Introduction & Weekend Activities
00:00:01
Speaker
Let's let get right into it. I don't even need a cute name for the secret homework. ah it's It's episode 91. Bree, what was your weekend snap?
00:00:15
Speaker
How was your weekend snap? And keep it snappy.
00:00:19
Speaker
Okay. um ah Do you ever reach for something by default just to realize it no longer brings you joy?
00:00:30
Speaker
And if you've listened to me talk about Snap on the podcast last couple weeks, you might realize. Oh, no. I didn't worry about Snap. No, it's fine. I just prescribed myself a week off
Mental Health & Taking Breaks from Snap
00:00:42
Speaker
of Snap. Because we all, if you're listening to this podcast, you probably have those default times. It's like the time you reach for Snap. Like, oh, I have a little bit of time until I, do this thing.
00:00:52
Speaker
And snap time, you know, we're like, or and now I have some time I should try to get to inventory. Anyway, so now it's like, no I will resist all those urges and, ah you know, take a week off just so I can allow my so sanity meter to regen.
00:01:08
Speaker
Because I don't have a flower crown. I can dump stuff. and Okay. So I thought in in light of the fact that I have last two weeks in a row, I think, taken twice as long in my weeks since Snap. And I do have a ah kind of ah a bit of a secret homework to
Deck Strategies & Snap Gameplay
00:01:28
Speaker
get through. i thought I would keep it snappy and get right there.
00:01:35
Speaker
All right. ah a I'm all here for a break. I think not just for Snap, for anything. Anything you love. Sometimes getting some space from it can... It's like the best thing you can do for that relationship.
00:01:48
Speaker
ah Ben, how was your week in Snap and keep it snappy? Well, endeavoring to keep it snappy as I sometimes do. I'm even going to use my 4 minute and 57 second timer.
00:02:00
Speaker
Rarely exactly 5. But you know... It's close enough for jazz or whatever. Or close enough for snap. um Gosh, I have been playing some snap. Some weeks are light snap weeks. This has been a relatively heavy snap week. Last month, I didn't even hit infinite. Just wasn't wasn't feeling it. Wasn't enjoying the meta. This month, wow, people have been playing some decks that I kind of... I'm not...
00:02:27
Speaker
There's some popular decks that I'm not very impressed with, and I just love beating up on them. Ooh, baby. Anywho. You know, as as the week went on, I've been playing a lot of Surfer and stuff, and people did start playing more, like, tech against Surfer. I'm seeing more Stardusts. I'm seeing, you know, some some more Mobiuses. Mobii, if you will. um I don't know about that. But, you know, Mother Iskani is... ah
00:03:01
Speaker
the name on everyone's lips. we're all We're all thinking about her. We're all playing her. We're all duplicating things and reducing their costs and giving them plus two power. So it's understandable that they they bring in the time cop.
00:03:16
Speaker
ah But I did hit infinite this month, so that's that's cool. So
Conquest Mode & Infinity Tickets
00:03:20
Speaker
that's out of the way. Also, before I made the infinite push, I was just having so much fun off of last week's secret homework to play a bunch of conquest. I was like, I think i'm just going keep playing a bunch of conquest. It's really fun. So, um, I played a bunch of conquest.
00:03:36
Speaker
I've got, I got enough infinity tickets that if I don't get an avatar this month, uh, it will probably be from, you know, my own, uh, you know, I can't say I don't have enough tickets to get it done, I guess is what I'm trying to say. So it's been a good it's been a good week for snapping. And I didn't like plan it out or anything. But seeing as I've got all my my ducks in a row for infinite and infinity tickets and stuff, this was actually...
Sanctum Surge vs. Showdown
00:04:09
Speaker
pretty good time to get a limited time game mode for me personally which uh very rarely feels like the case mostly i feel put upon when they when they come around i'm like oh my gosh that's what i needed another obligation in my life except this one it's sanctum surge uh you you may have guessed from the name or from also playing the same game that we play that uh Oh, that's like a Sanctum Showdown. And it is like Sanctum Showdown, but you start with more energy and like, you know, it's just, what if you started in the middle of a game of Sanctum Showdown or something like that? I don't know. Point is to me, it still plays very similarly to Sanctum Showdown and I'm playing the same deck I played last time. Really? And it's just kicking everybody's ass. Yeah. Yeah.
00:05:01
Speaker
Also, i do have decks from the the regular snapping that I was doing, the infinite climbing and all that. I was playing Homework Surfer from last week's Secret Homework. But also,
Surfer Deck Strategies & Snap Combos
00:05:14
Speaker
i was playing Snowball Surfer, an earlier surfer deck. That one's got Sholau and Cannonball.
00:05:19
Speaker
I was also playing a little bit of my Supergiant Surfer deck, which also has Cannonball, but no Sholau. And i had a whole new surfer deck that I was playing with.
00:05:30
Speaker
This one is just called Surfers um because it's got Chameleon and Prodigy and the Mother Iskani. And very often on the last turn or two, you know.
00:05:45
Speaker
playing upwards of three surfers or whatever, you know? And ah that's that's pretty fun. it's It's not the most, like, interactive of the surfer decks that I was playing on the way to Infinite, but I did play a lot of it, and it was a lot of fun, and it, you know, it went super... yeah Like, i was I was putting out, like, Mojo World numbers on locations that were not Mojo World, if you know what I mean.
00:06:11
Speaker
so that's that's been ah It's been a fun week of surfing and snapping. and I play no surfer in Sanctum. so i I'll get get to go back to my move routes. I do love when the cards go to different locations. o putting it big um anywho yeah it's been ah It's been a great week of Snap. I've got about 20 seconds left on the timer, but I will yield. I yield my time.
00:06:37
Speaker
What's ah my My week in Snap, I have been... Been in a rut thinking of of fun combos. My latest one, and you know, if somebody has an idea for this, let me know, but but I think maybe it's a dead end.
00:06:54
Speaker
I'm almost positive that Dormammu's third ritual actually counts as a move, like a capital M move, will buff Kraven type move if he's already on the board. So I'm like, what kind of cute thing can I do with that? But there aren't really a lot of cards that just like generically pay off move.
00:07:11
Speaker
So i was like, I could do a surf ah or a Sparky stack, but it's like, but then why wouldn't I just do like a Maverick stack and play Dormammu? Like, how do I make it unique that he's moving? Maybe there's not an answer. i think you're right.
Challenges in Snap Combo Design
00:07:24
Speaker
Sorry. I just, I'm like like, I can, yeah. Yeah. There's, there's, there isn't the right card to make it like that was a move. Yeah. I guess I could beef up a Craven. You okay with that? That's the thing. You're muted.
00:07:40
Speaker
You're muted, Ree, you're muted.
00:07:45
Speaker
I'm trying to mute myself more and then I forget, which is why I didn't start to mute myself. No, I was just laughing this whole time because as you were like like sitting, talking about your like you're like a combo block, I was just picturing you like staring out at rain pouring from the sky out the window. and you but Very accurate. What combos are there left? I have done all of the combos. There are no great VIP. Just my combo design is just like...
00:08:13
Speaker
sick I love... Say, I don't love that for you. I just... I just... I love that you love combos. things I do, and I don't know if I'm raising the bar too high or or what. because but There's like there's ah a handful of things. i I have not done a ton with Strife and Mother Ascani, and I think that they both have probably some more like juice that I could... i could ah There's more of a well I could dip into. I don't know what I'm trying to say.
00:08:45
Speaker
I have been through my very long list over and over again. And there's like, there's things in there, but like, I don't love any of them. One of the things is to make a whole flood of angels. And I was like, that's very re...
00:08:56
Speaker
angel I do. I was thinking I haven't gotten to play with Angel lately, but it doesn't feel it's like everything buffs your hand. You know what i mean? And just, yeah. ah So I, I got as far as labbing, like I tested the interaction. If you have three or four angels in hand and you kill one thing, they will all leap out to that location for killing just one thing. So like there's something there.
00:09:22
Speaker
could Mother Ascani a whole bunch of angels and then Killmonger my board or something. But I don't know.
00:09:30
Speaker
If I just Mother Ascani Makari instead, like, you know, it's like. feel like you've run into hand size problems that that keep it from being like really spectacular. Like, you just want to see a whole board full of angels, but like you can't. really do want to see seven fly out of my hand. Yeah.
00:09:47
Speaker
just Have you done a fourth location video yet about how you do like a combo? i would like, because you're just like, and now we get to the labbing phase. Just like Bill Nye. You should dress up like Bill Nye for it. And then um oh oh like a terminology, there should be a glossary at the end. Labbing.
00:10:08
Speaker
Labbing. I mean, it's a real term from like... I know it from the Smash Bros. community. Surely it's bigger than that. But yeah, labbing. You're going to the lab. You're testing interactions. like ah you know it Every now and then it comes up in creator chat. Somebody asks a question about how something works and I just post a Dexter's laboratory gif of Dexter heading off to the lab and then I come back with the answer five minutes later.
00:10:33
Speaker
That makes sense. It's like how to some people, like, LFG is always going to mean looking for group and not let's fucking go. Let's fucking go. Yeah. Mm-hmm. Okay. Okay.
Building Effective Snap Decks
00:10:45
Speaker
I was very confused by FTW the first time I saw it. And then later, my main in Smash Bros. was Wii Fit Trainer, who's WFT. So, you know, anyway. ah I want to talk about Surge more. I'm surprised and pleased to hear, Ben, that your move deck is working. I absolutely spanked one with ah with just a boring big cards deck.
00:11:07
Speaker
I have been very unimpressed with the game so far. I tried to go in with like positive fives. I'm like, it's Sanctum. I love Sanctum. It's my favorite mode, but it's also high voltage and I do not like high voltage. It feels like a mode that has very little decision making and, and it is better than it is better than high voltage, but I think it's a lot worse than Sanctum showdown.
00:11:30
Speaker
That may be. I have not been enjoying it very much so far. It feels a lot like who can draw vision first, that sort of thing. Like like the draws feel like super important.
00:11:44
Speaker
um I feel slightly better about it since realizing that Nimrod isn't banned, so I can be playing Nimrod deck that's pretty fun, and and I feel like I have some choices. um So I feel slightly better about that. Nimrod is, ah is weirdly, it's an archetype I really like.
00:12:01
Speaker
and And it's viable here. so So that might be the saving grace. But right now, my plan is basically I'm not going to play it after I get Ikari.
00:12:13
Speaker
Did you two? I know you played some, Ben. Marie, did you get to play any Surge? Yes, I totally did. I'm glad my experience, because like I said, I was totally planning to come into the podcast not playing when Lauren was like, oh yeah, I'll talk about surge you know, hope you get in a few games. And I was like, oh yes, let me fly off to fourth location to grab a deck because don't want to go and get a few games in.
00:12:39
Speaker
and And it was fun. Okay, because I looked at the decks and I picked the one I wanted. and then I saw I didn't have Ramatut. So then i went to be like, okay, let's it's like a one in nine chance. Let's go see if we can roll Ramatut. And I'm like, you deserve this. And then I click it and then I realized didn't have enough tokens.
00:12:59
Speaker
tried to trick me into spending gold because they do everything without paying a lot of attention. Oh, no. no yeah Yeah, anyway. So then I went back grabbed the second deck. And here we are. Okay. And I went in and, okay, what i said because – To a spoil private conversations. Lauren's like, warning, you know, this is this is what it is. And whatever she said, I was immediately like, ugh. I posted a GIF of ah the amazing Christina Ricci as Wednesday. Iconic. Okay. Doing a face of like, oh, horrific.
00:13:40
Speaker
um Because that's how I feel when I look at any... recent decision I've seen basically automatically assume it's going to taste bad. Once I like, you know, process it.
00:13:53
Speaker
But later I realized I hadn't watched the GIF all the way through because I was also paying attention to what was doing.
00:14:04
Speaker
And at the end of it, she's like, she does the amazing, interesting, richie thing. And her her face does this amazing morph into a like, oh, I love this because I'm a maniac. And I was like, oh, I'm sorry. This is, you know, I didn't i didn't see the end of the GIF. Clearly it doesn't make sense.
00:14:22
Speaker
But then i played a couple of games of, ah wanted to call it Sanctum Supreme, like it was Taco Bell. It's called Sanctum Supreme. Okay. That's what they should have called honestly. That's the Deadpool version, I guess.
00:14:38
Speaker
Yeah. yeah Okay. And then I came back and I'm like, no, that was that was kind of my experience because ah this deck was
Strategic Use of Big Cards
00:14:48
Speaker
me. a Good job, Scott.
00:14:50
Speaker
Good job, Scott. I don't know about your other decks, but this deck immediately for like, i I know you had to build it without ah without saying, h without playing any, like, oh, won me like just game after game because The thing about this game is like, yeah, if ah if you wait around, you can really build into some nonsense combos. But if you play with some big-ass cards, you know what I mean? Where, like, vision is the disappointing thing to draw, then you just beat them before they can build to anything. By the time they've, like like... Oh, they're like, oh, look, I've mother's skin. You'd like four times. It's like too late, sucker.
00:15:31
Speaker
Like, you know what I mean? Like, yeah, that next turn would have been real great for you if you had gotten there. You know, these games go real fast. Most games are ending on like turn four.
00:15:42
Speaker
And people are like are, like, snapping, and I'm winning that location because it's, like, all right. This deck is just, it's, like, big card. And Enchantress, ah the very first deck I played was someone trying to, like, zoo with Patriot.
00:16:01
Speaker
And they stacked their Patriot and Kazaar in the same location. The same. I think about that. When I'm playing... I know, but when I'm playing, like, and I get, if that's their whole thing, is, like, I hope the other person doesn't have an Enchantress, and I'm not even playing a Cosmo. I'm not even playing a Cosmo.
00:16:21
Speaker
good good Good luck with that. But, like, um yeah, I always try and spread like suppress spread out your ongoings if they don't, like, have to be in the same location. Because, yeah.
00:16:34
Speaker
Because, you know how, like, at my Enchantress variant is one of my best splits. You know? So it's like, you better believe if I can play her. She's like, anyway. So, ah okay. But, like, she's also great for when you get a Typhoid Mary. You know why that's so good?
00:16:50
Speaker
Typhoid Mary turn one. Beats, like, what? Like, you know, Drax. Which Drax is in here. We'll talk about him. um You know what i mean? It beats so much that 10, and then later you just go back, slap that Enchantress on it, you know? um Like, this has two... It has Drax and Gamora. Ares?
00:17:11
Speaker
Ares, because this is also just a deck of big cards, and everyone's trying to combo, like, up stuff. I haven't had an Ares lose a fight yet. I've played them on most every game. I've played Starbrand.
00:17:27
Speaker
Wilson Fisk, because you're almost always have the highest card on the board because people are trying to combo stuff. um Fin Fang Foom. everyone I think he's probably just in a lot of decks, to be honest. Scar.
00:17:41
Speaker
You know? um and that's where you can get people think they're going to win, and they're like, they don't know you're going to drop a 12 power, they're going to drop a Gamora, you know? All of that stuff when you know where it's going. And that's where Guardians, I feel like, are the most useful, right? The turn, right? If you can play Gamora that turn where it matters, that, like, the winning thing, you know they're going to play there. And if they don't, they've lost. So, like, boom.
00:18:06
Speaker
um Also... This is why, oh, did I even mention techno-organic virus? Like, obviously key to all of this. So many times I've just started out by playing Starbrand techno-organic virus, right? It's your way, also your other way to negate typhoid. Stagron is in here. I'm sorry.
00:18:23
Speaker
I'm sorry, buddy. He's won me a couple games, you know? And I know Ben's probably playing... I'm playing Stegron, yep, you know it. Yeah, right? So, like, it's like, he does he does good work in this. So, like, especially in this deck where people aren't necessarily expecting a Stegron at all years. So, like, um so, yeah, the weakest card I've been considering replacing is actually Drax.
00:18:52
Speaker
Great thing about this deck is if you whiff with Gamora Drax, you can still make him bigger later with Techno Organic Virus. But like, Drax on turn one, because it's like, play it out. You got to play it out because you have other big cards. There's no reason to play nothing. And then when you whiff, it feels bad. And I thought about, is there like Negasonic Teenage Warhead? And I was asking because I hadn't gotten to check the list. But Lauren says Negasonic Spand...
00:19:20
Speaker
is if wiccan is banned then i don't know maybe drax ended up being the best because you want big cards you want to trigger scar which drax only gets to nine so what i'm saying buddy oh buddy you're the destroyer okay anyway i don't know how many other fours get bigger like crossbones and coal you can't play on turn one i think at least one of them is banned also yeah um
00:19:49
Speaker
ikari ikari i thought about that but it's it's the enemy right like i really wish economy ikari worked for like anyone was a negative power so we would work with like typhoon mary and stuff but i've seen a lot of iska she's pretty nasty
00:20:11
Speaker
Iska may be the thing. She's a little slow, but like she's nasty when she gets going. I want something that you are going
Comparing Sanctum Showdown and Surge Modes
00:20:20
Speaker
to play. Because that's the thing. i With this card, when you have Drax and it's turn one and he's the only thing you play because this deck is a high stack deck, like you want to play him. So I want a card that you want to play. So Isuka is a good... I'll try her.
00:20:32
Speaker
What about a Tuma? Are your opponents going for the the big Sanctum on that first turn? I've seen it about 50-50. Because i have been ignoring that one 100% of the time. I would much rather win the other two.
00:20:48
Speaker
That's why Drax, I feel like. And I am playing small cards. Oh, it's felt so good to have the reprieve from um all the gambiting because like all of my stuff is in like, you know, most it's in high class cards. Like, yeah.
00:21:08
Speaker
Yay. I started with this deck also, and it was pretty fun. Starbrand's a little dangerous. This is actually something I might like more about Surge than regular Sanctum Showdown, is that the off locations are pretty valuable.
00:21:21
Speaker
Like, you can win just by... You can win on the off locations...
00:21:29
Speaker
ah You can't do it on them alone, but like you don't have to win as many Sanctums as you do it in regular Sanctum Showdown. Yes, you can come back by winning the little the little side locations in regular Sanctum too, but they're only worth one point. And in Surge, they're worth two. And that is actually like, I found that to be really meaningful.
00:21:46
Speaker
hum And so Starbrand has felt like risky if I don't have a way to deal with him. I kind of like Atuma here... like It's a lot of points early on, but also like half your deck dies to him. So that's that's fairly risky. But you do also have a bunch of cards that won't die to him. And he feeds Scar.
00:22:05
Speaker
Yeah. ah And you can techno-organic virus him. True. Yeah. You know I'll give it a shot. think it's a good call.
00:22:17
Speaker
um Ben, I know you already spoke on Surge a little bit, but do you have any other Surge thoughts? oh You know, it's still pretty early.
00:22:28
Speaker
um I'm sure metagame will congeal, you know, as it does. ah But it it kind of felt like the Wild West when I was playing. Just all kinds of people trying all kinds of stuff.
00:22:46
Speaker
And that's always a fun time. uh yeah i bet by the time listeners are hearing this things are a little less exciting and uh um i don't i don't have too much to offer about that i do man
Horse Gambit Card Analysis
00:23:03
Speaker
there was there was mention of horse gambit and man i i do despise that card it's it's like no fun it's no fun for anyone but does lose to Surfer a lot. Oh my gosh, I got so many screenshots of these boards of three and four Gambits for my opponent, and it's just not as much power as the surviving Broods and Absorbing Man Broods. and It's just like, gosh, y'all y'all tried so hard to do such an unfun thing, and it doesn't even win the games, you fucking losers.
00:23:35
Speaker
Anyway, that's just how I feel about Horse Gambit. Again, our listeners, if you enjoy Horse Gambit, you're not one of the losers. it's ah It's only other people playing Horse Gambit that are the losers. Oh my gosh.
00:23:50
Speaker
No, it's the fault of the game and the game designer, not the player. Yeah, it can be everybody's fault. Clearly, Horse Gambit is working for some people and fun for some people, or else I don't think his play rate would be so high.
00:24:05
Speaker
No, it's it's for sure a powerful thing to do. And, you know, you shouldn't have to play a thing that's good against it to leave the house. yeah It's a bummer that it's around in the present like in the quantities that it is.
Secret Homework & Media Experiences
00:24:20
Speaker
On to our side quests. First up, and only this week, Secret Homework. This week's Secret Homework was assigned by ree Okay, I just assigned the homework to, ah because I was angry about Snap, and I was like, maybe it will take a week off, when the the idea was percolating, um i was like, tell me about some other media um you are excited about.
00:24:49
Speaker
And i will ah say that um not playing Snap gave me some more time to appreciate some media. I'm not going to talk about it, but i wanted to shout it out because no one's read it. And it was suggested originally by a listener. have been reading Dungeon Crawler, Kara, finally. um Yay!
00:25:11
Speaker
so Yeah! So sometimes it's good to put Snap down head. But, um you know, what I have been, like, ah focused a lot this week is kind of, like, on my own media when I was ah thinking, you know, about it. Because I've been in the state of being like, okay, I paused working on my giant, giant game. I was still coding, so I still needed a good year work left on it. And to make something smaller and finally put it out and learn the process of how to get things out into the store and publish that stuff. And then I've realized i have to, as someone that stepped back from like streaming nightly, which I'd been doing for a while as an outlet, um I needed to get back into
00:26:00
Speaker
ah content creation because ah how else are you to be noticed and in the wide
Collaborative YouTube Series on Game Development
00:26:10
Speaker
world? and And, you know, so when I was thinking, i'm like, oh, am going talk about for my own secret homework that I signed this week? It incepted upon myself Gollum Lake, really? Like, why not me? Why not? Why should it not be mine? and I thought...
00:26:29
Speaker
Okay, i am I wanted to use my time to pitch a ah YouTube series that I am going to do that I'm really excited about. i think it'll be fun. okay so let me ah let me, this would be like a collab with different YouTube creators or streamers, um content creators of some kind, okay?
00:26:57
Speaker
Here's the format. So first there's going to be like a title card of some kind. and it's going to be like, make my game. But then, i don't know, something like me dressed as a fairy or something will down in.
00:27:12
Speaker
tiny, right in between my game, because that's let's face it. I do, i do the work of a developer 10 times the size of myself. I really have in a decade of coding experience, but you know, nevertheless, there are limits. Um, so it is make my tiny game.
00:27:33
Speaker
Okay. That's the title card. Then bam. Okay. Next segment, um, creator, right? They'll probably just send this to me. This would be solo and be like, Hey, look at me. I'm a creator. Like I'm charismatic because I'm doing content creation. This is my vibe. This is my layout. This is what I'm about.
00:27:55
Speaker
And everyone's like, oh, cool. That seems like a cool person. I'm into them. And then, okay, they're like, all right, here's my idea for a tiny game.
00:28:06
Speaker
Okay. And they explain it to me. And I listen intently. Also, probably my artist, maybe, you know. and Then okay, boom. All right. It's interesting. Maybe like they supply like doodles or whatever explanatory that like, you know animate coolly in in editing So if you glance over at your second screen visual stimulation, thanks I'm point is stay engaging throughout right? Yeah, okay ideas explained next segment is um making the game right and
00:28:42
Speaker
Here's me coming in explaining, like, here's the mechanic you might find interesting to know how it works. You know, here's a little bit high in the scenes of some little vign vignette vignettes. I've only ever written it.
00:28:54
Speaker
appreciate that's how you say it. I took like five years of French, so I should also know how to say it. Okay. um That didn't come up in French for some reason. That's odd. Okay.
00:29:06
Speaker
odd And, uh, all right. So, right, like, maybe some, like, art process videos sped up. Like, you know, interesting stuff. Making the game, making the game, making the game. Okay.
00:29:21
Speaker
Boom. Last segment. Okay. Or, like, you know, foreclosing. Creator. Showing off their game that got made. They don't code. They don't. I mean, maybe they do art. Maybe it's quite smart. I don't know. But, like, you know, right?
00:29:38
Speaker
showing it off to everyone. I love watching people like get excited about their creations. Okay. Boom. I thought it. And then I was like, but how do we close it? How do we end this? I wasn't sure at first because you got to have an, you know, you got to have like an ending. It's better if it's two, if it's like ritualistic. I always do better if I have little like rituals for everything I do. Okay. Sure.
00:30:03
Speaker
No, I'm doing well. Okay, so end. All right, the end is me, like I've done, because like a i I do this all the time anyway, is like a little, just a little,
Crochet Projects & Episode Endings
00:30:17
Speaker
it's tiny. So, you know, it's all tiny, is a little tiny crochet project. For example,
00:30:23
Speaker
Here's one i just came back and finished because I had to add a mouth lately. of like ah right It's ah i head it very dark blue. It's very cute. Right? Yes. it's a You can see it's like she's... Oh, her hair is kind of all up in the way.
00:30:38
Speaker
Here, we'll fix it. If you're like... This is a tiny this is a tiny little doll crocheted all drowning in a puddle of round tears. It represents... save the world i did get the pattern but i customized you know i customized the hair that was when i had longer hair couple weeks ago okay so you know how it changes okay anyway right so that's the ending cute little like crochet project representative of the project hopefully not someone drowning in despair hopefully something yeah that's
00:31:10
Speaker
The crochet thing is wildly ambitious to me. That does not feel tiny anymore, but I don't know how long it takes to crochet. i did this in like so fast and half an hour just to learn how to tapestry crochet. like look It is a super duper charming.
00:31:25
Speaker
I think how cute it would be if you put it on and it's in the like row. But this is why it's tiny tiny projects. I'm not talking about my migraroomies. Right. Yeah. Like small.
00:31:37
Speaker
You can add it to the row of all the other existing tiny. Yeah. And that's where it comes out. Extremely charming.
Importance of Collaboration and Unity
00:31:44
Speaker
There's the allure because someone is seeing an episode for the first time and they're like oh, but what's that other project? That's cool. I want to see that episode. Let me look up this playlist.
00:31:57
Speaker
I don't know. I wasn't born with a lot of charisma. I have to use my intellect to guess it would be like. I love it. Ish. Gosh.
00:32:09
Speaker
it's ah It's a fun idea. i will gladly, I mean, i I don't want to invite myself on, but I have heaps of ideas and there's one tiny idea in particular that has been sticky for a long time. Okay. Lauren has always been welcome to do as much as little with anything.
00:32:24
Speaker
i want to know. Okay, because this is this is the – wait, are you saying like you have a tiny game idea? Like you want to be feature? Yeah. I know I don't have a huge audience, but I have a tiny idea that has been – it's been cooking for like 15 years.
00:32:42
Speaker
Okay, no, let's do it! Because the whole... I was expecting to go twice as long. I had a whole pitch. Okay, hold minute. Let's do it. Let's do it to learn. Because here's the thing. I wanted... Wait, right now? i was but I mean, no, no, no. not strike while the iron and You don't need to do anything.
00:33:00
Speaker
No, i I'm talking about... Yeah, no, this is this is my second portion. It's just, like, reattuned. Okay, so, like, I was thinking...
00:33:12
Speaker
um oh i was thinking about the first episode and i'm like okay because once like you know if there's a couple episodes and you can show someone this was is and it's really cool you know what i mean and i have room air it's like like i'm a decade of co-ing experience i show that i can do this um and once i have a couple episodes established maybe i can like approach people that i think are cool and but have cool ideas in different spaces, right? Underserved communities. That would be cool. Okay.
00:33:39
Speaker
And then, but I'm like, for this first episode, I need, i would like a friendly face, you know, while we're like working out, you know, I came up with the format, but the, but the issues, and I want someone who really has an idea they're jazzed about, not someone like I'm going to, that needs to then like come up with a tiny idea. Cause like, You know, so that's perfect. So I was going to this whole pitch and this this super this super applies to Lauren. Lauren, this is this is for you. This is an advertisement that I've made for you.
00:34:12
Speaker
Okay. Are you tired of working really long hours at your job for the man only to go home and work really long hours at your hobby hustle?
00:34:26
Speaker
for a second man who also undervalues and underpays you. It's just something you enjoy doing more. Okay, how would you... Okay, thirdly, unrelatedly.
00:34:41
Speaker
I have a good bridge, but I didn't like plan this all out with early in my head. Okay. ah Have you ever had a really great game idea? But when you told your coding or game development friend, they just said, game ideas are a dime a dozen.
00:34:58
Speaker
It's making it that's hard. And dismissed it. What if someone came to you and said, will make your game.
00:35:10
Speaker
So long as it is tiny. yeah um You know. ah ah And okay. Freeze, pause, think how to end.
00:35:23
Speaker
Bring in Lord of the Rings. It always works. So we close with... How would you like to go on an adventure? Okay, boom.
00:35:35
Speaker
Head over. Sold. Oh, thanks. like i had I was going to plan out more in my head, but then we didn't get all the way through it, so we had to improvise. All right. ah Yay. Okay. All right. Let's do it. Yay. Episode one. Lauren's tiny game. hearing it first.
00:35:51
Speaker
Here. Let's snap on this. All right. Okay. Because this is – all right. To close it – to like – to close out like my secret – because here's where I'm getting from. Like bringing it back to the beginning – Like, i had been I have been so, like, stressed about this. i think this happens to a lot of people ah around my age. Where in some ways you feel like you're not all you're don't.
00:36:18
Speaker
You had something younger, like you could push through more or you're dealing with more stuff now than you had before. And, you know, you've lost like some of that youthful confidence you had because you had seen less of the world.
00:36:32
Speaker
And, um you know, and it's just like, and i that's why I was stressed. It was just, I was so, it was so hard to, to realize like, I have to,
00:36:47
Speaker
you know, I have to either just try and submit to the system and like get into a publisher and stuff to get noticed or i I, alone need to figure out how to like, I like, I i don't think I'm all that to like, you know, break the system. And, and so I actually was thinking,
00:37:08
Speaker
I was thinking about all my favorite media, my favorite cartoons and and game stories and stuff. And it's like, oh, but the message, the message is always that they never did it alone. you don't achieve great things alone, you know? And and that's a hard, that's speaking.
00:37:29
Speaker
That's a hard, that's why they have to put it in all the cartoons because it's a really hard lesson for a lot of us, right? Like, I know for myself, it's just easier to isolate. It's hard, like, you know, to get things wrong with people or I don't know. I just, I have a lot of anxiety around it. But I realized, you know, I have to like, like I have to, ah you know, i have to get out there and, ah you know, Ocean's Eleven it up.
00:37:59
Speaker
Right. You know, it's like together collaborating with other good people. You know, i have I have I have talked. I've met people who have told me they've made their success like on the back of of like.
00:38:17
Speaker
you know, of how so many other people have made their success, like milking others through like, you know, the crypto, like through stuff that you got in by getting in early and bankrupting a bunch of other people kind of stuff.
00:38:31
Speaker
And, and they liked it and they're like, oh it was so horrible and stuff, but it was like what they had to do to like achieve. And I don't believe that you have to do that to achieve success. I believe that's the lie. that continues to be told to make excuses for a lack of humanity. And, and we've seen like, there's enough evidence over and over again that with unity, I don't know. Like, this is just a bigger than like, obviously like little things like crying. got too into soapboxing. Okay.
00:39:04
Speaker
Well, like, it's like, I do, I am looking, it's like, you know, it's like, we can collaborate. we can like, you know, try and work together. We can like form teams. So ah You know, um I'm gonna be trying to do more content creation, more streaming, more figuring out what works, but I am really excited. i think this television show will be so fun. If you know me, i was mean I was a motion picture production major. I majored in making film. I do enjoy that sort of thing. um
00:39:35
Speaker
enjoy projects, so... ah I think it'll be fun. It's a really cool idea. Thank you. There's one reason I a ah took a very snappy weekend and snap because I knew it would kind of go long. But I would love to hear from, I think it is, ah it's Lauren up next.
00:39:57
Speaker
Oh, you said you had a game you're
Game Recommendations & Meta Puzzle Games
00:39:59
Speaker
excited about. tell us There's a game I have been loving. And I think it's probably fairly niche, but I do want to tell you all about it. First of all, I'll say I finished mixtape. It was great.
00:40:10
Speaker
it's It's mostly a visual novel. So like if you're not into that, like if you're expecting something super gamey, it's not that. It's an interactive storytelling thing. But it does that in a lovely way, especially if you grew up in the 90s or 2000s.
00:40:23
Speaker
The aughts. It's about a group of friends graduating high school in the ninety s um It was very charming. Well-written, great music, fun minigames.
00:40:36
Speaker
But also the stakes are extremely low. ah Okay, on to my next game. I heard about this when I was watching a YouTube video about meta puzzles.
00:40:49
Speaker
And it's like when when the puzzle game has deeper layers to it. And kind of discovering those deeper layers is part of the fun of the puzzle game. And this creator compared it to Baba Is You First, which is a puzzle game that I absolutely loved, even though I never got to the meta puzzle.
00:41:07
Speaker
It's an extremely clever game. I will briefly sell it to you if you're into it. it's If you want to feel smart and if you want to play puzzles and be like, whoa, I didn't know games could do this. This is insanely clever.
00:41:21
Speaker
Baba is you. You play a little sheep and there are rules on the board that are actual blocks you can push around. And by changing where the words connect to each other, you change the active rules of the level.
00:41:33
Speaker
So that's that's why it's called Baba is You, because that's the main rule. Baba is You, and that means that you control the sheep named Baba. But there are all kinds of rules in the game that do different things. Ultimately, it's a block-pushing game.
00:41:45
Speaker
And it has very interesting meta puzzles if you get that far. But it's also a brain burner. Like you have to take breaks between your sessions. And that's how this other game has been. It's called Pacret. It's a French name. So that's the only time i'm going to say it like that. Down the Bun Burrows.
00:42:01
Speaker
Pacret down the Bun Burrows is how I would say it as an American. But it is a it is also a block puzzle game. The main thing you're doing is going into underground little levels and trying to capture bunnies.
00:42:14
Speaker
And the bunnies have very set rules, right? Like at ah at if they hit a debt if they hit i a turn, a junction, a T, what am I trying to say? Anyway, they will always turn left unless they can't, in which case they will turn right.
00:42:28
Speaker
ah You know, they they avoid pec rat. And these things are like the rules that take a while to click and you kind of have to like think through them either... um you know, slowly or like, like it's very methodical at first, but later on it becomes very like intuitive. And so I'm down to like much later levels and they're feeling in some ways easier than the early levels. They are harder puzzles, but I have a better understanding of how the bunnies work.
00:42:54
Speaker
And so I can solve them more intuitively instead of like really burning my brain on them. But that's just the first level. The first level puzzle is capture the bunnies. Actually, you could argue the first level puzzle is beat the level, which is just going down the next hole, and that's extremely easy to do. Like, you could arguably beat the entire game in, like, five minutes.
00:43:12
Speaker
But the next level is capture all the bunnies, and then the level after that is, and this is minor spoilers, skip ahead, like, a few minutes if you if you want. But, like, I knew this spoiler going into the game, and it was still just such a treat.
00:43:25
Speaker
Um... later Later on, you get tools, pickaxe and a shovel, that let you connect levels to each other. And then you can chase a bunny from one level into the next level.
00:43:39
Speaker
And if you get bunnies to... so It's called a bun stack. If you get them to land on the same tile, they literally become a stack of bunnies. My biggest stack so far is five.
00:43:50
Speaker
They become a stack of bunnies and they create a baby for every unique combination of bunnies in the entire game. I don't know how big it goes. There's like 150 bunnies and like 700 babies.
00:44:03
Speaker
I'm at 100 bunnies and 80 babies. But it's so fun trying to solve these much more complicated puzzles. How do I get the bunnies from one level to the next level and bring them together in all kinds of unique interactions?
00:44:17
Speaker
Um... And it's such a cool way, like, something I find charming about Metroidvanias is they, like, they they give you a good reason to go back to, you know, to backtrack, and all of a sudden you have new power-ups that let you do new things. um This kind of does that in ah in a different way, where there's, like, a reason for you to go back to the old levels, because now you have a deeper understanding of the game, now you have access to tools that might let you, you like...
00:44:40
Speaker
connect levels that weren't previously connectable um anyway super rewarding super fun there's still a lot that i haven't explored beyond making as many babies as possible um i have been loving it it is so my shit um if block pushing puzzle is not your shit maybe it's not right for you but super duper mine that's my recommendation that's what i'm excited about
00:45:06
Speaker
That's so amazing. That sounds like a real fun time. Well, I was mostly playing the same games that I'm usually playing.
00:45:19
Speaker
Honestly, mostly it was just Snap this week. But I think the homework was, I don't know, talk about some media that you're excited about. So I've got some hot watches about which I am hyped.
00:45:34
Speaker
Ooh. And I tried to pick, I tried to mostly go for more recently released things. And I just wanted to make sure that everybody's got a ah recommendation they could, they can watch no matter which streaming service they might.
00:45:53
Speaker
Oh, this whole time? Cause you told us ahead of time. isa yeah I thought you meant watches. Like on your wrist. I'm like, I didn't know Ben was a watch guy.
00:46:04
Speaker
What is he? I don't even know about watches beyond like like Seiko and like, I've listened to some podcasts, but like, okay, sorry.
00:46:18
Speaker
No, I'm equally excited to hear what you've been watching. Please. Thank you. All right. Well, here's, here are some, some things you can watch. Um, On Netflix, a lot of people have Netflix. Here are some cool things to watch on Netflix.
Streaming Series Highlights & Recommendations
00:46:33
Speaker
Some hot watches, in fact.
00:46:35
Speaker
ah There's an animated program called Strip Law that came out maybe about a month ago, maybe two. I don't know. That show was really fucking funny and it's very um very joke dense. There are a lot of like ah visual gags on screen in in like much the same style as like ah you know how all the a lot of stuff like, you know, in, in the, the opening credits of Bob's burgers where there'll be businesses with funny names or like, uh, in the good place, there'll be businesses with funny names, that kind of thing. But like, there are just like a bajillion of those jokes, but also a lot of spoken jokes and a lot of, uh, just a lot of jokes on a strip law. Highly recommend.
00:47:18
Speaker
Um, it's got great, uh, voice acting. Um, it's got, um, You know, Adam Scott, Stephen Root, um the whoever plays Ava on Abbott Elementary.
00:47:37
Speaker
She's great. I can't think of her name right now. And that's a shame. um Other cool thing to watch on Netflix, ah Janelle James. That's it. Okay.
00:47:49
Speaker
Another cool thing to watch on Netflix, 28 years later, The Bone Temple. I think I mentioned that I saw 28 years later a while ago when it was in theaters on on this podcast. And I loved that movie.
00:48:03
Speaker
I like this one even better. Oh, my gosh. I like I wasn't sure what to expect. I knew that it was directed by Nia DaCosta, who we may remember from the Marvels. a movie that some people didn't like, but I thought was fine. And I was like, I bet this one's going to be fine too. I bet the floor is fine for a movie called 28 years later, the bone temple directed by Nia DaCosta. I'm like, it's gotta be pretty good, right? It's better than pretty good. It's fucking amazing. um You should probably watch that first one first. um
00:48:36
Speaker
yeah I mean, you can, you could even go as far back as 28 days later if you, if you really wanted. Because, spoiler alert, a familiar face does show up at the end of The Bone Temple.
00:48:48
Speaker
But, wow. um Dang. I gotta watch this ah this new Candyman. Well, when I say new, I mean like from a few years ago. Because Nia DaCosta has not directed that many films. i could I could be a completist. And I should, based on how much I enjoyed The Bone Temple.
00:49:05
Speaker
Hoo, baby. Watch that movie. i don't want to I don't want to spoil anything much about it. It's just very... I found it very emotionally affecting. And yeah, yeah. So that that's that's the stuff on Netflix. Those are the hot watches I'm hyped about there.
00:49:22
Speaker
ah Let me shift my focus over to ah probably, i think, a less subscribed streaming service, but one one with a great deal of...
00:49:34
Speaker
prestige-y weight to it. That's right. Apple TV+. plus The home of such shows as Severance and Pluribus and you know other high concept things.
00:49:49
Speaker
Yeah. That one's not high concept. It's also not my cup of tea. so Those other two shows are very much my cup of tea. i like all real Here's the hot new shit on Apple TV+. plus We got Margo's got money troubles. um It's drawn. I mean, it says it's a comedy.
00:50:13
Speaker
It's, it's got some dramatic heft to it. There are serious things that happen. ah You know, I'm, yeah I don't want to spoil too much, but like it's about the the trials and tribulations of ah a young single mother and you know the people in her life and the stuff she does. ah you know She starts in OnlyFans and everyone's very cool and normal about it and people aren't awful to her for terrible reasons. or No, they super are. Yeah, so... they're the agency
00:50:53
Speaker
it's It's a really interesting show. Great cast. um You know, sad things happen on it sometimes. Or tough things. But all in all, it's a pretty good hang. I, you know, I i don't want to i don't want to spoil anything. Just watch the show. It's it's really good. um I guess it's based on a book, which I've also heard good things about. but I'm much more likely to watch the show is the sad truth of the matter than, uh, than read the book. Yo, another thing here on Apple TV plus while we're over there, this one, a little spookier, but I would also kind of technically qualify this one as a comedy. I don't know if the bear is a comedy, which according to the Emmys, it is then anything's comedy, right? Okay. Uh, it's called widow's Bay and, uh, stars,
00:51:47
Speaker
Matthew Reese and some other people. ah You might remember Matthew Reese from being, I don't know, he was on the Americans and ah I don't know what else he's done. I mostly know him from the Americans.
00:52:02
Speaker
It's also got Steven Root who I loved on strip law and also love on this. And mostly I just love Steven Root whenever I see Steven Root. um Great on Barry. great, great everywhere. Anywho, Widow's Bay is spooky and funny.
00:52:18
Speaker
And um yeah, I don't want to spoil too much about that one either, but that one's about like four episodes in. I just, I just saw an episode that knocked me on my ass. I highly recommend that show. I don't know. I highly recommend all the things I'm talking about here. They're all really good. um But now we are pivoting away from Apple TV plus.
00:52:40
Speaker
ah But still, still, I have a preference for comedy. So I'm talking about The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins on Peacock. It's, you know, the latest in a long line of sort of 30 Rock adjacent shows, you know, two years spiritual successors, these these sorts of things. um It stars Tracy Morgan and uh what's his name daniel radcliffe and um erica
00:53:13
Speaker
gosh dang it i i i can't think of her last name it's not that hard people have names i should just learn them erica alexander um Yeah, and that's a show about ah a somewhat washed up professional football player and a washed up director and the they're making a documentary about the football player and it's very silly. Also very high joke density.
00:53:42
Speaker
um and And as far as like 30 Rock Spiritual successors go, you know, from like the same producers and things. I think this is one of the best ones I've seen. And I've, I've seen them all. I've seen your great news is I've seen your, your unbreakable Kimmy Schmitz, your, your, uh, your girls five of us.
00:54:00
Speaker
And, you know, each, each of those shows has its charms and, you know, maybe, maybe, maybe I have a, quibble or a qualm with, with each of them, but, uh, you know, I, I think this is like maybe the best, best one of those.
00:54:15
Speaker
And, uh, yeah, I just, uh, Well, I don't know. I'm going to move on to the next recommendation because i can't I should have organized my thoughts a little better. Ooh, got a couple of stand-up specials I enjoyed recently on HBO Max.
00:54:32
Speaker
Chris Fleming, Live at the Palace. He's also got a Peacock special. Chris Fleming is a one-of-a-kind performer, just ah a very busy mind, but also, oh my gosh, in this new special, his body is very busy. He's fucking dancing and telling jokes the entire time. Just so much dancing.
00:54:53
Speaker
um Really just ah a spectacle to behold. And the other special I wanted to give a shoot o to is Julio Torres color theories.
00:55:04
Speaker
ah Julio Torres is a really interesting thinker and um he's got a lot of thoughts about colors and what they represent and what they're what they're about.
00:55:19
Speaker
And, uh, uh, you know, kinda like colors to him are almost like the colors in magic, the gathering where, where they're, they're, they're about, I don't know.
00:55:35
Speaker
He, he really thinks they, they bring some energies to things. And, uh, yeah, he, he's an odd duck. I don't really know how to describe the the comedy of Julio Torres, but,
00:55:49
Speaker
uh, I like it. And, and you might too, if you like thinking of things in weird ways. Um, and one more thing on a streaming service that I haven't mentioned yet. Um, I think this show is canceled at two seasons and there will not be a third, but there are two seasons of English teacher on Hulu that i highly recommend. Uh, great show.
00:56:14
Speaker
ah very funny ensemble cast. Um, you know, uh, it's, uh, it's nice to, the the tone of the show really works for me. And i
00:56:34
Speaker
it doesn't shy away from like, the unfortunate direction things have taken in, in the world and the culture and stuff. And, uh, the, the characters talk about issues in ways that felt very relatable to me.
00:56:54
Speaker
And, um, yeah, just, uh, just a fun show, uh, very well-written, clever stuff, uh, fun guest stars and all that. ah Those were just the the watches that came to my mind. The if if i were to the serious ones, as as I see it, are Margot's Got Money Troubles and 28 Years Later. So if you feel like having serious feelings about a thing, those those would be the things to watch.
Episode Wrap-up & Reflections
00:57:25
Speaker
But everything else I mentioned is pretty goofy and ah probably will make you laugh at one point or more. And, you know, there are funny things that happen in the bone temple and Margo's got money troubles also. I don't want to it seem like there's no laughter to be had in either of those works.
00:57:47
Speaker
Those are my hot watches. You could only have one. If I could only have one. well if you could only recommend on meant one time you have and like what you want in your I feel like the one that like most knocked my socks off and was like, Oh, well shit. I just, I wish I could make everyone in my life watch this so we could talk about it. I mean, I don't, it's hard to pick one. um I think the series that I'm going to cheat and and do a one series in one movie, ah the series strip law,
00:58:25
Speaker
and the movie 28 years later the bone temple but also you would have to watch 28 years later original flavor uh because they are they're one work yeah i think i've only seen 28 days out of all of those well as far as i'm concerned you can skip 28 weeks and just go right to 28 years because you need to know anything from that middle one there uh anywho that's great but yeah strip law is the the show if if you're only going to watch one show and those episodes they go by real quick they're okay zippy and snippy sweet and i suppose it falls to me to assign a homework for this week next because we have a patent coming up so there won't be we won't do ah the homework next week

Well, I feel like this sets a terrible precedent because I feel like in a perfect world, this would just mean people had twice as long to think about and prepare for secret homework if I announce the assignment today.
00:59:28
Speaker
However, I'm not ready. So we'll just have to make do. Perfect. You'll find out next week what the homework is. Okay, sounds good.

We'd appreciate it. Also, you can interact in all the ways, feed the algorithm, feed our souls. We we read the comments. We swear. That sounded sarcastic, but I meant it.

Speaker
Uh, find out what we think. ah There's, there's a patch on Tuesday, which means there should be new data mind cards, uh, or at the very least more details about, think it's July Spider-Man season, but I expect we'll see August card too. If you want to see what we think, tune in.

If nobody has anything else. I have one quick thing, but there will be more time after that. No, take it! I wanted to apologize to all the people who probably love Horse Gambit.
01:00:47
Speaker
It's just that a lot of the people who love Horse Gambit are also, like, mid-game emoters who, like, think they've won before they've won. And so, like, do tend to, like, draw conclusions like these people are fucking losers from experiences like that.
01:01:01
Speaker
like, you're probably not one of these rude mid-game emoters who thinks they've won a game before they've won the game. So you're probably fine. It just sounded very harsh as I was saying it.
01:01:11
Speaker
That's just... That's just the I want. We understand that plenty of people are playing just because it is a new card. And, like, especially they're getting all the cards and they want to, you know, play with all new cards and there's the mission to play with it.
01:01:27
Speaker
Yeah. Just try it out. Like, yeah, there's no hard feelings even though, like, I'm making in the game. Like, Lauren always says, I always blame... uh the game design designers um over the players for sure yeah maybe you're a v hand enjoyer or maybe you just want to play with your new card while it's strong because if they ever adjust horse gambit it's going to be to make him worse they already did did they oh yeah they did they made him require what six instead of five is that what they did yeah did that do anything no not even a little

Alright, Rhi, what's your thing? Oh no, let's save it for another time. It's outro. Oh no, come on! oh it's a stupid outro. Yeah.
