people don't like it, they don't like preparing it at home, can also understand it. But you want to be getting it in because we always talk about how amazing fish oil is, this fatty fish. And we've got the best quality. It is practitioner-only grade quality, but everyone's going to be able to get it you can have fish oil, you can have fish oil, you get you get fish oil. Like Oprah Winfrey giving out fish oil.
Speaker: Exactly. It's going to be so exciting. So by the time you hear it's probably here, which is so cool because we're talking about healthy fats. That's right. Healthy fats. Goes in with the gym, doesn't it? Look at that. Tied it all in together.
Speaker: Fats with a PH. No. We are super excited. That should be here by the time you listen to this. This is meant to be here tomorrow. It was meant to be last week and it was meant to be the week before. So tomorrow I'm hopeful that it will be here, but at least this week. So by the time you listen to this, be sure.
Speaker: Go and check it out. We'll be talking more about it. You might have already seen it on our Instagram if you're following. But fish oil is one of those supplements that I feel like people think it's like just incredibly simple and just like, ah whatever, you don't need it But I guess that's because you walk into a pharmacy or a health food store and you see a shelf full of different omega-3 products and they all seem to say pretty much the same thing, right?
Speaker: High-strength fish oil, omega-3, triple action. But here is the problem. Not all fish oils are equal in quality, dosage, omega-3, or therapeutic efficiency either.
Speaker: What are we going to talk about today? Today we're going to break down exactly what to look out for when choosing a fish oil. Yes. And yeah, it's super, super exciting.
Speaker: um So if you can't tell, I'm just super excited that it's coming finally. I feel like it's too good to be true talking about it, but it's actually happening. So first of all, why take the fish oil? Let's start with the obvious questions.
Speaker: Why take one in the first place? It's very true. We hear a lot about omega-3s, but what actually makes them so important? Omega-3 fatty acids are essential fats, which means that your body needs them for a whole range of different important functions in the body.
Speaker: The two that we hear most about are the EPA and the DHA. And while they work together, they do have slightly different roles in the body. So EPA is involved in cell membranes and in the production of signaling molecules that help regulate processes including inflammation and cardiovascular health or cardiovascular function.
Speaker: DHA. particularly important for structure and function of the brain and the eyes. During pregnancy, DHA is transferred from mum to bub and through the placenta, and it is used extensively in the baby's brain and visual system development, like while it's developing.
Speaker: So when we're talking about preconception and pregnancy, We're not talking omega-3 simply because it's another supplement that might just help us fall pregnant.
Speaker: We're thinking about omega-3 as part of the maternal nutrition and supporting healthy healthy fetal development as well. But omega-3s aren't just important when you're pregnant.
Speaker: It's very true. They're important for throughout your entire life, really. That's why we say most people should be taking them out. They're incorporated into cell membranes throughout the entire body and are involved in normal function of the brain, eyes, heart, and the immune system.
Speaker: There are different ways we can get them. It's true. There are many different ways. You can get EPA and DHA from oily fish such as salmon, sardines, mackerel, and anchovies.
Speaker: Not everyone likes eating oily fish though. Food's great. Amazing place to start. Trying to get someone to eat sardines like pulling teeth.
Speaker: Hate it. They absolutely hate it. Either you like them or you don't. There's some freaks out there that love them. I actually don't mind them. I'm one of those freaks. I don't eat them all the time and I definitely don't eat them enough, but I know my mum, she ate them when we were younger and I would eat them as well. And you always had to have like the better quality ones because, yeah, they get pretty fishy. yeah um But I know there's some people that love them and use them as like food as medicine, which I'm like,
Speaker: Beautiful. Love that. I remember trying Evie on them when she was a kid, when she was like trying foods. She didn't like them, which is so funny because kids usually like everything, but she was like, nah. And I tried her on some salmon. doesn't like fish, which is why she needs fish oil, right? Which I give them, kids fish oil because I'm supporting their little brains.
Speaker: ah But here's the the reality of, I guess that is the reality of that, right? And people aren't eating enough. People don't like it. They don't eat it at all. Like I ask people, how often do you eat seafood or fish?
Speaker: No. No. Oh, don't the last time. And like if you're going out for a seafood platter, hell yeah. And how often do they do that? Exactly. The price. Twice Exactly. Twice a year. yeah Not much. Exactly. Some people then don't even like it. they're like, ew, I can't think of anything worse.
Speaker: And even if you eat fish, you might not be eating enough of the types of fish that provide the meaningful amounts of the EPA and DHA on a regular enough basis. That is why supplements are so useful. People always say supplements don't replace a balanced diet, which that is so right. It's not here to balance your diet. You shouldn't just be popping pills. You should be having a beautiful balanced diet underneath. And then the supplement is to supplement your diet. It's in the name. But you can like supercharge your diet. yeah
Speaker: You can supercharge your results. And you can feel so much better for it, honestly. And that's just from some easy capsules. So filling those nutritional gaps are quite easy when you're supplementing, right?
Speaker: But why not just take any fish oil? It's a good question. This is where things get quite interesting. Because once you've decided you want to take Omega 3, you might think, great, I'll just go grab some from the pharmacy. I've seen them there. They're under the fluorescent lights in the shop. They're in the the bin at the front. You know how they put them in those big bins? Half price.
Speaker: Yeah. big plastic containers that are just like shrunken in. You can get 7,000 capsules in this, half price. We've all seen it. You've been in a health food store, a gym supplement store, mainly the gym and and pharmacies are the worst. yeah Health food stores are usually so much better for it, but i have I have been known to see it. Not all fish oils the same though.
Speaker: You can have capsules that contain 1,000 milligrams of fish oil but provide a relatively small amount of the actual EPA and DHA. Another product might contain the same 1,000 milligrams of total omega-3 with a much higher concentration and DHA.
Speaker: Ours. be
Speaker: Don't forget the name. You can also have differences in the form of the oil, the source of the fish, how it's purified, how it's processed, how it's protected from oxidization, and how stable it remains throughout its shelf life.
Speaker: And this is why we wanted to dedicate an entire episode to choosing the right fish oil. Because if you're going to take something every day, we think it's worth understanding what you're actually taking.
Speaker: And think about it from a food perspective, right? Do you want to eat a beautiful, fresh piece of fish or seafood? Or do you want to eat something that's been in the fridge for a week that stinks and was left out too long? It's rancid. It's starting to go, yeah, rancid. That's way worse. Like fish, even eating fish like sashimi and stuff, like it shouldn't be fishy. When it's fishy, it's starting to go rancid.
Speaker: I've had so many people get turned off fish oil because they've used the cheap stuff. There was also a study, it was many years ago, but it was about the fish oil that's on the market, the crappy stuff, and how it can actually irritate the arteries. And cause inflammation. Cause inflammation, because it's already rancid before it gets to your mouth And that's where supplements are a waste of money because you're buying a cheap quality thing, thinking it's the same quality as an expensive item or a good quality. yeah And then your body is, you're using your body to filter out exactly that crap. Exactly. Unfortunately, there's a, there's been a huge marketing thing on supplements where people will just sell crappy products and
Speaker: Because they want to get a dollar. Yeah, really they're in it for the profit. It's like anything, unfortunately. There's always crappy and there's great. This I can, like, vouch for. This is the fish oil that we will be taking when it finally arrives. And it is, like, practitioner-only grade. Like, we've sourced the same raw material has the practitioner only ranges. And I think everybody deserves to have good quality fish oil. um Yes, obviously go and check with your GP, your health professional, or your naturopath. I'm sure your naturopath already has you on some, but go and check with them because it has to be right for you. But um it's, yeah, like I, it's like
Speaker: everyone really just go and check anyway disclaimer go check especially if you're taking like heart medication or something like that um but amazingly naturally supporting that blood thinning process so it's really good for your cardiovascular system and inflammation yeah so yes our little secret nourish omega yes so let's talk about yes let's talk more about why or what to look for in a good quality fish oil supplement We're, I guess, saving you the trouble of looking through hundreds of bottles at the pharmacy or the health food store. Nourish Omega is the latest supplement to be added to our Sproutling range, which if you haven't, I'm sure you have. If you're listening to our podcast, you would have already heard about our other Sproutling, Folly for Her and Cedra for Him. Now we have another.
Speaker: beautiful little addition, which we're so excited to be adding. It's concentrated omega-3, sourced from anchovies and sardines, and it is provided in a triglyceride form. We didn't want to stop at simply telling you what's in the capsule. We wanted...
Speaker: to think about those why those amounts are there, who might benefit from this, and how you can actually use the product as well. So we wanted to teach you a little bit more about it.
Speaker: um Let's talk about dosage. But before that, we've also made sure that this one is centrifuged for microplastics from the raw material. So... it's another thing you ought to look out for that people don't look out for they just go i'm gonna go get any fish oil but it's like even that you don't want to be taking more microplastics and already in our everything yeah trying to minimize let's talk about dosage let's start with probably the biggest mistake people make they see a product that says fish oil and assume it's the therapeutic dose yeah Fish oil is made up of a variety of fatty acids and the important omega-3s we're generally interested are EPA and DHA. I'm going to say it again, EPA and DHA.
Speaker: So when you're choosing a fish I want you to turn the bottle around and look at the nutritional information. how much fish oil is in the capsule. Might be on the front actually sometimes. it's off Ours is on the front. Ours is on the front. And ask how much EPA and DHA actually might be getting in one capsule. Yeah, how much are you getting in one capsule?
Speaker: For example, you might see a product that says 1000 milligrams of fish oil and you might assume you're getting 1000 milligrams of omega-3, but that's not necessarily the case.
Speaker: With Nourish Omega, we're providing 1,000 milligrams of total omega-3 per dose, including 500 milligrams of EPA yeah and 250 milligrams of DHA. Which is like a really good dose, a healthy dose for you to be taking so you can get those anti-inflammatory benefits. Great for cycle time, great for skin, especially if you've got like that really like angry acne.
Speaker: oh it's so good for that. Or if you've got really dry skin, maybe DHA good for that brain, your brain. Also, if you're trying to conceive, getting ready so you've got enough stores for bub, making sure that when bub's in there and growing, when you do conceive, that you've got enough to keep inflammation down, but also support their little brain and their development and their eyes as well. So you're getting a meaningful concentrated dose of the two omegas we talk about most when we're discussing reproductive health, pregnancy, and general health as well. And importantly, Nourish Omega uses a concentrated triglyceride form of omega-3s sourced from anchovies and sardines, which is absolutely key. We want those small, fatty little guys. We want those little fish.
Speaker: Stability as well. We also wanted to pay attention to something that isn't always obvious when you're buying fish oil. Stability. Omega-3 oils are delicate and susceptible to oxidization.
Speaker: So how the oil is processed and protected throughout its shelf life matters most. It does, yeah, it's important. Nourish Omega is produced using patent technology designed to help preserve the quality of the oil throughout its shelf life. Yes.
Speaker: So when we formulated this product, we weren't simply asking how much fish oil can we fit into one capsule. We were asking how can we provide a meaningful amount of EPA, DHA in a high quality concentrated stable Omega-3.
Speaker: And that's really where the difference is. It is, yes. It's so different. And yeah, it's it you can see when you start manufacturing products or formulating products, you can see why, unfortunately, a lot of people cut corners because it comes down to cost because it is very costly to be providing good quality products. Mm-hmm. And people who are just looking to make money and don't have their heart in it, they're probably not naturopaths, they're just like businesses, they will just go for the cheapest option and that is how supplements can get a bad name. yeah For us, we were like, just like our other Sproutly and Seedra and Foley, we were like, we're not cutting any corners. We want to make sure we're using the best quality in there. The fish oil is so important, like methylated forms obviously in our... um
Speaker: other supplements, but with the fish oil, quality is paramount because you don't want to be ingesting something that's going to make you worse off. So important. So true. So what makes a good fish oil?
Speaker: If you're standing in front of a shelf full of omega-3 supplements, here's what I want you to look for. Don't just look for the biggest number. Look at the actual EPA and DHA content. How much EPA you're getting, how much DHA.
Speaker: The form, is it a triglyceride form or another formulation? The source, like where they're getting the actual oil from. yeah The quality and the purification. What processes are being used to produce and purify the oil?
Speaker: The stability, how the manufacturer is protecting the oil against oxidization throughout its shelf life. And finally, the dose. There's a lot that goes into it. And that's why when you go into a health food store and you look at two and you're like, okay, this one's half price at the moment. I'm getting 7,000 capsules. yeah This one here, I'm getting three capsules and it's triple the price. There's a huge difference in why that is, right? Obviously, you're not getting 7,000 or three capsules, but you know what I mean. How much do you actually need and how many capsules do you need to
Speaker: take to achieve those benefits. Because the product can look really impressive, again, back to that marketing thing on the front of the bottle, but the nutrition panel is where you really find out what you're getting.
Speaker: And this is why the label matters. So next time you're choosing a fish oil, don't just ask how many milligrams it is, ask how many milligrams of EPA and DHA am I actually getting? Obviously, we've done all the hard work for you and you can buy Nourish Amiga because that's the information that really matters. And you're comparing Amiga 3 products. You want to make sure that they are, you're getting the best one out of it. You don't want to just go, oh yeah, they're the same when they're really not. And this is one of the reasons why we are just so proud of Amiga, of our Nourish Amiga product. So good. It's simple, it's concentrated, and it's designed with the quality of the oil in mind and to fit simply into your day-to-day for everyone.
Speaker: But check with your healthcare practitioner. Got to say the disclaimers. But, yes, we're so excited. I think when this is released, you should be able to get it as early as tomorrow. so excited i know so will yes i it's finally here which is so wonderful and i can't wait for you guys to start taking it tell us how much that you're loving it which i know you will if you're in the gym yeah if you've got skin issues if you've got cycle issues painful cycle if you're like acne if you've got dry skin if you've got your sore joints if you're trying to conceive if you're pregnant
Speaker: Postpartum. Postpartum breastfeeding because we want all that beautiful oil to get through the breast milk and into bub. So their little brain can keep processing when they're outside of your body. The list goes on. It just never ends. Honestly, cardiovascular, like it's, think about it like eating really the best quality fatty fish, but without the taste and the the preparation, the preparation, just quickly pop your capsules.
