Newcastle's Defeat to Manchester United

00:00:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello and welcome to the Daily Newcastle. My name is Ian Mackay. I'm joined by my good pal Michael Grameslaw to pick the bones out of, I don't know why possibly possibly the the deepest depth that we have plumbed watching Newcastle this season. um Manchester United won.
00:00:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Newcastle United 0. ah I still can't believe that we haven't scored against that Manchester United team. But we will get into that. Michael, how are you?
00:00:52
Michael
Yeah, I thought my day had peaked earlier this morning when I did the the solo pod on this and then um'm coming back to to relive it for a third time. um I'm a glutton for punishment right here.
00:01:05
Michael
But yeah, it's it's one of those where I've recovered a bit from the game, but you just can't believe how poor we were, really. And for me, that's the that's the worst thing.
00:01:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:01:16
Michael
You're playing arguably the worst Man United side. in a very, very long time when you consider the injuries. I mean, that back four, we were just talking before the pod, ah you know, unless you're aware of Malassia from his Iredivise days or Joro from his time in League One, you don't know any of that back line and we didn't cause them any problems whatsoever.
00:01:39
Michael
But yeah, we'll get

Comparing Performances: Chelsea vs. Manchester United

00:01:40
Michael
into it. um I'm ranting a bit. So clearly I haven't recovered as much of that.
00:01:44
Global Sports Podcast Network
Straight in. Straight in. Oh, God. will e qui a Look, apologies for anyone who's looking for the full half hour tonight. I can't talk about this for 30 minutes. I was so disappointed. I couldn't sleep afterwards.
00:01:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
I literally couldn't sleep. um But i first the positives. We all wanted an unchanged side because of the first half performance against Chelsea.
00:02:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Eddie Howe rewarded us with an unchanged side.
00:02:14
Michael
yay
00:02:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
that be so different just four days later on I just don't go six days later on um would you have done anything different Michael
00:02:23
Michael
No, i would have I would have kept the same side. and i think it's one of those, it's easy to say, i would have done this, I would have done that, um which is a bit of what I did earlier this morning. But I think in the grand reality of it all, after that first half against Chelsea,
00:02:41
Michael
You'd be a fool to change anything, I think. We were really, really good. Second half, obviously not as good, but you were hoping that the same would happen here against Manchester United, and that wasn't really the case, was it?
00:02:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, one thing that we did get against Chelsea in the second half was that we created some big chances. We did. We created some chances which we should have taken and didn't. Barnes put that one past the post ah right at the end.
00:03:06
Michael
Yeah.
00:03:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
But at least it looked like we were as much of a threat as Chelsea were after they'd got back to 2-2. That wasn't the story against Manchester United, sadly.
00:03:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
um I thought we started quite well, actually. I thought we did press well. It looked good. i was excited in the first 10, 15 minutes. And then we concede.
00:03:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, he hit the ball really well. He did hit it really, really well. it's Is it a worldie? It's a really well-controlled volley.
00:03:39
Michael
No.
00:03:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know if it's a worldie. It's like somebody's just thrown the ball up and asked them to hit it as hard as he can from the centre of the goal, which he did to put it very well.
00:03:42
Michael
No, well.
00:03:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
and What do you think about Ramsdale's performance in trying to stop that? do you think he should have stopped it? He got a good hand on it.
00:04:02
Michael
Any time a goalkeeper gets a full hand on the ball, he should be doing a lot better than what Ramsdale did there. And you can forgive him if it's an absolute rocket. yeah I'm thinking Oberfemi Martins against Tottenham Hotspur. Let's be honest, I can't remember who the goalkeeper was, whether it was Brad Friedel, Jareli O'Gomez, whoever. Whoever was getting a hand on that, it was snapping off.
00:04:25
Michael
Ramsdale got a hand on this and you know it could have very easily got it around the post, but he just taps it into the side net. It's one of those where Ramsdale as a whole for me, it seems like there's at least one incident every single game now where we're going.
00:04:42
Michael
Yeah, Could he have done a bit better there? he should Maybe he should have done a bit better there. And that's the instance in this game. And for me, it has kind of cost us a point because Man United looked like doing very, very little.
00:04:56
Michael
um In reality, they've got the goal through Dogu, through a little bit of an error from Ramsdale. And it's not the first time we've said that this year. It's not the first time we've said it this month. It's not even the first time I've said it this week.
00:05:11
Michael
so So it's quite tragic for Aram's deal. And I can't wait until we get a confident goalkeeper in personally.
00:05:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, ah yeah, I mean, i
00:05:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
I played in goal and that was a really good shot. But Ramseil's down quickly, his hand's out there. It's the full hand that's on it. He just sort of limp-wristed, really, pushes it into the back of the net.
00:05:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't really... Is that the point where I'm starting to go, OK, right. I know Ramseil's good at passing the ball around, but Pog would have stopped that. Pog would have been four inches longer anyway, so we'd have had two arms behind it.
00:05:50
Michael
Yeah.
00:05:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So maybe it is time for Nick Pope to come back, because he did appear on the substitutes bench as our backup goalkeeper. am I don't know.

Tactical Challenges and Formation Surprises

00:06:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know. But anyway, falling behind.
00:06:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah Before we did that, by the way, did you think that Amorim had out-tacticked Eddie Howe at the start? Because they played 4-4-2 and they never ever play 4-4-2. He's nearly been sacked over Stiketer with 4-3-3.
00:06:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
four three three
00:06:19
Michael
I think I'd seen this just a little bit before. um And I think this is the way that Amarim's not been told to play, but he's told to consider and because I'd seen it in the game against Bournemouth. Um,
00:06:34
Michael
as I mentioned. I mean, they conceded four that day. So clearly, you know, it wasn't as good as what some might have thought. But I'd seen it a bit in the game they had against Bournemouth.
00:06:45
Michael
I believe they tried it for ah a more, not the full game, but for a period against Aston Villa as well, where they were the better team.
00:06:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm-hmm.
00:06:54
Michael
So it was something where we've started to see it a little bit more. um The fact that Eddie Howe expected him to go five at the back, And let's be honest, we know that he did because it ended up with Ramsdale pretending he was injured and us going through the process. I guess that was because he maybe only thought that Man United had...
00:07:18
Michael
five defenders, three midfielders and two attackers, and they were going to play that way. um But Dogu on that right-hand side probably had the game of the match. I think that in a large part is down to Amorim getting it right, um which is really weird to say, considering he rarely tinkers with things. But I actually thought we...
00:07:43
Michael
We changed our tactics to nullify them quite well, ah thought, but it came to the point of Newcastle doing too much to nullify Man United and not trying to do enough to beat Man United, felt like in that first half, if that makes sense.
00:07:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
I thought so too.
00:07:59
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, I think it does make sense. It does make sense, particularly because Dawg, who was so much higher, i think that pulled Gordon back so much deeper. And how many times have we said that Anthony Gordon should be playing 20 yards further up the pitch?
00:08:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
and You could see from his heat map in the first half, that he stayed on the left, but he was he was picking the ball up at his own half a lot of the time. And he didn't seem in the mood to go running past full-backs until he had to in the last 15 minutes.
00:08:14
Michael
Yeah.
00:08:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
um So it sort of, yeah, well, I think we nullified them by ending up with him in midfield to make us have the fall in midfield. But then that made Valdemar the old failings isolated, isolated,
00:08:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
Murphy as well. My goodness me, he must have had a ticket because he was a passenger at the whole of that first half, I thought.
00:08:52
Michael
Yeah. Terrible.
00:08:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
I know he put one or two good crosses in, but honestly, what is that? Five good seconds and the other 44 and a half minutes were poor. But Alanga was injured. There wasn't anybody else to play down the right unless Barnes had come on.
00:09:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
I don't know. i just think we we wrestled back. The initiative, I think, after they took the lead and we we didn't really create that much. um I think there was three shots each in the first half and one of theirs went in.
00:09:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I tell you what, I'll play Ken and we can talk

Dominance without Impact: Breaking Down Manchester United

00:09:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
about the second half. okay
00:09:32
Michael
That sounds good.
00:09:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
well I'm so disappointed, can you tell? And i got an extra bonus special Christmas present a day late because my lovely new black and white jumper which I needed in Inverness, by the way, because it was minus four.
00:09:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
But I've ruined it. This is meant to be what I can wear in all these home games coming up in January to stay warm. And the first match I watched in it was that abject performance. Anyway, here's Ken.
00:10:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we're back for part two.
00:10:39
Michael
Mm-hmm.
00:10:39
Global Sports Podcast Network
The second half. Oh, Michael. Michael, Michael, Michael. That second half, at by the end of it, or by 75 minutes, I'm thinking, this is just what we did to Arsenal in the semi-final.
00:10:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
And we thought that was brilliant. we just gave We just gave the ball to them and said, look, we're going to defend here. And we don't think you've got it in you to get past us. And they didn't have. And we thought that was great. But Man United did it to us.
00:11:10
Global Sports Podcast Network
have Just off the top my head, 46 crosses in the game. You told me seven of those were successful. They weren't successful enough for us to conjure a header or a shot on target. That had to be saved.
00:11:26
Michael
Yeah.
00:11:27
Global Sports Podcast Network
What is going on? I mean, yeah, we dominated the ball. I think we had seventy odd percent damage. to set possession manchester and i didn't really look that interested in getting out of their own half uh that said i think diallo should have scored and then sesca whacked the bar as well so they could have gone three up um but we just look absolutely clueless once we get up to the edge of the opposition box um no guile no creativity
00:11:34
Michael
Yeah.
00:11:45
Michael
Yeah, 100%. Could have been a lot worse.
00:11:58
Global Sports Podcast Network
Nobody with a single bit of inspiration, although they're flattered to deceive, all the time I'm thinking it's coming, it's coming, another the corner. um i
00:12:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
i don't know what I don't know what to comment on it because it's just so poor. And and the thing is that when we we took the piss out of Arsenal with our great Bachman and Byrne in defence,
00:12:08
Michael
you
00:12:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
they kept taking their senior players off and bringing kids in. I'm sure one of the program sellers came on for the last five minutes and we still couldn't get past them.
00:12:32
Michael
ah
00:12:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
one
00:12:35
Michael
Yeah, it's it it says a lot when Tyrell Malassia goes missing for a year and a half and then he's trusted to come on against Newcastle United.
00:12:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
What do we have to do?
00:12:44
Michael
You could tell Ruben Armourim knew Newcastle United weren't going to do anything. And to be honest, throughout entirely that second half, it might have been played in Man United's final third for the most part.
00:12:55
Michael
But there was no, as you say, there was no creativity there. There was no risks being taken at all. And I think that's a large problem with Newcastle this season. We're not really taking any risks.
00:13:07
Michael
think from the top of my head, the only player that really took a ah pot shot and tried to, you know, just make something happen was Lewis Hall when he hits the ball.
00:13:18
Michael
um I think there's a couple occasions where Gordon should probably score. Joe Lytton apparently has two shots on target.
00:13:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mm.
00:13:26
Michael
I remember one being a P-roller and that was it. But, I think for Newcastle, you're looking at it now and going, you need someone who's just happy to take the game by the scruff of the neck and try and create something. Because realistically, Bruno did nothing um except from the the shot in the first half. I thought he tried a lot more than what a lot of players did, which i can I can always say I'm okay with your performance if I can see you putting the effort in. um right I thought taking Ramsey off was a
00:13:58
Michael
I would have done it, but I would have done it for Wissett and played Volta Marder and Wissett together because that was what I felt it was crying out for. But I thought Ramsey was giving us a lot of energy in midfield that we weren't getting from Tonali and Bruno.
00:14:13
Michael
um won more tackles in the first half than any other player on the pitch. It's one thing I remember seeing this morning. And I remember up until the part where he just, but other than the part where Ramsey just falls on the floor when he can get a shot away, trips over his own foot, you're thinking, he's not actually had a bad game, but it's one of those where you're looking around the rest of the pitch and you're thinking,
00:14:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:14:38
Michael
Well, is someone going to do something? You mentioned earlier, Gordon wasn't willing to take players on until ah the last, what, 20 minutes. He attempted five dribbles in the game, failed with ah three of them miserably, if I remember correctly. Valtomar tried four dribbles, failed on every single one of them.
00:14:56
Michael
Lewis Hall somehow had seven um where he got through, but I remember numerous times during the game, him just picking the ball up in his own half and running with it. um So credit to him.
00:15:07
Michael
But you're sitting there and going, where on earth is this creativity? Because the little triangles that used to get the likes of Miggie Almiron in behind, just they are there, but they're going towards the corner flag now instead of the six-yard box.
00:15:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
All right.
00:15:24
Michael
Yeah. So I really don't know what what we're going to do. i think we're not taking enough risks. And I think that was the centrepiece of you know what we saw at Man Utd. Because I don't think I've seen us break a team down this season.
00:15:41
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, I mean, we have scored, but we don't score away from home. and I remember the first three games of the season, we drew 0-0 when we played away from home.
00:15:51
Michael
Yeah.
00:15:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
And let's be honest, without a very freak own goal, it would have been 0-0 at Sunderland. And without with Pope and goal, this one would have been 0-0 as well. So, i yeah, it's taking a risk.
00:16:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
boed Barnes, s sorry, Hall having a shot that hit the bar, Fair play. and I mean, he nearly got ah he nearly got a rebound, which we hit really well. And I think it hit somebody in the face and knocked them over and they stopped the game.
00:16:19
Michael
yeah heaven
00:16:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
um But this is what we're missing. Fab Shaw's got a great shot on him He never tried once. and I've seen Lewis Miley score a blinder against Bromley, and he's in the position to come step forward and just put his laces through it. Make the goalkeeper make some saves.
00:16:37
Michael
heaven yeah
00:16:37
Global Sports Podcast Network
And if there's 10 defenders in front of you, like Joe, like, sha did have a shot that bounced off somebody's standing leg and went the wrong side of the post. At least, at least there's a chance. There isn't a chance if we're passing the horseshoe around and round and round and back. I know we've got to keep possession. It's controlling the game and that's a good thing.
00:17:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
But it stops being a good thing when we've got so much control that we're deciding not to break the lines and try and shoot. We've It's not hard, is it? People score from 30 yards every week.
00:17:16
Global Sports Podcast Network
We don't try. We don't try to shoot from outside the box. That might be a chance that Eddie Howe could let on. I mean, you know, it was so bad that when Willock came on for Tonali, he really lifted things.
00:17:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
He injected a little bit of urgency.
00:17:33
Michael
Mm-hmm.
00:17:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
can remember one ball which was clipped over, which he got onto and and and had a shot. I think i don't think it was on target. I think it was and ended up being a cross that nobody could get on the end of it, but at least he'd got in behind and had and had a shot.
00:17:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
m but Joe Willock, let's be honest, you know, in everybody's book, he's marked down that he's going to Crystal Palace to give us some spending money to bring what? Another winger that doesn't know how to be a fullback in probably. Um,
00:18:04
Global Sports Podcast Network
It shouldn't be a down to Joe Willock to come on and actually inject a little bit of ingenuity into the attack. Not when we've spent this much money. And then we're all on there. 69 million on Voltamada, 55 million on Visser.
00:18:19
Michael
Couldn't do anything.
00:18:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
and And we couldn't get a shot on target. and i mean, it was abject, wasn't it? And and the know the biggest fool is me, because I've spent nearly 300 pounds on Tickets for Crystal Palace, Leeds, PSV, Bournemouth.
00:18:36
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'm going to sit and watch the idiots four times in the next three weeks.
00:18:37
Michael
Hey, it's at home. We're always okay at home. ah
00:18:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
why could that How can that be any different? Is that really the power of the crowd? Is that the 12th man that we need?
00:18:51
Michael
It's mentality.
00:18:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
That we need 50,000 screaming Geordies to make them take it?
00:18:54
Michael
of
00:18:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
because they would Because they don't want to hear from the crowd, get forward, you idiot. a thousand times when they decide to put their foot on it and come back and knock it back to Fab Shah.
00:19:09
Global Sports Podcast Network
Fab Shah, it's pedestrian bringing it out. I mean, I know he's looking to play his killer ball and everything, and occasionally he does, but more often he'll knock it square to Malik Chow, who'll knock it to the full-back, who'll knock it back to him, who'll give it to Ramsey, who'll give it to Shah, who might put it to the left-back, who'll give it back to Shah.
00:19:19
Michael
Yeah.
00:19:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've got to break the lines. We've got to get the opposition half. We just don't. I don't really want to watch a team that is controlling the ball in their own half.
00:19:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
I'd choose Man City to watch if that's who I wanted to see. Barcelona. And we ain't Man City or Barcelona. Michael, I'm just so disappointed to discuss this rationally.
00:19:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
We were far better than we were against Sunderland. But we were still dreadful.
00:19:56
Michael
Yeah, would agree. Yeah, we're still dreadful, but yeah, I would agree

Addressing Tactical Failures

00:20:00
Michael
with that. I think it's it's one of those where there has been a clear shift in identity for Newcastle, I think, this year.
00:20:07
Michael
i I think when I was look when id look back on previous years, I think of the aggression in defence And I think of getting mainly getting in behind um when it comes to attacking, sort of the early balls in behind. I remember the Spurs game. They couldn't handle Azak getting in behind, whether it was Gordon getting in behind in Champions League games, Harvey Barnes doing it against Benfica.
00:20:31
Michael
I'm thinking there's times this season where we've done that. And that these those are the games where we've done the best this season. But if you look at the stats this year for Newcastle, We're second lowest for tackles made, fourth bottom for tackles attempted.
00:20:46
Michael
We've got the the least amount of offsides in the league, which is always a good thing. I don't want to remember Papacise being offside seven times a game.
00:20:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:20:55
Michael
But you sit there and you think, what made Newcastle brilliant under Eddie Howe, we now don't have. So it's one of those where... and obviously this is going into something maybe we'll talk about ah over the next week, but there's something that needs to change, and it's either going to have to be the playing though ah of the play in style, the tactic itself to allow for a number 10 such as Volta Marder to try and control the game, or we're going to have to spend even more money to bring in that kind of player, because I like Johan Wissler,
00:21:31
Michael
but he doesn't exactly look like the kind of player who's got a bit of burst and speed to get him behind. I'm not sure if that's the recent injury. i didn't see enough of him really at Brentford. Saw a couple of games against us, but he was running past Dan Byrne.
00:21:45
Michael
So I can't really judge pace off that.
00:21:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
Thank you.
00:21:48
Michael
um So for me, it's it's it's one of those where I know I'm a bit of a a world right now where everything's uncertain, but the next month...
00:22:00
Michael
could be one of the biggest months in Newcastle's recent history. And that's including the month of the cup final, because you've got January. We could be in real, real trouble, not just because of PSR, not making the Champions League, et cetera.
00:22:18
Michael
But if we don't back how, I'm not a hundred percent sure he's there this time next season.
00:22:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
Well, yeah, I mean, and that's the first time I'm starting to think, has he taken us as far as he can? Has Eddie Howe's intensity not no longer being our identity because Steve Bunter's making sure no one gets injured?
00:22:41
Michael
Yeah.
00:22:42
Global Sports Podcast Network
Taking something away from our team, which means that, I mean, I can't remember where I saw it. It must have been after the game, was it? That Newcastle's away record is the second worst in the Premier League.
00:22:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
other than Wolves.
00:22:56
Michael
Yeah.
00:22:56
Global Sports Podcast Network
We've scored seven goals.
00:22:56
Michael
Well, lucky we've probably got the worst Premier League team in history who are slightly worse than us.
00:23:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
but it it Well, you know, if the confidence that they're clearly completely bereft of away from home deserts us when we're playing at home, we've got all those big teams at the top to play away. So there's nothing coming from that.
00:23:19
Michael
Oh yeah, note.
00:23:19

And I notice that if, as I hope, Leeds pick up three points against Sunderland tomorrow, they're a point behind us. I don't know, as I sit here tonight, I've i've got Leeds down as player is fighting a relegation battle at the moment.
00:23:30
Michael
Yeah.
00:23:36
Michael
Agreed, Sam?
00:23:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
And they're a point behind us if they beat Sunderland. So we aren't far off that. I mean, surely our players are too good for that.
00:23:44
Michael
Yeah.
00:23:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
and the And St. James's Park is enough of a fortress for that not to happen. But I sat and watched us lose six games at home last week to last year to Fulham and Bournemouth and Brighton and West Ham.
00:23:58
Michael
Yeah.
00:24:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
Oh, my God. if it If it clicks, it just doesn't, you know.
00:24:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
Are we just a cup team? But we still have to have an away game to be a cup team. um I don't know. I don't think you can pin your season on hoping to beat Man City in the semi-final or...
00:24:18
Michael
No.
00:24:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
what what
00:24:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
Beat PSG in the first leg of a game four one at home. I hope that gets you through the Champions League.
00:24:26
Michael
Only you lose formula weight.
00:24:29
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, with the the bread and butter is the Premier League. This is where we're qualifying for Europe, apparently.
00:24:33
Michael
Yeah.
00:24:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, it is still tight. We're still just six points off Chelsea, who was in fifth place. There's time, and the league is so congested. I don't think the top three are, because the top three are seven points ahead of Chelsea.
00:24:48
Global Sports Podcast Network
and But yeah, it's it's not the season that I thought it was going to be anyway.
00:24:55
Michael
No, I thought we might struggle at the start of it, but then i'll be honest, when I saw the the fixtures at the start of the season, I was saying if we weren't in the top four by the end of the year, it was probably a failure because we had a pretty friendly match.
00:25:11
Michael
end of the year, in reality, you know, you were looking at Chelsea at home and thinking, yeah, that's winnable. I mean, you've mentioned that we've still got all of the top six, except for Man United to play away now. um And it's one of those where you were, I was looking at and thinking this could be the season we get Champions League again while being in the Champions League. And it's not come to fruition. and there ist There are a number of reasons for that.
00:25:38
Michael
And I think, It is something that could be fixed. I think this next month is the best time to fix it. You mentioned some of the fixtures there. um Add on to that.
00:25:49
Michael
Burnley away. ah Coming up next... You mentioned Crystal Palace, Leeds, Bournemouth, PSV, tramp massive in the Champions League.
00:25:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
moves away.
00:25:59
Michael
We've got Wolves away as well. If you're going to fix it, January is the month to do so. um So that is the only positive I can really take from this at the moment.
00:26:11
Michael
And I just hope... someone tries to change something because it hasn't worked. I don't want any how to go, whether it's any how changes this the tactical style, we bring in a player,
00:26:26
Michael
He's not, left I'm not going to say anyone as good as, but a bit like a Cherky from Manchester City, a bit of a maverick who can change a game like he did today. and Basically won them the game today against Nottingham Forest. He was absolutely

The Need for a Creative Player

00:26:40
Michael
excellent.
00:26:41
Michael
um A player like that that can turn a game on its head, instantly pushes defences little bit further back, makes them panic and make causes mistakes. And we don't have that because if you're a defender,
00:26:55
Michael
Do you fear Anthony Gordon? No. Do you fear Harvey Barnes? Aye, if he cuts in, but just put him ah just send him the byline and you're fine. Do you fear Anthony Lange?
00:27:06
Michael
No. Do you fear gi Jacob Murphy? If you've got a competent centre-back, you haven't. So it's it is really, really worrying, um but it is fixable.
00:27:18
Michael
And that is what I am clinging to.
00:27:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yes.
00:27:21
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's fixable. Bring back Maxi. That's the sort of player we need. We need a maverick like that.
00:27:26
Michael
Bring back Steve
00:27:30
Global Sports Podcast Network
Maxi, I think he's playing in Turkey now. He might not even have a...
00:27:34
Michael
Mexico now.
00:27:34
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is he? is he
00:27:36
Michael
Yeah, got um he had a falling out of Jose Mourinho. They kind of got back. ah They became friends again. And then Mourinho basically said, I don't want you. Now he's at Club America, I think it is, in Mexico.
00:27:55
Global Sports Podcast Network
My God.
00:27:57
Michael
How the mighty have fallen.
00:27:57
Global Sports Podcast Network
A team called Club America sounds like he's going to be playing with SpongeBob and I'll leave you with trying to work out which previous members of Newcastle squad in my head are SpongeBob and Goofy.
00:28:02
Michael
He probably is.
00:28:14

00:28:29
Michael
All right.
00:28:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
and You're right. You're reminding me that it's not just bloody Leeds and PSV. And I've got i've got tickets for Crystal Palace unexpectedly over the weekend as well.
00:28:47
Global Sports Podcast Network
So, yeah, there's an of four i've four or five games in January.
00:28:47

00:28:53
Global Sports Podcast Network
