Introduction to Casual Nerdity Podcast

00:00:10
Speaker
Casual Nerdity is a podcast celebrating and discussing the pop culture that we love. Movies, TVs, comics, books, games, you name it. Our aim is to talk about the good, what worked, and yeah, sometimes what didn't.
00:00:22
Speaker
All with an eye towards building up, not tearing down. Thanks for joining us.
00:00:29
Speaker
Welcome back to Casual Nerdity, everybody. Hope you are having a good one. I'm Daryl. I'm Nick. And it's just the two of us again this time around. Just the two of us.
00:00:42
Speaker
yeah Don't, don't, don't sing. Don't sing, Nick. ah But, by the way, Nick, totally totally unrelated, would you say that the mark of a really good singer and actor is that if they can...
00:01:01
Speaker
belt out tunes and have a killer voice and then they turn around and they do a role where they sing poorly that you know that that's a sign that somebody's a really convincing actor right?
00:01:16
Speaker
I'd agree. Okay then give Isa Briones an Emmy. That's all I'm gonna say. Oh again it's easier to sing decent and then pretend to sing bad.
00:01:29
Speaker
Yeah she you You will see. Just get caught up on the pit. You will see.

Summer Movie Season Overview

00:01:37
Speaker
But we are, ah since it is just the two of us, Nick, it's almost summer movie season, isn't it? It is. And this summer is absolutely stacked with big releases. And honestly, the rest of the year is looking just as big, but we'll save that for another episode or two. Today, we're diving into the movies that we're most hyped for and breaking down what's got us excited and why they're on our radar. So we're calling May through August our summer movie season. You know, that stretch that really kicks off around Memorial Day weekend. But, you know, we're going to sneak in one or two early contenders before Memorial Day hits.
00:02:27
Speaker
Because that's the more traditional in terms of like where movie buffs call like the blockbuster summer. And we we know what started Memorial Day weekend being the start of the blockbuster movie season, don't we?
00:02:42
Speaker
Mm-hmm. A little independent film called Star Wars that we absolutely hate. oh yeah. ah As actual film critics here, we we we don't like Star Wars and at all. It's right. It's it's this kid stuff.
00:03:03
Speaker
Well, to to borrow a phrase from our good friend Betsy, who joins us for Clone Watch sometimes, we like Star Wars a perfectly normal amount. And I used that in a thing at work the a week or two ago. I used that phrase in a, you know what you might not know about me or something like that thing at work with some of our our new co-workers.
00:03:28
Speaker
Because ah I was like, most of the people that are in this meeting have known me for at least 12 years. So yeah, I like Star Wars a perfectly normal amount. ah
00:03:40
Speaker
But let's let's dive into these movies that are coming up. What do you say? Let's dive in. So first up, and we're going to go through these in chronological order of when they're being

Excitement for The Devil Wears Prada 2

00:03:52
Speaker
released. First up, we have The Devil Wears Prada 2, which is coming out on May 1st.
00:04:00
Speaker
Go ahead, go. What were you it's about to say? It is a honestly surprisingly late sequel to a pretty damn good good car Good comedy from the early 2000s. It's been referenced a lot, and it's got most of the repeating cast coming back. it's It's a stacked cast.
00:04:24
Speaker
the The major one who's not coming back is the true villain of the original movie, Anne Hathaway's boyfriend. Yes. He he is not coming back.
00:04:34
Speaker
But it's still going to have that antagonistic relationship relationship between... between our classic Seagal Pile duo. And it's just a, it seems like business as usual, but it's just higher stakes. Now, full disclosure, i have only seen the original once.
00:04:54
Speaker
And I did not dislike it. it i've enjoyed it for what it was. the sequel is one of those that I am, despite only having seen the original once and it not being a particular favorite or least favorite of mine, I am irresistibly intrigued by the trailers for the sequel. And I am almost certain that I am going to end up seeing the sequel.
00:05:23
Speaker
I'm just not going to be rushing out to a theater to see it. If it, I'm, Similarly, I didn't see the original in theaters. I saw it on ah cable when it first came out on cable. And I found it but rather intriguing, and very fun. And I've seen it at least two times, maybe three.
00:05:43
Speaker
But I definitely enjoyed it and like more than I thought I would. And it's it's intriguing. that's that I'm surprised it took this long for a sequel to develop.
00:05:56
Speaker
But Honestly, that kind of has me intrigued to see what they've cooked up. And just from the trailers, the trailers are looking very sharp. The trailers are looking very sharp, and they seem to be playing into the fact that you know even you offsre or out of the context of this movie, Anne Hathaway has gone from an up-and-coming young star to she is now also a bankable, solid actress, kind of almost a peer to Meryl Streep.
00:06:36
Speaker
Which adds to both like a, the fact that they're sort of acknowledging that adds to the already like unique rivalry that they had from the first film.
00:06:47
Speaker
So, they they could definitely They're definitely playing that up in the marketing, and i honestly would like to see them be more on like a peer rivalry hurry he in the film. Because they can now stand head-to-head.
00:07:03
Speaker
Yeah. yeah so i Like said, I will get around to seeing it. it it's probably I know I am not going to be in the theater the weekend of May 1st to see it, but I will eventually see it. no Most likely not, unless... like Someone that I know in our group wants to see it and they need someone else to watch it with them.
00:07:24
Speaker
Now, next up is one that you asked to be put on the list that I hadn't even heard of. So I know nothing about. So Nick, sell me on the May 8th release of Sheep Detectives.
00:07:38
Speaker
Sheep Detectives was a sleeper for this. I... I can't even remember when I first saw it, but it's a, it's kind of an absurd pre third premise, but it stars Hugh Jackman as a sheep herder with a,
00:07:54
Speaker
Bunch of loyal sheep. But he's a sheepherder who is very big into murder mystery novels. And he likes to read them to his sheep. Okay.
00:08:05
Speaker
He dies. Mysterious. But but his healing factor. and he's He's not Wolverine. this is We don't get into that until the end of the year. oh okay. yeah He dies and his sheep have been read these multiple stories but of murder mysteries on him.
00:08:24
Speaker
are going to endeavor to try and solve his murder. Okay. All right. i I can see that. Talking sheep trying trying to solve a murder mystery when they all they have to go on are classic classic mystery novels.
00:08:39
Speaker
Hijinks ensue. Hijinks ensue. You gotta love hijinks. And when they ensue. And that's ah that's just a fun present. That's just a fun premise. it's like It has a pretty good, cat solid cast. Hugh Jackman, even though he's the the murder victim. It just sounds like a fun time to enjoy. does sound fun. i got The premise is fun.
00:09:08
Speaker
The trailer has

Analyzing The Mandalorian and Grogu Marketing Strategy

00:09:09
Speaker
got a couple good, solid laughs. I think it's going to be just a bit of like a mystery comedy. Yeah, it that it does sound fun. It really does.
00:09:19
Speaker
ah yeahre like it Am I expecting something? It's definitely not what I'm going to pick like the the top of of the summer, but it's like it might be a good sleeper hit that anyone wants to see.
00:09:31
Speaker
and said Give it a check out. It just seems fun. And I'm all about fun. and ah Fun and mysteries. and again It just has a bit of whimsy to it. And we could all use a little bit of that right now.
00:09:46
Speaker
Indeed. So, like, and that's that's that's sort of my wild my wild card pick. It's like, I stumbled upon it on a lark, and I was like, you know what? want to see that.
00:10:00
Speaker
ah but Next up, we we hit Memorial Day weekend proper. It also seems to be a bit whimsical, especially for the franchise that it's part of. And it's our first, probably our first big blockbuster of the summer.
00:10:18
Speaker
And that is... That is The Mandalorian and Grogu. da-a dan dada shoot you you Copyright strike, dude. chsh That's right. That's right.
00:10:33
Speaker
So this one, it looks fun. We've we've been talking for months that we're we're trying to figure out what the heck they're they're doing with the marketing on this thing.
00:10:46
Speaker
and it's i expected i I expected a heavier blitz. Yeah. I expected a heavier blitz, and as we're recording this, the final trailer for it dropped yesterday.
00:11:02
Speaker
What are the last few posters? And that is... the trailer that made me say, okay, I was going to see this anyway, but yeah, this I want to see. This should have been the first trailer. hey problem But again, I think the whole thing is like, it's just banking on fun. It's banking on fun.
00:11:26
Speaker
ah i know we tried to stay positive on on the podcast, but we were talking right before we started recording that in...
00:11:37
Speaker
Kathleen Turner's exit interview from Lucasfilm. Kathleen who? set She you know, the Antichrist. You said Kathleen Turner, not Kathleen Kennedy. Did I? i meant Kathleen Kennedy.
00:11:52
Speaker
I don't know why I said Kathleen Turner. And Kathleen Kennedy's exit interview

Debate on Masters of the Universe Film

00:11:57
Speaker
from Lucasfilm, she said that um Disney has been playing it kind of safe ever since The Rise of Skywalker with what they approve Star Wars-wise.
00:12:11
Speaker
And that there's stacks of great scripts that Lucasfilm and kennedy were like yes this is awesome let's do this and eiger and disney were like well and as fun as the mandalorian and grogu looks this is probably the single most risk averse project yeah that they could have picked for star wars coming back to theaters
00:12:41
Speaker
yeah There's probably a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff, because there's a lot of behind-the-scenes that we probably won't hear about for a while, but I suspect that this was supposed to be the fourth season turned into a movie.
00:12:53
Speaker
Oh, yeah, that that's definitely the feel that I get. you know And from watching you Alex and Molly from Star Wars Explained, we've mentioned them multiple times on the show.
00:13:04
Speaker
And how we wish to... was to ah yeah What's our feelings? Do we want to meet them, absorb them into ourselves, replace them? I i would be fine with meeting them.
00:13:19
Speaker
i I will not lie that I am jealous that that is their life. but um But they and other podcasters and Star Wars social media type people um have gotten to see the first 20 minutes, and they've said that it does very much feel like classic season one and two Mandalorian stuff, where, go here to find episode.
00:13:52
Speaker
Then they get there. Okay, that points us in this direction to go here for this next quest. And then that takes us here to this next quest.
00:14:03
Speaker
Or as i said, like this is just this is a state-floating Star Wars role-playing campaign. Yeah. But they they mean that in the best possible way. That it it feels like the show... It is comfortable like the show. And that is clearly exactly why Disney said, yes, this is this is the first Star Wars that you're going to do back in theaters.
00:14:28
Speaker
Because it it's our most a popular thing right now. the The only way they could have made it more or applicable to like general audiences is call it The Mandalorian and And the baby Grogu.
00:14:47
Speaker
Yeah, the because the general audiences love their baby Yoda. They love their baby Yoda. And so i understand completely why this is the safe choice. And they feel it's the right choice. But it is the safe choice.
00:15:03
Speaker
But I am looking forward to it. It's going to be fun. We are already planning an outing for our group to go see it that weekend. Tickets literally came on. online today so literally this weekend we're going to be discussing plans yes and considering also to put on the fact that that is the is kind of on a roll with their star wars mall is currently one of their biggest premieres they've had a long time on disney plus yeah Yeah, Maul is really good, and this is going to be really good. and it's going to be it's For those that say that dizzney that Disney Star Wars is dead, that this is definitely their pushing back right now.
00:15:49
Speaker
Now, the only thing that, ah or what I think will be the real test of general audiences coming back to Star Wars in the theater isn't going to be Mandalorian and Grogu, because like we said, the the general audience loves their baby Yoda. It's going to be next year when Starfighter comes out.
00:16:13
Speaker
Honestly, that's going to need a media blitz. That's going to need some strong selling on it. yeah not not Yeah. Not for us. um I'm there. It sounds amazing. It sounds exactly like something that I dig, but it's like general audience, yes, that's going to be... Even with the cast, the cast is stacked, but it's like it's...
00:16:36
Speaker
It's a different cell. Yeah, they they're going to have to get the general audience to go to a Star Wars movie that is not centered around...
00:16:49
Speaker
Established characters. main characters that they grew up with or around Mando and the biggest driver of merch that Star Wars has had in a long time.
00:17:01
Speaker
But I'm i'm in. I am in both these movies. It has a strong cast. like We can talk more about Starfighter when we get closer to it. But hopefully they have a hopefully i wanted like to have a good rollout of like they can't They can't rest on their laurels on this. I want them to give out the full red carpet for this thing.
00:17:24
Speaker
Yep. but Next up on June 5th, we have Masters of the Universe. Now, full disclosure. Full disclosure.
00:17:35
Speaker
Full disclosure here. Masters of the Universe, the toys hit too late for me to be part of their target audience. I had just aged out.
00:17:46
Speaker
when Masters of the Universe hit. And so I have zero... Oh, you were in the Jurassic. I was in the Star Wars and G.I. Joe toys period. I was not in the Masters of the Universe period.
00:18:01
Speaker
But... i had So I have zero nostalgia for the toy line, the cartoon, the 1980 whatever movie with Courtney Cox and Voyager's Tom Paris and Dolph Lundgren.
00:18:18
Speaker
i have I have zero nostalgia for any of it. The movie itself... Honestly, I didn't, to be honest, I i got into G.I. Joe for the short-lived 2018.
00:18:33
Speaker
early 2000s reboot cartoon. And that only lasted two seasons. But I was like, I thought that was cool. And it was very much in the vein of it. It even had brought back the, in fact, as a f throwback to the original at the end of episode, like moral lessons and stuff like that.
00:18:54
Speaker
ah but Also being a bit darker, a bit more edgier, but like still like kept that same vibe. it was like I found it very intriguing and it made me want to re-watch the old stuff. so That was really cool.
00:19:07
Speaker
But again, like gave again i'm I'm not in that nostalgia era for it either. I came into it a later era. and The movie looks um it looks like it could be fun. but It looks like a lot of fun.
00:19:23
Speaker
I'm glad I have zero nostalgia for it, because with Jared Leto as Skeletor, I would be avoiding this like the plague. Honestly, that's the one critique I have. As much as, from the trailers, he's doing a good job because he's a creepy weirdo.
00:19:45
Speaker
Skeletor. I mean, Jared Leto. So is Jared Leto. So it's he's playing to a type that I can finally get. He's not the main character.
00:19:57
Speaker
Yeah, I just... I cannot, in good conscience, give him my money. that's my That's my one problem as well. but is like It does look like it's going to... The Skeletor design looks sick.
00:20:10
Speaker
All of the the designs look cool. it's it's It looks like a fun flick. It does, but I just... I have not been able to bring myself to watch Tron Ares yet.
00:20:22
Speaker
And that's ah that's a franchise that I do have nostalgia for. Same. I've it's i've heard it's good I've heard it's okay. The soundtrack is awesome. The soundtrack is great.
00:20:39
Speaker
I love the soundtrack. But, you know. I just can't bring myself to watch it. Even on, like, other services. it's like it's just I don't want him to be the main character. So i i think that if I think I'll be okay with watching because he's the bad guy and he's going to get his ass beat by He-Man.
00:21:02
Speaker
i mean, I am not trying to dissuade anyone from seeing it if they have any interest in seeing it. It does look fun. It looks good. It's like, and my main reason is like, if I do see it in theaters, it's because, well, Jared Leto's going to get his ass beat by He-Man and that's going to be cool.
00:21:21
Speaker
Now, what might change my mind is if they they do reenact, just like Spider-Man No Way Home reenacted the Spider-Man pointing meme with all three oh the Peter Parkers, if they reenact the Skeletor running away meme, then they might consider.
00:21:43
Speaker
oh ah Considering how kind of weirdly meta the whole the whole like setup for the... Again, I think we said include... Are we allowed to include the links to trailers in ah in our podcast?
00:21:56
Speaker
we We can, but we're going to be... ah We're going to have so many... Yeah, I mean, technically we can. No, it's not. But one of the movies that we're going to be talking about, even though it's only three months away, hasn't even released online the teaser trailer that just dropped today and is only in theaters.
00:22:24
Speaker
Oh, yeah. So, we'll see. but We'll see when I'm typing up the show notes. But I do recommend, like, it it looks like a fun ride, and, you know, what considering the vibe, I wouldn't be surprised if that's not, like, the end of ah the movie that they do.
00:22:43
Speaker
Do the skeletons are running away. that That would be great. Until next time. okay And he better be doing that voice, too. but no The end credits has to be at c z p a PSA.
00:22:57
Speaker
if he We'll see. so the the next thing that I have down on the list is one that, despite who the director is and being a pretty stacked cast, is still kind of flying under the radar.

Speculating on Spielberg's Disclosure Day

00:23:15
Speaker
Honestly, I'm surprised how under the radar this is, considering...
00:23:21
Speaker
It's Steven Spielberg with an absolutely stacked cast. And we are, of course, talking about Disclosure Day, which comes out on June 12th.
00:23:33
Speaker
Now, admittedly, it has been low marketing for a long time. It's been in talks for a while. with like And that that first teaser trailer was creepy as all hell.
00:23:47
Speaker
Oh, it it gave me some real, like, Back to the neck chills. like I don't know what... It feels like a horror film.
00:23:59
Speaker
It feels like a horror film. I don't know what what the horror is. It feels like political thriller, paranormal... I know it has to do... Or at least I assume somewhat extraterrestrial. But like it's hard to tell. Yeah.
00:24:17
Speaker
have Have you heard, and if you have, what do you think of the theories that are floating around there that it is a stealth sequel to Close Encounters?
00:24:29
Speaker
I like that idea, especially with some of the visuals in the trailer. But again, like a lot of visuals are kind of unusual, but there was one that was like, that that's that's Close Encounters. That's that's that's Very Close Encounters.
00:24:45
Speaker
Yeah, and a lot of people are saying that about that same shot. And, you know, I honestly don't know if I want it to be or not. I kind of wish that i had never heard that theory because i would rather not go into the theater with that even in the back of my mind.
00:25:06
Speaker
And I think that was the intention, especially with how little marketing they're doing. They really want this to be... more of a mystery for everyone so so i might even consider that might be just an intentional misdirect i don't know if if it was any other director i might consider that that but this is spielberg he he knows what he's doing when he markets this stuff what involved in like every step of these things What?
00:25:37
Speaker
I mean, this is one that i I occasionally forget that it's even coming, and then when I remember that it's coming, I think, oh, I gotta see that. I think it's it's a day one for me. if i Yes. i Like, not even a case of, like, normally a day one would be, like, we all gather as groups together. like It's more of a case, like, ah day one, I'm pretty sure everyone's day one-ing this this everyone's for on their own trying to get it yep yeah well i mean you know if you want to nick you we if nobody else in the group wants to see it you and i can go see it because i i gotta the trailer is just so intriguing even when you think about if the obvious mystery is it's like it's extraterrestrials like it's the story is seen
00:26:31
Speaker
around that seems way more fascinating than the reveal. And if it's more of a reveal than that, way more cool. Yeah. Oh, absolutely.
00:26:42
Speaker
And just, it's Spielberg. he he's He has just that way, he knows the movie magic. Oh, yeah. i I am definitely, yeah this is definitely a day one for me. It's like, it's a day one for me. It's like, I I just got to see what this is. The fact that he's even been so casey about it with the marketing, it's like, what don't you want me to see, Steven? Yeah. You're going to be intrigued.
00:27:13
Speaker
I know because I know he's going to do some spectacle. He's a masterful spectacle. Let me see what you got hit in there. Show me. Show me. Show me. Show me now. oh Oh, God, you're the same director that didn't show us the shark until, like, you know the last quarter of of Jaws. Oh, that's because he couldn't do it, because it broke apart no every time.
00:27:35
Speaker
I know, but still. But then after that, he learned that lesson, and that's why everything else has always been, like, ends of your seat until you see the thing. Yeah, we didn't see the aliens in Close Encounters until, like, the last ten minutes.
00:27:49
Speaker
wait are you the The build-up of his War of the Worlds is still one of my favorite build-ups to reveal of a creature, and it's a creature we see for most of that film, but it's still that tension.
00:28:02
Speaker
You could cut it with a knife Yeah, and and then you see the creature and you scream in terror because tom it's Tom Cruise. Oh, i wait, that's not the creature you were talking about?
00:28:14
Speaker
ah Tom Cruise is a creature. i I scarcely consider him a human being. He's some sort of alien that has assumed a humanoid form. Yes, he he clearly does not understand our human ways. And speaking of humanoid aliens who don't quite fit in with our humid way human ways, do you like that segue, Nick?
00:28:35
Speaker
Oh, that was a good one. That was a beautiful segue. High five through the internet. Our next movie is Supergirl, which is coming out on June 26th. The second bing screen big screen entry in the new DC universe under the watchful eye of James Gunn. You mean the Nott Snyderverse? Mm-hmm.
00:29:02
Speaker
I'm sorry, i had I was possessed by but i was obsessed by a version with no but no friends. Yeah, well, I mean, yeah. um But ah Millie Alcock as Supergirl, following up from her cameo at the end at the end of last year's Superman. by And it it it's a year old name.
00:29:28
Speaker
And adapting the acclaimed comic ah Supergirl Woman of Tomorrow, this just looks like a lot of fun. It looks so fun.
00:29:40
Speaker
but wait We forgot to mention the best character. Crypto! Crypto is the goodest boy, and Crypto is back as the goodest boy.
00:29:51
Speaker
And, you know, spoiler alert from the trailer. That's worth the ticket alone. Spoiler alert from the trailer, um Crypto, the the goodest boy, gets hurt, and that's one of the driving factors of the story.
00:30:06
Speaker
And I hope that... And woe be tied to anyone and who who hurts Crypto, and again... Who hurts the goodest boy. And Supergirl, she has been known to get into raids. She once held a a red lantern ring, and I wouldn't be surprised if she dips into that that, if the goodest boy is harmed. And speaking of you the Snyderverse, Jason Momoa is back in the DC role that he really wanted before, which is Lobo.
00:30:40
Speaker
And... The main man. If you haven't seen the trailer, he... The main... There's never have been a more main, the main man. didn't that Even that's a smaller bit that we saw in that trailer. heat He killed it.
00:30:56
Speaker
it looks very It looks like a lot of fun. There are people out there who are complaining that, well, it's James Gunn. This looks like it's just Guardians of the Galaxy again. Well, it's actually James Gunn.
00:31:07
Speaker
And James Gunn is even directing this. I know. But you there's a couple of needle drops. And for part of the movie, she's wearing a trench coat. So, yeah, totally the same as as Guardians of the Galaxy.
00:31:20
Speaker
Totally. Totally the same. But I am looking forward to this. Starlord isn't a girl. No. Full disclosure, i have not read Woman of Tomorrow.
00:31:32
Speaker
I am going to read Woman of Tomorrow before we go. It's really good. And... its I didn't know you haven't read it. It's really good. It's kind of a fun romp. That's not what I have not heard.
00:31:46
Speaker
Fun romp. to Woman of Tomorrow. I have heard many superlative things, but fun romp is not a phrase that I have you heard used to describe Woman of Tomorrow.
00:31:59
Speaker
again It's been a while since I've read it. I think I read it in 2019, so I have reread it. Yeah, I am going to read it before before we hit that movie. Oh, we could do a book club.
00:32:13
Speaker
Well, Ed, we're... Jumping back a few movies here, we are going to be doing hey a casual nerdity episode on The Mandalorian and Grogu. And we will also be doing an episode on Supergirl.
00:32:28
Speaker
So you will be hearing us and probably one, two, or more of our friends um just opining about Supergirl after we go see it.
00:32:41
Speaker
Mm hmm. Now, Supergirl is going to be traipsing around the galaxy. But let's talk about the original or story of going up around many different hurdles and issues. um The Brady Bunch?
00:32:56
Speaker
A bit older than that. Oh, I love Lucy. A good couple hundred years earlier. oh you mean the Odyssey coming out on July 17th, directed by Christopher Nolan.
00:33:10
Speaker
Yes. Tickets have been on sale for like a year already, which is just insane.

Anticipation for Nolan's The Odyssey

00:33:18
Speaker
If you haven't heard that Christopher Nolan is doing The Odyssey, you're under a rock.
00:33:24
Speaker
And... This is the first of two movies this summer with the heavenly couple Tom Holland and Zendaya in it.
00:33:39
Speaker
Mm-hmm. They will be they'll they'll be coming out in two movies about two weeks apart. Spoiler alert, we will be discussing the second movie shortly. um But, yeah, this just... You sold me...
00:33:56
Speaker
It's a day one for me because one, Christopher Nolan, two, Greek Pathology. Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. And we mentioned Disclosure Day has a stacked cast.
00:34:10
Speaker
I don't think there is probably not another cast this stacked until December. And in December, there are two with casts that are this stacked.
00:34:22
Speaker
And it is like both are like legendary directors. Honestly, we are we are eating good as fans of cinema. If you aren't planning on seeing The Odyssey, what are you doing watching a whats a movie? This is going to be and experience. So I am just refreshing myself.
00:34:45
Speaker
on this stacked cast here. So we've got i want we've got Matt Damon, who will probably be bumped because Jimmy Kimmel runs out of time. We have Tom Holland. We have Anne Hathaway again.
00:35:00
Speaker
We have Robert Pattinson. We have Lupita Nyong'o. We have Zendaya. We have Charlize Theron. We have John Bernthal.
00:35:11
Speaker
We have John Leguizamo. We have Mia Gough. we just like And in supporting roles, we have Elliot Page and Samantha Morton. And it's like, oh my god, these are supporting characters?
00:35:34
Speaker
The IMD Page is wild. So, I mean, just, and yes, this is an epic story, so it needs an epic cast, but oh my god.
00:35:50
Speaker
You're like, only, only someone like like Christopher Nolan can get people to be of high caliber as this supporting cast. They'd be like, yeah, we'll be the supporting cast. I wouldn't be surprised if there's like some other A-listers who are just in there as extras.
00:36:08
Speaker
Yeah. So, it's like, this is a day one for me. I absolutely am going to be there. am going to be getting my money's worth out of my... Attention listeners, we do not get Plugola or Payola out of this.
00:36:25
Speaker
But, I will be getting my money's worth out of my Cinemark movie club this summer. I actually... actually, starting this year, I actually...
00:36:37
Speaker
enlisted said movie club to assist. Oh, mainly because of how stacked this whole, this whole year is being with, with movies. Yeah.
00:36:49
Speaker
Yeah. It's, if I got to see movies, I might as well get a little bit of a discount, a little bit of extra with it. Exactly. Exactly. It's worth the 10 bucks a month.
00:37:01
Speaker
And it's like the Odyssey. between, it's between if i had to be like If I had to pick like what are the two big your biggest of of the summer in terms of like absolute, if you're a cinephile, cine movie watcher, it's just Closer Day and The Odyssey.
00:37:23
Speaker
Yeah. those are this Those are the must-sees. And luckily, they're month a month apart, so that I can save on your movie bill. Well, not a month apart.
00:37:35
Speaker
Just one week after The Odyssey, Completely different. And a but a brand new contender into the ring. Is Evil Dead Burn on July 24th. Now, let me tell you, I have been pleasantly surprised by the modern era Evil Dead movies.
00:37:57
Speaker
Same here. ah bit I've been a big fan of classics for a while. I enjoyed the classics. I enjoyed the classics. I love Army of Darkness.
00:38:09
Speaker
I subscribed to specifically i subscribed to stars specifically to be able to watch Ash vs. Evil Dead. And that that was fun. that was really But and i I had seen the first Evil Dead revival slash remake, whichever you want to call it.
00:38:30
Speaker
and yeah but That was good. that was good i didn't pay close attention to it, but probably two years ago now, our friends on the Movie Defenders did an episode on...
00:38:44
Speaker
on that version of Evil Dead. And so to prepare for that episode, since i had I had only seen it the one time and hadn't really paid close attention to it, I watched it again and was like, oh, oh, this is better than I remember it being. And then and of course, it you know it sits it it it was Fede Alvarez.
00:39:05
Speaker
And it was Fede Alvarez setting down a pattern that we saw him successfully use in Alien Romulus. which was part it take part of a franchise, take elements of that franchise that are familiar, maybe kind of spin them in a slightly different direction. You're not completely doing member berries, but you are hitting a few nostalgia buttons, but you're still giving a new story.
00:39:32
Speaker
A couple moments if you say like, all right, that's a bit too on the nose, but everything else hits clockwork. And then, because I enjoyed that, I went ahead and I watched the follow-up Evil Dead Rise.
00:39:47
Speaker
yeah and And that actually, it took the premise and said, like hey, let's take this out of an isolated area.
00:39:59
Speaker
And what happens if this happens in a city? And flips the whole script. It does. And it is, again, it it took what, again, like, that's why I'm excited to see what Fede Alvarez does next to the Alien franchise.
00:40:18
Speaker
in know If he can do the same magic again that he did with Rise. Like, Rise was like, wow. Well, Fede didn't do Rise, and Fede isn't doing Burn.
00:40:30
Speaker
Yeah, yeah. But they continue... By setting it up for others to, like, take that chance. Yeah, and I hadn't heard anything about what the plot is of this until today. Because, okay, so peek behind the curtain time.
00:40:48
Speaker
Originally, we had kind of planned at the beginning of each movie segment, ah I was going to pull audio of the trailers and we were going to run the trailers. Well, A, a lot of these trailers don't have any dialogue.
00:41:01
Speaker
Mm-hmm. And so they're completely lost in just an audio medium like this. And second, I got to Evil Dead Burn. And as of the day that we are recording this, you know, for there gravity ten point twenty six there's not much information about it. We're recording on April 17th. It comes out in about three months.
00:41:27
Speaker
And we mentioned it earlier. The first teaser just hit trailer just hit theaters for Evil Dead Burn today, and it isn't online yet.
00:41:40
Speaker
I think ah frankly did first of hit at Cinemacon, which is going on right now. What I've heard, what I read online today, and I don't know how reliable this is, so take this with the proverbial grain of salt.
00:41:54
Speaker
The trailer that they showed at Cinemacon is not the trailer. That is in theaters today. Oh, snap. So it really is the so even so even like the leaks from cinena CinemaCon aren't really reliable. Or at least that's what's publicly available. Yeah.
00:42:14
Speaker
so But from what I understand, just from reading online, the basic plot, this is per Wikipedia, again, take it for what it's worth, is that there's a young woman who's visiting her in-laws after her husband is killed in a car accident.
00:42:29
Speaker
And surprise, because this is an Evil Dead movie, there's a mysterious book that is found. And Evil Dead ensues. Oh, i know i know what this book is. It's it's it's The King in Yellow.
00:42:43
Speaker
And I did see, okay, kids, listeners, friends and neighbors, i do not support I do not support illicit recording of anything in a theater. But I did see what is purportedly a theater filming of the trailer from in a theater. And it looked like it was in a theater.
00:43:13
Speaker
the teaser just starts with who I am a so assuming that it is a legitimate copy of the trailer.
00:43:24
Speaker
And this is a, an accurate description of the plot. I presume it is the young woman whose husband was killed and she fought. It opens on her on the floor in a house in terror as behind her. You see somebody just like picking someone up and just massacring them.
00:43:43
Speaker
And she's like trying to crawl through the house in terror as all of this evil dead chaos is going on behind her. And at one point, she's like you know dragging herself across the floor ah next to a dining room table. And like a woman reaches out from under the table and grabs her arm, surprising her. And then the woman who grabbed her gets pulled away from her again. And she makes her way... like next to a staircase or a wall or something and ah you know is sitting there, you know, pulls herself up and is sitting, you know,
00:44:21
Speaker
in terror up against the wall as you just, all of this crap is going on behind her. I want to see this movie. yeah That sounds intense. This, this, this could be the first evil dead movie that I see in the theater. ah If I do see it in theater, I'd probably go with you and I'll probably have my, have my hand over my eyes and saying, is it, ah is can I have an eye zero?
00:44:48
Speaker
And I'll say, yes, and then something horrible will happen. But I am down if we end up doing that. All right, we are in the homestretch. I am thrilled with the way that the Evil Dead franchise has been reinventing itself since that first remake that Fede Alvarez did.

Speculation on Spider-Man: Brand New Day

00:45:08
Speaker
And though speaking of reinvention... We have Spider-Man Brand New Day on July thirty first The fourth entry in the MCU Spider-Man.
00:45:20
Speaker
just have to say, the Spider-Man fan, that ah title. It just gives me the heebie-jeebies. I mean, it could be worse. It could be Spider-Man One More Day.
00:45:31
Speaker
Um... i've I've seen descriptions of the scene that was shown recently. oh i i i am looking forward to this movie.
00:45:43
Speaker
I am trying to get out of the head of trying to figure out who mystery characters are and has anyone been removed from the ninja shot of, I, yeah I feel that that's, that I feel that like, that's the whole, like,
00:46:04
Speaker
it's It's the game they want us to play, but it's like, honestly, I'm more interested in like, what what is the actual like story for Peter Parker? Because it seems like it's going to be digging into a whole lot of different classic stories again. It sounds fun. It does. It it sounds like they're they're taking inspiration from a few different classic stories. um Hopefully one of them that they seem to be hinting at in the most recent trailer that they that they released is drawing inspiration from a different, more classic more classic story as opposed to a more recent one. I would read much rather they do the six-armed Spider-Man story from the 70s than if they do the other, but it looks like it's more heavily root connected to the other.
00:47:00
Speaker
But I can see them using the other two then lead into the six arms. Yeah. And see if... Again, that's not that's not a problem. i be Like, if again, like, whenever people say, like, oh, the MCU is adaptating this story, when have they adapted it straight? And see, personally, I think if anything has been edited out of that shot of him jumping at the ninjas, it's four additional arms.
00:47:28
Speaker
Oh, yeah. And I think that's like ah one people would it fits and it just seems like that's no. you know We might have the flood money.
00:47:40
Speaker
We know what everyone wants it to be. yeah Everyone wants it to be Daredevil. Everyone is expecting it to be Daredevil and the Hulk. And I'm just like, all right, and with with the original removal scene, i could get it. It's like, where's the Hulk fitting in this? Where's in the Jenga, like, like tower are we...
00:48:02
Speaker
the Tetris Tower, we put in the Hulk and then see. I was wondering that too, but they're clearly, I mean, we know Ruffalo is in it as Bruce Banner, and they appear to be inserting Banner into the story to fill the Kurt Connors role from Raimi Spider-Man movies as the scientific
00:48:33
Speaker
professor, teacher and that Peter's going to because there's some sort of genetic problem going on. And the fact that they're both experiencing a sign and a transformation. no Now, the the one bit of speculation that I've seen people throwing around online, and we're not going to turn this into a theory crafting segment, but someone pointed out that In the comics, after Civil War, when they had Doctor Strange, or, yeah, when Doctor Strange, or Mephisto, is the one who restored his secret identity. But if the universe remembers it as Doctor Strange.
00:49:21
Speaker
Mephisto did it. Mephisto orchestrated things orchestraed thing said that Doctor Strange did it. It's convoluted comic stuff. Yeah. But what they've pointed out is that... The only one that remembered that... The only one that remembered was the Hulk, because he was Banner when the spell was cast.
00:49:41
Speaker
and so Which would say, like, well, the Hulk never knew either of that, because the Hulk was stuck inside Banner during Infinity War. But, you know, he's he's been out since.
00:49:55
Speaker
in the ah im I presume that you're talking... his in the MCU. Yeah. We, we got the merged Hulk. I refuse to call him the professor Hulk. We got the merged Hulk in end game who we presume at least as of end game. And when everybody came back was aware, oh Spider-Man is that Peter Parker kid.
00:50:21
Speaker
So it will be interesting to see if they do that. don't know. I don't, I'm not even like that kind of guy, like nitpick on that, it's like, this wasn't really good for me. But I, and honestly, I'm hoping that the Punisher's portion of the movie, I hope that they're highlighting him in the trailer simply to have him be part of what I am expecting to be a montage near the beginning of
00:50:57
Speaker
day-to-day friendly neighborhood Spider-Man stuff. That's what I expected because there's a whole lot of like very minor, ah obscure like little villains throughout the trailer.
00:51:09
Speaker
Like Boomerang and stuff like that. Yeah, Boomerang, Tarantula. And even the... Honestly, it's like... I don't think think they're going to make a big deal. The fact that they introduced the Scorpion here, but they had the Scorpion also in...
00:51:25
Speaker
my ah friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. Two different continuities. Two different continuities. But I'd be like, I don't think he's going to be like a major threat in this one. yeah he know I don't think so. I think it's the end point of the the montage. like The more like the like the mid-level fight.
00:51:47
Speaker
the the The end of the montage that then leads into the main story of the movie. Yeah. So, you know, i i feel that like Daredevil, I mean, Punisher appears during the montage, but his his main contribution to to the plot starts after the scorpion fight and during whatever this weird chase scene is.
00:52:14
Speaker
Yeah. So I feel that he's definitely going to be part of like maybe the initial like first act story, but and maybe come back in the third act. And we we know that this will be after the the Disney Plus Punisher one-shot that's coming, because because that is airing the week after Daredevil Born Again ends, yeah which we're getting close to.
00:52:42
Speaker
I did not expect it to. i They've been in talks about that for like at least two years. it was like I didn't even know they were filming it. I didn't know they were going to be like, oh it's it's right after.
00:52:54
Speaker
Wow. And then finally, the the last thing that we have. is This is the the one that I've been. this is i I've been waiting for this for while.
00:53:09
Speaker
Because we were told it would never be released. I've wanted to see this ever since they told ever since they said the concept.
00:53:19
Speaker
and That is Coyote vs. Acme coming out on August 28th.

Unveiling Coyote vs. Acme

00:53:24
Speaker
It's real and it's coming! the The movie that Warner Brothers shelved along with the Batgirl movie For a tax write-off.
00:53:36
Speaker
Oh, and also an animated Scooby-Doo movie, but who cares about that? And just Wile E. Coyote is suing the Acme Corporation because of all of the devices that have failed him over the years.
00:53:52
Speaker
The greatest is concept for a movie I've ever heard. I love it. And I'm glad that we are going to finally get to see it. I am glad that Coyote vs. Acme will return for Avengers Doomsday.
00:54:10
Speaker
It's like, it's animation fans. It's Looney Tunes fans. It's just fans. It's... like quality people have talked about this has been like in the works for several years yeah it's just if i i want to see it we're not we're not gonna we're not paid by anyone involved with this but i will say this if you want to support support animation and quality filmmaking making i recommend
00:54:42
Speaker
Showing them some support for this one. Yep. i I want to see it because it sounds fun. I want to see it because the story hook is just chef's kiss.
00:54:56
Speaker
And i I want to see it. I want to serve a big middle finger at Warner Bros. Higher ups. See, people wanted to see this.
00:55:08
Speaker
And to give support to the artists, the actors, the writers, everyone behind this project who thought that their whole dream was completely destroyed. Yep.
00:55:20
Speaker
So, again, we're not being at all employed to the show for this movie, but it's like, I don't care who you are, if you if you have a little bit of... e If you can't spend any money on anything else this summer...
00:55:35
Speaker
put it on Coyote versus Acme and just show some real love to some creators. Yep. Those are the things that we are looking for in the theaters or looking forward to in the theaters this summer.
00:55:51
Speaker
And quite a wide quite a wide wide array, lots of different types of things. And we're probably missing some, but these are our picks. Yep. I know that we're missing some. I was going through a list of releases and being like, okay, okay. And I was just trying to pick stuff that was in our wheelhouse.
00:56:09
Speaker
and you like And again, like we tried to be his a day first, but again, like it's a it's an actually good year for movies this year. There's a whole lot going on.
00:56:21
Speaker
Yep. I mean, we just in this list that we've talked about, we've got three that we're planning to do episodes on. We've got Mandalorian and Grogu, we've got Supergirl, and we've got Spider-Man that we're planning to do episodes on. So that is May, June, and July that we have, and then you we're we're going to have episodes on new movies. Although, we got looking looking at our release schedule, the Mandalorian and Grogu episode will be will be hitting, ah it it will not be like the week immediately after, just because of
00:57:00
Speaker
when these movies premiere and when we drop episodes, which I just think is kind of funny, you know, because so Mandalorian and Grogu comes out in May. Our episode will hit in June.
00:57:14
Speaker
Supergirl comes out in June. Our episode will hit in July and Spider-Man comes out in July and our episode will hit in August. Well, we need something to start up off September. We do have Coyote vs. Acne.
00:57:32
Speaker
We'll see if we have enough of our group that is interested in seeing it to make episode out it. We'll definitely have Laura in there. Yes. We'll definitely have the core trio there.
00:57:48
Speaker
Is there anything else that you wanted to mention about the movies that are coming up this summer, Nick?

The Irreplaceable Theater Experience

00:57:55
Speaker
Honestly, I'm just... Movies have had a rough time since since the plague and they continue to have a tough time yeah we you see articles or posts on social media every day about you know movies are dying because and you know people end up complain about prices or whatever and and also like a lot of studios are like especially with animated features
00:58:24
Speaker
especially recently in the news regarding the the Avatar feature film feature film film being moved from theater release and into to streaming. iss like There's been a lot of like issues with like theater films, but they are still a major part.
00:58:46
Speaker
And honestly, I don't think as much as we truly try to businesses trying to like remove that. There's nothing that beats sitting in a seat in a crowded theater, popcorn, and overpriced soda in hand. yeah Having a good time.
00:59:04
Speaker
And experiencing the reaction with a theater full of people. Yeah. i mean is There's no like comedy, horror, action, in a group.
00:59:17
Speaker
in a group Yeah, you can experience that at home, but not everyone can have a place where you can experience that at home. and Well, ah I don't think I've told this these stories here on the show, but the first time that I saw the first Avengers movie, I not only saw it in a theater opening night,
00:59:40
Speaker
but I saw it in a theater on opening night in a screening hosted by my comic book store. So it was full of comic book fans.
00:59:52
Speaker
And, you know just the, the moments where, where you were supposed to cheer, everybody was so into it. And, know, I will tell you that scene near the end in Avengers tower yeah where, where the Hulk beats Loki around like a rag doll.
01:00:12
Speaker
I knew the Hulk said something, but I had to go home and look up online what he said because the crowd was cheering and laughing so loudly. I couldn't hear Hulk's line.
01:00:27
Speaker
have something, that I have something similar to say as well. Like, I also saw... I went from... I was in college, and it was our last day of our first semester in college.
01:00:42
Speaker
Me and my friend, Christoph. Shouting, yeah, Christoph. like We went immediately after our after our tests to see the first event in his movie.
01:00:55
Speaker
He was not a comic book fan, but Throughout high school, we'd be going to see Marvel movies because he wanted my input on everything. And we watched it. It was amazing.
01:01:06
Speaker
And then the end credit scene with Thanos showed up. And everyone in the theater was screaming. is like and I looked at them, that's Thanos! they was like, that's cool, Nick.
01:01:19
Speaker
Who's a Thanos? Who? it' was like but yeah you you yeah i pointed It was like, oh, like, oh, Jesse Wade, he's got to be really important.
01:01:30
Speaker
Well, even better than that, I also saw Avengers Endgame for the first time had a screening for the same comic store.
01:01:42
Speaker
oh Oh, nice. And so there were two moments that I still remember. when Thanos is starting to drive Stormbreaker into Thor's chest, and it cut back to that close-up of Mjolnir laying on the ground. And I was like, Cap is going And it slowly rises, and you see it hit Thanos and fly back, and Cap catches it.
01:02:16
Speaker
the audience went insane. Oh, same in my audience. And then even more so when, know, Captain America is battered and beaten and tightens his shield to face Thanos. And then you hear that, you know, cap on your left. and the first portal opens everybody started cheering and the you could feel the excitement in the theater building and building throughout the portal scene like and then every oh felt so good these years
01:02:57
Speaker
and then as soon as you after all these years of being teased, and you finally hear him say, Avengers, assemble, we all lost our collective minds.
01:03:14
Speaker
And you don't have you you can't have that same sort of experience at home. you even it's it's It truly was like a transcendent moment. It's like, the closest I could think that we could ever maybe have is maybe...
01:03:32
Speaker
Maybe later this year, maybe during some sort of day. I'm not sure what kind of day. You mean a doomsday? Actually, so this this isn't summer movies, but a slight tangent here.
01:03:47
Speaker
I've been having a conversation with someone online today, and it's actually been respectful. Imagine that. am A respectful online discourse. In 2026, Year of Our Lord. yes Yes. and Now, it did you feed off of a grognards rage bait post where ah talking about how ah Warner Brothers needs to move Dune Part 3 because Avengers Doomsday is going to kick its ass at the box office.
01:04:21
Speaker
And there's no way that Disney would move Doomsday because at CinemaCon, Kevin Feige said, no, we're not changing the date. We're still releasing on December 18th.
01:04:32
Speaker
The only thing that we that we've been allowed to hear about it is that, yes, it's still coming out on the 18th. But here's the thing. This guy said, and this is not the person that I've been having the discourse with.
01:04:45
Speaker
But um he said, you know, there's no way that Disney Marvel would would move it. Well, Disney Marvel did move it. They moved it from ah from May.
01:04:57
Speaker
They moved it from May 1st to December eighteenth Yeah. And Dune Part 3 had already been slotted into December 18th.
01:05:14
Speaker
So Marvel knowingly picked a release date that another big movie that has a lot of audience crossover was already scheduled for.
01:05:28
Speaker
In bold, you'd assume that I'm not going to just sneak into the theater after. I mean, i'm I'm going to take the day off and go see both of them. that That's all there is to it. I'm going to take the day off and go see both of them.
01:05:41
Speaker
Oh, I was just going to make crime by going into the next theater. Well, that's harder to do when you have assigned seats and it's a movie that is likely to be sold out, Nick.
01:05:51
Speaker
yeah um So, crime? Boy, I don't know. But the the reasonable discourse that we were having was that, and and we finally came to the conclusion that it's a bizarre counterintuitive marketing choice that it seems like either Marvel is counting on people wanting to see both badly enough that they that they go to see both, or somebody at Marvel Marketing
01:06:26
Speaker
is desperately trying to make fetch happen. Somebody at Marvel Marketing is desperately trying to manufacture the same kind of zeitgeist,
01:06:39
Speaker
ah once-in-a-lifetime movie-going zeitgeist that occurred with Barbie and Oppenheimer. They're trying to make Doon's Day.
01:06:51
Speaker
Yes, yes, they're trying to manufacture that when that was a totally organic event that came out of two movies that had on its face... The previous thing that happened...
01:07:04
Speaker
Before that was at two fo in 2020 when Doom Eternal came out with Animal Crossing, which became Dune Crossing. But, you know, it's... You can you can't manufacture it. it although And again, they want it to be Dune's Day. If it does happen, I'm calling it Dune Doom.
01:07:26
Speaker
But, you know... Because that sounds silly. I'm looking forward to both.

Dune Part 3 vs. Avengers Doomsday Box Office Battle

01:07:31
Speaker
Stephanie and I have both agreed. We're both going to take the day off and we're just going to go see both because we can do that.
