Introduction to Solarpreneur Podcast

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome to the Solarpreneur Podcast, where we teach you to take your solar business to the next level.
00:00:08
Speaker
My name is Taylor Armstrong.
00:00:10
Speaker
I went from $50 in my bank account and struggling for groceries to closing 150 deals in a year and cracking the code on why sales reps fell.
00:00:19
Speaker
I teach you how to avoid the mistakes I made and bring in the top solar dogs of the industry to let you in on the secrets of generating more leads, falling up like a pro, and closing more deals.
00:00:31
Speaker
What is a Solarpreneur you might ask?
00:00:33
Speaker
A Solarpreneur is a new breed of Solar Pro that is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve mastery and you are about to become one.
00:00:42
Speaker
how to increase your income without getting more sales, and an introduction to next episode's guest.
00:00:48
Speaker
All that coming up on today's episode.
00:00:51
Speaker
Hope you're doing well.
00:00:52
Speaker
My name is Taylor Armstrong, and as usual, we're here to help you increase your sales, increase your referrals and leads, and hopefully have a much better time in the solar industry.
00:01:03
Speaker
We're kicking off 2022 with a bang.

Teaser for Upcoming Episode with Ricardo Ricci

00:01:06
Speaker
If I didn't tell you yet, happy New Year's.
00:01:08
Speaker
Hope you're doing awesome.
00:01:10
Speaker
I'm excited for this episode because next episode we're going to hear from Ricardo Ricci.
00:01:17
Speaker
If you haven't heard of this guy, he is the Italian stallion of solar.
00:01:22
Speaker
And that's why we're talking about the topic today because this guy, as far as I know, broke a record for most revenue done in a single month in the industry.
00:01:32
Speaker
Okay, not an official record, but from what I've heard, it's a record.
00:01:37
Speaker
So we're going to talk about

Promoting Door to Door Con

00:01:38
Speaker
that.
00:01:38
Speaker
But before we jump into the topic, I wanted to remind you we're getting down to the wire.
00:01:44
Speaker
Go and get your ticket for door to door con.
00:01:47
Speaker
I want to see all my solar peeps there.
00:01:49
Speaker
It is going to be January 13th through the 15th.
00:01:53

00:02:00
Speaker
Hope to see you there.
00:02:02
Speaker
Go get your tickets.
00:02:03
Speaker
And then just wanted to give a shout out to all the people that are sharing the podcast, that are leaving comments, that are leaving reviews, that are sending it to friends, that are sending it to their managers, they're sending it to their teams.
00:02:15
Speaker
Really helps the podcast grow.
00:02:17
Speaker
And in all honesty, that's the only reason this podcast is still going.
00:02:22
Speaker
So if you want more content, if you want more fire guests and episodes, please continue to share it.
00:02:28
Speaker
Continue to leave reviews.
00:02:30
Speaker
Continue to shoot me your feedback, your comments, because that's how we make improvements.
00:02:35
Speaker
And just keep on continuing with great content on the Solarpreneur podcast.
00:02:40
Speaker
So before we jump into the topic, I wanted to give a big thank you to Mac and Cheese, the latest review.
00:02:47
Speaker
He says, great stuff.
00:02:48
Speaker
Really enjoy this podcast.
00:02:49
Speaker
I pick up a lot of my golden nuggets that I use throughout my sales process.
00:02:54
Speaker
Taylor brings on some really cool guests as well.
00:02:57
Speaker
That keeps it fresh.
00:02:58
Speaker
10 out of 10 recommend to anyone in the solar industry.
00:03:01
Speaker
Also a great tool for managers looking for trainings for their team.
00:03:05
Speaker
And also, I just realized this, they're now allowing people to leave reviews on Spotify.
00:03:11
Speaker
Before it was only on Apple Podcasts where you could leave a review.
00:03:15
Speaker
So if you're one of those Android weird people, just kidding, I like my Android friends as well, but...
00:03:21
Speaker
If you're someone that's listening to the podcast on Spotify, you can now go leave a review on there.
00:03:27
Speaker
So much appreciated if you want to hop on Spotify and leave a review or continue to share it.
00:03:33
Speaker
So let's jump into today's

The Value of Selling Solar at True Price

00:03:35
Speaker
topic.
00:03:35
Speaker
It's going to be a quick one because we're going to go much more in depth with our next guest, Ricardo Ritchie.
00:03:42
Speaker
But he just got me thinking about how important it is to sell your...
00:03:48
Speaker
systems for what they're worth.
00:03:49
Speaker
What do I mean by that?
00:03:51
Speaker
There's so many people that are selling panels that are selling their solar contracts for dirt cheap.
00:03:57
Speaker
Okay.
00:03:58
Speaker
I hear these people that maybe they're doing a ton of sales, maybe they're having success, but then you go to see what they're selling their systems at.
00:04:06
Speaker
And sometimes it's extremely low.
00:04:09
Speaker
And I know this because I'm in San Diego.
00:04:11
Speaker
We're pretty much the most saturated markets probably in the world as far as I know.
00:04:17
Speaker
And there's a million companies there.
00:04:18
Speaker
And what happens when people start getting all these quotes?
00:04:22
Speaker
A lot of people get prices that are way cheaper than what I was selling for.
00:04:29
Speaker
And really, you don't need to be doing that, especially when we're in markets where the electricity is expensive.
00:04:36
Speaker
Why are you selling at rock bottom prices when you can sell for what you're worth?
00:04:40
Speaker
You can make a great income.
00:04:42
Speaker
You can make a great commission on it.
00:04:44
Speaker
And you can keep the customer happy.
00:04:47
Speaker
Hey, and the reason this is so important, it's a race to the bottom.
00:04:51
Speaker
If people start dropping prices, what do they do?
00:04:55
Speaker
Customers just want cheaper, cheaper, cheaper, and it's bad for the industry as a whole.
00:05:02
Speaker
I think I've told this story on the podcast, but this was, I think, seven, eight months ago.
00:05:09
Speaker
I had a little chain of Indian referrals going, and those that have been selling for a while, you know that Indians are notorious, I'm talking about the country, India, for wanting to barter prices.
00:05:21
Speaker
And I love my Indians.
00:05:23
Speaker
No racism, none of that, but it's just in the culture from what I've seen.
00:05:28
Speaker
They love talking with friends.
00:05:29
Speaker
They love feeling like they get the best deal.
00:05:32
Speaker
And they love bartering.
00:05:34
Speaker
So I made the mistake with this little chain of Indian referrals.
00:05:39
Speaker
One of them, of course, started bartering with me.
00:05:43
Speaker
Couldn't close them.
00:05:43
Speaker
He went and got cheaper prices.
00:05:46
Speaker
And what did I do?
00:05:47
Speaker
Instead of building more value, I just dropped my commission, cheap as possible to compete with his prices.
00:05:53
Speaker
Ended up getting the sell, but made next to nothing on it.
00:05:58
Speaker
And got some referrals out of it.
00:06:00
Speaker
But then what does he do?
00:06:01
Speaker
He goes and tells all his friends now, hey, I got my solar for this price.
00:06:06
Speaker
Make sure he gives you the same deal.
00:06:08
Speaker
And then all of a sudden...
00:06:10
Speaker
four or five deals later from all these Indian referrals.
00:06:13
Speaker
It was great.
00:06:14
Speaker
I got some referrals.
00:06:16
Speaker
And, you know, better than nothing.
00:06:18
Speaker
But I dropped price on all of them.
00:06:19
Speaker
So after four or five deals in, I probably made what I would have made on one deal.
00:06:24
Speaker
So on what I normally would have sold at.
00:06:27
Speaker
So don't fall into this mistake.

Creating Value-Filled Offers

00:06:29
Speaker
Make sure you're building value in whatever you do.
00:06:32
Speaker
I follow Russell Brunson has a great podcast for those that are into marketing.
00:06:38
Speaker
It's called Marketing Secrets.
00:06:40
Speaker
He talks about this all the time, that there's no competitive advantage to being the second cheapest.
00:06:47
Speaker
So you either should be the cheapest in town, which most people don't want to do or can't afford to do, right?
00:06:54
Speaker
Or you should be the most expensive in
00:06:59
Speaker
Okay.
00:06:59
Speaker
And then as you do that, you can build more value.
00:07:02
Speaker
If you're selling it high, that gives you more revenue.
00:07:05
Speaker
It gives you more profit profits.
00:07:07
Speaker
You can hire a team.
00:07:08
Speaker
You can send your customers gifts.
00:07:11
Speaker
You can be happier.
00:07:13
Speaker
You can afford to spend much more time with your customers.
00:07:15
Speaker
Cause guess what?
00:07:16
Speaker
All these Indians that I sold about eight months ago, do you think I wanted to be spending a ton of time with them when I was making nothing on them?
00:07:26
Speaker
So it's not being greedy, but you got to take care of your family.
00:07:28
Speaker
You got to take care of yourself.
00:07:29
Speaker
You got to make what you're worth.
00:07:32
Speaker
So that's why I think it's better to create an offer.
00:07:34
Speaker
Another marketing concept that I love is not just selling a product because there are, like I said, a million solar companies.
00:07:44
Speaker
Maybe not a million, but there are probably hundreds in San Diego.
00:07:48
Speaker
I know in other competitive markets, we're competing with a ton of people.
00:07:52
Speaker
So what do you do?
00:07:53
Speaker
Create an offer.
00:07:55
Speaker
So figure out how you can build more value, figure out how you can be more expensive.
00:07:59
Speaker
And we're not talking about gouging people here, right?
00:08:02
Speaker
As you're not trying to be 10 times more expensive than your competitors, but you're trying to be more expensive and provide more value.
00:08:12
Speaker
So think instead of just selling the standard panels, what can you, maybe you can do some premium panels, sell it for more
00:08:19
Speaker
Maybe your company offers, I don't know, a longer guarantee, longer roof penetration warranty.
00:08:26
Speaker
Make sure you know your contract.
00:08:27
Speaker
Make sure you know what your company is offering.
00:08:31
Speaker
And if your company is encouraging you to be the cheapest and they're not giving good guarantees, well, hey, maybe it's time to look at some different installation options.
00:08:41
Speaker
Maybe it's time to look at, I don't know, switching companies.
00:08:46
Speaker
Okay, obviously you don't just switch companies for the heck of it, but make sure you have multiple options to provide your customers.
00:08:54
Speaker
If you're constantly getting beat on price and you have no extra value to add, then figure something out.
00:09:00
Speaker
Talk with your company, talk with your managers.
00:09:02
Speaker
How can you create more value?
00:09:04
Speaker
Can you send your customers some gifts?
00:09:07
Speaker
Hey, for years, we've been sending our customers a box of cookies when they get their site survey done.
00:09:15
Speaker
We've experimented with sending out like bottles of wine after they get their install done.
00:09:22
Speaker
You can send them pizza.
00:09:24
Speaker
We did that for a little bit.
00:09:26
Speaker
Get creative with it.
00:09:27
Speaker
What can you send your customers?
00:09:28
Speaker
How can you increase the value in what you're doing?
00:09:31
Speaker
I know a box of pizza isn't going to give you the justification to sell for 10 grand more than your competitors, but think what equipment can you provide?
00:09:42
Speaker
What value can you bring?
00:09:43
Speaker
What warranties can you offer?
00:09:45
Speaker
How can you justify that your customer spends more going with you and how can you provide them more service?
00:09:53
Speaker
So I want you to go write down five ways how you can provide more value.
00:09:57
Speaker
And like I said, next episode, we're bringing on Ricardo Richie.
00:10:01
Speaker
This dude did 43 deals in a month, over 2 million in revenue, which in the San Diego area, I think it's the unofficial record.
00:10:09
Speaker
So you're not going to want to miss out on what he has to say and how he was able to price his customers for what he is worth and then also keep them happy and give them a great deal as well.
00:10:21
Speaker
So make sure to tune in to next episode.
00:10:23
Speaker
Let me know how you guys build value in your product, in your offers, as you are out there slinging your solar deals.
00:10:30
Speaker
And remember, don't drop price.
00:10:33
Speaker
Go make what you're worth.
00:10:35
Speaker
So I hope that helps, and we will see you on the next episode.
