Introduction to Solarpreneur Podcast
00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome to the Solarpreneur Podcast where we teach you to take your solar business to the next level.
00:00:08
Speaker
My name is Taylor Armstrong.
00:00:10
Speaker
I went from $50 in my bank account and struggling for groceries to closing 150 deals in a year and cracking the code on why sales reps fell.
Understanding Solopreneurship and Goals
00:00:19
Speaker
I teach you to avoid the mistakes I made and bring in the top solar dogs of the industry to let you in on the secrets of generating more leads, falling up like a pro and closing more deals.
00:00:31
Speaker
What is a solopreneur you might ask?
00:00:33
Speaker
A solopreneur is a new breed of solopro that is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve mastery and you are about to become one.
00:00:43
Speaker
What's up solopreneurs?
Maintaining Motivation During Challenging Times
00:00:44
Speaker
Today we're going to be talking about how to access endless motivation, how to never be demotivated and just work like a madman.
00:00:53
Speaker
You probably will still experience demotivation but we're going to talk about some ways to reduce that.
00:01:00
Speaker
My name is Taylor Armstrong.
00:01:01
Speaker
If you're new to the podcast, we are here to make your life easier by closing more deals, generating more leads and referrals, having a much better time in the solar industry.
00:01:10
Speaker
Thanks for making the podcast the first listen of every Tuesday and Friday coming at you.
00:01:16
Speaker
So this topic, it's something I've been thinking about a lot lately because we are going into the off season.
00:01:23
Speaker
We're coming up on the holidays.
00:01:24
Speaker
We're coming up when people typically like to put off their appointments.
00:01:30
Speaker
It gets tricky to work around holidays because of all these factors going on.
00:01:34
Speaker
And with that comes sometimes it's tough to get out there and knock doors or make that phone call, get to those appointments.
00:01:43
Speaker
So I wanted to explore some ways how you can really just have much more motivation.
The Power of Multiple Motivations
00:01:48
Speaker
And I mean, everyone struggles with this.
00:01:50
Speaker
I struggle with it.
00:01:51
Speaker
So even though these things will help, yeah, it's not a magic fail.
00:01:55
Speaker
Okay, you still got to dig deep.
00:01:56
Speaker
You still got to grind.
00:01:58
Speaker
It's still going to suck sometimes.
00:01:59
Speaker
But let's talk about some things that will help.
00:02:02
Speaker
So I've narrowed it down to three things.
00:02:03
Speaker
Some of them we talked about a little bit in the podcast.
00:02:06
Speaker
Some, not so much.
00:02:07
Speaker
Let's get right into it.
00:02:08
Speaker
The first one, number one, everyone's heard finding your why.
00:02:11
Speaker
Okay, and this is cliche.
00:02:13
Speaker
Every time you set a goal, I'm sure you've been to training me and you say, give me your why.
00:02:17
Speaker
Why do you want this goal?
00:02:19
Speaker
But I was reminded of this actually just reviewing a Brian Tracy's book, Psychology is Selling, which classic book if you have not read.
00:02:29
Speaker
But Brian Tracy, he talks about having to-do lists and then not just writing your goals as a salesperson, but all the reasons you have those specific goals.
00:02:39
Speaker
So if you want to make 200 grand, 300 grand, whatever your goal is, if you want to hit 100 sales, get your golden door award, why do you want that goal?
00:02:47
Speaker
You probably have a couple of whys.
00:02:49
Speaker
But what I like about Mr. Tracy, what he says is, a sales manager with just two reasons for achieving his sales goals, saving for a new car and taking a road trip through the mountains.
00:02:59
Speaker
Meanwhile, another sales manager can name dozens of reasons from renovating parts of his house to getting a dog for his kids to taking a family holiday through China and more.
00:03:09
Speaker
While the first salesperson will find himself easily discouraged, the second will be unstoppable.
00:03:14
Speaker
So I was reminded of that because with my goals, yeah, I read it down a couple of whys, but how many whys do you have behind your goals?
00:03:21
Speaker
How many whys do you have for why you're out knocking doors today?
00:03:25
Speaker
Why you're going to that next appointment?
00:03:26
Speaker
If you have a dozen whys, it's going to be way more powerful than just a couple.
00:03:30
Speaker
So this is an exercise that is very useful.
00:03:33
Speaker
Just write down all the whys, make sure you have a lot, and then review them, right?
00:03:38
Speaker
Because if you don't review them, if you don't have your weekly planning, then probably not going to be as effective.
00:03:43
Speaker
So it's something I do every weekly planning session is review those goals and review the whys.
00:03:49
Speaker
Some weeks are better than others.
00:03:50
Speaker
And so that's number one, make sure you have your why.
Action and Environment for Motivation
00:03:53
Speaker
Number two, this is something that's really unique, really cool.
00:03:57
Speaker
And that comes from Mel Robbins.
00:03:59
Speaker
She wrote the five second rule.
00:04:00
Speaker
If you have not read this book, another great book, but the five second rule is this.
00:04:05
Speaker
You count down from five, five, four, three, two, one, and you just do whatever the next thing is.
00:04:10
Speaker
And a way I've used this is I do my cold showers in the morning, recommend it, gets you awake, which by the way right now, it sucks because it's way colder than it was in the summer.
00:04:20
Speaker
I noticed that the cold showers in the summer are warm compared to the cold showers in the winter.
00:04:25
Speaker
And I'm in San Diego, so probably even worse for people where it's actually cold.
00:04:30
Speaker
But when I get in the shower, I feel it with my big toe.
00:04:33
Speaker
It's freezing on my skin.
00:04:35
Speaker
And sometimes I just sit there.
00:04:37
Speaker
I've gone as long as like five minutes just standing there with one toe in the water because I don't want to put my whole body in.
00:04:43
Speaker
And so something I started doing, five second rule when I'm in the cold shower, have five seconds to fill it out and then just jump in, right?
00:04:50
Speaker
And so it can be applied in so many different ways.
00:04:53
Speaker
Cold showers, but also in selling, right?
00:04:56
Speaker
So if you're in the car, if you're sitting in the car right now,
00:04:58
Speaker
You don't want to get out and knock or you don't want to make that call.
00:05:01
Speaker
You don't want to follow up with that person.
00:05:03
Speaker
You don't want to send the email, whatever it is.
00:05:05
Speaker
Countdown, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
00:05:08
Speaker
So go read the book if you want to hear more about it.
00:05:10
Speaker
One of my favorite mantras or affirmations is repeat on the doors.
00:05:15
Speaker
First comes the action, then comes the motivation, right?
00:05:19
Speaker
And so some of our guests have talked about that, the things you tell yourself on the doors.
00:05:23
Speaker
So that is a great thing to repeat.
00:05:25
Speaker
First comes the action, then comes the motivation as you get out there.
00:05:28
Speaker
Okay, and then number three, be in the right environments and develop intrinsic motivation.
00:05:34
Speaker
Okay, and so, yeah, we've talked about it several times, but you are the average of the five people you surround yourself with.
00:05:41
Speaker
So some of the times where it's toughest for me to be motivated is if I'm out there just trying to
00:05:46
Speaker
ride solo, I don't have a team behind me, I don't have people having my back, it's tough.
00:05:52
Speaker
So what I would recommend, if you are not part of a team, or if you don't have that push behind you, if you're not part of a group, I would recommend joining a program such as, Noxstar is a great one, we've had them on the podcast, we've got a program here called Solciety,
00:06:07
Speaker
which we're still doing some sales audits.
00:06:10
Speaker
If you want to hear a little bit about the program, see if that'd be a fit for you.
00:06:13
Speaker
Shoot me a DM, shoot me an email, and we're seeing people generate massive results, doubling their sales in that, just because it's about the environment.
00:06:21
Speaker
It's about the group you have behind you.
00:06:23
Speaker
So if you feel like you do not have a strong support group,
00:06:27
Speaker
or maybe you're like a one-man deal or whatever, 100% join something that can help you out with that.
00:06:34
Speaker
Yeah, one of the books I was reading, they talked about Wikipedia.
00:06:38
Speaker
They're saying, Wikipedia, tens and thousands of people write and edit articles for Wikipedia voluntarily out of pure enjoyment.
00:06:44
Speaker
They invest valuable working time in this endeavor and receive not even the lowest material growth in return.
00:06:50
Speaker
Although the growth of Wikipedia was dependent on voluntary writers, the project became an enormous success.
00:06:56
Speaker
So a lot of us think we need to have some sort of extrinsic motivation, but that's what we're talking about here.
00:07:01
Speaker
You need to have that intrinsic motivation.
00:07:03
Speaker
If you can tap into that, it doesn't matter if you're getting paid.
00:07:06
Speaker
It doesn't matter if you're not getting paid.
00:07:08
Speaker
That's why you see people that are, I don't know, selling charity memberships.
00:07:12
Speaker
You see people that are going out and selling religion, missionaries.
00:07:16
Speaker
They're not getting paid, but some of these people have such strong motivation because they're connected with the cause and they have that intrinsic motivation.
00:07:24
Speaker
So if you can figure out a way to get that in solar, connect it to your deeper, deeper wise, you're going to be unstoppable.
00:07:29
Speaker
And I'm just thinking in my own life, this podcast, the reason it's been able to keep going, it's not because of motivation, not because of extrinsic
Host's Intrinsic Motivation and Tips
00:07:37
Speaker
No one's paying me millions of dollars to do this.
00:07:40
Speaker
The benefit is, is I've kept it going.
00:07:43
Speaker
People send me their messages saying it's helped them.
00:07:47
Speaker
That's really the motivation on this.
00:07:48
Speaker
And so the same way that I've had motivation to keep the podcast going,
00:07:52
Speaker
going, you can apply that to your cells, keep your cells going.
00:07:56
Speaker
It's not all about making money.
00:07:57
Speaker
It's about enjoying the process and just putting one foot in front of the other.
00:08:02
Speaker
So that's my three tips with it, with your motivation.
00:08:04
Speaker
Number one, find that why and not just one or two whys.
00:08:08
Speaker
Try to get a dozen.
00:08:09
Speaker
Have as many as possible, like Brian Tracy reminds us.
00:08:12
Speaker
Number two, practice the five second rule.
00:08:14
Speaker
Like Nike says, just do it.
00:08:16
Speaker
Number three, get in a good environment and develop your intrinsic motivation.
00:08:21
Speaker
And a little bonus tip for you is just practice learning something new every day.
00:08:25
Speaker
As you go out and listen to this podcast,
00:08:27
Speaker
is you digest new sales material, read new book, should get you excited to go out and apply it.
00:08:32
Speaker
I've always had way more excitement when I'm learning something new than when I'm just going through the process, not really looking for ways to improve my craft.
00:08:39
Speaker
So always be learning.
00:08:41
Speaker
So there you have it.
00:08:43
Speaker
Send this to someone who is struggling with their motivation.
00:08:46
Speaker
Hey, and yeah, it's not going to be a magic bullet, but these things as you stack them on top of each other, they're going to help you as you're out there in your solar cells.
00:08:55
Speaker
And next episode we are going to have on a stellar guest.
00:08:58
Speaker

Speaker

00:09:03

He has started his own dealer.
00:09:04
Speaker
He's managed teams.
00:09:06
Speaker
He's going to tell you the pros and cons of all of it.
00:09:08
Speaker
