DailySaintsPod: Good evening, good afternoon, good morning to wherever you're listening from. It is the Daily Saints pod. with Zach and Greg. I am your host today, Zach. And as always, joined by my illustrious, wonderful co -host, Greg.

DailySaintsPod: How are you doing, mate? You all right?

Greg: oh I'm absolutely buzzing. My first Tuesday night back at St Mary's this season. Uh, just... What a time to be alive. Look, I know... Uh... My ankle.

Greg: is swollen because I've sprained it last week and standing on it all night and bouncing about probably wasn't the best idea. And I've just got zero regrets. I'm ready to go and do it again Saturday. Can it be Saturday tomorrow?

Greg: just... Love football, innit? Gotta be done. Just what a game. Brilliant, brilliant game of championship football. Both sides looking... decent Swansea came and give it a good go but fortress of mary's in it Just...

DailySaintsPod: And it was just a very, very, very entertaining game. for a Tuesday night.

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: somehow players that only played the other day. who have spent a lot of the time you know us worrying about them being exhausted how I don't know how Laren. managed 85 minutes uh i'm glad he did

Greg: yeah I said he should have come off in the 50th, but he put in a proper shift.

DailySaintsPod: Hmm. You literally did. you were You sent me a text that was like... song from Obama now, surely? And I'm like, eh. We'll see. No, you're you're right. and As I've said to you and as some of the listeners will know, I've been sort of going through and and trying to clean up our YouTube a little bit and, you know, making all the playlists and stuff. And and I've come across a lot of our older episodes, Greg. and You know, there's a lot of discourse around Russell Martin and you might be going, Zach, why?

DailySaintsPod: Why are you talking about that? We've just beaten Swansea 3 -1. And I think that's like precisely why is that. Man, like how much misery as Saints fans we have had to put up with, even during a really positive season like last season, because of everything and the fallout of Spygate and us.

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: being made to feel awful and us feeling awful and the club putting us in that position

Greg: And also, like... the the first Half of the season. Right, which was just not great.

DailySaintsPod: you Plus, yeah, just DOS getting beaten by everybody left, right and centre, being at home by Preston in October and miserable grey weather.

Greg: if

Greg: Yeah.

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: And we started on minus four. this season and you know to see us climb out of that now. to the point where we're essentially mid -table, which is a place that we didn't really occupy a lot of.

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: last season unless we're on the way down. So yeah, I'm just, it's just. just taking the time to appreciate it.

Greg: If, uh... If you... gave us back those four points by the way we'd be top of the table

DailySaintsPod: Which... there you go right and and that's what that's kind of the other the other side of it is that we are

Greg: good

DailySaintsPod: we are really onto something and

Greg: Mm.

DailySaintsPod: It's nice because it's been you know a couple of games now of of we're going to be back to our best. And it turns out we've now just become one of those like. home form is really important teams which is

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: for considering for a long time that wasn't St Mary's it wasn't a place that a lot of people were looking forward to going it was you know it was difficult there were some days where you know

Greg: Hmm.

DailySaintsPod: can you be bothered to drag yourself down there? I know you specifically, even you know with your season ticket and your kids and even your kids not really wanting to go because it's sort of like, I don't want to go just get battered.

DailySaintsPod: Despite your son's, you know, ever optimism of us winning 5 -0 every single game, when he'd be lucky really to see us even score a goal.

Greg: yeah

Greg: He changed it to 4 -2 today, so...

DailySaintsPod: Well, there you go.

Greg: Mix it up.

DailySaintsPod: But i would like to I would like to point out, Greg, that my prediction of 3 -1 was accurate. I just really wish I'd named the goal scorers.

Greg: Yeah I know. I was, I was really... Really hoping we get another one.

DailySaintsPod: To be fair, I was too, just to see just to enjoy it.

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: but

Greg: I was...

DailySaintsPod: No, it's just a really good game.

Greg: It's so good, isn't it?

DailySaintsPod: A really good game of, as you pointed out, championship football. And that first half was just like... oh it was just so much energy from from both sides and it was it was you know obviously we managed to go in front but

Greg: Yeah. What? It's exactly... It's exactly like we said in the preview, though, right? Swansea flying high in the form they're in. Vipotnik back in the starting line -up, looking to kick on from from his incredible season last season and presumably as a boost to their team, keeping him.

Greg: and being able to bring him back in and Just... Swansea looked good. Swansea played well. They reminded me a bit of us at the start of last season. or like the middle start of last season where they're playing really good football like impressive good stuff the transition's great they're just a little bit toothless in the final third which

Greg: Or at least they were tonight. And I guess, to be fair, their last two games were 0 -0 draws, right? So I think that it's a... a pretty safe analytical point to suggest that They struggle a bit in front of goal at the moment, but...

Greg: But it looks like it's all going to click into place. I think they'll be all right this season.

DailySaintsPod: Yeah, I think.

Greg: but

DailySaintsPod: I think they're a very surprising package.

Greg: But they fell into the trap. They came and tried to play football against us. And when teams tried to come and play proper football against us, we we come alive and come into our element. And Leo does Leo things. Vinicius sends players for hot dogs. Like, Matsky...

Greg: makes the one of the most incredible selfless decisions to make a beautiful assist Just, yeah, just great. Bree puts it on a plate for Laren. Laren, if he keeps scoring at this rate, by the way, five goals in six games, he's on for a 37 -goal season. So, like...

DailySaintsPod: Look, we we what we've got, honestly, hope with Laron is he doesn't pick up an injury, right?

Greg: who

DailySaintsPod: That's my only big concern is that whilst it was fantastic to see him for 85 minutes today. you know the I think the goal is clearly the the goal is clearly to get him to a point where he can manage 90 -minute games, is what I'm starting to think now.

Greg: Still running.

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: And you know there there was already talk from Tonda now that he's going to start potentially looking into the academy, maybe take a look at Prince and see if he's ready to make the step up with the the lack of cover we've got.

DailySaintsPod: uh or lack of perceived cover because you know arguably they there's situations where Dobbin could potentially step in there. And I so say lack of perceived cover. It's probably just my own delusion to make me feel better.

DailySaintsPod: But speaking of personnel, like...

Greg: look I think...

DailySaintsPod: I'll make your point first, mate, and then we'll maybe talk about the lineups.

Greg: I was just going to say, I actually think that when Mubarak came on today, he looked good. Ciao. making dangerous runs. He is not as good at holding the ball up as Laring, but he was still holding the ball up a bit today. A couple of times it bounced off him just a little bit too far, but a couple of times it bounced off him to one of our players and created something decent. so it's And it's in you know that's in a what a like a nine -minute cameo right at the end of the game.

Greg: so

DailySaintsPod: Yeah, if if that, to be honest, you know. Yeah, nine nine minutes if you...

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: come to You know. I don't have any time. five passes in total and a shot so he he he got there

Greg: Yeah, decent shot as well. won the corner.

DailySaintsPod: Yeah, well... but it forced them to you know It forced us to get a corner, but only because their their goalkeeper was being very...

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: cautious to say the least but it did take a deflection on the way through

Greg: Yeah, I mean, it was it was a tough angle, to be fair.

DailySaintsPod: it's it's It's a tough angle.

Greg: It was not the easiest.

DailySaintsPod: It's a shot. That's more than we could hope for for a lot of the previous seasons we've been in.

Greg: yeah Right? How many times have we sat on this podcast screaming, just hit the ball?

DailySaintsPod: and

Greg: is We've got players that are willing to do that.

DailySaintsPod: Indeed.

Greg: You can't criticise it.

DailySaintsPod: Right. So obviously, let's get to the well the main main event. The main event is obviously the preamble where we get super excited and talk about all of the the joy that we managed to score three goals, which is probably why Obama did better.

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: if we were If we were nil -nil, mate, I don't know if you'd have the same opinion. However...

Greg: Well maybe.

DailySaintsPod: Personnel wise. So we were we were both a little bit off, but also it seems to just be a team that kind of picks itself at this point.

Greg: I mean, it was our best 11. I think.

DailySaintsPod: Yeah.

Greg: Hands down, that I think for that is our best 11 players.

DailySaintsPod: Interesting. but we haven't even seen Zach Abbott yet. So how can we say that?

Greg: Alright, based on the current information available to me, this is the team I think performs our best 11. Zach Abbott is more than welcome to come and put in a fighting performance and prove me wrong.

Greg: Right.

DailySaintsPod: I did all right.

Greg: Matsky, there's an argument, right?

DailySaintsPod: with the goods.

Greg: I would hear an argument between Fellows and Matsky. I think they are both very capable in that role. And I would argue that. If you put either one of them in that position, I could say the same thing about it being our best 11 players.

Greg: but But this lineup, for me... that's That's what I want to see. as often as as possible given minutes and rotations that's

DailySaintsPod: No, i i I agree with you.

Greg: That's the case.

DailySaintsPod: It wasn't exactly what we predicted. we you know They kept it simple and they didn't they didn't feel... Like they maybe should have gone three in the middle, which was kind of what we discussed beforehand.

Greg: Hmm.

DailySaintsPod: I think Fellows in... for Matski was the right call because of just the sheer amount of balls that Fellows was able to pump into the box. It took Laron a bit of time to get into the game, but still managed to score, so it's not that much of a problem.

DailySaintsPod: And then... because of the fact that Fellows had completely run down their defence by the time that Matsky came on. You know, that little bit of edge of physicality, I think, allowed him to kind of, you know, set up an absolutely incredible assist.

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: And again, a player that I did a lot of research into and I'm really glad is very much coming good.

Greg: Hmm.

DailySaintsPod: you know, it

Greg: leo Leo calls there right back. unspeakable discomfort for the entire game. Just, just... absolutely had him on toast almost every time he ran at him.

Greg: He will... It will be... seeing Leo Siena running past him in his nightmares for weeks to come, I'm sure.

DailySaintsPod: and And that's the thing.

Greg: Like...

DailySaintsPod: and let's Let's not pretend that, you know, we we talked about it beforehand. I know Swansea have like a really poor record at St. Mary's. I think they've won the one of their last like 13 or something like that.

Greg: Hmm.

Greg: I still definitively remember Boxing Day, smashing them 5 -0.

DailySaintsPod: but

DailySaintsPod: yeah and And again, during that Premier League season, I think I spoke about in the preview, we beat them in the Cup. And that obviously caused. It was like the little bit of hope that we had that we were going to see Tyler Dibling turn into an incredible player and Suleiman was going to score for fun.

DailySaintsPod: I actually set up a bet with another podcast, if you remember rightly, that Suleiman might...

Greg: Mm.

Greg: Indeed. Neither of you needed to buy a Sulamana shirt. What a surprise.

DailySaintsPod: Look, we we both kind of knew and hoped, right? that's that was That was where I'm at. But. you know... it was just I found it a very, very enjoyable game.

DailySaintsPod: And you're right, the lineup... pretty much was the strongest one we have and i wouldn't really have changed anything around as i said zach abbott we don't really know what he's like at this point so that opinion might change

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: when we get a chance to see him.

Greg: 100 % agree. Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: would play pretty well, you know.

Greg: Bye.

DailySaintsPod: Schlotterbeck as well is just...

Greg: Bye. As a defensive partnership, they seem to have, and I don't know if it was just like a specifically this game thing to try and counteract the... the physicality of Swansea's midfield.

Greg: or if it's just kind of the system they are looking to kind of implement going forward but they they very notably have when we have possession they're very wide very far apart center backs because the fullback's pushing all the way up And when when we don't have possession... Wood.

Greg: basically Just stood on the pot neck for the entire game. and nullified him as much as possible. And Schlotterbeck pushed up. Like a really high on the press like sometimes he was you know further forward them Prowse and... Flynn Downs and...

Greg: It just works. And they, yeah, they're just. controlled at least especially for the first half just absolutely Controlled and nullified most of Swansea's attack that way

DailySaintsPod: Yeah. and And that can only be, you know... a good thing and let's bear in mind here that this is a Swansea team that are coming into this game. had only conceded one in the league. Right.

DailySaintsPod: And we managed to put three past them because, you know, we... We essentially have the the three players that have become like the pinnacle. of our attack and the pinnacle of our team in my opinion of the three players that scored tonight right you've got you've got larin uh you've got sienta

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: And you've got Azaz who... i saw an interesting back and forth on uh twitter with with alfie talking about like he gets a lot of stick when he doesn't do well and someone replied and was just like well yeah it's precisely why he gets so much stick because when he is like having the absolute game of his life you know like some of the balls we've seen this year along just being able to literally like almost feels like it plucks out the sky and and you know some of the some of the passes that he could make

Greg: so visible.

Greg: Mm.

DailySaintsPod: And goals that he scores, like bear in mind, he was, you know, a so joint top goalscorer for last a year.

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: uh yeah just

Greg: Just the perfect example of a first touch with his right foot. to set up a shot on his left foot for the goal. but like i literally turned to my son i'm like well look you want to play football that's the first touch you want to work on right that's that's how good you've got to be that's that's pinnacle but would i would also make an argument And I fully agree with you about the the goal scorers, but actually...

Greg: for me equally is important. the real solid foundations of of our team. getting the assists. I think Flynn Downs had his best game in a Saints shirt. tonight he He seems to have really matured. He didn't get booked.

DailySaintsPod: i I noticed that.

Greg: Right.

DailySaintsPod: d Even if at one point they did they did try, they like did he did, you know.

Greg: Yeah. do you think it just Do you you think it just took a random podcaster to mention on a sign it a shirt signing session that he gets booked too much to wake him up to...

Greg: and and build that maturity into his game i'm going to claim the credit for it is that That's there.

DailySaintsPod: you can you can You can claim the credit for it, but he has already been booked a few times this season.

Greg: And...

DailySaintsPod: I think that maybe he's very aware that...

Greg: Good.

DailySaintsPod: He's going to be out.

Greg: But it was - It was a very mature performance. really good really solid just just got in the way.

DailySaintsPod: Mm hmm.

Greg: He put himself everywhere. But it was it was very... fairly fought contest more or less throughout. right i don't think don't really i think they were Like...

Greg: almost like record low fouls in the first half. A couple of comings together, but nothing nothing serious at all. And then... Yeah. I mean, it it slowed down.

Greg: in the second half, didn't it? We came out.

DailySaintsPod: second half it was noticeable from from sort of both sides right and But ultimately...

Greg: Second best. Hmm.

DailySaintsPod: you know it picked back up and then and then that sort of Third goal where he's kind of felt like it was coming. uh as did the second to be perfectly honest it was it was not a I didn't feel like I was under threat.

DailySaintsPod: After obviously they scored their penalty, it felt a little bit...

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: the mood had changed slightly.

Greg: So.

DailySaintsPod: ever seen.

Greg: soft penalty, won it.

DailySaintsPod: Ever. It is what it is. like i've been through this I've been through this before.

Greg: All right. for you.

DailySaintsPod: if If it means that we don't have to have VAR, I will take decisions that are occasionally...

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: that If a decision is on the line and it is maybe soft or too hard or whatever, and a ref makes a call...

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: Even if it goes against us, so long as I don't have to part with VAR, I don't care.

Greg: Right. I agree with you, but I will say that... obviously the penalty was the opposite end of the pitch to me so I've had to watch it back to formulate a proper opinion and and think it's soft. But I will say that if...

Greg: That's a penalty. Then Leo's one later where he definitely dived. was a penalty too.

DailySaintsPod: Well, that's that's where you give but that that's the problem is that sometimes you can tell intent a little bit more, right?

Greg: Yeah.

Greg: Hmm.

DailySaintsPod: And I don't even know. There was a bit of a push in the back and the decision was made and ultimately it didn't cost us anything. And you would probably be cross about, you know, if it...

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: wasn't given and we lost, it would probably be more frustrating that he didn't make a different decision other than go down. ultimately it didn't end that way so it's fine and again like it's a thing that

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: we criticized a dozy for last uh game and it's a thing that happens with leo occasionally but quite frankly it doesn't matter because every other part of his football kind of outshines it.

Greg: Hmm.

DailySaintsPod: And it's not. necessarily hugely a problem. but Again, i'll I'll take it, whatever. Obviously, after they they scored, it was it was slightly rocky. But I think you when you talk about maturity, that that's...

DailySaintsPod: what was evident right is that previously

Greg: Which is... Got hold of the ball and grew back into the game.

DailySaintsPod: uh

DailySaintsPod: Previously, what would have happened is that they'd scored the penalty and they'd be like, oh my God, panic.

Greg: Like...

Greg: Mm.

DailySaintsPod: And, you know, they would have then kind of shifted it about and tried to change things too much. And and before you know it, then it's 2 -2. and you know we see we've seen in the past how that can bite us in the backside pretty quickly

Greg: What?

DailySaintsPod: but no it didn't it didn't really seem to do that and we didn't even we didn't i think that

Greg: Oh. stuck to the plan. It was brilliant.

DailySaintsPod: Yeah.

Greg: in

DailySaintsPod: And I think that's on the learn from last game as well. And then didn't try to change too much. I think that's one of the reasons that Laren stayed on for so long is to keep our best, one of our best attacking threats on the ball. He was having a really good game as well.

DailySaintsPod: Got to a vast majority of the balls. And, you know, Matsky for fellows was was was a good decision in the end. Ultimately, it resultd resulted in another goal. And.

Greg: And thats even that is a later change than we normally see.

Greg: Right.

DailySaintsPod: Yep. 100%, like rather than 60 odd, that was 76.

Greg: We normally see... changes. between 60 and 65 and that was 76 and and and the i mean of the front three i would say that fellows looked the least tired but also you've got that other option of Matsuki that you know is going to be able to make an impact and provide a different challenge to a...

Greg: already fatigued. you know fall back

DailySaintsPod: And it proves to be correct. And obviously the other thing is that he was talking about the game beforehand, that he knows what Swansea's game plans are.

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: They'll make changes about the 60th minute to bring on fresh legs. They brought on, you know, they did they had did a change in like the 46th minute. for for for half -time.

Greg: Hmm.

DailySaintsPod: So and they you know what he's done is kind of allowed their fresh legs to get on. You know? run around for a little bit longer. bring on one player that caused him a bit of a nuisance in Matski and then bring the players off when they were literally run ragged, apart from Ward -Prowse, where it almost feels like the...

Greg: Hmm.

DailySaintsPod: the Cam Bragg sub was just to slow down the game more than anything.

Greg: Uh, eh. if I mean, it felt...

DailySaintsPod: Just get her over the line.

Greg: It felt like almost ceremonial. Right? Like, uh...

DailySaintsPod: Yeah, it was it was like swapping the talisman for the new new kid on the block, right?

Greg: The... Yeah. Right, like... yeah the the academy graduate prodigal son who's come back and put in a shift for 90 minutes being subbed off for for the next generation breaking his way through to the team.

DailySaintsPod: who see Who sees him as a hero.

Greg: It was... Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: All you needed there in the middle was like Will Smallbone to hold both their hands and walk off into the sun.

Greg: Yeah.

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: you

Greg: Yeah. like Like, if I thought Tonda had any care at all for that kind of poetry in football, I would call it deliberate. But I know for a fact that... That is not the way that...

Greg: that man's brain is wired.

DailySaintsPod: No, it's it's probably, as I've said, to just kind of continue the slowing of the game and just get it over the line. And also...

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: But one of the things that's also noticeable about that and a thing that we've discussed is that is James Ward -Prowse with two 90 -minute performances in four days at the age of 30. after not playing football regularly for like...

DailySaintsPod: two to three years which says

Greg: Never. Just never in doubt, was it? he I mean...

DailySaintsPod: No, it's he's just the same player, which is why he's a Shea Charles replacement, clearly.

Greg: Again. Like... Yeah. a player that literally played every minute of premier league football in an entire season right it it it doesn't surprise me in the slightest that he is fit enough and capable enough of doing that and he I mean him and Flynn just building this really...

Greg: really credible partnership where he's quite happy to be the playmaker and Flynn's quite happy to be the disruptor and it just kind of works.

DailySaintsPod: What does this mean for Yander when he's back fit then?

Greg: Right, they're not. Oh yeah.

DailySaintsPod: It's an interesting question.

Greg: It does. Okay. What a great problem to have. Oh no, I've got too many good players. I can't get them all on the pitch at the same time. let me just put on my backup left back to banging a screamer from 40 yards like it's just't it's just It just feels like everything at the moment is just building to be.

DailySaintsPod: We have a...

Greg: Just an incredible season. that's just I can't help but feel it's all coming together at the perfect time

DailySaintsPod: take take it Take it game by game because I know what's happened.

Greg: Right.

DailySaintsPod: you've had it you've had a weve You've had a massive day. Really good day. You're absolutely buzzing. As you said, you want to get back Saturday and like what would bring us back to earth is like a nil -nil draw or something like that, which.

Greg: Yeah.

Greg: Yeah. I mean, Bristol City are a...

DailySaintsPod: Isn't what we're hoping for?

Greg: proper bogey team for us as well. they We do not...

DailySaintsPod: but No, no, no, no. We broke that last time by drawing against them, if you remember rightly, towards the end of the season.

Greg: Hmm. was a... it was a pretty miserable draw though wasn't it right like

DailySaintsPod: It was a miserable draw, but also if we just got the job done in the other two games.

Greg: i would I would call that still. I would call that still a pretty bogey. kind of game. Right.

DailySaintsPod: Okay, I agree with you.

Greg: don't know if I don't know if drawing with a... a bogey team can so like break the curve i don't know if that's how it works

DailySaintsPod: I agree with you. the The real test of poetry will be if if Don Ballard comes back and scores against us, right? Because that's that's where that's where the universe would...

Greg: yeah written in the stars, that's bound to happen. Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: That's what the universe would really like to mug us off as fans.

Greg: Auf Wiedersehen. That's almost inevitable. I mean, like... a fiver on Don Ballard to score first is is probably the better the match. You mix that with Flynn Downs to get booked, because he didn't get booked tonight, so it's coming.

Greg: There's probably a tasty double in there somewhere.

DailySaintsPod: Yeah, more than likely, but it's it's... It's one of those things where the other the other point around that kind of stuff is... that people worry about squad depth and myself included look back at past players and see what they're up to but I think I don't I don't look back in the same way that some people seem to you which is I'll be left this really good player go it's like this player did well at the time and has fit in in another system and another...

DailySaintsPod: like team, right? Like, for example, Ben Brereton -Diaz is never a player in a Southampton shirt that ever produced a performance, in my opinion.

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: That doesn't mean that he hasn't in other teams. It doesn't mean that he will not in the future for other teams.

Greg: Yeah. I mean, I was... of saying exactly this about Don Ballard in the in the car to my sister -in -law today. i'm like like yeah he's he's a brilliant championship goal scorer with the team that he is with.

Greg: Because he went away and got minutes in the lower league and worked himself up and got himself into this shape and into this system that works for him.

Greg: If he stayed at Southampton, he would still be wasting away. He wouldn't have broke through to the first team to get the confidence to go on this incredible you know run of goal scoring and become this top -notch striker. And if he did break into the first team, he's another player that likes to run in behind. So we don't need lob long balls for him to hold them up anyway, because that's what we do. like

DailySaintsPod: Well, yeah, I think this is the thing, right? they're like with they're like We've got like a dime a dozen of various scenarios like that. And there's, interestingly enough...

DailySaintsPod: ones that aren't mentioned like Broglie who's a like you know and I know that he wasn't an academy product but when he came through on his loan there was huge amount of conversation about the fact that he didn't come in permanent and we should have done more for him because he decided to go back to Chelsea I don't know I don't know what Nathan Teller's up to anymore I don't know if he's still at Leverkusen but you know he had a good so first season there obviously he was part of that like you know invincible season or whatever under Xavi Alonso.

Greg: Hmm.

Greg: Yeah.

Greg: Hmm.

DailySaintsPod: But... you see what i mean right you get you get what i'm putting down here which is we have a lot of former players that yes it's lovely that they're you know that they're doing well and some of them are academy products and it would have been really nice to see them thrive in a saint shirt but the only way that they can get to the areas in their career that they're in is for us to have gone well instead of playing this player we're going to take a risk and play this you know 18 year old for the next six months where he's going to have to develop and not score every single game and

Greg: Mm.

DailySaintsPod: as you've pointed out, potentially will end up then being limited to a cameo. It's a lot of pressure to put on a young developing player to then just expect them to start performing.

Greg: yeah

Greg: Right, exactly.

DailySaintsPod: overnight.

Greg: and And especially...

DailySaintsPod: It's just a thing I saw and thought of.

Greg: especially when the games come thick and fast like this right you can't Can't afford. That. time. right you have to You have to go out to get to get promoted, which is what we want to do. You have to go out and win every game, which means that you can't go into a game with the focus of, well, I really need to give this young player minutes to develop his career.

Greg: because what you need is a young... you need someone that's going to go out and win you the game. and And those two things are not... always the same thing. So... Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: It's the Adoze paradox, the Archer paradox, the, you know, the the Obama paradox is every, is that they need game time to develop, but are you going to give them game time?

Greg: Good luck.

Greg: Mm.

DailySaintsPod: You know, is Adoze going to start over Cienza?

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: No, but we also can't get rid of every single option we have in case he ends up getting injured.

Greg: Yeah. Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: So this is this is where these problems lie.

Greg: He might. came might You might start over Cienza if we've got Tuesday, Saturday, Tuesday, Saturday, and in the middle of that somewhere. Yeah, all right, let's give him 60 and Leo 30.

DailySaintsPod: And it's the same the same with dubbing.

Greg: that's a possibility He's got to...

DailySaintsPod: Do you start dubbing over his ass?

Greg: Not the way Azaz played tonight.

DailySaintsPod: Bye.

Greg: right if he that's the thing he was on top form kicking up an absolute storm uh obviously the goal And. you know, basically the assist of the assist of the third goal as well, right? It was him.

Greg: uh making him winning that 50 50 ball Actually, it was probably more a 64 ball against 40 ball against him that he managed to get in and win and then put. Matzki through so Yeah, it's nice. Everyone.

Greg: Everyone seems to rise together. Right. We don't seem to have. don't seem to have some people having good performances but other players letting it down we're either all Okay.

Greg: and like sure you could call it drop points but also we haven't lost Five games unbeaten now.

DailySaintsPod: it's it's I think it's very, if we get over 10. becomes a different, like with 10 games unbeaten, we don't think about the fact that realistically the draw at Lincoln wasn't wasn't a win.

Greg: Mm.

Greg: It went mad.

DailySaintsPod: Right, that won't matter.

Greg: if if in If in... five games time. Weave. We've just battered Pompey 6 -0 and put ourselves top of the table. No one's going to be thinking about a one -all draw away at Lincoln, are they?

Greg: Just saying. Like...

DailySaintsPod: Exactly that.

Greg: it's on the horizon.

DailySaintsPod: But... i I can understand. people's concerns though because like with anything I think it's just like in football generally. All of this feels like it's... It could shatter, right? if you James Wood -Prowse picks up an injury alongside Azaz and then Cienza.

Greg: Hmm.

DailySaintsPod: And then Laron picks up an injury and Mbamah doesn't quite kick on and has a lot of pressure on him very quickly. And we drop five, six points here and then.

Greg: but that's then it's Then it's next man up.

DailySaintsPod: twists and turns.

Greg: Right. I think. I think that the depth of the squad is... is... probably good enough. And maybe... At least good enough to carry us to January.

DailySaintsPod: Interesting.

Greg: Right.

DailySaintsPod: there you go that's the kicker right uh carry us to the next which is mad that we have now two games in a row talked about the next transfer window directly after it closed

Greg: Like me. No, but like... Good luck.

Greg: But no that's it, right? don't agree I mean maybe it is just enough. right maybe it all comes good there's There's just an element of maybe in there, right? You're right, we're three or four injuries away from concern, but...

Greg: I mean, isn't anyone at this level realistically?

DailySaintsPod: True. and But my point is that like...

Greg: Like if if West Ham's...

DailySaintsPod: We we like to play it risky.

Greg: If West Ham lose Bowen. Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: Yeah.

Greg: it's It's the same the same problem. so

DailySaintsPod: say and we we like we we we really enjoy playing it risky okay that's that's that's my point but

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: for you know for all of the Negativity aside. Tonight was a fantastic victory. it was you know what i would like to call textbook tonda saints right it was exactly what we wanted

Greg: Mmm. Is that because we were rubbish for 20 minutes of the second half?

DailySaintsPod: No, because if you remember rightly, it used to be that we scored like three goals in the first half and did nothing the second half until eventually and then it switched at some point.

Greg: No, you're right. Yeah

DailySaintsPod: And then it depend that we realized it depended entirely onto the personnel.

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: No, what what I mean is that the if i if you were to ask me...

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: If I was to actually ask you, considering we've switched around these hosting roles for the time being. who the three goal scorers would have been the three that scored I would have named but I didn't ask myself that question so you can either believe me or not believe me but that's my point is from like an attacking point of view you know fellows has got that one goal but

Greg: I don't think so. Just because I don't think they're the three I'd have named, I'd have probably put fellows in there.

DailySaintsPod: you Yeah, you you would. I don't want you to recurse the boy, but my point is that he's he's the one that's lumping all of the balls in to be able to be picked up by everybody else.

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: and you know, I just think that. It was just a very, very good performance. It was a Tuesday night. I don't know how expected it was.

Greg: Blip.

DailySaintsPod: We predicted it. But I i i have started to be more optimistic in my predictions, thanks to you, which is why I'm significantly less accurate than I used to be.

Greg: That's brilliant. That was brilliant, mate. Look, it's been a great night. I didn't think we'd fit Kevin Schlotterbeck's name into a song, but we did it. Actually, it does that does make me think of... one thing that I do have to moan about. actually.

DailySaintsPod: interesting right let's go why not this is this is a rolled reversal here mate

Greg: Yeah. When... when Joe Erivo used to score goals. He had personalized gold music. We used to play gold.

Greg: And I just think that. Ole, ole, ole, ole. Fina, zaz, zaz, zaz would pop off as goal music. I'm just saying that that is the perfect fit.

DailySaintsPod: Look.

Greg: like Like, I'm not sure i'm not sure that they were getting...

DailySaintsPod: Why don't... You send it to the fan advisory board.

Greg: Yeah. I'm not sure that Drew Adidi has the same ring when Kyle Aaron scores. I get that. But I just think that Olay Olay has the right vibes. uh So that's my that's my moan for the day.

Greg: a A ridiculous problem to to acknowledge, right? like When I think about some of the things we've had to moan about on this podcast over the last three seasons, that ranks really near.

DailySaintsPod: Yeah, Dom. Try to process it.

Greg: The... the ridiculous end of that spectrum. but

DailySaintsPod: At what point? We were literally this year, we were like, just delete the club.

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: and now you're Now you're like, we don't have...

Greg: Yeah. Oh, oh.

DailySaintsPod: what

Greg: I've heard the same goal music too much because we scored too often. We need to change it up. the

DailySaintsPod: I'm sorry, I think that's just broken me a little bit, is it?

Greg: a but sit

DailySaintsPod: was what From the perspective of like... You know... That's just, oh. that's That's just the... It's just very silly it's such a it's such a silly thing it's very like modern football fan like the goal music doesn't fit right after what we've seen with the qpr anthem recently and the banning of songs in certain areas the fact that you're like

Greg: Yeah.

Greg: Yeah.

DailySaintsPod: where's finnaz personalized gold music and i could just see this now being asked at the fans forum instead of like an actual reasonable question about like i don't know away travel or like accessibility and it's like nah mate i've been a saints fan all my life i've really really you know really loved saints it's it's been the the heart of my family but also when's finnaz getting his own music because i miss a reoss Just...

DailySaintsPod: Absolutely incredible. So with that... That wonderful bit of madness, it at what is now... coming up to 11 .30pm. With both of us with early work in the morning.

DailySaintsPod: We are going to bid you farewell after a fantastic Saints victory. Greg, thank you as ever. for joining me.

Greg: It's been a pleasure

DailySaintsPod: Uh, We will be all over the social medias as we always are. We are on Facebook. We are on... Twitter or X the Everything app. We are on Blue Sky. We are on YouTube. We are on Instagram and TikTok and just just pretty much everywhere. Give us a shout.

DailySaintsPod: give us a like give us a subscribe give us a comment do all that wonderful stuff as i said we've really started to kick on this season and grow. and we really appreciate everybody's contributions and feedbacks and bits and pieces. It really has helped us.

DailySaintsPod: And yeah, we will be back tomorrow for... Something. Maybe. We might end up taking a day off. It entirely depends on whether or not my wonderful co -host gets some electric in his house properly.

Greg: Fingers crossed.

DailySaintsPod: Fingers crossed. But until then. Have a wonderful evening, afternoon or morning, and we'll see you in the next one.
