Podcast Introduction

00:00:03
Speaker
Hello and welcome to From Dublin to Cleveland. I am Logan Howard. I am joined by the one and only Brendan Thomas Merritt. How are you today, Brendan?

Backgrounds & Humor

00:00:14
Speaker
I'm great. Always great. How's tricks? tricks tricks are good we've got some tricks going on in the background as you can see ah they we are not i am not in the midwest even though it is very warm ah well i am in the midwest but i'm not in the west you know where you live i know where i live i live in ohio you know i'm still in ohio um but uh it is very warm here but it's not so warm that it would be this picture behind me so um brendan what is going on with yours it looks like somebody shattered glass or something
00:00:49
Speaker
And yeah, there's like supernatural battle down the spirit realm between like, you know, fire and lightning or some crap. There you go. Nice. I just decided to get very techie today, guys, because... Why not?
00:01:03
Speaker
Did you know that when you film on Zoom, you can actually choose your own background? You might be thinking, everyone knows this. It is a revelation. only discovered it yesterday, and Logan...
00:01:15
Speaker
About 65 minutes ago when I told him. Yeah, pretty much. Yeah. So wemer we've got backgrounds now. So we look a little bit less ah ridiculous in our rooms and we actually look like we're somewhere else.
00:01:28
Speaker
So, yay, good on us.

Listener Engagement

00:01:31
Speaker
um So ah there's a lot of business to attend to. I guess the first thing I want to start with is we have received an email. So thank you so much to Katie Schrock as she has sent us an email.
00:01:44
Speaker
We are no longer, ah our clock has reset for how many days that we've gone without an email.
00:01:53
Speaker
So thank you, Katie. Logan's desperate begging has finally paid off. No. Correspondence. Correspondence, yes. So thank you, Katie. it was It was good to hear from you.
00:02:05
Speaker
So that was our that was our first area

Launch of FDTC Extras

00:02:08
Speaker
of business. We have a new thing that will be coming out. I believe it'll come out tomorrow, depending on... um how much uploading it takes me to do. It is 99% uploaded. with We'll get there. We'll get there. Yes. But we have the um you got it right now ability with Zencaster to have 10 total hours of um content that we can post. And currently we only use about five.
00:02:34
Speaker
um So I think even with this episode, we'll have still five by the end of the month. um And so what Brendan has been working on for a long time, years and years of work, he posts videos about ah him speaking about Christian topics, prophecy, all of this, you know, ah ah kingdoms and like the the kings like Saul being king, David being king, Solomon being king.
00:03:00
Speaker
He has wealth, a treasure trove of. of stuff. Jesus is king. Yeah, he's got a ton of stuff.

Content Plans

00:03:08
Speaker
Politicians married to men who dress like women. Yes, yes. So he has the many them a ton of episodes that he wants to post, and we have plenty of time to use it. So ah we're going to be announcing and rolling out a new ah podcast that will should be on your Apple and Spotify, willingly, as long as it works.
00:03:31
Speaker
um But... I still have to figure that out, but it's going to be called FDTC Extras. So from Dublin to Cleveland Extras, ah just the acronym. So it fits because we're we're pushing the amount of legal characters that we can use with from Dublin to Cleveland to begin with.
00:03:53
Speaker
Adding any more it's going to get a little pushing it um of it yeah with an E or extras with an X. Are we going like, you know, really radical? Yes. ah Also, I've run into a problem. hope didn't give like an answer. You just said yes.
00:04:07
Speaker
Yeah. It is whatever Logan decides it is. just It's X-TRA. Like E-X-T-R-A. There is an X on the logo. So I figured that that kind of made it connect. Okay. Yeah.
00:04:19
Speaker
So... but i again yeah so So that will be coming to you shortly. ah There'll be stuff that I'll post on there. I should be posting some ride alongs where I drive home from work and you just get to join me on my ride home.
00:04:32
Speaker
I know that was like a big thing in Ireland for a couple weeks where everybody was listening to those episodes. They were avoiding every other episode we've done, but they were like, man, that Logan guy driving in a car. I love that.
00:04:44
Speaker
Because you were driving on the wrong side of the road. They were probably just thinking, oh my goodness, is this guy crazy? What is he doing? You can't drive on the right. yeah it were It was very entertaining. Why is he sitting on that side of the car? What's going on?
00:04:56
Speaker
Why is he yelling at us about being lonely? Why is he yelling at us about this?
00:05:03
Speaker
All the questions, all the questions. So we will be ah revealing that and and launching that out. So it'll be, it should be in the links in the descriptions to this video and in future ones, we'll be having it in there. So you can also find your, for wherever you get your podcast, you can find our extra stuff. It's not, it's not, we're not charging money for it as much as Brendan wants to.
00:05:26
Speaker
um We haven't set up the Patreon

Monetization Ideas

00:05:29
Speaker
yet. Projected on me, okay. Yet. We will. One day, once we know we've got actually ah audience that wants to pay for and for what we do, ah we will we will get there. But... Everyone listens again, because Logan's basically just threatened that if it's popular you keep listening, we will charge you eventually.
00:05:52
Speaker
Well, yeah, you're right. I did.
00:05:56
Speaker
ah love it Logan and I basically plan, guys, what we're going to say before like you know we actually hit record. And then Logan just goes off on a tangent. And he doesn't speak on my behalf, people, okay?
00:06:09
Speaker
And then we'll take all the money that you have. Like, you know, five years or ago, we're like, you know, drop stuff. Logan's not my spokesperson.
00:06:19
Speaker
Anyway, in the meantime, if you want to support us, you can buy a T-shirt at our our website that is From Dublin to Cleveland Shop. You can get those. That's in the link in description now. Currently, you can also buy Brandon Thomas Merritt's book.
00:06:34
Speaker
ah he He also does not want to be a teacher the rest of his life. um So please buy his books. They're very good. I highly recommend. Five out of five stars. Great books.
00:06:44
Speaker
We're waiting on some more. He's working on some more.

Topic Introduction: Dandruff

00:06:47
Speaker
I don't know how he has the time to do it, but he does somehow.
00:06:55
Speaker
yeah Well, anyway, let's get into our discussion today, which today is going to be a bit of a shorter episode, partially because it's a Monday and we both have work. so um But our topic today is going to be dandruff. So Brendan has some things that I'm not sure if they're frustrating to you. Are they extremely... Marvelously frustrating. Okay.
00:07:18
Speaker
They are. They are. So I'm excited to hear them. i will I will come up with a couple. I can't say they'll be as... as deeply frustrating as as Brendan's are, but I will do my best. So I'll turn over to Brendan.
00:07:32
Speaker
Take it away. Yes, and I kind of like this because normally when we do a Dandruff episode, we're like, all right, guys, let us know who you agree with more. And for some reason, don't know, y'all kind of walk in his direction.
00:07:45
Speaker
Today, i'm pretty sure I'm going win.
00:07:49
Speaker
So the first thing I share happened about six hours ago.

Public Transport Etiquette

00:07:53
Speaker
So I wake up at 5.30 every morning and then my friends and I gather at six o'clock to pray. And we pray it from six, sometimes till seven, sometimes 7.45, which stage I'm already on the bus to work, but you know, it's on a Zoom call, so it's fine.
00:08:11
Speaker
And then, know, I go to work where I typically don't really do anything. but So I suppose to have students pop in today and go for a one on one tests and things and, you know, no show after no show after no show. i literally could have just stayed at home in my bed and but and gotten paid and no one would have any the wiser.
00:08:39
Speaker
um And that's not my dandruff, but at some point that might be. People dishonoring your time and not canceling out a schedule. But where am going with this? What actually is my problem?
00:08:50
Speaker
I guess. But then I feel a lot of things right now. um But then after the working day, I hopped in the bus and was on the way home and I love sitting in the very back row in the corners.
00:09:07
Speaker
All right. So in the morning time, i go to the very back row and I'll sit, let's say as you're walking down the aisle, I'll sit on the left. And on the way home, like to go down to the very back.
00:09:21
Speaker
And as you walk down the aisle, sit on the far right. um But this time there was a girl already sitting in the far right. I was like, that's my spot. Move or you shall be moved.
00:09:33
Speaker
But whatever, I said, OK, I'll just sit on the seat that I sat on on the way here. And the back row has five seats. um So in the very middle seat, a guy was sitting, he must have been in his 80s.
00:09:46
Speaker
And you know when you see those lovely old men with those dopey grins and you just know, crap on things. He's a talker. The next thing, he began like trying to start a sort of conversation with me and I was trying to give those generic one-liners to show that like you know I was a nice enough guy to respond to your But I've been up since half past five, people. I just wanted to sleep.
00:10:12
Speaker
um So I'd sit there, my eyes closed, pretending that asleep. And next thing he starting these full blown conversations with me. And I was thinking, are having a laugh? And then again, you know, I'd open my eyes and I'd negatively get a one line of response and I'd shut my eyes again, to get back into sleeping motion.
00:10:28
Speaker
And then he'd do the same. And just as I was about to find Drift Doll, just as I thought he was giving up,
00:10:35
Speaker
it his phone began ringing. And I was, I don't know if this is just me, but when I'm on public transport, This bad boy, my phone, is on silent mode.
00:10:50
Speaker
Because I just think it's inappropriate. when Especially on a bus like you know when people are going to and from college and work. You can't imagine people want to sleep on the way there and way home.
00:11:02
Speaker
And I was thinking, do I actually have to like teach this guy how to turn off the volume? It was just wrecking my head. um And then when he did answer the phone, it was...
00:11:16
Speaker
and I was like, bruh, it's 6pm. And shouting at the absolute top of the lungs. And I was like, you're not actually shouting to reject your voice for a county Brian is in, friend.
00:11:28
Speaker
The reason have a phone is you can speak quietly and you'll still be heard. So that ticked me off. and
00:11:36
Speaker
Yeah. People talking to you when they know you're trying sleep. And it doubles as people... keeping the volume on in their phone, whether public transport, and then speaking really loudly.
00:11:50
Speaker
You know, that's a three in one. All of it caused me to scratch my head. It all gave me dandruff, which I bind in Jesus' name in the natural.

Tea Bag Controversy

00:11:59
Speaker
And the second is Ireland has very long been a divided country, a country divided into two camps.
00:12:10
Speaker
and A manufactured crisis and by... and big businesses, tea companies, Lions and Barry's.
00:12:22
Speaker
Lions tea bags have always been known for being rich. When you drank them,
00:12:33
Speaker
was it the best taste ever? Wasn't really sweet or scented, but you felt very upper crust. Hmm. The other leading company is Barry's.
00:12:48
Speaker
nicer taste, but a poor man's tea. So the nation has long contested which is best, Lions or Barry's.
00:12:59
Speaker
And I had always been team Lions, you know, the Lion of Judah. Only this is L-Y-O-N-S, doesn't matter. um And then we got a box of tea bags, Lions, of course.
00:13:13
Speaker
there a couple weeks ago. And as was drinking the tea, I just thought, eugh, that's bit off. And lions used to have pyramid-shaped tea bags. They were originally rectangular, then they became pyramid-shaped maybe 20 years ago. And I remember thinking, are having a laugh?
00:13:35
Speaker
Is this necessary? But I have to say, they were very, very good. But just there recently, they went back to the rectangular teabags. And I thought, oh, but you've got a... You're unknown for being the pyramid teabags now. You know, lions, you're you're the king of the jungle.
00:13:55
Speaker
You're the king of Egypt as well. Someone's probably going to take a screenshot at some point of this, like, you know, triangle hand gesture and be like, he's part of the Illuminati. Aleister Crowley reborn.
00:14:07
Speaker
Someone actually did that of my videos ages ago. Not one, the two us were on, just me. They're like, you're such a phony, such a hypocrite. you're right a you you know You talk with Jesus all the time, but your videos are full of Illuminati symbols.
00:14:24
Speaker
i I love that someone actually paid that much attention to my videos to write it. I was like, okay, whatever. thank you But just there a few weeks ago, they went back to the reticular shape after two decades. And I thought, my goodness, it has actually impacted the taste. The pyramid shapes so much better.
00:14:42
Speaker
but no. I just said it can't be that because I used to drink lions back when they were rectangular 20 years ago. And they still taste but tasted better than this.
00:14:54
Speaker
Did we just get like a bad batch? So went looking for the tea box because we have a tea canister where we keep our tea bags. So I went looking for the cardboard box and I saw one of my least favorite words in the English language written on the box.
00:15:12
Speaker
biodegradable. And I just said, no. They've joined the Green Agenda scan. So I scoured the box and I couldn't find proof, the proof I was looking for.
00:15:28
Speaker
but i I suspected correctly what it was. So it wents on their website I and typed Lions teabags. And sure enough, they now make the teabags from plants.
00:15:41
Speaker
And I said, I am a carnivore. I did not fight my way the top of the food chain to drink tea made from grass.
00:15:53
Speaker
And I made a decision there and then. Lions, screw you. Android Tango teabags. N-O spells. Hell's the no. So I stopped drinking them.
00:16:04
Speaker
So now I've kind of been drinking, like, you know, chai latte with, like, vanilla extract tea. But, um... Strong advertise is nice, but you can't really have too many of them. It's very strong.
00:16:16
Speaker
Yeah. And today I've had like three cups of coffee. And actually I do feel like a headache. um and ons So that's, yeah, I'm not really a coffee drinker. um And I just said, you know what? I never thought I'd give up tea.
00:16:29
Speaker
But if anything is going to make me give up tea, it's making tea bags out of grass. So I just refuse to drink Lions now. I refuse. If they want me back as a customer, and I've been a dedicated customer for 25 years, they have to go back to making proper tea bags.
00:16:47
Speaker
But they're full of plastic. They tasted better. But you can't put them in your garden and compost. I've done it and my flowers thrive. So they're the two things that have really peeved me off the last couple weeks.
00:17:03
Speaker
So, uh... Yeah, fam bam, tell me which one you prefer. And now Logan's going to throw his hat in the ring. But again, you're going to go for one of mine, okay? Don't vote for his. I need to win.
00:17:16
Speaker
All right. So, yeah, that... it's almost It's almost to the point where you need to buy tea from America, and that's that's a dangerous like proposition, but... If they're going to do they do you like that in Ireland, I mean... It's shambolic. I might possibly try out Barry's again.
00:17:35
Speaker
Because you know what? I won't feel like a tracer because Lions betrayed me first. Yeah. So my checkup varies, but if the taste isn't quite what i what I'm looking for. Yeah. i My tea drinking days might just about be over, which I never thought I'd say, but it's

Event Overload

00:17:52
Speaker
an exclusive. have You heard it here first?
00:17:55
Speaker
Crazy. Crazy to talk about. Wow. um So for me, ah the first thing I would am really... I guess confused by frustrated makes me scratch my head um is why everybody has to schedule things in September and October.
00:18:14
Speaker
All right. I don't understand this. All right. It's feels like every weekend there's about five different things going on in September and October. It is too much, too much guys. We have November.
00:18:25
Speaker
We have December. We have January. We have March. We have all these other months that you could like, spread out throughout the whole year like you have may you know all these great months no no no no no we need to do everything in september and october there is about 48 000 things happening at our just our church that have been scheduled in october there's about 12 things going on there is everybody pastor know that you're using this ministry as an opportunity she just on past decisions
00:18:58
Speaker
I'm not hey, man it's not he just these are people's ideas, okay? These are not his, all right? Other people made these plans to do these. um But I'm just saying there's too much going on, whether it's church, whether it's my own personal life.
00:19:14
Speaker
Everybody's trying to like plan things. I have to tell people no, ah that I can't come to your thing about Well, it feels like every other day. They'll be like, oh, hey, we should do this thing.
00:19:25
Speaker
No, I'm busy. No, I'm busy. No, I'm busy. You know, everything starts in August and, you know, everything then continues on in September. But people just think, this is a great time to start things. No, call me in January. I have nothing going on in January.
00:19:42
Speaker
You can schedule me then. All right. I have February open. I mean, February, I might go crazy in February because I have nothing to do. But... September, too much going on. It is too stressful.
00:19:55
Speaker
I'm getting too old for this. Please stop.
00:20:01
Speaker
I can't handle it anymore. I can't handle getting up at 5.30 in the morning and then being out all day until like 10 p.m. at night. Can't do it, guys. Can't hack it.
00:20:12
Speaker
It's not, just can't. We've got to stop scheduling things in September. Spread it out. We've got a full 12 months. Use them. i don't give you an android That gives you grades.
00:20:24
Speaker
Yeah, you're right. This whole notion of, oh, the kids are back at school, so let's establish all these new routines. Let's not. that's not Or, oh, we know everyone goes on holidays during the summer, so let's just do something in September. Why not give people a reason to stick around in the summer?
00:20:47
Speaker
Yeah. This whole... summer industrial complex with the beach bowl and the striped umbrellas and and and then the beaches and the airplanes what if you're all part of the matrix spending money that you can't afford just because you've been brainwashed think it's a good idea why not stay at home support your local church or your weddings or whatever it is that logan's giving it about yeah yeah don't make his life easier talking thing about yourself i've been so selfish have talent I'm telling you, next week is going to be insane. I've got something every night.
00:21:21
Speaker
ah Tuesday night, I've got probably ah hanging out with a friend. Wednesday night is church. Thursday night is a young adults group. Friday night is camping. Saturday is camping.
00:21:34
Speaker
It's just going to be booked. ah It's going to be busy. So please spread out your events throughout the whole year. Thank you. This is a PSA.
00:21:47
Speaker
ah Maybe one's worth of frustration was just unleashed in those it's five minutes. Yeah.

Shopping Pet Peeves

00:21:53
Speaker
While we're on the topic of things that are annoying, though, on Friday night, there were there were two back-to-back things that were very annoying to me. The first one was I went to a barbecue restaurant to get good pulled of pork ribs.
00:22:07
Speaker
They were out of both of those. So we didn't get the barbecue. Sad. We rectified it on Sunday, but didn't get on Friday. So that's that's where I'm going, going into this next thing. So I go, you know what? Across the plate across the way is a store.
00:22:23
Speaker
I need to get a specific piece, little piece for my board game that I'm creating. So I need this little piece. I need like two or three bags of these. That's all I need. I'll just walk in there, get them, leave, right?
00:22:37
Speaker
No big deal. They're about to close anyway. Nobody's in there. No problem. So I walk in there. I go to the aisle and i I get to the aisle. I see all the little wooden pieces and it looks like all of the little wooden pieces are there because all of the bags, there's every single one as a bag. There's no like empty space.
00:22:59
Speaker
And so I'm like, Oh, this is good. My, my, my things are here. So I start scanning through all of it. I find one of them and I go, sweet, I've got one. Then I scan for the second one.
00:23:10
Speaker
Can't find it. Scan for the third one. Can't find it. I'm standing here for probably five, ten minutes at this point, just scanning through, going, the bags are all here, the rows are all filled, there should be what I'm looking for. why what It was literally here two weeks ago. They couldn't have canceled the the it the little items in two weeks.
00:23:31
Speaker
And then, guess what I figured out? The reason why all of the rows were full was because people had taken the ones off and put it on one that it wasn't supposed to be on.
00:23:42
Speaker
So the little pieces that I needed were covered up by something that was not supposed to be there. So I rectified that situation, but I spent 15 minutes in that darn aisle...
00:23:56
Speaker
Trying to find the pieces I need, but because some jerk moved the thing over, I don't know if it was the person who works there who did it, because, oh, the the one row was too full, so we had to like move the other one over. Or if it was somebody who was just being mean and a jerk, I don't know, but...
00:24:14
Speaker
I don't get this whole people just put things where they don't belong. Like, I've never understood why somebody would take, like, a steak and throw it in the freezer because it's supposed to go in the, like, refrigeration area. yeah Like, they can't put the item back. it's Maybe it's an American thing. I don't know if it happens in Ireland, too.
00:24:32
Speaker
But apparently Americans just think, if I've grabbed this item and I just change my mind, I can just leave it wherever the heck I want. No, you can't. Put your stuff back. Be a good citizen. All right.
00:24:43
Speaker
If you got a cart out of the cart thing, go put your cart back. Don't leave it in the middle of the parking lot. I had to be the guy who had to go get the carts. I still have nightmares about that. All right.
00:24:55
Speaker
Stop it. Logan's works in retail. He knows exactly what he's saying. Stop it. He knows exactly he's talking about experientially.
00:25:05
Speaker
Stop it. Stop what you're doing. Put things back. Put them where they belong. will fight you and I will haunt you. That's actually a really good one.
00:25:18
Speaker
Actually, you know what? Given the week that it is, and fact that the apocalypse has not begun, the rapture did not happen, I'm going to throw in a

Failed Predictions

00:25:28
Speaker
fifth one. oh Go for it.
00:25:31
Speaker
This abject nonsense. of rapture predictions. Can we please just as a society at the body of Christ globally stop?
00:25:45
Speaker
but
00:25:48
Speaker
The number of reports I heard of Christians leaving their phones unlocked and just abandoning them so people could pick up their phones, look at their Bible verse Jesus memes because they were going to get raptured, but this was like post-rapture evangelistic tool.
00:26:13
Speaker
Well, clap, clap. I'm not going to say a word that rhymes with that. ah You now have to go get a new phone. Or people who who like sold their cars on the 23rd of September because they figured, well, we're not going to be here tomorrow anyway.
00:26:33
Speaker
And well, I hope you enjoyed walking to work or getting a taxi or paying for an Uber or people who just like, you know, sold their homes.
00:26:45
Speaker
Like, well why, why, why, Why? why How did having an extra 200,000 in the bank help you when you weren't going to be here to spend it?
00:26:59
Speaker
Just stupidity. These people are embarrassing the body of Christ.
00:27:06
Speaker
I had to go to work and listen to workmates mocking these people.

Speaker
And I had no defense. I had to say, you're right. They are crazy. They are nuts. I heard of one church congregation who were part of the the Rapture's Gonna Happen Now scam, and they were so forlorn that their prediction was man-made and false and did not happen, that apparently they actually threw
00:27:41
Speaker
right their clothes and shoes onto trees around the church property so it looked like they had been raptured and their clothes had, I don't know, Jesus stripped them naked in the heavens and thrown their clothes down on the branches or some nonsense.
00:27:56
Speaker
And then they it went around and hid somewhere naked or whoa however they did it to try to convince the public, like their surrounding area, that the rapture had happened. Just nonsense.
00:28:09
Speaker
um because I first heard this stupid prediction maybe four weeks ago. Possibly five. And the person who was trumpeting it was basically saying, oh, you know, um the Feast of Trumpets are some nonsense.
00:28:26
Speaker
Yeah, we're the body of Christ people. We're not Old Testament Jews. I mean, the book of Hebrews literally says that we don't live under the Old Testament festivals and new moons and covenants and and and land covenants or Israel and the likes We are a mystery.
00:28:45
Speaker
We're God's top secret plan. With the Gentile led by Christ, he did something new, some experimental, with the secret that he'd kept hidden to the foundation of the earth um being lame.
00:28:58
Speaker
And we're not supposed to live yoked to like Jewish traditions because all those prophecies of the coming day of the that's like the millennial kingdom being ushered in. That's like Revelation 19.
00:29:13
Speaker
The rapture is a mystery. It's a secret. That's why the Apostle Paul says was a mystery or a secret, because no one else had ever written about it before he revealed it. So people looking at Old Testament prophecies and Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and playing all this guesswork, it's ridiculous.
00:29:32
Speaker
What a waste of your time and you're embarrassing the rest of us. And you make our lives harder. You make our job harder because there's only there are only so many times you can be wrong about this.
00:29:43
Speaker
before people just say Christians are nuts. So, yeah. That's another thing that caused me to scratch my head. Why do people repeatedly do this every few Septembers?
00:29:56
Speaker
Honestly and truly. I don't know. and It's just bombastic. So yeah, cut it out. If there's one thing you know for sure, as soon as somebody says this is the day that that Christ is going to come back, that's the day he's not coming back.
00:30:13
Speaker
so Yep.
00:30:17
Speaker
You can take that one to the bank. That's it. That's it. I wonder if there was somebody who who who had like put their um like account online of their like bank account saying, here guys, everybody who needs some cash, you can use this account. Because I'm going to be raptured. That would have actually been phenomenal.
00:30:42
Speaker
i wouldn have big i I was too busy venting prematurely. actually should have been like trying to capitalize on other people's stupidity.

Discussion on Matthew 6

00:30:53
Speaker
Alright, well anyway, let's get into our Bible passage. So what I have today is, this is in Matthew 6. um I'm going to start in verse 19, but I'll go through 23. And it says, "...do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, where thieves break in and steal.
00:31:12
Speaker
But lay yourselves treasure in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." The lamp of the body is the eye.
00:31:24
Speaker
If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in you is darkness, how great is that darkness?
00:31:37
Speaker
Seems like it's quite a left-hand turn, right? It seems like as Jesus is speaking here, it makes it pretty pretty straightforward. And, you know, don't lay up for yourselves treasures on earth. That's the first couple verses there. And it's like, okay, yeah, yeah.
00:31:51
Speaker
You know, of where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. All of a sudden, out of nowhere, he pulls out this, the lamp of the body is the eye. And if your eye is good, your whole body is full of light.
00:32:04
Speaker
And so I've been using this verse this week with my students to um ask them, what does Jesus mean? Right. Because I think there's a lot of people who would hear him say this or hear it out of context and just be like, no idea, no idea what's going on.
00:32:19
Speaker
But my response was, teacher, what the heck does this have to do in math class?
00:32:25
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah. So ah I have been asking them what what do they think it means? What is what is Jesus trying to say here? um And they do they do get a reward for doing this. They get a nice little chocolate and ah an opportunity at a board game because I have a excess of those.
00:32:43
Speaker
So um so there's there's a reward for for doing this. But they ah they came up with some interesting theories and and thoughts on this. The big thing that they saw was that the lamp of the eye is the body. Basically, um our ability to see is huge.
00:33:01
Speaker
um Seeing is very important. Blind people cannot see. They don't know what's going on. But being able to see, they can't see the stuff going on. That was poor choice of words.
00:33:15
Speaker
Fred's losing it in the background. ah But when you're able to Harris thing to say, that was a very Kamala Harris thing to say. The blind people can't see what they can't see.
00:33:28
Speaker
Like they don't know what's happening or who's around them They can see nothing. yeah They don't see. I'm just quoting what the kid said.
00:33:43
Speaker
um But we pulled out how that if your eye is good, it's that idea of if you're when your eye is working, when you're able to see, you're able to tell the difference between good and bad.
00:33:55
Speaker
You're able to know that this is what I should choose. And this is what is not good to choose. um Having that conscience, knowing what is right and what is wrong and being able to decide that. Whereas when you get to your eye is bad, well, when your eye is evil or bad, it's always going to choose the wrong thing. You're always going to choose sin. You're going to run towards sin.
00:34:14
Speaker
And that's one of the things that's encouraging to me when you read something like this is if you have the ability to choose to do the right thing, um and you do end up choosing to do the right thing, even if you struggle with sin and you're struggling with a specific thing, if you are able to choose to resist against that, that is the Holy Spirit working inside of you.
00:34:35
Speaker
That is a um a good reminder that you have the Holy Spirit within you, that you are saved, that you are different, because most people will fall for the trap every single time.
00:34:48
Speaker
if they are sin If they are stuck in their sin and they don't have the Holy Spirit, they will always choose that. Every time. Their eye is evil. It will continually cause them to sin. But when your eye is good, you have the ability to choose and you're full of light. You're full of hope because you have the Holy Spirit living within.
00:35:06
Speaker
That's the cool part that I liked about this verse. And it seems like such a left hook, but it is a it is a good left hook in terms of talking about your eye.
00:35:17
Speaker
So that's what I have for the Bible. Anything you want to add or mocking you have for me, Brendan? Thank you. one You said left hook there twice, but before that you said a left turn. i was like, you're really, really pushing your come drive with me, come drive, let's drive away.
00:35:37
Speaker
Extra series coming up. Nice shameless plug, by the way. Yes. You're like super liminally brainwashing everyone. You will listen to us two or three times a week. You will listen to all all of our content.
00:35:50
Speaker
Yeah. And then yeah, i I think it's actually very interesting that it starts off with money and then it becomes about the eye.
00:36:02
Speaker
um then and It's not something I've ever questioned before as to why he'd go for one. And the reality is money and let's keep this PG, love.
00:36:16
Speaker
are the two biggest incentives for like, you know, crime, even. theyre They're the two biggest things which just cause people to go absolutely nuts and do the unimaginable principle.
00:36:28
Speaker
And so it is such a massive persuasion, has such a huge hold on people's hearts. And I suppose that would lead into the next point where would say, um,
00:36:42
Speaker
The eye here is the heart, it is the soul, because Jesus said the eyes are the windows to the soul. It's from the eye, know, that you can look at someone and tell that they're sincere, that they're conning you, that they're deceiving you, that they're demonized. um And when the soul is full of light...
00:37:04
Speaker
There's health in the body as your soul prospers. May your physical health prosper. May your whole life prosper. John would later write. and But when there's darkness in the soul, exactly, it changes your perspective, it changes your perception, ah changes your reality.
00:37:24
Speaker
and You belong to the kingdom or the empire of illusion and delusion, of deception by spirits of wickedness in high places.
00:37:40
Speaker
i And it's a real indicator actually of um on the heart and from the overflow of the heart. The mouth will speak and the body will act. So when there's light within, you'll walk in the ways of righteousness.
00:37:56
Speaker
You'll talk in the ways of righteousness. You'll think more righteously. But if there's only darkness within, well, that bears fruit all of its own. Yeah.
00:38:11
Speaker
Very good. Well, um, our closing, I'll, I'll pray for us quickly and then we'll do our, um, our shout outs for the week. Um, but thank, thank you Lord for all that you do for us. We pray that you'd help us to choose, um, choose wisely to choose things, uh, that you have for us of wealth that comes from you.
00:38:31
Speaker
Um, and where our money and what we spend, ah help us to give those things up to you and our time and, um, And the things that we love, help it to be the things that you love. Lord, help us not to serve two masters because we can't do that.
00:38:46
Speaker
Help us not too um to choose love and or to choose our love of our money and love of our stuff, but to choose to love you and to follow you. um Help us to give up ah some of the things that ah hold us back from loving you more. Lord, help us to put our all of our treasures in into your kingdom, into your heaven, and to not leave our treasures here and try to store up things and build our kingdoms here when...
00:39:14
Speaker
um The real kingdom, the kingdom we want to be a part of is with you one day. So Lord, I pray that you'd work in each of those who listens hearts, help them to ah to find you, to seek you, to choose you, and to follow you and love you all of their days. And if they don't know how to do that, help them to reach out and contact us.
00:39:32
Speaker
um And i pray that you'd give them all a wonderful rest of the day. In Jesus' name, amen. Alright, so,
