Character Impressions: Elspeth and Raven
00:01:54
Speaker
Carolina, first off, how'd you like it? I really liked it.
00:01:58
Speaker
But, and, but, and, my first impression was i really miss Elspeth and Raven. I and very especially Elsbeth. I feel like for the first half of the book, you don't even really get to see her. And I was like, well, she'll come back around. But even still, you don't. She's really a side character in her own book, which, you know, Ione and Elm get to shine because of that. And do I love those characters? Of course I do.
00:02:25
Speaker
Did I miss Elsbeth? Also, yes. Yeah, it's a very so strong choice to... Yeah, bold choice. Bold choice. That's what I was looking for. it is a bold choice to make your main character powerless in the second book.
Narrative Choices: Sideling a Main Character
00:02:42
Speaker
Powerless, quiet, and sidelined. But I did like the, what came out of that with the interchange between the nightmare and Raven of of the nightmare coming up, you know, with saying what she said and and making it terrible. And Raven's just like, at first he's like, shit she didn't say that?
00:03:03
Speaker
Like all upset. And then by the end he's like, she didn't say that. Yeah. Yes. Which brings us to my personal biggest plot twist of the book did not see coming.
Plot Twist: Raven's Lineage
00:03:16
Speaker
ah Raven is not just his son-in-law, soon to be, and also his great, great, great, great great grandson.
00:03:27
Speaker
Did you see that coming? I mean, looking back, I should have. That's how They talk about the hooked nose and the gray eyes. Yeah. Yeah. I didn't but I did think there was some kind of connection between the you family and his since they lived on the those grounds right but I assumed all the children had been killed so I didn't think it was a direct ancestor situation yeah she had me fooled a when she said what is your real name I was like
00:04:03
Speaker
Okay, now I have a question with that. Why was that enough of a cost? I mean, for me, that just tied into old fairy tales of you give your name. um Now in old fairy tales, there's that some...
00:04:19
Speaker
power that she would hold over him forevermore by giving his name that doesn't seem to be the case here but for me that was just like old fairy tale rules hear I almost feel i wonder if it was a test of him because she also offered him the crown and he didn't want it and then but then would he still not want it if he knew he was directly descended from the shepherd king Hmm.
00:04:47
Speaker
You know, with, would this knowledge change how he behaved? This is also how I knew I was weak because when she offered to save everyone and make him king, I was like, obviously do that. We'll figure out this twin alders situation later. But like, and he's like, what would Elm need saving from? Meanwhile, els Elm's being actively murdered. And I was like, do do that one. Do that one. I guess because i um I was looking in her words for, you know, when you're making deals with magical beings, you always are.
Magical Deals and Consequences
00:05:22
Speaker
looking for the the catch and uh yeah the fact that it's everyone you love it's not everyone and what does that do you know like okay so all the other innocent people are still going to be killed or are people going to be killed more because I make this choice what is the cost of saving the people I love Well, the mist would still persist. There would still be infection.
00:05:48
Speaker
So what? But would it become worse for them? Probably. Probably. We don't want that. So? But I loved his answer. I will just have to save them myself when I have the Alder card.
00:06:01
Speaker
Oh, you would. I did. And speaking of, I loved the mirroring of Raven and his sister with the nightmare and his sister and how they both decide with Elspeth that this time is not going to be the same and that they will not sacrifice another sister to this whole thing.
00:06:24
Speaker
play. Yeah, I was going to touch base with you on predictions we were wrong about. um one that i hadn't set One that I hadn't said to you, but one that I had thought in my head was I was hoping that when the mist called them, it was taking them somewhere nice.
00:06:39
Speaker
did not Did not have trees eating them and a valley full of corpses in my head. that was did not see that one coming at all.
00:06:50
Speaker
because i was like it just seemed so wasteful which i don't think of spirits as wasteful e hear i guess it's old-timey sacrifice but i don't know it seemed off balance like if the whole thing is balanced and yes the rowans had done terrible things and yes that like feeds into the natural world and and you know people were using the cards instead of going to the spirit it felt a little like throughout this book that was one thing that i had a little bit of a trouble with throughout the book throughout both books
00:07:32
Speaker
the spirit is said to be ancient magic and balance and neutral, neither good nor bad. And yet all of the things like, like that, that every single person who gets called into the wood dies and rots over the, under the trees, which then nourishes the trees.
00:07:51
Speaker
It's like, I get the, if, if, That's not natural because it's like people are being forced into the mist. It's not like they're going out of their own folly and then that folly is is part of this natural cycle. Which brings me to a question.
00:08:09
Speaker
Why is the spirit of the wood
Symbolism of the Spirit of the Wood
00:08:12
Speaker
a creature in an ocean? I hadn't even thought of that. I get the idea that the The beach and the water signifies like consciousness because that's what she sees when she's inside the nightmare's mind, like going to the place where he holds all of his memories.
00:08:29
Speaker
And there's the sea of his consciousness. so So I kind of get that like the ocean and the beach itself is part of the spirit. You're kind of like inside her consciousness. But then she comes out of the ocean looking very yeah like she's got a tail.
00:08:45
Speaker
And this might be because i was finishing the book late at night, but I could not quite visualize what she looked like. Okay, she's got claws like the nightmare. But then when she put pierces her chest, she's got fur. And so and I'm like rewriting how she looks like, okay, there's fur.
00:09:03
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. Well, I thought she just looked like the nightmare with the tail. And then also when she pierces her stomach to get the card, i just couldn't help but think over and over when, you know, the nightmare says, "'Twas I who put it there." thought, you put it in her stomach?
00:09:17
Speaker
I hadn't thought about that. So when? and well Maybe we're not supposed to take it literally. He was there. big and then okay Okay, this ties into predictions that didn't come true and things we weren't supposed to be taking literally. He says several times in the first book, yellow girl will never be queen. I thought that too.
00:09:41
Speaker
his first rhyme about her. And then she does become queen. Yeah. Yeah.
00:09:47
Speaker
Now it could mean you'll never be Hoth's queen, but doesn't say that. Yeah. this womb Yeah. this Yellow girl, something unseen. Yellow girl, never become, yeah, never be queen.
00:09:58
Speaker
Yeah. i wondered about that too. If you have an answer, let us know in the comments because that was, that one perplexed me. While we're talking about I own the, the moment that I just loved and just felt so
00:10:12
Speaker
It's like it heals a little part of you the moment when she ah undoes her maiden card.
00:10:21
Speaker
A, i didn't think she was going to do it in front of him. So I was like, oh, that's going be a lot. She's probably going to be alone for that, you know. And then she does. And that level of trust between the two of them was beautiful.
00:10:37
Speaker
And then being in his head, rejoicing, overseeing these little imperfections that make her human. And in the way the text is, you can just feel the love and the like each piece of her is an endearment.
00:10:54
Speaker
And in of seeing, you know, like the the smile lines, because this I own smiles. And it made me think about the beauty industry and how kind of the whole.
00:11:07
Speaker
you know, filters and and Hollywood and everything is made like you have to present yourself as this flawless being. And, but the people who really love you ah see those unique quote unquote flaws. And that is part of just who you are. And thus they are beloved.
00:11:30
Speaker
Yeah, I really loved that part too. And how she kicks him out and then pulls him back in when she's ready and they just sleep cuddled up through the night. I really loved that part. And he just waits outside the door. Yeah.
00:11:44
Speaker
And then there was a little bit of a the going back and forth feeling like la la la la. And then you go to Raven and it's like la la la la.
00:11:55
Speaker
And then it goes back to Elm and Ion falling love and they're like la la la. And then until, of course, it goes but for them as well. I felt like the more it got la la la, I could feel the undercurrent of peril coming closer and closer. Like the moment when they're the most happy, I'm like, oh, no. Oh, no.
00:12:17
Speaker
Oh, no. What's going to happen? I'm more on edge. And this says a lot about life, too. I'm more on edge when things are going well in a book than when they're going poorly. Because when they're going poorly, I'm like, I know where I'm at.
00:12:29
Speaker
When they're going well, I'm like, this is not. Well, especially that one chapter, because you're like, there's 100 pages before the end. There's no way this goes well. You're too happy too soon. Too happy too soon. I'm too happy too soon.
00:12:41
Speaker
Classic. I was so on edge that genuinely,
00:12:48
Speaker
if I can find it, I will read it. It's a very schmectual scene between them. And I thought something was going wrong because I was so ready for things to go wrong that I was like, no, she's dying.
00:13:02
Speaker
But she wasn't. Totally that. Actually, I did the same thing. I had to reread. I was like that sentence. I had to reread because I'm like, wait, because did that? just Oh, no. We're OK. No, that we're just you're just talking about the.
00:13:15
Speaker
That very one? That same one? Yeah. Yeah, because I was like, what just happened? Something terrible happened. Oh, we're still in spicy land. Okay. Here it is. Can I read it to you? Yeah.
00:13:27
Speaker
Actually? ah Sure. yeah
00:13:33
Speaker
Okay, it's not bad. you want to. Ion's brow furrowed, her eyes still on him. She opened her mouth and let out a sharp cry. and I was like, she's dead. She just got stabbed. Like something bad just happened. And I had to reread it to be like, oh, it's okay. It's okay. The exact thing happened to me.
00:13:55
Speaker
Yep. That's how on edge that part made me. And not the on edge I was looking for. who No. And we were right. Something terrible did happen.
00:14:09
Speaker
Just not right then. Yeah, just a little bit later. Moments later. think
Character Motivations and Noble Actions
00:14:14
Speaker
it's unfair that Hoth, the cost of the maiden card for him isn't a cost at all because he's already heartless. So he becomes invincible.
00:14:26
Speaker
and And it doesn't cost him a thing. And just all the noble actions, like her entering the room to be with Elm as he faces down Hoth is why he figures it out. And I'm just like, would you people stop being so noble? yeah Kill him in his sleep. Don't go in the room and let him know you're still alive. Because Elm doesn't know that he tried to kill her. So Elm would obviously be like, hey, don't come in.
00:14:50
Speaker
But she a keeps that little bit to herself, comes in the room to be self-sacrificing, and ruins everything. i know. I was very frustrated.
00:15:02
Speaker
Yeah, yeah, me too. When we find out that he did um murder her, I, it made so much sense because it was like, you already knew how horrible he was.
00:15:15
Speaker
And the fact that he hadn't done anything to her yet was a little surprising. And then the way she is found and she doesn't know what's happened. Like what? You felt like there's something missing here.
00:15:29
Speaker
And then when you find out what it was, it's, Yeah. He's terrible. He's terrible. Can I say something really terrible? Mm hmm. I think the most horrible thing is when they're talking about like what he made her do under the scythe. you're like worried that he's forced himself on her.
00:15:46
Speaker
this This is a terrible thing. I was like more, i I was more relieved that he had murdered her than forced himself off. Is that horrible? But it seemed better somehow. What's wrong with me? No. More than we can probably get into in this podcast.
00:16:02
Speaker
Yeah, it's weird because one's clearly final unless you have the maiden card. And yet the other one seems more of a violation. It's like pushing out a window is like at least clean. Yeah.
00:16:14
Speaker
You know. But still that one's yeah worse because you don't make it out of it. You can't heal from being dead unless you're right yeah you're in a fantasy novel.
00:16:27
Speaker
So in real life, I don't feel that way. I have at least two things from this podcast to talk to my therapist about. Oh, good. Good. Good. Good. I'm glad we could like air this out you know in front of an audience. Me too. um Speaking of predictions, I was wrong about the nightmare.
00:16:49
Speaker
Not the love interest, but... The father we all would love to have. I highlighted um a couple of quotes with him and Elspeth in this one because, yes, we don't get to see her very much, but there are some real beautiful
Dark Humor with Nightmare
00:17:06
Speaker
moments. holy these these are I highlighted these because they made me laugh out loud.
00:17:10
Speaker
Okay, so this is at the end when they're in the woods and the trees are fighting the Destriers. and a And Ion keeps speaking to the nightmare.
00:17:22
Speaker
And he says, You know, yellow girl, I've always liked you best. But if you do not be quiet and let me listen, I'm going to tell the trees to press their branches over your mouth. Ion balked and I swatted at darkness. Would it kill you to be civil?
00:17:37
Speaker
I'm already dead. But yes, decidedly. He opened eyes a sliver. He opened his eyes a sliver. Peaked at Ion. Elspeth is lecturing me. hesitant at first, then blossing blossoming, a smile spread over my cousin's mouth. She could not see it, but I answered her with my own. Oh, give her a hug.
00:17:58
Speaker
Don't be grotesque.
00:18:02
Speaker
I just love him. He's so acerbic. He yeah doesn't get sentimental about any of it. and then And then when Elm and Ione are kissing in front of everybody, Elspeth and the Nightmare are looking at them like, is happening? And this one this one I really laughed at. The Nightmare and I stared.
00:18:23
Speaker
We seem to have missed something rather important, I said. Small mercies. yes
00:18:33
Speaker
um while we're doing quotes should we do our disc world delight
00:18:39
Speaker
where are we at with guesses well i'll tell you on youtube we have a guess of going postal i think that's an excellent guess tis not what it is and tiktok we've got Um, guess, it guess, guess, guess. Come on, Jimmy. Okay.
00:19:06
Speaker
Uh, oh man, you guys are good. Uh, you guys have stumped me this time. That's what I get for saying the last one was too easy though. Oh, you're still amazing. You're still an amazing guesser, Tilly Mint. Um, Reaper Man and Reaper Man.
00:19:22
Speaker
Dude, these guys are amazing. These people. You people, you know your stuff. It was, in fact,
00:19:32
Speaker
de theta Reaper man
00:19:37
Speaker
Are you ready with this week's Discworld Delight? I am. I almost showed you the book. When they were several miles outside of the village, she said, I thought you told me plants were different in foreign parts.
00:19:52
Speaker
So they are. These trees look just the same. Granny regarded them disdainfully. Nothing like is good, she said. In fact, she was already feeling slightly panicky.
00:20:05
Speaker
Who is Granny talking to?
00:20:10
Speaker
I think the final, the things the things we've neglected to talk about mostly are is Elm, since this is basically his book. But I need to say one more issue I have with people doing things that annoy me. And I have to agree with the nightmare. Please do not leave me with these idiots. when Raven goes to face Hoth with, and he knows Hoth has the maiden card. He knows he can't die.
00:20:36
Speaker
and he just, and he's like, no, he don't need help. I'm like, what, what, what do you mean? Yes, exactly. In fact, to the point where when he gets, spoilers, when he gets stabbed, I'm like, okay, this has to be part of the plan. Like he wouldn't be that stupid.
00:20:54
Speaker
Like maybe they planned this out and then because they knew if he thinks Raven's dead, he'd go take himself to the, and no, no. Yeah, it was not part of the plan. I'm like, you why didn't you just have the trees move him?
00:21:09
Speaker
This mano a mano, which is the same thing, which is interesting because Elm, I was frustrated with him too when he's like, no, no, I'll go back. And i'm like, I wrote this down. Why does Elm go back when he knows he'll just be a bargaining chip against Raven?
00:21:24
Speaker
And he will be powerless.
Poor Decisions and Consequences
00:21:28
Speaker
Unfortunately, he at least realized he was being an idiot. I mean, too late, but at least he didn't try to like defend it. He was just like, wow, I was, whew, the scythe did a number on me. I wasn't thinking this was a bad choice.
00:21:44
Speaker
And I, you know, why would I think that I'd have this this moment of confrontation with him? Why did I think he would allow such a thing when he never has my entire life? Yeah. So then Raven makes the same mistake.
00:21:59
Speaker
Idiots. They're all idiots. But lovable idiots. They're our idiots. love them all. Yeah. So Elm, we haven't really talked about his character arc, his growth. And, you know, obviously i already said I miss Raven and Elspeth.
00:22:14
Speaker
That's been said. Do I love Elm? of course I do. i Like you said, very healing to read. I wish he didn't call himself rotten so much.
00:22:27
Speaker
I always think literally like, oh, come on. You're not rotten. you You're just traumatized. Yeah. ah Yeah. When he's talking about my rotten insides, I'm like, oh, and Clean him up.
00:22:42
Speaker
Yeah. the The fact that he does get that final confrontation because the nightmare leaves him to it because he is going to be king. And this brings up who's the rightful king who or who's the true king, even though Raven is the descendant and could be considered the true king by bloodlines.
00:23:05
Speaker
The Nightmare talks about, you know, we are we are Blender's reckoning, not their ruler or not its ruler or king or something. Yeah.
00:23:16
Speaker
And I really liked that because he goes on to say all the things about Elm that makes him the perfect king. That he could, he had this power all his life and yet he didn't use it to cause pain even though so much pain was caused to him by the same power that he held.
00:23:34
Speaker
And he didn't become it. You break the cycle or the cycle breaks you. That's what I heard that somewhere. Which Hoth says to the nightmare, he explains away the evilness that they'd done because that's what it takes to rule Lunder.
00:23:53
Speaker
No. No, I think not. Yeah. So on that note, were you satisfied by the ending? it was. Yeah.
Book's Conclusion and Character Growth
00:24:04
Speaker
And one of the things that I really was satisfied by is that Raven, it's Raven who gives the Nightmare and Elspeth time to say goodbye. And he offers it. It's not asked of him.
00:24:15
Speaker
He comes up with it and says it. um I ah think that meant a lot for his character and the understanding that they gained through this book.
00:24:26
Speaker
Because the nightmare, to be clear, just recently, knowingly had him sacrifice his sister. Like, you and I forgive the nightmare lot because he makes us laugh. That's just the way it is when people make me laugh. They can literally get away with murder. Hey, by the way, on the last podcast, did you bleep out when I said murder? Or is that something the program does? I did it because I just wanted to make sure. It was a good call. good call. Thank I mean, because like, know you're joking.
00:24:55
Speaker
I know. No, you did the right thing. You did the right thing. Yeah. And I didn't want to take out the joke because it was too funny. But I was like, in a new Like I said, maybe humor doesn't get you away with everything. But where was I? Right. he He did hide vital information.
00:25:13
Speaker
People got hurt because of that. He did have his own agenda the whole time. He didn't care who died be like because he was there to bring balance. And that's it. He didn't care. He learned. He grew. he's He'll do better next time. the end, he did care.
00:25:26
Speaker
He's the best. he did and he does save the sister and it's fine I think it's also easier to forgive people in books because we get to see inside their head so we get to see so much more of them than just the action right so it's just it is nice that Raven does come to this loving I'm gonna call it loving understanding with him because you know he did have every reason to hate him and I love how Elspeth I did this a lot reading this, like, like, I'm like, is that what she's doing when it says her chocolate clicks? But I'm like, probably not. It's probably more like, like in the back, you know, when you try to do what the book tells you and I'm like,
00:26:10
Speaker
um but I love that he's still with her in these little ways. Like there's still a monster inside of her. Which is, can be said too, for, you know, people in our own lives who have, you know, truly,
00:26:24
Speaker
ah meant something to us you know they might be gone but the echo is still there they're never truly gone because they've changed us and uh I felt like it was just an extra treat that the author blessed us with having Raven use the mirror card to see Texas with his children she didn't have to do that that was just that was just a sweet little treat for us yeah did you have like an overarching takeaway from this book I feel like to me the theme is sacrifice and how we how we transcend pain, what we do with it.
00:26:59
Speaker
you know the like We were talking about the sisters in the forest and how we were so frustrated with them because they took injustice and and then kind of became injustice, having the blood sport. And in continuing on that, like you said, you know, continuing on the cycle and what does it take to break that cycle? What does it take to not sacrifice the sister, even though that looks like that's how and what should happen?
00:27:28
Speaker
you know what And then he the nightmare says something about he's had so long to plan out his revenge, but there's something to, poet like the justice of poetry versus violence and having Elm be the one to stand up to the last row and instead of him. And those conscious decisions, I guess, to overcome vengeance and overcome pain and and sacrifice something different.
Themes of Identity and Transcendence
00:28:00
Speaker
How about you? Yeah, I think i think my takeaway is ah just, I feel like our takeaways are two sides of the same coin. My takeaway was just focused a little more on identity and how each of these characters were given sort of these unwinnable scenarios where they could have just played the part that was given to them.
00:28:21
Speaker
Or if you'll forgive my pun, the cards that were given to them. um And they choose something else. You know, Elm could have perpetuated the cycle of pain on somebody else very easily. He could have become a a cruel king. He could have killed his brother, but he continually chooses to transcend the pain and to not carry it on, not to continue that cycle. um You know, Elspeth.
00:28:47
Speaker
or I guess Raven is who I was going to do next, you know, becoming the King's Guard, he could have felt like, well, I'm lucky to have my life. I need to do exactly what he tells me. And even still begins this rebellion. Elm begins this rebellion. Elspeth with her own little rebellion in her heart of keeping this a secret and staying strong. Ione staying kind and empathetic in a world that is so cold and cruel. Each of these characters...
00:29:14
Speaker
um And their journey of heroism and choice in their own identities. But I feel like that's, I'm almost just mirroring back exactly what you said in just a different way. No, I really like what you said. I think that's really true.
00:29:27
Speaker
Identity, sacrifice, and blood. I realized at the end that I had not been imagining the mist as all-encompassing as it was. Like when it when it left and they could see and they're talking about the colors and how bright everything was and the saturation of the colors. yeah and i And I had been imagining, because i would see it as like,
00:29:49
Speaker
how it is in real life where, you know, here in the valley you get mist along the river, but there's not mist in other areas. So, because they're always talking about going into the mist. so I'm assuming that when they're right at the castle, there was an out of i of the mist. Yeah. But it's like it might have just been thinner there, but you still couldn't see the sky. Like it was all misty above you. Sun or sky. Yeah. Yeah. Same. I i was like, oh, this is a different atmosphere than I've been imagining the whole time.
