Introduction and Match Preview

Speaker
every club, every day. The Global Sports Podcast Network. Hello and welcome to the Daily Newcastle. My name is Ian Mackay. I'm the host tonight and we are hosting Gavin Repel, the Daily Fulham representative. I'm also joined by my black and white son Nicola Pringle, the one with the tingle to discuss Newcastle against Fulham on Saturday.

Fulham's Past Performance and Form

00:00:35
Speaker
Welcome to the pair of you. Are you OK? Don't know which one to speak first, do you, right now? Gavin, how are you? Yeah, I'm not too bad. Thanks for that, Ian. Yeah, I'm all right. Not too bad. Looking forward to hopefully an exciting game on the weekend. Maybe Fulham might be able to spring a surprise. A surprise to everyone apart from the diehard Newcastle fans. That's what you mean. Because we're expecting that we had it last week against Bournemouth. We are expecting that, I am.
00:01:01
Speaker
this letter Are you okay? You're, you're, you're much more up than that. You're not expecting to get turned over by full of money. No, but I said this when we played Bournemouth. So yeah. and We shall see. Yeah. Well, i my benchmark for how, uh, let's be honest, Newcastle has 10 wins out of the last 11 games and a blip.

Fulham's Inconsistency and Key Matches

00:01:25
Speaker
So some of them are calling a blip against Bournemouth. Um, I guess if we failed to beat Fulham that won't just be a blip, it'll just have to be a downturn in form, but hopefully it was a blip. Most seasons recently, we've done all right at Craving Coffee, and there have been very, very close games at the St James's Park, which has finally come out on top on as well. However, we got well into the bank, Craving Coffee, at the start of the season. I mean, completely outplayed. We lost 3-1, and I think that scores back at Newcastle. Were you at that game? Did you watch that game, Gavin?
00:02:02
Speaker
Yeah, I watched that game very closely and I think that was definitely one of Fulmer's better performances this season. And as you said, Newcastle have had a decent record in this fixture of

Newcastle's Form and Social Media Reactions

00:02:10
Speaker
late. It's almost become a sort of a cursed fixture for Fulmer, so it was nice for it to be the other way round for a change. Yeah, I thought you thoroughly deserved it that afternoon, definitely. Nicola's not old enough to remember when we always used to lose at 1-0 at Craven Cottage back in the championship day.
00:02:27
Speaker
One particular day at St. James's Park, by the way, and this is the day we were promoted verally point here so here at Sotheford's Campions. Fulham rocked up and destroyed us in exactly the same way that Gormus is last weekend. So I'm always a little bit wary of assuming that we're going to wear roll Fulham over because Fulham, I think, have had, debt they're in quite good form. At 10th in the league at the moment, Gavin, 36 points.
00:02:59
Speaker
Alongside Brighton, you've turned really into the draw, I suppose, to the Premier League, I think. and And, you know, two or three of those going the other way, you'd be right back up there. Yeah, definitely. I think it's something Marco Silva has said a lot in his interviews lately or in press conferences that they've seemed to have dropped a lot of points from winning positions or dominated games where they haven't got the points that they probably deserve.

Injury Updates for Both Teams

00:03:20
Speaker
Weaken was very disappointing because they're playing against the poor Manchester United team and it's almost becoming a bit of an embarrassment to lose to Manchester United this season as it were in recent times. So yeah, that was a bit disappointing. And as you said, there's been one or two too many draws and
00:03:36
Speaker
Yeah, but you just, you've got to get on with it now. I think realistically, the chances of European football for next season are probably over with that result on the weekend. But I think it's it's important for football now, not just up sticks and they've they still got a lot to play for, maintaining their place in the top half. And there's always a chance as well of ah breaking their record points, Tali, in the Premier League. I think they're, what is the record points, Tali? I believe it's 53 or 54 points. Win half the remaining games in the plastic.
00:04:06
Speaker
So that's very doable, very doable. How will we do, Nicola, in your view? I think we're doing great. I mean, after the Bournemouth game, the absolute meltdown that social media had of how poor we looked and how we deserved to lose, which we did deserve to lose because Bournemouth absolutely turned us over and tore us a new one a little bit. but We're having probably one of one of our better seasons, obviously, after our injury curse last season. We're on track for European... um As Ian kindly put in our WhatsApp chat this morning, he did a... What did you do? A Premier League predictor? Don't tell everybody about that. They'll think I'm on drugs. Well, you are. Did a Premier League predictor and Newcastle's right up there. So yeah, we're doing great. Can't ask for more. So yeah, all

Tactics and Key Players to Watch

00:05:00
Speaker
good. Happy.
00:05:01
Speaker
Premier League predictor. I should have a look back and see where I had to pull them. I can't get to it straight away. It's game week 30 that we, ah I think we win at Liverpool and leapfrog them into top 30. Anyway, i'm all all i mean all I'm meaning by that is that there's a lot of games between teams at the top and they can each take points up each other. And if we can have a run like we've had, where we keep winning, then why not? We're not that many points behind.
00:05:31
Speaker
Anyway, that's streamline for us. Let's get a little bit more closer to this Saturday's game. Again, call them. Have you any news in terms of who's out, Gavin? Who who were who who was that? I looked at the team last week. and I'm a big admirer of Harry Wilson, but I think he got propped, did he not?
00:05:55
Speaker
So he went off injured, I think it was about five minutes after halftime, so he got injured and was replaced by a Damatore. I think the news is it's a twisted ankle, so there's no timeline on when he's likely to but to be back, but I think he is at this moment ruled out, or at least unlikely. The other injury news are Kenny Teh, who's long-term. You won't see him again until probably April time, so that's actually something for them looking at in the transfer window, possibly exploring the market for another right back to fill in his shoes.
00:06:22
Speaker
And the other one who might be back for the weekend, it's touch and go, but Reece Nelson, who's ah who but who's on loan from Arsenal, has played a ah decent role, big impact on the Fulham team, unfortunately got injured injured in the win against Brighton, I think it was in early December. So we may we may or not may or may not see him, maybe 20 minutes, half an hour off the bench. Michael Silver isn't one to necessarily rush back players who've been out injured for a long time. In the mark for a right back, eh?
00:06:51
Speaker
You can do a lot worse than look at hearing trivia, actually. Just saying. and one disagree I I'm not sure we've got the strength, the squad depth to be able to allow someone like trivia to go, although he's been seeing a habit that he's been looking to move away since Bayern Munich were in for a good time last year. But anyway.
00:07:14
Speaker
and We're okay, though, I think, aren't we, Nicola? I don't know. We've got our long-termers. We've got... Who's out injured? Harvey Barnes. Harvey Barnes. Well, obviously, Callum Wilson. Maybe more's new there. I think that's about it, isn't it? I think he's retired, isn't it? Nick Pope. I don't know. Nick Pope was back. He was on the bench last week, so I'm guessing that... Of course he was. Stay on the bench this week.

Predictions and Game Strategy

00:07:40
Speaker
Yeah. Because I don't think Madame de Braque has done anything to warrant him being replaced. No.
00:07:46
Speaker
apart from demonstrate over the course of the last eight, nine, 10 games that he's much better with the ball at his feet and our balance going forward, so much improved compared to when Nick Pope would sit out of play on the halfway line, which is rather a problem to do. and What can we do? But every the rest of them, I think, are OK. I think we've got, obviously, long termers that have failed. I think Botman has come back and played a lot of games. And we have got a lot of games coming up as well. So I don't know if he might get another arrest. And they play Schar and Byrne at the centre-half. One of them won't play, but probably will come on as a symptom.
00:08:31
Speaker
I was talking in our pods earlier on about how we've got other players who could come on and give these guys a rest. I think Emil Krasch would come on and give somebody a rest in the back line. He could easily, easily come on. It just seems to me like Eddie's tactics are blow the team away by 60 minutes and then close to the end. And I just don't think that's sensible tactics. But if you can't blow the team away, you're running your first team into the ground.
00:09:00
Speaker
Anyway, that he's not going to do that against the team that we've lost 3-1 against earlier on in the season. No, he won't do that. I guess that, I guess that. um Right, so, pretty full French though, I would say, really. It's certainly just the normal sort of ah speaks that you've got to accommodate all of the time in a score of 25. There's always going to be two or three who are carrying something and need a rest. So I think What sort of a game are you expecting? Nicolem?
00:09:32
Speaker
um I am expecting a pretty equal game, to be honest. I've said before that I don't think Fulham are a side

Key Players and Game Dynamics

00:09:40
Speaker
that we should expect to go and win against. They are one of them sides that you kind of never know what you're going to get. And we learned the hard way at the beginning of the season when they beat us 3-1. I think we went there a little bit complacent and we got beat.
00:09:55
Speaker
So I'm expecting a very eek, to be honest. Are we doing our predictions now or are we doing them at the end? We're doing them right at the end. I was just going to finish this first part by asking Gavin whether he thinks that Newcastle are going to see the Fulham that drew to all that Liverpool or Fulham that drew, what was it, five days later. Neil Mill at home to Southampton. Which one are we going to get?
00:10:18
Speaker
Yeah well that's been the inconsistency was full and some of the games against the bottom half teams the bottom three teams they've really struggled against particularly teams were set up in that sort of low block they've struggled to break them down in a way at least from open play although I haven't said that away from home they have been a lot better they've only failed to score once away from home when that was on the opening day of the season So they have gone to Anfield and they were fully worthy of their point there. It's funny actually, whereas like everyone talks about Liverpool getting the man sent off. What they don't realise is up until that moment, 10 v 11 v 11 for them were actually the but better side than that game. and
00:10:50
Speaker
yeah you know, against some of the other adversaries up the top there, they've they've got results against Not in the Forest, against Newcastle, against Arsenal. So they do seem to raise their games for the big occasion. Yeah, they'd probably be happier to be playing away from home, to be honest, because wins at home of late have been a bit of a struggle. They haven't won at home since early December. So on the road, things have been a ah little bit better. Yeah, although you were very unlucky, weren't you, when to lose at West Ham? Because I know that's part of their the bounce. Yeah, I mean, they they gifted they gifted them three points, to be honest, you say unlucky, it was absolutely horrendous errors at the back. And the goalkeeper in defence between the decided that West Ham needed to pick me up with a new manager bounce. So that they gave them that. Here's hoping they're in the same sort of mood on Saturday. I want to pause there at the end of part one, and ask Nicola to give us our first message from Zencaster.
00:11:45

00:12:09
Speaker
um But what you just said there, by the way, Gavin, I fear that Newcastle will not set up with a low block and frustrate you. I think, as they always seem to do at certain times of the start, the crowd will roar them on and they will go for it from the start, which could easily be a little bit like just playing something into your hands. If your defence is strong, to see you've got some really, really rapid-w winged rapid ah transition players
00:12:40
Speaker
And Sandro Tenali has been able to mock a lot of what got us last year. I think if you watch that Bournemouth game back, if you get after us and they're as tired as they were on that game, then there's a lot of chances. I think it's going to be a really open game, actually. I'm expecting a bit of a, not quite a goal set, but I think there'll be lots of chances of both in. But it could be a good one.
00:13:08
Speaker
now I'm interested in asking how somebody who we were in the market for for about 18 months and then we switched to his partner and got knocked back in the summer and he went to, it was Anderson, the centre half that came out of Palace and went to Fulham. How has he performed for you? Have we missed the end? It's kind of been a season of two halves to be honest. Initially He had to wait a couple of weeks just to get into the team, because the Op was playing reasonably well, and then he did them eventually change it. Right, rightly so. I mean, you pay £30

Player Analysis and Impact

00:13:40
Speaker
million pounds for for a centre-alpha club like Fulham. He's going to start, isn't he? And then he yeah he had an injury. I'm not sure what game it was. He got injured. But since that injury, he's not really looked the same player. And we know Anderson, what he adds in terms of leadership qualities is obviously very tall. And you you see his trademark diagonal ball, which is normally pinpoint accurate in every game. And I think it was noticeable on the weekend, the game against Manchester United.
00:14:01
Speaker
instead of the lovely crossfield diagonal you saw it was just a hoof upfield and I think he gave the ball away countless times in the first 20 minutes and Calvin Bassey kind of got him off the hook at least on one occasion that match when it was a heavy back pass to Bent Leno so he just hasn't quite looked the same player since the injury But you know what a player he is at his best and Fulham saw that because he was on loan there and he was captain when they went down a few seasons back. So the fact that you had a loan player as captain tells you what they think of him and we're so eager to get him back in the summer. So there's no doubt he is a top quality player. I just don't feel like you're seeing quite the best of him right at this moment in time. Okay, what about his look at the walking red card?
00:14:46
Speaker
Yeah, he's a walking yellow card, that's for sure. I think he's probably almost certain to be the first player this season to be suspended for for two games for his tenth booking. Obviously there's talk about replacement of Joe Polina, where he's taken that quite literally because he is getting booked in every game seemingly. so But he's he's been a good performer for Fulham, but obviously discipline wise, it would be a blow to lose him for for a couple of games. Although, you know as I said, it is inevitable at this stage.
00:15:14
Speaker
What do you think Joanne? Do you think liquidity could possibly be hard enough to accelerate past our own Joe Linton and be the first player to be suspended for getting 10 yellow cards? It's got a struggle, isn't it? Did you ask me that, sorry? Yes. Sorry, I thought you were saying that. It's a Joe Linton question. Yes. Yes. Let's be honest, Joe Linton on his day also has a bit of a temper, doesn't he? So that could be interesting. He's a bit of an enjoy, and that was the point of meaning.
00:15:44
Speaker
But then that would be very interesting ah in the midfield because, to be fair, standard birds isn't a wallflower either, is he? He puts his cut in. They're quite hard in the middle of the midfield. And I know we've got Joe Linton, Tenali and Bruno there. But they might be, but I think that would be a really good battle. Who's the third, who's your third midfield player? You've got... sam Smith, Rowe, Proulx... 4-3-3, aren't they?
00:16:13
Speaker
Yeah, it'll probably be Smith Rowe unless he changes it and decides to put Andreas Pereira in. Right, yeah, Smith Rowe, that's right. um As of well, can knock we used to knock him off the ball when he played for Arsenal, so now he's at Fulham, we'll put him in. It'll be italy close though, that'll be a tight midfield battle for sure. He's a good player, you know, you shouldn't knock him. Sorry? Smith Rowe, he's a good player on his day.
00:16:39
Speaker
Yeah. I know. I know. He used to always score. He scored a few at Newcastle when he played for Arsenal. I hope so. Did you not get one when he lost 3-1 earlier in the season? He might have scored then as well.
00:16:52
Speaker
Yeah, it's dangerous, isn't it, to be, and you've got him in there as well, which we always like. He is very, very dangerous. Yeah, well, I think you like him more after that red card last season, don't you? Which, yeah, I think Fulham, Fulham came into that game, actually, funnily, they won the two previous games, 5-0, back to back, and then, yeah, it all went horribly wrong, as it so often does against Newcastle, that same genius as part. Well, we'll have to see, fingers crossed. I'll tell you one of my favourite players,
00:17:18
Speaker
and I haven't seen very much of him this year. You'll have to tell me what's going wrong or if it's just because Timonade is back from injury. I love Muniz. Last year I scored a lot of goals. I haven't seen loads of him this year.
00:17:34
Speaker
Yeah, well he's been he been restricted mainly to substitute appearances lately and he has scored the odd goal coming

Conclusion and Platform Promotion

00:17:40
Speaker
off the bench. It's a funny one with Fulham fans because if if you look at the goal, the the goal return for him is he scored eight goals, which is decent. It's not ripping up trees. It's not e-sac levels, but it's decent for a club like Fulham for him to get sort of double figures if that's the target. But Fulham fans There's been talk all season if one or two of the strikers don't have a good game about possibly wanting to sign someone in the transfer window. And I don't think one second think Marco Silva is going to look at the transfer window, bringing in a striker in the next couple of days. But, yeah, one, it's just, it feels like it's very inconsistent. Muniz, he came in the back end of last season and was a revelation because he's been at the club for a number of years now. Never set the word like he went out on loan to Middlesbrough and he wasn't getting the game there. So his form the second half of the season was a surprise to everyone because
00:18:26
Speaker
Amanda Brozier, who I think he's at Everton now, but he's not getting a kick there, he came in and it looked like he was going to be the man to lead the line. But then Moniz got a start, we scored a goal, scored in the next one, and then Amanda Brozier's almost, you know, not seen at all. So it's been a bit up and down on their day. They can be very good, but on their day, they can also be largely anonymous. Mm hmm. Mm hmm. Today is one of those anonymous days.
00:18:56
Speaker
Gavin, we're gonna will it. Alright. Is there anyone on the Newcastle team you're particularly wary of? I mean of course Alexander Esak, the form he's in, he's the form man, not just a Newcastle, you're talking in the whole of the Premier League and I've been very complimentary of Wax Lyrical about this player for for a long time now and you know I for sure for Newcastle fans don't enjoy the talk about Esak and potentially moves away and he always like talks about Arsenal, they need a striker, Esak would be perfect, well you know he he's not he's not going to cost a penny is he?
00:19:28
Speaker
but he's a he's a fantastic player and I think if you're looking at all-round strikers in the Premier League I think he's probably number one. You'd probably still have Harland ahead of him just because of the goals he's guaranteed to get but in terms of the complete package I think Alexander Eastside is in that play. Well I am going to come back and tell you if my 33-1 on Alexander Eastside when the golden boot comes in because I know what you're saying but he was quiet at the start of the season he was he broke his toe It's called one goal in the first six, seven games. He's up to speed now. He gave Harland a 10-goal start in the goal, and he's won behind now. So we have every confidence that Alex is going to us to our highest position in living memory of what I thought it would be. He's gone too. He's gone too. Nicola, tell Gavin who else you need to be looking out for in particular on our team, because we are not
00:20:27
Speaker
They're based on YouTube now about whether we're just a one-man theme. I think that's so unfair. Let Gavin know who else he's got to keep his eye open for. Yeah, I haven't seen that to be fair, but if that is going around, that is massively unfair because, let's be honest, the Newcastle side has developed massively. But the one player that I continue to talk about on our podcast episodes, and I think maybe not so much now, but on previous occasions, he was going under the radar a bit because you know he wasn't scoring or anything. but is Sandro Tonali. His game management is just top and and I think is a player that every team should probably watch out for a little bit. And um and then obviously, like you said before, Bruno is another one, Andrew Linton, because on his day, he's good on and off the ball. So yeah, there's a few. There is a few, I think, at the minute for people to be watching out for, which is nice for Newcastle, I'm just saying. You think your pullback will have
00:21:26
Speaker
limited opportunities to overlap, counter-attack. Both Mercy and Gordon have been terrific. They've been getting better and better as we continue to play. So yeah, where we we'll come at you from, and then you don't even, you're not even talking about England's number one right and left back, maybe. Lewis Hall and, live and you know, Liv Remento, who have been receiving what? Hall has been playing really, really well. Yeah.
00:21:56
Speaker
But I mean, that's why we've won 10 out of 11 because everybody's been on it. Of course there, I'm going to ask if you do the GSTN advert, if you don't mind if they will come back. We'll see who it is that, there who else it is that Gavin's worried about on our team and then we'll do some predictions. Thank you. and The Global Sports Podcast Network is changing the face of football podcasting with dedicated daily content for every Premier League team.
00:22:23
Speaker
Women's Football, a dedicated Premier League wrap-up in five different languages. This is your one-stop shop for your daily football fix. Find the GSPN wherever you find your usual podcasts. Brilliant, thank you very much. and I'm just going to give in, Gavin, all the answers as to who else is going to improve by telling, you telling him who else you ought to be worried about. So you probably won't do that. That was fair for me, something we're doing. Why don't we just wait straight into And I'm not just going to ask you to give it a score. I want to know why you're picking that score. I want that you to tell me how you think the game will unfold. I'll start with you Gavin.
00:23:04
Speaker
more foods victim and help but I'm hoping for a better performance than the weekend one against ah Manchester United when it was very lacklustre. And to be fair, aside from the goals they've gifted to West Ham, away from home they have been pretty bright. and They'll always have a go, they either go at Anfield, so they'll have a go no matter where they go and I expect them to carry a threat. Obviously the interesting bit of news will be who replaces Harry Wilson, whether it will be a damage row or whether he goes for Reece Nelson straight from the start. I think Fulham can get a result. we I think it's going to be very, very difficult of course. There's Newcastle going as favourites, but just on the evidence of what we see in the games away from home, I feel more confident, funny enough, the fact that it is away from home than it would be at home. so
00:23:47
Speaker
I'm going to be optimistic and I'm going to say it ends in a 1-1 draw. All right, good. I thought you would be boring. If I was a Fulham fan, I'd be more optimistic than that. I'd be hanging everything on how they play. Trust me, given recent results there, there's no optimism amongst Fulham fans. I see Ian's over as far as they're concerned. No, never over. No, can't possibly be. Nicola, what's your score prediction and how is the game going to unfold?
00:24:16
Speaker
So let's be honest, St. James Park for any team isn't a nice place to come to. It's quite and lively at the best of times, but as we learnt the hard way a couple of weeks ago, Bournemouth took advantage of that. So I am a bit scared to predict this. Scared to my predict it. It doesn't happen. I think there's going to be goals from both teams, so ah but I am going to go, I'm going to do a UB and I'm going to go a 3-1, but to Newcastle. Sorry. Right.
00:24:46
Speaker
I think we all. How does the game unfold? How does the game unfold? Newcastle win. My life. Yeah, that's the end. That's the end. When we, for example, when we played Leicester, I think it was Warnehill. Yeah. We would blow them away. We would blow them away. And we were three of after 50 minutes and then must have been coast through and we'd get another one. We sat together that game. I know.
00:25:16
Speaker
and I always go 3-1, Kevin. It doesn't matter who will play, whether it's home or away. And I'll tell you what, I've been right three out of the last five games as well. Nicklin knows that. So why she's picked my score, I'm not sure. Words will be had. I am going to... You can do the same. No, I can make it of my respect for Pullum. I'm not going to go 4-1. I'm going to go back. I'm going to go with it, and he Casa will win 2-1. Yeah.
00:25:47
Speaker
i am And I think that will be gold for half time. Probably EZAC. You know what, I think we might score again on the about the hour mark. Eddie will take some players off to rest them because we've got a massive Cup semi-final coming up on the following Wednesday. And I think Fulham will get one back and we will have a very nervy plus 10, which we hang on for 2-1. And but remember like but it last year,
00:26:18
Speaker
But it was 2-1 last year, wasn't it? Or was it 1-0 with a last-minute goal? 3-3 now. Yeah, I think, yeah. Yeah, him and his red card. 3-0. Oh, yeah, that was, yeah. I'll probably think another year before. Anyway, that's my prediction. It was going to be 2-1. That's one of Kev's predictions. He'll go with me on that. He'll go with you. He'll do that. And then the winner, I think the winner's going to be a 0.5.

Yep. I think we might have really got the goals wrong. It could be 5-2 or something. Because if these teams are not on it, I think the forward lines on each of them are definitely the strengths. Thank you very much indeed, Gavin, for taking part in our lovely Daily New Castle podcast, soon to be part of the Daily Fulham podcast.
