Live on location from Tokyo Japan... here's everything we experienced on Day One of Star Wars Celebration! Lots of surprise announcements today... be sure to tune in! But apologies in advance... I'm half asleep recording this, so it's a little short(er), a little windy, and a little incoherent.

Hello, Short Troopers from Tokyo, Japan. i am here to report on day one of Star Wars Celebration. I'm actually right now outside waiting to get into Team Lab Planets, which is kind of a art installation type thing. I don't know. My son told me it was the coolest thing he saw in Tokyo when he was here a month ago, so we got tickets.

We recorded an episode of the Learning Geeks podcast last week, and I made a bold prediction there. I predicted that they would officially announce the next movie coming from director Sean Levy, starring Ryan Gosling, and that Sean Levy and Ryan Gosling would actually show up during the Mandalorian and Grogu movie panel. Well, sure enough, I was right. It came true.

Now, we did not have the good fortune to get tickets for that panel, but we were outside watching the live taping. Well, not taping. It was a live streaming of the Star Wars show.

And i was checking Facebook and sure enough somebody who was in the hall posted that that indeed had occurred. We were out watching Hayden Christensen an interview with him celebrating his birthday. It was really fun.

But i kind of thought, hey, you know what? People tend to be on the panels, the celebrities tend to be on the panels and then come out and get on the Star Wars show live.

And sure enough, that is exactly what happened. So we were standing there waiting for it to happen. It sure did. We wound up being about 50 feet away from Ryan Gosling and Shawn Levy, and they were interviewed about this really exciting.
New Star Wars Movie with Ryan Gosling

It's called Star Wars Starfighter.

Of course, that's all we know because, hey, it's Star Wars. Everything's secret. But Star Wars Starfighter, I can totally buy the idea of Ryan Gosling being like a Starfighter jockey. sounds really cool.

That movie will be out for Memorial Day of 2027. So going to have Star Wars movies in the theater for the next two Memorial Days after this one.

Next year, of course, will be Mandalorian and Grogu. They did show some footage. From that, that I saw a bootleg video of, it looked very cool. Mando going in and basically wreaking havoc on the inside of an AT-AT, just destroying stormtroopers left and right.

Also Sigourney Weaver was there and she revealed that her character is a starfighter pilot as well. So I think that's going to be really intriguing. We did get a chance to glimpse Jon Favreau Sigourney Weaver at that Star Wars Live stage.

I should tell you too, if you're interested in all this, ah check out the Star Wars Live feed on YouTube. It's kind of like a couch con type thing. You can really watch a lot of what's going on at the convention just by tuning into that stream.

traffic noise actually I'm outside I'm very tired I'm still a little jet-lagged but it's okay let's see what else happened today that was the big news was the Star Wars Starfighter movie we got a chance to see a couple of interesting panels ah one panel was called Ahsoka's Journey Through the Underworld, something like that. That probably wasn't the exact title, but it was something like that.

And it was run by a guy named John Butcher, who is the executive director of the Joseph Campbell Foundation. And he was talking all about the Joseph Campbell hero's journey mythological themes through the Ahsoka series. And it was very interesting. It made me want to go back and watch Ahsoka and kind of check in on those. But fascinating our conversation.

Some very smart people in there asking some very smart questions. ah But I did connect with John. after the panel and invited him to be on this very podcast. And he said he would.

So look for that in the future. I will connect with him and try to get him on the show. And we'll have a good old talk about Star Wars and the hero's journey and Joseph Campbell, just really, really great stuff.
Lucasfilm Animation Retrospective

We also got to go into the animation panel. So The main room for that was sold out, but we were able to go into an overflow room and watch it over video. Dave Filoni was there and Athena Portillo, the two main head honchos of Lucasfilm Animation.

And yeah it was mostly, you know, for a lot of it, it was kind of a 20 year retrospective on Lucasfilm animation and everything that they've done. So that was fun. It's always great to have Filoni on a panel. He's very entertaining and very informative. So he told some good stories. That was great.

But then the highlights there were the next thing, of course, coming out is Tales from the Underworld.
Focus on Asajj Ventress and Cad Bane

That will drop, I think every episode of that will drop on May fourth And they actually showed us the first episode of that, which was a story about Asajj Ventress.

And it was really good. It was very solid episode of animated Star Wars. I believe that um just kind of like last year with Tales of the...

of the Empire or Tales of the Jedi. I'm getting confused. ah They tend to rotate around, you know, a few different characters. I guess was Tales of the Jedi, right, with Ahsoka and Count Dooku.

um This one is going to rotate around Asajj Ventress and Cad Bane, the bounty hunter. So I think it's going to be really interesting.

Like I said, the first episode was great. We got to watch the whole thing and it's solid. So look forward to that on May the 4th.
Darth Maul's New Animation Series

The other big news was a big announcement that the next full-on animation series coming from Lucasfilm Animation is called Maul Shadow Lord about Darth Maul.

um Everything that happens after he gets his legs back and showed him we we saw a trailer for it and it showed him having a fight with an Inquisitor. So we know that it happens sometimes between episode three and episode four and looks very, very good. There was there was one scene where he was He was talking with a woman who I think had a British accent. I was hoping that it's Kira, because you know i have a soft spot in my heart for Kira, and hopefully it was her.

But either way, it looks like it's going to be it's going to be really good. um What else was Star Wars Celebration? It was just a fun day. We met some really neat people, had lunch with a woman who actually worked on the Star Cruiser. So she and I were kind of reminiscing about the good times on the Star Cruiser.

Show Floor Experiences

And i think that's about it. ah You know, as far as the convention goes itself, the show floor was a little a little sparse this year. I mean, there's a lot of big booths with a lot of the big vendors like Hasbro, Hot Toys. The Hot Toys, they had a queue that was at least four hours long for people to buy the you know the the Star Wars toys that cost several hundred dollars.

We did not wait in that line. I did not buy any of those. But usually I'm used to seeing more vendors out there who are selling, you know, like old toys or t-shirts or stuff like that. Not a lot of that this year.

um Of course, being in Japan, all of the crew, the staffers, very nice, very polite. And we had a good time. So it was a good day one. it was very full. ah We're looking forward to day two tomorrow.

For this, we do actually have tickets for the Andor panel, so we will be there. I'm hoping that they show us an episode of the new season. If not, we only have to wait a few more days for it.
