Caleb Call: Holy war pod. Caleb and Ben, we missed you guys last week. Our fall, obviously, life got in the way. I had some... a trip planned out east and I've been with some family stuff. so apologize for the last week but we are back and ready to rock and roll for the rest of the season and we uh didn't get to really preview it but First matchup for BYU. post -LJ injury. A lot of intrigue going into it. The line was just past double digits. and

Caleb Call: Really weren't sure how BYU was going to handle Iowa State. they Iowa State gave Utah a good game. They gave Iowa a good game. They'd beaten West Virginia. So it definitely seemed like a... formidable opponent and One of those games where...

Caleb Call: BYU passed the test. If you just went and looked at the yardage, you would think that BYU would have won this game by. four scores, maybe even more. And they legitimately could have, but they left a lot of points on the field.

Caleb Call: End up just winning the game 24 -10. Game was really never in doubt. But definitely some cause for concern when it came to some of the short yardage situations, some of the fourth down conversions. and it's kind of where you start to miss lj a little bit and you just hope that that doesn't end up affecting the game that Ends up being a loss that could have been a win had those ah Play has gone your way. What were your thoughts after watching that one?

Ben: Yeah, my exact same thing as every single short la short yardage situation.

Caleb Call: Okay.

Ben: It seemed like. BYU was missing LJ they uh I went and looked back at the yardage and on the ground if you just look at the the raw numbers, it looks like they had a fine day, but if you break it down and take.

Ben: bear rushing stats out of it.

Caleb Call: 109 rushing yards on nine carries.

Ben: Yeah, so he

Caleb Call: Bear is phenomenal.

Ben: He had a big, yeah, big game. And you're not going to take bear out of his stat line out of games. But like, if you just are trying to pick apart, okay, how did our running backs do? And how did our running game look that way? It was 22 carries for 68 yards. So just barely over three yards of carry, which isn't very good. And you saw it in those third and fourth. that I think there was third and fourth and shorts that they got stuffed. and they I mean, anytime a backer met one of those backs in the hole, it didn't seem like they were.

Ben: Um, bouncing off anybody. And so that seemed like that was the big thing for BYU is. um With an opponent like Notre Dame on deck, it doesn't feel like... That's gonna cut it. So they're gonna need a I think a heroic game from bear to be able to kind of make up for The running shortcomings is that was my initial take was.

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: the the short yardage BYU. Nope. I think they're just going to have to adjust their play calling. They're just not going to be able to just turn and hand it. like the maybe used to and got away with with lj so and maybe that's What they do against Notre Dame, maybe they just try a completely different short yards package and they get away with it that way.

Ben: But right now it doesn't seem like it's going to be.

Caleb Call: It felt like for a lot of the...

Ben: That's cool.

Caleb Call: Iowa State game. A -Rod was trying to... kind of preserved bear he didn't want to give him a lot of hits but he knew that like when we need it. We have bear's legs.

Caleb Call: in Bear's legs were converting when we needed it as well. He only had the nine carries for 109 yards. Had this game been closer, that stat might have looked more like a take vintage Taysom Hill stat with...

Caleb Call: 20 carries and 220 yards. Had to have been necessary. those plays were there. But this game was never really in question, despite BYU leaving points on the field. And so it felt like they were just trying to...

Caleb Call: really only use that when necessary i wouldn't be shocked if against notre dame bear has 20 carries. it

Ben: And I ah i actually.

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: You say that too, like if Iowa State would have hit that field goal to cut it to eight, I think the next drive all of a sudden. bear care Bear carry, bear carry. I think he all of a sudden gets starts to get the ball a little bit more if it becomes the one -score game.

Caleb Call: Yeah. Maybe.

Ben: and so Obviously it doesn't happen in you don't see as much of it but i agree i yeah if you if i gave you over under 16 and a half carries. for the Notre Dame game. Are you going over?

Caleb Call: I think it's going to be right in that vicinity. And it's really just going to depend on how the game goes. If that game is low scoring and like. Points are at a premium and essentially like.

Caleb Call: Almost like a TCU game. maybe under unless there's like a vital drive or too late But if it's like a high scoring game where you got to keep up, I wouldn't be shocked if it goes over because on.

Caleb Call: Those downs where you have to get them, you're going to sacrifice a few hits if you need to. so We'll see. And then if BYU falls behind, then we're going to be throwing them all. Honestly, not sure um but if i mean Honestly, I was promising to see from Bayer. I mean, he had an incredible stat line against Iowa State without LJ, and we saw it last year against Georgia Tech and Iowa State. The two games that he played without LJ, he did great in. Had over 300 yards in both of those games and had 300 yards here against Iowa State.

Caleb Call: He ended up having eight incompletions. and probably five of them you wouldn't even call his fault. He had one bad throw where he missed Kasper, probably could have been a 70 -yard touchdown.

Caleb Call: but there was a few drops. A few that were like close calls could have been PI, maybe not. Ball was still in a fine spot for the receiver. he hit legend glasgow for another bomb over the top which again, is I think just a huge key to the offense to kind of unlock it a little bit and keep the safeties playing a little more honest.

Caleb Call: so I think Bear showed that. Even without LJ he can still do what he needs to against a team of the caliber of Iowa state. And so that was.

Caleb Call: Promising to see and that makes you hopeful that. Maybe you struggle against Notre Dame, but at least against like... UCF and Arizona State that are coming after. that bear can hopefully do the same thing in those games and still get the win without lj

Ben: Yeah, one.

Caleb Call: let's get down

Ben: And the one thing is the defense looked really good. so The defense. I think it was 200 exactly when I looked at it, 200 total yards of offense for Iowa State.

Caleb Call: And 130 of those came in the fourth quarter.

Ben: Yeah, so it was and Iowa State's kind of a... They've kind of been an interesting team because... Um, I mean, they played their last three weeks they played Utah, West Virginia, BYU. And when they played Utah.

Ben: first half they they were under i think they were under in my head i the first number that popped in my head was 50 yards like they didn't like almost did nothing

Caleb Call: I think it had like 90 because they had gotten about to the 50 yards on like three different times. It had like. 20 yards on three or four drives.

Ben: And I think. And I think their field goal drive maybe put them closer to me. So maybe I'm thinking under 100 yards in the first half.

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: And then they had a decent third quarter. And so they ended up getting like, I think it was close to 300 yards, but not quite. And then they score.

Caleb Call: I was actually just looking at it today. it was that Utah had like 413 and thirteen in Iowa State I think had 311.

Ben: And most of those came in the third quarter for the Utah game. And then the weird thing about that, though, is West Virginia then goes important.

Caleb Call: Okay.

Ben: Or sorry, against West Virginia, they score 45 points. And so they kind of have this like. Really bad offense game against Utah. Then they light up West Virginia, and then they have another bad offensive game against.

Ben: I'm BYU. Is it West Virginia's defense is just terrible and maybe Iowa State's, maybe Iowa State's offense is just bad because they didn't look very good.

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: against BYU or Utah. and so um It'll be interesting to see because BYU, I mean, their defense locked them down. We don't know how good. Just the reason I brought that up is we don't know how good Iowa State's offense actually is. And it'll be interesting to see how BYU.

Ben: faces the test against Notre Dame this week defensively because I think a big part of that is like you said i I think the offense is um I think they're going to figure out ways to move the ball. and Get it. Um.

Ben: a handful of points on the board. It's just, can their defense be like they were last week and can they limit Notre Dame?

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: And um you've seen Notre Dame kind of struggle against some teams here and there. Like I think it was the Michigan state game. They only put up.

Caleb Call: 27.

Ben: Like it was 27 points. I think they won that one 27 10 and so

Caleb Call: Even North Carolina finished 37 -26. They have had a couple of clunkers where... against a better team. if they put up that performance, they very well could lose.

Ben: And so that's the one that's the matchup that's going to be huge for this game. is It's going to be... Can BYU's defense slow down the Notre Dame offense? and keep it low scoring. I think they're going to be, he's going to have to win a low scoring game. so

Caleb Call: BYU managed to get pressure on a ton of downs. They sent a lot of... blitzes that were getting through specifically it looked like the guards is kind of what they were targeting against Iowa State. It sounds like Notre Dame is going to be missing an offensive lineman or two, so that could help as well. But, yeah, the defense gave a performance that you'd love to see every week. And, honestly, I mean, that game.

Caleb Call: the way the game went. almost could have been a shutout i mean they Iowa State only touchdown came right after the defense had forced a... Big stop. And then. Tiger Bachmeier.

Caleb Call: uh muffs the pint and Iowa State took the momentum from that play and got the rest of the 45 or so yards and scored the touchdown. but they really There was no sustained drives all game for Iowa State. BYU's defense hit a goal.

Caleb Call: done a great job and so i mean honestly all year if you go back and look at all the games Against Arizona, you give up 17 points, and you shut them down completely in the second half. against Colorado State. You gave up a touchdown.

Caleb Call: early in the game They hit a big play that went for about 50 or so. Granted, they had the QB injury, but the next three quarters, they don't do anything until you put your backups in. And then they go put two touchdowns up on your backups.

Caleb Call: And then, obviously, we saw TCU, that game finished 17 -10. Weird game. but still only giving up 10 points and Iowa State 10 points again. Like, honestly, the BYU defense to this point.

Caleb Call: It's been awesome. losing and Jay Hill, you were a little bit concerned about what the defense was going to look like. um a year later but honestly despite the injuries that they've gone through they've been excellent so far. and yeah's I mean, they're going to have their biggest test of the season against Notre Dame. and potentially Utah a month later. so we'll see how they end up doing both then

Ben: so

Caleb Call: i say We'll talk about the Arizona -West Virginia game. but Arizona's offense has been lighting people up despite some wide receiver injuries. and um Yeah, to hold them to 17 points and scoreless in the second half is looking like a win that's aging better every week.

Ben: that the lot The second half, I think they... ah

Caleb Call: Okay.

Ben: It was like. three and out or like one first down in the punt hole. almost every drive and then they had that one drive where they ended up like inches short and there was that one drop from arizona that maybe would have been the like If Arizona catches that, maybe it's a...

Ben: um They go score right. They either kick a field goal or go score right there. And then BYU has to go answer in a tie game. And so that one's a. that was I mean, BYU, that was the only drive they really gave up. on Arizona in the second half. and So it was. I think it's going to be a, it's going to be a fun one this week with a game day coming to to Provo. You got a.

Ben: I mean, a top 10 matchup, anytime you got a top 10 matchup, those are the funnest games, regardless of if it's your favorite team or not to watch. um So I guess coming into game day coming in, what's your ah what's your initial thought? You're kind of expecting this after.

Ben: There were some SEC teams that lost, and it seemed like it looked like it was going to be a matchup.

Caleb Call: yeah We've been kind of mapping this out all year to kind of see if there was a chance that this game got gameday or even a holy war here in a month. Lots of competition for that week, so I'm not counting on that one. But this one felt like...

Caleb Call: it was really going to be down to Ohio State Indiana and the BYU Notre Dame. Texas, Florida had a chance, but. They're... They've lost enough games to not even have that be a consideration.

Caleb Call: I'm super excited to have game day in Provo. They've not been to Provo for 17 years. Last time they made it out was 2009 against TCU. and That game did not go the Cougars' way.

Caleb Call: BYU is actually 0 -4 in games where college game day shows up. Only once in Pro Bowl, three times on the road. so Hoping to. flip that around and change the narrative there.

Caleb Call: And honestly, I. I feel like it's... Kind of been earned by beauty to this point. They have crossed the last. um three seasons now two and a half seasons They've lost four games. They've had... many big games. and So it's nice to kind of see the recognition from the country and you hope that.

Ben: They did get big noon though, didn't they? or

Caleb Call: They got big noon a couple of times. Big noon might have even... gone for the holy war last year and then they got it against arizona the year before that too so they've They've had some recognition from big noon, but.

Caleb Call: Big New and I don't consider as prestigious, especially because... They only go to games that Fox shows. and so like Every week, Fox is showing three to four games, and they're going to go to one of those three or four games. If you're playing on Fox, you've got a 33 % chance to be on Big Noon. so But yeah, they they have been on big noon.

Ben: Thanks a lot.

Caleb Call: and I do feel like with college game day coming into town. It'll be a good chance. Thanks. This is where Big 12 can earn their respect because We saw it last year, Texas Tech losing to Oregon. We saw ASU had a chance against Texas the year before that. but to this point we really have not seen the big 12 kind of break out of this.

Caleb Call: you know, supposed shell of BING! behind the power two. SEC, Big Ten, they have all the respect, and they've won enough games in the playoff and against playoff contenders to earn that.

Caleb Call: Big Ten especially recently. And so now hopefully, I mean. It's kind of a prove -it moment for BYU as a program, having missed the playoff narrowly the last two seasons. but then also this is kind of a win that can change the entire perception of the conference moving forward as well. So awesome to have the opportunity. Thank you USC for.

Caleb Call: having the scheduling disagreement with Notre Dame. and letting this pop onto the schedule last second. Had that not happened, the team that BYU was supposed to play this year was Cal. And then Cal backed out because of the ACC schedule. And so we needed a game. Notre Dame needed a game because of USC. so all fell into place and it was honestly awesome i mean This is the kind of game where last year. if this game had been played in October or November.

Caleb Call: The winner made the playoff. BYU and Notre Dame they both ended up missing the playoff they were the first teams out Winner would have made the playoff last year. And I think that's the kind of impact that this game could have this year for both teams, especially BYU. If you lose this game...

Caleb Call: You get a mulligan. more than you would in a regular season without Notre Dame on your schedule. so

Ben: it's kind of a It's kind of a tough spot because it's not a conference game.

Caleb Call: Yeah, a huge one coming up.

Ben: And so it's like. if BYU were to win out, they'd be undefeated in Big 12 play. and so then at that point they're getting the recognition they need but the spot that really it would bring up is if they lose this game.

Ben: And they lose another game. That's probably. Now it's like, are they in or are they out? because I mean, if they go 11 -1 with their only loss to Notre Dame. like BYU is probably... Getting in.

Ben: They're playing in a Big 12 championship game.

Caleb Call: As long as it's competitive. You can't do what you did to Texas Tech last year and move by 22.

Ben: Yeah. Yeah.

Caleb Call: but like if you go do like For example, Bama just played Georgia. Bama lost by three points. Could have won the game. Very close game. They don't even drop in the rankings. Now, BYU loses a close game. They probably will drop just because.

Caleb Call: It's BOU, not Alabama. But you can like almost have a close loss. Count. as like a win or at least like a validation that you belong in the field with a playoff team.

Caleb Call: and You don't even have to win this game to get credit.

Ben: Yes. I even wasn't quite sure about Alabama. I thought they were good. I wasn't sure they were. in that top echelon after that Georgia game. Now I'm like, okay, I think Alabama. like That's what a close loss like that does against a top team, and that's what it would do for BYU too is if you go play a similar game that Alabama did and barely come up.

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: on the Um, the bad side of it. I think just nationally, everyone's just like, oh, BYU can play with Notre Dame. like That's just going to be in the back of the head.

Caleb Call: That's exactly like you want to see if you're. If BYU loses the game, what you want to see is BYU. punch Notre Dame in the mouth, especially on defense. If the defense can go out there and... I mean, people kind of expect the offense to struggle against Notre Dame, and Notre Dame's got a great defense. But a fabulous defense can go out there. and punch him in the mouth of this game is 13 -7 going into the fourth quarter in a close game. and Everyone's eyes are on it. Yeah, that's going to be.

Caleb Call: Something that can build respect for BYU. And obviously you hope to win the game, and we'll preview it more later in the week. but Huge opportunity. Excited that game day is coming. I expect to hear. 100 soaking jokes from Pat McAfee because that's the only thing he ever talks about when BYU comes up on his own show. so Can't wait for that.

Caleb Call: um we'll have boots on the ground for the game potentially game day as well be flying up to Utah this weekend. So excited for that one.

Ben: Yeah. um now Heading back over to the... or I guess. I shouldn't say back over. Up I -15 to Utah. They played Saturday night. and game because of the weather got moved up from the light. the late night 815 kick to 6 o 'clock.

Ben: that That game against Kansas ended up being ah earlier than thought. It was Utah's first ever whiteout. Um, And you talk. Utah kind of just did what. um you expected them to do.

Caleb Call: Okay.

Ben: They they got out early. and they kind of just They scored every quarter. Babe. masked a lot of yards they went like over 500 total yards as an offense and kind of just looked offensively like they have all year. They've just kind of took care of the.

Ben: Um, what they were supposed to and so um I just think from ah from a defensive standpoint, they – I've been talking crap on Isaiah Marshall all year. And so he.

Ben: ah

Caleb Call: We call them one of the worst quarterbacks in the country.

Ben: Yeah, and so I guess I get it.

Caleb Call: and You had a good day.

Ben: I get... I get it. Yeah. it was this bit i've I've actually watched a couple of Kansas games. Like I think I've seen three to four full Kansas game.

Caleb Call: Missouri, ASU, I watched. Yeah a few of them.

Ben: Yeah, I think I've seen three or four full ones now of Kansas and like from start to finish and

Caleb Call: Okay.

Ben: I just was not impressed with him at all. And that was easily the best game of the year that I'd seen. And so. um he he made some good throws that you texted me um after one of them where it was like he's running to the right side he threw like 45 yards

Caleb Call: Yeah, he scrambled about to get hit and he threw a dot to a covered receiver 40 yards downfield. It's a kind of throw that like. Bryce Young used to make.

Ben: Yeah. Yeah, and that's ah that's the type of things where, I mean, that. and A lot of the time, the Utah defender was like right on the hip pocket of the receiver, too. and It didn't seem like it was that bad of coverage. and so

Caleb Call: They meet some contested catchers.

Ben: I mean, sometimes

Caleb Call: They got some dudes.

Ben: Yeah. So sometimes you just kind of. I don't know. You just kind of tip your hat and go from there. and Kansas had that little stretch from the second to third quarter where offensively they were moving the ball. in um we're able to do some stuff and so I was able to... kind of figure it out. and Fourth quarter, they kind of pulled away. and We're able to.

Caleb Call: That game. was a couple yards away from being in much more interesting late because Kansas had Two fourth down stops, one at the one yard line and one at the six yard line.

Caleb Call: Those get punched in for touchdowns. I mean, they lost by 17. You're sitting there. potentially a three -point game. Obviously, the game entire way it would have played out would have gone differently. but Kansas, they moved the ball and were scoring points. and Something that we haven't really seen somebody do to Utah yet.

Ben: Yeah, and it was funny because we hadn't really seen Kansas do here so

Caleb Call: Yeah, it's true

Ben: so it was kind of a it was an interesting thing and he didn't actually do a lot of he's a I was kind of. thought he was more of a dual threat guy and he didn't do a whole lot with his legs, but what he did with his legs was he kind of extended plays and kind of created that way. And he threw the ball well, he threw the does easily the best game of the year. I don't know if he's even come.

Ben: like Okay? I didn't have to go look at his box scores. I don't know how many times he's gone over 200 yards, and he went over 300. he had a pretty good game. And so. Um, I don't know. It was Utah late last season against Kansas and Kansas State. had a a little bit of a defensive lapse.

Ben: Um... with just giving up points and giving up yards. And it was probably the worst they'd looked defensively all year was the last two games of the year. and Um, It kind of looked like that this against Kansas. It kind of was.

Ben: they were letting them move a lot and it just seemed like most of the game it was just like they or not most of the game, but like in that middle stretch of the game. And then, like you said, at the fourth quarter where they. They move the ball, but they didn't punch anything in. and so It, uh... i think It's one of those things as a Utah fan, you're going to, I mean.

Ben: You're going to have to play better defensively than that to to win the big games.

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: and so um that's At the end of the day, I'm still optimistic as a Utah. As a Utah believer, offensively, I think they're going to be in every game. I think they're going to be able to move the ball. on keep it close. And I think the defense is going to be better than that. on most weeks and so That's the type of game where I think.

Ben: um If you go play Houston. like that Like it's probably coming down to the wire. You might lose that game.

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: depending on the bow.

Caleb Call: Especially with Dampier having the...

Ben: pounces.

Caleb Call: two turnovers that he had too. You can't give up that many yards and be turning the ball over and hope to win against a better team than Kansas.

Ben: Yeah, it was kind of weird though that I yeah did you see the The interception that he was credited.

Caleb Call: Was the one that he threw down the field or the one that was a strip sack?

Ben: The strip sack.

Caleb Call: and that for you.

Ben: Did they change that?

Caleb Call: They changed it to a fumble.

Ben: Okay, I didn't see that they officially changed that to a fumble.

Caleb Call: Okay.

Ben: I was shocked that they...

Caleb Call: So one interception, one fumble.

Ben: They initially said interception, and i was I was confused. I was like, that looked like a fumble to me. but

Caleb Call: Yeah, that dude stripped it and cut it out of the air.

Ben: um And then...

Caleb Call: that

Ben: caught it out of the air yeah so anyways i

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: i thought they had already I thought they had added that as an interception as well, but no. So I guess they...

Caleb Call: That player, by the way, 44, Santiago, he's the one that had that strip sack, and then he also had a couple big plays, one down by the goal line.

Ben: He's a good body.

Caleb Call: That dude's an animal.

Ben: Yeah. Yeah, I was impressed by him.

Caleb Call: Number 44 for anyone who was watching. He had a couple of plays that I was really impressed by. The announcers mentioned that Kansas had made a huge investment on their defensive line. in

Ben: 33 I I liked how 33 looked he's a big body that looked physical and so they had some dudes on the um

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: up front where i think ah I think Kansas could, i like late in the season if someone's... banged up a little bit they could they could do some damage to somebody if down there

Caleb Call: BYU fans be nervous you play Kansas on the road second to last game of the year does that sound familiar we uh

Ben: Yeah, two years ago, for those of you that don't know what he's talking about, two years ago, BYU's in the Big 12 championship game if they beat Kansas on the road and they drop that game when they should have won.

Caleb Call: And it's not just BYU, but Iowa State and Colorado both.

Ben: on this up Yeah.

Caleb Call: Kansas beat three of the four teams tied at the top of the Big 12 that year in the last month of the season. just One of the weirdest things. Hopefully it doesn't happen again.

Ben: Did they finish like six and six too?

Caleb Call: But honestly, the way I kind of came away.

Ben: they They weren't very, like their record wasn't.

Caleb Call: They ended up going five and seven.

Ben: Five and seven, that's right.

Caleb Call: Yeah. Weird team.

Ben: Yeah.

Caleb Call: the I kind of came away from that game thinking that the Big 12 as a whole, Kansas kind of felt like they were a bottom dweller. Colorado is kind of down there too, maybe even TCU. TCU has got a great defense, but their offense leaves lots of desire.

Caleb Call: but Kansas, Colorado. even the tig These teams have had good moments against good teams to where it really doesn't feel like... the bottom of the Big 12. is like that bad.

Caleb Call: I... Honestly, there's not a ton of games you can just kind of go show up and sleepwalk through it We saw last we could didn't get to recap it but Texas Tech, Colorado. They're down at halftime 7 -3, and now they end up.

Caleb Call: Thanks to Isaac Wilson and a bunch of pick sixes. they end up winning that game comfortably. but Even Colorado, who might be the worst team in the conference, has a defense good enough to... make you nervous if your offense isn't playing well. Obviously, that's next up on the schedule for Utah. but Yeah, not a lot of off weeks.

Ben: It's weird though cuz Yeah, you Utah, it kind of seems like it's a...

Caleb Call: Okay.

Ben: It's a good matchup for Utah though. because Colorado's defense is what they're good and Utah's offense is what they're kind of known for right now. I guess, I don't know if you say Utah and offense being known for.

Ben: their offenses being they look legit so it doesn't seem like that's the

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: It seems like that's a good matchup for Utah. That's their strength, our strengths. are going to be on the field at the same time. and so That'll be an interesting one for Utah next or this week.

Caleb Call: Yeah, excited to see it.

Ben: so

Caleb Call: a revenge game for Isaac Wilson. Deion's already... causing some drama with Juju Lewis too. I don't know if you heard his press conference. beat Didn't say Juju got benched. He said, I wish Juju could tell you what happened. so Something ominous over there happened in Boulder. Not sure what's going on, but Isaac Wilson gets a chance to. get some revenge against utah and the coaching staff that at least he thinks did him a little dirty um The Utah -Kansas game, I kind of came away with like...

Caleb Call: Up to this point of the season, Utah had just kind of demolished the teams that they had played. Iowa State had a really good third quarter. and putting themselves in a position to maybe have a chance to win that game, but Utah still was able to put them away on the road.

Caleb Call: but Up to this point of the season, just having not played anyone, you weren't really sure because obviously Utah last year, they go 11 -2. They lose to the two best teams they played, Texas Tech and BYU.

Caleb Call: Both of those games close into the fourth, Texas Tech ended ended up pulling away. BYU won. close by three. Could have pulled away, but... wasn't able to capitalize and we talked kept that one closed.

Caleb Call: So you weren't sure, like it Utah obviously lost Kyle Whittingham, lost a bunch of players and stuff to Michigan. And. Obviously with Scali, the entire program's kind of rejuvenated, excited for the Scali era.

Caleb Call: And. I... I thought there was a chance Utah might have been better than they were last year at 11 -2. I think after the Kansas game, I feel like they're probably in that similar tier. It'll be really interesting to see them when they play Houston, BYU, and Arizona, and probably the three teams that are.

Caleb Call: good enough to give them a game. Especially even if Utah plays well, I think those three teams also could play well and give them a game. so I mean, that's going to kind of be the difference for Utah is you lost the two big games last year.

Caleb Call: You probably got to win two of those three this year in order to. have a chance to win the big 12 and make the playoff and so i mean we'll see if they can step up obviously they Lost by three in Provo last year, so I don't think they were that far away from winning that game. but Um. You got your...

Caleb Call: Two biggest games at home with Houston and BYU, so you definitely feel good about that. and Maybe we talk for a second about Houston because they looked like a bit of a wagon there against Kansas State. I don't know how much of that game you caught. but That game was a blowout from the start.

Ben: Yeah, I was watching the beginning of that game and I was a...

Caleb Call: Okay.

Ben: I was kind of curious to see. we i mean We talked a lot about Kansas State and their schedule because Kansas State's toughest. game on their schedule was Houston. And. Like they avoided Tech, they avoided BYU, they avoided Utah. So it seemed like they kind of were a little bit of a dark horse to.

Ben: If they could go. win that game. they had a um They can maybe... Like we were talking about them maybe sneaking in as a. kind of a dark horse Big 12 contender, but then they they drop a game to Cincy, then they drop the game to...

Ben: Houston and they didn't look very good either and so they kind of are an interesting team because We thought at the beginning of the year they might be one of the top teams. and Now it seems like that's a... a team that might drop a few more.

Ben: And they have Oklahoma State on their schedule.

Caleb Call: I think that's a 500 -ball club over there. there They're struggling.

Ben: Yeah, they Yeah, and after the 3 -0 start, you thought... Maybe they i mean they had a game. They beat Washington State and Tulane, I think it was. and but I think it...

Ben: for the most part. You look at their schedule and now they have Kansas state, which didn't look like a big game or sorry. They have Oklahoma state, which.

Caleb Call: For Kansas, yeah.

Ben: um Didn't look like a big game at the beginning of the year. That's now on their schedule they play. and They still have Arizona. TCU Arizona State and so It's kind of... Like like you said, like.

Ben: Like they'll probably, I would guess they make a bowl game like six and six, seven and five, but like, yeah, no, they're not. a nine or ten win team like we thought they could have been so

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: They're kind of, I don't know, it'll be interesting to see if they can get it. New coach over there, see if they can get things going.

Caleb Call: Houston's offense is rolling, and they've got this really awesome tight end, Overby. That dude is just giant. He's fast. Match of Nightmare. and They were able to do a lot with him against Kansas State.

Caleb Call: and Honestly, I mean... With what we've seen from Houston, they had the very close loss to Texas Tech. They had the game against Oregon State that we were kind of wondering, okay, should we be concerned about this?

Caleb Call: No, it turns out Oregon State's just a good team. They're putting up 60 on everybody they play right now. so i mean I honestly do think that. Houston belongs in that top tier with the other contenders in the Big 12.

Caleb Call: They lost by two to Texas Tech on the road, had a chance to win it. and They've got Two huge matchups coming up. We'll preview this one in our show later in the week. But they got Oklahoma State.

Caleb Call: Biggest game to this date. for Oklahoma State in the conference. Houston already playing a second -ranked Big 12 team. They said ranked games don't happen in the Big 12, but no, they do. Houston's got this one and Utah coming up soon after that too. so We're going to know real fast about Houston, how good they actually are with Oklahoma State and Utah coming up.

Ben: yeah and Just looking at that. after the game I went through and looked through the box. score of that game that you've seen one and six of their first seven drives. So there's seven drives.

Ben: from the first through the third quarter. They... They went 70 yards or more. on All six of those drives went five touchdowns and then missed a field goal on it. And so they just moved the ball. They just punted the ball in the fourth quarter. So they didn't do a whole lot when they didn't have to.

Ben: And so when they needed to most of the game, they just moved the ball right down the field.

Caleb Call: Yeah

Ben: and And we're able to get things done. And so Houston's kind of a fun, sneaky team. i I think Utah fans want to see them win. against Oklahoma State next week. You'll get a... a ranked -on -ranked matchup if that happens. and so Utah fans are...

Ben: Hoping for, I mean, you might get a. A top 15 -ish matchup if... If Houston can go beat Oklahoma State.

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: Because right now, Oklahoma State's... 18, Houston's 20, depending on what happens in front of them.

Caleb Call: There was a lot of big games like there's

Ben: you jump a little a bit

Caleb Call: potential for a lot of teams to jump in the top 25 if you just win so yeah that's Could be a big jump for the winner or that one

Ben: So um that's one to look out for this weekend is that yeah that game. But, the yeah, Houston kind of rolled. Kansas State looks down compared to what we thought. so

Caleb Call: There are some discourse I saw on twitter about Connor Wegman potentially being the best quarterback in the state of Texas. And we'll talk about. Arch Manning and what he did. Marcel Reed. has not looked good at all this year.

Caleb Call: It's not like Jaden Craig or Will Hammond are scaring anyone. I think there's some validity there. I mean, if I had to take one of those quarterbacks from the state of Texas to – be BYU's quarterback, I probably would take Conor Buckman over anyway.

Caleb Call: anyone else right now. the way he's playing.

Ben: that's an interesting i hadn't seen that so I mean it's a... It's definitely not Jaden Craig from TCU, so.

Caleb Call: Yeah, you might be the last one. DJ Lagway. He might be in the top three there, too. The state of Texas does not have a lot of great quarterback play going on.

Ben: Lagwe.

Caleb Call: Ronald Wegman has.

Ben: Great. So you got Wegman, Lagway.

Caleb Call: we Yeah.

Ben: Manning. And... uh marcel reed Am I missing somebody? i feel like i'm missing somebody

Ben: Yeah, that's probably I mean, you can make a real argument for that. um

Caleb Call: Oh, Kevin Jennings at SMU too. And he's. Had some flash moments, but he struggled.

Ben: I guess. I guess we didn't say Tex quarterback, Will Hammond too, so.

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: Amen. You're probably not ranking him in the top, but he's one to throw out there too for the state of Texas. Yeah, interesting ah interesting debate. It'll be interesting to see if Texas can go. I mean.

Ben: go rebound from their from their last week. so

Caleb Call: Matt, before we jump into the whole country, just two last Big 12 games real fast. Oklahoma State. They were in a brawl with UCF 21 -21 halftime. They came out in the second half, put up 21 straight, end up winning 42 -28.

Caleb Call: Arizona against West Virginia. West Virginia's defense really might be the worst in the country. which is too bad because their offense is really good. They're scoring on everyone they've played so far. But they gave up 45 to Iowa State, and then they gave up 52 to Arizona after Arizona had their top three receivers all miss the game for injury.

Caleb Call: um Arizona I think is obviously a good team. winning by 21. two time zones away in morgantown at nine in the morning Awesome win for Arizona. still Waiting to see if Arizona can... again once they get a second chance against a top team.

Caleb Call: if they are a Big 12 contender. They have Texas Tech somewhat soon here, two weeks. They've got Iowa State next week after a bye this week. so I mean, Arizona there.

Caleb Call: Hanging around, only loss so far is BYU. They've won every other game by double digits to this point.

Ben: Cincinnati, West Virginia. Washington State. so They haven't really got – that West Virginia game is probably their – next biggest game besides BYU so far. and so Um,

Ben: Iowa State. doesn't seem like that's a i mean That game's in it.

Caleb Call: Arizona should win that game.

Ben: It's at Arizona too, so That's a game they should win. and then The following week is at Texas Tech, so that's ah that'll we'll probably figure out in Lubbock on Halloween how good Arizona actually is, and that'll be there.

Ben: it's kind of funny they don't the The teams on their schedule ended up not like Iowa State, TCU. Kansas State. Arizona State, like those teams.

Caleb Call: Those all seem scary preseason.

Ben: so yeah They all seemed like they were like potentially losses preseason. Now you look at those and those all seem like pretty big win or pretty. not easy wins but It seemed like they were, uh...

Ben: wider on the schedule, but they still At the beginning of the year, it looked like a really tough schedule because you had Tech, BYU, and Utah. So you still have those three, but everything else kind of seemed a little bit lighter. so It'll be interesting to see if they...

Caleb Call: Yeah. And honestly, if you're Arizona. Having already lost to BYU. It is not a bad thing to have Tech and Utah on your schedule because when it comes to tiebreakers, you get to decide on the field. if you're better than them or not. So if it comes down to Arizona and tech.

Caleb Call: You get a chance to go beat them. Arizona -Utah, same story. so Now that you've lost a game, you need the opportunities to force your way back into the conversation, and Arizona controls their own destiny still. which is awesome for them. so Excited to see them know if it feed up.

Caleb Call: I think pretty confidently you could say he's... maybe the Most polished passer for sure and arguably the best quarterback in the conference. He's had a great season so far despite some. injuries at wide receiver.

Caleb Call: So excited to see them the rest of the way.

Ben: my My biggest takeaway from that game was less about Arizona. It was more about West Virginia's defense. I just think they're awful. They ah they give up 52 against Arizona and then Iowa State, who's kind of struggled offensively.

Ben: gave up 45 the week before and so I think. It'll be interesting to see what happens with Arizona down the stretch here when they play Tech in a couple weeks and then Utah, I guess. I don't, I offensively, they're, they're good.

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: They have feeders. I mean, you have a guy that's been a quarterback in cultural ball for several years. He's going to. hes his experience will be able to hopefully score some points and keep you in close games. but man. Virginia defense that just hasn't really looked anything. So I really don't know if I I don't think we know much about Arizona yet. it's what I got out of that game is I just think we know that West Virginia is going to give up a crap ton of points.

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: So.

Caleb Call: West Virginia is playing old school Big 12 football. They are there to play offense.

Ben: Yeah.

Caleb Call: and get their offense back on the field as fast as possible. Not by three and outs, but by glinting up points. we I think so far in the Big 12. we We did a tier ranking earlier.

Caleb Call: And I think you you have the five that are ranked that have kind of separated themselves. you've Kind of got Tier 1A and Tier 1B with Houston and Oklahoma State already having taken losses. I don't think Arizona and Baylor.

Caleb Call: are that far away from either of those groups like i feel like it's a Very clear top seven to this point. And I think the rest of the nine. are very hard to rank.

Ben: Yeah, they all kind of seem like they're good enough to beat each other too.

Caleb Call: between like Cincinnati and Kansas State.

Ben: like

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: so

Caleb Call: But the top seven, I mean, yeah. with Baylor with Arizona, Oklahoma State Houston, and then the three undefeateds, BYU, Texas Tech, and Utah. though There are a lot of games between those teams.

Caleb Call: Arizona's playing in Utah and... tech. You got. Baylor playing the last three games of the season against BYU against Houston against Texas Tech. BYU -Utah play. like it

Ben: Utah, Houston.

Caleb Call: Last year.

Ben: Yeah.

Caleb Call: Yeah, Utah -Houston. Houston also played Texas Tech and plays Oklahoma State. so Last year where it felt like there was only three games that mattered, Texas Tech -BYU, Texas Tech -Utah, and Utah -BYU.

Caleb Call: Like those were. Those three games decided the conference race. this year you have about. 10 games between those seven competitors. So it'll be interesting to see how it all ends up playing out. but I mean, honestly, we're We could be. a week or two away from having seven ranked big 12 teams, depending on how the rest of this plays out. And it feels like that's.

Caleb Call: Hopefully a good sign moving forward. You need more teams that. are separating themselves in the conference and I feel like the seven programs that are doing it this year have staffs in place where they could continue to do it year over year.

Caleb Call: Assuming that I mean... Arizona and Baylor are kind of on the fringe, but you'll always have a couple of teams that kind of step up like that. But I trust Willie Fritz, Scali, Sataki.

Caleb Call: um and Obviously, Texas Tech with their boosters. I trust them more than I trust Troy McGuire. but Yeah, it's ah hopefully a positive trend. with what's going on and more so Oklahoma State.

Ben: And speaking of Oklahoma State, their game was.

Caleb Call: Yes.

Ben: kind of an interesting one just because they uh we I guess we talked a lot but little bit about it. Tie game at half, and then they just blew it open in the fourth quarter. so Um, That's two weeks in a row. my ah my One of my super dogs, I went UCF.

Ben: And then the week before I went Colorado and a halftime, they both looked like great picks in that.

Caleb Call: You don't care about them balls, you know.

Ben: Texas and the pick six in the end zone against tech for Isaac Wilson. And then last week UCF collapses in the fourth too. So maybe you take my, my super dogs and you, you bet the first half.

Caleb Call: Bet the first half.

Ben: But.

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: Yeah, so Oklahoma State, they're kind of a fun team. i I hope the loser of Oklahoma State -Houston stays ranked this after this week. is I think it would be good for the Big 12 to have those ranked teams. And, I mean, they're 18 and 20 right now, so I don't know if they will. but um It might take him another week today.

Caleb Call: It's a close game. Maybe it's possible.

Ben: Yeah, if it's a close game, maybe. And so I'm hoping i'm hoping Big 12 can just keep – keep the top insulated towards the towards the top in the rankings. And like you said, have five to seven teams in the rankings. so

Caleb Call: UCF's gotta buy. And then BYU goes out to Orlando. So I had my eye on this game just because I wanted to see, like... What do I need to again? Everyone has circled this UCF game as a major trap game because...

Caleb Call: You get the either. Hangover after beating Notre Dame or... Let down after losing across in the country either way The situation of this UCF game with them coming off a bye and you coming off another game isn't great.

Caleb Call: But Oklahoma State was able to move the ball pretty consistently. I feel like with the way BYU played against Iowa State, I wouldn't. expect be you to do anything. blessed in that. so

Ben: But the interesting thing.

Caleb Call: the ucf

Ben: Interesting thing is UCF actually, and Houston just looked good this last week. The week before, UCF kind of held Houston pretty tight. like they

Caleb Call: It was 17 -0. I think either halftime or almost halftime that UCF was dominating the first half.

Ben: It was. Yeah. And so they kind of, and Houston exploded late, but their defense did good enough to to keep give them a shot to win that game.

Caleb Call: They're good.

Ben: And then they kind of. I mean, Houston kind of explored it at the end. so that's ah I think it's an interesting game because you've seen kind of two types of teams that were like Oklahoma State scores 42 and then Houston.

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: at zero Wow. I think it was midway through the third quarter before they finally scored. and so um it's in They're defensive leads. They're coming off a bye, two losses in a row. so um I mean, that's kind of like the the bounce back spot for a lot of teams. but And then it's coming off the trap game for BYU. So both, both directions, like if I was a BYU fan, I probably would have wished UCF would have won that game just so they're coming off. when, but.

Ben: They can kind of.

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: um get complacent a little bit and feel good about them themselves. So I think that game will be ah an interesting one for BYU in Orlando, a lot of time zones away. so

Caleb Call: What was kind of different about this year from some of the years past in the Big 12 is it feels like even like the worst teams in the conference, we already talked about a little bit. like they are still teams that you need to be a little scared of. Like a UCF.

Caleb Call: ah Three losses, they're sitting you know at the bottom of the Big 12.

Ben: They had a real shot to beat Houston and Oklahoma State.

Caleb Call: No, not yet. Okay.

Ben: like They're good enough to do that.

Caleb Call: Yeah. Exactly. And so, I mean, yeah. yeah You can't really count on a win against anyone that you're playing against. You can't go out there and play your. seed game and expect to win.

Caleb Call: freely, so. Yeah. um Oklahoma State, great job winning that one. Ever since the Tulsa game, they've been like a different team, especially on offense. They're scoring on everybody that they're playing, and it's just so weird how.

Caleb Call: Their offense looked. awful. It looked like 2025 Oklahoma State against Tulsa, and they have just completely flipped the switch since then. and honestly kind of like a miracle and shocking that they were so bad and it's a like a shame too because They just won that Tulsa game and were sitting there undefeated as well.

Caleb Call: They're probably... About where UCLA is at number 12 in the poll right now.

Ben: Yeah, it's kind of a... It's one of those ones where...

Caleb Call: College football.

Ben: It's always... Yeah, it's...

Caleb Call: You just never know.

Ben: it's tough with the what ifs like you could even i guess to to go nationally a little bit right here you can even say that a little bit with the texas game like texas probably sitting there looking and watching the tape like, holy crap, we just dominated this game and lost.

Ben: And that's just sometimes what happens in college football. Like Texas gives up a block pump for a touchdown, a pick six for a touchdown. And then. a bad pick at midfield, which. two Two good throws later from Matias, only two good throws of the day, it felt like. and um And then all of a sudden you're kicking.

Caleb Call: Both were incredible catches by Cetenya.

Ben: a Yeah, and...

Caleb Call: He's an awesome player. and I mean, everyone knew what Oklahoma's... Like, what their... game script looked like for a win. And their game script for a win.

Ben: I even said. I even said on the punt before, they didn't really come after it. I'm like, I'm surprised they're not coming after punts. Like, this is probably their only way to score. And then this next punt, they went and blocked it. recovered it so Okay.

Caleb Call: Legitimately, like Oklahoma... had a better chance to win and score points. when their offense is off the field. And I think that will probably be true in most every game they play. And credit to their defense, their defense is...

Caleb Call: Top five defensive college football. They are incredible. And that's who Brent Venables is. And we've had this conversation before. When you're that good at one side of the ball, maybe you should just be content being a lifetime coordinator.

Ben: Do you know what they should do?

Caleb Call: Lincoln Riley. confirm

Ben: They should go higher. they should put They should have just like a general manager be the head coach of just some random football team and Lincoln Riley and Brett Venables just go be each other's coordinators.

Caleb Call: If they just combined forces, they'd be unbeatable.

Ben: Yeah.

Caleb Call: Yes, that needs to happen. um But yeah, I mean... Oklahoma, they... did what they needed to to win and we've kind of been talking about it all year Texas.

Caleb Call: Had the two best wins in the country at some point with the road win against Tennessee and the home win against Ohio State. And despite... Those two huge wins. Nobody felt great about Texas. like Their offense has been...

Caleb Call: despite all the talent. has struggled to move the ball, struggled to score points. They're now 23 -3 in the fourth quarter against Ohio State. Came back and won, had a couple of fourth down plays. That game.

Caleb Call: That first fourth down doesn't go their way. They might lose 30 -3, and they're already sitting here at two losses, probably missing the playoff. But they get the huge comeback to beat Ohio State. Beat Tennessee 20 -17.

Caleb Call: But really like. Nobody trusted their offense yet, and here they are against Oklahoma. They still put up 27, but Arch Manning with his two interceptions. Really, those cost them the game plus the blocked punt, and they still weren't moving the ball.

Caleb Call: Like every drive against Oklahoma, they were struggling. so Honestly, Texas, they're sitting there at number seven in the pool right now. and even with the win against Ohio State. I'm not 100 % sure Texas is going to be a playoff team because they've got five currently ranked opponents in their next five games. they They've got some tough games on their schedule. you know, the way arch and the offense is playing.

Caleb Call: I'm not sure they're going to be able to go and win enough of those. i mean they're they don't look like a top 10 team on offense. On defense, they're amazing as well. they're They're essentially, I'd probably call a slightly better version of Oklahoma.

Caleb Call: And Oklahoma managed to not throw pick sixes and Texas did. and that's That's why I ended up winning the game for him.

Ben: Yeah, there's a few games. There's actually like...

Caleb Call: Okay.

Ben: a chunk of games every year where I even tell you this, and I don't know if you get mad at me sometimes where I'm like. I'd pick the other, like if they play tomorrow, I'd pick the other team again. And that was one of those.

Ben: Texas has been in two of those games where Ohio State, Texas.

Caleb Call: Okay.

Ben: You you see that game, you watch it. and You're like, if that game was played again tomorrow, I'd pick Ohio State. And then same thing with this one, Texas, Oklahoma.

Caleb Call: For sure.

Ben: If you see that game again tomorrow, I'd pick Texas. That just happens sometimes in college football, and that's why it's so fun. is so um like

Caleb Call: You never know.

Ben: you never know bad pick like a bad couple picks and all of a sudden Um, all of a sudden Texas loses that game that they shouldn't lose. And on their schedule, they this is their schedule in order for the rest of the the next five weeks that you were just talking about.

Ben: Florida. Ole Miss, Mississippi State. at Missouri, at LSU. Florida just dropped out of the rankings, but those other four teams are ranked, and those are five games that are all. ah all tough games. And so, like you said, if they, ah if If they make mistakes and play it like they did against Oklahoma, they could drop another game or two in there easy. and so And if you're at three losses, are you in?

Ben: They weren't last year. And so. um Yeah, they're going to have to figure it out. and um Those teams, some of those teams like the Mississippi States, they didn't really compete against Bama. a couple weeks ago, and the Missouris, how good is Missouri?

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Caleb Call: I bet you only two of those teams will end the season range.

Ben: Have a good one.

Caleb Call: Florida, LSU, they probably have too many losses left on their schedule. and plus one of the Mississippi schools and Missouri. like Really.

Ben: I'm still...

Caleb Call: It was like the entire.

Ben: I'm still betting. if If you made me lay my money right now, I'm still betting on Texas making it to the playoffs. with that schedule. like It seems like those games...

Caleb Call: I would too.

Ben: It seems like those games are all tough and they could drop. several of those Um, like they could drop any one of those five but at the same time i would expect them to win most of those and so i uh

Caleb Call: They'll be 7 to 14 point favorites in all those games.

Ben: Yeah. Yeah, and so, I mean, you also have ah A and &M to end the year at A and &M. this year and so um

Caleb Call: That's the equivalent of playing Utah State this year at Texas A &M. If Texas loses that game.

Ben: Okay.

Caleb Call: Get them the hell away from the playoff. If anyone loses to Texas A &M, keep them away from the playoff.

Ben: the Yeah, Texas. So Texas is kind of an interesting spot, but I think they'll be fine. I i think their defense is... is really good too. I think Texas' defense is... defenses the real deal. And so I think they'll be able to win some of those games. And as long as they're special teams and.

Ben: quarterback aren't giving points to the other team, I think they're going to be in a really good spot to win a lot of games. so

Caleb Call: So... one of the reporters and this is not the first time sarkeesian has been asked this but they asked him if there was any chance he would give up his play calling. authority and give it to somebody else. And he said, not a chance.

Caleb Call: But with the amount of talent they have on offense, At what point do you think it is an offensive coordinator problem? And at what point do you think it's an Arch Manning slash just... execution problem on the player's part.

Ben: Yeah. It's a tough question to ask. because i mean we're not in the building we're not knowing what's being asked we're not knowing

Caleb Call: we

Ben: the process behind everything. And even as just like. a Like I heard, this is... what i heard from scali a couple weeks ago was like yeah like the pf we like what pfp does but like

Caleb Call: Okay.

Ben: our Our coaches know exactly what we're telling our players. and our the exact assignments and so we have our own grading system. So it's tough to know without knowing exactly what the coaches are asking, exactly how it's being executed.

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: um I probably would say it's... the the problem in the game it felt like it was more of an arch thing than a a play calling thing it just seemed like a bad bad decision making um to me and so i would probably

Caleb Call: The pick six especially. like

Ben: Yeah.

Caleb Call: you're scrambling around thrown into traffic after like At some point, you need to know when to let a play die.

Ben: Yeah.

Caleb Call: End.

Ben: But at the same time, it I mean, it's not just. all on the players like so the coaches have to put them in those good spots and so Um... I would probably say I would lean 65 -35. towards Arch's fault is it?

Caleb Call: players. Yeah.

Ben: Yeah, and so I But I still think, I mean. He's got Sarkeesian's. I mean, the past few years, they've been good enough to beat anybody in the nation and they just haven't. performed and executed.

Ben: Like last year, they went nine and three with the a loss in the swamp to a five and seven Florida team. And so. where is it a four four and eight sorry i i remember they missed a ball i forgot they were four and eight um Yeah, so I mean.

Caleb Call: Four and eight, Florida. Four and eight. Amen.

Ben: At the end of the day, he's got a... He's got to get a lot better that you haven't seen. You had that kind of like. random season where they weren't very good and then all of a sudden they make it to the 14 playoff when they lost to washington the semis and then honestly they just the expectation has been that they were going to get back and they just haven't really been that good since and so they're kind of a I mean, Sarkeesian's got to be better with, I mean, theyve he's got the best, one of the top five rosters in the nation on paper every year.

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: so He just hasn't done as much with it. So it's going to be interesting. I think he's got to be better. But at the same time, I probably put a little bit more on. That game being Arches Mistakes.

Caleb Call: Yeah. whats What's weird about Sarkeesian to me is... Like with Lincoln Riley He's a great offensive mind. And they suck on defense every year. With Brent Venables, great defensive mind. They've sucked on ah offense every year.

Caleb Call: Sarkeesian at Alabama is one of the top offensive coordinators in the country. like They were so good on an ah offense. with a similar level of talent. Probably better quarterback play with who they had at Alabama those years. Bryce Young was part of that stretch, Mac Jones and so on. but Then...

Caleb Call: You go to Texas with. Gwen Uwurs, who was a... you know, five -star prospect in Arch Manning. and all the talent around them and it's the defense that's winning games for Texas, not the offense.

Caleb Call: Like it is just a. Weird situation with Sarkeesian supposedly being kind of an offensive mastermind, and it just not played out that way, and instead they're awesome at defense. and struggle to score, move the ball on most everyone on offense.

Ben: Yeah, it'll be

Caleb Call: Okay.

Ben: It'll be interesting to see how it plays out down the stretch, too. like That Florida game seems like Florida's given up a lot of points. so You would like to see them get right offensively in those.

Caleb Call: yeah

Ben: so um texas it'll be interesting to see how they uh they do i expect them to be right in the mix and That Ohio State win. It makes it seem like. a potentially, depending on how the rest of the nation is, a 9 -3 Texas doesn't seem out of the the water, but we've never seen it happen yet.

Caleb Call: They're one of the very few teams with that Ohio State win that could get consideration in 9 -3.

Ben: Amen.

Ben: Yeah, and so they're kind of a team where be We'll just have to see how the rest of the nation plays out. like They might steal a bid at 9 -3 if... everyone else kind of doesn't take care of their schedules so

Caleb Call: this honestly and We'll talk about the Oregon -UCLA game in a second. But when it comes to the SEC, This was like worst case scenario week for them. You still had a couple of your teams. When you had Missouri beat A &M, you had Ole Miss beat Vanderbilt.

Caleb Call: And then obviously the Georgia -Bama game. that will Talk about here in a second as well, but You had Texas lose to Oklahoma. Yet LSU... Lose to Kentucky, now granted Kentucky still only has one loss and jumped up in the rankings as well.

Caleb Call: But LSU is a brand that you were excited. They were in the top 10. or seen as like a championship contender. Then you had Florida, who was just in the top eight. go get beaten by South Carolina handily.

Caleb Call: like it just feels like You have the entire country and I'm leading the charge. Talking about how that middle tier the SEC is just very fraudulent not as good as They would make you want to think Tennessee.

Caleb Call: They were down to Arkansas in the fourth quarter. They ended up winning 24 -17. This is an Arkansas team that... got killed by Utah, got murdered by Georgia. like Tennessee should not be playing that close of a game against Arkansas.

Caleb Call: All right Middle tier of the SEC. I trust Georgia and Bama. Even Texas behind them. like It feels like every one of those teams. is living off the conference patch, not their own merits. guy I don't know. it but Who I thought I trusted, I definitely don't trust as much. Even like Ole Miss, they lost by 24 to Florida, and it turns out Florida's not even that good of a team.

Caleb Call: And they had the close win against Louisville, who already has three losses, too. like I don't know. it's it Outside of Georgia and Bama, I'm not sure there's really many teams that I trust to go and... win even a game in the playoff right now in the SEC.

Ben: Yeah, Tennessee, look. Somehow they're still at 14. I had... i don't know how they went up a spot And...

Caleb Call: They are not in my top 25, nor will they be soon.

Ben: There.

Caleb Call: they Not until they beat somebody who's...

Ben: they played They played Bama this week, so.

Caleb Call: worth anything.

Ben: um if they beat bama they probably a six and one deserved to be in but

Caleb Call: And I expect them to lose by double digits in that one.

Ben: I agree.

Caleb Call: we were

Ben: so it's It's one of those things where we'll... I think they're 14. All right. It's going to look like a good win for Bama. but um It's going to be one where I think. Like you said, I'd be shocked if it's not.

Ben: I would be shocked if it's not two or three scores. It is in Knoxville. so They do have that going for them. So it will be interesting to see how. ah how Bama responds after that ah that loss last week. and That game was an interesting game, too.

Ben: I mean... he kind of had the the controversial pi late where bama's freaking out about it and Live I didn't mind it just because it seemed like it was bang bang and then you see it break down and you're like Oh, that was early but

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: Um,

Caleb Call: with slow motion The entire thing changes. Live, I also didn't think twice about that not getting called. It looked like the ball and the player got there. borderline simultaneously.

Ben: Yeah. so i mean that's one where um I was kind of a... I don't know if you expected it to be that low a scoring. I kind of was expecting if Bama was going to be in a game, I thought it was going to be a little bit.

Caleb Call: yeah

Ben: a little bit more points on the board.

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: and so um

Caleb Call: Both teams have been scoring every week. I kind of thought the same thing. i didn't realize how good both those defenses were.

Ben: Yeah.

Caleb Call: I knew Georgia was going to be good, but Bama's... after giving that 36 to florida state like i Thought they would struggle more against Georgia than they did.

Ben: Yeah, and so. That's kind of a... It's going to be interesting to, I mean. As a football team, you want to be able to win ball. types of games and so you want to be able to win those low scoring games when you your defense can do it for you you want to be able to

Caleb Call: Okay.

Ben: when those high scoring games where your offense has to do it for you. and so That was a a nice win for Georgia. they ah I mean, I think they put up like. over 400 yards anyways and so they put up a lot of yards just didn't get a lot of points on the board and so It was ah an interesting game that way for them because I think.

Ben: I think Georgia is going to, I mean, they're scheduled the rest of the way. is ah is not very... Yeah.

Caleb Call: Ole Miss is probably their toughest game. Them are lower than the rivalry.

Ben: Yeah, and that looks a little bit lighter Yeah, that's right. Georgia feels like it's the clear front runner to go. I wouldn't be. Like I'd bet 12 and 0 right now. and

Caleb Call: And honestly, if you're anyone besides an SEC fan, you want Georgia to go 12 -0. luck at the playoff spot.

Ben: Clip

Caleb Call: don't give any

Ben: Clear out the other SEC teams.

Caleb Call: good big ways to anyone else.

Ben: Because 10 -2 Georgia is getting in anyways. And so you might as well have. As Big 12 fans, we want them to go 12 -0, take care, give losses to everybody else, and we want them just to be the number one team because they're getting in. And so.

Ben: That kind of clears out the way for a potential second Big 12 team. and Um, You're seeing some rumblings of three. I don't think three is going to happen yet. I think. 2 is kind of like the hope for a Big 12 fan this year.

Ben: so

Caleb Call: There was like one exact scenario where you can get three. And that scenario was BYU beats Notre Dame, loses to Utah. and then Utah goes 12 -0 and then loses the Big 12 Championship game, then you could probably get three.

Caleb Call: But I think that's the one scenario that happened.

Ben: Yeah, so it's It's kind of an – I mean, the SEC is kind of – emptying out with Oregon losing this week they're kind of falling out so there might actually be a second potentially third bid. i i would i'd be shocked if there was a third bid but like

Caleb Call: I think two might be more likely than one at this point.

Ben: Two bits fills room.

Ben: Yeah, I ah It looks better than ever right now. um Just the SEC and the big Big Ten just haven't kind of... They haven't looked as good as they have in the past. And it doesn't look like like the last two years.

Caleb Call: Not at the top of these. days

Ben: Yeah, the last two years, the SEC had five last year and the the Big Ten had five bids the year before. and it I wouldn't be surprised if there's no five bid league this year. and so it'll be ah It'll be fun for... down the stretch, big 12.

Ben: I think he's going to be able to push for two. so

Caleb Call: Hopefully. Another i mean huge game this weekend. we mentioned already oregon ucla I've been... banging on this drum all year. Like Oregon was ranked 13. going into this game.

Caleb Call: Oregon did not deserve to be ranked going into this one. I know they beat Boise, who's ranked. Boise's only ranked because they beat... lost close to Oregon early in the year. You've got. like They had already lost to Oklahoma State.

Caleb Call: then um Again, they had beaten USC, who I still think USC is a very fraudulent team themselves, but that's really the one that they're hanging their hat on right now. and They go out there, granted, I know there's no Dante Moore.

Caleb Call: Dylan Raiola played. the worst quarterback. game I've seen anyone play in forever i mean Two interceptions, 40 passing yards, and he played like three quarters of this game. They had under 100 yards going into the fourth quarter against UCLA.

Caleb Call: That's a UCLA defense that gave up 38 to Purdue. like they We're not a perfect defense to give a 24 to Cal. Oregon had 200 yards of total offense. and Turned the ball over, I think, seven times, including turnover on downs. like Just an awful performance from Oregon. Glad that they got booted from the top 25 and don't expect them back anytime soon.

Caleb Call: And credit to UCLA there. 5 -0. They're winning games. they jumped up i think to number 12 in the ap poll and I mean it's... If you are hiring a new coach,

Caleb Call: Go to James Madison, make that coach tell you no before you hire anyone else. We saw it with Signetti, now Chesney over in... l LA with UCLA has them undefeated as well. And by the way, Billy Napier has James Madison undefeated still. so I don't know what it is with James Madison and their coaches, but there's some sort of black magic going on there.

Ben: UCLA Schedule um Wisconsin. Michigan State. Nevada. Minnesota Illinois. Michigan. usc You talked about Michigan. We both feel the same way.

Ben: Feels like a very easy. God. like overrated team. Like i I think USC is one of the most overrated teams in the country. And... they get they kind of They lose by 14 to Oregon, and we just found out Oregon dropped out of the rankings this week with another loss.

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: uca schedule is pretty light their toughest game actually might be their next one wisconsin's kind of became a sneaky team because they uh they've only got one loss their opener they lost ah to Notre Dame and they actually played them tight for the first half before Notre Dame kind of pulled away. And so.

Ben: This one's a... Wisconsin's kind of a... I mean, if they can take care of Wisconsin, all of a sudden UCLA might be streaking like 8, 9, 10, and 0. They're an interesting team.

Caleb Call: It'll be interesting. i

Ben: Yeah.

Caleb Call: How does UCLA get treated when their schedule... like By the end of the year... They might be 12 -0 with zero ranked wins. Unlike the final college for boring you What if they lose a game and they're sitting there at 11 -1?

Caleb Call: Like that schedule. probably is pretty equivalent to what BYU played last year, or maybe even worse than BYU played last year. i But they've got the Big Ten logo on their chest. and I don't know.

Caleb Call: The way they've played so far. They will be a vulnerable to an upset. Oregon played one of the worst games in the world. and they lost by two. And so like somebody like Wisconsin or Illinois or Minnesota definitely could go out there and meet UCLA.

Caleb Call: But if Chesney can keep winning these close games, and they are, 10 -2, 11 -1, 12 -0. It's going to be an interesting. scenario to see how a poor schedule in the Big Ten gets treated compared to how Big 12 teams get treated.

Ben: Yeah. On the other side of it, how what's your thoughts on Oregon?

Caleb Call: Okay.

Ben: Are they, ah to you, are they out? Like, ah is there any way for them to? Um,

Caleb Call: They still play Ohio State. And that is a do or die game. They win that game and win out. They're a playoff team. for sure.

Ben: 10 -2, win against Ohio State in.

Caleb Call: They lose their house if they're done, that simple.

Ben: I agree with that.

Caleb Call: Yeah. but But if you lose to Ohio State, you're done. Your season's over. and so it They gotta win out. They don't have any more room for error at this point. Now one interesting scenario we haven't really talked at all about yet.

Caleb Call: Ohio State. Has Indiana this week. well I'm sure we'll preview that one. Huge game. What if Iowa State loses? And they're sitting there with two losses already. granted both to top 10 teams, in Indiana and Texas.

Caleb Call: But you're sitting there with two losses halfway through the season. What do we do with you? You don't have any good wins. on your resume to this point congrats you beat maryland you beat

Ben: Amen.

Caleb Call: I it was a good team.

Ben: Bye. Iowa, yeah.

Caleb Call: But...

Caleb Call: how How do you treat an Ohio State team that can't win a big game? and Later in the year, they still got Oregon. They still got USC. They still got Michigan. Not sure if any of those teams will finish ranked. USC might just because of the way they've...

Caleb Call: I mean, their schedule kind of plays out for them. but i Don't know about that Ohio State and the entire Big Ten. i mean It just kind of feels like it's a... weird conference this year for Really, the Big Ten and the SEC both, I guess.

Caleb Call: I honestly don't know really. who to trust, and Indiana's looked vulnerable against Nebraska. they That Nebraska game was funny. they go down 17 to six and immediately just two huge touchdown plays and 20 to 17.

Caleb Call: signetti just

Ben: why didn't they Why didn't they go for two after their first touchdown?

Caleb Call: Okay.

Ben: I don't know if you were watching that game. but

Caleb Call: Yeah, I... Wasn't sure either. if i had to guess it was some sort of like false start penalty that made the the extra point but I have no clue. i when I think he went to the bathroom after the touchdown and came back and they hit Keith an extra point and I was very confused as well.

Ben: That was... I just thought it was kind of a

Caleb Call: yeah

Ben: I mean... So it's seventeen you're down 17 -6. You scored a touchdown to make it 17 -12. And you got to decide if you want to kick the extra point or not.

Caleb Call: you

Ben: and There's that. There's 1150 left in the game. I just barely pulled it up. 1151 when they scored that touchdown. So I was kind of surprised they didn't. Go for two.

Caleb Call: You have to go for two there.

Ben: Yeah.

Caleb Call: Even if you get the false start, I'm still going for two.

Ben: Yeah, that's up

Caleb Call: Maybe Zanetti just knew that Nebraska had lost 30 straight ranked games. They were going to find a way to lose, so it didn't matter. You never know. 31 straight ranked game losses from now for Nebraska.

Caleb Call: and Sad enough for them, they play Oregon this week. who just fill fell out of the rankings. So you don't even get a chance to.

Ben: can't fix it okay

Caleb Call: Probably a very winnable game for Nebraska. They don't even get a chance to go right that right away. so

Ben: That'll be an interesting one. um

Caleb Call: Okay.

Ben: Down to the next one, LSU -Kentucky. So um this game was a fun one. Went to overtime. and He saw a two -point conversion to win it at the end.

Caleb Call: Kentucky. Two games in a row. gets to overtime. Go second. Scores a touchdown to... cut the lead to one goes for two both times gets it both times

Ben: Not only that, it's the exact same score both times.

Caleb Call: Bullets games. 35 -34 both games.

Ben: Yep.

Caleb Call: Like... You just. a mirror of each other And they did it against South Carolina, who is not regarded as a great team. They did it against LSU, who was in the top 10. I just really do think the entire SEC is just a jumbled mess of just very similar teams. this year None great.

Caleb Call: And in fact, I was actually talking to an SEC fan. They went 10 -2 in the Outer Conference. That out of conference record on the surface, it looks really good.

Caleb Call: But when you go dive into the teams that they beat. It really is not an impressive list of teams. Legitimately, I think the second best team that the SEC beat in the Ida Conference is Baylor.

Caleb Call: They beat Ohio State. They beat Baylor. But after that. Georgia Tech. who's looked Not great at all this year. you'd be um Louisville who struggled, Florida State.

Caleb Call: Clemson. None of these teams are teams that you're really hanging your hat over. It's teams in the lower end of all of these conferences. We can keep going down the whole list too, but really it's just a... flag Florida State was on there.

Caleb Call: Out of the Big Ten, they beat your ACC. They also beat NC State. like None of these teams were that great. And so even though the SEC is being perceived as, like, they're back because they went.

Caleb Call: you know, 10 and two minutes power four. I really just don't know. and LSU after killing Clemson. I thought they were. on their way to being a top 10 team and probably a playoff team.

Caleb Call: And then they go lose to Ole Miss. They lost to Kentucky. They've had some injuries, but, I mean, they have a tough schedule the rest of the way, and I'm not sure they're going to be able to. really recover from this. That's a devastating loss for them and already set into two losses this early in the year.

Ben: Yeah, now it feels like. I don't think LSU, I mean. ah ten two ah You always think a 10 -2 SEC team is going to have a shot. to make a I'll play off, but a nine and three team, we haven't seen it yet. And so in a team like LSU, like.

Ben: I feel like ah a 9 -3 team to have consideration has to have a ginormous win. It has to be considered like the... Georgia's, the Ohio State's. like the top end of the top end to really have a shot to get considered for that um a nine and three i think that's gonna be one of the first nine threes is gonna be like one of those big brand names and LSU is not there right now.

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: Um,

Caleb Call: They have a chance if they beat Bama and drop another one. like they But again, you lose Bam when you're sitting in 93, and you don't have a chance to add that win to your resume with the rest of the schedule.

Ben: they They got Bama and Texas left. So, but with two.

Caleb Call: I guess never mind. to go One and one there.

Ben: Yeah, so if you go 1 -1 there, you're at 9 -3, but...

Caleb Call: Okay.

Ben: I don't know if that does it. they're They're ranked 22nd right now.

Caleb Call: Honestly.

Ben: I i think they got a win out. I think they got a... come win both those games. and um Yeah, so it'll be interesting. i it looks like on the I think it looks like both of those are at home, so they both get them in Baton Rouge.

Caleb Call: Okay.

Ben: so Now... It'll be interesting to see what happens in those ones. But, yeah, that's a bad loss. And it's kind of an interesting thing. Kentucky, after they win that game, they ah they're going. to Oklahoma this week, and they're a seven -point underdog against Oklahoma. and um

Caleb Call: You go look at the rest of Kentucky's schedule. They're a playoff dark horse right now. Oklahoma. Vandy. Tennessee. Florida, Missouri, Louisville That is not a murderer's row.

Ben: Yeah.

Caleb Call: They've got one loss.

Ben: Hmm.

Caleb Call: They probably attended to... I would guess sneak into the field. and You I mean, yeah if you can go five and one down this back stretch Where your toughest game is probably the road trip either to Tennessee or Missouri.

Caleb Call: i mean Yeah, there's there's a road where we see Kentucky in the playoff.

Ben: Which would be crazy.

Caleb Call: Yeah, nobody would have seen that one coming. And meanwhile, I mean, Will Stein leaving Oregon and Dan Lanning in Oregon.

Ben: He's better off.

Caleb Call: struggling over there. Yeah. crazy win or Crazy week for college football. Talk briefly Florida, South Carolina. One last game I wanted to touch on just briefly.

Caleb Call: Notre Dame. Got the run game working against Stanford. They won that one 58 -7. They had a running back break off for 160 yards. um Obviously, they're coming to Provo this week, and so I had my eye on that one for Notre Dame. and there Granted, Stanford is not a great team.

Caleb Call: But that's the first time really this year where you've seen Notre Dame run the ball like they probably hoped to this year after losing. Love and Bryce to the NFL last year. and Yeah, so far they've played five teams that.

Caleb Call: Besides Wisconsin, the other four probably all will miss bowl games. But here against Stanford. Huge blowout win 58 -7. Might have been the best they've looked so far this year. and BYU on deck. First real test for the Irish coming up.

Caleb Call: And... Do you think that the run game is fixed for Notre Dame, or do you think it's kind of more just a result of... their opponents.

Ben: Thanks. I think Stanford's just terrible.

Caleb Call: week.

Ben: They got blown out by. Miami early in the year. They got blown out by Duke.

Caleb Call: Wake Forest, 57 -3 as well.

Ben: he got blown up by wake forest and so i think it's just i think that's more of a result of Stanford. They had that running back go for 180, and he had a 97 -yard touchdown. so that was half of his or over half of his yards and so

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: I, uh... It'll be interesting to see what happens with Notre Dame just because. we were talking about it a couple weeks ago where they just haven't looked um as imposing. um running the ball as they happen. in the past and even last year and so.

Ben: I mean, that's what happens when you lose two first -round running backs, I guess. so But at the same time, BYU is down L .J. Martin. and So it'll be interesting to see if either of these teams can run the ball on the other team's defense because it seems like.

Ben: I would probably chalk up the advantage to the the defensive fronts. to both sides um on the run game. i It'll be inch interesting to see if Notre Dame can figure it out because they were.

Ben: legit last year and so it's kind of been an interesting thing the first few weeks to monitor is that they haven't been as dominant as I expected at least, and I'm actually surprised to rank two. Just, I mean, I guess this is what happens when you have a few losses, but I just.

Ben: I was really surprised all season how high they were ranked just because they hadn't looked. as dominant as i expected them to like i i expected them to kind of blow out Michigan State and some of these.

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: excuse me and North Carolina and some of those teams that they've played. and so Yeah. It'll be interesting to see. a the The line, the early line for the Notre Dame BYU game is 10 and a half. I saw it. at 12 and a half.

Caleb Call: Opened at 12 and a half. It's already down two points.

Ben: Yeah. So it'll be interesting interesting to see what that... finishes that i i always saw 12 and a half at the beginning of the year and I was thinking I was gonna... I liked BYU plus 12 .5 just because I felt like the game was going to be closer.

Ben: with no lj i was now second guessing it but the line even shrunk so um kind of did the

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: opposite of what I thought was going to happen. And so, I don't know. It'll be interesting to see. I think that's going to be a fun one. I mean, game days in town, top 10 matchup. BYU fans is exactly what you want. You want to be able to... Play against the best. It's too bad you don't get LJ to to really see your full.

Ben: full strength on it but um this is the type of game that the that not only the Big 12 needs, but as BYU. players, coaches. This is the games that you want.

Ben: You want to be able to make your statement.

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: and Make the nation.

Caleb Call: One thing I will say about the LJ situation.

Ben: from watching.

Caleb Call: Last year, LJ Martin gets hurt in the Iowa State game. He rushes back. and he plays against Texas Tech two weeks later. And he played the rest of the year with an injured shoulder that required surgery in the offseason.

Caleb Call: Had LJ not played in that Texas Tech game... Let's say the final score is the exact same, 29 -7. Then you at least give the narrative of you weren't at full strength. You were missing.

Caleb Call: the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. So now here with Notre Dame. same situation that let's say you go out there and you lose by 10 but you didn't have lj I think it could honestly be a narrative that helps BYU without LJ playing, if you're going to lose the game anyways. Obviously, you want to be full strength. You want to win the game.

Caleb Call: But. A close loss without LJ. I think we'll be treated in BYU's favor and could honestly end up being the almost like a beneficial thing. BYU might have been better off last year if LJ had just not played.

Caleb Call: And you got to kind of use that as part of the narrative of the loss. So.

Ben: it's tough though because narratives are hard because i feel like you

Caleb Call: We'll see this year.

Ben: like that that Argument makes sense logically, but I feel like the big 12 historically. hasn't gotten the benefit of the doubt.

Caleb Call: They don't get the benefit of the doubt like that.

Ben: of the narrative like texas or like an ohio state if something like that were to happen

Caleb Call: you know

Ben: They're absolutely like the committee, every national media members, all the talking heads are saying those things and everyone's talking about those things. and I don't know if. um the big 12 quite would get that yeah so I mean...

Ben: logically makes a lot of sense and so it's ah It seems like it's going to be a tough one for the Cougs, though, without LJ. It feels like LJ is... a

Caleb Call: Amen.

Ben: offensively there. I mean, he was the big 12 player of the year last year. So you lose the big 12 player of the year. It's going to be a tough. ah Tough offensive hill to climb, so.

Caleb Call: Looking at the AP poll after I've... Crazy week. New number one, Georgia jumps out. and you just kind of had a bunch of teams climb up the spot. Texas dropped six spots.

Caleb Call: So Georgia 1, Notre Dame 2, Miami 3. Ohio State 4, Indiana 5. They play each other this week. Bama loses to number two, Georgia. They sit in number six. Texas falls to seven, BYU eight.

Caleb Call: Om is nine. Tech 10, Utah 11, UCLA moves up to 12. What's interesting about this to me is Obviously, you had Texas drop below Bama, and they're sitting there right above BYU.

Caleb Call: I wasn't sure, but Ole Miss killed Vanderbilt. Ole Miss and BYU have been pretty close in points. BYU is kind of in an island right now. They're over 100 points ahead of Ole Miss and over 100 points below Texas. So they're kind of just like firmly entrenched there at number eight.

Caleb Call: And now with Notre Dame on schedule. You've had Alabama. just show you that with a loss to a top -two team, a close loss. They did not drop a single spot in the pool.

Caleb Call: I honestly don't know. Like if BYU loses a close game. Not sure if they get treated the same way. um with Ole Miss play Missouri, and that's a team that probably is. Ole Miss could jump with the win. Tech and Utah have ASU Colorado. Like, not games that probably would be too impressive. but um Something interesting to monitor. And then after UCLA, you've just got...

Caleb Call: this hodgepodge of SEC mess.

Ben: NCC Yeah.

Caleb Call: Missouri, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi State. I honestly wouldn't be shocked if three of these teams finished the season unranked. I don't think any of them are really that great. Missouri's been probably the most impressive to me, but They do have a rough schedule, including Ole Miss this weekend.

Caleb Call: If they lose that one, they could be on their way falling out as well.

Ben: They actually...

Caleb Call: Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if those teams go 0 -4.

Ben: And Tennessee plays. Tennessee plays Bama. Kentucky plays at Oklahoma. And then Mississippi State plays at LSU. I wouldn't be surprised if.

Ben: Three of those four or all four lose this week.

Caleb Call: but all They could go 0 -4 this week. That'd be kind of a fun parlay, 13 through 16 all losing this week.

Ben: All losing, yeah, so. That's kind of a, the SEC, it does, and even UCLA, it's hard to know about them. that Honestly, right after the Utah, it seems like that's kind of like a...

Ben: a group of teams that you just don't know and you don't feel great about like

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: And as a big 12 fan, if you kind of. if This is kind of an exciting thing. if you make If you made the college football playoff bracket based on the AP poll, you'd get three teams right now with...

Ben: um BYU being 8, Texas Tech being 10, Utah being 11. All three theoretically would get in, and then Boise State would get the 12th seed. Right now it kind of looks good for the Big 12 with those three teams in there right there.

Caleb Call: Yep.

Ben: all right now and so kind of makes it a ah fun down the stretch for the big 12 is. All these SEC teams are beating each other up. The Big Ten, one of their... baby uh favorites to to make it was organ They fell.

Ben: I think the Big 12 is looking for multiple bids this year. i I ah like you, Steve.

Caleb Call: The winner of Houston, Oklahoma State is going to jump into the top 15. almost for sure. It would be shocking if there were.

Ben: especially with those SEC teams, of the lists we just said.

Caleb Call: wasn't enough carnage. That's what happened.

Ben: So I ah i think you're sitting at a top 15 team for Oklahoma State, Houston, and now you've – it just makes – like if Houston goes and beats Oklahoma State this week, then – Now you've got Houston 15. If Utah's at 11 or 10 or wherever, they end up.

Ben: Next week, then. Now you got a top 15 matchup and then the winner of that's all of a sudden kind of. feeling pretty good and bolstering the big 12. resumes and so and then a couple weeks later you got BYU -Utah and depending on how BYU does against Notre Dame, depending on how Utah does against Houston.

Ben: Now you're looking at potentially a top 10 matchup. and and it hopefully that kind of gives them a cemented in the top that the teams that win those games and so it's kind of a fun uh

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: If you look at just the AP pool and you base it off of that right now, it looks like the Big 12 is in a pretty good spot.

Caleb Call: Yeah, honestly, I mean. If there were a 2014 playoff, you'd have five firmly in the field right now, which is. crazy and i mean Honestly kind of exciting. I know the whole country's kind of against 2014 playoff, but The Big 12 is begging for a chance to prove themselves on the field.

Caleb Call: And that's how you're going to do it. You're not going to get respect until you win playoff games. you would have five different teams have a chance to make a run. in an extended playoff so i I really do think that expansion.

Caleb Call: despite being unfavorable for a lot of the countries a lot of people are against it I think it only helps the Big 12 and not something that I would mind. it all with it. ended up happening.

Ben: It almost feels like as a Big 12 fan that... Like right now it looks like everything's lining up perfect for a multiple bid it almost seems like It has to be like that for a multiple bid ah year.

Ben: And. other than that like in the past it just felt like you have to win the conference to get in and so um 24 teams it makes it so it feels like you can

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: You don't have to be perfect to to get in. and so

Caleb Call: Yeah. Real quick I just wanted to go revisit the preseason rankings. We're halfway through the year now. A couple of things that stand out.

Caleb Call: I don't fault the voters for this, but Oregon started the year number two. Second straight year, you've had a team. fall short the year before. Bring everybody back. Start the year number two.

Caleb Call: and drop out of the rankings just like that. Penn State did it last year. Oregon did it this year. All right. Again, just proof that just because you brought everybody back from a good team does not mean you're going to be just as good the next year.

Caleb Call: Oklahoma State learned that lesson the hard way after making the Big 12 championship game and going 3 -9 the next year. um

Ben: You got A and &M.

Caleb Call: every year at TMZ. Okay.

Ben: A and &M. did something similar too.

Caleb Call: Yeah, it's true. A and &M, they made the playoff last year. They're number eight this year preseason, and they are already out. Oklahoma, same thing. there already out of the top 25 despite a win against number one Texas. They're still not ranked.

Caleb Call: and they shouldn't be rightfully so um so

Ben: And they were preseason 10. So that's three preseason top 10 teams that are all out.

Caleb Call: Okay. Yeah. Every year there's... At least one top 10 preseason team that finishes unranked. And we've already got three six weeks into the year that have dropped out of the ranking. So it's been a.

Caleb Call: Crazy year so far. Another thing I wanted to highlight. There's a few teams That are only ranked today because they started the season preseason ranked when they shouldn't have.

Caleb Call: USC I put in that bucket Last year, they went 9 -4. They lost every big game they played. They lost to TCU in their bowl game to TCU's third -string quarterback, who they did not invite to come play this last year with them.

Caleb Call: um They start the year 14th. for no reason it was literally because people could still remember the quarterback's name I think that that. honestly has such a big impact on where Team Start is.

Caleb Call: Have I heard of this quarterback before? With USC, yes. You've heard of Maiava. Maybe this is the final year they do it. They start 14th. Their defense has been so bad all year long.

Caleb Call: They're sitting there 5 -1, ranked 19th right now.

Ben: 6 -1, actually.

Caleb Call: They do. this.

Ben: They haven't had their bye weeks this week.

Caleb Call: 6 -1.

Caleb Call: The guy is just not a team that belongs in the top 20 and yet here they are because they started the year ranked Michigan and Washington both started ranked when really Washington, you could have argued for because they just finished the year ranked.

Caleb Call: Michigan bringing in a lot of new pieces. They were unranked at the end of the year. SMU in Tennessee. SMU is ranked right now. They do not belong anywhere near the top 25. They lost to Louisville, who has three other losses.

Caleb Call: They... Their best win is Florida State, who is not a good team either. Like it? Just the whole process. like People need to reevaluate their rankings. Week over week and not just move teams up or down based on what you had before SMU is not a top 25 team this year Tennessee started number 20 despite losing every game against a good team last year.

Caleb Call: And they're already doing that again this year, but they're ranked number 14th because... Their only loss is Texas. We can't punish them for... ah close loss to Texas. Meanwhile, they look like garbage against Arkansas and still have not beaten anyone to no.

Caleb Call: And then. One of the things that's tough like Arizona. They were just out of the top 25 to start the year And then they got a quick loss to BYU. He was top 10 in the country right now They've won all their other five games by double digits.

Caleb Call: And they are just back where they started, the fourth team out preseason, fourth team out right now. That's a team that with a different conference patch. It's probably ranked around 20 to 22 right now.

Caleb Call: But. Again, the you lost early. We kind of just stopped thinking about you. Arizona's not a team that we normally expect to be good, and so you're just kind of fighting from behind. And then a Baylor. also five in one.

Caleb Call: After killing ASU last week, 55 -19. And they're not even getting a single vote in the AP Top 25 right now. Which is just kind of absurd to me. They didn't they were nowhere near the preseason rankings, nor were they expected it to be. but It is just a...

Caleb Call: annoying thing the way voters vote and you can go dissect everyone is everyone's individual ballot but It is kind of a maddening process. I wouldn't mind seeing some reform there.

Caleb Call: Okay.

Ben: Yeah. I mean When you were talking about that, it kind of just reminded me of... As of Utah last year, Utah is coming off of. their worst season in a while, five and seven. and All of a sudden you get.

Ben: After their second loss last year, they're out of the rankings. And they had a pretty good year. and um like they were dominating everybody else besides their two big games on their schedule and And they honestly played into the fourth quarter with both of them. and And then when they ah when the CFP poll came out, they were 24 the week before, and then they won.

Ben: And they jumped up to 17 in the AP poll that week. But then that was the same week the CFP came out and the CFP had them at 13. And so. The only reason I'm bringing that up is I feel like the CFP does do a better job at evaluating what's actually happening on the field. and so When that comes out.

Ben: Um, They usually don't the nice thing is it didn't match exactly from the ap pogas at that point Utah was just seven and two.

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: And I felt like. I felt like they were 24th because. was mainly because they had a bad year the year before. And so.

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: That's kind of the nice thing about the the CFP is they do evaluate it more on the merits of that season. A lot of the time.

Caleb Call: One thing I'll say on that note, though. I agree. on their first rankings. Because they get to come into it fresh. They get to see, hey, did that week two win matter or was that an overrated team and that win like.

Caleb Call: Beating Texas A &M week two or three, whatever, Kentucky beat them. Looked awesome then. It doesn't look like it's anything now. And the AP reacted you know abruptly for Kentucky there.

Caleb Call: But. The committee gets the full scope. But then once that first ranking comes out. They kind of have the same problem that the AP poll does where. they aren't getting a fresh revaluation every single week and so they still have like six full weeks where It kind of falls into the same trap.

Caleb Call: And I think that... The sport would be better off if they kind of did what basketball did. which is we're going to give you a little snippet with a month left in the season. We're going to give you the top 16 teams.

Caleb Call: If the committee came out. first week of November and said, hey. If the season ended today, this is what our playoff would be. and just left it at that. And then at the end of the year, Give us.

Caleb Call: the final rankings. Where we're not getting the week to week. trap of like they They just... Put themselves in these binds with their rankings and then one week Like that exact week's results might not have right changed much.

Caleb Call: but a whole bunch of prior context changed. But it's hard to go and adjust for that week to week. and like you saw it last year they kind of realized an issue that they were going to have where if BYU were to have beaten Texas Tech.

Caleb Call: then Alabama was going to miss the playoff. And so with faulty logic, they're like, well, we can't have the SECs. Number one regular season team missed the playoff, and so they vaulted Alabama above Notre Dame.

Caleb Call: When Bama had barely beaten Auburn and Notre Dame had crushed Stanford. and like I don't know, just the whole... The way they rate teams on a week -to -week basis is so flawed. I like their fur drinkings and they do a good, like a fine job there.

Caleb Call: But i just the the week -to -week show needs to end. that It just traps you into logic that you shouldn't have to follow the rest of the way because you had teams ranked one way. Okay.

Ben: Yeah, it'll be interesting to see what happens we're still several weeks out from my CFP poll so we Yeah.

Caleb Call: I think three more weeks.

Ben: It's good.

Caleb Call: First week of November, I think, is when it comes out.

Ben: Is that before the BYU -Utah game or is that the weekend right after?

Caleb Call: BYU -Utah game will be the first game after that.

Ben: Okay, so you'll get...

Caleb Call: playoff ranking comes out.

Ben: You'll get the the rankings, the new CFP, and then you'll see. ah see where the The committee has BYU. See where the committee has Utah.

Caleb Call: Yeah.

Ben: You get the Holy War, which is kind of fun.

Caleb Call: Yeah, and if they both keep winning, that's going to be a top ten holy war. BYU will probably be in the top five and Utah. Talk.

Ben: What if BYU has a lost another game?

Caleb Call: Peace. you know

Ben: So say BYU is... Alright. Is that? Is that 9 -0 -8 -1? Is that what the records would be?

Caleb Call: One less game, so it'd be...

Ben: Eight and oh and seven and one

Caleb Call: 7 -1, 8 -0.

Ben: Okay, so what if it's 8 -0 Utah versus 7 -1 BYU?

Caleb Call: I think.

Ben: They lost to... Say they lost. Say the spread hits exactly. It's 10 points. So BYU loses. to by 10 points to Notre Dame. What's the ranking?

Caleb Call: I bet you that game would be. 7 Utah against... 9 BYU. about thereabouts.

Ben: Which will be fun. Do you think, and then we were talking about this earlier at the beginning, does game day come to that one? Normally I would probably say yes, but that week is tough because.

Caleb Call: Notre Dame -Miami is going to get game day.

Ben: that

Caleb Call: I'd be shocked. if didn't

Ben: Yeah, so it's kind of a... ah kind of a too bad one, maybe.

Caleb Call: And if not, you've got a couple other big games to like. Bamo plays Ellis. You grant to Ellis who's lost some of their... I have to go back and look at the week. I mean, that week is loaded.

Ben: Alright, I'm reading it right now. You've got... Texas, Missouri. BYU -Utah, Georgia Ole Miss, Oregon -Ohio State. So that shine's gone. Alabama -LSU, that doesn't look as good as it did.

Ben: Kentucky, Tennessee. There's two ranked teams. I'm scrolling down Miami.

Caleb Call: Honestly, that week's kind of falling apart.

Ben: know That week.

Caleb Call: Bama, LSU, Oregon, Ohio State.

Ben: It's Miami -Notre Dame, though. That's the tough thing. is Okay.

Caleb Call: So honestly.

Ben: Every other game felt...

Caleb Call: The winner would be what you Notre Dame. Probably gets to decide who gets game day that week.

Ben: Yeah, it's kind of a tough one I If you may be a there's a... I guess they already know it. What channel has the Utah BYU game?

Caleb Call: No, we won't find out. yeah ESPN, I think, gets to pick four games at the start of the year. Obviously, they pick BYU Notre Dame. I would have. guess they picked byu utah which means it'll be on an espn channel not sure which

Ben: I was just wondering if big big noon potentially came into Salt Lake for the.

Caleb Call: Absolutely.

Ben: holy war twos and

Caleb Call: No, I don't think they will But, yeah, I mean, if BYU beats Notre Dame, they could get game day. Houston beating Utah would alter that still.

Ben: Yeah.

Caleb Call: um If they're both undefeated, I think there's a... Probably a pretty good shot, I think. get it again in the state of Utah.

Ben: yeah Yeah, so it looks like at the beginning of the year, it looked like there was three or four games, all Oregon, Ohio State. And then Alabama, LSU, Miami, Notre Dame. It looked like all three of those games were probably going to get it above BYU -Utah. And now it just looks like... The only one that's above it is Miami Notre Dame. so

Caleb Call: Yeah, there's another sneaky game there, Texas -Missouri. If they both keep winning, that's going to be a top seven or six matchup too. so There's a few other games that could compete.

Ben: Missouris

Caleb Call: Iowa Northwestern. Those guys can keep one and two. You never know.

Ben: Iowa's schedule is actually really light. they they are They're a sneaky college football playoff team. They only have the one loss to Ohio State. they Really, I think they'll be favored in the rest of their games.

Caleb Call: Their toughest game left is Northwestern.

Ben: you could go

Caleb Call: They got Nebraska to end the year, but...

Ben: Yeah, like Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if they're 11 and 1 so

Caleb Call: Yeah, they're scheduled.

Ben: Iowa. I was a a funny team. but So anyways

Caleb Call: All right, well, we'll, uh... Catch you guys again later in the week for our preview, BYU -Notre Dame, Utah -Colorado, a bunch of other fun games too.

Caleb Call: And, yeah, we'll –

Ben: Go Utes!

Caleb Call: Appreciate you guys giving us a bye week last week and coming back strong for this week. Go Cougs.
