Speaker: Welcome, everyone, to Episodes Unscripted. I am Scott Feltz, joined as always by Shauna Fretwell and Charlie Harkin. All right.

Speaker: And also, we are welcoming a guest for the first time, the one and only Aaron Harkin. Thank you, Aaron, for joining us. ah The game is, since our guest here is a librarian, I thought something book-related Because that's all you know libraries are, right?

Speaker: No, but okay. Checking in and out books. You can squash that myth if you'd like. i mean That's not all we do. Computers and... Check out the iPads.

Speaker: Check out the iPads. You're tracking. ah Do you still carry DVDs? VHS? No. I got rid of those. They are required to have glasses and when they look at you, they...

Speaker: No, we're not. um what do you Of the four of us, who has the masters um in the industry that they're in? All right. Moving on.

Speaker: Don't you have two? Thanks, Shawna. I got you. Or am I wrong with that? I do have two masters. All right, definitely going to move on. Masters of puppets.

Speaker: wow i have a I have a list here of some movies, some that you probably definitely know and know the answer to, and some that you might not.

Speaker: And the idea is it's called ah book or blockbuster. Oh, okay. Is the movie an adaptation of a book, or is it not?

Speaker: Okay. So some of these should be, you know... Pretty easy. But we'll see. After those headlines, don't know. You might not know the movie, so for some of them, I think they start out pretty easy.

Speaker: So you read the title and we're to I'll read the title and if you don't know the movie, I'll read a brief synopsis. cool And you have to figure out if it's an adaptation of a book. Okay, we ready? Everybody know the game?

Speaker: Yep. Okay. I just have to confirm. Sometimes not everybody gets the rules the first time around. I'll go last. sort Come to me last. Okay. Number one. Because you don't get it. The Prestige.

Speaker: ah Rival magicians in the 19th century engage in an escalating battle of illusions, deception, and obsession. Didn't we watch that?

Speaker: Awesome. Awesome movie. Yeah? Yeah. oh I don't know. It sounds like a John Grisham title. Oh my gosh. It's a Chris Nolan. It is incredible. You gotta watch it a lot of times to get it.

Speaker: okay Hugh Jackman and ah the other guy with the lisp. Batman. Christian Bale.

Speaker: He has a lisp. I didn't know that. Or he's acting. Very good actor. Okay. can Is it a book? Is it based on a book or not? I don't think so.

Speaker: I think it's just a movie, but that's not a book I would read anyway. You got one just movie.

Speaker: Yeah. yeah think it is a I think it is a book. You think it is? I'm going to say book, Shauna. There is a book called The Siege, and so...

Speaker: so they sound similar so in my head I'm like wait because that's all it takes a similar sounding title you're just going to say movie no book if it's definitely movie I'm going to be so excited because I want to read it now okay so we got two for no book one for book Chuck you are off to a hot start nice it is a book it is a book okay by Christopher Priest okay All right.

Speaker: Man, that means I got to read that book. You got to read it. It's a good one. Okay, number two. The Road to Perdition.

Speaker: That's a book. A mob enforcer and his son seek revenge after their family is murdered. That's definitely a book. Do you know that? I know that movie. Well, don't say that.

Speaker: Then they'll know. oh right Well, you asked me, do I know that? I was hoping you'd... Wait, they're all movies. What bluffing this whole thing? They're all movies. They're all movies. It was based on a book.

Speaker: Right. right, all right, right. Okay. Y'all know who's in that movie? No. Tom Hanks? I'm sure you'll tell us. Who? Tom Hanks.

Speaker: Tom Hanks. Yeah. America's dad. Okay, that one's a book. what Number three. Well, Shauna said it was. Yeah. But now she knows.

Speaker: Spoiler. To mask. So she's the one that didn't know how the game was played. Normally it's me. I did in the first round and then somehow I didn't in the second round. Okay, number three. Jurassic Park.

Speaker: Cloned dinosaurs at an amusement park break free leading to chaos. I feel like I didn't have to read that. didn't. feel like you guys knew. By the way, real quick. these These Lost World sequels have gotten out of hand.

Speaker: We've got like five of them now. You know, there's another one coming out right now with Scarlett Johansson. Scarlett Johansson. It is crazy. What's it called? Rejuvenated or something. Jurassic World. A new world.

Speaker: They got to stop taking them so far. It's crazy. Like, there a lot no, you can't beat the dinosaurs. They're beating that dead horse because it keeps spitting out money. oh you know We already beat them. They're gone.

Speaker: Is it based on a book?

Speaker: I don't remember that No one knows this. No, I don't think. Nice. I'm going yes. Two no and one yes from Charlie. Charlie, you're off to a fiery start. That is based on a book.

Speaker: Are you looking all these A book by ah Michael Crichton. Yeah, a well-known author. Crichton.

Speaker: Nice job. Okay. Wow. We're on a roll. Number four. Maybe I'm the librarian. Nope. I'm a children's librarian, just so you know. Okay. That's fair. Well, then you'll love this next one.

Speaker: Clifford, the big red dog. I'm kidding. I'm kidding. That's not that good. Oh, wow. That was good. That made me so happy. kidding. I'm kidding. Do you know somebody around here just named their child Emily Elizabeth?

Speaker: Wow. Cute. Who's that? From Clifford. Well, don't say who it is. No, don't say who it is. Who named him that or who was Emily Elizabeth? No, who's Emily Elizabeth? The one that has Clifford.

Speaker: The little girl that has Clifford. Oh, I thought asking. remember T-Bone. Okay. Number four. Fight Club.

Speaker: Do you want me to read the synopsis? No. Okay. Brad Pitt. It's a good synopsis. Maybe.

Speaker: Can I read this and enough? It's so good. No, i want to hear it. Yeah, go ahead. I had chat GPT right at all. An insomniac office worker creates an underground fight club leading to an anarchy and self-discovery.

Speaker: Leading to anarchy and self-discovery.

Speaker: Feels accurate. Fight club, is based on a book?

Speaker: I'm going yes. We got one yes? So far, they've all been. I'm saying no. forget They have all been so far. I don't think so. but I swear it was, but I could be dead wrong and I'll own it. Are you doing that thing though, Chuck, where you're like, it's been in the answer from C three times now. It can't be C again.

Speaker: Why are you doing that with your shoulders? You start going back into racing. Two can couldn't have been C. Is it based on a book or no? Shauna says yes. I say no.

Speaker: think You say no. You say no as well? I say no as well. It's based on a book. Oh my gosh. See, nobody's original. It all comes from a book. o And you should always read the book before you watch the movie if you can know better. Oh, yep.

Speaker: Here we go. Scott, you know what? You've seen any movies lately that are based off books? Nope. Well, now that I have some of these. i hope it's next. Go ahead.

Speaker: I'll bring it up. Number The secret in their eyes. A retired investigator reopens a haunting murder case, uncovering long buried truths.

Speaker: That's pretty generic. I've never heard of it. But this is based on a book? That's the question. It's gotta be. It sounds like every thriller you'd buy, like Kroger.

Speaker: So we're saying we're all saying yes? Book or DVD? What are you buying at Kroger? You know they have a section of books, Charlie. But it's like really obscure books. The paperback.

Speaker: Oh, with the man. The magazines. Yeah. Next to like the 10 devotions for women. Right. And the westerns. Don't forget the westerns. And then right beside that is the toothpaste.

Speaker: Okay. ah So what are we saying? Yes. Book. I'll go book.

Speaker: If it's not a book, nobody saw that movie. Shauna, definitely. It might be. Sure. It's a book. Okay, it is it is based on a book. But no one's seen that movie, so we'll move on. no Number six, Never Let Me Go.

Speaker: ah Students at an idyllic... Idyllic? You okay, Scott? I don't know. I don't know if I'm saying that one right. Man, you are struggling reading today. have to read so much in this show.

Speaker: Boarding school slowly realized they are clones created for an organ donation. Wow. Yikes. Yikes. Sounds like a book. We got one book. What was the name of it?

Speaker: Never Let Me Go. Stop Googling it, Charlie.

Speaker: Cheating.

Speaker: I can, I'll let chat GPT to tell me who the lead actors are in these. Yeah. I want to know who's been in that.

Speaker: What was it doing that? Okay. ah but But what do we think? I'm going no book. I don't know, we're on a streak down with the books. I'm going book. I was gonna say no book.

Speaker: Unless it's like those divergent, that Divergent series. That's what it sounds like. Ooh, remember reading that first one. There is a sci-fi world out there. Right, that's what I'm like, Carey Mulligan, Andrew Garfield, and Keira Knightley.

Speaker: What? Wow, that's an impressive cast. Yeah. ah So we got a book from Aaron. Yes, no from you guys. Yes, Shauna. I'm saying yes.

Speaker: We got another yes. Two yeses, Shauna. I guess I'm going to say no just to keep it interesting. Okay. It is a book. Okay.

Speaker: Are we keeping score? Are you going to put any in here that aren't books? at this way My shuffle was a little off. you know I'm like Spotify shuffling your songs. Just give me a mail. Number seven, Inception.

Speaker: A thief who can enter dreams is tasked with planting an idea in a person's mind. Well, if the first one was a book, I think this one's a book. The first what? I think Christopher Nolan's normally are based on books. Yeah.

Speaker: I'm going to go book on this one. You're all going book? Yeah. Chuck, I need a verification on that.

Speaker: Gosh. I hope it is a book because that's just such a cool thing that somebody came up with and wrote about. Okay, book. Book it, Dano. That is not adapted from book.

Speaker: Wow. Oh, man. We did. Wait, didn't he? Well, he or some writer. That's cool. I didn't know that original. means somebody came up with it.

Speaker: Yeah. okay Sorry, love the dream. It's original at some point. He or some writer. Anybody who's listening hasn't seen that. Oh, my gosh. Another incredible one.

Speaker: Number eight, The Matrix. A hacker discovers his reality is a simulation controlled by machines. Pfft.

Speaker: I'll wait till the end. I'm going say no, not a book. Not a book, Shauna. don't think so. Shauna's going no. Chuck? Going solid book. Solid. Yeah?

Speaker: You sound confident in that.

Speaker: Def. Okay. That is not adapted from a book. Don't you feel like that movie has enough of cult following that if it was a book, you'd have seen in somebody's bookshops? We would have heard about it now.

Speaker: Like Lord the Rings. The reason was so confident was because I know the, I guess it's the woman who wrote it. I thought she wrote the book.

Speaker: Okay. Okay. Number nine. Disproved. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. ah ah i love that movie. A man undergoes a procedure to erase memories of his ex-girlfriend. Oh, I'm not reading.

Speaker: I'm not reading. Say it. Did you hear what he said? Yeah. Is it adopted by a book or not? Wait, finish reading. I was reading. Nobody was listening. I'm sorry. I was trying to be cute. It's a bad idea. A man undergoes a procedure to erase memories of his ex-girlfriend but struggles against losing them.

Speaker: Why have I never heard of that? Isn't it Jim Carrey? It's got Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet. It's

Speaker: because you hate Jim Carrey, Erin. I don't hate Jim Carrey. Wow. You're always walking around saying I hate Jim Carrey. That's Tom Cruise. Get it straight. Oh, I'm with you on that one.

Speaker: ah Oh, boy. I can't stand it. Common ground. I will not watch anything with him anymore. Yes, you will. Is it a book? Is it a book? is Yes. That's got to be a book. Yes, yes. Sounds like a great book.

Speaker: Well, that sounds like peer pressure, Erin. It is. Well, that's unfortunate because it is not a book. Is it God, that's disappointing because that would have been a really good one. Okay, number 10. We should write the book.

Speaker: the girl Well, it may we wouldn't be adopted. Does that ever have an adaptation? Do people write books? They do. They do write books off. Yes. Yeah, but that's not what we're trying to figure out here.

Speaker: No, it's just my mind was gone. Another money-making opportunity. The Girl on the Train. Yeah, book. Yes. Wow. Okay, we'll move on.

Speaker: it's Only one I've heard of. now Yeah, it's a book. ah vote both. But you got to be a little deceptive, right? That's what we told Sean. You got to pretend like you don't know if you know the answer. That way you get more points. I got to feel smart at some point.

Speaker: That's fair. Stand your ground. that That long stretch of they were all booked. Okay, number 11. the The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.

Speaker: heard of it Let's hear this description. A man who can only communicate by blinking writes a memoir about his life. Okay, Helen Keller. Let's relax. That sounds like a book. That's ridiculous.

Speaker: He can only communicate. Okay. Wow. um

Speaker: Matthew.

Speaker: right and he can only communicate, how? I don't know. but Blinking. Okay. Kind of like the girl could only communicate by touching her touchpad.

Speaker: Easy. That's so funny. Well, this says a man who can only communicate by blinking. Yeah. I say book.

Speaker: You say book. Yeah. Shauna.

Speaker: I don't know. um That's the point. Yeah.

Speaker: Yeah, it's it could be a book. It could be. What was the name of it? The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. That's got to be a book. That's a crazy story. Yeah, title.

Speaker: You're going book? Yeah. It's a book.

Speaker: Number 12. Put that on the list. how How many are there? few I'll stop naming Stardust was just curious Stardust A young man No A young man What you like him but Another Grosso reference A young man crosses into a magical realm To retrieve a fallen star Only to find it's a living woman Why does that sound familiar Yeah, I think ah either um Jeff Bridges or ah

Speaker: ah Kurt Russell was in this movie. No. Those are not two people I would have pictured for that synopsis. I imagine the hair stardust. Charlie Cox. I've seen the movie.

Speaker: Like, wait, Jeff Bridges, the dude? Michelle Pfeiffer. does what?

Speaker: Michelle Pfeiffer was in it? Michelle Pfeiffer's in it? I miss her as an actress. Grease, too. Oh, my gosh. Fell in love with her there. de White Oleander is my favorite book, and she was in that movie.

Speaker: Batman Returns. Hairspray. and Let's keep going. I'm going no book. That it just sounds weird. No and book.

Speaker: Shauna? Thumbs down. It's a book. Damn it. Wow. Okay, The Big Sleep.

Speaker: A hard-boiled detective gets tangled in a case of blackmail and murder.

Speaker: Sounds like every mystery book. That one's definitely in Kroger. Humphrey Bogart.

Speaker: That's an old movie. With Lauren Bacall. Oh, that's real old. I'd just movie. Just movie? No book. don't think they wrote books back then, did they? No book.

Speaker: No book. That's all they could do. it's a It's a book. It's definitely a book. ah told are so bad at this. Shutter Island. We know.

Speaker: Leonardo DiCaprio, a U.S. marshal, investigates a psychiatric facility on a remote island uncovering dark secrets. Is it a book or not a book? Book.

Speaker: Book. I'll say book. I'm going book. I've actually read it.

Speaker: I think he's lying, but it is a book. It is a book, yes. Just scary book. Yeah, it has a big twist at the end. You don't even know Charlie.

Speaker: um The Fountain with Hugh Jackman. oh Oh. um He cute. A man in three different

Speaker: Timelines. Big word. It was a big word. You did good, Scott. You took your time. You didn't stutter. You paused. There's nothing wrong. There's nothing wrong with silence. It's way it just appeared. Silence is your friend. It was one of those compound words and they can be tough.

Speaker: I'm proud of I'm proud of you. Thank you. I think you should say it again just to prove that you owned that word.

Speaker: A man in three different timelines searches for a way to save the woman he loves.

Speaker: What was the title again? The Fountain. That sounds good. and sounds like a book. Yeah, I say book.

Speaker: Two book, Chuck.

Speaker: I'm going to say no book just because it's not a book.

Speaker: Wow. I'm not keeping up with points. Charlie's winning. Annihilation. Natalie Portman. A biologist enters a mysterious ever-changing zone where the laws of nature don't apply.

Speaker: yeah What's the guy's name that's in that? I always forget his name. ah He was in Ex Machina. He was in the the reboot Star Wars.

Speaker: I don't know. All I have here is Natalie Portman. He was in Moon Knight. He's a really good actor. Okay. I'll go to the end just because I know the answer.

Speaker: No, I want you to go now. It's a book. Okay, he says it's a book. But you haven't read it.

Speaker: I could be leading you all astray. He was really confident earlier and it wasn't. All these books that you think sound great and you've never read them.

Speaker: Ladies, Annihilation, is it ah based on a book?

Speaker: ah Not everybody at once. I have no way to make an educated guess. They're going to cave. No book. No book.

Speaker: Shawna. Three, two. Book. I'm going book. It is a book. Okay. By Jeff Vandermeer. Yeah. Side note on that. Of course. I think it's like two or three.

Speaker: And so everybody's like, when are when are we going to get the movies for the other books? But yet you still haven't read the first one. That doesn't mean I don't know it's a book. Moving on. are always better.

Speaker: Two left. Cloud Atlas. Cloud Atlas. oh Where are you in these? never heard of these. Tom Hanks is in this. I've still never heard of it. Interconnected stories spanning centuries. Explore themes of fate, reincarnation, and resistance.

Speaker: Resistance.

Speaker: Resistance. We're going to need you to take over the the hard reading parts of this. Let him cook. He's a...

Speaker: Wow. You've had a rough day, apparently. That's what we heard. a lot going on. I just got back from a three-hour drive. here We're here, though. I didn't bring the Mountain Dew, but... You didn't get five-hour drive. A five-hour drive. I need a five-hour drive.

Speaker: ah Is it a book or not?

Speaker: I know it's a weird movie, because I remember watching... There's a weird sex scene. Can I say that? There's a weird sex scene in that with Tom Hanks.

Speaker: and I don't like that. I remember. haven't seen the whole movie. don't think of like that. know. He plays a weird oh he's character in the movie. do Well, he was doing it in this.

Speaker: air I mean, the closest I ever saw him doing that was as Forrest with Forrest and Jenny. Yeah. And he didn't know what he was doing there. I know. Aw, come on.

Speaker: Is it a book or not? Cloud Atlas. Book. It sounds like a book, doesn't it? Check. I'll go book. It is a book by David Mitchell.

Speaker: Last one. A Scanner Darkly.

Speaker: In a dystopian future, an undercover agent addicted to a mind-altering drug loses his grip on reality. Can you look that up real quick? Tell us who stars in that. Yeah, Keanu Reeves. Yeah. Also, it features Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrelson, and Winona Ryder.

Speaker: Yeah. Also a good cast.

Speaker: I mean, you could have done Girl Interrupted. You could have done it Ends With Us. She's mad at the line-up. I'm surprised we didn't get The Notebook. It's of Scott's faves. You could have done all those. I know those.

Speaker: That's a book. it's that I know Winona Ryder. She only does movies that are books. to Write it down. Was Stranger Things is a book?

Speaker: Oh, spoiler. That's a question. Because she's in that. and Now they've made books from that. So they do do it. I said yes, they do that.

Speaker: Oh. I'm going book.

Speaker: Shauna? Book. Aaron, you said book? Yep. It is a book by Philip Dick.

Speaker: Wait. What did I just hear? acabas philip Philip Dick. how too wrote You got so much louder when you said his last name. Yeah. yeah That's all I heard. He felt so confident with that word. He's good with one. I knew that word. That one syllable. knew a familiar word. I'm all over that. In middle school. Right.

Speaker: Oh, man. Well, that's the list. ah And now I wanted to ah debunk a few a myths about libraries, if we could, while we have a librarian with us.

Speaker: oh um Well, we'll start, though. Erin, you're a librarian, right? Yes. Okay. Well, but that's not really the – Library media specialist.

Speaker: Okay. that That was kind of – what does that mean?

Speaker: You're in charge ah charge of all the media stuff, too, all the iPads, any technology in school. Okay. Okay. Any technology in the school? Whoa, that expanded really quick. You're not an IT. Come on now. but we're the person that they go to to connect to the IT.

Speaker: Okay.

Speaker: Fair enough. um Well, I have a few common library myths here that I want you to comment on, if you would. Okay. Enlighten us. They're pretty... you know I mean, you've heard them all.

Speaker: It's the regular list. ah Libraries are always silent. Nope. You should have been mind today. The kids running around.

Speaker: or Is it in yours? Is it like desired to be silent? Like, is that or is it? Okay. Because, you know know, there's libraries where you can.

Speaker: Chuck loves the ODU one because he just wants sit in there, drink a coffee and pretend like he's a student. Oh, over in the corner. Oh, it is cool.

Speaker: You got to get there early, get spot. My library is about as big as our living room and kitchen combined, maybe. It's not big.

Speaker: was about to say that's pretty small. sounded like you were saying it's that big. And I was like, man. No, it's not big. Okay. Wow. That is, that would be loud. Okay. ah Librarians only read books.

Speaker: No. You watch movies. i can confirm. What else do you? You watch movies. I watch movies. I watch TV. Crochet. Crochet.

Speaker: Whoa. Maybe while listening to a book. here yeah I also listen to books. I don't just read them. I do puzzles. don't just read. By the way, can I take a side note on that?

Speaker: Yeah. does that count as reading a book? I mean, you can ask different people, but yes. Oh, totally. Okay. It feels like a shortcut to me. Can I then say that I read it?

Speaker: No. No, you cannot. I think yes. All right. I like this. I like it. I say that I read it. I mean, I listen to it, but when you're reading like sitting reading a book, you can't do anything else. You have to sit there and just read the book. But when you're listening to it, you can do other things while you're being entertained.

Speaker: So you're multitasking. You're efficient. I also have different genres. Like I will do audio books for anything like a biography, a self-help. I want it audio. If it's fiction, I want to read it on my Kindle or the actual book.

Speaker: Fiction, I can go either either way, but nonfiction, I definitely have to have audio book. It's so much better. um Another myth, everything is available online. So why?

Speaker: Would you even need a library?

Speaker: Everything's available online? No, it's not. Libraries are free. always have to pay for everything online. Nice. There we go. Libraries were made so everybody had the same availability.

Speaker: I think a lot of people probably don't know how many newer titles you can actually go get from the library, too. think sometimes pay people think if you go, it's because you want to pick up your copy of Little Women. but Right. you can actually get recent titles.

Speaker: No dollars. Do you steal a library card? Yeah. yeah And I'll go in a bookstore and I'll take pictures of books that I want to read and then go see if the library has them.

Speaker: Is is a library card free? Yeah. You only pay money if you don't return your books on time. That's a whole other conversation there. What, Charlie? Well, I mean, taxpayer money pays for the libraries.

Speaker: It's not free. Yeah. maybe we can launch Librarians are stern and unapproachable.

Speaker: I got this one.

Speaker: next Oh, sorry, librarian. Go ahead. I mean, if cut kids are running up and hugging me all the time, I don't think I'm unapproachable.

Speaker: Okay. That's a fair answer. The kids love coming to see me. Chuck, do you agree? I'm just looking forward to the time when we do the IT employee ah portion of this episode.

Speaker: Let's poll the room. Are librarians stern and unapproachable? I always loved our librarians in school. I don't even remember my librarian. I would think these days, they're not.

Speaker: I always thought back in the day, they were old, mean women. That's a stereotype. That's like in the movies, I think. Way more than in real life. I can't remember my librarian, which makes me think she was neither nice nor... You can't remember your middle school librarian or your high school? can't remember a librarian. Wait till I tell them.

Speaker: Do they remember me? Your middle school librarian... Don't say the name out loud. Is your aunt's sister?

Speaker: Lee? That didn't help me. Not this aunt. ah He doesn't know his aunt's. Vicky's sister.

Speaker: Oh. um I don't she was librarian. Yes, she was. Oh, wait. ah wait Yes, she was. I don't know. But it doesn't matter. I don't remember any librarians. and I don't know if they were stern or not. But but these days, they're not the old mean women. they are the young, attractive, like, oh, I love a librarian. You're on the wrong website again. ah Yeah.

Speaker: ah You disappeared. That's what happens. His computer died.

Speaker: It died. That's hilarious. Okay. Well, I'll wrap up this little insert ah of an episode. ah Thank you all for joining um and listening.

Speaker: For Shauna Frutwell, Charlie Hart. Oh. Nope. nope Not there. Okay. And our lovely guest, Erin Harkam. Thank you for joining us.
