INDUSTRY TECH Roundup: Inside the WGA Strike & How it Impacts Streaming & Tech

It’s pencils down and mics out!

We’re back with a brand new season and kicking things off today discussing the historic labor rights movement happening in Hollywood.

We begin the episode (00:00) by playing catchup with some pop culture and content highlights we missed over the past few weeks, including nepo babies, MET Gala, and - we’re so sorry to do this to you - Matty Healy.

In All Hands (13:32), we provide an overview of what the WGA is and recap the last major strike in 2007/2008. We then go over the three main issues the WGA is fighting for this time around in 2023: ensuring TV staffing minimums, minimum weeks of employment, and the safety of the writer’s room (18:38), streaming residuals (24:49), and putting guardrails around AI in storytelling (29:36).

In Missed Objectives and Key Results (38:32), we go over what the AMPTP is and look at the the AMPTP’s response on the three key issues. Oh and, dear listener, if you know us… you know we absolutely sprinkle our unbridled thoughts here and there during this segment. On writers' rooms (41:31), on streaming residuals (50:07), on AI in storytelling (56:44).

In an extended “Final Thoughts and Wrapup” today (59:44), we make our predictions on the short-term and long-term effects of the strike on streaming and take a moment to tie this all together with the Silicon Valley of it all (1:09:10): what will it change about tech and how will it impact the industry to its north in the wondrous Golden State?

Get in loser,  we’re going picketing!
