Introduction and Episode Overview
00:00:06
Speaker
Thanks for tuning in to the Loser Kid Pinball Podcast.
00:00:09
Speaker
We are on episode 55.
00:00:11
Speaker
I am your host, Josh Roop.
00:00:12
Speaker
With me, my co-captain as always... Scott Larson.
00:00:15
Speaker
And we are live tonight.
00:00:17
Speaker
Well, now that you're hearing it's pre-recorded, but... It was recorded live.
00:00:21
Speaker
It was recorded live.
00:00:22
Speaker
Yes, recorded live from Scott's basement.
00:00:24
Speaker
I'm here with Scott.
00:00:25
Speaker
We're hanging out, and we've got some great stuff for you tonight.
00:00:29
Speaker
What do you say, Scott?
00:00:31
Speaker
We actually have... We did unbox my...
00:00:37
Speaker
My Led Zeppelin Premium.
00:00:38
Speaker
It's out in the garage.
00:00:39
Speaker
Still have not gone down the stairs of death because you need more than two people to navigate those suckers.
00:00:46
Speaker
But we did open that, so we'll talk about our review of that and Game Room updates.
Pinball Resources and Community Shoutouts
00:00:52
Speaker
But first, let's talk about people that we want to promote on the podcast.
00:00:57
Speaker
First and foremost, let's talk about flipping out pinball.
00:01:00
Speaker
Zach and Nicole, if you are interested in any of your pinball needs, and they also just started selling raw thrills too.
00:01:08
Speaker
So if you want to pick up that big buck hunter and throw that in the basement and to hunt all those furry creatures out there, go ahead and give them a holler.
00:01:17
Speaker
They've been posting videos on that and that looks really fun.
00:01:20
Speaker
I'd like to pick up one for myself.
00:01:22
Speaker
Check out this week in Pinball.
00:01:23
Speaker
Jeff Patterson does a great job about
Game Room Updates and Challenges
00:01:26
Speaker
weeding through all the information that's going through the media and he just summarized it into some quick steps.
00:01:33
Speaker
Go ahead and check those out.
00:01:35
Speaker
Also, Pinball Supernova, if you want to check them out, it's a great resource.
00:01:38
Speaker
I was navigating their site today and they have videos.
00:01:41
Speaker
They also have infos, mods, toppers, and a little review.
00:01:45
Speaker
So it gives you some sort of resource on working on your pinball machines and discussing things you can do.
00:01:52
Speaker
Also, Pinball Loft, my buddy Tim Purcell's personal blog on his history of pinball, he did some pretty awesome things with his GNR LE where he added some more speakers.
00:02:06
Speaker
And I'm pretty sure the game actually hovers when he plays it because there's so much sound coming out of it now.
00:02:13
Speaker
Also, Rate A Pinball, check out world number one, Raymond Davidson.
00:02:17
Speaker
He's a great streamer and he will teach you all the things you need to do to up your game to be an elite player.
00:02:24
Speaker
You can at least try to be as good as Raymond is.
00:02:27
Speaker
If you want to see that pinball machine better, go ahead and check out pin shades, pin shades or polarized shades that will actually help you play better because you'll be able to see farther because it reduces the glare coming off of the machines.
00:02:41
Speaker
Also check out our buddies, Ron and David Dennis up at the silver ball chronicles.
00:02:47
Speaker
If you want to know more about the history of pinball, they have a,
00:02:50
Speaker
Great little resource.
00:02:50
Speaker
We had David on the show the other day and we've been on Ron and Bruce's show.
00:02:55
Speaker
So check that out.
00:02:57
Speaker
Also, if you have that trance light that's collecting dust down in your basement, go ahead and buy a lit frame for it.
00:03:06
Speaker
Go ahead and throw that sucker up on the wall.
00:03:08
Speaker
And if you don't have the machine and you just want to display that, they have Brad Hunter.
00:03:13
Speaker
has different sizes for different machines.
00:03:16
Speaker
And I just picked up an awesome Translite.
00:03:21
Speaker
I just ordered an Iron Maiden Pro Sign Translite.
00:03:25
Speaker
So I'm going to be throwing that up in my game room.
00:03:28
Speaker
And so that's the rundown of the people we are pushing this week.
00:03:33
Speaker
Josh, welcome to come out to Highland, Utah.
00:03:36
Speaker
How was the drive?
00:03:37
Speaker
It wasn't too shabby.
00:03:38
Speaker
So long as it's dry and sunny, it's always a good drive.
00:03:44
Speaker
Ironically, we are actually recording in my basement, but we tried to record in the same room and we kept getting feedback on the microphone.
00:03:52
Speaker
So if you guys record in the same room and don't have that problem, reach out to us and let us know how we can do that in the future.
00:03:59
Speaker
So Josh is actually in the pinball room and I'm in the office.
00:04:04
Speaker
Yeah, it was funny because we tried and tried and then we're like, this just isn't working.
00:04:09
Speaker
Yeah, it's getting late.
00:04:11
Speaker
We're doing things.
00:04:11
Speaker
I'm going skiing tomorrow.
00:04:13
Speaker
And Josh has his class tomorrow morning.
00:04:15
Speaker
So we have to get it.
00:04:17
Speaker
We have to get in bed.
00:04:20
Speaker
We're not the young, the young, not the young whippersnappers.
00:04:24
Speaker
We are solidly in the in the dad rock crowd, man.
00:04:26
Speaker
Heck yes, you know it.
00:04:28
Speaker
And it's a nice place to be at this point.
00:04:32
Speaker
Okay, so first off, what do you want to talk about first?
00:04:35
Speaker
We talked about possible game room updates, orders.
00:04:38
Speaker
You want to talk about Led Zeppelin?
Led Zeppelin Pinball First Impressions
00:04:40
Speaker
You want to talk about CGC?
00:04:41
Speaker
What do you want to start with?
00:04:42
Speaker
Well, it says Zeppelin's fresh on our minds since we just kind of finished playing that.
00:04:46
Speaker
Let's talk about that because I don't feel like this game has got much of a wrap here.
00:04:52
Speaker
I mean, we've heard that.
00:04:53
Speaker
You mean a wrap or review or what?
00:04:56
Speaker
Yeah, let's say Buzz because we've heard about Zeppelin.
00:05:00
Speaker
We know that Teolas loves it and that was a given, but I just don't feel like there is enough information about this game out there.
00:05:07
Speaker
And granted, I mean, Stern has definitely streamed it and so has Rayday and they've done awesome jobs, but I just haven't heard people talking about this game like Avengers or Turtles or, you know, there's a handful of games that I feel like
00:05:23
Speaker
have kind of stepped in its place.
00:05:25
Speaker
And so it was nice to get my hands on, you got the premium.
00:05:30
Speaker
And it was nice to get my hands on it and give it a try because I'm a firm believer.
00:05:35
Speaker
I don't make a solid opinion about a pinball machine until I get my hands on it.
00:05:39
Speaker
And our friend Jeff Rivera from the Pinball Podcast, I've kind of taken what he has said to heart, that you don't judge a game until you put a high score on it.
00:05:50
Speaker
Okay, well, that was our second game, so.
00:05:52
Speaker
Or the Grand Champions, and I did.
00:05:54
Speaker
Okay, that was your second game, yeah.
00:05:55
Speaker
Yeah, that was my second game.
00:05:56
Speaker
I'm glad they started really low, so you could win Grand Champion and.
00:06:01
Speaker
And here's the thing.
00:06:03
Speaker
This game, I'm really enjoying it.
00:06:05
Speaker
The sound is fantastic on it.
00:06:07
Speaker
I felt like it's an upgrade from previous sound packages.
00:06:11
Speaker
But I think the thing that I just, I was so confused with what everything that was going on and me and you were trying to dissect this while we're playing and the electric magnet kept coming out of the middle of the play field.
00:06:22
Speaker
I'm like, how the heck are we doing this?
00:06:24
Speaker
And so once we kind of slowed down, because the rules card, you read it and it's like, if you want to learn more about these rules, you can go online to, I guess, the web address.
00:06:32
Speaker
And I'm like, but that doesn't help me right now.
00:06:39
Speaker
How many times have you gone up to the machine and actually looked at the little card on the left-hand side of the apron?
00:06:47
Speaker
How many times have you actually read that?
00:06:49
Speaker
I usually read it after I get a feel for the shots, just because I want to know where I'm shooting, and I don't want to be putting the cart before the horse, so to speak.
00:07:00
Speaker
So I get a feel for the shots, then I usually read the card to get an idea of what the heck is even supposed to be going on.
00:07:07
Speaker
So I have like 11 games in my house, one in my garage now, so 12.
00:07:11
Speaker
Do you know how many of those cards I've actually read?
00:07:17
Speaker
And I immediately forget what they say.
00:07:21
Speaker
That's just not how I learned games.
00:07:25
Speaker
I wish I were better.
00:07:26
Speaker
And this is my big failing as a as a pinball player.
00:07:30
Speaker
I can typically keep the ball playing long.
00:07:35
Speaker
You know, I can have a long ball and then I look up and realize I didn't score many points.
00:07:43
Speaker
It kind of reminds me a little bit of, you know, the special Winlit documentary when Josh Sharp is talking about his dad.
00:07:49
Speaker
He's like his, you know, Roger.
00:07:52
Speaker
He's like, he'll keep nailing that one shot over and over again, even though it's worth no points.
00:07:57
Speaker
He's like, dad, why are you hitting that?
00:07:58
Speaker
He's like, because it feels good.
00:08:00
Speaker
That's a great shot.
00:08:01
Speaker
I kind of feel that way, that I need to learn more about the games.
00:08:07
Speaker
The game that I sold, which I'm fine with selling it, I still miss it a little bit, was Iron Man.
00:08:12
Speaker
But it was because I played it enough that I really knew the rules.
00:08:16
Speaker
And that wasn't really a super deep rule set.
00:08:19
Speaker
So I think that you have to, with the modern complex rule sets,
00:08:24
Speaker
I think you have to go online to learn the rules.
00:08:28
Speaker
And also we put it up and we shared it out and Raymond actually texted back.
00:08:37
Speaker
He's like, make sure you update.
00:08:38
Speaker
So we played 0.93.
00:08:41
Speaker
We didn't play 0.95.
00:08:41
Speaker
And so that's the current one.
00:08:44
Speaker
So we haven't done that yet because there are other things that have been released in 0.95.
Player Types and Design Philosophy
00:08:50
Speaker
Well, and I know that we've talked about this.
00:08:52
Speaker
We've talked about this with other people recently.
00:08:54
Speaker
I think that there's two different types of pinball players in the world.
00:08:57
Speaker
There are the ones that solely are for the gameplay, for the score, very competition driven.
00:09:06
Speaker
And then the other person is for the experience, the immersion into the pinball machine, that world under glass that we hear about.
00:09:13
Speaker
And they can intersect and cross, but I feel like that's the two distinct players.
00:09:19
Speaker
And Stern is very well grasped on the competition, the flow, the shots, the score, where JJP is the immersion of the game.
00:09:31
Speaker
I mean, GNR is a fantastic example of this.
00:09:35
Speaker
It's just you're inside the Guns N' Roses concert when you're playing it.
00:09:40
Speaker
Okay, but is that really fair to compare things to Guns N' Roses?
00:09:44
Speaker
Because a member of the band was part of the design team.
00:09:49
Speaker
I don't think you're going to get Robert Plant coming down and saying, hey, Steve, let's hang out and design a pinball machine.
00:09:57
Speaker
Like it's, it's kind of a different, I I'm, I'm not downplaying what guns and roses was able to do because asset wise, I doubt you will get any other game that has the wealth of assets that guns and roses has involved.
00:10:12
Speaker
But I also think that is such an outlier into what you can expect from a machine.
00:10:18
Speaker
Okay, let's take this then.
00:10:20
Speaker
Let's take 2012-2013 area.
00:10:21
Speaker
We're going to go ACDC versus Wizard of Oz.
00:10:27
Speaker
I know there are two entirely different ones, Dad Rock, the other ones, Classic Cinema, but there is definitely an experience with Wizard of Oz versus, it's not the best flowing game, it's not the best shooting game, but you definitely have an experience there versus ACDC, which is
00:10:44
Speaker
Yes, you get the music and stuff like that, but you're definitely focusing on the gameplay and the shots and the flow because it's a Ritchie game.
00:10:51
Speaker
Is that a fair assessment?
00:10:53
Speaker
Yeah, I think that's fair.
00:10:55
Speaker
And now Wizard of Oz is certainly a groundbreaking game.
00:10:59
Speaker
I mean, that tilted the landscape of pinball.
00:11:06
Speaker
there, they are almost seems there should be an inflection point that there's, there's really
Historic Pinball Innovations
00:11:11
Speaker
two inflection points in pinball in the last 25 years.
00:11:16
Speaker
There's one inflection point is when Williams ballet said, we're making more, more money on slot machines.
00:11:23
Speaker
So we're just going to shut down the pinball.
00:11:26
Speaker
So that was one inflection point.
00:11:27
Speaker
And then it was kind of a slow drain on pinball.
00:11:32
Speaker
But then when J.J.P.
00:11:36
Speaker
put out Wizard of Oz, it was an inflection point where people said, no, we can still do this better.
00:11:45
Speaker
And it propelled people forward.
00:11:49
Speaker
Yeah, I guess you could still put ACDC because ACDC was really the first stern.
00:11:56
Speaker
That was their back in black.
00:11:58
Speaker
It was the, hey, we are we're going to do things better than Wheel of Fortune and Big Buck Hunter.
00:12:05
Speaker
So to bring it back to Zeppelin, I think that Zeppelin is starting to move across that line of not only is it competition and smooth shots and great flow, but you're starting to get that immersion like you do with a JJP.
00:12:21
Speaker
I don't know if it's the light bars that are on both sides, like the hot rails that you find in a JJP.
00:12:26
Speaker
The sound quality, I don't know if it's just because we had it on standard sound and it was cranking and it sounded good.
00:12:32
Speaker
The music was good.
00:12:34
Speaker
I actually really enjoyed the sound effects when you're hitting stuff.
00:12:38
Speaker
I felt like I was being more immersed with Zeppelin, even versus Avengers.
00:12:44
Speaker
I feel like you're in the Zeppelin world.
00:12:47
Speaker
Avengers you are, but some of the calls kind of take you out of it.
00:12:51
Speaker
And we're not going to get into that at the moment.
00:12:53
Speaker
But I think my greatest takeaway from Zeppelin from playing, what do we play?
00:12:59
Speaker
And it was getting late and we didn't want to record tonight.
00:13:02
Speaker
So it was that was the reason, Raymond, why we didn't update.
00:13:06
Speaker
But we will update.
00:13:07
Speaker
OK, then we'll be able to tell you what's going on.
00:13:10
Speaker
I think my greatest takeaway from it is once you get in a groove and you start hitting the shots, this game flows really, really well.
00:13:17
Speaker
I think if you learn the rules and you start learning those, it's even more enjoyable because I was starting to get the grasp of everything that was working.
00:13:26
Speaker
And it was just really fun playing that game.
00:13:29
Speaker
And I felt like it promotes you to play better and rewards you for doing so.
00:13:35
Speaker
My only negativity, and you know exactly what I'm going to say because we made fun of this all night while we're playing this game.
00:13:41
Speaker
Good day, Governor.
00:13:43
Speaker
What's up with the British dude?
00:13:45
Speaker
Is he even British?
00:13:46
Speaker
I don't know if he's British.
00:13:47
Speaker
It really sounds like a Simpsons character that is trying to be British but may or may not be British.
00:13:55
Speaker
It's a little distracting.
00:13:58
Speaker
I guess I'll put it that way.
00:14:00
Speaker
I kept laughing every time it happened.
00:14:01
Speaker
I'm like, why didn't they just call it Mark Silk?
00:14:03
Speaker
He is our, what would you call him?
00:14:07
Speaker
Our token British guy?
00:14:08
Speaker
Okay, I would say an excellent voice actor who also happens to be British.
00:14:18
Speaker
Cause mine could be taken offensive.
00:14:21
Speaker
I know what you're saying.
00:14:22
Speaker
And Mark's actually a good friend.
00:14:24
Speaker
We, you know, we, we talk at least once a month and he is hilarious by the way.
00:14:29
Speaker
When you talk to Mark on the phone, you realize how funny you are not because he is born to entertain, but yeah, like he would have been, I think a better choice.
00:14:43
Speaker
We everything we're saying is with the caveat that we are dealing in a world where we can pick and choose what we want to do.
00:14:51
Speaker
Yes, there may be licensing constraints.
00:14:53
Speaker
We know we know that on Avengers Marvel use their voice actors for, you know, so so that that was really out of Stern's hand.
00:15:01
Speaker
So this may be one of the situations, but I'm really hoping that does upgrade a little bit because it is it does take you out of that experience.
00:15:11
Speaker
It just, it seemed almost stereotypical what he was saying.
00:15:16
Speaker
And that's just the vibe I was getting.
00:15:18
Speaker
And granted, he may be British.
00:15:19
Speaker
I don't know the voice actor.
00:15:20
Speaker
Maybe we should dig into this a little more.
00:15:23
Speaker
Maybe he's a wonderful guy.
00:15:24
Speaker
He's from London, you junk.
00:15:27
Speaker
But I just felt like it was over-exaggerated.
00:15:30
Speaker
Almost like we were talking with... No, okay, wait, wait, wait.
00:15:34
Speaker
I'm going to say this and you're going to know it.
00:15:37
Speaker
It felt like Dick Van Dyke from Mary Poppins.
00:15:39
Speaker
Yes, it's exactly what it was.
00:15:43
Speaker
You've hit the nail on the head.
00:15:46
Speaker
Good day, Governor.
00:15:51
Speaker
Now, that being said, now, we have talked about this before, though.
00:15:54
Speaker
One of the reasons why music pins are such great at immersion or that experience is...
00:16:02
Speaker
Because music is actually a, it's, it's a visceral reaction.
00:16:08
Speaker
And with the updated sound, they can put things in it that they couldn't put in before.
00:16:15
Speaker
Like the, the bells and whistles that they used to do, you know, in, you know,
00:16:20
Speaker
In pinball, you know, the stereotypical pinball sounds, it's the ding, ding, ding, you know, those type of sounds.
00:16:28
Speaker
But now you basically have your own stereo system so you can play whatever you want.
00:16:32
Speaker
Now, this is why and we talked about before, this is why TNA is such an immersive game because of the sound.
00:16:43
Speaker
And if TNA had the bells and whistles, the stereotypical sounds from 1982, it would not be the same game.
00:16:54
Speaker
And that's the same thing with, we talk about Guns N' Roses being that immersive experience.
00:16:59
Speaker
So it wouldn't be the same thing without the Guns N' Roses music.
00:17:03
Speaker
Now, I would say Led Zeppelin is certainly on par with Guns N' Roses music for songs you want to jam with to play.
00:17:15
Speaker
So they had that going for it.
00:17:18
Speaker
So why don't we step back and say, okay, so let's talk about what do you, okay, we only have the premium that we've seen in person.
00:17:27
Speaker
We've seen all the other art packages.
00:17:29
Speaker
Now that you've seen it, what do you think?
00:17:32
Speaker
I really like the premium.
00:17:34
Speaker
I am a fan of the LE.
00:17:35
Speaker
Don't get me wrong.
00:17:38
Speaker
I knew Zeppelin from hearing him on the radio.
00:17:40
Speaker
I do not have the deeper connection with Zeppelin like other people do.
00:17:44
Speaker
I do recognize Icarus as an actual symbol of Zeppelin.
00:17:49
Speaker
And the reason being is by time I started growing up, when I started walking through the Macy's and the JC Penney's and the mall and stuff like that, and they're selling the ACDC and they're selling.
Art Design Appreciation and Comparisons
00:18:03
Speaker
It's the hot topic shirts.
00:18:04
Speaker
You want to let the shirt.
00:18:06
Speaker
icarus was always on those shirts and so when people were complaining that icarus isn't zeppelin i was i was kind of taken back just because it is yeah i i feel like it is very recognizable with their brand at this point in time yeah so i still enjoy i like blue i really like blue i feel like the blue pops with the yellow and the orange on on the le but as far as the premium goes love the artwork on there
00:18:32
Speaker
Yeah, I people will say it feels a little bit
00:18:39
Speaker
Phoned in, I guess is the, it's, it seems an easy way of doing things because the pro and the premium, they're just using the, the straight album art, right?
00:18:50
Speaker
It's a little different than what they did with iron maiden.
00:18:52
Speaker
I mean, they iron maiden could have easily put like power slave.
00:18:57
Speaker
I mean, that's basically what the premium iron maiden is.
00:19:00
Speaker
It's the power slave album or the theme, but they still did original artwork for it.
00:19:05
Speaker
And they could have done different things, but they just threw the album cover on and I'm fine with it.
00:19:12
Speaker
Like I remember like actually having that album, like back when you had the albums and you could see the artwork and it makes that connection.
00:19:22
Speaker
So anybody who is certainly of my age group in the dad rock era, they're going to see that and say, oh, yeah, that's Led Zeppelin.
00:19:30
Speaker
I'm not sure if you did like a stylized cartoon version of it, that it would be Led Zeppelin.
00:19:37
Speaker
Like, I don't think it would be that it's Iron Maiden is a little different.
00:19:41
Speaker
And I know I'm using them interchangeably and I know they're they're slightly different eras.
00:19:45
Speaker
But the art of Iron Maiden was very iconic.
00:19:49
Speaker
And anybody who followed Iron Maiden knew who Eddie was.
00:19:53
Speaker
They knew what you were getting.
00:19:55
Speaker
But they were able to, you know, I think that Zombie Eddie did such an amazing job of modernizing it while keeping true to form.
00:20:05
Speaker
Led Zeppelin doesn't have that same thing.
00:20:07
Speaker
They just had the albums.
00:20:10
Speaker
And anybody who has that album is going to recognize that.
00:20:14
Speaker
So let's break it down to this, though.
00:20:17
Speaker
We had Brad Albright on our show.
00:20:21
Speaker
Yeah, and I have that.
00:20:22
Speaker
He sent me a print.
00:20:23
Speaker
His print is awesome.
00:20:24
Speaker
That cartoon print.
00:20:27
Speaker
Would you take that over your premium artwork that you have?
00:20:33
Speaker
Or is the problem that it's two entirely different styles so you can't really compare?
00:20:37
Speaker
It's two different art packages.
00:20:39
Speaker
The one โ because you can't take Brad's and put it on the premium machine because the play field is different, right?
00:20:54
Speaker
The play field is โ
00:20:59
Speaker
It looks very similar to what maybe a concert program would be back in the 70s.
00:21:06
Speaker
The one that they, that Rota Dave made down in New Zealand, which Brad did the art for, it's very much a...
00:21:17
Speaker
kind of like a cartoony thing.
00:21:18
Speaker
And I'm not, I'm not being dismissive of that.
00:21:22
Speaker
But it's very stylized in that era, a line drawn.
00:21:26
Speaker
It's it's, it looks great.
00:21:28
Speaker
Um, but it kind of looks like, um,
00:21:33
Speaker
a, when I use the word caricature, that usually means kind of like a, uh, you're accentuating things to make it look, you know, humorous, but that's not what he did.
00:21:43
Speaker
He did a great, uh, like cartoony version of Led Zeppelin.
00:21:46
Speaker
And I think that package worked really well together.
00:21:53
Speaker
I like both packages, but I think that I would I prefer the the package I have on the premium because it it feels like that classic concert program that you would buy.
00:22:12
Speaker
So this is my pushback on the artwork.
00:22:16
Speaker
I actually enjoy the cabinets.
00:22:18
Speaker
It's the play field I really don't like.
00:22:20
Speaker
It is good-looking artwork.
00:22:22
Speaker
And I think this is the problem.
00:22:23
Speaker
We've been spoiled when it comes to music pins.
00:22:28
Speaker
I mean, like you said, Dirty Donnie did Aerosmith.
00:22:31
Speaker
We also have Franchie who did Beatles.
00:22:34
Speaker
We've got Zombie Yeti with Iron Maiden.
00:22:38
Speaker
And so I think the problem is, too, is we've come to expect a certain level of artistic-ness to these dad rock games.
00:22:52
Speaker
I feel like it still missed the mark to a point.
00:22:54
Speaker
It's still a good-looking game.
00:22:55
Speaker
I think if you're a Zeppelin fan, even if you're not a Zeppelin fan, I think you're going to enjoy this game.
00:23:01
Speaker
Really, if you haven't played a Zeppelin, get out.
00:23:04
Speaker
Go put your hands on one.
00:23:05
Speaker
They've been out for three months now.
00:23:09
Speaker
It's a very Richie game.
00:23:11
Speaker
You know what you're getting.
00:23:11
Speaker
You're getting flow.
00:23:14
Speaker
I feel like Scott has to adjust a couple things on his game.
00:23:18
Speaker
But, you know, Richie's been talking about that stuff.
00:23:20
Speaker
So it's just one of those things.
00:23:25
Speaker
I think you need a formulated opinion of it.
00:23:28
Speaker
I think it's a good game.
00:23:29
Speaker
Is it for me, my collection?
00:23:30
Speaker
I've already bought three games in the last six months, I swear.
00:23:33
Speaker
So I'm probably tapped out and Zeppelin's not coming into my collection.
00:23:37
Speaker
But I'm glad Scott got it because it's a really good game.
00:23:40
Speaker
Yeah, I would put the art package as good.
00:23:47
Speaker
And that's not to be dismissive of it.
00:23:51
Speaker
I actually thought the Star Wars art package was good too.
00:23:54
Speaker
The one that people say looked like sticker art.
00:23:57
Speaker
And I totally get it.
00:23:58
Speaker
It looks like stock art, which is kind of what Lucasfilm, they're the ones who controlled that, right?
00:24:05
Speaker
And so this feels like it is certainly within the realm of what Led Zeppelin would put out.
00:24:13
Speaker
Do I think it is that next level of the other ones you talked about?
00:24:19
Speaker
But I think it's certainly theme appropriate.
00:24:23
Speaker
And yeah, we can leave it at that.
00:24:26
Speaker
So, so what, what about other things though?
00:24:27
Speaker
I mean, you kind of, you kind of fast forwarded through all the other stuff.
00:24:31
Speaker
What are your thoughts about like the, uh, the shots?
00:24:35
Speaker
How do you like the shots?
00:24:37
Speaker
It's hard to tell because with your garage, you had like lighting directly above us.
00:24:42
Speaker
or not directly above us.
00:24:43
Speaker
So I had a hard time seeing the upper right hand of the play field.
00:24:48
Speaker
And it's crucial to hit that right ramp because to start like tour multiball, you've got to hit the right ramp, then the left scoop.
00:24:55
Speaker
And then you pick an objective to go for.
00:24:58
Speaker
And granted, like Scott said, we're talking about 0.93.
00:25:01
Speaker
It's obviously there's been a code upgrade since.
00:25:03
Speaker
And we've only played five games on it.
Led Zeppelin Gameplay Reflections
00:25:07
Speaker
So, but I thought once you got going, it felt really good.
00:25:10
Speaker
When you got dialed in, you, you could blow it up.
00:25:13
Speaker
I mean, Josh and I were kind of neck and neck on the last game.
00:25:17
Speaker
And then on his third ball, he doubled my score.
00:25:21
Speaker
Well, what I thought was interesting, too, is so the tour multiball, when you go to start that, it gives you like five different objectives you can pick from.
00:25:32
Speaker
One's the spinner, one's ramps, one's orbits, pops.
00:25:37
Speaker
And so we were gravitating towards ramps.
00:25:41
Speaker
But the first couple times we picked it, it did six ramps.
00:25:45
Speaker
And we were kind of killing it on the ramps because you can backhand.
00:25:48
Speaker
It's almost Star Trek-ish where the left side is very easily backhanded from the left flipper.
00:25:54
Speaker
And so we were just backhanding that ramp just over and over and over and getting those six ramps just knocked out, right?
00:26:00
Speaker
We weren't even... When I think backhanding it, I think of like...
00:26:05
Speaker
hitting it, like trapping up and then like shooting it.
00:26:07
Speaker
So it doesn't cross the midline.
00:26:09
Speaker
And we were hitting that in flow.
00:26:11
Speaker
Like it was, it was coming back and we were just slamming it.
00:26:13
Speaker
And so, yeah, it was a, it was a very repeatable shot.
00:26:17
Speaker
The interesting part, though, is as we progressed in more games, I noticed that the requirement for ramps went up across games.
00:26:24
Speaker
I noticed it went from six ramps to nine ramps.
00:26:26
Speaker
And I was like, wait a minute, why did it do that?
00:26:29
Speaker
And so maybe it was trying to help.
00:26:31
Speaker
It realized we were making really good ramp shots.
00:26:33
Speaker
And so it was like, well, maybe we need to make this requirement a little bit harder.
00:26:35
Speaker
It's an adaptive rule set now?
00:26:39
Speaker
How else do you explain it?
00:26:41
Speaker
I think it was the second time you were trying to do it.
00:26:44
Speaker
Yeah, because I think you already had Tor Multiball.
00:26:48
Speaker
That's a good possibility.
00:26:49
Speaker
Like I said, it's a really good flowing game.
00:26:51
Speaker
Yeah, I think so, too.
00:26:53
Speaker
It's a Richie game, right?
00:26:54
Speaker
So you are going to get shots and you are going to feel pin godlike if you get in that zone.
00:27:02
Speaker
There was one game where I was really just hitting everything.
00:27:06
Speaker
Wasn't really scoring a lot of points, but I was hitting a lot of shots and you felt like you were really dialed in.
00:27:14
Speaker
Do you know what it felt like?
00:27:16
Speaker
This is my initial impression and it's probably, okay, all machines have similar themes, right?
00:27:23
Speaker
Like, you know, you could, you know, someone always, every time a new play field comes out, they always pull up like some generic play field.
00:27:31
Speaker
Like, look, it's just big buck hunter reversed and we're going to put it over it, you know?
00:27:36
Speaker
Because how many different ways are you going to make two shots from flippers down to the bottom, right?
00:27:42
Speaker
um it felt like a different version of iron man yeah i guess you could say that um the the difference being is that the iron monger was uh it was a spinner that came up from the play field and it was definitely you weren't punished for hitting the shot perfectly
00:28:05
Speaker
If you hit the ball perfectly, it went straight through.
00:28:09
Speaker
And it felt now again, this is only five games into it.
00:28:13
Speaker
It felt a little spinner heavy like that.
00:28:17
Speaker
Once that spinner came up, that was kind of the only thing you were going for.
00:28:21
Speaker
And so I'm sure when we know more about the rules and the nuances.
00:28:25
Speaker
then it will be different.
00:28:28
Speaker
But it felt kind of like a newer version of Iron Man, like a kind of a Borg-Richie-Lovechild thing where it was like a mashup.
00:28:37
Speaker
And I don't say that dismissively.
00:28:40
Speaker
It's taking good elements.
00:28:44
Speaker
In my game room, I had Spider-Man and Iron Man side by side, and it almost felt like they fused together.
00:28:52
Speaker
Yeah, I could see that.
00:28:53
Speaker
The one thing I did really like about the game too is when you hit that, if you were going turtles standard, that center ramp.
00:29:05
Speaker
When you're hitting that side ramp from that flipper, you actually hit that shot.
00:29:09
Speaker
That game goes, it's like congratulates you for hitting it.
00:29:13
Speaker
It was kind of cool because I could barely, I hit it a handful of times.
00:29:17
Speaker
I don't know if, like I said, it was lightning.
00:29:22
Speaker
I was, I was liking it to turtles, but yeah.
00:29:25
Speaker
Um, but the difference with Zeppelin though, is that it doesn't come.
00:29:29
Speaker
Um, it's a little bit like what Keith did with, uh, with Avengers where the ball doesn't come screaming around an orbit and you're trying to hit that as it's accelerating toward you.
00:29:43
Speaker
It's because if you hit that right orbit, it actually goes to a mini scoop.
00:29:47
Speaker
And so it stops and then comes down.
00:29:50
Speaker
So it seems like something that could be a little easier to hit.
00:29:55
Speaker
When you get it dialed in.
00:29:59
Speaker
So that's my thoughts.
00:30:00
Speaker
Anything else you want to hit on Zeppelin?
00:30:03
Speaker
So things that I thought were incrementally better.
00:30:06
Speaker
I like that the premium already had the art blades in.
00:30:10
Speaker
I like that they integrated a light show, which is going to be very similar to what Guns N' Roses did with their light show in the game.
00:30:22
Speaker
It is taking it to a new level.
00:30:28
Speaker
I know it will be a fun game, and I'm glad we have it.
00:30:32
Speaker
It'll be fun to upgrade it and then learn the rules and see what a deeper dive will be.
00:30:38
Speaker
But so far, I'd say initial vibe, I'd say is positive.
00:30:44
Speaker
So I wasn't excited, but I wasn't discouraged going into this gameplay.
00:30:49
Speaker
I was surprisingly happy with it.
00:30:51
Speaker
It made it because I had zero expectations of it.
00:30:54
Speaker
You know, like I said, I'm not a huge... I don't worship the ground that Zeppelin walks on, so... Not like Aquabats.
00:31:00
Speaker
Yeah, you know it, so... Yeah.
00:31:04
Speaker
I've decided now I would like an Aquabats game, but I'm really digging.
00:31:08
Speaker
I think that Scott Pilgrim versus the world would make a fantastic pinball machine because I think you could play really well into the... You could do the fighting thing, yeah.
00:31:16
Speaker
Well, Seven Evil Xs.
00:31:18
Speaker
We've seen the fighting thing with Avengers and Deadpool.
00:31:21
Speaker
But I know it's a totally random tangent, but seriously, Scott Pilgrim versus the world.
00:31:25
Speaker
Okay, I still haven't seen it.
00:31:28
Speaker
You should read the books first.
00:31:33
Speaker
But the problem is, is they try to jam six books into one movie.
00:31:39
Speaker
I'll, I'll pull it up.
00:31:43
Speaker
So I, I would say thumbs up.
00:31:44
Speaker
I'd say certainly give it a shot.
00:31:46
Speaker
I'm not sure how the last ability, um, cause that is something in a game room.
00:31:51
Speaker
Um, and so let's move on to a game room updates and talk about that.
00:31:55
Speaker
So, um, Josh, what do you have coming in?
00:31:59
Speaker
What do you have going out?
00:32:01
Speaker
I honestly don't have any plans right now.
00:32:04
Speaker
I offered someone a trade for my dress park pro, uh, not really bites at the moment.
00:32:11
Speaker
I've been talking to someone about a shadow.
00:32:12
Speaker
I really would love a shadow.
00:32:14
Speaker
I know that when we were on slam tilt, I talked about that's like one of the games I've wanted in my collection.
00:32:20
Speaker
i just i'm having a really rough time with prices right now i think everyone else is feeling it use markets through the roof you know new machine it's crazy to me because it's like well do i spend the money on a shadow or do i wait to see what stern comes out with because a pro yeah you're kind of the same right yeah yeah i mean a shadow is four grand but still i mean a pro brand new out of the box
00:32:45
Speaker
I dropped another thousand or two.
00:32:47
Speaker
Well, it's, it's going to be 2000.
00:32:48
Speaker
Not just if you, if you can get me a stern pro for $5,000, hook me up.
00:32:53
Speaker
Yeah, no, no, I absolutely, you know, but even like a stern pro for $6,000, you have to legitimately look at and say, okay, is a 25 year old game that has very basic code.
00:33:05
Speaker
Cause they all had basic code.
00:33:09
Speaker
Like you, you know, do you want to do that?
00:33:12
Speaker
And, you know, and,
00:33:14
Speaker
Remember when Munsters came out, people didn't like that they had that retro code on it, which I actually, I think Munsters is a fun game, but you know, I, I'm not, I, I'm not a, I'm not a tournament player.
00:33:29
Speaker
Well, and I'm, I'm still having a hard time wrapping my mind around creature from the black lagoon being a $6,000 game.
00:33:36
Speaker
This is a game when I got into the hobby was in the mid twos to, to low threes.
00:33:42
Speaker
Yeah, I don't know.
00:33:43
Speaker
I think, well, there's certainly the nostalgia component to that.
00:33:49
Speaker
And so, well, I guess we'll talk about that a little bit later when we're going to talk about CGC.
00:33:56
Speaker
So game room updates for me.
00:33:59
Speaker
I actually decided to bite the bullet on two games coming out.
00:34:05
Speaker
Which ones are you getting?
00:34:06
Speaker
So I decided to get a Deadpool premium.
00:34:11
Speaker
So I I've talked to a lot of people and ironically when Deadpool came out, um, it, it actually didn't have the buzz.
00:34:19
Speaker
Like it came out and they're like, yeah, okay.
00:34:21
Speaker
It's kind of clunky.
00:34:22
Speaker
Like people don't like it, but it's steadily marched up and to where, um,
00:34:28
Speaker
Into where it's people's it's one of people's favorite games like my friend Tony I texted him and he's he has like 30 games in a pinball barn that he has on his on his property.
00:34:42
Speaker
And he said he's going to be buried with with Deadpool like that's how much he loves it.
00:34:48
Speaker
And so after he said, I'm like, you know, I need to give this game more more time in because I I am a sucker for drop targets.
00:34:56
Speaker
So I decided to get the premium.
00:34:57
Speaker
So I ordered that.
00:34:59
Speaker
I also heard that they were they were going to put a few more Iron Maidens on
Game Room Acquisitions and Sales
00:35:05
Speaker
So I put my name on a list for getting Iron Maiden.
00:35:10
Speaker
And yeah, so Iron Maiden went for the premium.
00:35:15
Speaker
That's the era that's iconic for me in Iron Maiden is that live after death slash power slave era.
00:35:26
Speaker
So I'm looking forward to that.
00:35:30
Speaker
And so I think I'm going to have to start moving things.
00:35:32
Speaker
I think that Spider-Man is going to have to move on.
00:35:37
Speaker
I've enjoyed Turtles.
00:35:38
Speaker
I think it's great.
00:35:38
Speaker
But I think I, you know, if I'm turning over my new games faster, I think I'll, I may have to have Turtles move on too.
00:35:47
Speaker
I'm a firm believer if you're going to buy a Turtles, anyone that's listening right now, if you're going to buy a Turtles, get the Pro.
00:35:54
Speaker
I think you'll be happier with the Pro.
00:35:55
Speaker
If you've been looking at a Turtles and you're enjoying it, I think that's the problem that you've had with Turtles because I know that you haven't been super pleased with Turtles.
00:36:03
Speaker
It's just hard, I guess.
00:36:09
Speaker
I feel that my personal limitations are what's holding that game back.
00:36:13
Speaker
I don't really think it's the game.
00:36:15
Speaker
Well, I own the Pro.
00:36:16
Speaker
I've played your premium.
00:36:18
Speaker
The top half of that game is hard to see.
00:36:22
Speaker
It's kind of packed, yeah.
00:36:24
Speaker
from the side ramp up.
00:36:26
Speaker
And the problem is, is the most critical shots are in that top spot and they are blocked.
00:36:32
Speaker
And so that's, I played it again tonight while you were upstairs and getting, and getting ready for us to get recording.
00:36:40
Speaker
And I enjoyed it still, but I was having a rough time hitting some shots just because you can't see anything on that.
00:36:48
Speaker
Visually, it may be a little more challenging, but I think if you had it, you would just kind of know, like I, if I play a game enough, I know where the shots are and I just, you know, it's,
00:37:01
Speaker
I think that it's you just have to learn how to turn.
00:37:04
Speaker
This is one of my issues about trying to move on.
00:37:08
Speaker
I just I'm just trying to learn to let go and sell games that my first game that I sold that I thought was going to be bolted to the ground was was Iron Man.
00:37:17
Speaker
And I felt that I sold it because I needed to move on.
00:37:20
Speaker
I needed to play other games.
00:37:22
Speaker
And that's kind of the only game I was playing.
00:37:24
Speaker
Well, and COVID's kind of helped that too.
00:37:28
Speaker
And so those are, I also, I still have a few things to install.
00:37:34
Speaker
Oh, I got my new, my Subway for Avengers.
00:37:39
Speaker
So my Subway holds up.
00:37:40
Speaker
It's a limited edition.
00:37:41
Speaker
So the balls get kind of stuck in there.
00:37:46
Speaker
So Stern sent me a new one.
00:37:49
Speaker
And I will be installing that too.
00:37:51
Speaker
So that will be a lot more fun.
00:37:54
Speaker
And yeah, that's, so that's my game room updates.
00:38:00
Speaker
I'm just waiting to see what comes out at the end of the month slash beginning of April.
00:38:04
Speaker
And then we'll talk about that later, but I keep getting this itch.
00:38:08
Speaker
I need another pinball machine because we all get that.
00:38:11
Speaker
And I'm like, just, just hold off.
00:38:15
Speaker
Everyone knows what March means.
00:38:16
Speaker
So let's just, let's just see what's in store for March and the beginning of April.
00:38:20
Speaker
So we'll see what happens there.
00:38:24
Speaker
So do you want to talk about releases next or do you want to talk about the speculations?
00:38:28
Speaker
Let's, let's talk about really quick.
00:38:30
Speaker
Uh, let's talk about us ourselves.
00:38:32
Speaker
I, I want, I, I showed up to your house with a newspaper.
00:38:37
Speaker
Uh, Josh is, is infamous, which is more than famous.
00:38:41
Speaker
Um, what, what happened, Josh?
00:38:43
Speaker
So the local newspaper in my town reached out.
00:38:46
Speaker
They've been around for decades, and they wanted to do a human interest piece is what they called it.
00:38:51
Speaker
They'd heard that we'd won the Pinball Industry Awards.
00:38:55
Speaker
We were recipients there.
00:39:02
Speaker
And so they asked me to sit down and give him an interview.
00:39:06
Speaker
And I found it funny because you read the article and it's a great, it's a good article.
00:39:11
Speaker
But I'm like, I sat down for like an hour and a half with this lady and I felt like they didn't use much.
00:39:16
Speaker
And like you said, they only sent you three questions or something like that.
00:39:21
Speaker
And then I felt bad for like Dennis Creasel because they didn't even reach out to him.
00:39:27
Speaker
But it was just funny because like a lot of our friends and colleagues in the hobby was able to give their, their take on it.
00:39:36
Speaker
And it was an honor.
00:39:39
Speaker
And it's funny because we've been doing this for how long now?
00:39:42
Speaker
Well, over two years.
00:39:46
Speaker
I haven't heard much in my town about doing the podcast, which I don't do this for recognition in my town.
00:39:52
Speaker
I do it because I really enjoy pinball.
00:39:55
Speaker
And like I said from episode one, I want to be part of the conversation.
00:39:58
Speaker
I want to give my take on it and give a positive spin in the industry because that's what I felt like we've needed.
00:40:04
Speaker
But it's funny because as soon as the article piece came out in the newspaper, more and more people have been like, aren't you the guy from the newspaper?
00:40:14
Speaker
And I'm like, people are like, this is terrible of me, but like, I thought everything was online nowadays, but apparently a lot of people still receive or read the newspaper in my town.
00:40:25
Speaker
And so I've had, had a lot of people say, you made the front page of the newspaper.
00:40:31
Speaker
Front page in Vernal.
00:40:32
Speaker
So we are, we're trending, we're trending.
00:40:35
Speaker
So in, in, in dinosaur land.
00:40:38
Speaker
So that's a tri-county area.
00:40:40
Speaker
We've got 80,000 people down there, man.
00:40:42
Speaker
We've got a lot of people.
00:40:43
Speaker
No, I, yeah, in all sincerity, it is actually really cool.
00:40:46
Speaker
And I'm, I'm glad that we got it right up.
00:40:50
Speaker
And that, that, that's cool, right?
00:40:52
Speaker
Yeah, definitely an honor.
00:40:53
Speaker
It's, what else can you say about it?
00:40:55
Speaker
You know, it's, it's pretty cool that other people are starting
Community Recognition and Newspaper Feature
00:40:59
Speaker
to take notice of the pinball, pinball industry.
00:41:02
Speaker
And we're just happened to be a part, a stitch in the tapestry that is this hobby.
00:41:06
Speaker
And it's cool that it's not just a story associated with the song Pinball Wizard, which is usually what happens.
00:41:13
Speaker
And that's what's funny.
00:41:14
Speaker
It made me chuckle.
00:41:15
Speaker
There was a couple of things like Roger Sharp and his sons.
00:41:18
Speaker
Like there was no mention of Zach and Josh.
00:41:23
Speaker
It's kind of like Gilligan's Island where it's like they name five of them and then they leave out the professor and Marianne.
00:41:29
Speaker
They're like, and the rest.
00:41:31
Speaker
Like there's two people.
00:41:32
Speaker
You couldn't just name both of them.
00:41:36
Speaker
I was honored to be a part of that.
00:41:39
Speaker
That was a lot of fun.
00:41:40
Speaker
And the other thing that I'm even more honored about, we got a message today from Rick Nagel.
00:41:46
Speaker
And he said, hey, your guys' logo is now in Avengers.
00:41:51
Speaker
So if you do the LKP like you do with Turtles, the 11, sorry, no, not 11.
00:41:57
Speaker
It's 12 left, one right, 11 left, one right, 16 left, two right.
00:42:03
Speaker
okay wait what's that okay so but okay first you have to clear it because you have to hold both flippers both flippers yes you do 12 left one right 11 left one right 16 left one right and then one right to do it one more time it'll pop up our logo yeah and then i also got another message uh from eric
00:42:26
Speaker
And Eric had said our logo had went live with their last update in GNR.
00:42:32
Speaker
So now we're in Turtles, GNR, and Avengers.
00:42:35
Speaker
Who's keeping track?
00:42:36
Speaker
No one's keeping track, right?
00:42:40
Speaker
But it's way cool.
00:42:42
Speaker
It's a definite honor that they're willing to put us in these games.
00:42:45
Speaker
And it's a big shout out to Stern and JJP for being friends of our show.
00:42:52
Speaker
So we appreciate what they do.
00:42:54
Speaker
So let's, I want to end on the thing that's on the very last of our list.
00:42:59
Speaker
I want that to do that last.
00:43:00
Speaker
So let's turn and hit March speculation and go from there.
00:43:07
Speaker
We're thinking that it's been a while since Stern announced, well, they announced Led Zeppelin.
Speculation on Upcoming Releases
00:43:18
Speaker
So usually when the premiums are coming out, then that means they're getting close to announcing another one.
00:43:27
Speaker
is usually at the end of March.
00:43:29
Speaker
We usually have a couple of companies reveal at that time.
00:43:33
Speaker
Uh, spooky is getting close to being done with Rick and Morty.
00:43:36
Speaker
It's been pretty dang close to 18 months.
00:43:42
Speaker
Same with, you know, you said Stern, but they usually do two weeks after TPF.
00:43:49
Speaker
It's been forever for CGC, so who knows there.
00:43:54
Speaker
Is it too soon for American Pinball?
00:43:56
Speaker
It's been a year for Hot Wheels, and they're promising to be on a faster track now.
00:44:02
Speaker
I would anticipate with American Pinball, I would say in the next two months they'll announce something.
00:44:11
Speaker
With Stern, I would probably say...
00:44:15
Speaker
I, you know, I, I don't think they'll announce this month.
00:44:19
Speaker
I think it'll be end of April.
00:44:22
Speaker
So I think it's, we're probably six weeks away just because they still have so much that they're clearing out and their demand that I think that they don't need to push it.
00:44:35
Speaker
And you announce when you need to put something else on the line, but they have a big old line already.
00:44:42
Speaker
And so I think they'll push that a little bit.
00:44:44
Speaker
Chicago Gaming, we know that they release when they're ready.
00:44:49
Speaker
And they don't need to do much because whatever they're going to release, we've already seen it, unless it's going to be an original one.
00:44:57
Speaker
So that's easy because they can just throw it out there like, oh, I played it.
00:45:04
Speaker
I remember that one.
00:45:07
Speaker
And if you're listening, CGC, I still firmly believe, and you guys are the ones that are doing this.
00:45:15
Speaker
You obviously know the statistics and stuff like that.
00:45:19
Speaker
I really firmly believe you should be making a remake one year and an original title the next.
00:45:26
Speaker
I think you could be slaying it right now, but...
00:45:30
Speaker
You guys have your own business.
00:45:32
Speaker
You know how you're doing it.
00:45:33
Speaker
I still firmly believe that would be amazing for the hobby.
00:45:38
Speaker
Well, at some point, they have to, right?
00:45:40
Speaker
There's only so many resurrection titles you can do.
00:45:43
Speaker
It's true, but you could span out your timeline on your resurrection titles while getting a foothold in the new market.
00:45:53
Speaker
They certainly have shown that they can make a quality play field.
00:45:57
Speaker
They make quality cabinets.
00:45:59
Speaker
And so they have the manufacturing down.
00:46:03
Speaker
Now it's the design, which is a tricky animal in itself.
00:46:09
Speaker
And what are we hearing from CGC?
00:46:11
Speaker
Is it just Cactus Canyon?
00:46:13
Speaker
Is there anything else even on the table?
00:46:17
Speaker
Well, if you go off what they've originally said, they've basically thrown out a list of things that are typically unlicensed but are still nostalgic, fun games.
00:46:32
Speaker
And so they have thrown out their Cactus Canyon.
00:46:36
Speaker
They've thrown out Big Bang Bar.
00:46:39
Speaker
They've thrown up Theater of Magic.
00:46:41
Speaker
They've thrown up Tales of the Arabian Nights.
00:46:46
Speaker
I would say a few more I would put on the list, personally.
00:46:50
Speaker
I would put Whitewater on the list.
00:46:53
Speaker
Whitewater is a great family game.
00:46:56
Speaker
And they would kill it with a topper.
00:47:01
Speaker
Like, whatever they would do on that Whitewater topper would be amazing.
00:47:06
Speaker
Then if they can get the license, and basically we all know that there is a price for everything, right?
00:47:16
Speaker
And so you could get, I know people, I am not a big fan of Adam's Family, but I know there are people who are.
00:47:26
Speaker
Twilight Zone, I have a Twilight Zone.
00:47:29
Speaker
It's an okay game.
00:47:30
Speaker
I don't have the same connection that other people have with it.
00:47:33
Speaker
So I think they would definitely do well by doing that one.
00:47:44
Speaker
You could even argue something like Terminator 2.
00:47:49
Speaker
I know people who would love a mint Terminator 2.
00:47:52
Speaker
We're getting into licensing issues with some of these.
00:47:56
Speaker
But they still do.
00:47:58
Speaker
Like Rothrill's, those Terminator games.
00:48:01
Speaker
And, uh, and really it's not, you know, with, uh, with Adam's family and they were able to make it, make it happen for the pinball arcade.
00:48:13
Speaker
So I think you can figure something out is what games would you put on that list?
00:48:19
Speaker
Josh, uh, remake wise.
00:48:22
Speaker
I definitely would like to see a whitewater.
00:48:28
Speaker
I don't know, Circus Voltaire, Theater of Magic.
00:48:31
Speaker
I think the problem... Here's the problem I have with 90s games, though, now.
00:48:35
Speaker
Now that I've gotten used to newer Stearns in my home.
00:48:39
Speaker
Well, not only are they slow, but there's not enough code depth there.
00:48:44
Speaker
And a modern player will blow through that code.
00:48:48
Speaker
They will get... It's a little bit like you can't release or it's difficult to release...
00:48:57
Speaker
like a Nintendo 1985 game now.
00:49:01
Speaker
Because you kind of blow through it.
00:49:03
Speaker
I, I actually, this is a little tangent, but growing up like ghosts and goblins was a crazy game and it was crazy hard.
00:49:11
Speaker
It was impossible really to beat it.
00:49:13
Speaker
So no one actually did.
00:49:14
Speaker
So you felt like you always were progressing in it.
00:49:17
Speaker
I bought like a remake for the switch and I'm, I've played it for maybe like eight hours, just,
00:49:24
Speaker
just an hour here, an hour there.
00:49:26
Speaker
And I'm pretty close to the end.
00:49:29
Speaker
And I don't think I'll play it again.
00:49:30
Speaker
This is more of a, hey, that was fun.
00:49:32
Speaker
It reminds me of that, but I don't know if I would do it.
00:49:35
Speaker
So it's the same type of thing.
00:49:38
Speaker
If you release a game that's 25 years old, okay.
00:49:43
Speaker
But unless it has that nostalgic component and you're not selling to tournament players, and tournament players, they don't buy Monster Bash.
00:49:53
Speaker
Because they will boss Monster Bash around.
00:50:00
Speaker
Monster Bash they'll still play because it's still... It's still fun, but it's not The Walking Dead.
00:50:07
Speaker
But Attack from Mars, that's the one caveat to all this.
00:50:11
Speaker
It doesn't have super deep code, but the game is challenging enough.
00:50:16
Speaker
It's still dangerous.
00:50:17
Speaker
A lot of those games, though, if they're dialed in correctly, they're not dangerous.
00:50:24
Speaker
And that's the reason why you don't see a lot of medieval madnesses out there in high-level tournaments because guess what?
00:50:33
Speaker
Keith Elwin can rule the kingdom every time.
00:50:37
Speaker
Well, and I think the other problem too is โ
00:50:40
Speaker
Well, this is something we alluded to before.
00:50:42
Speaker
I honestly, if you're going to make these remakes, I love it because you get a new in-box game.
00:50:48
Speaker
And I would rather almost every day buy a new in-box game.
00:50:51
Speaker
What was an Attack for Mars?
00:50:53
Speaker
Even Classic Edition?
00:50:55
Speaker
Yeah, it was still 6,000.
00:50:56
Speaker
And that was my thought.
00:50:58
Speaker
That's why I bought an Attack for Mars remake.
00:51:01
Speaker
Because I didn't want the headache of maintaining a 25-year-old game.
00:51:08
Speaker
And same with medieval madness and same with if they do cactus Canyon, I here's the thing with cactus
CGC's Strategy and Market Impact
00:51:14
Speaker
I think this is why it's lukewarm.
00:51:16
Speaker
There's not a ton of them out there.
00:51:17
Speaker
There's 900 of them.
00:51:19
Speaker
The code isn't complete.
00:51:21
Speaker
So it's hard to base an opinion off of a game that was never really finished in the first place.
00:51:27
Speaker
I think it's an idea.
00:51:28
Speaker
That's basically what it is.
00:51:30
Speaker
It's an idea and rarity.
00:51:32
Speaker
Well, and I think you look at the lineup and,
00:51:35
Speaker
You've got Medieval Madness, which is the quirky... It's the medieval times quirky stuff.
00:51:41
Speaker
Well, it's the Holy Grail.
00:51:44
Speaker
Then you have Attack for Mars, which is the quirky alien stuff.
00:51:48
Speaker
And you have Monster Bash, which actually uses the monster characters, but it's the quirky monster pinball machine.
00:51:55
Speaker
So you've got Cactus Canyon, which is the quirky cowboy pinball machine.
00:52:00
Speaker
You can see the theme going through these machines.
00:52:04
Speaker
And I don't know if it's just, it was overdone by time we got to cactus Canyon.
00:52:08
Speaker
I've played it multiple times on my phone because you can get it through the pinball arcade.
00:52:12
Speaker
Well, you can't anymore, but if you do have it downloaded to your phone, you can play it through the pinball arcade.
00:52:19
Speaker
If you purchase it before they lost the licensing and it is a fun game.
00:52:24
Speaker
I mean, it's hard to tell when you're playing it on your phone, it shoots well from what I can tell.
00:52:33
Speaker
That's the problem.
00:52:34
Speaker
I've played a Cactus Canyon in person, I think twice.
00:52:40
Speaker
And it's hard to base an opinion off of that.
00:52:42
Speaker
I've played Led Zeppelin more than I've played Cactus Canyon.
00:52:46
Speaker
I think it's a good game.
00:52:48
Speaker
But it comes down to... Because back to your point, is if you release a game that's 25 years old, it doesn't keep up with the newer games.
00:52:56
Speaker
But the problem with your analogy is, a lot of times when they re-release older games, it comes out for a fraction of the cost of the new games.
00:53:07
Speaker
I can go on Nintendo right now, and I can buy...
00:53:11
Speaker
Ghosts and Goblins, like you were talking about, it either comes free with my Nintendo yearly subscription, which is $20, and I get a slew of other games, or they just remade Ghosts and Goblins, and if I remember correctly, it is like $15 or $20 to buy.
00:53:28
Speaker
That is a third of a brand new game at $60.
00:53:33
Speaker
So that's where the hurdle is with remakes, in my opinion, is...
00:53:39
Speaker
you're coming out with a 25-year-old game, but you're still coming out at the same cost as a Stern Pro, as a Stern Premium on these.
00:53:47
Speaker
And so are they in the right price range?
00:53:51
Speaker
Right now they are.
00:53:52
Speaker
I mean, everything else is... COVID has definitely... And it's not just pinball.
00:53:56
Speaker
It's trading cards.
00:54:01
Speaker
Everything has went through the rough.
00:54:03
Speaker
Everything that's home-related, yes.
00:54:07
Speaker
It just, everything's went through the roof.
00:54:09
Speaker
I shouldn't have given away all my comic books like 10 years ago.
00:54:12
Speaker
No, you shouldn't have.
00:54:13
Speaker
You should have sold them right now for a premium.
00:54:16
Speaker
So that's my spill.
00:54:18
Speaker
That's my spill on the remakes.
00:54:21
Speaker
I've bought each one of them, except for meaningful madness.
00:54:23
Speaker
So I guess, sorry, two out of your three, I've loved the quality.
00:54:27
Speaker
I've never had an issue out of the box with either one of them.
00:54:31
Speaker
I just, I feel like we need more quicker.
00:54:35
Speaker
I appreciate you guys saying, staying radio silent, like radio silent until you're ready.
00:54:43
Speaker
I think that's one thing like either people need to not give CGC crap for not talking or they should not give deep root crap for always talking.
00:54:59
Speaker
Everybody knows my feelings on deep root.
00:55:01
Speaker
Um, at least, at least when they release, it's always a solid option.
00:55:07
Speaker
And so I, I, I'm totally fine with, with what CGC is doing.
00:55:14
Speaker
But yeah, it'll be interesting to see.
00:55:16
Speaker
And I'm certainly looking forward to it because they've never.
00:55:22
Speaker
They never they haven't failed us yet.
00:55:27
Speaker
And everything is completely solid.
00:55:30
Speaker
So, yeah, I'm always interested to play it.
00:55:34
Speaker
Now, I didn't buy Monster Bash, but my friend has Monster Bash and so I can play it when I want it.
00:55:40
Speaker
We'll see what happens if if the wide speculation is it's Cactus Canyon.
00:55:46
Speaker
But, you know, if it's Big Bang Bar, if it's, you know, they're going with the games that command the highest price.
00:55:54
Speaker
So that's everything right now.
00:55:56
Speaker
But I mean, the reason why they went with Medieval Madness first is because it was seventeen thousand dollars.
00:56:02
Speaker
So you could remake it for 10, still make a profit.
00:56:05
Speaker
And so, and so I, there's a reason why, and it's just, it's, it's dollars and cents why they're choosing the games they have, but you know, it'll be interesting to see eventually if they get back down to, and I know there would be people lined up to buy Indiana Jones, the pinball adventure, even though I don't think it's the best game.
00:56:23
Speaker
I think it's a fun game, but I don't, don't think it's their best one.
00:56:26
Speaker
but because you have Indiana Jones, right?
00:56:30
Speaker
Well, and the interesting part to tie this all back together, if you haven't listened to the pinball show at a midweek edition where they interviewed Tom Capera, who was the original designer for Cactus Canyon, one of the statements he had made is that CGC hasn't contacted him.
00:56:48
Speaker
Granted, he might just be saying that, and he's actually been back behind the scenes, but
00:56:53
Speaker
helping with it, but it sounds like, yeah, that's all speculation.
00:56:58
Speaker
That's that a hundred percent speculation.
00:57:00
Speaker
But I found it interesting that Tom had said that they haven't contacted him.
00:57:09
Speaker
I know I don't want to dig.
00:57:10
Speaker
I don't want to really open this door.
00:57:11
Speaker
But, you know, one person we didn't hit in March.
00:57:15
Speaker
Do you think Deep Root is ready?
00:57:16
Speaker
Because Stephen Bowden or Steve Bowden was on final round talking about Food Truck.
00:57:22
Speaker
Do you think it's time that we see Food Truck from Deep Root?
00:57:29
Speaker
We'll leave it at that.
00:57:32
Speaker
They haven't made anything.
00:57:34
Speaker
The only thing they've made is empty promises.
00:57:38
Speaker
Their biggest, like their big coming out party is capped at what?
00:57:45
Speaker
And Stern does that in a week.
00:57:48
Speaker
And so like, I'm sorry, right now they're not even a viable company.
00:57:54
Speaker
Like they're kind of along the same lines as the crazy carnival guys.
00:58:00
Speaker
And it's at least those guys made some games, man.
00:58:04
Speaker
I wish, I wish that would have worked.
00:58:06
Speaker
Why haven't we heard from those guys?
00:58:07
Speaker
That should be someone we should be calling pinball circus to figure out where the crap is.
00:58:16
Speaker
I, I kind of think that's what's happened.
00:58:19
Speaker
There was lukewarm reception, so these two dudes are like, let's not worry about it.
00:58:23
Speaker
I think what happens is you have to time and strike when it's right.
00:58:31
Speaker
How about we look back in the Wayback Machine and what about if those games came out in 2012, 2013?
00:58:39
Speaker
The run up to that was
00:58:48
Speaker
This is just Stern, but ACDC, you have X-Men, but before ACDC, you have Transformers, you have Tron, Rolling Stone, Avatar, Iron Miss.
00:58:59
Speaker
So there's some good hits in there, but there's some misses and people are like, yeah, okay.
00:59:05
Speaker
And then you get Metallica, which turned out to be a great game.
00:59:09
Speaker
Then you have Star Trek and you have Mustang.
00:59:11
Speaker
Then you have Walking Dead.
00:59:12
Speaker
Then you have WrestleMania, the huge hit that was.
00:59:15
Speaker
Then you have Kiss, Game of Thrones.
00:59:17
Speaker
Like you have some of these games that have really grown over time.
00:59:22
Speaker
Like, are you going to... Okay, so in the last three years, are you going to spend $8,000 to $10,000 on a Kingpin?
00:59:34
Speaker
Would you buy an Iron Maiden?
00:59:35
Speaker
Would you buy a Deadpool?
00:59:37
Speaker
Would you buy a Black Knight?
00:59:38
Speaker
Would you buy an Elvira's House of Horrors?
00:59:42
Speaker
Would you buy a Guns N' Roses?
00:59:43
Speaker
Like, I think that the moment has passed.
00:59:47
Speaker
But I think here's the thing.
00:59:48
Speaker
Because here was their goal.
00:59:51
Speaker
They were going to make Kingpin, and then they were going to use the money that they made from Kingpin to make Pinball Circus.
00:59:57
Speaker
That was like the original goal was to make Pinball Circus, because there's only two in the world, if I remember correctly.
01:00:02
Speaker
And one's at the Pinball Hall of Fame in Las Vegas.
01:00:04
Speaker
Yeah, and it's a gimmick game.
01:00:07
Speaker
You play it once, and then you're like, oh, okay, well, I got it through the clown mouth.
01:00:12
Speaker
And that's the payoff, right?
01:00:14
Speaker
That's the wizard mode.
01:00:15
Speaker
You have hit the wizard mode by getting up four ramps.
01:00:19
Speaker
Yeah, but I think, I still think there's a market for that right now.
01:00:22
Speaker
I think if you did a limited run, you got to make it limited.
01:00:28
Speaker
How many do you think would make it profitable?
01:00:31
Speaker
Do you think you'd sell 500 of those?
01:00:34
Speaker
I guarantee there's 500 people out there
01:00:41
Speaker
that are like, there's only two in the world right now, and you're telling me I could have one of 500, so there'll be 502 in the whole world.
01:00:48
Speaker
And it's obviously got a rep to it.
01:00:50
Speaker
Same with Kingpin.
01:00:51
Speaker
Kingpin is a decently playing game.
01:00:54
Speaker
But you saw how big Bane Bar did.
01:00:58
Speaker
I think the same thing happens with Kingpin.
01:01:01
Speaker
Joust doesn't have a ton.
01:01:02
Speaker
You could go back and do Joust.
01:01:04
Speaker
No one's going to buy Joust.
01:01:10
Speaker
It's one of those things that's limited by supply and not demand.
01:01:16
Speaker
I think you're going to tap out your demand really fast.
01:01:19
Speaker
I think it's hard though because right now it's hard to tell you โ tell what is successful and what's not because it seems like everything in the pinball industry is selling like hotcakes.
01:01:29
Speaker
It doesn't matter what it is.
01:01:30
Speaker
Like a year or two ago before COVID, you could go on and almost find any pinball machine for sale.
01:01:37
Speaker
Even if it was at a ridiculous price, you could find it for sale on Pinside.
01:01:41
Speaker
Now it's hard to find any pinball machine for sale on Pinside, used or new.
01:01:48
Speaker
Yeah, and that's true.
01:01:49
Speaker
I think the only thing that has been in stock is Stranger Things, which actually I think would be a decent game.
01:01:54
Speaker
Like I think it'd be fine.
01:01:56
Speaker
Like I would take a Stranger Things.
01:01:58
Speaker
So that's what, okay, so tie this all back.
01:02:01
Speaker
That's our March speculation.
01:02:03
Speaker
It sounds like we kind of agree we might be seeing something.
01:02:07
Speaker
Well, we'll definitely see something from Stern because we're coming up on there.
01:02:12
Speaker
Time to reveal something new.
01:02:15
Speaker
We don't know anything about CGC.
01:02:17
Speaker
We would assume it's been over two years since Monster Bash released.
01:02:22
Speaker
So we're getting really close to what, and I, you know, the ones that we mentioned are the likely candidates, right?
01:02:31
Speaker
I mean, it, this is absolutely all speculation, but they're all candidates.
01:02:37
Speaker
And then, uh, spooky is another speculation.
01:02:42
Speaker
Um, maybe I, I pretty for sure they're close enough that they should be revealing.
01:02:46
Speaker
So that way they will be wrapping up the Rick and Morty's and going directly into their next game.
01:02:54
Speaker
Who else do we say?
01:02:55
Speaker
Definitely not Deep Root, I guess.
01:02:57
Speaker
And maybe maybe American Pinball, maybe American Pinball.
01:03:00
Speaker
OK, I would say the K. The predictable options would be Stern, CGC, American Pinball.
01:03:10
Speaker
OK, possibly spooky.
01:03:13
Speaker
And come on, Deep Root.
01:03:15
Speaker
They just need to actually prove they're a real company.
01:03:18
Speaker
So I would take yours, but I would flip it.
01:03:19
Speaker
I would flip American and Spooky.
01:03:21
Speaker
I could almost guarantee a Spooky, but I would be hesitant on an American.
01:03:26
Speaker
So that's the beginning of March.
01:03:28
Speaker
We'll find out here at the end of March.
01:03:29
Speaker
Let's give it a little bit over a month.
01:03:32
Speaker
I'd say six weeks because I think everybody's behind making games.
01:03:38
Speaker
So don't let me forget.
01:03:40
Speaker
We need to reveal our winner for the Houdini Translight 2.
01:03:45
Speaker
That would be great.
01:03:47
Speaker
I want to get into this.
01:03:48
Speaker
I know we can take some time on this last topic.
Theories on Winter Releases' Reception
01:03:53
Speaker
I definitely want to dig into.
01:03:56
Speaker
Josh has a take on this, and I actually have a different take.
01:04:00
Speaker
So let's find out.
01:04:02
Speaker
So I've been sitting here.
01:04:03
Speaker
I've been thinking because we were talking about Zeppelin, I felt like Zeppelin kind of had a lukewarm reception.
01:04:09
Speaker
I mean, people loved it, but it doesn't have the buzz.
01:04:12
Speaker
I feel like Avengers got, I don't feel like it has the buzz that turtles got.
01:04:18
Speaker
So I started thinking back and I'm wondering if, and I want to know from the audience, like,
01:04:23
Speaker
I want you to comment on our post.
01:04:26
Speaker
It's going to be called the winter curse.
01:04:29
Speaker
And the reason I am calling it the winter curse is I feel like when Stern releases a pinball machine, anywhere in that November to January area, it is lukewarm at best.
01:04:42
Speaker
And I can't, I can't speculate on cells because we have no heart.
01:04:48
Speaker
Well, we can speculate, but we have no hard numbers.
01:04:54
Speaker
But I want to go through this list really quick.
01:04:55
Speaker
I'm going to give you the list, and I think it speaks for itself.
01:05:03
Speaker
So 2020s was Zeppelin.
01:05:05
Speaker
It's hard to give a definite if it's a lukewarm.
01:05:09
Speaker
Yeah, jury's still out.
01:05:12
Speaker
And then last year's was Stranger Things.
01:05:15
Speaker
That was obviously not received well.
01:05:20
Speaker
And granted, that was more design than it was themed.
01:05:30
Speaker
Sorry, Stranger Things was 19.
01:05:33
Speaker
Well, it was January 2019, but like I said, we're going by winter release.
01:05:43
Speaker
Definitely, the artwork was fantastic once people started playing it.
01:05:46
Speaker
They said it was too basic, and the gameplay was not where it should be for Modern Stern.
01:05:53
Speaker
The year before that, Guardians of the Galaxy.
01:05:56
Speaker
It is a great game now, and a lot of people revere it as a very fun game.
01:06:00
Speaker
But when it first came out, there was a lot of hate on this game.
01:06:08
Speaker
The year before that, Aerosmith.
01:06:11
Speaker
It is a good game.
01:06:12
Speaker
But when I talk modern Sterns, even let's just talk dad rock pinball machines, I do not feel like Aerosmith deserves the credit it should when you start talking dad rock.
01:06:24
Speaker
Obviously, ACDC is going to come up, Metallica, all those games.
01:06:29
Speaker
We're still going back.
01:06:30
Speaker
This is each year.
01:06:32
Speaker
And the next one is the vault of Spider-Man.
01:06:36
Speaker
And you cannot tell me this thing was received.
01:06:39
Speaker
The artwork was good.
01:06:41
Speaker
Everything else was trash on it.
01:06:43
Speaker
Well, actually, okay.
01:06:44
Speaker
I thought the skulls were good.
01:06:45
Speaker
And this is, yeah.
01:06:49
Speaker
It wasn't received super well.
01:06:50
Speaker
It actually plays pretty well.
01:06:52
Speaker
And people just didn't like the...
01:06:55
Speaker
Well, the funny thing is they weren't over the top with the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man theme, but they were less impressed with the cartoony Ultimate Spider-Man theme.
01:07:09
Speaker
We're still going back.
01:07:10
Speaker
We're almost seven years back now.
01:07:16
Speaker
You cannot argue with me that this one's fantastic.
01:07:20
Speaker
So I'm calling this the Winter Curve.
01:07:21
Speaker
That one is fantastic because Raymond has owned five of them.
01:07:25
Speaker
Okay, but still, I'm calling it the winner curse because I just went through one, two, three, four, five, six, seven games.
01:07:33
Speaker
Like I said, we went back seven years, seven games.
01:07:37
Speaker
I would argue the best one out of that whole list is probably Aerosmith.
01:07:43
Speaker
I'd say Guardians.
01:07:45
Speaker
You think, well, sorry, I'm going to go with at the time.
01:07:49
Speaker
You mean how they were received at release?
01:07:53
Speaker
Okay, that's fair.
01:07:56
Speaker
I just, I feel like there's something if, if Stern's releasing in the winter, it almost feels like a miss and I could be entirely wrong.
01:08:03
Speaker
I mean, looking at this last, looking at this list, fast forward, stranger things has obviously before COVID was a thing.
01:08:10
Speaker
It was doing fantastic on location.
01:08:12
Speaker
Guardians has become a very better game.
01:08:15
Speaker
I just, I think there's something here.
01:08:17
Speaker
I feel like your, your best games are coming out in your, your spring, summer and fall.
01:08:26
Speaker
Fall is hit or miss.
01:08:28
Speaker
But I think overall, your winter window, if you had to go to three titles a year instead of the four, you get rid of the winter title.
01:08:39
Speaker
It's just my saying.
01:08:40
Speaker
Yeah, I guess my pushback would be that when you look at a lot of these games, they were released on very basic code.
01:08:52
Speaker
And so if you look at mine, I don't remember super well when like Metallica and Star Trek came out, so I can't tell about the evolution of that.
01:09:05
Speaker
However, Mustang came out.
01:09:07
Speaker
It was pretty, you know, they, the code actually improved.
01:09:11
Speaker
It wasn't a huge seller.
01:09:12
Speaker
Walking Dead when it came out was a dog.
01:09:16
Speaker
You remember people talked about the Hick Hillbilly, like the horrible call outs.
01:09:22
Speaker
Dog Kiss was never a big hit.
01:09:24
Speaker
It's kind of grown later, but it kind of came out with a dud.
01:09:32
Speaker
Ghostbusters art was great, but people hated the code.
01:09:36
Speaker
Obviously Batman 66 for multiple reasons came out and was on bare bones code and people killed it because they said the layout was horrible.
01:09:46
Speaker
It doesn't matter what you do with code.
01:09:48
Speaker
The layout's horrible.
01:09:49
Speaker
And now people like it.
01:09:52
Speaker
Guardians of the galaxy, same thing.
01:09:53
Speaker
The code was so basic.
01:09:57
Speaker
And Deadpool, same thing.
01:09:58
Speaker
They're like, yeah, it's kind of clunky.
01:09:59
Speaker
I don't really get it.
01:10:04
Speaker
It's kind of this interesting thing.
01:10:06
Speaker
I would say the only ones that universally came out and said, oh, wow, that's great.
01:10:12
Speaker
Like when the, you know, from the start.
01:10:18
Speaker
Iron Maiden came out.
01:10:19
Speaker
The code was great, but also, yes, it's a great game, but Keith was working on this game for four years.
01:10:27
Speaker
And so it kind of came pre done.
01:10:32
Speaker
And then when star Wars came out, super complex code.
01:10:36
Speaker
And it's still, it still hasn't warmed up to be like a fan favorite.
01:10:42
Speaker
It never really got that second push to make it great, except what people do like the comic version of it.
01:10:49
Speaker
I actually preferred the, the clip art version, but you know,
01:10:53
Speaker
Jurassic Park, again, a Keith game, it came out, the code was pretty much done.
01:10:58
Speaker
Elvira, when it first came out, it was a little Luke, but because Lyman's been working that along the code.
01:11:03
Speaker
So I think what you are seeing more is an evolution on code is making a bigger deal.
01:11:12
Speaker
Now, this will be the first time that a winter release has come out with near complete code.
01:11:22
Speaker
And so I think that's going to be what will be the deciding factor.
01:11:28
Speaker
I agree with you to a point that it seems to be a little bit of a nadir
01:11:34
Speaker
That it has been a less well-received game, but I also think the code was never there.
01:11:41
Speaker
And now that they have hired more coders, they're able to spit out the code a lot faster.
01:11:47
Speaker
You know, Avengers is already at 1.0 code, right?
01:11:54
Speaker
And that came out less than six months ago.
01:11:57
Speaker
And remember how long we used to wait for that stuff.
01:12:00
Speaker
So I'm hoping that that's what it is.
01:12:06
Speaker
But yeah, you do have something valid.
01:12:08
Speaker
There is something there.
01:12:10
Speaker
I don't think it's quite as cut it and dry, but there's something to what you're saying.
01:12:13
Speaker
Yeah, like I said, I feel like the hits are not in the winter months.
01:12:19
Speaker
And I don't know if Christmas plays into that.
01:12:22
Speaker
I don't know if everyone's feeling broke.
01:12:25
Speaker
Even if you're not of the Christian faith, I mean, a lot of people celebrate some type of gift-giving holiday.
01:12:33
Speaker
holiday at the in november december like november december is like we're ramping down it's been a crazy year let's get it with family let's let's have some meals and so usually people are feeling broke from either traveling or from or gift giving whatever it may be i i wonder if that plays into it winter blues maybe just like january and february people are still kind of like
01:12:59
Speaker
booting up the day and then March comes along and the warm weather comes out and the spring fever.
01:13:04
Speaker
I also think that with Led Zeppelin, you were talking about not having a lot of people talk about it.
01:13:09
Speaker
I think there is something to be said about a slightly older demographic.
01:13:14
Speaker
I mean, this is a seventies band.
01:13:16
Speaker
This isn't like an eighties band.
01:13:19
Speaker
um and so i think that there's a little bit that you're you're looking in the 50 and 60 year olds who actually had the possible chance of seeing led zeppelin yeah like there's no chance i would have seen led zeppelin i was born in 74. so unless i went to a concert when i was six um and so like i'm
01:13:41
Speaker
Are they as active in promoting and talking?
01:13:44
Speaker
I mean, there are some really big promoters out there, but I just don't know how much they are going on pin side or posting about the stuff.
01:13:56
Speaker
I wonder what the sales are like.
01:13:58
Speaker
I wish we had more numbers, but that's a good question.
01:14:02
Speaker
I've liked Led Zeppelin so far, the five games.
01:14:05
Speaker
Well, and like we said, jury's still out.
01:14:08
Speaker
Hopefully, Led Zeppelin breaks the winter curse is what I'm calling it.
01:14:13
Speaker
I feel like a lot of these games are either underappreciated or they just never got out of that rut they were stuck in when they first came out.
01:14:22
Speaker
So reply to us and tell us what you think if there's something going on about the winter months and their release.
01:14:31
Speaker
And obviously there must not be too big of a deal because if there was, Stern would just stop releasing in the winter months.
01:14:39
Speaker
And so there's, there's gotta be some validity like against my argument, but I just, I, like I said, I feel like if, if I was a designer, I would be straying away from those winter months.
01:14:51
Speaker
And I just got thinking about this.
01:14:53
Speaker
If you look at Keith L one's design schedule, um,
01:14:57
Speaker
uh iron maiden was in the spring dracet park was in the summer avengers was in the fall his next release if we go by just guesstimation of of where everything else is released he may be the next winter release uh you mean next year yes yeah maybe either either december or january yeah
01:15:24
Speaker
That'll be interesting to see how that goes.
01:15:27
Speaker
Really quickly, back, because one thing we didn't cover with a possible Stern release here, the end of the month, beginning of next month.
01:15:35
Speaker
Who's the designer?
01:15:37
Speaker
Let's hurry and run back through Steve Richie just did, Zeppelin.
01:15:40
Speaker
We had Keith Owen on Avengers.
01:15:42
Speaker
We had Borg on Turtles.
01:15:46
Speaker
Eddie on Stranger Things.
01:15:51
Speaker
I don't know if Gomez is going to be throwing something out there.
01:15:54
Speaker
I mean, he's, he's always been the kind of the on-call guy, you know, the, Hey, we need a pinch runner.
01:16:00
Speaker
So he throws him in.
01:16:01
Speaker
I mean, that's, we all know the story about Deadpool, which turned out to be a great success, but I mean, George is running the company.
01:16:09
Speaker
So is it possible George does one at maybe, I think it's more likely that we'll see an Eddie design.
01:16:17
Speaker
And we'll see what happens.
01:16:19
Speaker
Do you think we end up having a left field in the fact that we have maybe like another, not Dennis Norman, but one of those Kapow titles or something where the designer isn't always a guarantee lineup at Stern, but they were contracted to do a pinball machine?
01:16:33
Speaker
I think there's more uncertainty about this next release than there probably has been with previous releases.
01:16:40
Speaker
Based off the timeline, I would assume it's Eddie.
01:16:43
Speaker
I, that, that seems right.
01:16:45
Speaker
If Eddie's lined up to do another one, I would say that it's makes sense to have Eddie do the next one.
01:16:53
Speaker
I'm trying to think what other designers am I leaving out at Stern?
01:16:56
Speaker
Well, the big three would be Keith's team, and then you have John Borg's team, and then you have Steve Ritchie's team.
01:17:06
Speaker
And they seem to do well in keeping those teams together.
01:17:10
Speaker
It's not like they're mixing and matching much.
01:17:16
Speaker
So, yeah, I think that at least the designers likely either โ
01:17:24
Speaker
If I were to bet, I would say we're going to see the next Brian 80 game.
01:17:31
Speaker
Like I said, unless if it's a contract design.
01:17:34
Speaker
That's what I would say.
01:17:35
Speaker
Because looking back, back over the list, unless if it's a re-release, like another Star Wars comic.
01:17:43
Speaker
Yeah, like a vault type thing or like a home pin.
01:17:48
Speaker
They have been on record that says they want three cornerstone games, right?
01:17:54
Speaker
And so the third cornerstone game is probably around April, right?
01:17:59
Speaker
Yeah, just looking at the track record, it's more than likely got to be Eddie because we've had Richie.
01:18:09
Speaker
This is going chronologically.
01:18:10
Speaker
Richie, Elwynn, Borg, Eddie, and then Dennis Norman, which would be a contract, and then Elwynn.
01:18:22
Speaker
Yeah, and Dennis was in the can for a while.
01:18:26
Speaker
I mean, that was kind of when it was ready.
01:18:30
Speaker
But we can see it.
01:18:31
Speaker
I'm seeing very consistent here because, like I said, after Eddie, it went back to Elwin, then Richie, then Borg, then Gomez.
01:18:42
Speaker
And then another Gomez with Beatles and Deadpool.
01:18:46
Speaker
The only ones that seem to jump a little bit is it seems that Elwin's on a terror of designing faster.
01:18:55
Speaker
Because if you look at monsters, Borg, Knight, Ritchie, and then you have Jurassic Park, Elwyn.
01:19:01
Speaker
Then Elvira's a throwout, right?
01:19:05
Speaker
And then you have Stranger Things, which is Eddie.
01:19:07
Speaker
And then you have Borg.
01:19:09
Speaker
And then if you look at the previous, Ritchie followed before, but then Ritchie didn't, and it ended up being Elwyn.
01:19:18
Speaker
So then Ritchie was after that.
01:19:22
Speaker
I'm sure they mix and match a little bit just depending on some release schedules because it's not like they... I'm sure they have a few games that are ready and they just need to make sure that it lines up with whatever they want to release.
01:19:37
Speaker
So that's what I'm bringing it down to.
01:19:39
Speaker
It's either a Gomez slash contract design or it's an Eddie.
01:19:42
Speaker
Eddie's up to bat.
01:19:44
Speaker
At least from the timeline.
01:19:48
Speaker
Oh, let's hurry and do our giveaway.
Technical Issues and Recording Troubles
01:19:51
Speaker
Let's, you know, the last episode was fun.
01:19:54
Speaker
The Zencaster that we usually record with decided to update their website.
01:20:00
Speaker
And it was very nice of them because I hadn't a clue until we got into the recording session with Jack Hager and Dave Fix and with Scott.
01:20:09
Speaker
And it was kind of fun to learn because I couldn't get into the recording session.
01:20:14
Speaker
Once I got in, then it kicked me out.
01:20:16
Speaker
We couldn't get Jack in.
01:20:20
Speaker
And then at the end of everything...
01:20:22
Speaker
I was grateful that all your guys' stuff uploaded, but mine did not.
01:20:27
Speaker
And I had to go back through and rerecord all my lines, which is always oh so fun.
01:20:32
Speaker
And it just, it was, it was just weird.
01:20:36
Speaker
I've, I ended up contacting Zencaster and they were, they were generous enough to tell, tell me that, that you could still record with their own website.
01:20:44
Speaker
They gave me the old website.
01:20:46
Speaker
That's actually what we're using tonight, but they said that they've made the adjustments and the changes to the new website.
01:20:51
Speaker
We'll see if we keep it on classic or whatnot.
01:20:55
Speaker
It was a lot of work.
Community Engagement and Giveaways
01:20:59
Speaker
But like I was saying, Dayfix is generous enough to give away a Houdini Translight.
01:21:05
Speaker
We're going to do that right now.
01:21:06
Speaker
The agreement was if you went on, commented, shared, liked, we would put you in for the drawing.
01:21:15
Speaker
We have a handful of people.
01:21:16
Speaker
We got a decent amount of people entering in for this.
01:21:19
Speaker
So let's hurry and go up and down the list.
01:21:25
Speaker
And landing on Scott.
01:21:41
Speaker
So I will give you your information.
01:21:44
Speaker
We'll get you in touch with American Pinball.
01:21:46
Speaker
We'll get you your Translight.
01:21:48
Speaker
Thanks for entering.
01:21:49
Speaker
And thanks for listening to our episode.
01:21:52
Speaker
So I think that pretty much does it for us tonight.
01:21:55
Speaker
If you remember, please message in for the Winter Curse on your opinions.
01:22:03
Speaker
You got anything else for us, Scott, before we give our outro?
01:22:06
Speaker
No, I think it's great.
01:22:07
Speaker
I mean, certainly.
01:22:08
Speaker
And you know what?
01:22:09
Speaker
Actually, I do want to know.
01:22:10
Speaker
I want you to tell me what you're playing right now.
01:22:12
Speaker
And of all the games that has really connected with you over the last couple of months, what is the one that you have really gravitated towards?
01:22:19
Speaker
For me, it's been Avengers.
01:22:22
Speaker
But I'm kind of wondering what you guys have been playing, because maybe I need to branch out and try some other things.
01:22:29
Speaker
You need to get on the bandwagon for Scott Pilgrim versus the world.
01:22:33
Speaker
OK, well, that's not available right now.
01:22:38
Speaker
No, it's always fun recording with you, Scott.
01:22:40
Speaker
It's been a while since it's just been me and you.
01:22:42
Speaker
It's been kind of interview heavy lately.
01:22:44
Speaker
you know but i think it's fun i i love being able to have the people on and we're going to talk about different people coming up but also if you guys have suggestions of people you want us to talk to uh i love talking to the interview people because it it brings a different dimension uh other than josh and i just talking however it's always a lot of fun for us to do it old school and just uh talk about what we think is going on and
01:23:10
Speaker
And really, it's been a while since we've been able to talk about our own gaming habits.
01:23:16
Speaker
So go ahead, Josh.
