Exploring Gojo's Past in Hidden Inventory Arc

00:00:01
Speaker
On another exciting episode of the Animation Deliberation Podcast, we are going back into Gojo's past as we cover Hidden Inventory 2. That's right, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 2 continues on Crunchyroll and we're going to talk about it right through these ads. We have no control over. Sing along if you know the words. 1, 2, 3. It's time for animation, deliberation, a conversation, and a celebration of a favorite action animated series. Yeah.

Introducing Trevor: Avoiding Solo Commentary

00:00:28
Speaker
Welcome back to another episode of Animation Deliberation, the podcast where we take action animation and cartoon seriously, but not too seriously. I'm your host, Suhara Lee, and I wanted to spare you the torture of having to listen to me talk to myself about an episode again, so I brought on a friend to chat with me today, and I am not gonna butcher his name like I usually do because he was kind enough to join me at the last minute. Trevor, how you doing, bud? Hi! Oh my god, it feels so weird to not be introduced as Travar. It's honestly an honor.
00:00:57
Speaker
We'll see how you do this episode. And then if I bring you back in the future, you know, your your destiny is up to you at this point. I will do everything in my power not to screw the pooch.
00:01:11
Speaker
Well, this is your first time on the show, and like I said, we're covering the hidden inventory arc of Jujutsu Kaisen.

Gojo's Mission and Gato's Assistance

00:01:17
Speaker
This is part of Gojo's past when he was a student, and where we left off, he has this mission of protecting this vessel for Tengen along with Gato. But before we go into this episode, to let the fans know you're kind of like
00:01:39
Speaker
Relation to the show I guess what got you into it. Did you bend it? Did you watch on a weekly basis?

Trevor's Journey into Jujutsu Kaisen

00:01:46
Speaker
Did you watch the movie first like I did or were you normal person and watch the show first and like if you were to give it a 1 to 5 rating 5 being one of the most incredible things you've ever seen How do you put this anime in your opinion?
00:02:02
Speaker
All right, I'm not going to do all of those at once right off the top of the dome. OK, do you watch the show first or movie first? I watch the show first, for sure. Did you watch it weekly or did you binge it? I binged it. I remember what was I think someone did an edit of the of the ending of the of the first season. And I was like, man,
00:02:27
Speaker
That ending slaps, I have to find out where it's from. And then I found out it was from Jujitsu Kaisen. I was like, well, I guess I have to watch it. So did that whole show live up to the hype of that mashup that you saw? Oh, my God, was it so good. I was I was I was I was I was underprepared. OK.

Suhara's Theatrical Experience with Jujutsu Kaisen

00:02:49
Speaker
Yeah, this is definitely a show that I've been hearing a lot about and people telling me to watch it. I'm just like, I'll get to it. I'll get to it. And then when the movie hit theaters and I was told that it was a prequel movie, I was like, you know what? Let me just go watch this. If it's a prequel, maybe too much one could spoil it. If I don't like the movie, I'm not going to waste my time with the show.
00:03:11
Speaker
So I had the pleasure of watching that movie in theaters and I was like, oh my God, this is incredible. Why did I wait so long?

Gato's Character Analysis: Movie vs Show

00:03:17
Speaker
And then binge the series like the week after that. Yeah, I love the movie. I thought, I don't know how to pronounce his name properly. Gato? Gato. I was going to say ghetto.
00:03:30
Speaker
Gato fucking met that man. I love him so much but the movie him and and Show him are so different now that I'm it has me. I have no idea what we're getting into in terms of the show but oh man, I loved him I loved him in the movie and To get back in together's past and see him. Oh my goodness. I love this boy
00:03:56
Speaker
Yeah, it's interesting how we've been going backwards since the first season. We went from the current timeline to before Itadori was ever a cursed user to when Gojo was still a student.

Jujutsu Kaisen Timeline and Character Evolution

00:04:13
Speaker
So it's like, as much as I'm enjoying this stuff, I'm excited to kind of get back to the cream of the crop of all the characters that we do have.
00:04:20
Speaker
But it is interesting seeing all these perspectives because I'm not mistaken. I think the movie was the first time we ever saw Gato's powers at all. I don't think he ever fought. He was just sending out his minions in season one. Yeah, I guess so, huh? I wasn't even thinking about him. It's been so long since season one. I haven't even seen it in so long. But I only remember him from the movie. Oh, okay. Was he in season one? I thought he died in the movie.
00:04:50
Speaker
Yeah, so in Season 2, he has a scar across his head, like the other special grade, the one that can manipulate souls. So it's like, did he get his face reattached? Is there something else going on underneath there?

Unanswered Mysteries: Gojo and Gato

00:05:07
Speaker
What's the story? There's still a lot of mysteries based off of Season 1 in the movie, which is why it's just like,
00:05:13
Speaker
We got three more episodes of, like, Gojo's past. I want to know, like, where did the breakup happen? What's going on with him being alive? Like, I don't read the manga. And thankfully, we have some awesome listeners of the show who don't spoil anything from the manga. And there's a few people who just get, like, really interested in hearing our reactions. But there's a lot of questions in mystery with the show that I anxiously want answers to. Yeah, same. I think I think I think what was it when
00:05:41
Speaker
season two first dropped and I first found out I was like hey have you seen it yet and then as soon as you texted me that you had I was like hey these guys are so different than the movie what's going on yeah I kind of gave a first off I'm so sorry to all the listeners ears
00:06:06
Speaker
second yeah i'd let um i put that as a disclaimer because a lot of people messaged me not knowing that these first few episodes were going to be in the past so they were like why does gojo look so different who is all these people like what's going on where did the dory go it's like not sure he's born yet if so he's a child
00:06:25
Speaker
Oh, I had no idea this was in the past until like, um, until both, um, until both Gojo and ghetto were both in the same like area together. Like as friends, I was like, huh, that's weird. Huh? Oh, all right.

Episode 2 Synopsis: Hidden Inventory 2

00:06:43
Speaker
Well, that being said, I'm going to get to the synopsis of this episode and then we can go and start talking about it. And then if you have any like points from episode one that you want to mention, we can talk about that too. But.
00:06:55
Speaker
the whole, all of episode one needs to be mentioned. I don't think that's fair. I mean, there was an episode last week, but yeah, synopsis for season two, episode two, hidden inventory, too. Gojo and Geito easily dispose of the Q attackers and after she wakes up from her unconsciousness, are formally introduced to Riko and her maid, Misato Kuroi.
00:07:20
Speaker
Crowy. Despite wanting to take her to Jujutsu High for safety, Rika goes to school for the day with Tengen ordering Gojo and Gato to follow her wishes. As they are aware, even though she is content with her fate, she will no longer have a normal life once she is assimilated with Tengen.
00:07:36
Speaker
Meanwhile, knowing he has no chance of currently facing Gojo, Toji decides to wait and let the attackers tire them down first, adding further fuel to the fire by putting 300 million yen bounty on Riko's head.

Gojo's Powers in Action

00:07:49
Speaker
Gato and Kuroi face off against cursed users of the school, while Gojo grabs Riko before being cornered by a cursed user able to create clones of himself.
00:07:58
Speaker
Using the power of his six eyes and limitless, Gojo is able to overwhelm and defeat the user, even after he fails to execute his reverse curse technique. Just then, Riko receives a text message of Kurui tied up and captured.
00:08:18
Speaker
Before we get to that point, before we get to that point, before we get to that point, I do want to say that I was a little disappointed at the beginning of this episode because I thought episode one was very build up and that we were going to start off with some serious action in this one, like we're just getting straight to the point. So I was a little disappointed that it was wrapped up so quickly.
00:08:41
Speaker
And by so quickly, I mean, it started off with like the fight just being over as much as even. But I think they made up for it a little bit with the comedy, especially like when you can see on Gato's phone that Gojo sent a selfie of like it with the peace sign. It's like tied up and just beat to shit in the background. So the humor is definitely great in this, but it's like
00:09:07
Speaker
I just I just I just want I want more action like they do such a good job at animating fight scenes that it's like quit critezing me with it just let me have it okay but let me hit you with this when when the girl is like giving her big speech about how she's gonna be tanking and everything and they're both like oh hey did you get any wallpaper
00:09:29
Speaker
These are my favorite dumbasses. I love these guys. I was not expecting that personality from Rico. I thought she was just kind of like, this is my fate, like whatever, I belong to Tenga and she was like, nah, this is going to be awesome because he's going to be me too. See, from the way that she's been like, the way that she reacts when she's like in school and whatever, and she's like, realizing like, I'm never going to have my friends again, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
00:10:00
Speaker
Nah, that doesn't hurt. You're fine. I feel like she's just drilled that idea into her head. It's not her only way to cope. And that's her way of coping with it. Yeah. Which is sad. I definitely love the way that Gojo came in and embarrassed her. And then all the girls in the fuse just fell in love with them right away.

Humor and Gojo's Conceit

00:10:20
Speaker
And then the teacher is like, here's my number. And then they're all like, you're no better than us, you skank. And she's like, it is hard to meet people in this profession.
00:10:21
Speaker
I think that's a front she's putting on. You know when you're told...
00:10:30
Speaker
This mofo just takes off his glasses and starts posing for everybody. He's so...he's so conceited, like... He's so extra. I need...I need to face off with him and Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man at this point. Just like a charisma off. I'm not sure who would win. I want him with Armstrong from Full Metal Alchemist. Oh Jesus.
00:10:58
Speaker
I want them in an audacity off. I think I would have to give it to Gojo on that. But the Armstrong family's secrets! I haven't watched FMA in a while, but man that was such a good show. So good. The action that I did enjoy, and again it was a tease and I want more of it, is
00:11:23
Speaker
Gato fighting the other curse manipulation user, he was just kind of like, ah, he's got the same thing as me, but this is my strategy, and yada yada. And then he just beats the living daylights out of him, my guide style. Oh my god, was the animation that great. I thought it was really annoying how they actually showed the life flash before his eyes, because it was like, OK, we don't care about this person this much to care about him and his dog.
00:11:50
Speaker
uh it was like funny for a moment but at the same time i was like if you only have a 20 minute episode get to the damn point i i love every minute of that fight because it was really just he's gonna he's not gonna get up close to me i'm gonna just rush him and then then he straight up like dodges and does that and it's just about to he thinks full well in his mind that he is about to beat the living shit out of this high schooler
00:12:16
Speaker
And then next thing you know, he is phase first with the dog and that just killed me for a second. It was like a level of, I loved it. I was, I, it blew me away for a second. I was like, trying to figure out, I was like, Oh, he, he just met his maker. He's, he's about to see God here in a second. This is, this is a courtesy. And then next thing you know, Gato just going fucking nuts. Just am fists.
00:12:41
Speaker
Elbows everything yeah be the living daylights out of him. It was such a delight to watch. Oh My god, did I send you a
00:12:54
Speaker
the post last week about how it was interesting how mappa took the time to animate the basketball rolling up to gojo and bouncing off his foot showing how he doesn't have that that control of his power that the barrier is always around him i've never uh no you never saw it sent that to me okay i definitely sent it to a couple of people but
00:13:19
Speaker
That was interesting because it gauged where his power is at this point and how he's just like not really invincible. So the scene that we were laughing about with him not able to use his reverse curse technique kind of added on to that a little more. Like that was more subtle, but this was just kind of like, hey, if you didn't pick up on that last week, he really is a second year student that's still figuring a lot of stuff out.
00:13:47
Speaker
And to match it, Megumi from like the current timeline didn't use his domain expansion until like the end of season one. And even then it was really sloppy. So it's like we don't even know if Gojo has the ability to do that yet. So I like that they're throwing in these things to just kind of show like, he still is really powerful and really gifted as a jiu-jitsu sorcerer, but there's so much learning to do because he's still just a second year student.
00:14:16
Speaker
Yeah, I love that for him. He's such a cocky little shit though. I love him. Man, I can't wait for a chip to be taken off his shoulder. I want him decked across the United States of America and back. What? Dude, alright, I love him to death, but man, sometimes he's just so dang cocky.
00:14:39
Speaker
You think he's gonna have a big fight with Gator that kind of puts him in the puts him in the dirt for a little bit? I feel like that I feel like that has to happen. Big good. Because you got to figure in the movie, they are a complete reflection of what they are now. You know what I mean? Like, oh,
00:15:01
Speaker
Gojo is saying the exact same stuff that ghetto is saying now and ghetto Now is saying the same stuff that gojo was saying yeah, I'm really fascinated by that because gojo is the the one that says like the powerful need to stay powerful and Gato's like no, we got to protect the weak So it's like what happens in this tangent situation that flips the script for both of them? Yeah, I think what happens is if I had to guess I
00:15:31
Speaker
I think, I think Gojo gets his absolute ass rocked. And then Ghetto at some point has to like claw his way out of a situation. I think they actually get to like witness the assimilation with Tang and Enrico. And that just kind of like, like there's something that's just like morally questionable about the process.
00:16:02
Speaker
that kind of gets them to start thinking about things. I mean, that's also true. I mean, because I also realized like, when I was watching the last episodes, like, I don't think I've heard of Tenkin before. They may have like briefly said his name, like with the same context of like the school's barriers and everything like happened because of him, but they didn't like go into too much detail. But also,
00:16:30
Speaker
Like this was the interesting thing about me watching the movie first was that they talk about the scenes from the movie a lot throughout season one and reference the main character a lot.

Subtle Hints of Gojo's Learning Process

00:16:43
Speaker
And it was one of those things where it's like, okay, I watched it so I know what they're talking about, but now I'm wondering like how many seeds have been planted so early on that were so subtle that it's like, have they talked about this before? And I think Tengen is one of those names that have been brought up a couple of times. I'll have to rewatch.
00:17:00
Speaker
I just finished a rewatch. It was so worth it. Oh, man, I mean, is definitely my favorite non-gojo character. Her and. Oh, God, what's her name? What's her name, Misa? Useless Misa. I absolutely love her. Hold on, is because I'm bad with names. I thought Megamy was the one with the dogs. Yes.
00:17:29
Speaker
Okay. Megami Fushiguro. I love I love Nabara. I think she's funny as shit. She's got that. She's got the comedy of Itadori, but that like no nonsense. Yeah, she's a good hybrid of the two. Mm hmm. Or as a lot of people like to call her a useful Sakura. I love her for that.
00:17:54
Speaker
She's walking so that future ones can run, OK? And that's what matters. And to walk now, maybe it's a sprint later. We don't know.

Anticipating Toji's Role

00:18:05
Speaker
So speaking of the fushiguro family, Toji is another one where it was like I was hoping to see more of him today. I was expecting this like huge face off between the Q attackers and Toji, you know, it's going to be a big face off. And it's like. Is he the one that tied up?
00:18:23
Speaker
Kuroi, is he finally in the picture now? Do we get to see what he's all about? Because he's another character who's like backstory was brought up a lot in season one. And now I want to fill in these blanks. But like, we got we got three more episodes of this arc. Like, let's let's get to it. It is. It's either they're going to fill a lot in in this arc or it's going to be left with
00:18:49
Speaker
some questions to be answered later and I don't know if I if I'm prepared for that I mean we still get like 18 episodes of the other arc so it's like there's the opportunity for like flashback scenes but
00:19:04
Speaker
I'm just impatient and I want more. I'm just a real thirsty baby who wants all this anime right here, right now, in a nice little cake. Not always. But in this instant, I'm getting needy. Demon Slayer, I was patient. I was like, okay, you did that perfectly. Give me next week's episode, but give me a week to process. Now I'm just like, no, I wasn't enough. Give me the next episode now.
00:19:33
Speaker
I do love me some Demon Slayer though. Demon Slayer is fantastic. They nailed it. The visuals on Demon Slayer are always top tier too. Which I guess that should be said again for Jujutsu Kaisen because I love the visuals. Especially the last episode where they're like walking up the staircase. Loved it. Walking up the staircase.
00:20:00
Speaker
What they like walking up a staircase or something in the very beginning when they realized it was like an infinite like Oh, yeah up the staircase into the building and then down the hallway. There was a hallway that was infinite Because one of them had like gone upstairs. You're just like wait, I stayed downstairs. How did you run into me in this hallway? And I always stuck The visuals the visuals in the hallway were good, too I love honest like

Animation Styles in Recent Episodes

00:20:28
Speaker
I think the entire introduction sequence of the last episode was just solid. It was entertaining but the way that they juggled so many different animation styles just threw me off.
00:20:41
Speaker
really hard throughout it but one of the greatest things that they did was when gojo and gato were introduced and they were just like little chibi versions of themselves and the little pop sound that they made when gojo like basically inflated while gato's just like rocking his head back and forth coming into the scene is a little doodle oh i loved it i i love oh my god i love that was so beautifully done
00:21:07
Speaker
I loved, I loved it when Gojo and Ghetto just entered the scene just to be like little cocky shits. It's like, sorry, you're gonna put down the veil? We don't need to put down, we don't need to put up a veil. We're too cool for veils.

Anime 'Mount Rushmore' Discussion

00:21:24
Speaker
All right, so I'm gonna ask you a question that I ask most guests of the podcast if they have an anime background.
00:21:33
Speaker
If you had to put four shows on Mount Rushmore, does that have to be a specific character? Four shows. What are your Mount Rushmore anime? I always have to pause because I always accidentally say Mount Rushmore because I go there more than Rushmore. I don't know. I feel like my I feel like mine is Mount Rushmore for sure. But I think
00:21:57
Speaker
Because you want a personal level of asking this like a Q times. I feel like I've changed my answer every time. So I guess it's the time of the question. I think it's time for us to have a solidified answer in writing or I guess in this case, vocal writing.
00:22:13
Speaker
yours is more of a play-doh mountain instead of like a rock culture yeah like because i love i love you yuhaka show um i love uh because i feel like that's because like everyone i feel like everyone grew up on dragon ball z i did grow up on dragon ball z but i loved yuhaka show when i when that that the dub came out for that i just suck that i sucked that all the way up um spirit
00:22:39
Speaker
Spirit gun. Oh my God. And the cool bars, uh, fricking energy sword dude, and his stupid little voice acting. Oh my God. I love, I love cool bar. Um, so that's your number one. That's, that's my number one for sure. That is my, it's my jump. That's my George Washington. Um, and then I think after that it's, uh,
00:23:08
Speaker
After he's on George Washington, I'm like heavily questioning if I know who's actually on Mount Rushmore. I think Abraham, I think it's like. I think Teddy Roosevelt, Jefferson, Washington and Lincoln. I know Lincoln and Washington are on it, and those are the only two I got. OK, what's your number two? Teddy Roosevelt.
00:23:38
Speaker
Um, I think my number two is going to be, um, Oh, thank God. I was right. Oh, wow. Dude, look at you. Um, I think it's going to be samurai Champloo. I just, the, the music for that is just too good. You're not the first one to say that one. And I still haven't seen it. Honestly, it's solid.
00:24:07
Speaker
It's one of those, it's one of those I can put it on and kind of like just like watch it, listen to it and all that stuff. It's honestly, it's just a good vibe. The baseball, honestly, if you want a good setting into it, the baseball episode is solid. Which we got in Jiu-Jitsu guys too. Something about anime and baseball episodes.
00:24:37
Speaker
My number three.

Favorite Anime Series and Their Significance

00:24:41
Speaker
Gosh. I always freeze up on this question. Because now my one and two, will that help? Yeah, hit me with your one and two. My one is Dragon Ball Z. My two is Naruto, which is arguably the greatest anime made. Arguably. My next two are more newer tier.
00:25:07
Speaker
I think Ghost in the Shell was pretty solid. I'm starting to reach for the memory banks here. Because it's not that I don't like newer ones. Because I love my Hero Academia. I love Jujutsu Kaisen. And I love Naruto to an extent. But none of them are really hitting my Mount Rushmore. But I remember- The honorable mentions.
00:25:36
Speaker
I don't know if big O is, is an anime, but it is definitely, it's definitely an anime. All right. Yeah. That's on my honorable mentions. Um, and pretty much like, what is it? I think jujitsu Kaizen and I will say, uh, my hair academia are definitely my honorable mentions. Still need a number three, my dude. Oh, I said, uh, my, my number three is, uh,
00:26:06
Speaker
Uh, Ghost in the Shell. Oh, Ghost in the Shell. Alright, what's number four then? Uh, number four. What's your Lincoln? My Lincoln. Ah, yes. Which anime freed the slaves? Emancipate this list. Emancipate this list. Save us. I think, you know, I think I'll, I think I'll end it on OG Dragon Ball. Okay.
00:26:36
Speaker
Not bad, not bad. That's what I like about this question. I always get very diverse lists that sometimes really throw me off. Or, you know, in my case, it's just a mile long 10 minute of me going, uh, let me go through my country real quick. I mean, I never warn people about the question. So it definitely, uh, it definitely throws everybody off. I'm just a menace like that.
00:27:05
Speaker
All right, anything about this episode, Hindered Inventory 2, that you want to bring up or mention?

Gojo's Fighting Skills and Character Appeal

00:27:12
Speaker
Have we mentioned enough about where he goes, it failed?
00:27:21
Speaker
Dex the dude in the face. While holding on to Rico. It's just still holding on to her and she's just is just dumbfounded. Like what is this guy? Is he a real man? Did they ever call his power six eyes? Um. Was that the first time we're hearing that? I think it's the first time.
00:27:51
Speaker
I don't remember season one all that well I'll have to rewatch it so all of my memories within a grain of soul like I got like for real I got home watched the episode and then started playing like video games and then I got your text I was like oh hey what's you want to do and it was hey do you want to hop on this podcast I was like oh yeah I'll do it but I guess what I have to do real quick watch this video real
00:28:19
Speaker
Because even though I watched it today, my dumb brain. Oh, mine does that too. Like there's been times was like I watched the episode and like immediately go to my desk and I was like, what did I just see? That's why I like these little synopses. Like I question if the listeners actually want to hear it every time. But like as I'm reading it, I go like, oh, yeah, that did happen, didn't it? Yeah, because I was because you texted me that I was like, I was like, I don't even know what I want to talk about. My short term memory really is all or nothing.
00:28:49
Speaker
Dude, it really is all or nothing. And then as soon as you were going through the synopsis and you were like, the punch, I was like, the punch! Gojo is my favorite, way too overpowered character, but I love seeing him not overpowered. Yeah, he is an absolute delight no matter what time frame you put him in.
00:29:18
Speaker
But I think that is it for this episode. Thank you so much for joining in. Depending on when my co-host decided to join me again, maybe I might hit you up again, or we will definitely be texting about the episodes as they go, because this is an exciting show and I'm glad that it's going to be back for a while. Yeah, just let me know. I'll come on so long as the people shout my name from the rooftops. Are there any other anime that you're looking forward to that's coming out this year?
00:29:48
Speaker
Uh, I'm sure this like, like short term memory loss. The second we get out of here, I'll remember it. But I don't think I have anything else on my list. I usually watch it like one at a time. Cool. All right. Well, that is it for this week's episode. Um, if you guys enjoyed, we would love to get a five star review because it definitely helps us out. And if there's other jujitsu fans that are looking for something to listen to, then.
00:30:17
Speaker
we need to pop up on their search feeds as well. So leave us a five-star review. Send us feedback at animationdeliberationpodcast.gmail.com.
