00:00:01
Speaker
Through self-development and spiritual growth, take the next step in life, love, and your leadership through the Mixing It Up podcast with your host, Sylvester Mixon.
00:00:11
Speaker
Hey, let's get ready to get empowered.
00:00:18
Speaker
And, you know, before we jump in, I want you to know that I see you.
00:00:23
Speaker
I see you scrolling social media, you know, looking at everybody else's highlight reel while still sitting on your dream.
00:00:32
Speaker
I see you in that job that you've outgrown.
00:00:35
Speaker
I have been there where I've worked for a company looking out the 11th floor window.
00:00:42
Speaker
You know, staying because it was comfortable, scared to take that next step and.
00:00:49
Speaker
imagining in my mind day after day, as I look out this window and as I'm working for someone else, a great opportunity, great benefits.
00:00:59
Speaker
I'm thankful for all of that.
00:01:00
Speaker
That's not what I'm saying, but I have been in that place where I have outgrown it and it is time for me to take the next step forward in faith with God, but stuck because I'm afraid.
The Role of Courage in Pursuing Purpose
00:01:16
Speaker
I see you with that business idea, that calling in ministry, that relationship conversation that is going to literally level up your relationship.
00:01:28
Speaker
But you keep putting it off.
00:01:30
Speaker
And today we're going to talk about why.
00:01:34
Speaker
I want to talk today about the courage crises.
00:01:39
Speaker
And why playing it safe is literally killing your purpose.
00:01:45
Speaker
You know what's crazy?
00:01:47
Speaker
We live in the most connected, most resource, most opportunity rich generation in human history.
00:01:53
Speaker
You can learn anything on YouTube, y'all.
00:01:56
Speaker
You can start a business with a smartphone.
00:01:57
Speaker
You can reach millions with a message.
00:02:00
Speaker
But here's the truth.
00:02:02
Speaker
Even though we're the most connected, when you think about it, we're also the most paralyzed generation.
00:02:09
Speaker
I heard this once that the absence of fear is not courage.
00:02:15
Speaker
The presence of fear is actually where courage begins.
00:02:19
Speaker
And if I could read that to you one more time, it says the absence of fear is not courage.
00:02:26
Speaker
The presence of fear is actually where courage begins.
00:02:30
Speaker
And the truth of the matter is, and I've experienced it and you've experienced it, if you really think about it, most of what we have done, new, successful, big steps, big opportunities, new doors has been done afraid.
00:02:50
Speaker
And, you know, I tell my church all the time, if you're going to step into your next, then you have to do it afraid.
00:03:00
Speaker
Yeah, the Bible says in Second Corinthians five, seven, we walk by faith and not by our sight.
00:03:08
Speaker
And the truth of the matter is, is we're not lacking information.
00:03:12
Speaker
We're lacking activation.
00:03:14
Speaker
And, you know, there's a gap between
Bridging Information and Action
00:03:16
Speaker
And the gap between information and activation is really all about courage.
00:03:23
Speaker
If I could show you an example or paint two pictures for you today.
00:03:27
Speaker
Picture one would be you're at the edge of the pool and it's your first time and the water looks cold.
00:03:32
Speaker
Everybody's watching.
00:03:33
Speaker
Your heart is pounding.
00:03:36
Speaker
You know, you should jump in.
00:03:38
Speaker
But in your mind is what if I flop?
00:03:42
Speaker
What if what if I get scared and panic?
00:03:46
Speaker
What if people laugh?
00:03:47
Speaker
And so you don't jump.
00:03:50
Speaker
And it's probably was me.
00:03:51
Speaker
You walk back to your chair or, you know, you start scrolling your phone or you tell yourself, you know, maybe I'll do it next time.
00:03:59
Speaker
But next time never comes.
00:04:00
Speaker
And 20 years later, you still on the edge, still dry, still wondering what if.
00:04:07
Speaker
Listen, same thing I'm telling myself, go on and get them swimming lessons.
00:04:13
Speaker
You don't want to be stuck in what if and over a multiple years.
00:04:19
Speaker
or a over several different things that you have not taken that next step on.
00:04:28
Speaker
That's picture one.
00:04:30
Speaker
You got the same fear and your same heart pounding heart.
00:04:34
Speaker
But this time you jump in.
00:04:37
Speaker
You splash, right?
00:04:39
Speaker
It's cold and you come up gasping, but you also come up alive.
00:04:44
Speaker
You come up different.
00:04:45
Speaker
You come up with a brand new knowledge.
00:04:48
Speaker
Listen, that the water won't kill you, but staying dry just might.
00:04:55
Speaker
This is the difference between two pictures.
00:05:00
Speaker
And the difference between these two pictures isn't talent.
00:05:03
Speaker
It isn't privilege.
00:05:04
Speaker
It's not even opportunity.
00:05:08
Speaker
Listen to me carefully is a muscle that you must work every day.
00:05:13
Speaker
Did you catch that?
00:05:14
Speaker
Courage is a muscle.
00:05:17
Speaker
And if it's going to get stronger, it's a muscle that you have to work out and exercise every day of your life.
00:05:24
Speaker
Here's what nobody is talking about.
Cultural and Spiritual Courage Crisis
00:05:27
Speaker
We are literally in a courage crisis.
00:05:30
Speaker
Yes, in 2025, and I'm podcasting this from America, but literally in the world in 2025, it is a courage crisis.
00:05:41
Speaker
It's not just personal.
00:05:49
Speaker
A 2023 study from the American Psychological Association found that 68 percent of adults age 18 to 34 admit they avoid making major life decisions because of fear of feeling.
00:06:05
Speaker
They're afraid to fail.
00:06:09
Speaker
That's more than two out of every three people.
00:06:13
Speaker
Walking around here with some type of chronic fear that they're not going to succeed.
00:06:20
Speaker
And these same people spend an average of seven hours a day consuming other people's lives through reels.
00:06:30
Speaker
Through social media videos, tick tocks.
00:06:38
Speaker
We will watch somebody else live courageously for seven hours.
00:06:44
Speaker
But won't live courageously ourselves for seven minutes.
Overcoming Comfort Addiction
00:06:51
Speaker
This is what I call comfort addiction.
00:06:56
Speaker
We've become so addicted to comfort.
00:06:59
Speaker
That we would rather be comfortable and miserable than uncomfortable and fulfilled.
00:07:04
Speaker
Somebody say do it afraid.
00:07:08
Speaker
It's time to do it afraid.
00:07:10
Speaker
Here's the truth, y'all.
00:07:13
Speaker
Your lack of courage is not just costing you.
00:07:18
Speaker
It's costing the people who need what's in you.
00:07:23
Speaker
The business that you won't start.
00:07:25
Speaker
Somebody needs that solution that God's put on the inside of you.
00:07:29
Speaker
That book that you won't write.
00:07:31
Speaker
Somebody needs that message.
00:07:34
Speaker
That's been marinating through your personal testimonies and the timeless truths of the word of God.
00:07:40
Speaker
That conversation you won't have.
00:07:42
Speaker
Somebody needs that truth because relationships need to be healed and restored.
00:07:48
Speaker
That dream that you won't chase.
00:07:49
Speaker
Somebody needs that inspiration.
00:07:52
Speaker
The Bible declares in Proverbs 29, 25, fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord will be kept safe.
Breaking Free from Fear's Trap
00:08:03
Speaker
You know what that word snare means when you study?
00:08:06
Speaker
It means a prison.
00:08:08
Speaker
It means a cage and fear will always imprison you.
00:08:13
Speaker
You think it's protecting you, but it's really imprisoning you and not just you.
00:08:18
Speaker
It's imprisoning everyone who needs the free version of you.
00:08:23
Speaker
Listen, you got to do it afraid.
00:08:26
Speaker
Ask God to give you the courage.
00:08:28
Speaker
And then when God gives you that courage and he will, you got to take that step.
00:08:34
Speaker
Take that step into your purpose.
00:08:35
Speaker
Take that step into your destiny.
00:08:38
Speaker
Take that step into who God has called you to be.
00:08:41
Speaker
You are bigger than your past, your failures, your shame, your mistakes.
00:08:46
Speaker
You're bigger than that.
00:08:48
Speaker
And so here's what I want you to sit with as we get ready to go to break.
00:08:55
Speaker
What would you do if you weren't afraid?
00:08:59
Speaker
Think about that now.
00:09:01
Speaker
Not what do you wish you could do?
00:09:05
Speaker
Not what you would be cool with someday.
00:09:12
Speaker
But what would you do like this week, today, right now, if fear wasn't in the equation?
00:09:26
Speaker
Hey, I'm Sylvester Mixon.
00:09:27
Speaker
You've been listening to Mixing It Up.
00:09:29
