kati: Hi.
Kristine Zeller: Hi. Hello.
kati: Welcome, dearest people. to the tennis bakery.
Kristine Zeller: Hello.
kati: We are back. The US Open is still on. So we are there. We are going to chit chat about tennis. And this is a tennis fan podcast, by the way.
kati: So we are two people who are not. in um involved professionally in tennis, we also... Cannot play very good tennis, but we love watching tennis. And that's what we chat about here on this podcast. And we invite you to listen in on our conversations and us. That's me, Kati, and my dear friend, Christina.
Kristine Zeller: Hello.
kati: And now I have to be very frank with you up front. We have two big problems today.
Kristine Zeller: Federal.
kati: Yeah, I would say two. The first one is I have not watched any tennis since we last. recorded yesterday's podcast. Because I've been too busy. And as you know, I don't like getting spoilered. And the option isn't for me that then I just didn't watch any tennis during a Grand Slam. But I've been saving up, especially the night match that Sverre have had on the Centre Court and Arthur Ashe. which wasn't over yet when I woke up this morning. And this morning when I did my workout was the only time I would have had.
kati: To watch any tennis. um But it wasn't over yet, so I couldn't watch it. So I haven't watched. um not only that match but i haven't consumed anything about tennis because any consumption of anything about tennis would threaten to spoiler what happened in the match.
kati: So I have been on Instagram. I haven't opened a newspaper. I'm not even looking at my mailbox.
Kristine Zeller: And it's... It's 1 .25 when we record this.
kati: Yes, the next day. So I've been out about I've had business meetings, I've been doing all kinds of stuff. But I haven't like I've been cut off from the world in any way I can. So I can enjoy this match later on.
kati: um Which leads us to the second problem. The... Well, we don't have, but I have. Because after all this...
Kristine Zeller: Because you have the worst friend in the world.
kati: I have the worst friend of the world Because after all this... ridiculous stupid effort I put into not getting spoilers and if you've listened to any episodes of this podcast you know that it's something that I'm passionate about it's not something I take lightly I'm in a conversation five minutes ago.
kati: With my dear friend, Christina, who's with me on the podcast. And she spoilers the results of the match. Like straight out.
Kristine Zeller: And I really just tried not to spoil anything. The whole morning.
kati: You failed.
Kristine Zeller: I failed. I failed big time. and Maybe it helps at some point in the future when the pain is not strong anymore. that I feel really bad about it. I feel honest honestly, really, really, really bad about it.
Kristine Zeller: i'm so sorry i would have killed you if this would have been the other way around it it would have been I don't know, Carlos or someone.
kati: I mean, we... I already told you I have not forgiven you yet.
Kristine Zeller: No. I understand.
kati: But I know that I will.
Kristine Zeller: Needs time.
kati: I will forgive you.
Kristine Zeller: okay
kati: Um... So that's good. um
Kristine Zeller: but That's good.
kati: but that's good i will forgive you but i haven't yet because it still hurts and um i mean good thing you won if you'd spoil it the other way around it might feel even worse
Kristine Zeller: No.
kati: So like it maybe takes off the blow and we will know how big or small of a person I am by. If I take the opportunity to spoiler a Carlos.
Kristine Zeller: I think you are allowed.
kati: Just... Just...
Kristine Zeller: I think you've got one boy like you've got to spoil a -free card.
kati: It's...
kati: Yeah, but you know I would never do that.
Kristine Zeller: Yeah, but you you could, and you could...
kati: Because...
Kristine Zeller: Like we are.
kati: But I could. Well, that.
Kristine Zeller: I would maybe feel better actually after you did that.
kati: But now... ah But now from now on, I can always pat on my my myself on the back there and be like, I'm a bigger person because...
Kristine Zeller: yeah Yeah, that's right.
kati: I could do this. and You know what? I just don't. I just don't, even though I could, because I love her and I want her to have fun watching her matches. Not like she... you know, obviously doesn't like me.
Kristine Zeller: Of Oh God.
kati: And doesn't care about my feelings.
Kristine Zeller: Oh
kati: Yeah, so so these are the two problems we're faced with. i have Very little to give today in this podcast. and I'm in a potentially... Bad mood.
Kristine Zeller: Yeah.
kati: So, Christina.
Kristine Zeller: And so what we... What we decided to do is we start talking about...
kati: How was...
Kristine Zeller: some of the matches that i have seen but i have to see i have also not had so much time because the last two days like today and yesterday was uh was just crazy busy for us and so like I mean, all days are busy for us, but normally we have the time to have the laptop up next to us or an iPad, right? And watch and tennis next to whatever we're doing.
Kristine Zeller: But yesterday it was just really difficult. And today. and But I did manage to watch at least, I don't know, half an hour or something of the Koboli match. Yesterday.
Kristine Zeller: And he won So... That's good.
kati: That's good. Did he drink a beer again? Or did he mention the toilet in his...
Kristine Zeller: I don't know.
kati: after my interview.
Kristine Zeller: I will never talk about him drinking beers because I...
kati: Yeah.
Kristine Zeller: will always kind of get it wrong.
kati: but were where were Were toilets involved in any form?
Kristine Zeller: and I don't know. I didn't see his on -court interview, so I'm sure there were some toilets involved.
kati: Hmm. Hmm.
Kristine Zeller: But I think i so I've seen a thing that I have never seen any tennis player do before in that in that match. And I found this. Worthy of a mention.
Kristine Zeller: and that was And there was an incident where the other player went to change his kit, his outfit. Right. So that was a five. four or five minute break. And Kobaly did not leave the court. So he was sitting on the bench and waiting and waiting and waiting. And then he got bored.
Kristine Zeller: And then he got up.
kati: Of course, because he's like this little...
Kristine Zeller: And then... Yeah.
kati: puppy that needs to be entertained.
Kristine Zeller: Yeah. Yes. It's a bit like Carlos. And then he stood up and then he walked around on court and looked around and, you know, kind of waited and waited and waited. And then he went to one of the cameras, like because they are everywhere, like the cameras, right, on court.
Kristine Zeller: I don't know, maybe a hundred or even more cameras, but one of...
kati: No, there's not that many, but anyway, there's cameras.
Kristine Zeller: a lot a lot of cameras and one of them or like a few of them are extra big right so they are like
kati: Yeah.
Kristine Zeller: The main cameras or I don't know, whatever. And he just went to the camera and he just, I don't know, blew a kiss or something into the camera. Like, and winked. You know, it was like a...
Kristine Zeller: A little flirt with the camera. And I was like, he definitely did this on purpose to find it then again. on social media the next day because everybody is talking about him and how he's doing like funny things.
Kristine Zeller: And yes, that was actually the case. Social media, once you open it up again later on. um You will find Koboli.
kati: It's full of Kabbali blowing kisses.
Kristine Zeller: You will find Kvalli Blok is in the middle of a match, which I think is really... interesting and reminds me of something that I have seen with a match. A few days ago. And I can't recall actually which.
Kristine Zeller: match it was oh I have my notes here Oh, yeah. It was the Ayala -Stojana match. That was a first round match, I think. What was it I already sang?
Kristine Zeller: Hmm. I don't know which which round it was, but it was the Ayala -Stojana match. And there was a situation where the opponent, like Ayala's opponent, had the chance to break, to break serve of Ayala. And um she was like waiting for Ayala to kind of...
Kristine Zeller: Get to. her position so that he she could she could serve. and And she was waiting there and then she started joking around with her box. Right.
Kristine Zeller: So right before the opportunity for the break, the other one.
kati: Yeah, I love the other one.
Kristine Zeller: Like the the person with the break opportunity.
kati: The other lady.
Kristine Zeller: And she started to to really laugh with her box and something else. She giggled with her box and stuff. And the commentator went crazy about it because um he said, or was it a woman?
Kristine Zeller: I don't know. and Let's say it was a man because mostly it's men, the the commentators. and He said that that's not something that she should do. And this will cost her the break point because she's not focused.
kati: Oh that was definitely a man.
Kristine Zeller: ah And she was not focused. She's having fun with her box. She can't. you know kind of She can't win that anymore. and Yeah. I mean, she didn't get the break and so the commentator felt very...
Kristine Zeller: like assured in his position that this was the wrong thing and actually the joking with her box or like it wasn't really you're not kind of a joking it was just a smile or something like a bit of a bigger smile maybe with a box and he said that it's not focused that's not like in a mind space where she should be to to face this break.
Kristine Zeller: Break opportunity.
kati: And what do you think about that?
Kristine Zeller: And I think like with the Koboli match, that's why I'm. That's why I'm mentioning it. You know, he he did all of that and he still won the match. I think it is really like a bit of a more old fashioned.
Kristine Zeller: You know kind of I sometimes find that commentators or even like sports journalists or other people or even even fans. They are like. if tennis is not a certain way how it should be
kati: Yeah.
Kristine Zeller: then it is not not the correct tennis or...
kati: It's not 10 years. It's not the real tennis. Totally.
Kristine Zeller: it's not serious enough or it's not real or something.
kati: Mmm.
Kristine Zeller: And I just think there's different types of types of personalities. and And for some people, it really helps if they get like assured by their box with a friendly smile or or something. Or like in in the case of Koboli.
Kristine Zeller: like kissing the camera midway through the match. um And still this helps them. it It gives them positive energy and they can still um win the match. And I just thought, well, let them do whatever they want. And I really love it. it when Koboli kisses the camera.
kati: Yeah. I was thinking about something similar the other day when I was watching. parts of Carlos's match. And at one point, um this was the game, his second round match where he lost the first set.
kati: And then won the subsequent ones. and From the middle of the second set until the third there was a point where he won eight games in a row. So he was cruising. He was cruising and He was starting to do like his little grins and he did fancy balls and was like. like looking at his butt like, did you see that? Did you see me do that? Like, did you just see what I just did? He was doing his little like, where he's.
kati: pleased with himself.
Kristine Zeller: He's very proud.
kati: And he, and he.
Kristine Zeller: He feels himself.
kati: Yeah, he feels himself because he's. tried fancy stuff and it's worked and it's like o Look at that. Look at me. And then he lost a few. points in a row And I think. maybe he even got a break anyway it it turned He lost three points in a row. It was threatening a re -break or something. It was like things were not going well. And it was as if...
kati: Like, I think he felt like he'd been caught. In his face, it looked as if he was like... Oh whoops. Oh dear. Oh dear, now I've gone too far.
Kristine Zeller: Mmm.
kati: I've somehow let myself...
Kristine Zeller: He needed to pull himself back.
kati: drift off and he suddenly went like he it was like he he looked like someone had thrown a bucket of water over his head and was suddenly like like super serious and super like somber and even looked like a bit
Kristine Zeller: Hmm.
kati: ashamed mad i don't know it was this look of lot like
Kristine Zeller: Mm hmm. Mm hmm.
kati: Whoops.
Kristine Zeller: Mm hmm.
kati: Like, oh dear.
Kristine Zeller: I did something wrong.
kati: and I did something wrong or naughty me.
Kristine Zeller: Mm hmm.
kati: It's coming back to bite me now.
Kristine Zeller: Mm hmm.
kati: And I was thinking, yeah, that's, I mean, and it's always been a topic with Carlos, right? That he, um people say that he also had with his former. coach which he was super successful with Ferrer that he always wanted Carlos to be more locked in and more serious and more like take this damn seriously boy and he ah From the outside, it looks like he struggled with that a bit because he wants to do this playfulness and so on. But there's definitely something inside him where I think.
kati: he isn't so sure if he's allowed to do that or how much he's allowed to do it.
Kristine Zeller: Yeah. Yes.
kati: and If he does it and stuff starts going wrong, I think he really questions himself like, oh, was that because I was being too playful now, taking it too far?
Kristine Zeller: Mm -hmm Mm hmm.
kati: You know what I mean?
Kristine Zeller: yes Yes, totally. I think that's all the same. the same direction.
kati: o
Kristine Zeller: And I just think. Partly. Even you could say that the same story goes for Sabalenka. a bit in the other direction but it's a bit of the same thing she because Once she stopped.
Kristine Zeller: being her very emotional self and very explosive emotional self she also started struggling a bit in her tennis matches. right so she Try to be more.
Kristine Zeller: Like she tried to brush off the edges, you know, kind of she she tried to be more of this. perfect tennis player with all emotions under control and never saying something wrong and never being too angry or something.
Kristine Zeller: And. This kind of subdues also her her game. then i find it all
kati: It's interesting I don't perceive it like that at all with her.
Kristine Zeller: I do.
kati: I find that... She is at the moment
Kristine Zeller: Well, not anymore now in this in this tournament.
kati: Yeah.
Kristine Zeller: she's really She's starting well. But before that, right, she had these months of...
kati: No, no, not she's starting well. my My perception of her is that she has been... too like sensitive in the last tournaments. Like in her last match, it was the...
kati: Second game. The other person had started serving. The other person had won the first game. It was her serve. She was up 30 love or something. And then. She mishit.
kati: The Bull. For 40 Love. Right? So... Who cares? And she was like huffing and puffing and, ah. Rolling her eyes and being all like. p oh, this is terrible. And I was like, whoa, okay. She's really like.
kati: I feel like she's maybe too much. in her drama at the moment in like situations which do not merit having that much drama on court. Like I love the drama.
kati: ah But i was I was a bit worried about like how she's getting annoyed so quickly.
Kristine Zeller: Yeah, but I think it's just the... That's that's ah like very recently, right? And I think this is just the result of formally her trying to push all of this under the carpet and, you know, kind of behave.
kati: Hmm.
Kristine Zeller: friendly and normally and professionally and stuff and now it all breaks out of her and it also well did not help her game back then and it. Seems like this is now helping her, right? She seems to find a way now. But I just think that the more you try to change the personality of a player.
Kristine Zeller: the the more it could also... be hurting the game. And therefore, I think it's um it's beautiful that Kobaly does these things. I actually think...
Kristine Zeller: Also Sabalenka with her explosive personality. I think it's just beautiful to see the different personalities of the players. often on court and I mean of course they should not behave like rude to people and stuff.
Kristine Zeller: Right. But.
kati: Yeah, yeah.
Kristine Zeller: um Yeah. And even if they are sometimes like a bit rude, so maybe then apologize afterwards because it was the the middle in the heat of the game or something. Yeah. And I would rather see them behaving like their true selves. instead of being so perfect and polished. and
kati: Yeah, and i think taking I think you're right. And taking it back to what you said at the beginning, um there is no right or wrong way to do it.
Kristine Zeller: Yeah.
kati: Right, some people Are their true selves and behave like a stereotypical tennis player should. in parenthesis act and other people are their true selves and they don't and that's okay i think that's what you're trying to say right it doesn't mean there's there's not one right way or the other it's more about them finding out who they are
Kristine Zeller: Yeah. Yeah. Mm -mm.
Kristine Zeller: Yeah.
kati: And how best to manage to to let that flow into a tennis match. Yeah, I think that's one of the core competencies that their coaches need, right? to help them understand.
Kristine Zeller: Yeah.
kati: What is that for you?
Kristine Zeller: Hmm.
kati: What is the best way for you? Like for example, Djokovic. With his... ranting and he always gets into fights with like he'll pick out people in the crowd and start having arguments with them and it makes him better and he knows it makes him better so he he sometimes when he has like a lull he'll look for that conflict.
kati: He'll try and find that because he knows it's good for him because he knows that about himself. Does it make him? Like Roger, no. Roger wouldn't do that.
kati: And do therefore some people think it's not that great? Yes. but it's what he's understood what works for him
Kristine Zeller: Yes. Yes, totally.
kati: So.
Kristine Zeller: So we we want to see Koboli kissing the camera going forward and Carlos doing funny things as well. And all the other women players too. And speaking of women.
Kristine Zeller: I did also watch part of the Iga Sviontek. game but Not.
kati: Did she win?
Kristine Zeller: But not that much. Yes. And she won super easy. I don't have the results and in my head, but she won super easy.
kati: Hmm.
Kristine Zeller: It was just very like breathing lightly through through the match.
kati: Bagels and breadsticks.
Kristine Zeller: Sorry?
kati: Bagels and breadsticks?
Kristine Zeller: um I don't remember it could even be yeah but it was really it was really easy for her and um I just find for Iga, it's such a huge difference the way she enters the court and the way that she leaves the court.
Kristine Zeller: um once she's won. I just think she is always so, you you really feel the pressure and the nerves. And of course all players, or I guess most players have it once they enter the court. But for her always, the on -court interviews afterwards, she is like a... different person.
kati: Oh yeah?
Kristine Zeller: it's um Like she lights up and she's glowing and she was so relieved.
kati: Mm.
Kristine Zeller: And oh God, I always love, love it for her when she. when she has this feeling.
kati: That's cute.
Kristine Zeller: And...
kati: Mm hmm.
Kristine Zeller: She also um was wearing A kid, of course. the same kit she wore the other day, and from On is her sponsor. and And I found it interesting, that's for our little sponsorship logo batch conversation that we had a few days ago. So she does have other sponsors on her kit.
Kristine Zeller: So it's not only an on.
kati: Oh yeah.
Kristine Zeller: kit, but there's also Infosys and another friend.
kati: And you saying it now...
Kristine Zeller: on there.
kati: um Djokovic also always has other things on his. things than Lacoste.
Kristine Zeller: Does he?
kati: Yeah, he has that Amman thing.
Kristine Zeller: Oh, and the sleeves, right?
kati: that's often at the start yeah m
Kristine Zeller: Or something? No. True. So maybe it's just for Nike that they, because we had the discussion, right, that Nike does not allow other sponsors on their kit. But then sometimes for lower ranked players, they...
Kristine Zeller: They...
kati: Or maybe...
Kristine Zeller: Can do it.
kati: It's The Missing Sleeves.
Kristine Zeller: Hmm.
kati: It's like if you don't have sleeves, you're not allowed to have sponsors.
Kristine Zeller: Maybe. Yeah, but Iga did not have sleeves and she had sponsors, at least for one, right?
kati: ah I guess she found some.
Kristine Zeller: Yeah, so I don't know.
kati: Hmm.
Kristine Zeller: It was ah it was interesting.
kati: Hmm.
Kristine Zeller: It was interesting. So she had other sponsors on her kit. That's something that I wanted to mention. and Apart from that, actually the women. Like. I think all the women that I had in my prediction actually came through.
kati: They're coming through in general for you.
Kristine Zeller: Yes, I think.
kati: That's what women do.
Kristine Zeller: I think the women show up.
kati: Mm hmm.
Kristine Zeller: They do what they do best because they show up and they do what they should. And so Anissimova one, for example. and Osaka won.
Kristine Zeller: Um, um, Iala won. Eva Liz was kicked out. well Rebecca Nguyen.
kati: But she, who did she play? She played against this high -seeded person.
Kristine Zeller: Hmm. and Could be.
kati: Andreeva. She played against Andreeva. So. we're not surprised, then Andreeva won because...
Kristine Zeller: Did you play against it in Andreeva?
kati: and
Kristine Zeller: Yeah, could be.
kati: I'm not, so I mean, this is really difficult how. Yeah.
Kristine Zeller: No. It's impossible, basically.
kati: Hmm.
Kristine Zeller: Let me check with Andrea.
kati: I'm pretty sure it was.
Kristine Zeller: Yeah. Mm hmm. Yeah, it wasn't real.
kati: Okay, she lost that.
Kristine Zeller: Yeah.
kati: Shame.
Kristine Zeller: So she lost that. um On the other hand, good for Andriva, she won.
kati: Yes.
Kristine Zeller: So she delivered also.
kati: Okay. Yeah.
Kristine Zeller: And Coco Gauff won as well. against Paula Bedossa.
kati: Mm hmm.
Kristine Zeller: And... um I heard just from... from another um interview I heard that Badosa played really well. So it was a bit of a fight.
Kristine Zeller: So I did note that down.
kati: Yes, i did see some yeah i did so I did see some snippets of that while I was working out because that was available.
Kristine Zeller: Huh?
Kristine Zeller: Uh -huh. And what was your impression?
kati: And she... Yeah, no, she was playing really well. It should have been a...
Kristine Zeller: So I thought about maybe watching it back, but when? Not enough time.
kati: It was more like a, I would have thought that it, I think it would have been okay if that would have been a a three set match. In this case, it was I think in the end it was a two set. Win for...
kati: Go, go, go.
Kristine Zeller: and I think it was a three set win.
kati: Mm -mm.
Kristine Zeller: No?
kati: Well.
Kristine Zeller: Would it not?
kati: I... from the snippets that i saw i would have i think coco got it done in two
Kristine Zeller: Huh. Hmm.
kati: But you can look.
Kristine Zeller: Hmm.
kati: I can't. Well, I could not.
Kristine Zeller: Yes.
kati: No, I'm not gonna.
Kristine Zeller: No, no, no, you shouldn't look because then you know how it all turned out.
kati: I don't want to. I don't want to see the score line. I don't want to see anything.
Kristine Zeller: Let me check.
Kristine Zeller: o Why does it not show?
kati: well Anyway, we got... The men, were there any upsets with the men?
Kristine Zeller: um Oh yeah, you're right. It was two sets. The second set had a... Tie break.
kati: Ah yes.
Kristine Zeller: But it was two sets. Yeah, the men. so the men are disappointing me in general at least when it comes to my prediction because it all goes to shit Like completely.
Kristine Zeller: And because, and as you already know, Hoda was the one that I had in a semifinal even. He lost.
kati: Yesterday.
Kristine Zeller: Like really, really bad. He lost against um um a a lucky loser even.
kati: Mm -hmm
Kristine Zeller: Novak um went out in the first round. you know Then also I had Nakashima in the fourth round. He also lost.
kati: Mm hmm.
Kristine Zeller: And another upset is Ojeh Eliassime. He was the third seed. He was kicked out by Karin Haschanoff.
kati: Yes. Really? Oh, I mean, that's a hard that's a hard draw, but still.
Kristine Zeller: Yesterday or today. I don't know. That's yeah, it's. I mean. It's a third seed, right? And he has been playing really good recently. So... Yeah, there goes my prediction.
Kristine Zeller: Oh, God.
kati: And Feast was also out.
Kristine Zeller: Looks really bad.
kati: He was also...
Kristine Zeller: Fees was out.
kati: And out.
Kristine Zeller: Yeah. So just everything works against me here. and On another note, Mosetti is also out. I didn't have him in my in my fourth round, but he's also he was also kicked out.
Kristine Zeller: And more fees went out.
kati: Aww.
Kristine Zeller: against Tien. That's really sad.
kati: Well.
Kristine Zeller: But it's really good for Morpheus that he even went to the second round, I think.
kati: No.
kati: Yes, and Tiana's a cool dude.
Kristine Zeller: He's a really good player. And um I also wanted to mention on the men m Fritz.
kati: Yeah.
kati: Mm hmm.
Kristine Zeller: Tale of Fritz. He Open the bakery.
kati: Ooh. Good for Taylor.
Kristine Zeller: yes oh god he is really so strong right now ah i would I'm really wondering who would ever beat him. um he played a three in a three set swing he played the first set six zero second six one third six one 1 bagel, 2 breadsticks.
kati: Welcome to the bakery, Taylor.
Kristine Zeller: God.
kati: He's looking good He was single for a while.
Kristine Zeller: He's really strong.
kati: He's been working out. He's got his stuff together, got a new girl.
Kristine Zeller: caught Got a new sponsor. Dora?
kati: He's... Yeah, Ora, he's sleeping on his eight sleep. He's got it figured out. he's got
Kristine Zeller: Yeah. Things are going well for him.
kati: Things are going well for Taylor. Good for him.
Kristine Zeller: Good for him. He's on a roll.
kati: Good for Taylor. Who's he? uh Like. Who was he en route to meet?
Kristine Zeller: No idea.
kati: Can you look at your little tree?
Kristine Zeller: Can't look it up.
kati: You can see
Kristine Zeller: Yeah, but it's it's so small. The printing is so small on the left, so and I didn't follow the first rounds. I only started my predictions from the fourth round, so I can never read on the left.
kati: but isn't he in there isn't he in the fourth round i'm sure he's in your fourth round
Kristine Zeller: Yeah, yeah i Yeah yeah.
kati: Who did you have a meeting in the fourth round? That would be I think maybe potentially the first interesting clash for him
Kristine Zeller: Hold on.
Kristine Zeller: I have him in the fourth round meeting Koboli.
kati: Yes, that would be interesting.
Kristine Zeller: That would be interesting. And I have him winning over Kobali.
kati: There are no two players that are more different than Taylor Fritz and Koboli.
Kristine Zeller: it That's true.
kati: There you go. The most... like And I'm not talking only about their style of play.
Kristine Zeller: That's true.
kati: They are just...
Kristine Zeller: No.
kati: Complete.
Kristine Zeller: Yes.
kati: Opposites. What would they like? Do they have things to talk about? it's They're so different.
Kristine Zeller: That's... Just... Oh God, it's just so these different personality types. Yeah. Then I, um, in a, in a quarterfinal, I had Fritz meeting Augie Aliassime. It's not going to happen.
kati: That's not going to happen.
Kristine Zeller: I think it will be most likely Lerner Thien that he's going to meet in the quarterfinal. If he beats Koboli, which I think he does.
kati: I don't know who else Lana's going to see. And I don't know enough about learner to...
Kristine Zeller: I think that could be. And then Fritz would be in the semifinal.
kati: against Zverev, right? Or would he be meeting Zverev in the final?
Kristine Zeller: Depends on... Who's there with his plane? But yes.
kati: No, I mean, is it are they on the same side of the tree?
Kristine Zeller: He would be meeting Zverev.
kati: Yeah.
Kristine Zeller: He would be meeting Zverev if Zverev advances that far, yeah.
kati: ah in the And the semis. It... In the semis, yeah. Okay, so they're in the same half of the tree.
Kristine Zeller: Yes in the semis
kati: They're not meeting in the final, they'd be meeting in the semis.
Kristine Zeller: Yes. Mm -mm. And if he were to beat Zverev, then he would have to beat Carlos in the final.
kati: Obviously, because who else should be there?
Kristine Zeller: assume Assuming that... I mean, Carlos. I mean the only true opponent for Carlos who would kind of be a real threat for his um final appearance.
Kristine Zeller: Is I think Ben Shelton or.
kati: In your head.
Kristine Zeller: Or Daniel Medvedev. if he really continues playing that well. Hm. Interesting. I think that's interesting.
Kristine Zeller: Anyway. and Shall we quickly talk about... um The matches to watch for today and tomorrow.
kati: Yes. Like I said, I also do not know what's going on, so you tell me and I can take note.
Kristine Zeller: Yes, I have like my number one match for the women. is Sabalenka versus Rakimova. Because Rakimova was the one who kicked out Krejcikova.
Kristine Zeller: And we remember that Krichikova was the one. That was supposed to be a big trouble for Sabalenka once they would meet, but obviously they... They didn't meet because Rakimov kicked out Krejcikova.
kati: When are they playing?
Kristine Zeller: Um. I don't know I don't have it here.
kati: Okay.
Kristine Zeller: um So this is going to be my number one match for the women. But there's, oh God, it's just due to the fact that for the men, so many tops.
kati: Ah wait a minute. Before we carry on. k Christina is going to talk to you guys about the Sferov match in a second. So we will have comments on the Sferov match, just as I'm going to drop out.
Kristine Zeller: Yeah.
kati: So we're just going to review tomorrow.
Kristine Zeller: Yeah. Yes.
kati: Then I'm dropping out and then you'll get. The tea on the side of Christina about.
Kristine Zeller: Yep. Hmm. Spereth.
kati: The sphere of match.
Kristine Zeller: Right. Um, I just think due to the fact that for the men, so many top seats are out. It is just so, it feels like starstruck on the side of the women, right? Once you look up who's playing the next day, because there's all the big names are there.
kati: When's Kalitos playing?
Kristine Zeller: So...
Kristine Zeller: Kalitos is playing Wu.
kati: Yeah, but is he playing today or...?
Kristine Zeller: Yeah.
kati: tomorrow morning.
Kristine Zeller: Yeah. and no No, I don't know.
kati: Have we got too much time?
Kristine Zeller: I think it will be most likely a night session, right? But I i don't know. I don't have the times here. I didn't write them down.
kati: Okay. mm -hmm
Kristine Zeller: So but obviously this is like my number one match for the men. Because I cross. And...
kati: Svitolina should be coming up to her day as well now.
Kristine Zeller: It's Rebecca, Svitolina, Noskova, Mukova, Townsend, Pegula, Sabalenka, Kostjuk.
kati: Yeah girls, let's go.
Kristine Zeller: Just to name a few. And for the men, like the biggest seeds are Carlos, of course. Shelton. Tommy Paul against Bublik, I think that could also be a good match.
kati: Ooh, that's going to be fun.
Kristine Zeller: I think that could be a but good match. And another good match on the men's side could be Medvedev against Rinderknecht.
kati: I think they got through.
Kristine Zeller: Yeah, obviously. So he's playing against. Medvedev.
kati: Oh, those are both two uncomfortable players clashing together.
Kristine Zeller: So that could be that could be fun. But I just wanted to highlight the fact that Carlos' draw was really easy. Right, so he met three. People who...
Kristine Zeller: well the first one is a fuel and everybody said it would be difficult but then I thought. Hmm. It wasn't that difficult. And then now the the last. The last opponent wasn't difficult for him. And I think also the next one, Wu.
Kristine Zeller: will not be a huge problem. I think it's a really easy draw for Carlos. Anyway.
kati: Good for Carlos.
Kristine Zeller: Good for Carlos.
kati: And for us, because we predicted he's going to win.
Kristine Zeller: Good for me. Yeah. That's it. on the matches to watch. I would say I talk a few more minutes about.
Kristine Zeller: Sverev.
kati: Yes, before we leave, I'm going to say please leave us reviews. Some of you have, and we love them all. Thank you very much. Please do leave us reviews. You want to say something about the reviews?
Kristine Zeller: No, not about the reviews, but I wanted to mention that there will be not a podcast tomorrow and the day after because we are traveling and we can't. We can't podcast.
kati: Saturday and Sunday. No, no, no.
Kristine Zeller: From there.
kati: You will be in our minds and we will be collecting data. Therefore, we want to we think we're going to have a longer show, most likely than on Monday. But I also have Formula One to watch at the weekend, so I'm...
Kristine Zeller: Yes.
kati: And I'm working. So I'm working. I'm working over the weekend. I have Formula One and the US Open. My head will implode.
Kristine Zeller: yes
kati: But if I have anything to say on Monday, which is tennis related, I will let you know. and um
Kristine Zeller: Yes.
kati: We therefore have a longer recording, but I will leave this one now.
Kristine Zeller: Yes, and I will update you on this very much and see you soon, Kati.
kati: Ciao.
Kristine Zeller: Bye. All right, so speaking about the Zverev match. So that one was actually an interesting one.
Kristine Zeller: I think he really had a hard time. Yeah. Also, I found it really interesting on the with the on -court interview. He said, my performance has been quite shit, but I won.
Kristine Zeller: And I think that says it all because his performance was actually quite. Bad. It was by quite bad. The tie break um in the third set.
Kristine Zeller: That was... That was quite... quite well done apart from a few lapses, but. And also the fourth the fifth set, then finally... was well done. because he got the broke, he did the break quite early.
Kristine Zeller: but Overall, the performance has been really... And I was really watching almost the whole match live because it was on so late again, US time. So it ended quarter past two US time. So super late, which obviously allowed me to watch.
Kristine Zeller: I think three sets of the five that they played. live on TV because I was up already. But I think it's just the worst because for Zverev it was the second time in a row that he had to play so late. And I just think it's the worst thing for those poor players to play so late.
Kristine Zeller: And apart from that, I i have to say that Alice, his French opponent, he played really well. So I think that he... Did well. um to bring it to a fifth set, but then. In the end, I think it is also hard to beat Zverev. When he's playing that long, he's just really strong. And I think it's just crazy. Where does Zverev get his energy from?
Kristine Zeller: He's got diabetes, right? So he has to measure measure his blood sugar ah every with every break. And I'm just thinking, how on earth can he play at quarter past two? It's crazy.
Kristine Zeller: So yeah. um zvef um through through to the third round, so good for him. I just wanted to finally mention, I don't know whether you've seen it, if you've seen the Zverev match, they did show... um a short video of the US Open staff putting new strings on Zverev's record.
Kristine Zeller: I've never seen that. And I've never seen that it was kind of shown within the match. So I think it was throughout the break. So the players were sitting down. so they had a few minutes to show the video, but I found it really interesting. And I really love it if they show a little bit of behind the scenes content and where you get to see also some of the staff that are working at the US Open. and
Kristine Zeller: The way to string the the rackets, oh my God, is done very manually. And it looked like really hard work in a really small room. So I'm giving all the props to that man who did string.
Kristine Zeller: the racket and I found it really interesting to see that. All right. So send us some comments, leave us a review, and you will hear from us on. Monday.
Kristine Zeller: Bye.
