Speaker: Yes, indeed. It is going to be an amazing time. Happy opening day to everybody. One of the most glorious days of the year. And I have a glorious panel joining me today. Speaker: Lots of storylines. So first of all, Let's start with, I'm just going to throw some storylines out there. And I want everyone to start with what is their storyline going into this season out of the major ones that I'm about to say. So first of all, we know we just came from the World Baseball Classic. You are allowed to talk about that if you want. Venezuela was the champion. Someone may want to talk about Mark DeRosa's bad USA decisions. I don't know. I'll leave that up to anyone here, but that's there. Venezuela, congratulations to be the champion.
Speaker: Amul, this may be the one you actually touch on, as you like to touch on this a lot, as you are a a law student, a law professional. Labor battles. We are expecting disagreement at the end of the year.
Speaker: ah We saw what happened with the WNBA, Avril. You know, me and you have talked about that. This could come MLB and be honest. the wrong time instead.
Speaker: Also, AP, maybe this is something you want to talk about. Have and have nots. Where are the Dodgers on the scale of can we keep letting Dodgers and Mets and teams like that continue to spend at an amount that may, and you know, this has been going along on a long time. It's not like it's anything new. but actually end up hurting in the long run. What else do we have? ABS.

Speaker: He had that wild pitch against Venezuela. and I'm just happy that it's now regular baseball season because he pitches for the Red Sox. So let's go.
Speaker: let's go Well, yeah ah he pitches for my Mets, and that's okay. As a New York fan, I know you hate the Mets so much that you wouldn't think about that. But tell me more about the World Baseball Classroom. I know it's one of the two. um ra Roman is the other one. He's the other rookie to watch, and he's on the Red Sox. on Yeah. um No, you're good. We'll get the Rookie of the Year. But I do want to follow up and ask you question. Oh, no, no, no. no So with McLean –

Speaker: I don't blame Scooboo. I understand what he did. I respect him. And after watching Webb last night and skiing today,
Speaker: ah Yeah, I'm glad that Scoogle said, nope, I'm pitching this game, and then I'm going back to my team. He did the correct thing. On my season. Okay. All right. Not as a starting pitcher.
Speaker: ah Yeah. No. I kind of throw blame on DeRosa, too, because he yeah he did not manage that game well he did not manage that game well. He didn't manage the whole World Baseball Classic well. He didn't even know the rules about them being eliminated. Yeah.
Speaker: no he didn't he didn't know the rules he didn't know the challenges he had left what was he doing as the manager of usa like who picked him can i just ask that who picked him because you have so many you have kona you have uh wow you have other managers who are far tons of experience tons of managers who who are far more experienced thank you that you know would be a would have been a better fit It's not even that. It's like he he went into it like it was an exhibition game and the players went into it like it's the World Series.
Speaker: Right. Yes. OK. Because it was. And that's not fair because they actually they actually wanted this like. They did. Bad. Yeah. They wanted it bad. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker: I mean, with their espresso dances, like, I mean, that was hilarious. That was great. But, like, they they every other team wanted it more, seemingly. than the I mean, I guess the USA team didn't want it a little bit, maybe 15%.
Speaker: But they didn't want it the same way everyone else did. so well I also think, again, Mark DeRosa hampered them a little bit. And I also because and also think they had luck on their side. They should have never, AP, got past Dominican Republic on that strike call at the end of the game.
Speaker: Mm-hmm. sure and and And also the U.S. side is like it still kind of treats it like a business still, whereas you have teams protect your investments you have teams like the Dominican, you have teams like Venezuela.
Speaker: This is their life. This is their culture. that's all those who For those who do not know Latin culture, baseball is like okay is life for some of these guys. And this is this is something they love to do. This is something that they love to participate in. You can Half did the the Hispanic players, because of visa purposes, were upset that they couldn't participate in this event.
Speaker: wow It's just the Hispanic players want it more. Obviously, the Japanese players want it more because they have such a strong team as well. um Again, as long as the US continues to treat it like a business, I don't think they're going to ever be successful in the WBC.
Speaker: Because like you said, a all other teams just want it more. They're not gonna take it with the serious as the grava a gravitas that they need to. Even Derek Jeter, who isn't even playing. Like you're an announcer. Stop talking. Like I realize that's tough to do, but like to say that, okay, it's better to be in the World Series than to be in the WBC. I don't recall him ever playing in the WBC.
Speaker: So how is he qualified to make that, you know? They didn't have it then. Yeah, they didn't have it then. So, you know, in that regard, maybe maybe jeans should just you know sit down and i don't know wear one of poppy's t-shirts or something that he likes to give away that one is there you go ap what's your storyline for this upcoming season i mean there's a lot you can go through as far as you know what what to choose i mean we're going to talk about the dodgers anyway so we might as well throw it out there
Speaker: This is this. ah People are are saying that this is a dynasty. They're already a dynasty because we forget they won a World Series in 2020. Say what you want about the COVID here. But and they've already won ah won a World Series in 2020. They've won the last two.
Speaker: That doesn't mean they're invincible. That doesn't mean the three-peat is guaranteed by any stretch of the means. Because if you remember in 2023, they won over 100 games but got bounced in the wild card by the Arizona Diamondbacks. So. back They can get beat. Any team, it doesn't matter if you're the number one seed. doesn't matter if you're wild card team.
Speaker: Once October hits, it's a whole different ball game. And it is so tough to repeat as as a 3P champion. I mean, the last team to do it was the Yankees in the in the the late 90s and two thousand so um So let me follow up on that with you then.
Speaker: Do you think that the fact that we, okay, even an easier question, people are talking about salary caps. What do you think about an MLB instituting a salary cap?
Speaker: Honestly, I think it's going to be detrimental to the league. I think it's going to be more detrimental than anything because it's just going to cause so much financial chaos in Major League Baseball that it's not going to be sustainable, especially when you have a strike season coming.
Speaker: That's not going to be good at all. um And people are like, well, why why why how do we stop these teams from – People don't understand there are ways that these lesser teams have been able to win games.
Speaker: I mean, we've seen the Tampa Bay Rays of all teams who have literally no financial gain very true go to the World Series twice. Hell, this team right here has no financial gain. They won a World Series three years ago. That's true. Very true.
Speaker: So the Washington Nationals, another team that won a World Series recently. yeah just because a team spends all the money all of it and yankees fans now do you think those are outliers do you think that's outliers that have come ever i mean that that's what the that's like what they want to paint it as it's like if you spend the most money you're going have the most success but unfortunately omar you know you know well your mets have spent a lot of money and they haven't done squat so i do i mean and and it's kind of the same with the yankees here recently they've spent a lot of money but you know the
Speaker: you get to the ALCS and not have any success. yeah So t just because you spend a lot of money doesn't mean you're always going to have success. It's only being talked about because it's the Dodgers.
Speaker: It's it that they've won the last two world series and it's the, it's the culture we live in where people are, don't, they don't like seeing success. We don't, people in this day and age don't like seeing success. So when we see the teams like the Dodgers or teams like the Yankees,
Speaker: or whoever went back to back World Series, its it it puts a sour taste in people's minds. Now, should it is it success or is it repeated success?
Speaker: that it should It's probably repeated success because if you look at the NFL, it's the same thing with the Chiefs. It was the same thing with the Patriots. it's It's the repeated success and people, well, everybody thinks parity is good for the league.
Speaker: In some cases, it's not really. I mean, it's great to see, you know, yeah it's great to see some of these teams win every once in a while. It's great to see some of these up and coming teams like How great was it seeing the Cubs win a World Series for the first time in 100 years? That was one of the most must-see things. so um That was fabulous.
Speaker: has teams Teams are going to look like and and and commissioners are going to look at what brings in the most profit. What matchup do we want in the postseason? And right now, what brings Major League Baseball the most profit is the l L.A. Dodgers, unfortunately. Yep.
Speaker: Yep, and Shohei Otani. Amul, I know you were like law. Are you going to tell me about the labor update? What are you talking about? I mean, I can't. My headline was going to be about breaking up the Dodgers. That's fine. You can talk about both. Go ahead. Yeah, AP took that a little bit. But I'll start with the labor side of humans.
Speaker: So, in my view, Manfred needs to take this more seriously. I saw an interview. i'm sure we all saw it. I'll raise the hands real quick. Is Manfred the worst commissioner in sports?
Speaker: i mean a current The current one? Out of all four big sports, is he the worst commissioner? Out of hockey, basketball, football, and baseball, is he the worst? Betman's gotten better, so I'm going to ahead and raise hand. Betman much better now in hockey. Yeah. And even Goodell is better, too, in football. Yeah.
Speaker: I still say it's Adam Silver. wa I don't like these. I don't. Even though my team won the NBA team last year, I hate the NBA product as a whole. He's bringing basketball back to Seattle with the expansion.
Speaker: even given a truth yeah Screw Seattle. You couldn't handle your team getting taken away. but to crime That was yeah that was like like the same kind of owner that Oakland's got.
Speaker: Fair enough. So I'm going to take it one step past APs. I'm going to say Kathy. Kathy got to go. She is the worst. yes Oh, yes. Kathy is the so Okay. That's fair. Yeah. It's between Kathy Manfred. I'm going to have to keep him.
Speaker: Kathy got to go. And and note ah ah notice Manfred didn't reinstate Pete Rose until, one, he was already passed, and two, it's at the very end of his term. So he's basically leaving it for whoever takes takes on the mantle next. I mean, you know what? I didn't put WNB up there, but Kathy Engelbert, by far, you're the worst. You said basketball. You didn't specify. You said basketball. And it's basketball. And that's why I brought you on, because smart you are. Amul, continue on. Can we get a total side note? We can discuss this later. But since Jerome powell and Powell's term is ending, Can we get him to run baseball after Manfred is done? We're not doing politics right now. we Me and you. I know. I know. no no, no, no. Speaker: And now we begin the show, ladies and gentlemen, of of the guests carrying his podcast. um This is a tradition, by the way. So I would say this, that Manfred said yesterday in his interview that he just, he was kind of like, yeah, I'm looking forward to the season. and Nothing about labor side agreements, nothing about things that actually matter. We're facing like, ah you know, not only a shortage, but also the fact that we're going to have a strike next year. So ah there was no talk of that whatsoever.
Speaker: He should have gotten it done. He should have said that immediately and talked about it because you know that's the most important thing. We're going to face no baseball in 27. AP, what do you think? No baseball in 28? Avril, how long do you think the do you think the the strike last?
Speaker: You guys there? um So i hope that they don't strike. Okay. Because I need baseball in my life. But.
Speaker: Well, they're definitely goingnna strike. I think we can all. if it had If it happens, I hope it doesn't go longer than a year. I don't know if I can go more than a year without baseball. I mean, to be a completely completely honest though, Avril, and I agree with you completely, it shouldn't happen at all because we will remember what happened. Well, AP, you're too young. And Avril, I think you may be too young too. But me and Amur. I was going to bring this up. Do you remember the strike of 94? Yep. And two years. I was younger. I remember it but I was younger.
Speaker: It took almost two years for for all fans to come back. Maybe three, Omar. And and what did it take? yeah It took Sammy Sosa and Mark McGuire to bring everyone back. to yeah home runs yeah Because shakes dig the long ball, as Nike once told.
Speaker: By the way, let's move on to another subject. Last night, Netflix's debut of Major League Baseball. First of all, shopy most most most baseball fans and and most every person that wanted to see baseball on opening day had no clue Netflix was the one promoting the game.
Speaker: no um and And then they had these cavalcade of stars, including Barry Bonds' high-voiced ass. Yeah, we know why, sir. um Also, you had Jameis Winston. God bless him. I love Jameis Winston. And I know you play baseball, and I know you're fun to watch, a joy to watch.
Speaker: But does he belong on baseball? To me, it's seen by Netflix. Yes, hoor only didn yes. Yes, he absolutely did. You will not slander his name. No, not today. little not Let the man have some work, sir Let me finish the question. I love Jameis. What I'm going to say is, though, how how was everything so fragmented in Netflix's production of opening day game? You had all these different entities, all these different elements that completely contrasted each other.
Speaker: Did anyone else see this or am I the only one that saw it? Okay, so let me go for Let me go first. Let me go first. i'm say i mean um So was it cheesy as hell? Yes, it was. It absolutely was.
Speaker: To an avid baseball watching fan, it was cheesy as hell. To mascots and dancers on the trolley, by the way. And the New York cab. They had dancers and mascots on the New York cab and the trolley. What are we doing? Is this baseball or is this the bad buddy? Let It was cheesy, yes.
Speaker: But with that being said, let's be real. Everybody that watches baseball, I don't care what service it's on, It's opening day, opening night. If you're a baseball fan, you're going to watch.
Speaker: That's a given. It was put on Netflix to bring, if you if you normally if you normally watch baseball, you're going to watch baseball on whatever service it's on. You're just going figure out how to watch it.
Speaker: That's true. that All that extra stuff was not for us.
Speaker: They are trying to make baseball more TV friendly. which is why hate pitch clock. Games are too long. um I mean, I thoroughly enjoy turning on the game, and being able to take a nap, wake up, and it's only the seventh inning.
Speaker: I miss that. I love my entire day being taken away from my baseball. So with that being said,
Speaker: and they're trying to bring people back into loving baseball. That's why I was on Netflix. That's why I had all the cheesy stuff that didn't match. It was to bring in different demographics. So they had a little bit of something for everybody.
Speaker: Was it cheesy? Yes, but it was what baseball needed because you just brought in a whole new demographic that Even if they have T-Mobile, they're not going to sign up for the free MLB TV.
Speaker: They're not. Yeah. But it's on Netflix and it's free and it's right there. It's been in our face. As soon as you open Netflix, that's a whole new demographic that they're trying to bring in into baseball. So do I like what it represented and what it stood for and what it could mean in the future?
Speaker: Yes, I absolutely loved it. But was it cheesy? Absolutely. And it's too promotional. Oh my God. I can't wait until he's done playing so that he can actually do announcing full time because, Oh, it's going to be great.
Speaker: It's going to be great. By the way, Netflix's price just went up today. So of course, Netflix again, Yep, it went up again. And look, if i I see one more Stranger Things freaking promo, like this is what Netflix does.
Speaker: They buy these sports to promote Stranger Things and all these other shows. Look what they did with WWE Raw. They bought Raw, and then the first thing they did was a Stranger Things episode. Like, what are we doing right now? But I guess the good part about that is you got Jey Uso yeeting at the opening day game. Like, what is – What do these things have to do with each other?
Speaker: Nothing. I too did. i too did. I heard the MLB network guys or guys and gals like the the announcers and was just like, who so is this MLB network or is this Netflix? Like, oh, I didn't realize that they were being contracted out. Okay. So that's, that's how we're doing this. Okay. Yeah. I can't wait until he turns heel. I'm done with the yeeties. No, man. Hey, Jay Uso's everywhere. i I literally turned on a game last week. I got NBA League Pass, and I turned on the the Pistons and and Rockets game on League Pass. And during halftime in Detroit, Jay Uso was doing the yeet. I was like, what are we doing in life? Like, how is he all over? They didn't even know who he was at the Pistons game. They were like, we don't even know who this is. but the music is cool yeah and we're going to eat. We're going to eat. The yeet is this generation's Macarena. I'm just going to say
Speaker: I'm just going to say it. The yeet is this generation's Macarena. That's all I'm going to say. Pretty much. I will say this though. Whatever hell they showed, it was way better than what they have on Apple TV.
Speaker: Apple TV is awful. I hate Apple TV's production of Major League Baseball. The one thing I like more about Apple TV is that they showed a lot of statistics. They showed a lot of like, um you know...
Speaker: ready I like that you can do the radio. You can dial into the local radio broadcast and Apple TV. That was the only reason I liked it. That is the only good benefit from it. That is the only good benefit. Yeah. they need If they're really serious about doing production for Major League Baseball, they need better commentary. They need better production. They need but need better shows general.
Speaker: Because the the production of Major League Baseball on Apple TV is horrendous. Aside from, like you said, as ah aside like you said more other than the radio broadcast. I mean, apparently the and MLB Network people are available, so just have them ah you know sinokica have them do Apple TV broadcasts too.
Speaker: They're not going to be doing Netflix all the time. so So depending on the game, because it's not every game, but depending on the game, um on and MLB TV at least... Two seasons ago I could do this. You can catch some of the radio broadcasts.
Speaker: Like you can um you can watch the the regular streaming, but then you can change the um broadcast to the radio. That's how I used to watch, um listen to John.
Speaker: I don't think you can do it. like i was I was streaming a couple games today, including the Mets just, you know. telling paul skeins and it's not it's not every game i know it's not every game but every once in a while you can catch them yeah i couldn't i couldn't find it today and then i when i switched over to the red sox game i still couldn't find it so i think for the moment they've sort of disabled that feature but maybe they'll bring it back Or maybe I just didn't. hopeful i'm I'm kind of excited to see what Peacock and NBC do with baseball here. i think the first first game is was actually today. the The Pirates game was on NBC, but you've also got the Peacock game tonight. I'm kind of excited to see.
Speaker: how they how they do sunday night baseball this year by the way peacock i have a problem with you okay and april i know you're not going to want to hear this and i apologize in advance uh i am not a fan of musicals okay So when and I don't know if you are either, but you may be a maybe a mood. Y'all may be fans of this, too. I am not.
Speaker: All I know is once I watched my met blow out the pirates, I started cleaning up my apartment. Wanted to make sure I got a little tidy before the show went on. And I was starting. I started hearing some singing.
Speaker: And I said, man, what is that singing going on? where Is that coming from Broadway? Because, you know, I live right by Broadway, so I got all the music going on out my window. And I was like, nah, man, that sounds like some some kind of musical.
Speaker: And all of a sudden, I look up, and I see Wicked on my screen playing in the full-length movie. Peacock, I am not your target demographic. I do not want to watch a peacock.
Speaker: No, do not blame that on Peacock. That is your algorithm because I am a fan of Broadway, a huge fan of Broadway. And Wicked doesn't just start playing as as many musicals as I watch and Broadway shows as I watch.
Speaker: Wicked does not just start playing. Well, this is you know, school.
Speaker: first and for foremost ladies and gentlemen i'm pretty sure he like seventeen seventy six when he when we were in high school and then well before that the outsiders you know when we were i love the dope Don't go there and say you don't like musicals, sir.
Speaker: like Don't say that you're into Hamilton. You saw Hamilton. i but Only because the lead is Puerto Rican. By the way, ah what do y'all think? i was thinking about going I was thinking about dyeing my hair blonde like Ponyboy. Yeah, I would do it.

We're starting the NL.
Speaker: Major League Baseball, National League West. Obviously, the Dodgers are the favorite here. So let me go ahead and just kind of break this down.
Speaker: Dodgers are on their quest for the three-peat. As we know, we'll see if that happens or not. They are the favorites in the division as we're going into it. But obviously, you also have the Padres, obviously always trying to spend a lot of money there. So let's bounce through some things real quick, and then y'all can pick your division winners.
Speaker: um So first, we don't need to go to the Los Angeles Dodgers. We know they spend a lot of money. They got Shohei, the best baseball player on earth. They ah they got Mookie Betts. They got Freddie Freeman. They won the past two titles.
Speaker: Let's move on to the San Diego Padres. They are the second team here. They may have a chance to win this division. Last year, they were 90 and 72. Not shabby at all.
Speaker: They made good additions this offseason as well. The other teams, we can talk about them if they want, but I'm only going to mention the favorites.
Speaker: But if you think that there's an underdog that could supplant one of those two, please go right ahead. We will start with you, Averill.
Speaker: If Webb can come back to form. San Francisco, okay. The Giants might be a ah silent contender in that division.
Speaker: Ball cart team, you're talking? Right? No, just just a silent sleeper. I mean, they they they may surprise you, but they Webb has got to...
Speaker: He has to go back to his regular form. So I guess, what do you think about this? Because I think last night, this kind of, and it wasn't very pronounced, but we have to remember that they have a new rookie manager in Tony Vitello, who came from the collegiate ranks.
Speaker: How do you think that affects them, Averill, in this upcoming season, the the Giants?
Speaker: Cause we haven't seen that many collegiate managers get hired to the big leagues. I don't even know. what i don't I don't even know what to expect with that because it's, you don't really see it. Hmm.

If Zach Gallin can find his footing again in that pitching rotation, I think the Diamondbacks are going to challenge the Dodgers for the West. I still have the Dodgers winning the West. I still have the Dodgers winning the West, but I think that that the the only team that can potentially challenge the Dodgers in the West is the Arizona Diamondbacks. I'm not sold on the Padres. I think they're going to fall off, and I think the Giants are going to be awful this year.

Speaker: But when I was down in Fort Myers, like the the people that I spoke to consistently said, hey, we'll we'll go to games, but it's just the game. That's it. There isn't anything else going on in the in the ballpark. there There isn't anything fun.
Speaker: there i i think the age range, the guy told me that I spoke with, that was speaking with, the age range of those attending were like, you know, in their seventies or late sixties, early seventies. Like, like, and this is down in Florida because like, it's just, it just doesn't capture what baseball should be. So I don't know if the owners, I would like the owners to sell, but I don't think that'll happen.
Speaker: It's what I'm saying. um I do think the Tigers will have a decent year, probably not as good as they did last year, because in my view, you can't ride Scoobo the whole time. You just can't.
Speaker: There's a reason why, you know, other teams have fortified behind their ah their number one pitcher. And the Tigers have too, but not to the extent that they should have.
Speaker: you know To go ahead and say, okay, well, I'm not going to sign you to a long-term deal. I'm only going to take the one year and that's it. Don't do that to your to your number one pitcher. Don't do that because he's going to leave. He'll probably leave for the Yankees or he'll go somewhere else or the Mets, wherever he wants to go.

Speaker: Are your Texas Rangers going to win this division or is it the favorite Seattle Mariners? What a freaking juggernaut they got there in Seattle. I'm going to say this. Cal Raleigh's not going to hit 60 home runs again this year. No, we will not. i don't think he will.
Speaker: We will not. Losing in Eugenio is going to be huge for them because he was such a backbreaker, especially in this rotation. I'm not sold on Naylor being the the cleanup hitter.
Speaker: okay I don't think i don't i don't think that Julio's going to find his stride like he did last year. I think he's going to go back to what he was two years ago. They have Luis Castillo fourth in this rotation.
Speaker: There's something wrong with Castillo right now. They did not have him start opening day. They they have him fourth in the rotation. There's something going on with that. And this is history, guys.
Speaker: Every time the Mariners have a great year, they fall off. the following year okay the Astros are going to be terrible this year I feel they're not going be as bad as the Angels even though they lost to the Angels today but I still don't I I do not have uh the Astros being competitive in the West top to bottom The best roster in this in this division is the Tech Rangers.
