Manchester United's Dramatic Win Against Burnley

00:00:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hello everyone, welcome back to the daily Manchester United coming to you soon after full-time whistle has gone at Old Trafford and it is our first, not only three points of the season, but our first win of the competitive season as well. Started off with a Josh Cullen-owned goal, so still at that point no Manchester United player had scored in the Premier League until Mbremo came along and got a quick, well,
00:00:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
Equal, I guess, a goal to put us ahead after Lyle Foster pulled Burnley level. And then we had Jadon Anthony pulling it back again to 2-2 on the 67th minute, 66th minute of the game, before it all went a little bit pear-shaped because Jadon Anthony committed the foul against Fernandes to give us the penalty. Fernandes...
00:01:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
takes it, converts it and it gets us a first three points in a game that had pretty much everything in it, including a lot

Game Highlights and Set Piece Analysis

00:01:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
of drama. My name's Kieran. Alongside me is Tom on this review episode. Tom, we sort of had to listen to this game rather than watch it, but you've had a look back at the highlights as well.
00:01:18
Global Sports Podcast Network
What did you make of what you've seen in front of you?
00:01:21
Tom Cairns
Well, um it didn't surprise me to see Burnley take the fight to United there because they knew there was going to be some weaknesses and some gaps in that back line. And the set pieces, I think, were what let you United it down again. I mean, correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the first Burnley goal...
00:01:37
Tom Cairns
came from a set piece, which, um well, not from a set piece because it it was whipped in from the right-hand side. And then, who was it again that got the first equaliser? Just remind me again.
00:01:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
It was Lyle Foster who got the equalizer.
00:01:50
Tom Cairns
Lyle Foster, that was it. Yeah, because he got into the six-yard box completely unmarked and it was just easy for him to just get the shot away, pass by India. So I was really annoyed with that one. And the second one was just equally as bad.
00:02:03
Tom Cairns
It was just a for very scrappy goal that Burnley got out of it where, I it was blocked or saved initially by by India, and it just came into the path of Jadon Anthony to get the second equaliser.
00:02:14
Tom Cairns
And then it it just almost looked like it was going up being another draw for United until Ahmed got brought down in the penalty area by Jadon Anthony, of all people, which I thought was a penalty. It was a shirt pull from behind.
00:02:27
Tom Cairns
I'm just amazed it took that long for the referee to decide on it, really. And this is what needs to be clumped down on is the amount of time wasted over such decisions like that. It's important to get it right, but we need to do it more efficiently without wasting so much time.
00:02:43
Tom Cairns
Especially when you've got fans turning up to the game and they've got trouble to go and catch after.
00:02:50
Tom Cairns
yeah
00:02:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:02:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, um you also had about 15 minutes in, you had Mason Mount and Carl Walker going for the same ball in the box. A judge that Carl Walker had fouled Mason Mount to begin with, although VAR intervened and said no foul.
00:03:06
Global Sports Podcast Network
So that was overturned. I mean, kind of look at, I've looked at pictures of that moment and I haven't seen the video of it, um but Going by what they what we've heard, commentary on BBC5 Live sort of said it probably wasn't a penalty and it was the right decision to overturn it. So we'll go with that for now.
00:03:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
But all in all, Tom, how happy are you that we finally got three points on the board?

United's Performance: Mixed Feelings and Penalty Drama

00:03:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Does this performance you know put any you know shining light on what's been a dismal week?
00:03:38
Tom Cairns
It does a little, but I ah still feel quite mad over how hard we had to work to get that win. We got quite lucky with the penalty shout. I think it was a penalty, but that could have been given the other way.
00:03:55
Tom Cairns
For the one that was not given, which we thought was going to be a penalty to begin with when Kyle Walker tangled with... Who was it?
00:04:03
Tom Cairns
they
00:04:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Mason Mount.
00:04:03
Global Sports Podcast Network
Hmm.
00:04:04
Tom Cairns
mountainson Mason Mount, wasn't it? Yeah. I thought that was a pen. To be honest with you, I really thought that was a pen, although maybe it should have been given as a foul.
00:04:16
Tom Cairns
But the referee thought that Mount went down a little too easily. But it's the shirt pulling. That's what gets me. Because there was a little bit of this, that and the other. But if Walker has got his hand on Walker's shirt of Mount's shirt to begin with, that for me is what should have been given the foul for a free kick.
00:04:38
Tom Cairns
So, it I don't know. it's just It feels like a messy, messy way of refereeing a match, but it was equally as messy as the way Man United went about winning the match.
00:04:51
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it it wasn't a great game to listen to, I'll be honest with you. um It sounded like we were making chances, though, but a little bit of bad news in the match it's just after half-hour mark, an enforced change from Matthias Cunha having to come off Joshua Zerksi coming on. um We'll have more details, hopefully, of that injury as we get forward, as we progress further forward. Hopefully, it's not a serious one.
00:05:12
Global Sports Podcast Network
But yeah, Zerksi coming on for Cunha.

Player Roles and Injury Concerns

00:05:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, Zerksi... yeah Playing as a sort of deeper role, if you like, or, you know, within that triangle, because Seshko didn't start start once again under Amerim.
00:05:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
But again, i thought he was, you know, getting into some good positions, so didn't score today. But I thought, you know, it doesn't quite have the pace that Cunha has. But certainly we've seen earlier on...
00:05:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
this season and even last season. You drop Xerxes down a little bit deeper. It's a different style of play. He holds up the play, tries to bring others into the into the game and into the attacks. I thought, from what it sounded like, he he did all right. But all right in a game against Burnley is cutting it fine, isn't it? Especially when everyone needs to be firing on all cylinders.
00:06:00
Tom Cairns
Yeah, and it was good to see him back because i think that's his first Premier League appearance this season since he got injured at Newcastle, the back end of last. And United needed Xerxes, especially for that Europa League final against Tottenham, which we lost.
00:06:14
Tom Cairns
So I'm happy he's got on he came onto the pitch and actually made a contribution, but it was very bad to see Cunha go off. I don't know what injury it was. Did you pick up on what kind of injury it was?
00:06:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Might have been something to do with his knee, which, you know, a knee injury is never nice sounding thing, but we will obviously keep up to date and bring you the news as soon as we're able to get it to you.
00:06:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
um Yeah. So if it's a knee injury, then normally that's not that's not a great bit of news to receive, but we'll confirm that once the United Medical staff confirm that to to the press.
00:06:50
Tom Cairns
Well, let's just hope it's a ah quick recovery for Cunha. At least we know he's not going to be involved in Brazil's matches during the international break. But don't expect him to be back in time for the game against City. I think that's a stretch too far.
00:07:04
Tom Cairns
So just

Mbemo's Impact and Scoring Achievements

00:07:05
Tom Cairns
to see, hopefully it's just a ah few weeks on the sidelines really for Cunha. um One player that's worth mentioning, which I've seen Full Time Devils, um or tweet, I should say Stratford Paddock had tweeted,
00:07:18
Tom Cairns
is that Brian Mbomo, in terms of his contribution, obviously he got one of the goals. Two out of three shots on target, five key passes included, one big chance created, four out of five accurate crosses in that match.
00:07:32
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:07:32
Tom Cairns
ah Another impressive performance from Mbomo, don't you think?
00:07:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
Absolutely. I mean, i said, you know, he's going to kick off and bounce back. you know, he's a professional and he'll move on from Grimsby. And what happened there? And he did just that, you know, getting a goal there and, you know, really trying to settle those nerves, especially, you know, so quickly after ah Lyle Foster gets an equaliser for Burnley and Burma just goes straight off the other end and gets goal to put us further ahead.
00:08:00
Global Sports Podcast Network
And that is United's first goal scorer in the Premier League this season. ah with two own goals before it. And Bermot is actually the first off the mark for United in the Premier League with Bruno Fernandes scoring from the spot.
00:08:14
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, it took an age to get to the decision. It then took seemed to take an age for the penalty to actually be taken. But once it was taken, it was it was ah it was a sigh of relief.
00:08:25
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think I'm going to go with that. I think.
00:08:28
Tom Cairns
It was a massive sigh of relief. Had we gone into the international break drawing that or you've all losing it, it would have really, really made it more nervy going into the international break before going to the Etihad when we come back from the break. So we we needed that win really um against the Burnley side who are expected to be one of those staving off relegation this season, I expect. Considering today as well that Sunderland got a win.
00:08:55
Tom Cairns
And just as we speak, Leeds are playing Newcastle. So you never know how that is going to play out.
00:09:01
Global Sports Podcast Network
But at the moment, at the time of recording, with that Leeds game still going on, we're into the top 10. Bite your fingernails if you've got any left. This could be an interesting season. We'll talk more about the match as well when we come back after this short break.

Kobi Mainu's Loan Request and Squad Depth

00:10:20
Global Sports Podcast Network
It's fair to say a big talking point since we yeah we last appeared on an episode together. so It was moments after we had essentially finished up recording and and I said, Kobi Mainu will probably be on the bench. This is you know bringing him off the bench. It'll be his chance to...
00:10:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
to sort of prove to everybody, you know, he didn't have the greatest game at Grimsby. ah So this was a time for him to bounce back. i I kid you not, moments after I had, you know, finished it up and, you know, got all the podcast scheduled for the next day, i sat down and I read that Kobi Mainu had requested to leave the club on loan.
00:10:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
And then Manchester United rejected that request, saying they have no intention of him leaving the club either on loan or permanently. It's another step in this saga at the moment. And I know our Sam is absolutely fuming about the whole ordeal.
00:11:10
Tom Cairns
Well, if United are that determined to keep hold of him to ensure that they are going to be playing him a lot, it goes back to us saying, can't remember if said it on air or off air, there's going to be injuries and suspensions along the way, and Cunha's today is an example of it.
00:11:24
Tom Cairns
So that's going to leave a gap in that area of the pitch where Fernandes is probably going to need to play in that 10 role so that they use an open space in the central midfield where you've got Casemiro, Ugarte and Mainu who are going to be playing in those positions. Maybe Mourat as well if he could.
00:11:40
Tom Cairns
But that leaves a door open for Maynud to come in and make more of a contribution to the side. Whether he starts or whether comes off the bench, like today, he's got a chance to make a name for himself.
00:11:52
Global Sports Podcast Network
So is that the case then? You reckon Fernandes will be pushed further up the field to sort of replace Cunha and then possibly mainly brought in to sort of fill in that role that Fernandes is leaving in the in the middle of the park, deeper deeper in the

Midfield Strategy and Player Placement Concerns

00:12:05
Global Sports Podcast Network
midfield?
00:12:05
Tom Cairns
I would say so. If he starts in Cesc, which he will do soon at some point, I'd reckon Fernandes will start alongside Inbermo. And Mount will drop to the bench because I think he's reliable when he comes off the bench, his Mount, which he was an example of that in the League Cup game in the week.
00:12:22
Tom Cairns
And that way you have Maino starting alongside either Casemiro or Ugarte.
00:12:23
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:12:27
Tom Cairns
But Maino and Ugarte being that duo in the middle of the park, It just doesn't really sit too well with me. You better off going with Mainou and Casemiro. But this is the issue, Kieran. In that area of the pitch, we've got Mainou, who almost looked like he was going to leave, but United have said no to it.
00:12:46
Tom Cairns
You've got Casemiro, who's coming towards the end of his time, within the top five leagues. And you've got Ugarte, who right now is basically down-tooling, if that's the right word.
00:13:01
Tom Cairns
So that leaves United needing a midfielder, a central midfielder.
00:13:07
Tom Cairns
And Balaba, you know, that couldn't happen soon enough, really.
00:13:07
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah.
00:13:10
Tom Cairns
Obviously, they couldn't get him this time around, but you can see why United needed him.
00:13:15
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, absolutely. And we've got the transfer window that closes on the 1st. I believe it's something like 8 o'clock, isn't it? And then it doesn't actually close at that time because clubs can get extensions. So the whole point of having a cutoff seems a bit pointless. But anyway, that's by the by.

Defensive Adaptability and Strategies

00:13:31
Global Sports Podcast Network
That's an entirely different episode in its entirety.
00:13:33
Global Sports Podcast Network
You did mention about Sesko as well, again, coming off from the bench. a so You know, brought in, you're looking 70 million plus for Sesko and he's still on the bench.
00:13:46
Global Sports Podcast Network
Is that just a fitness concern?
00:13:50
Tom Cairns
It feels more like an understanding of the English game rather than fitness, if you ask me. Because I think his fitness is fine. It's just he needs to understand how Amren wants him to play when he's coming on.
00:14:02
Tom Cairns
And it's difficult for him right now, I think, to really adapt to the system over the course of 90 minutes where I think it's easy for him to understand it for like half an hour of the game. But there has to come a point where he needs to be starting these games.
00:14:16
Tom Cairns
He started in the week against... Grinsby, and he will he wasn't very good. I think it was a baptism of fire in terms of how the English game works in a cup match against lower league off opposition.
00:14:31
Tom Cairns
So he's kind of going in there, not really knowing what to expect. And he came into the match with this approach where his eyes were wide open. Like you're thinking, blimey, this is more fierce than i could have anticipated. And I think that was what Amarim had thought to his mind that Sesko was made off just coming off the bench and making that impact to make Burnley feel that they don't really know what to expect from him rather than the other way round.
00:15:02
Global Sports Podcast Network
And one more thing to mention as well is that Maserawi did make a a cameo towards the end of the match. About 10 minutes he got a run out at the end of the match coming on for Leni Yoro. Good to see him back in the side and I feel like we have missed him.
00:15:13
Global Sports Podcast Network
ah what We have for Maserawi.
00:15:17
Tom Cairns
I mean, I didn't see the fact that he came on, but it's good see him get some minutes in. And that's going to provide another option in centre-half, because I think what I noticed as well is that Dallow is playing the right centre-back role, pushing Ahmed into the right wing-back position, which is interesting, actually, because we don't normally see Diogo Dallow playing there.
00:15:37
Tom Cairns
A lot of last season, we were seeing Dallow playing in left wing-back, and he wasn't very good there. So he's only good on that right-hand side because he's right-footed, he's Dallow. So that provides the fact that both Luke Shaw and Diogo Delo, as much as they are fullbacks normally, can adapt into either a left central defensive role for Shaw and a right central back role for Delo.
00:16:02
Tom Cairns
What kind of assessment can you draw on Delo in that position, Kieran, from what you've picked up?
00:16:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think who it was difficult because the lineups show that he was actually on the left-hand side. But then, you know, I don't know if it's just a case of their rotating or what have you, the system coming into play. But, you know, Luke Shaw looked he was at left wing back for a while and also Dallow.
00:16:26
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, it was a little bit... Yeah, I'm not sure what to make of it, to be honest with you. i'm I'm more of the volition that Shaw's being tried as the left centre-back because, know... um where we I wouldn't say we were missing Dorgou today, but he was on the bench. He was unused

Revitalizing United's Offensive Play

00:16:40
Global Sports Podcast Network
substitute. So perhaps getting a rest ahead of the international break. but Yeah, it felt like down that left-hand side, it felt a little missing.
00:16:49
Global Sports Podcast Network
I mean, I might be a bit biased because I do like Dorgou. I think he's a really exciting player, you know, a wing-back who's just happy to go forward. Just almost, you know, doesn't have to do a lot of defending and just absolutely pushes forward. So, yeah, it's interesting to see how that system is working. um but I mean...
00:17:08
Global Sports Podcast Network
It wasn't the greatest display defensively again, ah you know, defending a free kick and also just a bit of a squabble in the box leading to another goal. It's the same old, same old. So we're back maybe with the conversation of goalkeepers, but we've talked about that a lot.
00:17:24
Global Sports Podcast Network
And I mean a lot. I think my United player of the match is probably going to be Umbermo. You know, an exciting player. Like I said, worried about the price tag, but the more the games go on,
00:17:38
Global Sports Podcast Network
the more I'm more relaxed about Bayern Umbermo. He's been a solid purchase and he's really changed how we're going forward. We've lacked goals. We've lacked you know that clinical nature going forward.
00:17:50
Global Sports Podcast Network
And Umbermo has shown that sort of putting on a clinic to the other players, which is great.
00:17:58
Tom Cairns
And I was happy with Mbomo over the course of the match. You know, good see him contribute and we needed that. If it was out in there and if it was Fernandes and Mount, maybe we could have got something out of it. But the fact that we had that option of having Mbomo play alongside Mount with Fernandes playing in that deeper role, it leaves United with a few options as to how they could go about switching Fernandes or switching Mount into a central midfield role. Because we know that Cunha and Mbomo are more like forwards.
00:18:23
Tom Cairns
So playing in the middle of the park is not is not their ideal position. I just want us to start finding an efficiency that works within this team that's going to ah get United the results that they need right now.

Upcoming Challenges: City and Chelsea

00:18:38
Tom Cairns
We've got two tough games when we come back from the break at the Etihad and at Old Trafford against Chelsea. We've got to try and get something from either of those games because I do not want us going into them and then losing both.
00:18:52
Tom Cairns
I think we end up losing both. It leaves the club in a rather more perilous situation. Because if we can't even try and beat either City or Chelsea, something's definitely wrong at the club.
00:19:07
Tom Cairns
And we've got two more games after that before the next international break, which I think are going to be must-win games because we've got Brentford away after that and Sunderland at home, which is also a three o'clock kick-off on Saturday
00:19:19
Global Sports Podcast Network
Yeah, we'll be listening into that one for sure. But yeah, it's, I don't know, we for some reason last season, we really turned up to the big games and the opening day against Arsenal, we played quite well. We just lacked the finishing touch.
00:19:35
Global Sports Podcast Network
I think when it comes to the big games, normally, more often than not, we have the players that do show up. So we shall see. We shall see on that one. But that will just about do it for our wrap-up of the game. It's three points on the board. And at the time of recording, at the very least, we're into the top 10. Wow.
00:19:54
Global Sports Podcast Network
wow What a week it's been. What of opening three games it's been. We're now heading into the international break. go Don't worry, we'll still be here at the Daily Manchester United bringing you all the content
