Creating the Future: Ventures and Imperfections
00:00:00
Speaker
Leonard Sweet Sweet said the future is not something we enter.
00:00:04
Speaker
The future is something we create.
00:00:06
Speaker
And so in today's podcast, I really want to take some time to share some light on the topic of starting something new, you know, of getting those creative juices flowing, whether it's a business project, creative endeavor.
00:00:22
Speaker
Ministry assignment, you know, what have you dream vision.
00:00:26
Speaker
I want to explore the process of taking that first step into the unknown to illuminate the path forward.
00:00:34
Speaker
So grab your flashlight and let's embark on this journey together.
00:00:40
Speaker
Through self-development and spiritual growth, take the next step in life, love, and your leadership through the Mixing Up podcast with your host, Sylvester Mixon.
00:00:51
Speaker
Hey, let's get ready to get empowered.
00:00:56
Speaker
So hear me as an entrepreneur, church planner, dreamer, visionary, pastor, father, etc.
00:01:06
Speaker
But my disclaimer is I'm not perfect and I'm not an expert.
00:01:10
Speaker
But here's what I know.
00:01:13
Speaker
Startups, dreams, visions, they all face many challenges, especially in the beginning stages of development.
00:01:20
Speaker
And I've listed a few things that I believe are good for taking note of.
00:01:26
Speaker
That can literally be challenges or hindrances to the growth of your church plant, your vision, your startup, your your dream, your
Overcoming Procrastination and Building the Right Team
00:01:36
Speaker
And that is number one, procrastination.
00:01:39
Speaker
You know, and I've always said that procrastination is the assassination of your dream in slow motion.
00:01:45
Speaker
Like you'll be putting off what you tomorrow for what you could do today over and over and over until you just get started.
00:01:54
Speaker
Sometimes you just got to just take the risk and get going.
00:01:57
Speaker
Just get something out there.
00:01:59
Speaker
It's not perfect, but you're just getting started.
00:02:02
Speaker
A lot of professional procrastinators are procrastinators because they're perfectionist.
00:02:08
Speaker
It's just got to be perfect.
00:02:10
Speaker
Let me let me tell you something.
00:02:12
Speaker
It's not going to be perfect, even when you put it out there and think it's perfect because you're just starting.
00:02:17
Speaker
You're just getting going.
00:02:21
Speaker
You know, the other thing is finding the right people.
00:02:25
Speaker
Startups need people with the right skills to survive and grow.
00:02:29
Speaker
And let me tell you, often the right people come after you become the right person.
00:02:35
Speaker
So, number one, take time to lead you first.
00:02:41
Speaker
Another thing is just poor management skill.
00:02:43
Speaker
Like startups need effective management to make the right decisions in order to.
00:02:50
Speaker
Cause this thing to get off the ground to go, you know, and so again, I go back to really investing and taking time to pour into your own leadership.
00:02:59
Speaker
And I suggest really sitting down and getting honest with yourself about your weaknesses, get honest with yourself about any insecurities that you may have that you need to deal with.
00:03:09
Speaker
That could make you non-attractive to others that could repel people from you because your insecurities are repellent.
00:03:20
Speaker
They get in the way, you know, and so you want to deal with those grow through those.
Addressing Personal Weaknesses and Strategic Planning
00:03:24
Speaker
But the difference between those who see their startup, see their vision, their dream, their drive, go to the next level are those who actually deal with those insecurities or weaknesses that could undermine your dreams from moving forward.
00:03:37
Speaker
So remember, I think it goes back to the first principle.
00:03:40
Speaker
Take time to lead you.
00:03:42
Speaker
And you may do that by putting in a growth plan, a personal growth and development plan for yourself.
00:03:48
Speaker
Something that looks like what books am I going to read?
00:03:51
Speaker
Who am I going to add as my mentors for this year?
00:03:55
Speaker
What conferences am I going to attend to this year that deal with my specific area or that enhance my leadership skills?
00:04:03
Speaker
You know, what podcast am I going to start listening to?
00:04:09
Speaker
Another thing is lack of planning, you know, no vision plan or guide, you know.
00:04:16
Speaker
Where are we going?
00:04:17
Speaker
Where are we going to be in the next three to five years?
00:04:20
Speaker
You need a plan in place.
00:04:22
Speaker
There's a passage in scripture that says he who plans to build but doesn't count up the cost.
00:04:31
Speaker
You know, otherwise people will laugh at him and say that he started building and couldn't finish.
00:04:36
Speaker
And so you don't want what you're doing to fail and be a mockery because you didn't.
00:04:43
Speaker
Prepare yourself or properly plan.
00:04:45
Speaker
And the same thing is another thing I wrote down was financial management.
00:04:49
Speaker
And I think it kind of flows into that same thing.
00:04:52
Speaker
Having a strict budget now and starting strict on that budget is that you can't you can't eat up your seed.
00:05:00
Speaker
You know, you've got to make sure that you put a plan in place that tells your money where to go or your money is just going to be going everywhere.
00:05:07
Speaker
You know what I mean?
00:05:09
Speaker
You know, competing with others.
00:05:10
Speaker
I think that comparison is the thief of joy.
00:05:14
Speaker
Now, while in business, there is a degree of competition.
Budgeting, Competition, and Progress
00:05:18
Speaker
Obviously, there is you do need to embrace taking note of what others are doing in the industry that you are in.
00:05:28
Speaker
But you don't need to fall by the wayside of just getting stuck or depressed or drowned in sorrow about getting stuck.
00:05:35
Speaker
Comparison and how much better they are than you know, you know, look at what they're doing.
00:05:41
Speaker
Take some notes and see how you can implement a few things that will help you to get off the ground and use it as encouragement.
00:05:48
Speaker
Use it as motivation, but don't use it as an energy trainer.
00:05:54
Speaker
Simon Sinek said we achieve more when we chase the dream instead of chasing the competition.
00:06:01
Speaker
And so chase your dream.
00:06:03
Speaker
Don't chase your competition.
00:06:05
Speaker
You know, Walt Disney said it this way.
00:06:06
Speaker
He said the way to get started is to quit talking and begin doing.
00:06:11
Speaker
And so how do we do that?
00:06:12
Speaker
Let me give you just a few steps that I wrote down.
00:06:14
Speaker
I think that'll be a blessing.
00:06:16
Speaker
If you're going to start this thing in the dark and remember that it's it's not an overnight success.
00:06:24
Speaker
Those are often shooting stars.
00:06:27
Speaker
You know, we're shooting stars or dying stars.
00:06:29
Speaker
And so, you know, it's going to take some time, some effort, some energy, some drive, some stick to it, if this some faithfulness, some prayer.
00:06:37
Speaker
You know, the right connections and company, getting the right people in, wrong people out.
00:06:43
Speaker
Let me give you a few steps.
00:06:44
Speaker
Number one, define your goals.
00:06:46
Speaker
Imagine standing in a dark room.
00:06:49
Speaker
You need to have a clear vision of where you want to go before you can take the first step.
00:06:54
Speaker
And so defining your goals with clarity and specificity is going to be key.
00:06:59
Speaker
You know, it's like turning on a light switch in the darkness.
00:07:02
Speaker
Suddenly everything becomes clearer and you can see the path of head ahead.
00:07:07
Speaker
That's what defining your goals is going to do.
00:07:09
Speaker
So you got to picture yourself, you know, like with a flashlight pointing it toward your goals.
00:07:15
Speaker
Each beam of that light represents a specific goal that you want to achieve.
00:07:21
Speaker
Number two, work your why.
00:07:22
Speaker
You know, Simon Sinek says every dream vision leadership starts with why, why, you know, why am I doing this?
00:07:32
Speaker
You know, what is my why my drive that my my passion, my purpose?
00:07:38
Speaker
You know, people don't buy what you do.
00:07:40
Speaker
They buy why you do what you do.
00:07:43
Speaker
And when you become more centered with why you do this, why is this important?
00:07:48
Speaker
Why does this matter?
00:07:51
Speaker
Then what you do simply proves what you believe.
00:07:55
Speaker
Remember, the why is always over the what.
00:08:00
Speaker
And I would also add getting centered on the who you're becoming is always before the do that you're doing.
00:08:11
Speaker
And so your why purpose gives you working power like it gives you that that strength that when you get in adversity, because, you know, as the good scriptures say, I love to quote it in the book of Proverbs, adversity will have a day.
00:08:26
Speaker
And if you faint in that day of adversity, then you're not ready for the next level.
00:08:30
Speaker
You're not ready for that next dimension quite yet.
00:08:33
Speaker
There's still got to be some prepping that you got to do.
00:08:34
Speaker
There's still some things that you need to get more centered with, particularly your why, so that when that day of adversity comes, your strength isn't small, but your strength is strong.
00:08:46
Speaker
Like on that day of adversity, what you want to do is use that day as a day to advance and as a day that adds to the testimony of your why.
00:08:57
Speaker
So whenever you feel like quitting, revisit why you got started and you'll find the strength and you'll get the grit that you need to stay in the race and keep going.
00:09:06
Speaker
Listen, because you are going somewhere.
00:09:08
Speaker
You got you got work to do.
00:09:10
Speaker
God didn't put all of this inside of you for nothing.
00:09:12
Speaker
God doesn't keep waking you and stirring your heart.
00:09:16
Speaker
And then you you'll hear a message or you hear some motivation or whatever and you get fired up.
00:09:21
Speaker
That's not for nothing.
00:09:22
Speaker
The fact that you have a fire is because you have a future.
Defining Boundaries and Embracing Courage
00:09:26
Speaker
Number three, outline the scope.
00:09:29
Speaker
Just as a flashlight has a limited scope, it's important to outline the scope of what you're trying to do.
00:09:35
Speaker
Like, what do you want to achieve?
00:09:37
Speaker
You know, what are the boundaries and the limitations?
00:09:40
Speaker
You're not trying to hit everything is where a lot of people go wrong in business.
00:09:44
Speaker
They're trying to target every demographic.
00:09:46
Speaker
They're trying to get everybody know find who you best connect with.
00:09:54
Speaker
And resonate with and go after that or them.
00:09:58
Speaker
and watch the rest come as a result.
00:10:00
Speaker
You'll find that you'll end up reaching way beyond that because you actually focused on something.
00:10:06
Speaker
I heard the acronym for focus as follow one course until successful.
00:10:11
Speaker
And honestly, this is a rule of life.
00:10:13
Speaker
Like a lot of people don't get anything done because they're just, they're too wide, they're too broad.
00:10:18
Speaker
I heard it said this way that a jack of all trades is a master of none.
00:10:22
Speaker
It's because you're trying to do too many things at once.
00:10:26
Speaker
Master something and then add something else after you've begun mastery.
00:10:33
Speaker
But don't just add it all at one time because now you're not able to accomplish or be efficient in anything.
00:10:40
Speaker
And so this step outlining the scope is really all about understanding your boundaries and the parameters by which you're going to begin to operate.
00:10:48
Speaker
That, you know, you can't be in 50 different places at once.
00:10:51
Speaker
You need to get one place started, build some type of foundation and some type of of systems and structures in place and personnel so that you can expand.
00:11:05
Speaker
We're going to be in multiple cities with who?
00:11:08
Speaker
You haven't built anything here yet.
00:11:10
Speaker
And so you want to make sure that you build and outline your scope.
00:11:13
Speaker
Where am I going to get started?
00:11:14
Speaker
What are my boundaries here?
00:11:17
Speaker
It is literally like trying to assemble a flashlight without the batteries.
00:11:24
Speaker
Like you need to know the scope of your project before you can power it up and get it going.
00:11:29
Speaker
Number four, budgeting and timeline.
00:11:31
Speaker
Now let's talk briefly about budgeting and timeline.
00:11:35
Speaker
The batteries that power your flashlight.
00:11:38
Speaker
Like you need to allocate some resources.
00:11:39
Speaker
You need to put aside some money, set aside resources and set a realistic timeline, a due date for your project.
00:11:47
Speaker
Write out a clear budget and be strict on that budget.
00:11:51
Speaker
This will ensure that you have the necessary resources to keep your journey lit.
00:11:56
Speaker
Yeah, you want to keep that journey lit.
00:11:58
Speaker
Here's a business startup fact is many successful businesses started with a minimal budget and a well-planned timeline.
00:12:08
Speaker
It's all about making the most of what you have.
00:12:11
Speaker
Like at the beginning, you're not going to have everything.
00:12:13
Speaker
I remember when starting UCC, man, I didn't have any money for real.
00:12:20
Speaker
You know, that was coming out of my personal money.
00:12:23
Speaker
And, you know, I use what I had.
00:12:26
Speaker
And, you know, the folks that were starting it with me, we use the things that we had.
00:12:31
Speaker
Like, I mean, we use makeshift.
00:12:34
Speaker
A makeshift mechanic garage with oil spills on the floor to open our first church.
00:12:39
Speaker
We use card table chairs and my aunt donated a podium that somebody had made out of wood in their garage.
00:12:48
Speaker
You know, we just started where we were when they bought a really cheap hundred and fifty dollar sound system from Best Buy.
00:12:54
Speaker
And we had church we built with that.
00:12:57
Speaker
We were and we loved it.
00:12:59
Speaker
So you have to start where you are.
00:13:01
Speaker
Everything may not be perfect, but do your best to make it excellent.
00:13:06
Speaker
Number five, take the first step.
00:13:09
Speaker
Like much of your momentum and your energy is not going to happen until you get going.
00:13:15
Speaker
Like you got to take that first step.
00:13:18
Speaker
Even if it's some sense of a risk, you've got to take that first step.
00:13:22
Speaker
Like Winston Churchill said, fear is a reaction, but courage is a decision.
00:13:27
Speaker
You have to have courage to take that first step.
00:13:29
Speaker
You know, it means that you're you are stepping into this lesson today is about it.
00:13:36
Speaker
It started in the dark.
00:13:37
Speaker
And so you take that first step in the darkness, just like stepping into a dark room.
00:13:42
Speaker
It can be intimidating at first, but with each step, you become more accustomed or acclimated to that environment.
00:13:48
Speaker
So you have to embrace the unknown and trust that each step brings you closer to your goal or your destination.
00:13:56
Speaker
You'll never get there if you don't start stepping.
00:13:59
Speaker
The Bible says, 2 Corinthians 5, 7, we walk by faith and not by sight.
00:14:05
Speaker
Think of it like exploring a dark cave, which each step you discover something new and exciting.
00:14:11
Speaker
The darkness becomes less daunting as you navigate through it.
00:14:15
Speaker
So you got to get going.
00:14:17
Speaker
Whatever you do, get going.
00:14:19
Speaker
Get your motivation in the morning and get out there and get going.
00:14:23
Speaker
Number six, learn to adapt.
Adaptability and Celebrating Success
00:14:26
Speaker
So as you move forward, you have to be prepared to adapt to the unexpected.
00:14:31
Speaker
Like I always tell the church, one of our core values is flexibility.
00:14:35
Speaker
And so I tell them, blessed are the flexible so they will not be for they will not be bent out of shape.
00:14:40
Speaker
It's so important to know that sometimes the path won't be as straight as you initially thought.
00:14:46
Speaker
So you have just like adjusting the angle on the flashlight so you can see better.
00:14:52
Speaker
Adaptability is the key to overcoming obstacles.
00:14:55
Speaker
This is that you've got to realize is obstacles at the end of the day are really opportunities.
00:15:00
Speaker
And so you've got to sit down and say, OK, where's the opportunity in this?
00:15:04
Speaker
Do I need to change some stuff?
00:15:06
Speaker
Do I need to add something?
00:15:07
Speaker
Take something away?
00:15:09
Speaker
Be more efficient.
00:15:10
Speaker
Like ask yourself those hard questions and see how you can win, you know, through being flexible.
00:15:16
Speaker
And then number seven, celebrate your progress.
00:15:21
Speaker
You got to celebrate every step to keep continue to give yourself that energy and that motivation to keep going.
00:15:26
Speaker
Every small victory is like a beam of that flashlight piercing the darkness, lighting your path and reminding you how far you've come.
00:15:35
Speaker
Sometimes you got to take a moment and reflect, look back.
00:15:38
Speaker
And where you started, look at the pictures, take plenty of pictures, look at the videos, look at how you dressed, how you spoke then and how much better you've gotten, how much you've grown, how far you've come.
00:15:51
Speaker
Look at how far you have come.
00:15:54
Speaker
It's important because it will give you the energy.
00:15:57
Speaker
It will give you the strength, the encouragement to navigate forward.
00:16:06
Speaker
So these are some steps to navigating in the dark.
00:16:08
Speaker
Remember, anything great, dream, vision, business, startup, venture, it starts in the dark.
00:16:17
Speaker
You don't see it all in the beginning.
00:16:19
Speaker
You may you have a dream.
00:16:21
Speaker
You have a vision.
00:16:22
Speaker
And it starts to come together that as you walk it out, God blesses it to to work out.
00:16:31
Speaker
And so embrace the unknown, define your goals, take that first step.
00:16:35
Speaker
And before you know it, you'll be lighting the world up with a dream that will bless people the world over.
00:16:44
Speaker
Thanks for tuning in.
00:16:46
Speaker
I'm Sylvester Mixon and this is Mixing It Up.
00:16:50
Speaker
Hey, I'm Sylvester Mixon.
00:16:51
Speaker
You've been listening to Mixing It Up.
