Star Wars news and storytelling evolution

00:00:00
Speaker
we're bringing you Star Wars news and a fun Star Wars story, and we're doing it real quick. Aren't you a little short? Aren't you a little short? Aren't you a little short for a Star Trooper?
00:00:14
Speaker
Welcome back to Short for a Stormtrooper. And, you know, we're in a little bit of a lull, I think, when it comes to Star Wars fandom. I mean, we had an amazing few months with Andor coming out. We've talked about Andor a lot on this show, but I absolutely loved it. I feel like it changed the texture of Star Wars storytelling forever and in a good way.
00:00:38
Speaker
ah Not everything is going to be like Andor moving forward, but it's great to see a few different styles coming to the Star Wars universe. Anyway, like I said, I've talked about that enough, but like I said, we're in a little bit of a lull. Now, admittedly.
00:00:54
Speaker
I am not super tuned into the books. I am way, way, way behind on the Star Wars novels. My understanding, and you can correct me if I'm wrong, is that either The High Republic has come to an end or is quickly coming to an end. So that whole sequence of books is wrapping up. I don't think we're done with that portion of Star Wars history.
00:01:16
Speaker
I think we'll see more from there. But the book series of The High Republic is coming to an end. I have no idea what's happening in the comic books. Don't even try me, I don't know.
00:01:28
Speaker
um I like the comic books, but I just don't get a chance to stay on top of them.

Upcoming Star Wars games and series

00:01:32
Speaker
In the games department, I talked last week about some of the tabletop games. We're going to be talking here very shortly a little bit more about the Star Wars role-playing game.
00:01:41
Speaker
But in terms of of computer games and video games, we know that there's a couple things brewing in the console department. The final chapter of the Jedi series is coming, which we're looking forward to, but I'm not sure what the release date is going to be on that.
00:01:56
Speaker
Coming up, I think the quickest, though, is Star Wars Zero Company. This is the strategy game that's going to be coming out pretty soon. And it is very similar to XCOM, if you've ever played that. A lot of the same people who worked on XCOM will be working on this.
00:02:12
Speaker
So you'll get to kind of be the commander of a squad clone troopers. And that will be really fun. So that's what's going on there. But, you know, my main... channel for Star Wars is filmed stuff. So TV shows and movies.
00:02:29
Speaker
And with that, it kind of feels like we're in a little bit of a holding pattern. So I did take a look to figure out what is coming next. And I think that the next thing that we're gonna see coming out with the Star Wars brand on it is Star Wars Visions Season 3.
00:02:46
Speaker
Now, if you remember my my update on this from Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo, I went to the breakout panel on this. ah This should be an exciting season of Visions.
00:02:58
Speaker
Star Wars Vision Season 1 was all Japanese anime, different stories in the Star Wars universe. Some of them fit right in some of them super kooky. The idea of twin Star Destroyers joined at the hip, essentially.
00:03:15
Speaker
Not sure if I ever bought that, but it was fun. It was fun to see kind of what if alternate reality versions of Star Wars. Then in season two, they expanded outside of Japan and they brought in other filmmakers, other animation studios from around the world.
00:03:31
Speaker
So that was fun to see their perspectives on Star Wars. With season three of Visions, we're going back to pure anime, pure Japanese, and three of the stories that'll come in Star Wars Visions are actually follow-ups to earlier stories. So the duel,
00:03:50
Speaker
The Village Bride and The Ninth Jedi, three of my favorite shorts from the Vision series, are all getting sequels. And I'm really looking forward to that, especially looking forward to The Duel. That was probably my favorite one that really had the feel and the texture of a samurai movie.
00:04:07
Speaker
So I am really looking forward to that. ah By the way, So that is coming out October 29th. You can expect to see that, and that's the next thing. The Ninth Jedi, they're doing this story, but then they're also spinning that off into its own series that is coming sometime next year.
00:04:25
Speaker
So it will be a whole long-form Star Wars visions story ah where it's not just a short but it's a full season so that'll be cool to look forward to the other thing remember coming in the animation studios from the animation studios is mall shadow Lord that is the Darth Maul series and that will be coming in October, but not in October, sometime in 2026. I'm sorry. It's been a long day, folks. I'm getting my dates mixed up, but that's coming in 2026. So we've got the 9th Jedi series and Maul's Shadow Lord coming in 2026.

Mandalorian and Grogu movie discussion

00:05:03
Speaker
six Those are the next things on the docket. Now, coming after that in May of 26, or you know It'll probably be before those things come out, before those last two series come out.
00:05:15
Speaker
This is where the big money his this is. This the Mandalorian and Grogu theatrical release. It'll be the first Star Wars theatrical release in several years.
00:05:26
Speaker
I'm excited about this. I'm looking forward to it. I'm also coming into it, honestly, with a little bit of trepidation. I know the storyline has something to do with Jabba the Hutt's son, who I believe we saw as an infant in some of the earlier Clone Wars episodes.
00:05:46
Speaker
We also know that Jabba's son is going to be played by ah Jeremy Allen White from The Bear. I am still trying to get my arms around what that's going to be like and how that is going to come to fruition.
00:05:58
Speaker
But that's what we have looking forward to. One thing I am really looking forward to with that is seeing Sigourney Weaver as a as a New Republic fighter pilot.
00:06:10
Speaker
We know that because we've seen her in her jumpsuit and we know she is kind of the person who hires Mando to undertake this job that in some way is going to involve Jabba the Hutt's son.
00:06:23
Speaker
So let's cross our fingers and hope for the best. That's coming in May Memorial Day weekend.

Disney parks' Star Wars updates

00:06:30
Speaker
of 2026 so that will be here before we know it we also know at that time on the same day that that releases that over at Disneyland and at Walt Disney World the new mission for Millennium Falcon, Smuggler's Run, featuring the Mandalorian and Grogu, featuring the opportunity to choose what planet you go to, and featuring the engineer's ability to babysit Grogu is coming.
00:06:59
Speaker
And I know that all of that sounds absolutely ridiculous, but I'm really looking forward to it. So that's coming. Now, moving on with some news updates, particularly if I am your main source for Star Wars news, this will be new for you.
00:07:15
Speaker
The next film that is coming out is Star Wars Starfighter. This is coming in May of 2027, Memorial Day weekend of 2027. And by the way, I love Star Wars reclaiming Memorial Day week. It was fun.
00:07:31
Speaker
having Star Wars movies in December during the sequel days. But I don't know, there's something to me that says when May comes around and spring is coming around, it feels like it's time for a Star Wars movie. So I'm excited about that.
00:07:45
Speaker
Starfighter is the movie starring Ryan Gosling being directed by Shawn Levy. And here is the news that we got. We got casting confirmation on two actors who will be playing villainous roles.
00:08:00
Speaker
One of them is Mia Goth. I don't know her very well. I do know that her claim to fame is she starred as Maxine in the X movies. And this last X movie, which I think was X3, it was called Maxine, M-A-X-X-X.
00:08:21
Speaker
een which sounds like in any other genre, it would mean something completely different. ah But she was the star of that. That was her claim to fame. She is playing one of these villainous roles.
00:08:32
Speaker
This is one that Mikey Madison, who was in Enora and was absolutely delightful in Enora last year. it just absolutely fell in love with her. She was circling this part for some time.
00:08:45
Speaker
She ultimately passed on it. Word on the street was it was a contract issue. They weren't give her enough money. So good for Mikey, hold out. you know Bob Iger can't pay you more money.
00:08:57
Speaker
You should go for it. So that's great. Mia Goth is going to take that role. Here is the newer news, though, that I'm really excited about. The other villain role that was announced is going to be played by Matt Smith.
00:09:09
Speaker
Matt Smith came into our consciousness when he became Doctor Who. And we thought he was a great Doctor Who. He was really fun, really quirky.
00:09:21
Speaker
We also had the added benefit around the Gerard House of he reminded us of a male version of our old babysitter, Sophie. Sophie, if you listen to this, I will be surprised because now you're an yeah ah ER doc and you don't have time to listen to this. And I don't even know if you'd be interested, but let me tell you all, Matt and, and Sophie look like they could be twins separated at birth, but just really fun. So Matt Smith was Dr. Who probably my second favorite Dr. Who of the modern. No, going to say my, yeah, yeah I'm going to say second favorite Dr. Who of the modern era.
00:09:56
Speaker
Uh, Judy Gatwa, who has just left the role, also ranked up there. My favorite is Tenet, though, David Tenet, in case you were wondering. Anyway, Matt Smith is going to be one of these villain roles.
00:10:09
Speaker
You may know Matt Smith more recently. If you're used to him being Doctor Who and being fun and the Doctor and very positive, then check out House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones follow-up on HBO, where Matt Smith plays Daemon Targaryen.
00:10:26
Speaker
He is a I wouldn't call, he's an anti-hero, I think I would say on that show. um He is someone who, the best way to describe that character is no F's given, to put it blunt.
00:10:42
Speaker
ah He is his own man. He is looking for himself. And so I think he's going to bring a lot of interesting texture to this role as the bad guy in

Star Wars screenings and celebrations

00:10:53
Speaker
Starfighter.
00:10:53
Speaker
So we'll find out in a couple of years. Looking forward to that. Okay, so that's the news. Let me close out with a little bit of a fun Star Wars story.
00:11:05
Speaker
So here in Long Beach, California, we live in a condominium complex. And occasionally the community here will do some fun things and try to get together. And some of our neighbors have bought a projector and a big screen so that they can kind of do the at-home drive-in movie experience. And they've done a few of these for ah for the community, set up in kind of our central quad area ah between all of the apartment buildings, set up the camera and the or the projector and the screen and screened a movie. Well, you see where this is going.
00:11:43
Speaker
Just on last Saturday night, they did Star Wars, Episode IV, A New Hope. And so, you know, we were just coming from a Rams game, but I had to get home in order to see this and make it out there.
00:11:56
Speaker
I showed up. I was wearing Star Wars shirt. I had one of my Disney lightsabers that I built. I had a glass of wine in a Mandalorian goblet that I bought at Galaxy's Edge.
00:12:09
Speaker
And I was kind of the only big fan there. There was another gentleman who came out wearing a clone trooper, a clone trooper helmet. So that was fun. I wasn't completely alone, but we had fun with it. And let me tell you, it's just nothing like watching that movie.
00:12:28
Speaker
with a bunch of people. You know, being able to be with a crowd, to be able to cheer when all your heroes come on the screen, to boo when Darth Vader comes on the screen, to applaud wildly when the Death Star destroys, to laugh,
00:12:45
Speaker
at the funny moments. It's just great watching it in a community. I always love that experience. So we had a really good time. We had, I will tell you, we are probably some of the younger people and we're kind of old, but we're some of the younger people who live in this complex.
00:13:02
Speaker
ah Some of our neighbors were sitting in front of us and they must have been in their mid seventies. And afterwards the woman was like, oh, that was good. I'd never seen that before. was you've never seen Star Wars before? That's great. I've got 10 more movies to show you.
00:13:16
Speaker
So um we joked around that maybe we'll watch Empire Strikes Back next weekend. It probably won't happen next weekend, but it'll come sometime soon. That was really fun.
00:13:27
Speaker
And by the way, one last bit of Star Wars news as we come to a close in that regard. They did make an announcement this last week that in May of 27, probably, well, you know what, it's for May the 4th. So I think it's actually like the last weekend of April in 2027 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of A New Hope.
00:13:49
Speaker
It will be re-released in theaters. So you can bet we will be there. I would love nothing more than to see it at the Chinese Theater in Hollywood. My bet though is it's probably gonna be at the El Capitan across the street, which will still be wonderful, but it would sure be great to see it there at the at the Chinese where it all started.
00:14:09
Speaker
So anyway, that is the Star Wars story. That is the Star Wars news recap. And that is this episode of Short for a Stormtrooper. So thanks for joining us.
00:14:21
Speaker
Next week, we will have, well, actually for the next couple of weeks, we will have guests. We'll get back to that format. But in the meantime, please hit like, hit subscribe. You can even ring the bell i don't you know I don't know if there's a bell on any of our platforms. I'm just used to hearing that on YouTube. But anyway, follow us.
