Mason: What is up everybody this is Mason with the next guy up podcast I got Tinsley the Titan hater here i got Zach and we are ready to go we are ready we got some heated conversations that went on over the past couple days um that we're gonna get to so we're really excited about that boys how are we doing
Zack: e
Zack: Great.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Great. Ready to the roll.
Mason: I think I feel I
Zack: Mason's poking the bear here. I was...
Mason: I never would
Zack: So just a little bit. we We have a debate coming up. This is came out of a group text. We're in shout out to the next guy fan club. You know who you are. ah And if you, you know, if you want to join this group text, just let us know. Maybe we should make a group text for all of our listeners.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I would say the discord, but the, uh, The Discord is infiltrated by bots every waking moment of the day.
Zack: Who knew it was so hard to keep the Discord like just literally to only humans instead of robots.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: We get fake bots every day asking if we want to buy their picks.
Zack: but
Zack: ah Tens made some inflammatory comments about um one of the Titan greats, I will say.
Mason: Don't even get me started.
Zack: i i would have i would have let it go Tens wasn't making fun of the dead a little bit. um He was doing a little bit of slandering someone who is no longer with us.
Mason: bad look.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I didn' didn't say anything bad about i did not say anything bad about Steve McNair.
Zack: Uh, we're going to, we're going go back to their seats. It is. It's okay. You don't have to defend yourself.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I didn't.
Zack: We're coming.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I could have.
Zack: Um, uh, okay. we We'll get there. Um, you implied some things.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I implied that he's the greatest Titans quarterback ever.
Zack: Um,
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: That's what I said.
Zack: you said he accomplished a lot on and off the field. And I think, I think we all knew what that implied.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: work.
Zack: So, uh, that's coming.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: i
Zack: I'm here to defend Stephen. There's honor on this podcast. Uh, so we have a debate coming. That's just so you know, i think it's going to fun one. Um, and then we have some other stuff, right?
Zack: We have some, uh, yeah, that's, that was the main reason I was like, a guess I can't let him get away with this.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: ah forgot I said that honestly.
Zack: He could say anything he wants to do about Will Levis. He could, he could slander Marcus Marotta or Vince Young. Listen, I, but I got a ride for my guy.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Sometimes I take shots and oh you know I don't really think about everything I'm saying. thought maybe that one would ah just go unnoticed, I bet.
Zack: So immediately I sprung to action and I challenged Tins to a debate on the topic that he presented. ah He made some comments that I feel like were in error.
Zack: um Tins has been trying to provoke us for many months now. And so we're taking him up on it finally. And so I think it's gonna be a fun little talk today. We also have college football. Week zero is upon us, folks.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yes, week zero.
Mason: That silence that's silent and says a lot.
Zack: Happy college football.
Mason: I wish they would do more.
Zack: Yeah, week week week zero is kind of mid, but um we have we have some games this week. And then week one is ah is merely two weeks away. So we have the um we have three of our – we're down to our final six SEC teams to to cover over-unders for. So we have three of them today, our eight-and-a-half win over-under teams, including your Tennessee Volunteers.
Zack: And then we are going to talk a little NFL. Mason has some ah has some tales to tell us, apparently.
Mason: Yes. Yeah.
Zack: yeah Story time with Mason.
Mason: Story time with Mason. Story time with Mason. Yeah.
Zack: um Michigan.
Zack: Some might say getting away with murder.
Mason: Fun stuff.
Zack: ah work Yeah, we'll get there.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Quite literally.
Zack: Maybe not literally, but getting away cheating. Yes, for sure.
Zack: They might have murdered someone. Wouldn't surprise me.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: It's essentially a commandment. It's in there. No cheating.
Zack: yeah it's true.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: No murdering. They're all the same. They're all treated the same.
Zack: I think it's, yeah. So well we we we're going to break that down a little bit. Some funny thoughts came out of it.
Zack: Just the Michigan name, just truly letting them get away with whatever they want.
Zack: Okay, where do we want to start today, boys? do Do we want to start with Mason's story time, maybe?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah, let's but that's a good
Zack: you to Get us into the episode a little bit?
Mason: Is that what we want to do? Okay, yeah.
Zack: i can i kind of want it.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: good boy
Mason: So I've had a heck of a week, boys. And they don't even know They know a little bit of it, but they don't know all of the whats what has happened.
Zack: Okay.
Mason: Sometimes I feel like my life is a movie and not a funny one either. Maybe funny to you guys. But this is how it all started. so ah And I'm telling every detail for a reason. You're probably like, why is he telling me this?
Mason: So Sunday, me and my wife go grocery shopping.
Zack: Hmm.
Mason: And we pick up a bunch of items, you know, go to a bunch of other places. And then Monday, my wife is off of work. So Tuesday, she calls me in the morning and said, Mason, it smells so bad in my car.
Zack: Hmm.
Mason: I think something crawled up in the engine and died. i was like, oh, there must have been like a rat or something. So I grabbed a pair of kitchen tongs because I was expecting to like pull something out of the engine and some Febreze.
Zack: Nice.
Mason: I didn't have enough time in the morning, so I go on my lunch break. I open up the door, and this smell... I'm not kidding, guys. Worst smell I've ever smelled in my life, and I almost threw up.
Mason: and And I was like, this is too strong to be like in the engine or like in the front of... This smells like it's in the vehicle.
Zack: Yeah.
Mason: I was like, let me do a clean sweep. So I like had to hold my nose. It was that bad. ah Check the front row. Check the you know the back the back row, and then... I opened up the hatch and there was a sweatshirt sitting there and I pulled the sweatshirt and there is two large cases of raw chicken, like $20 worth sitting there.
Zack: Hmm.
Mason: Uh, jump back to the story. We took the dogs on a walk and smart me for some reason was like, I don't want the sun to be beaming down on the chicken. So I'm just going to throw my sweatshirt over it.
Mason: And when I was unloading all the groceries, I clearly forgot the chicken. Well, people are like,
Zack: Wait, you didn't unload the chicken right away? You decided to leave it in the car during the walk?
Mason: I didn't decide to. Oh, no, we were we were at the park. We were not at home.
Zack: Hmm. Hmm.
Mason: Yeah, we were at the park. We went to Can Creek. So we took the dogs. Took Thanos. Anyways, so it smelled so bad.
Zack: Hmm.
Mason: ah I almost did not, we could not get the smell out of the, I had to go to Walmart, bought $15, so $20 a hole on chicken, raw chicken. Now you're wondering, what Mason, why didn't you notice it? Well, we we had other things planned that was not the chicken until Wednesday, which is the, day which was the day, the day before we discovered the chicken.
Mason: So, bought $15 worth of just fragrant stuff that didn't know what I was doing, so it just like added the smell on top of, the the the chicken. So I think I sent in the group text. and I think it was Tins that said, well, you're going to sell the car.
Mason: and Was that you?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: yeah
Mason: And I almost thought we would have had to. ah A co-worker said buy oseum spray. and like spray that in there. And well, anyways, so and this is important part of the story.
Zack: Hmm.
Mason: So Tuesday night, turn the key over to roll the windows down. Why are you telling me this? You're about to find out. Spray the Oseum spray, everything. Wednesday morning, Jalen wakes me up and says, hey, my car battery is dead. Because I left the car, the key turned over.
Zack: Hmm.
Mason: So I had to take her to work. Because ah I was afraid that if we jumped it off, which she was already running late, but if I jumped off the car and then tried to take like her, she tried to take the car.
Mason: And what happens if the car stuck there? Like it was on like, you know I'm saying? Like I didn't know the battery situation. Like I didn't know if I was able to just jumpstart. I didn't know if it was a dead battery from now on. Like I didn't know. so I was like, so I took her to work.
Mason: had to pick her back up. It was a good thing that that all of that transpired because I actually was, since I was waiting on her, I wouldn't pick up Pokemon cards. So that was that was the best part of the whole thing.
Zack: Wow. What a win.
Mason: Got some hits, like a $40 card and a $50 card.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: You did.
Mason: But anyways...
Zack: Pay for that chicken.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: It's also a good thing you ah you live really close to town, like where you guys work too.
Mason: but anyway
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: like It's not a really big detour.
Mason: Yeah, it's yeah, it would it was like 15 minutes from work. Is that what you're saying? I'm confused.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah, I feel like you let you live really... I mean, you're 30 minutes from my house.
Mason: ah
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: That's not long it takes me to get to your house.
Mason: Yeah, yeah. So we had that go on, you know, it was a whole like
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: This guy.
Mason: It was a whole issue. And then yesterday I'm standing on the pool deck and all that all of a sudden, just like I look down, I'm being stung insane amount of times by hornets everywhere.
Mason: To a point where I just jump in the pool.
Zack: Wow.
Mason: I had like five, like my ankle is like a tennis ball right now, like swollen up. So I was just spraying some. ah Have you guys ever had to like spray a hornet's nest or anything like that? Because ah I was spraying it and they just start running towards you usually, flying towards you.
Mason: But that's that's been my week so far. So I'm the struggle bus just a tad.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Wow. Sounds like you've you've you used up all your luck on those Pokemon cards and now you're just cooked.
Mason: ah That's exactly what happened. Because I ripped another box today and got nothing but hot garbage.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: You got nothing.
Mason: Yeah.
Zack: one time we went grocery shopping and I completely forgot all of the groceries in the car for like four hours.
Mason: So that's...
Zack: It may have been longer than that.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: What is
Zack: Like I was just like, where are the groceries? And then I just like, it was one of those things where you're just like doing something else. And then it just dawns on you where like i was doing something random and all of a sudden I was like, Holy cow.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: I never got those groceries out. And it was like a dangerous amount of time later, but I was like, you know, it's probably fine. and think There's like milk in there and there's some stuff that's like, that's been a long time for milk.
Zack: No, it was fine though.
Mason: did you drink it did you eat well his his stomach's like a machine so it just tensley leave anything in the car
Zack: It was fine.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: You're still alive.
Zack: Yes, definitely.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah, he's fine.
Zack: It's fine, guys. It was like a whole grocery.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Uh, no, I've no, never done anything like that.
Zack: He's a professional.
Mason: I mean, I got 31 years like without having to do it like without doing anything like this, but it had to be chicken. I couldn't have left just like...
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: right. Zero, zero through 18. You don't, you don't get to claim those as life experience.
Mason: Good point, actually.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I don't think seven year old Mason is in charge to make sure the groceries get put up from the car.
Mason: You don't know what I'm in charge of. ah Why couldn't I just left like a box of pasta or something? It had to be the chicken, but that was... And it was like stuck in my nose too. Like I've never understood that until... Like I was in Walmart and I was still smelling it.
Mason: I was like, is it on me? Like it was... oh
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: the
Mason: So the person, the MVP of the whole thing is Jalen for driving to work with that smell.
Zack: pretty tough.
Mason: Cause it was, yeah, rough.
Zack: Hmm.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah, I would have been taking the spark.
Mason: So there
Zack: Yeah, a definite I would
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: like Sorry, you did this.
Mason: you did this. Yeah.
Zack: That is exactly what I was to say. i was like, I would definitely be driving the car with the smell and those windows would not be rolled up for like two weeks straight. I would just be like, and let we're going to we're going to let it air out.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: she
Mason: So that, no yeah, that sprays like worked like, ah like there's a process to it. You spray it in there and you lock it in there. And then after that, and it's like dangerous to, butt like you're not like, it's some type of chemical compound.
Zack: Oh.
Zack: It's like serious.
Mason: Yeah. Some type of chemical compound that eliminates the smell. So tax it.
Zack: It like attacks the smell.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Sounds like it's dangerous and could mutate you and turn you into like a superhero.
Mason: Yeah.
Mason: Well, let's find, wolf yeah, we'll find out.
Zack: Could be fun.
Mason: OZM guy here. have ah I don't know what my powers would be, but we'll figure that out. Anyways, that is my story for this story time with Mason.
Mason: Thank you. Thank you.
Zack: um like that. Thank you, Mason.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Wow.
Zack: ah Electric content.
Mason: Send us your stories of leaving groceries in the car. I would love to hear them. We'll read them on the pod.
Zack: We will.
Mason: I had a co-worker that potato rolled under the seat and you know it has the like roots, the tentacle things that kind of come out.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Mason: It like grew into the floorboard.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: That's awesome.
Mason: So that was a nice little story.
Zack: That's pretty cool.
Mason: That is cool. It was part, it was part of the car now.
Mason: All right, there we go. Something little fun just to throw out before we go at each other's throats here in a minute.
Zack: Right word?
Mason: Some debate. Okay.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Great. What a segue.
Zack: Okay. I think it's debate time. Um, so I don't We don't have to do like a formal topic here. Um, I don't think we need like a formal back and forth. I would tell you, I really considered inviting my dad onto this pod and surprising things with it and letting him moderate it.
Zack: Um, he's a judge for anyone who doesn't know. Uh, it would have been fun cause he's Titans fan as well. And, um, he would not, he's not going take kindly to these, uh, Steve McNair remarks from tens.
Zack: Um, so let's, let's just read the full tweet. and or another tweet Sorry, it was a text.
Mason: text message.
Zack: Yeah, it was a text. This was unprovoked. This was simply in response to some Trevor Lawrence discourse. um He said, this is talking about Trevor Lawrence.
Zack: He's accomplished more in his four seasons than any Tennessee Titans quarterback not named Steve McNair who accomplished a lot on and off the field.
Zack: Hmm.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah, that last line wasn't needed.
Zack: So, like I said, tendon he's he's been trying to get get it under our skin for a while. He's talked a lot of Titans trash. You know, I don't have a lot.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I've talked a Mason and Josh not wanting Cam Ward trash,
Zack: You have. You have. um talk you've You've poked a lot of fun at our our coaching situation, which is not good.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: which they didn't.
Zack: um But I finally felt like I had something I could actually argue against, which is why I've ah i've chosen this one because I feel like I've got a ah pretty decent argument here.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah. Yeah.
Zack: um
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: set myself up there.
Zack: So he's accomplished more in his four seasons than any Tennessee Titans quarterback not named Steve McNair. So that is the basic ah basis of our argument. i Mason and I are going to be trying to disprove ah that statement.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Right.
Zack: Tins, do you have any you want do you want to opening opening remarks? Do you want us to do opening remarks? where how do you How do you feel?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Um, I think I would like to, uh, apologize for the off the field comments. That wasn't great.
Zack: Wow.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Um, yeah, that wasn't great. You know, I saw the, the commercial or the preview for Stephen Nair's documentary coming out on Netflix. It was fresh on my mind.
Zack: Okay.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Um, so yeah, but that was an unprovoked shot that didn't need to be taken. think we all know what I'm referring to
Mason: Was he referring to Zach?
Zack: No, we're not talking about it.
Mason: I don't
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I mean, I could get us a good clip right now.
Zack: no we're not talking about it
Mason: know.
Zack: He's a legend.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: But, yeah, Steve McNair, legend.
Mason: Thank you.
Zack: This is not about Stephen McNair.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: But, yeah, no. No, this is not. Because, he i like I said, he is the best Titans quarterback that you guys ever had.
Zack: This is about us honoring his legacy.
Zack: That's true.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: And my comment was that Trevor is better than any other quarterback the Titans have had outside of him.
Zack: Okay.
Zack: Okay. Okay.
Zack: So you have any other thoughts?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: That is the premise of this contract or this debate.
Zack: That's all we're doing.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: That's all we're doing.
Zack: Yeah, we're not talking contracts.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: We're not talking about anything else.
Zack: We're not talking. it's just.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: We're talking about Trevor Lawrence versus Jake Locker, Kerry Collins, Marcus Mariota, Zapp Mettenberger.
Zack: Not Jack.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Those guys.
Mason: Finch Young.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Vince Young.
Zack: Yep, yep, yep.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: You know, because there is a quarterback you guys are about to throw at me. And all I would like to say he was drafted by the Dolphins and played there longer.
Zack: Will Levis.
Zack: What
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: So, you know, if he was going the Hall of Fame, he'd go in as a Dolphin. So is he a Titans quarterback? Who's to say? I don't know.
Zack: are you actually going as a dolphin?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Who's to say? You don't know.
Zack: I'm to say, I'm here to say, um okay. So my basis and my argument, I will tell you, I think there's two ways I can go about this. i think I think both are good enough to win this debate.
Zack: I think there's there's just there's a storyline. There is a story of Tannehill coming in and reinvigorating a team who was on the brink of the season falling apart, who led his team, who was two and four when he took the reins of the starting job, led them to an AFC championship game where they were just ah like a touchdown away from going to the Super Bowl.
Zack: start.
Zack: I think that alone, I'm not sure ten i'm not sure Trevor Lawrence has done anything to even compete with just that.
Mason: Thank you.
Zack: One comeback player of the year that season in 2019. um But also, he owns essentially every single other stat. I only i only even pulled four years for Tannehill, just so you know, Tins.
Zack: And I pulled four seasons, 2019 to compared to Trevor Lawrence's four seasons. I'll say they played a very similar number of games because Tannehill got injured his last season as well. Tannehill played 57 games for the Titans and Lawrence has played 60 games for the Jags so far.
Zack: So, do you want to talk about stats? you want to talk about? Where do you want to go with this?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I would like to go with Who had the better team? Who had the better situation that they went into?
Zack: Okay. mean, I just said we were 2-4 when he took over the team.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Ryan Tannehill went to a team. Yeah, but that was following a playoff team.
Zack: That's not true. That was in 2017.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Marcus Mariota had led the Tennessee Titans to a playoff wildcard spot, almost beating the Chiefs. Caught his own touchdown pass in a playoff game.
Mason: Crazy.
Zack: 2018,
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Ryan Tannehill comes in the next year. Things aren't going well.
Zack: they not the playoffs.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Okay.
Zack: twenty eighteen and they did not make the playoffs
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: So 2018, they were bad. That's why they traded for Ryan Tannehill. Right. Okay.
Zack: We replaced third in the AFC South, nine and seven.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah. That's wow. Not in seven was third.
Zack: I know that's something.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: That's back when the division meant something.
Mason: crazy
Zack: That was variables first season.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: um
Mason: For abes.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Rapes. Wow. Speaking of rapes, what a, what a great head coach.
Mason: No, you're changing the subject.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Um,
Zack: Talk about him. Now talk about it. Let him cook, Mason.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: No, um' I'm talking – this is what I'm saying.
Zack: Let him cook.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: The the Titans organization was – they finished third that year. They get Tannehill as a backup quarterback.
Zack: Okay.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: He was supposed to be a backup quarterback. The Dolphins were moving on, moving on from Tannehill.
Zack: Okay.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: He had lot of experience, played for a long time.
Zack: Yep.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Marcus Mariota, the wheels are falling off. They decided to turn to Ryan Tannehill. This is a team with Derek Henry. Jarrell Casey on defense is a pro bowler. Former all-pro left tackle, Juwan Taylor.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: The whole offensive line was good. You had ah the guy who plays ah Conklin, Jeremy Conklin. think that's what his name is. Delaney Walker, Jared Cook, A.J. Brown is around.
Zack: Never heard of him.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Ever heard of him? I mean, we're we're acting like this is a ah Ryan Tannehill who got drafted to the number one first overall team with a terrible head coach, first-time head coach named Urban Meyer.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Wow, that'd be really hard to have for your rookie season.
Zack: Mm-hmm.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Throwing to absolute no ones.
Zack: Mm-hmm. Okay.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Ryan Tannehill was a seasoned vet coming into a good situation with a great head coach. And yeah, he thrived in that. You would expect him to. I would expect if things went bad for Trevor this year and we traded him to a competent organization that he would flourish because he if things were put well around him instead of the way it's been so far.
Mason: Thank you.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: His rookie year, his top receivers are Tavon Austin. You guys know who Tavon Austin is? He wasn't in the league the year before. He signed on the Jaguars team because Urban Meyer said, Tavon Austin, he was really good in college.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Let's go get him. Laquarius Treadwell, do you guys know who that is? No, you don't. He was out of the league the very next year. Jack Ward, one of the Trevor Lawrence's number one receivers for his rookie year.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Did things get better? Yes. Doug Peterson comes in the next year. That was supposed to be a launching point. His second year was his best year so far in a competent system around him.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Things fell apart. Injuries started piling up. It is what it is.
Zack: Hmm. Okay, let's say let me say a couple things.
Mason: Thank you.
Zack: I'll say first. Titans had made the playoffs one time between 2009 and 2018.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: hmm. Yeah.
Zack: One time in the entire stretch.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: yeah
Zack: Tannehill came in. think an argument that when you talk about who did more for the organization, that he came into a system that had a very good team around him and he took them to the next level that would not have happened if he had not been placed into that role.
Zack: Without him, There may be a fringe wildcard team and said that the number one overall seed ah the next season, they go to three straight playoffs, 2019, 2020, 2021.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yes.
Zack: They win two playoff games in that stretch, which I mean, he lost, they lost a couple of very tight ones, but he did make the AFC championship game as first.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: same and it's like four those one
Zack: um And he really, I mean, did some things there that no one else could have done. um I want to talk about a couple of things because you talked about the offensive line tens.
Zack: If that tracks in, in all of their games, ah who would you say got sacked more? Who had more sacks against them in that stretch?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I don't know. I guess you'd say Ryan Tannehill.
Zack: I'm going to tell you, Santa Hill took 135 sacks compared to only 112 for Trevor Lawrence and the same number of games.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: How many games did Ryan Tannehill miss due to injury in his force? Like, did you match up? Is it game for game? is that what we're talking about?
Zack: it's
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: You said you did the mapped out.
Zack: It's 57 games for Tannehill, 60 games for Trevor Lawrence.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Okay. Well, that's a tough stat.
Zack: Straight up. um only I only pick um only pick four seasons for Tannehill.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: It's a tough stat.
Zack: I will tell you that Tannehill's record over that span was thirty six and nineteen Trevor Lawrence's record, twenty two and thirty eight I'll tell you Tannehill threw 89 touchdowns compared to Lawrence's 69.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: sotat
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: 22. Yep.
Zack: I'll tell you that Tannehill only threw 33 interceptions compared to 46 for Trevor Lawrence.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Guys, gunslinger. What can I say? Um,
Zack: So I will tell you also, Trevor Lawrence does lead in one category that I pulled. I'm just going to, in transparency, he threw for about five more yards per game. 230 compared to 225. So shout out to But,
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Mm-hmm.
Zack: so shout out to him
Mason: Thank you.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Shout out. Mm-hmm.
Zack: but Completion percentage higher for Tannehill 66 compared to 63 yards per attempt, almost eight compared to almost seven ah QBR average over the four seasons. if we're talking about just quarterback play here, the average over four seasons for Tannehill was 62.45 and for Trevor Lawrence was 52.7, almost 10 points different.
Zack: Do you have any thoughts about any of those stats?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: No, those all check out for a guy playing on a bottom tier roster for four years.
Zack: Yeah.
Zack: Okay. Okay.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: You look at all the coaches' polls all the time.
Zack: A bottom tier roster.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: The Jaguars roster, let me put it this way. Do we ever get compensation picks? No, because when our guys leave for free agency, who goes and signs them? Who's signing free agent Jaguar players?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: No one. We have a bad roster. It's very bad.
Zack: Hmm.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Our defense the last two years, look look at that stat for me. Where's the Titans defense during Ryan Tannehill's years ranked compared to the Jaguars defense
Zack: and know I wasn't thinking about the defenses because I was looking at quarterback play, not how good the teams were.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: career? Right. Because the Titans have an all-around team.
Zack: Not sure how your defensive performance affects your quarterback play.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: no you'll You'll see. Watch. When a team is...
Zack: It affects wins. It doesn't affect anything else. I don't know.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: but that
Zack: why
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: we're accomplishing things. It's wins. Quarterbacks get judged on wins and losses.
Zack: But I gave you many other stats that had nothing to do with team stats.
Mason: he gave them He gave you like 10 other stats.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: and Tannehill had way better so way better stats. He also had a running back behind him called Derek Henry who he could hand the ball off to and take pressure off of him.
Zack: Oh, of course. Mm-hmm.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: If you can't run the ball, if you cannot run the ball in this league, you cannot be successful. If every team is not scared of you running the ball, they're going to drop everyone back in coverage. They're going to blitz you and sack you because they just know
Zack: Mm-hmm.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: You either beat me deep on a um to pass or we're going to get a sack because we know that we're not scared of your running game. <unk>ant or ah trevor Travis Etienne has not been some elite running back for us. We're not one of the top leading teams in rushing.
Zack: Okay. Mason, I sent you a text the other day. Can can we can we read that back?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I think a Hall of Fame running back helps when you have a quarterback.
Zack: Read that text, Mason.
Mason: The one you sent me directly. Okay.
Zack: Yes.
Mason: Pulling it up.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Good timing here.
Mason: It says. Sent you a doc. Oh wait. Not that one.
Zack: Oh my gosh.
Mason: Putting this on record for when it happens on the pod. The only argument Tens will have against me is that Tannehill was a Derrick Henry merchant on in quotations.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I'm not saying he's a Derrick Henry merchant.
Mason: um And he wouldn't have been as good without an elite running back.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: It helps.
Zack: oh
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: It legitimately helps. if you can if if ah ah If a defense knows, okay, we can't just sell out to the pass because they have a guy who can literally beat us from everywhere on the field in Derrick Henry, we have to play good defense all around.
Mason: right.
Zack: True.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: We can't sell out to one thing.
Zack: That's true.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Travis Etienne is not striking fear in anyone's hearts. Our run game has been bottom tier Trevor's whole career. Okay.
Zack: Look, no one here is arguing that that that Trevor Lawrence isn't isn't a good talent, that he he has the potential to be an elite quarterback.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Right. hmm.
Zack: All we're focusing on here is the importance that you played and what you've accomplished in the four seasons.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: right
Zack: And I'm just saying that Marcus Mariota was quarterback. The Titans were a very mediocre team, very middle of the road, lost a lot of games. They plugged him in, and all of a sudden, the team was elevated.
Zack: you you have a You have a very distinct line, especially that 2019 season. It doesn't matter what the roster looked like. It matters what it had what it looked like before Tannehill versus after Tannehill. What was the Tannehill effect? what What made him win comeback player of the year?
Zack: It was that he plugged in, and all of a sudden, the team went from bottom of two and four on the trajectory to missing the playoffs to a team that went on to make the AFC championship game, and nearly a Super Bowl.
Zack: That's my argument.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Right. No, it's – Tannehill, yes. When I said this comment, I didn't look into it at all. Tannehill did accomplish more.
Zack: and
Mason: but
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: He's won more playoff games. But my argument is he is a – he was what, a ah five to almost seven-year vet when he became Titans starting quarterback?
Zack: Yeah. True.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: He's a seasoned quarterback.
Mason: But his his career was in the tank.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: He's entering –
Mason: He was a backup going into the tight end. You say seasoned veteran, but...
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: A lot of that was injuries. He like tore his ACL. That was a part of why he was a comeback player there. He tore his ACL. They were bad. The dolphins had a high draft pick. They decided the role was drafting a rookie quarterback.
Mason: But you say seasoned veteran, but then you're saying he also had all these injuries and didn't play a whole lot.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Okay.
Mason: I do want to know how many games played with.
Zack: Very similar to Kirk Cousins trajectory, I think.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I'm saying that's what Kirk Cousins, lot of these guys that like get labeled as washed up and they go to a a different team and revive their careers.
Zack: He's very Kirk Cousins, yeah.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: That's what Tannehill did. He was like the first one to do it.
Mason: But I will say, okay, you you don't want us to compare seasoned veteran Ryan Tannehill to ah Trevor Lawrence's first four seasons.
Zack: Yep.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I'm
Mason: But then you're wanting to compare Cam Ward, which is a rookie, to Trevor Lawrence, which I'm getting off topic, but that was also happened in the group text.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: all I said.
Zack: Mason, you're off. You're off.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Well, yeah, all I said was make an interception.
Zack: Get back
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: That's all I wanted to do.
Zack: you Don't break damn water in this conversation. um
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: Okay, Mason, do you have any any thoughts on this?
Mason: This was the easiest debate I've ever had to do in my life.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah. this
Mason: zag just but Zach just had to take take the reins on it.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yes.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Listen, as soon as.
Mason: and it was it was a win right from the jump.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Right.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Right. As soon as Zach said this was an official debate, i I just started poking around on some information and I quickly realized that I wasn't going to win this. Ryan Tannehill did have a better Titans career than Trevor has had so far as a Jaguar.
Zack: Thank you.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: My only standing is Ryan Tannehill, experienced player, entering a very good team.
Zack: True.
Zack: True. It was a very good team.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Very good team.
Zack: With a competent quarterback, it was a very good team.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Derek Henry.
Zack: yeah
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Exactly.
Mason: can Can I just say something real quick?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Very good coaching staff.
Mason: I think the audience needs more of this that is not argument between the two bottom ah NFL teams. and like Zach has an Excel sheet with like all like all these stats, and he just like dug in math mr Dr. Math over here.
Mason: So I just, for future, I like i like this i like this debate here.
Zack: Thank you.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: and knew and knew that I knew that was coming. I knew what was coming for me. Yeah.
Mason: and And can I say one thing? Cause Zach said everything else.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Mason: um ah I do want to commend Tinsley ever since Trevor Lawrence was drafted. ah So my time with Will Levis and all these other quarterbacks that we mentioned, I have straight up disowned them, talked trash about them, been frustrated about them.
Mason: He has been – wish that I had somebody back me up like Tinsley backs up Trevor Lawrence. He is the golden boy with the golden locks that Tinsley never sees does anything wrong.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: i've
Zack: Mm.
Mason: And he'll blame it on the receivers.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: i've I've long...
Mason: He'll blame it on injury. He'll blame it on anything else. He'll blame it on that offensive line.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Okay.
Mason: Anything but the court. No, I'm just saying, is that not true? Look at the text messages. It's true.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: So i will I will leave you with this. i will say what the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, who has now turned into the quarterback whisperer around the league, says...
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: franchises and organizations fail quarterbacks more than quarterbacks fail franchises. When you bring in quarterbacks and put the weight of the world on their shoulders and don't build the team around them like you're supposed to,
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: that that is you failing the quarterback. And so up to this point, the Jaguar, the, the, the marginal success we've had with Trevor, which is two winning seasons going nine and eight when the division wants winning a playoff game, um, only one less playoff win than Ryan Tannehill.
Zack: Yeah.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Almost as, almost as many as Blake Bortles. Um, but anyway, that's not the point. Uh, is I threw myself off. It's him playing hero ball.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Quite literally, we we we had a stretch where we had to win like six of our last seven games the year we went to the playoffs.
Zack: yeah
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: and also so If you go back and look at those games, it was just Trevor Lawrence, hero ball. It worked. We got hot at the right time. And then the following season when we were playing well, competing for a one seed, and then he got hurt in that Bengals Monday night game.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: It was him dragging a bad team to where they were. i
Mason: okay so So let me ask you this.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: So that's that's why I think that we as an organization, that's why I put all the blame on Trent Bulkey and Doug Peterson and Urban Meyer and our bad roster, our very bad roster. I mean, our roster has been bottom tier for a long time.
Mason: Can you go on record and say they they got rid of the GM that you that you want to get rid of?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yep.
Mason: They got you the coach that one of the coaches that you wanted. He was in the top three.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: It's three. No, no, no. So I'm saying –
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: This season, first year in the new system.
Mason: Can you go on record and finally say because ah you're...
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yes, I've been preparing this statement.
Mason: you're
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I've been preparing to say this, but if we don't get where we're supposed to be, if we're not consistently competing to win a to win division, but being one of those top four teams in the AFC, AFC is loaded.
Zack: Hmm.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I know this. We got Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow in this conference. It's it's loaded.
Zack: Same word.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Cam Moore. Yeah.
Mason: Can't forget Cam.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: ah Yeah. I forgot about. Yeah. Yeah. um If we, if, if we cannot be, so I think Liam Cohen's the guy. i love our new GM. If we cannot be consistently doing that by the time, let's see what, this is the 2025 season. If by 2020 at the end of the 2027 season, if we're still just doing this, then I'll just have to say,
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Trevor's not it. And that's when his contract comes to the point where we either cut him or extend him to make it to where we're not having to pay him $70 million, dollars which is why his inflated thing for the Fox graphics is 55 million years because he has two years where it's over 60.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: And when you average it out, you know, I know that's hard for people. The reading comprehension on that's really hard.
Zack: Oh, boy.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: um
Zack: We said we we say were talking about contracts.
Mason: Yes, this guy.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: But that's what that's from.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: But yes, so at the end of the 2027 season, if we are still garbage, then I will be ready to probably DJ Lagway.
Zack: Hmm.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: He'll be out by then.
Zack: i will I will say to 10's credit, and like I said, he's always rode with his guy.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Somebody.
Zack: And I do think that in the last couple of years especially, there has been a lot of case studies in quarterbacks who get thrown into starting roles really early on pretty bad teams.
Zack: And they struggle. um i mean, Bryce Young was is the most recent, but also like Baker Mayfield of it all, starting the Cleveland Browns and just everyone kind of looking like he's a bust. then all of a sudden goes to Tampa Bay and he becomes – a great quarterback there.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Well, first Baker goes to the Rams um and gets coached up there by a young assistant named Liam Cohen and then goes to the Bucks.
Zack: Sorry. I missed that.
Zack: Okay. Gotcha. Liam Cohen. He's the quarterback. Whisperer says tens.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: He might be the key. He might be the key.
Zack: So he could be, um but we've seen a couple of quarterbacks who's taken some big steps and jumped into some bigger roles. So, ah when Once they have some new coaching, some new talent around them. So who knows? I think there is definitely potential for that.
Zack: Most quarterbacks don't just jump in the league and they're just because most really elite quarterbacks don't jump in on good teams. This is kind of the reality. um
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I
Zack: But ah most don't stick around as long as Trevor Lawrence has stuck around at the Jags. And so I think there's certainly potential.
Zack: Be fun year. Could be heartbreaking.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: and need it.
Zack: Who's to say?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: My phone could get deactivated.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Things go certain ways.
Zack: Tid's just giving receipts out overflowing.
Mason: Thank you.
Zack: Just thousands of receipts. um If something goes poorly for the Jags this year. Okay. We always say we're going to do less Jags Titans talk, and here we are.
Mason: And then we do more.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah, we're never going to do less.
Mason: it's It's the agitating group text that we get that get us fired up. That's what it is. but I'm just sitting at work on a Wednesday morning and I get blown up about the Titans going to laser tag.
Zack: Yeah.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: what what what it What do you got? Listen, all I do is I share what the Titans are doing, and then i could it's as simple as that. I will send the Titans went to go do laser tag the night before, and then Kyle will respond with, Trevor Lawrence is the second biggest bust since Jamar Russell.
Zack: me
Mason: Oh, no.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: You know, just something crazy.
Zack: yeah And then Tins will say ah Steve McNair had some problems on and off the field. Whatever. ah You know, the conversations get derailed pretty quick.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: He accomplished a lot.
Zack: So, um okay. Football's almost back, guys.
Mason: Not with me.
Zack: We're almost back. I wouldn't talk about reallfs real football. So we're very close.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Oh, we're so close. I'm going in Jacksonville in like 17 days.
Zack: Electric.
Mason: right.
Zack: We'll see you some we see some ah content live on the field. Or in the stadium, at least.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Macy's going to bring a sign. We're to try to get Trevor to give her something.
Zack: Nice.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: use the little kid
Zack: Can you let him hear recording of the podcast?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: ah might I might float it to him. I got some stickers. I'm hey, man, check this out.
Zack: Can you get behind the bench and just like gets to get a loudspeaker and just play it?
Zack: As loud as you can.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Do a cut up of all the Titans Jacks and arguments.
Zack: yeah
Zack: Here, Trevor, we're comparing you to Ryan Tannehill in 2019.
Zack: Okay. So we do have some more actual football talk for you today. um Now that our time is getting way out of hand.
Zack: We're going to move quickly here because I do want to get, but I went in the, we would just skip it, but we only have two weeks left to cover the rest of the SEC teams over-unders. um College football is is very quickly coming. We have two weeks until kickoff for the the all of the teams, week one official.
Zack: And so um I've got three more teams. We're going to go quickly through this, and you guys can help give me some of your opinions. Three teams with eight and a half over under wins. We're at our final six teams in the SEC. These are projected to win the most games according to the odds market.
Zack: And so today we're covering Tennessee, who you could fairly say are schedule merchants this year, ah where you're covering and Tennessee, Ole Miss, and LSU.
Zack: So right they did.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Tennessee and just named their starting quarterback 14 minutes ago.
Zack: i was going to say that. I just got the notification during this recording, Joey Aguilar officially named starting quarterback. Let's go ahead and talk some Tennessee while we're here because I do unfortunately feel like ah Tennessee is a little bit outside of this conversation probably.
Zack: um Tennessee, if you look at their schedule, it is the schedule is probably the easiest in the SEC. ah I don't even know if that's like debatable. ah Tennessee, Missouri are kind of a toss up for who has the easiest schedule.
Zack: um And so that that's Tennessee's only real like thing to hang their hat on this year. ah Tennessee also, I will say i'll say that, but um their their defense has a lot returning at a very elite defense last year. That was the reason they made the playoff.
Zack: Obviously had some... Issues, Nico Iamaliava transfers to UCLA unexpectedly, ah leaving a gap at quarterback in what was going to be one of our surest positions.
Zack: Joey Aguilar just named the starting quarterback who used to be at UCLA and previously was at Appalachian State before that. He has basically not played in a full year, though, and he's learning a brand new system that is famously pretty complicated, in Josh Heupel's quarterback system.
Zack: just a lot to It's moving fast. um Let's do a quick. So non-conference is is actually pretty uneventful here. I think that they tried to schedule an interesting non-conference game in Atlanta against Syracuse as the first game of the season.
Zack: The Syracuse team was pretty good last year, is much less good this year from what I've heard. um I think Syracuse head does not does have a lot of returning and could be pretty bad. In fact, ah the rest of the non-conference is ETSU, UAB, and North New Mexico State University.
Zack: So if we count all four of those as wins, you can get into the regular. So the over-under is eight and a half, so you've got to nine wins to go over.
Zack: um They also See this is where it gets tricky Because they also have the benefit of playing Literally all four of the bottom Four rated SEC teams They play Mississippi State On the road We host Arkansas host or You're going to Kentucky And hosting Vanderbilt So let's call all four of those As wins as well Just for fun You're at eight wins so far So let's talk about the rest of the schedule then.
Zack: um You've got four games. You just need to win one to go over. You're hosting Georgia early. You're going to Alabama. You're hosting Oklahoma.
Zack: And you're going to the Swamp in Florida where they haven't won 20 years.
Zack: Yeah, this was tricky for me. um I mean, I think any Tennessee fan would tell you that's kind of that that's kind of the calculus there. ah You want to get to nine wins, you win one of those games, you want to make a playoff, you got to win two of the games.
Zack: Are they winning two of those games?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: I'm going to say probably not.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: Best hope is that Florida has fallen off the rails at that point and Lagway is like not playing well or he's not been playing at all because he's injured or...
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Right.
Zack: um they've lost a bunch cause they have a tough schedule and and they're on the verge of kind of giving up billion apiers jobs on the line, whatever. Um, at Alabama is a place that Tennessee has not played very well at all. Recently. Um, Georgia has just pretty much since 2016 has just crushed us. And then, like I said, in the swamp has been, um, just an absolute death trap for the Vols since 20 years. So,
Zack: um
Zack: The quarterback situation, from what I've heard, coming out of camp is not very good. ah The entire passing game, from what I've heard, is not very good. This team is going to rely on the run game. It's going to rely on a tight end play, I think, to to push the passing game forward.
Zack: Wide receiver is pretty thin, and they're going to rely on the defense to to really limit the number of points scored. um Tens, what do you got here? What what do you think?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Um, yeah, I don't know. I don't, I are played for a long time, but I I'm not a big fan of our receiver core. Um, our defensive line got depleted.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Lot was drafted.
Zack: Yep.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: James Pierce was drafted. i i feel like there's some questions in the secondary. We've got the, uh, the guy who's on the team, but not on the team kind of situation.
Zack: Yep. Boo Carter.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah. But Carter, um,
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: but But still, I think we win the games that you said. So we just have to win one. And I'm so low on Oklahoma.
Zack: Yeah.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: i I might be the only one because everything I see on the streets is Oklahoma's the sleeper team this year. Blah, blah, blah, bla blah, blah. blah um No.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Sorry. Brent Venables is is a bad coach. He's bad. He's bad at his job. He's a bad recruiter. um He was a Clemson merchant.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: And Clemson was a Dabo merchant and Dabo was a Trevor Lawrence merchant.
Zack: Trevor Lawrence Merchant.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: ah
Zack: Oh, that's funny.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: oh
Zack: Okay, so I'm just going to tell you I think I'm going under eight and a half wins.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: So we're full circle.
Zack: I believe in setting expectations low.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: I think there's a chance that we drop one. in the I mean, I gave us all eight of those wins. i think there's those aren't for sure things we lost to Arkansas last year.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Arkansas, Kentucky, Vandy, like we could drop one of those, you know?
Zack: i mean, Vanderbilt's proven that they can, they can beat the, the big boys. It's not, that wouldn't be a shock anymore. They'd be Oklahoma and Alabama.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: um
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: I just think that we're in a, this is going to be a little bit of a rebuild year. We have five-star quarterback coming in next year. We have a starting quarterback that, was at UCLA last year and didn't really play at all.
Zack: I mean, did he, he was the biggest winner of the Nico situation.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: He went from being the starter at UCLA to the starter at Tennessee by doing nothing.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: yeah
Zack: mean, he, he literally just inherited the job somehow. um I hope he's good. I think they could win nine games potentially. um I just think there's too many question marks around the team.
Zack: um I think that's kind of a consensus around college football. I think a lot of people are thinking that um ah they're not really pushing for a playoff spot as much this year, which there's lots happened. So it's not a shock.
Zack: Mason, you have any thoughts on Tennessee before we move on?
Mason: Nope, you guys did a great job breaking that down.
Zack: Thank you, Mason.
Mason: Have you seen have you seen like any tape from starting quarterback? like Do you know? Have you seen much?
Zack: uh they don't release a lot to be honest um i know that at at appalachian state he he tended to throw a lot of interceptions he's pretty aggressive he was like a gunslinger was kind of his um how he was categorized which you can get away with it at a place like app state i feel like um you can make mistakes and not just get immediately just penalized for it where in the sec that doesn't happen as often
Mason: Okay, I didn't know.
Mason: Mm-hmm.
Zack: um I think the run game is going very good. um I think that Hypel's offense is kind of a plug and play for the run. that He has a lot of elite running backs come from his program. So, I don't know. um i my hopes are My expectations are pretty low.
Zack: If we get into nine wins, I think that's a win for that's a huge win for the organization. If we somehow got to ten wins, that would be an incredible season. So, that's where I'm at.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: This is super.
Zack: Okay.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah, sorry.
Zack: Yep.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I was just reading something. The the Jags just traded for a Saints defensive tackle. We just played each other in the like three hours ago and then they just traded us one of their defensive tackles. That's very random.
Mason: While we're doing the random stuff, go ahead
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: he He's like, but we haven't even left New Orleans yet.
Zack: Liam Cohen's like, I want that guy. Get him on and over here.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: He can just like pack up his stuff and hop on our plane and be at practice.
Zack: What if he did it on the field, like at halftime? They made him trade jerseys.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: That's crazy.
Zack: That'd be kind of sick, actually.
Mason: ahead. That happened for MLB this year, like twice.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: yeah baseball yeah
Mason: Yeah, where they actually like did change jerseys and then go pitch for the other team. That like legitimately happened. I heard about that. Okay.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: sorry this dude this guy is six feet tall 340 pounds it's a nose tackle baby it's a lot of man
Mason: Good little intermission there. No, I'm here for it.
Zack: this
Zack: Okay, so we got two more teams to cover today. Let's go ahead and go to Ole Miss. Eight and a half over under wins. I will say Miss is in the bottom third of the toughest SEC schedules. They also benefit from playing a lot of the ah bottom tier teams.
Zack: um Lane Kiffin, obviously, this is last year was seen as kind of the the need to get it done year with Jackson Dart. ah They had a lot that left to the NFL.
Zack: um they They lost a lot of players. um actually have a list of them. They had two first rounders go, Walter Nolan and Jackson Dart.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: Two second rounders go, Trey Harris and Trey Amos. a third rounder, a fourth rounder, a fifth rounder, and a sixth rounder. So they had um eight total players drafted last year. That's a lot.
Zack: And they
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Surely that team went are in the playoffs, right? They've made a run.
Zack: they did not, which has become kind of a Lane Kiffin.
Zack: Lane Kiffin and Texas A&M as a whole program have a can't win the big one type of mentality right now, I think feel like around them. ah Lane Kiffin is he's going to put a good team on the field, but he he can't take the jump to elite and can't take the jump to that 10-win or 11-win slots. he He's going to drop a few.
Zack: um and so that's where they were last year, Jackson Dart. mean, they had the best team they were going they were probably going to have. ah He went out and found some additions in the portal.
Zack: He is very good at at playing the portal and and picking up some guys that he needed. ah They have a, their quarterback position actually is, is not in bad shape. Austin Simmons. He's been, he's a junior and he's been with Ole Miss. So he was not a transfer.
Zack: A lot of people really like him or saying he looks pretty good, but they are replacing a lot on the ah wide receivers. They're replacing a lot of those guys. Plus a lot of the um defense, defensive line cornerbacks.
Zack: So yeah, A pretty tricky situation. i Like Tennessee, their non-conference is kind of pedestrian. They've got Georgia State, Tulane, Washington State, and Citadel.
Zack: I'm going to give all four of those as wins. So congrats, Ole Miss, on those wins. So let's see what they have left. um They actually like Tennessee.
Zack: They play all four of the bottom four SEC teams. So a very similar schedule. They play Mississippi state, Kentucky, Arkansas. No, no, they don't play Vanderbilt. They play three of the four.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: So they have, so they have those three. Um, the rest of their schedule is, is not easy though. So going to give them seven wins right now. Uh, here are the rest of their five games.
Zack: They host LSU. That's going to have a lot of implications that came there. Um, that could be a That could be like a playoff game in the first half of the season, essentially. yeah um Both of these teams are going to be fighting for playoff spots, I think.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I hate both of them.
Zack: LSU and Ole Miss.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I'm so down on them both of them.
Zack: I'm just telling you, probably going to happen.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I know. I know I'm like one of the only ones. Like, Nussmeier, I know we have we're not on LSU yet, but I'm just so, I'm so down on them too.
Zack: and Will be.
Zack: ah Yeah, I mean, I think Ness Meyer has only been a media quarterback so far in college.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I'm like down on the whole SEC, honestly. Like, I keep looking at all their win totals and i'm like under, under, under.
Zack: Tensors take under here on every team.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: But, But somebody's going to win these games. Well, no, took the over on Missouri because they're schedule merchants.
Zack: It's true.
Zack: Facts. ah Yeah, I mean, it it could be true. I think we're we'll talk about LSU in a second. They're another team like Lane Kiffin. LSU and Ole Miss have a lot of similarities than that.
Zack: ah coaches have been good but not great. they they've not They've not gone over the hump and made it to the playoff and made it to postseason play. they They lose one or two big games in the regular season. That just kind of cuts their season short.
Zack: So huge game ah hosting LSU there. They go to Georgia. They go to Oklahoma. And they go they host South Carolina and Florida.
Zack: You've got to win two of those games to hit the over.
Zack: I mean, I think, see, the the Florida situation is very tricky late in the season because who knows?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Florida's so tricky. They're so tricky, man. Yeah.
Zack: um florida Florida and South Carolina both are ones that make you scared to, like, going to maybe split those games. They're playing both back-to-back at home at Ole Miss.
Zack: I just think it would be tough to be both those teams in a row with kind of the rosters and and what and their build.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: um South Carolina is going to beat you up.
Zack: um Playing two good quarterbacks, mobile quarterbacks, who could beat you.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: yeah they but Yeah, both their quarterbacks are similar. They want to run.
Zack: Yep.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: They're good athletes. They both have good run games behind them at the running back position and good defensive line. so
Zack: The tricky part is, although I mean, there's probably a bye game. I don't have the bye weeks labeled, but they have they're like back-to-back-to-back-to-back-to-back. LSU, Georgia, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Florida are all kind of consecutive.
Zack: um And so... the question is really, do they win two out of those five games? I say they win one of either South Carolina or Florida.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: yeah
Zack: So then you have one left between hosting LSU, going to Georgia, going to Oklahoma.
Zack: I know it is down Oklahoma as well. Um,
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I'm so down on them. Yeah. i
Zack: This one's tricky to predict because I think la or the ah Austin Simmons of it all is kind of a big question mark.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Like.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: I've i've seen a lot of people predicting.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: That's another under.
Zack: i think um think I'm going over. think I'm going over. um
Zack: I just think they're going to win one of those three. don't think they're going to beat Georgia on the road, but I think hosting LSU going to Oklahoma, they can win one of those two, I think is my math.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah. ah Yeah, probably. Yep. Kiffin's like a good enough coach. They'll hit that.
Zack: though they They could, they could hit nine wins and still not make the playoffs, which would be pretty funny.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Zack: I think that's still as a very valid possibility.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: And then he takes the Florida job. It's just a year later.
Zack: That would be something. Okay, our last our last team today. We're going to move through this. The team we've just talked about, LSU. ah Brian Kelly, Garrett Nussmeyer, one of those premier returning. They're rated top 10 in the nation in the first AP poll.
Zack: I think a lot because of Garrett Nussmeyer's return. He she wasn't very good last year, but he is... and a year older. They they do benefit from a not bad SEC schedule.
Zack: They do not benefit from a non-conference schedule. That includes playing Clemson in week one. ah that That may be it's this the second biggest game of week one, only to Texas, Ohio State.
Zack: ah Clemson, LSU, ah it's a very fun matchup.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah. It's pretty
Zack: um Clemson has played Georgia in this slot last year and got smacked.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: pretty bad
Zack: Clemson, lot of people are expecting Clemson is going to much, much better this year. ah They also have a returning quarterback in Cade Klubnick. So that's going a very fun first game of the season. I think Clemson is favored in that game.
Zack: So that's going tough one. The rest their non-conference Louisiana Tech, Southeast Louisiana, and Western Kentucky.
Zack: Yeah, fun stuff there. So looking at their sec schedule after that. So I've got three for sure wins. I'm going count Clemson as a loss for LSU.
Zack: We've got hosting Florida going to Ole Miss, a game that we said could be very important for both of these programs. They host South Carolina. They go to Vandy. They host Texas A&M. They go to Alabama.
Zack: They host Arkansas and they go to Oklahoma. Both these teams have to travel to Oklahoma. Um, which I think was was pretty low-key last year because they were pretty bad.
Zack: do think that road trip is a little different if Oklahoma is is pushing um and is playing a lot better. So let's go ahead give them three wins. I'm going to say ah Arkansas is a win. Vanderbilt is a win, so that's five.
Zack: will tell you that Florida, Ole Miss, South Carolina, as your first three SEC games is – Not an easy schedule at all there. um And then they have Alabama and Texas A&M back-to-back later on in the season.
Zack: That Clemson game could mess up this over-under, though. um
Zack: You know, they do feel like an 8- or 9-win team. um But LSU always feels like a 9-win team. that she' like That's just like their thing, you know?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I don't feel this team is as loaded and Brian Kelly to me is not the coach that gets him over the hump of he's just not a good coach. He's just not.
Zack: It's a game that Florida has to win early if they want to push for any kind of playoff. Like if they lose that game, it's they're in trouble. Ole Miss, like I said, as well is is pushing there. um I think I'm going one under.
Zack: I'm not sure I believe in this LSU team.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I definitely don't.
Zack: Uh,
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I would almost say go ahead and bet Florida to the beat them, beat LSU, but it's a night game early in season.
Zack: yeah, I know.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: that I'm a little – LSU at night is tough.
Zack: I don't And in the, that, mean, that's always a ah huge piece going to Alabama, going, mean, even going to Oklahoma There, going to Ole Miss. There's a couple of losses there, I feel like, and then they play some good teams.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah. Yeah.
Zack: um They have to play Clemson as well. So even if you just say they lose to Clemson, they lose on the road at Alabama, they lose on the road at Ole Miss, and they lose to, like, Oklahoma or Florida, there's your eight wins.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah, I like under for them too.
Zack: So, okay.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: For sure.
Zack: Well, there you have it, folks. Okay.
Zack: I always say I'm going to be quick through those and I never am quick. So sorry. Do we want to wrap up with some, some NFL talk?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: i just I had one ah future ah player prop I wanted to give out, and this is just based also off of what I've seen in his career and what I have seen this preseason and training camp.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Guys, Justin Fields might be really bad at throwing a football forward.
Mason: Mm-hmm.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I'm pulling, I'm pulling up his, yeah, here we go. Under 2,551 yards under is plus 100. Now I took this a week ago.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: might, that might not be plus 100 anymore. um He's looked really bad. it He is getting absolutely roasted on Twitter. um There's been obvious frustration from the head coach and Garrett Wilson during their first two preseason games.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: And he is a mobile quarterback. He has gotten injured before. was like not like big injuries, but like missed a couple games. ah You always have that risk with a mobile quarterback.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: um So I'm going to say I like his under. Anything under 25-50 is good with me.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: And under his passing yard or passing touchdown prop, I think it was like 17-1⁄2, which is crazy number for a starting quarterback.
Mason: I like it. Well, ah for someone that has been a Justin Fields fan in the past, ah just seeing a lot of the preseason stuff makes me very nervous.
Mason: And training camp. There's a video going around of just like all these like insane misses ah passing-wise.
Zack: Thank
Mason: So we'll see what happens. But... um If you want to link that up, I've seen a lot of um ah wide receiver Wilson, Garrett Wilson unders as well, ah just based on the quarterback play. So we'll see what happens.
Mason: um This is the only one thing that I was kind of, I don't have a prop for this, but just keep keep an out for this in the rumor mill. This kind of just dropped a little bit before the pod.
Mason: ah Brian ah Thomas Jr. Have you heard about this, Tens?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: What?
Mason: ah Running back for the commanders.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Brian Robinson. Sorry.
Mason: Brian Robinson.
Zack: I was also like, hmm.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah, I was like, we've we've already we're at an hour, but if you want to get in a fight, we can go, because I thought you were about to try to say something slanderous about my king.
Mason: Brian Robinson. Sorry.
Mason: Yeah. So Brian, to no, Brian Robinson. Yes. Sorry. There we go. Brian Robinson is in the trade rumor mill right now.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah.
Mason: So everybody's wondering, hmm, there might be an opportunity. if you get Keep an eye out for a late sleeper if he ends up seventh-round pick. and ah And I may be butchering this name, but Jacory Crosskey Merritt. Does that sound right?
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I don't know. I got him in Dynasty like two weeks ago.
Mason: I'm just going. Yeah.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: I picked him up everywhere because I saw the hype. It was building.
Mason: I mean, there's a lot of training camp, good like... um Play surfacing a lot of preseason. so well he any place tomorrow And in preseason. so we'll see what happens there. But just keep an eye out for that name as well.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: um
Mason: Late Flyer.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Robinson Jr. is going to end up a...
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Cincinnati Bengal.
Mason: You heard it here first. Not Brian Thomas Jr., Brian Robinson Jr.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Yeah, don't.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: i was I was like, what what are you doing?
Zack: i just felt I felt Ten's about to fight. I i was like, uh-oh.
Mason: No, no, no, no. I didn't have it. I had the rookie quarterback's name pulled up, but I went blank on the the commander's trade rumor mill thing.
Mason: I didn't have that pulled up.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Gotcha.
Mason: So there we go. That's what was looking I'm like, hey, help me out here. I feel like that's not right.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: and Well, no, I thought you were like, i was
Mason: yeah No, 10's not all the time. I want to fight with you, okay?
Zack: don't know.
Mason: Even though it seems like it in the last five, 10 days.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: was getting visibly angry in the way you were looking at me. I was like, what is he doing? Is he trying to just call me up?
Mason: No, not this time.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: ah Not.
Mason: Maybe later.
Next Guy Up Podcast Network: Okay.
Mason: Tomorrow morning while I'm at work. I'll start taking shots. All right. Good work, everybody. Is that a pod?
Zack: Great work.
