Speaker: My mission is to empower you to lead from a place of holistic wellbeing. It's time to say, peace out to the fatigue, fog, and frustration of living in a place that lacks abundant wellbeing.

Speaker: Join me as we embark on a comprehensive exploration of spiritual, physical, mental, emotional, social, and economic well-being, all within the comforting embrace of one podcast.

Speaker: Hey, good people. Welcome back to the Aligned Living Podcast. Dr. Autumn here. I'm really excited for today's episode, but I'm pretty sure i say that every time. But I have a personal story for you on where the inspiration came behind this episode because, you know, as a coach, um a lot of my content and inspiration ideas come just from interacting in spaces that I'm working in or coaching people on. But sometimes my inspiration comes from personal experiences because we are multifaceted humans, right? We have more to us than just our work life. And so what that means is sometimes I'll experience something personally and the blessing and curse of having the expertise that I do, you know, looking at our lives, um,

Speaker: through the lenses of wholeness and holistic health and understanding that we are integrated beings. So when I look at things, I'm like, OK, there is a spiritual, physical, mental, emotional component to this. And then you start trying to figure it out. Like, why is this this way? So one thing i was experiencing, I'm going kind of bring this full circle as I dive, writing this super, super relevant topic. But um I've always valued being a person of my word, right? Like we all have different strengths and weaknesses and none of us are perfect, but I am a highly reliable person who values following through. So sometimes when we have a strength, we just kind of assume that, you know, this could come easy to other people. But what I found is following through is actually um more of a rare case. Yeah. then I realized the more interactions I have with people, I'm like, man, like, I think people really, truly in their hearts want to be a person of their word. And so if people are not following through, then what is going on? You know, spiritually, biology, biologically, that's what I start thinking, you know, because, you know, sometimes I, you know, just to be vulnerable with you all, it would stress me out a little bit, you know, I wondering, like, if someone said something, like, why wouldn't they do it, you know, and um So with that being said, um i'm going to take you through a journey today. um And if you find yourselves or people around you, you know, if this is something that just feels super relevant to you, like just following thing and following through on the things that you want to do, being a person of your word. I am going to help you get there. I'm really excited about the content for today.

Speaker: um But you know what is fun about this episode is I am a huge basketball fan. I've grown up you know my entire life playing basketball. and ah you know And just my process of trying to figure things out that I experience in life You know, when I was evaluating this particular topic of following through, I remember um thinking to myself, man, I understand it now.

Speaker: And um I started thinking about somebody that you all probably know, many of you at least. You might not know him by name, but if you spend much time on social media at all, there's a pretty good chance you've seen him. And his name's Chris Matthews. Also known by millions of people as lethal shooter. Okay. He's an incredible basketball shooter and shooting coach, right? Played division one basketball. um Actually, I believe in DMV native where I live, the DC metro area, um but played professionally overseas. So I don think a lot of people don't realize that. Eventually became the shooting coach working on some with some of the best basketball players you know in the world.

Speaker: um Some people don't even know about his resume. They just ah you know know him as a social media sensation who can make these fascinating trick trickck shots. And as is known for that statement, I understand it now. And while it's wildly entertaining, it's actually wonderful.

Speaker: wildly deep. It's a super significant life lesson because that is what Align Living is all about. I help you understand what's going on, but then you have to adjust your shot, right? You have to pivot so that you have alignment in your life and um to make the choices that you want to make so that you could do the thing you want to do. And let me tell you, there is no, well, maybe there's some more beautiful sounds, but the sound of a basketball swooshing through a net is a beautiful sound. And my job today is, you know, the sensation

Speaker: of being known as a person of your word, of feeling like follow through does not have to be a struggle. That is like the beauty of the sound of a basketball swishing through a net. So I wanna help you say, I understand it now, and then be able to apply that to your life.

Speaker: And so I have a whole new appreciation for Lethal Shooter because my understanding is that that statement for him is not just about basketball. It is much deeper than that. It's not just taking a shot missing learning from why the why the miss, adjusting, and then making the shot, right? It is much deeper than that. It's saying like in life, when we miss or take a loss or fail, how do we pivot? How do we adjust? How do we learn from? Don't just keep doing the same thing over and over. How do we learn from and adjust and pivot so that we can then be successful, okay? So I have a whole new appreciation

Speaker: for um what he does because I think there is deeper deeper meaning behind it. So anyways, me today, I'm going to take off my doctor hat, put on my coach hat, and I'm going help you become a person of your word.

Speaker: Or maybe i'm going to help you manage the stress that comes from being around people who are not following through and how you can have compassion towards that and maybe support them in building a foundation that will help you follow through because those choices that you make are connected to us emotionally, physically, spiritually, mentally. And so so if you have the best intentions in the world because your heart is in a good spot, but there's things physically or mentally going on, it is going to be more of a struggle. Now, this is not a justification.

Speaker: You know, we can't just make excuses for things. But once you understand it, now you are responsible for stewarding things that you can now do to move in the direction that you want to go. So that being said, we all have the shot we're trying to make, whatever it might be, multiple things in the course of a single day.

Speaker: Think about the person you want to become. OK, so maybe you've said going to make it super practical for you here. I'm going to exercise consistently. You look at somebody like, man, I want to be fit and I want to be toned. I want to be healthy. I want to be able to, you know, um, run around my grandkids. ah When I'm older, I want to be able to, um, you know, just enjoy hobbies that require physical activity. Okay. I'm going to exercise consistently. And then you don't, I'm going to stop spending so much money

Speaker: But the struggle is real. You find yourself not making the changes you want to make. How about somebody who says, I'm going to get serious about my relationship with God. But where have you paused to create the margin to do so, right? I'm going call that person.

Speaker: And then a week, two weeks, three weeks go by. I'm going to finish that project. A year later, the project sits unfinished. I'm going to stop staying up until midnight scrolling. I know that I have sleep issues. i know that I need better rest. It'll help me feel healthier. Yet at the same time, I know screen time prefer bed is not good for me. Yet I still scroll. Like what is so powerful about that? Right?

Speaker: Again, I'm going to help you become a person of your word. and I'm going help you follow through on what you say. How about this one? I hear it all the time. I'm going to eat differently this year. My nutrition is going to change. I know eating healthy is super important.

Speaker: So I'm going to eat differently. And then Do you make a plan to support that decision, right? I'm going to be more present with my kids. Or maybe it's um not something you promised yourself, but something you told somebody else about.

Speaker: I'll call you tomorrow. I'll get to that. I'll be there. I'll take care of it. I got you. And then you don't. You don't actually show up. You don't actually do the thing. You're not actually there for somebody. Now, mind you, everything I do with Align Living is covered with grace Because we were created by a God who is merciful and gracious. So how dare I approach anything from a place other than grace? The thing is, is I care deeply for my fellow humans. So when I say this, and it might be a little bit harsher today, it's because I know that's what you want for yourself. You want to follow through and be a person of your word, but why don't you? And that's what I'm getting at, okay?

Speaker: All the grace in the world extended to all my listeners, all of you. But again, how often have you told somebody you're going to do something and then you didn't? So here's what fascinates me.

Speaker: If I asked most people, do you want to be a person of your word? Almost everybody would say yes. Being someone whose word means something sounds great. It sounds honorable. It's attractive. Frankly, it sounds sexy, right?

Speaker: It's wildly attractive. When I tell you I'm going to do something, you can count on me. Who doesn't want to be that person? And yet, a lot of us aren't consistently living that way. So what is happening? And this is where I'm going to help you understand it now.

Speaker: So we have this narrative in our culture that there are disciplined people and undisciplined people. Some people just have it. They're motivated. They're organized. They're consistent. It just comes easy to them. And then there's everybody else.

Speaker: Okay. I don't buy that. As a matter of fact, it's not that I don't buy it. I know that's not true. This is not a personality trait as much as it's a skill to be developed. There are certain individual differences in temperament and executive function and self-control. Absolutely. But follow through isn't simply a personality trait.

Speaker: Follow through is supported or undermined by the way your life is structured. Now, mind you, if you've noticed through some of these episodes, they've been building on each other, right? So, you know, I had, um, the biology of becoming and looking how spiritual formations interconnected with everything else. You got to start there. And then recently I did the episode on how, um,

Speaker: We don't rise to our intentions. We fall to our systems, right? So when I talk about how is your life structured, if you haven't listened that episode, listen to that episode. I can't remember which number it was. But basically, the idea there is that intentions give us direction. Sure. But if we don't put the sit systems in place, we're going to fail because the systems give us the capacity to do what we said we're going to do. OK, see how things are building on each other and they're connected. OK, so this is where Align Living becomes incredibly practical.

Speaker: Because if your spiritual life, your physical body, your mind, your emotions, your relationships, your finances are chronically out of alignment, you're just asking yourself to consistently make aligned choices without having built a life that supports those choices. You feel me? That's really powerful. Now, that's difficult to do. Again, i'm going to say it. If your spiritual, physical, mental, emotional, social, economic parts of your life are chronically out of alignment.

Speaker: then wanting to be a person of your word is going to stay a want because you're asking yourself to consistently make aligned choices while your life's fragmented. It's out of a line. You haven't built a life that supports those choices. Okay. You don't just need more discipline. You need a better foundation.

Speaker: So here we go. help you understand it even more. want swish shots in your life. Okay, not misses. Why don't we follow through? The biological layer of this. Let's start with your body and your brain.

Speaker: Follow through requires executive functioning. That is the prefrontal cortex of your brain. And mind you, going back to some previous content, input comes through the emotional limbic center of our brain first and how healthily we process that and how we you know, engage our inner calm and allow our prefrontal cortex to um execute wisdom and discernment and decisions. Like that's what i'm talking about. The executive functioning. We have to be mentally and emotionally healthy enough to function from that place of our brain.

Speaker: You have to remember what you intended to do, right? That's executive functioning. You have to prioritize it. This is huge. What are the priorities in your life? As a matter of fact, I should do an episode on this as well. But recently in my Instagram story, I posted a video about this exact thing. We go around saying we don't have enough time for something, but actually the truth is,

Speaker: We have time for what we prioritize. So I challenged everyone with the statement, instead of saying, I don't have time for this, say, I'm just choosing in the season not to prioritize this thing. And if you choose to prioritize it, you'll make time for it. You see, you have to initiate the behavior. You have to resist competing behaviors. competing impulses.

Speaker: You have to stay focused long enough to finish. See, resisting a competing impulses, that's emotional maturity. And just like people want to be a person of their word, they want to be emotionally mature. But if you cannot resist competing impulses that are keeping you from doing the thing you want to do, you can't call yourself an emotionally mature person. Now, mind you, I am not trying to offend everybody. I am saying this with the deepest love.

Speaker: Because I want to watch people elevate in their lives, right? you And having to stay focused long enough to finish, that is coming from a place of mental maturity and mental health.

Speaker: Right. OK, so now imagine trying to do all of that while you're chronically exhausted, stressed, overload, loaded and distracted. OK, your biology matters. This is why physical well-being isn't separate from productivity or character.

Speaker: It's not. Sleep matters. Movement matters. Nutrition matters. Stress regulation matters. Rest matters. Your body is the physical infrastructure through which you live out your intentions.

Speaker: Sometimes the problem isn't I need to try harder. That's what we often think. And then we fail and then we feel bad and then we're still tired. Sometimes it's I have built a life in which my brain and body are constantly trying to operate depleted.

Speaker: That is powerful. I have built a life in which my brain and body are constantly trying to operate depleted. This is what's so hopeful is when it feels impossible, you just start sleeping better, take baby steps and exercising 15 minutes a day.

Speaker: you know, try to eat some whole foods meals, stop going out to eat as much, you know, when it comes to stress, take some time to journal, take some time to be in positive community, take some time to pray, take some time to breathe deeply. You're going to start regulating your stress. All of these things that you start to do, you're going to build a foundation. You're not going to be operated from a depleted state. Your brain and body are going to be in a better place to follow through. Next thing you know, you will more likely be that person of your word that you want to be. All right. That is the um biological, the physical layer. Let's talk about the mental layer here.

Speaker: We all know thoughts are powerful. There's something psychologists have studied extensively, and that's the gap between intention and behavior. And again, I've talked about this. I'm passionate about it. Let's touch on it briefly again. We think wanting something badly enough should make us do it.

Speaker: But here's the thing. It doesn't. It doesn't. I want to exercise. Great. But when and where and for how long and what happens when you're tired and what's the backup plan? What happens when Wednesday gets busy? Like we frequently make commitments without building mechanisms for fulfilling them. That's not a goal. That's a wish. There's a huge difference between I'm going start exercising versus Monday, Wednesday, Friday, immediately after I drop the kids off, I'm walking for 30 minutes.

Speaker: One is an intention and the other begins to create a system. All right, it's in your calendar. You have your shoes ready. It's a plan. Now, I'm not going to go into that more deeply, although I could, but you're starting to understand it now. The emotional layer.

Speaker: This one is huge because we like to do what we feel like. Oh, I just don't feel like doing that. But nobody got anywhere where they truly want to be by doing that.

Speaker: Sometimes you're not avoiding the task, you're avoiding the emotion attached to the task. Why haven't you opened the email? Maybe you're anxious about what's in it. Why haven't you looked at your bank account? Maybe you don't want to feel the discomfort. Why haven't you started the project?

Speaker: Maybe starting means risking failure. Why haven't you had the conversation? Because you don't want conflict. Why haven't you gone back to the gym? Because you're embarrassed that you stopped going. Okay, so you tell yourself, I'll do it tomorrow. Oh my gosh, those words sound so innocent and they are so counterproductive. We're giving us this excuse to put it off and the justification that we'll probably get to it tomorrow when we know that we won't.

Speaker: Immediately you feel this little relief. You know, and that's really important to identify because now your brain's learned something. Avoiding this makes me feel better right now. And suddenly what looks like a discipline problem may actually be an emotional regulation problem.

Speaker: And no grown person wants to say they have an emotional regulation problem. So let me help you. Let me help you. So here's a question I want you to start asking. What feeling am I trying not to feel?

Speaker: You know what I'm saying? Okay. Now the relational layer. And again, I can help you with every single one of these spaces. This is why I created the Aligned Living Community. I have courses, content, practical steps, challenges, coaching, so that you have the accountability and the support and the structure and the ideas and everything you need each day to move in the direction of where you want to be, okay?

Speaker: Because it's a lot easier to start eating healthy if you have a very simple plan. Okay, do this this week. You see what I'm saying? So that is why I created the line living community. I made it incredibly affordable.

Speaker: So reach out to me if you want more information. But again, this podcast episode, try not to make it too long. So I'm just touching on these things, but we can go deeper and I want to help you. The relational layer. Some people fail to follow through because they just say yes too easily. And ironically, this often happens to really caring people. Like someone asked, can you do this?

Speaker: And you know you don't have the capacity, but saying no feels uncomfortable and you don't want to disappoint them. So you say absolutely. And what did you just do? You avoided five seconds of discomfort today and created disappointment for somebody next week. People pleasing often borrows relational peace from the future.

Speaker: If you want your word to mean something, you have to be comfortable saying, no, I don't have the capacity. Let me check before I commit. Let me take a moment before I answer.

Speaker: Or just, I'd love to really, but I can't. Let me know next time. Trustworthy no is better than an unreliable yes. Now the spiritual layer, you know, and I could talk more about the relational layer. It's not just that. People leave in one tiny area. when you start talking about being a person of your word, like there's other things that matter too, like surrounding yourself with people who want to help you grow.

Speaker: You know, maybe you have an accountability group together. Hey, we are going to do a 30-day reset. I talk about this in my program too, you know, where we're focusing on stress management, eating better, sleep, and exercise, right? Let's start there.

Speaker: the spiritual layer, okay. And then We're getting to something deeper here because scripture talks about let your yes be yes, you know, be no. This is Matthew chapter five. Let your yes be yes, you know, be no. Why? Because there should be congruence between what comes out of my mouth and what my life produces. Being a person of your word, right?

Speaker: Galatians includes faithfulness amongst the fruit of the spirit, right? Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, self-control. Faithfulness isn't flashy. It's just not.

Speaker: But it's showing up. It's stewardship. It's consistency. It's doing what you said you would do. It's becoming someone whose words carry weight because your behavior has demonstrated that they can. That's spiritual formation. This is not about perfection.

Speaker: There are legitimate reasons that we sometimes just cannot do what we tended to do. That's real. But again, you can be honest about that. Circumstances change, bodies get tired, emergencies happen, priorities shift. That is okay. But where is your heart and your mind at the time in which you say something to yourself or others? Wisdom sometimes requires changing the plan. Yes, absolutely. Integrity doesn't mean I never change my mind. Integrity means when my actions can no longer match my words, I communicate. Okay.

Speaker: If they don't line up, I communicate about it. That's respect. That's building trust. That's being a person of your word. It's being faithful. Now, let's say this is a strength of yours.

Speaker: You are reliable and faithful and you follow through. Where can you help other people who are struggling with this? Because I want to help you understand it better also for yourself and for people around you.

Speaker: Here's the thing. Follow through builds trust. And if we're looking at a life of flourishing, you want to build a life of trust between whether it's between family members, friends, romantic relationships, coworkers. Like this is such an important thing. But if you don't follow through, it's going to disrupt trust.

Speaker: Every time you say something and then do it, something happens. Your child learns, hey, mom's word means something. Your spouse learns, i could depend on you.

Speaker: Your employees learn when she says something, it's going to happen. Your friends learn if he says he's showing up, he's going to show up.

Speaker: Your word begins to predict reality. That is trust. But the opposite happens too. I'll call you and then nothing. I'll send it tomorrow, then nothing. I'll take care of it, then nothing. Eventually, people stop believing your words. Ooh, that hurts.

Speaker: They may still love you. They may still think you're a wonderful person, but they stop building expectations around what you say. and that's why follow-through isn't merely about productivity. Follow-through is deeply relational.

Speaker: It's spiritually be because it's about how you feel about yourself and stewarding what God's put in front of you. You know, it's, you know, physical, mental, emotional is helping you become better in those spaces and building a foundation. Follow through is also relational. It matters significantly in interpersonal relationships.

Speaker: But then there's this other person watching, right? You. Here's what I want to turn. the I want to turn this inward. Okay. How many promises have you made to yourself?

Speaker: Monday, I'm starting. Tomorrow, I'm getting up earlier. I'm going stop doing that and I'm going to start saving and I'm going to take care of my body. I'm to set that boundary. going to make time for God. And then you don't. And then you promise again and then you don't. Eventually, you're not only struggling with follow through, you're struggling with self-trust because you've trained yourself not to believe yourself. Maybe the solution isn't making a bigger promise. Maybe It's making a smaller promise and keeping it, starting with baby steps, starting somewhere you know you can do. Start rebuilding evidence that your own words mean something.

Speaker: So I understand it now. This brings me back to Lethal Shooter. He shoots, he misses, but there's an important part. of his story, the miss gives him information. He doesn't have to turn the miss into his identity. Absolutely not. I'm terrible at this. I'm no discipline. I'm just inconsistent. I always do this. I always miss. No, he looks at what happened, learns, adjusts, and then I understand it now.

Speaker: What if that's how we approach our lives? You said you'd work out three times this week and you didn't. Don't immediately say, oh, I'm just undisciplined. Forget it. Ask yourself, what happened?

Speaker: Was I exhausted or did I schedule this poorly? Do I need to look at a different time? Was my goal unrealistic? Did something repeatedly interfere? Maybe I need to be aware of my barriers and pivot, adjust. Was I avoiding discomfort?

Speaker: Is there some affirmations or prayer, something I could do beforehand to overcome that discomfort? Did I actually prioritize something else? Do I need a accountability? Do i need to do this with someone initially while I'm forming this habit?

Speaker: Do I need a different system? Do I need to go to bed early? What did the miss teach me? So we are going to shoot and then assess and then adjust and then shoot again. This is the part I think many people miss. They shoot, miss, shoot, miss, shoot, miss, shoot. same strategy, same environment, same barriers, same result, and eventually they conclude, I'm just not disciplined.

Speaker: No, absolutely not. That's not you. Listen to me. I want to help you understand it. Anyone, anywhere, whatever you believe about yourself, you can make this happen for yourself. You just need an aligned foundation. Stop living a fragmented life. Start taking baby steps. Maybe you haven't stopped long enough just to understand the miss. So here's the rhythm I want you to practice. You're going to take the shot, whatever it might be. You say you're going to do something.

Speaker: Make the aligned choice, right? You assess what actually happened. Did I do what I wanted to do? If it didn't play out the way you wanted it to, you just adjust. You change the system or the expectation or the environment or the support, whatever is necessary. And then you take the shot again. You try the new approach and keep repeating that process.

Speaker: That is how growth happens. All right. This is what I call the aligned living foundation. Like everything I do in this pursuit of wholeness, I'm brewing, I'm helping you build a foundation. Then when life happens, life is always lifing. It's all right because you have a strong foundation. You know how to continue to build and follow through in midst of the the waves and the storms and all that because you're on a solid foundation.

Speaker: You know, this is why I talk so much about this because follow through doesn't live in just one pillar. It's integrated. Spiritually, am I becoming faithful? Are my choices congruent with what I say I believe?

Speaker: Physically, do I have energy and capacity to do what I'm committed to do? And if you don't, you could change that, right? Mentally, do I have the systems that help me remember, prioritize, and execute? Emotionally, can I tolerate discomfort without escaping it?

Speaker: Socially, can I set boundaries? Can I say no? Do I say rest yes to the right people and places? Do my relationships support the person I'm becoming or want to become? Financially, can I delay immediate gratification to honor what I've decided matters more?

Speaker: This is why I don't want you to walk away thinking, I just need more discipline. I want you to ask what kind of life makes follow through more likely. The alignment gap is something you've heard me talk about, the difference between where you are to where you want to be. So here's another way to think about it.

Speaker: What I say matters. And then there's what i intend to do and then what i actually choose then what my life consistently reflects the distance between those things is what i call the alignment gap okay the goal isn't shame the goal's awareness that's it because once you see the gap you can start asking why is it there And then I could do something about it, right? So my challenge to you for the next seven days, pay attention to your word, not just what you tell other people, but what you tell yourself before you commit to something. Just pause for a second.

Speaker: Do I actually mean this? Do I have the capacity for this? What exactly am I going to do? And if it's something that, you know, you know, you have to commit to, to make a big difference in your life and where you want to go, a health goal or whatever.

Speaker: um When you say, do I have the capacity for it? And you're like, actually, like right now, I'm not sure where I fit it in. Okay. Don't just say you're not going to pursue that goal. Adjust your priorities. Maybe you have to adjust your timing or become more efficient at something or less, you know, scrolling or saying no to this opportunity in the season. So you could do more of this.

Speaker: If you don't follow through after that, instead of immediately beating yourself up, investigate, right? Was it a biological thing, mental, emotional, relational, spiritual? Did you overcommit or were you just avoiding something?

Speaker: Many times I think we just fail to create the system to be successful. You know, we default to what we default to that's not serving us. And we have to be willing to say this too. Did you simply choose something else?

Speaker: Because understanding ourselves doesn't eliminate accountability. It makes meaningful accountability possible. So being a person of your word isn't something you were either born with or not. Hear me loud and clear. It's something you practice.

Speaker: And every small act of follow through is a vote for the person you're becoming. Every time your behavior matches your values, every time your actions match your words, every time you say no of giving a dishonest yes, every time you repair when you've dropped the ball,

Speaker: Every time you miss, then assess, then adjust, and then try again, you're closing that alignment gap. So the next time you miss the shot, don't immediately judge yourself. Study the miss. What's it teaching you?

Speaker: Make that adjustment, pick the ball back up, and shoot again until you can say, I understand it now. Last thing I'm going to leave you with. Your words should predict your behavior.

Speaker: when you're thinking about being a person of your word, a following through, what does that practically mean? Your words, things you say should predict predict your behavior. Hold on to that tightly.

Speaker: Give it to God. And thank you for listening. i appreciate you more than you know. If this hit you in some type of way, it probably will hit someone else in your life. So the most amazing thing you could do for me and for that person to share this episode. um Leave a review if you feel like it, because that helps people find this that are looking for this type of thing that don't know it's there, right?
