Cat Behavior and Ben's Weekend

00:00:01
Speaker
how's uh how's your kitty adapting he hasn't eaten yet yeah that's a hard day go by behind me but buddy do you want to make an appearance
00:00:15
Speaker
yes oh yeah yeah who is this amazing kitty
00:00:25
Speaker
Oh, it feels like maybe you ate something. you eat something? Do you have a full tummy? You can tell me. Okay, you won't go. What a cute guy. the best.
00:00:41
Speaker
Alright. Should we get into it? You're up first, Ben. Ah, alright. get to break the news during my weekend snap. The good news.
00:00:52
Speaker
Have you heard the good news about the high evolutionary?

High Evolutionary Deck Strategy

00:00:56
Speaker
oh um this news. Yes. um Well.
00:01:05
Speaker
ah The good news about the High Evolutionary is that I started playing some in 2026. I mean, I've played a little bit of High Evolutionary in the past. I was playing Affliction before it was cool, before Ajax even showed up. I was like, i'm playing High Evo, but just for abomination. What's up?
00:01:23
Speaker
that That was the move. And honestly, that deck did pretty well at the time for me. um Anywho. um But no, ah the situation was i had a bajillion commons and things that had not been upgraded to green. And we all know. Oh, looks like. an OTA just hit. Wonder if we're going to talk about it. Okay. Yeah. um Anywho. Anywho.
00:01:48
Speaker
Yeah. So I don't usually do the auto deck thing, but I was like, well, re does it and re's cool. So that that was like yeah literally thought process. That's what makes me cool. Well, I wanted to this time. i i' I'm like, I didn't feel like building a whole high Evo deck.
00:02:05
Speaker
I was just like, i don't I don't understand the cards. I don't and i don't know like I figured at the very least this would be a fact finding mission. Just play an auto high Evo. High Evo was not the seed card. Point is I got, I got a little bit ahead of myself. Yes. I was upgrading all these commons and things, all these variants. And you know, like, um, I'm not like in, in my early snap days, I was doing this like all the time, staying on top of it. Cause resources were tight, but like resources haven't been tight. Cause, um,
00:02:35
Speaker
You know, I skip a lot of cards and it's not that hard to keep up with the

She-Hulk Variants and Reaching Infinite Rank

00:02:40
Speaker
cards you want. If you're already ahead and already have like most of the cards, it's like, you know, like so many things, it's easier once you're established and stuff. Depends on how picky you are. If you're pretty picky about which cards you take, then yeah, totally.
00:02:56
Speaker
But anywho, I'd let too many variants pile up. And so this process, was like it took like over an hour to get through all my my common variants and things and upgrade them to green. um But anywho, I saw a lovely She-Hulk variant. I have many lovely She-Hulk variants, but like this one was just like, man, I never get to play these lovely She-Hulk variants. So I made auto She-Hulk.
00:03:18
Speaker
And I guess I'll tell you what's in it, even though I did not build it. And I'm not i'm not a habitual auto-decker, but like I said, if it's good enough for my friends, it's good enough for me. And you know what? It was fun.
00:03:31
Speaker
I don't regret it at all. I think I might do it again someday. Probably not this week, but maybe next week. Who can say? So what was in Auto She-Hulk? Also, I liked that it had two hyphens, because there's the auto hyphen and then the She-Hulk hyphen, and I was just like...
00:03:46
Speaker
there's ah It's fun. Anywho, that's Sunspot, Misty Knight, Grandmaster, Lady Bullseye, Scorpion, Warlock, Cyclops, Mother Scotty, High Evolutionary, Abomination, She-Hulk, and Hulk.
00:03:59
Speaker
And I got to use my Cyclops variant that I've wanted to use for a while. It was the Conquest variant a few months ago. It's the one at the list. Yep.
00:04:11
Speaker
It's Trotto Moor. Also, like, the musculature looks psychedelic and cloudy and stuff. um Anywho, if you check the card, you'll see what I mean.
00:04:22
Speaker
ah It's pretty dope. Pretty dope. Pretty dope variant. Also, Evolved Cyclops. pretty Pretty solid card. I wouldn't say, like, a fantastic... A lot of ah lot of the cards in this high Evo deck were not, like, super thrilling me, but, like, somehow it was coming together, and it was winning some games.
00:04:40
Speaker
And I just... ah
00:04:45
Speaker
I had fun with that. That carried me up through several ranks. Oh yeah, I hit infinite. Might it might have buried the lead there. We were wondering last week, would i establish my credibility as a card gamer this month?
00:04:57
Speaker
Or rather, renew my credibility as a card gamer this month? um I don't know. If you're not hitting infinite, don't worry about it. It's its it's a silly thing. And you're probably still good at card games.
00:05:07
Speaker
um But anywho, so yeah, that's one deck I played. But then, when I was in the 90s, and I wanted to make some real progress. I played a familiar deck.
00:05:21
Speaker
I played homework surfer from several weeks ago. It was a secret homework assignment for this deck was designed, I think for conquest, but I just took it onto the ladder because I'm a rebel like that.
00:05:34
Speaker
um I just, I'm out here defying expectations, flouting convention. Honestly, just, Swimming contrary to my own currents. I designed it for Conquest, but no. no it It was fine on that. Oh my gosh. You know what's a pretty good card? Storm Horseman of Famine.
00:05:53
Speaker
It is hard for me to remember not to play America Chavez on one. I still really struggle with that, but you know what? The results cannot be argued with. I feel like it was doing better for me than a lot of my other surfer decks that I like more.
00:06:07
Speaker
um My surfer decks that I like more usually have the sort of they got the surge and the merlin in the beginning and like i i am not disavowing those cards i think they're still super dope and a super dope way to start your surfer day um but yeah for whatever reason storm horseman of famine was just uh helping me put out the the dang numbers you you may i don't know Stick's a cool card, but I just love not playing

Card Preferences and Game Mechanics

00:06:38
Speaker
stick. I'm having so much fun not playing stick. I played stick a little bit when he came out, but I just don't, I don't like the cut of his jib. i don't think he's like fun. I don't think the play patterns are fun. It's just not that cool a card folks. If you love stick, I'm not judging, but like,
00:06:56
Speaker
I just wish they hadn't. I say that about a lot of cards, though. Anywho, other things. I didn't set a timer. You may have noticed. um but You're a rebel like that.
00:07:07
Speaker
ah yeah That's the theme this week. Who, baby? I'm a true blue Maveroo. um ma Maverick was in that deck, I believe. Yes, Maverick was.
00:07:19
Speaker
To represent my contrarian spirit. Carving my own path, as I am wont to do. Um, other things I must mention in my weekend snap list, uh, terrible crisis befall us. Um, well, I don't know if there's anything quite that important.
00:07:37
Speaker
We played some more inscription. i I think, I think we all played some more inscription. i'm pretty sure we're going to find out. That's the homework. Um, I did finally, I've been talking about it for a couple of weeks, but I just haven't had time for me, Jennings. Cause it's kind of a time consuming game. Um, But I did make a little bit of time last night after the move. I was like, let's do this.
00:08:01
Speaker
You and me, Hitler, one more time on impossible difficulty. i went in with a team of three Druid cats. One of them had rabies and couldn't do the standard Druid heel, but...
00:08:14
Speaker
oh It was it was a level four cat. It's unusual that I would bring a level four cat against a house. Is that unusually high or unusually low? Unusually low. That means I aborted the run partway through or I gave it a never stone partway through the run or something. Like if you're working with a level four cat, you're I mean, that that's like an it's a less developed cat.
00:08:36
Speaker
um And those those later levels really do like set them over the top. But this one, Tela had strong genes. You know, if you can remember the cat's name, you might as well say it. Right. So Tela was very solid also because Tela had rabies. Tela had very high strength because a lot of these disorders and diseases.
00:08:56
Speaker
At the very least, they'll give you some sort of double-edged something. Although, if I... Oh, the reason why Tella was level four is because I had to abort that run because Tella had rabies. And if I'd continued the run, Tella would have had diminishing intelligence and then would have gone fully friggin' feral at the end. and But point is, Tella had one more good fight in her.
00:09:20
Speaker
And yeah, we we took it to... Mecha Hitler. And um yeah, just stomped three druids and right one warlock. That was the comp.
00:09:33
Speaker
So druids are pretty good or not warlocks. i I always think they're warlocks. They're necromancers. I get the names of the cat classes wrong all the time. There are 14 of them. It's easy to mess up. That's been your Mugenics Minute in my weekend snap.

Rhi's Snap Experiences and Game Changes

00:09:49
Speaker
And if I think of anything else, I will try not to blurt it out because I've taken too much time already. Hmm. All right. Onto Rhi. How was your week in Snap? And keep it snappy.
00:10:02
Speaker
Okay, I did actually play more Snap this week than I even expected. um good for Snap. And that took me from, yeah, it took me from, like, I hadn't played at all.
00:10:15
Speaker
Like, on the ladder, because I'd been stuck in, like, events or whatever with the time that I'd been trying to be more casual. As Lauren puts it, we we have a more casual relationship with the game than we used to, but we probably still play more than Definitely lot more than casual. Yeah. um than Than real, real casual. But okay. But I did... um Yeah, I went all the way up into the 90s.
00:10:42
Speaker
So like too much sweat. i A lot of the way went there, I did play... um You know, I like my discard. i like my destroy. um So i had to check out Tombstone. And I was finally like in an event. I didn't have to...
00:10:58
Speaker
do because it didn't have a card I needed to get or whatever. So I could finally try that out. And, ah like, honestly, even better than I expected, which I already think I was pretty hype on Tombstone. But I think a really, number one, i think the really important thing um he does is...
00:11:23
Speaker
Let you be less counterable. Let you be less readable, um which particularly saying conquest when you get up against someone with like a Cosmo or an armor or something. um The old days, right before Tombstone. Yeah.
00:11:41
Speaker
Like, you know, you're you're stacking the stuff you want to destroy. It's pretty obvious usually where you want to destroy stuff. And that makes you readable. And ah you have to get real tricky to get around that, right? Killmonger was like your only way to kind of, ah you know, get the get the destroy from another lane. And now, and now you have tombstones. So you have you have options. um You can spread stuff out. So that's huge. And I think especially...
00:12:11
Speaker
For ah conquest and stuff where you know someone has an encounter and now you have more options to try and play around. Pretty good. Pretty, pretty great. It's feeling ah pretty key to destroy, which I kind of thought it would be part of the new regular destroy. Secondly...
00:12:31
Speaker
makes weapon x viable for reals not that like people weren't playing him before but it felt more cute to me but like i went up yeah i went up most of the way i did switch to like venus i just got tired of playing it i uh such a lot of the way i i ran up on um this tombstone destroy with weapon x and man is it fun when weapon x gets really big um And it just used to, you know, we've talked before about why Weapon X felt so non-viable and like destroy or like tougher, you know? And who sort Tombstone really helps with that. That and Moira.
00:13:13
Speaker
Moira. Moira. Why can't I say it? Moira. Okay, I just gotta stop trying to say it. Okay. um Is she, like, duplicating your hand? ah You know, that effect kind of really mitigates that problem you have of, like, i need stuff to either destroy or want to be destroyed.
00:13:36
Speaker
um This get this, you know, so it's it's cool to finally see a different kind of destroy shaping up destroy. It's felt very stagnant. And it's but not that people weren't like doing different things, you know, Dormammu Nimrod.
00:13:52
Speaker
There's stuff. Dormammu is the... I don't know why I'm so anti-Dormammu for no Rhi. Every time I see it, I'm like, yeah, whatever. I don't know why. I don't know what it is about Doral. I play Galactus first steps. i play like I don't know. I play cards that I consider missing.
00:14:13
Speaker
I think that all the cards should live on the card. That's what I think. That's that's why I'm... not i don't know if that You don't like the rituals? I like cards. Aggressively heavy Merlin player.
00:14:26
Speaker
i like cards that generate cards like a Kate Bishop or a Merlin, but like cards that like have other cards that you have to like, I don't know. I don't know. I'm just, I'm a little skeptical. You don't have to summon him.
00:14:39
Speaker
like i just I never vibed with Agamotto. Never vibed with Thanos. Oh, I love Agamotto. they They bring too many cards with them from the start. That's what I think.
00:14:51
Speaker
I'm like, sure, we can introduce cards like one or two at a time after you've hit the board or whatever, but like It feels burdensome to me, the opponent, that I have to remember what all your friggin' rituals do. i have to remember what all your stones do this year. You know, like, night at least Agamotto has stayed the same.
00:15:11
Speaker
But, yeah. And I guess the rituals of Dormammu have largely stayed the same. Maybe they changed one of them once or something. They got cheaper. Mostly, they've been mostly the same, I think.
00:15:24
Speaker
But still, hate him. Hate his style. Hate the cut of his jib. I love Normamu. I just think he's super duper telegraphed and that's not a fun way to play him. think that's what it is. I think I respect people I read very well. Like you're playing a very readable deck because I dislike playing that kind of... I dislike having to play my deck not knowing if they're going to have the counter because i know it's very readable what I'm trying to do. yeah. Yeah.
00:15:53
Speaker
yeah I think Dormammu is fun as long as I'm not playing it in such a linear way. If you haven't played it, maybe maybe I would play it and suddenly one day I'd be like, that's it. and kind helps us You know, when when it's time for you to have your own high evo renaissance, can you can play Dormammu. I've had many high evo renaissances. near okay You know, guess like it when they play him with werewolf and they just want to the werewolf. That's cute. I respect that. I respect that.
00:16:24
Speaker
I'm sorry for interrupting. What did you have, Rhi? No, it's okay. um That's pretty much like the... I just wanted to follow up because like I actually played a good bit of Tombstone. And i like and maybe, yeah like I said they're you're right. There's been Durer Mamu and other decks. But I guess my personal go-to destroy tech hadn't changed in a long time. or just Classic destroy has been pretty stable. That's what I mean. Classic destroy. So...
00:16:54
Speaker
ah Yeah, this has been a fun shake-up. Then I climbed up on Venus deck I shared this week. Eventually I did get inspired to cook and I just finished the deck today.
00:17:06
Speaker
have time tiing them eventually i did get inspired ah to cook and i just like finished the deck today hey I'm like, let me, let me get, okay, spoilers, I rage quit. Like, after first time, I'm like, oh, let me, I haven't, I didn't play Snap at all yesterday. Let me get in a couple games ah before the podcast today. and I was like, oh, what was this? I was like, oh, yeah, Late Night Rhi started making a Venus Submariner Clea, like Marvel Boy Locketing Deck. That sounds like a re-deck. Yeah, and I did it because i was playing my Venus for fun and for profit, and then I ran into Lockheed, and i'm like, I want play Lockheed. And I'm like, okay, well, we're switching that, and what if we also I'd seen people playing Clea, and I'm like, that also sounds fun. And I'd gotten Submariner, which I hadn't, like
00:17:58
Speaker
done that much with. So, ah yeah. And i I like finished it off today. I had left it with like one card, you know, so I'm like, what's this? What's this caution? You know, it's the hallway with all the caution tape. And it's like, what? It's like, oh, yeah, your past self left this for you to find. ah Apparently couldn't decide on the last card.
00:18:18
Speaker
and then oh You got 11 twelfths of a deck? Yeah! So today I finished i picked a card. um you know i finished and I got in to play it And it's ah is it Elysium that makes all cards?
00:18:34
Speaker
Discounted by one? Yeah. Yeah. So, and I have, like, Submariner. So it's, like, I don't even need to wait. And have Marvel Boy. Oh, that's And I got Clea. I got Jeff and Clea on turn one.
00:18:47
Speaker
And, like, what? And it's just, like, yeah. And it's, like, Spark and Submariner's pop and he makes another Submariner. have, like, all these frames of Faultine. And I'm, like, yes.
00:18:58
Speaker
And I was so excited. And then they it's turn three. They have Placid. nothing it is turn three don't say no it's turn two i'm sorry i forgot because elysium sometimes you know sometimes you get you think it's turn you don't realize oh absolutely all the time or you don't yeah you're like you play the final turn and then there's one more turn yeah it's like your energy yeah you get confused sometimes i think it's turn five when in fact it is turn six I've had that too. Yeah, that's bad. Many times. Right? The energy throws you off because you're just like playing on autopilot. It's so much bigger.
00:19:38
Speaker
Yep. Okay, so I think it was just turn two, and then on turn three or whatever, i like, i I snapped them because they hadn't played anything, and I was, like, sparkling all over the board. It was very exciting. And, okay, and so they didn't play anything. don't, I feel like they didn't play turn because here's what they did.
00:19:57
Speaker
Here's the exact cards in the sequence. like They played ah Mother Ascani. Maverick.
00:20:08
Speaker
Maverick. Prodigy. Oh, God. Rude. Grandmaster. Yep. Stomped me. Stomped me. And I was so far up.
00:20:19
Speaker
I mean, not like so far, but I had like, had good, I was like off three lanes. had momentum on your side. They had like 50, they were at 56 or something. And I was like,
00:20:30
Speaker
30 to 40. You know what I mean? Because the problem is I had all these flames of Faltine and they didn't have anything on the board because Lemuria happened so i couldn't I couldn't hit their Maverick.
00:20:43
Speaker
Dang it. Mavericks. Mavericks, escape the flames of all the spells. Okay. ah there's Stupid technology. Okay. But, and it was devastating. I had been so, it I had just put this deck together. I was really excited to play Submariner. And then like, yeah, like the buff salad points comes down and i just get like stomped. It's like, okay.
00:21:09
Speaker
And they definitely just closed the game and was like, not today. Yeah. yeah That's brutal. Oh, man. ah Okay, and I say that because that's our lead-in to our OTA discussion because the first change up is Mother Ascani. Yeah. Main culprit. I am happy for this change. She is changing um from she used to be a four three on reveal. Give the leftmost card in your hand plus 2 power minus 1 cost. Then copy it to now a 4-4 on reveal.
00:21:45
Speaker
Copy the leftmost card in your hand. Give the copy minus one cost and plus two power. Oh, this does weaken her a lot. And I'm happy it. Yeah, they did a real nerf this time. This is a big one because a lot of people are multi-procking Mother Ascani, which means you're like stacking the discounts and can't anymore. Honestly.
00:22:07
Speaker
Even I've been doing it. I mean, it's fun to absorbing mana. Oh, me too! Yeah, we've all been doing it. But like, my gosh, this nerf is at least real. That last one was such a joke. We took a.0 power. She was 4-4. Now she's 4-3. Do you remember that? Because I barely do.
00:22:25
Speaker
Oh my gosh. The only thing I remember was how stupid it was. Yeah, it's, um, I'm so, like, will miss, I had a lot of fun copying, like, Elsa and stuff, but, like, this is too much, like, I wanted to do fun stuff, not, like, the super, like, powerful stuff that's no fun, so i I'm happy to see her.
00:22:48
Speaker
Like, you know, people can have a reason to play, like, free again stuff again, right? Do we think she still sees any play? Yes, probably still. Oh, Mother's Connie? Definitely.
00:23:00
Speaker
she's not like the premier card anymore. like that that was ah That was a very strong effect. this is This is a huge hit. And when people are like, oh, they still haven't hit Horse Gambit. like This is a huge hit to Horse Gambit.
00:23:12
Speaker
um I suppose. And it's a big hit to Carter combo, but I also think both of those decks are going to be fine. Yeah, they are. yeah they are This is where I have beef beef with the Mother Ascani change, is it does enable so many fun, cool things. But of course, she takes the hit because she's enabling ridiculous things also. And so all the fun, cool things have to get worse. And...
00:23:36
Speaker
Like, I get it. This is probably where it needed to go anyway. But like, I also would have been happy to see them figure out how to hit Carter combo and horse gambit first and see how that went. Well, I think they've tried to hit horse game, but they're just not very good at it. And they don't they don't seem to really want to.
00:23:55
Speaker
Yeah, that's what I think. Like, they hate Spider-Man 2099 and they love Gambit. hmm.
00:24:04
Speaker
it does make me happy when i play big decks though and they can't i can't take out my power
00:24:14
Speaker
you want to do the next one or rotate or what um you know uh i don't know like right super giant went down a point nobody cares and then and we all love super giant we got feelings don't we i mean like But it's a point compared to the next one, which is the Luke Cage change. That's true. thinking Supergiant, I think.
00:24:35
Speaker
The main thing about Supergiant is, like, if you had told people a year ago that Supergiant was taking a nerf, like, what? I just agree. I feel like there were plenty of, like, content creators and whoever were, like, underslept. People just didn't want to figure out how to play, you know? yeah Exactly the reason that she was a good killer.
00:24:56
Speaker
Also, there weren't as many decks that got absolutely wrecked by Supergiant as there are today. Like, you know, Twos and Storm kind of changed the game and in turn ah kind of changed things for Supergiant because, wow, she just wrecks those those end to turn chumps.
00:25:16
Speaker
And we used to never play five cost cards because they all sucked. So, like, yeah. Yeah. And they're more crucial. You brought up Luke. let's Let's do it. Let's talk about they finally reworked him a second time.
00:25:29
Speaker
But who could have predicted that they'd do it this season, this very month?

Card Reworks and Nerfs Discussion

00:25:34
Speaker
Oh, I did. During our ranking episode. Before Big Scorp? Well, yeah, we we were rating the cards and I i said it.
00:25:43
Speaker
i i don't I don't remember, but i I felt a little silly saying it because like we've been expecting it for so long, but I was like, this is the month. They're doing it Read it. Read the change, Ben.
00:25:55
Speaker
Oh, all right. It's not a change I anticipated. The change I would have they thought would be at other locations. Let's see. But no.
00:26:05
Speaker
Honestly. Bit of a sidegrade here, because being two-cost is cool. And that's right, new Luke Cage is two-cost. He's a 2-2. Ongoing, your front row cards can't have their power reduced. Still very playable in my eyes. Honestly, I'm more excited to play this version of Luke Cage than I was the previous one.
00:26:23
Speaker
I get angry at three costs with bad stats, but two costs, you can have whatever kind of stats. I don't care. Is cards better for some decks? Yeah. i don't know if you want to protect your card. I don't know if that deck can afford it.
00:26:37
Speaker
like Oh, no. I don't know if I'll play it there. I don't think I will. but But like there are some decks that like they're fine. They're fine having only their front row protected.
00:26:49
Speaker
right Yeah, i this was a good... i have been really nervous about how this was going to change. I honestly didn't think they would do a good job.
00:26:59
Speaker
Mostly based... on history yeah reality the evidence you've been presented with in the past this gives an interesting like it i think it's a good comment it's kind of like it protects like half your cards You'd only be in so many places at once. Yeah, that's true.
00:27:22
Speaker
But you know what Like, half the space is protected. And the first cards... Because I kind of agree. I understood he was a one counter to, like, all of Affliction, which there's so much Affliction now.
00:27:36
Speaker
um Cards out there. So I guess I kind of understood. But I really... i didn't want them to nerf him so hard we wouldn't see Affliction. But this still feels like... a meaningful counter and as you were saying Ben being the two cost makes him so much more play like the drop from three to two huge huge huge I'm a little worried we're gonna realize that this was just a buff I think it's a buff overall it's gonna depend on the deck it depends on the matchup you know if you can like Hit some Omega Sentinel on your opponent's back row and then drop big Scorp. You know, maybe.
00:28:10
Speaker
Maybe that is it a way that this Luke Cage has taken a hit. But ah i don't know. i This has got to be a wait and see. It seems okay, but that price discount is big. I really want to see luke Cage just not be retroactive. I think that that is part of why he's so dang strong is he can come down on turn six and just undo it all.
00:28:32
Speaker
Yeah, make him show up on two now that he costs two. That's my feeling. And also, like protecting the front row is so much better than protecting the back row. It's like, that's just this is still covering probably two-thirds of your cards in most games, because like we're not always filling every lane. like there's ah There's a reason I'm always picking up those fill every location bounty, and it's because no one else wants to do them, because, yeah.
00:28:55
Speaker
I'm out here brooding and absorbing Manning. like those ones, I have a deck I play just for those. Well, it's just my everyday. it's yeah
00:29:07
Speaker
Can I say we're done with Luke Cage that I feel the complete opposite of the next change? I was like, oh, what's up next? Spider-Man 2099. I hate change. I hate this change too. It's so stupid. just like why okay Unforgivably stupid.
00:29:25
Speaker
Why do they keep reading it, Lauren? They're going to keep nerfing him. You want me to read it? they're playing him Yeah. You haven't read one yet. Okay. You're right. You're right. Spider-Man 2099. He goes from five, nine. First time this moves to any location, destroy an enemy card there.
00:29:39
Speaker
Four, five. Now movable once. This is, you know, obviously addressing the at may stuff. When this moves to a location, afflict an enemy card there with minus three power.
00:29:51
Speaker
bo Okay, I will say my hate first because it is short. I played 2099 in multiple decks, and I get he was wacky, but he could pull off meaningfully sometimes, and he felt like a unique card that I wanted to play with Red Wing and do interesting things with. The new card feels like like what we've talked about, feels like Marvel Snap Swap to me. And it's it's akin to Spider-Punk. So it just takes them from being unique. to It's worse. Yeah.
00:30:25
Speaker
Spider-Punk trades for one power. It's bad bad Spider-Punk. It's just bad. Like, it's a 4-8 if you adjust for the movable. And then, like, you get three points per move. And that's that's new Vulture rate. And new Vulture is a very bad card.
00:30:40
Speaker
And also, new Vulture can hit the board on turn one. You get to move him several times. This guy shows up on four, and no, no, it's just bad. It's so bad. Why do they keep making Spider-Man 2099 worse? They have only ever nerfed this card, a card that was never popular, never overpowered. It's so weird. Every couple years, they're like, ah let's nerf him one more time just to make sure nobody ever plays this fucking loser.
00:31:05
Speaker
I don't know. like I've played Spider-Man 2099. I liked the 4-6 version that killed something when it moved. It was in my first Infinity Conquest winning deck, that very first Conquest. Like, oh, man. i've I've got like, I inked it out. Like, I've played this card. I loved this. I loved, past tense, this card.
00:31:23
Speaker
And like, they just keep making it worse. And I don't see why it's a cool. card It was a cool card. It is no longer a cool card. Well, if it said, if it said afflicted enemy card there with minus six power,
00:31:36
Speaker
It would be playable, but I still would hate this card because I think Rhi's criticism is the most severe offense here. is They took a card that did something unique unique and it doesn't anymore. And now it's just buff slash afflict slop. And i I get it. I get that power is the number one most important number in Marvel Snap. It's how you win lanes. it's you know it it is It is the thing that we're trying to get. We're trying to get more power than our opponent. That's the core of the game.
00:32:05
Speaker
But a cool way to do that drawing a card. Yeah, let's have cards that do things. Yeah, yeah. Point number two. If they really needed a movable forecast, Vision was right there. Right there!
00:32:21
Speaker
And then his text would matter. Yeah, see, man, that is... I feel like that really off offends you and i Lauren. the The fact that they put that text on a five cost. Yeah. Like, I'm fine fine if there's cards you have to ramp out to do the cool thing. That's fine. But, like, Vision is such a weird example because he's, what, Series 1, Series 2? Yep. This is a core card.
00:32:46
Speaker
Oh, is that why does the Forticus make him too powerful at low levels? Lower his power. Make him like a 4-6. Yeah. That would be an interesting card.
00:32:59
Speaker
And that would still be good with Aunt May. A 3-8 that's movable multiple times? That's fine. Like, I don't think it makes Aunt May necessarily a very strong deck, but... Honestly, if Sam Wilson isn't enough to make Aunt May good, I don't think anything is enough to make Aunt May Hey, that's the next... She's putting up from the power, right? She's going... Same ability going from 2-3 to 2-4. I have not played her. I don't have her.
00:33:23
Speaker
Either of you? I have played her extensively. The stat line was not the problem. Yeah. Yeah. For the record, I think they could have given Spider-Man 2099 movable and kept his destroy and it would have been fine.
00:33:36
Speaker
And then he could have been the 5 cost movable and Vision could have been the 4 cost movable. agree. Although i don't I don't know if I like that. I still don't think that would be a great card.
00:33:50
Speaker
ah But it would have been a better card than five It would be less offensive. Yeah. Um... Okay, movement, then also Agent 13 is the, another one that's just getting a single point of power. I saw this and I was just like, yeah, it makes sense with the power creep, which like, it's just like the more power creep happens, the more the other cards have to be, the more now this Agent 13 going to 1-3 means some other card eventually is going have to also go because everything's just got to follow the upcrete. But I can't disagree with it because like Agent 13 feels very poor in comparison a lot of times to other cards. that When I see Agent 13, think of someone just really wants to play her because they like her, they have a variant they like, or they're a low collection player is the right thing.
00:34:40
Speaker
Also, a rare instance of the numbers now thematically fitting after the buff. Yep. Agent 13, one, three. Usually they ruin the cute things. They made it cute. I have a lot of good Agent 13 variants. I should pull her out.
00:35:03
Speaker
but She should be a good card. I played her a lot in my first month or two of Snap because i just like seeing new cards that I had no access to. like Yeah, it was so exciting. I have very fond memories of Agent 13.
00:35:17
Speaker
Oh, you have more. Do you have opinions on the Lady Bullseye? Okay, the next card getting just a ah plus one. i haven't played Lady Bullseye. I've been playing Lady Bullseye just this week.
00:35:31
Speaker
I just started playing Lady Bullseye. She's pretty cool. Pretty fun. I like her. But she's nerfed overall in this OTA because the plus one power is a smaller buff than the Ascani nerf.
00:35:45
Speaker
Oh, that's a point. That's a point. But i I prefer to evaluate cards outside of their interaction with Mother's Day. Outside of context?
00:35:55
Speaker
Well, not entirely outside of context, but like... but Outside of the context of cards that we knew were going to get nerfed hard, you know, like I try not to like, you know, like we all knew Mother Iskani was riding for a fall. I mean, like yeah but they could have done it a few weeks ago. They moved her to four, three. What was that? Still not over that. But um but yeah, I'd like Lady Bullseye. I'm going to keep playing Lady Bullseye without Mother Iskani. Honestly, there are in a deck where you've got Lady Bullseye and Mother Iskani, like the the deck that I was playing this week.
00:36:26
Speaker
There are so many better Mother Ascani targets than Lady Bullseye. If you were Mother Ascani-ing Lady Bullseye, you were probably doing it wrong, and you should have had something else on the left side of your hand.
00:36:40
Speaker
Okay, um so Triton is getting two points of power from three four to 3-6, still with the ability, if you forgot what Triton does, on reveal, give the last character each player played last turn plus three power. I have played Triton exactly once because I got him from Arashem, and I had to.
00:37:03
Speaker
So much power. i had so much energy that it was like, why not? But also I knew it would benefit me more for reasons of context. But like, yeah, yeah ah that's my, that's my experience with Triton. I've never felt the urge to, you you not even with Namor or anything. I think he's good now.
00:37:25
Speaker
You think so? yeah I mean, three sticks is fine. yeah I'll try him now. Okay. Okay. Good as a stretch. playable. Yeah.
00:37:36
Speaker
I will try to play something next week and we can come back to this and we'll check in on Triton next week, I hope. Luna Snow, right? Or not next week, two weeks later. That gives That's mutual, yeah.
00:37:48
Speaker
Yeah, that gives a mutual advantage. can't believe they were so cautious on Triton. It was ridiculous. Like, you could see from a mile away that this card was not all like... They're like, Stick is fine, but Triton is OP!
00:38:03
Speaker
ridiculous um the one thing i'm disappointed with ah is i wish they had buffed his ability like if we're gonna make a card better make it better at the cool thing it does that's unique i agree you think it should have gone to plus four you do like three four plus four you know what i like though then triton's power is four hands out another four and, uh, you know, and, and then ah a four that that's, that's three of a thing.
00:38:31
Speaker
That's a triton three. Oh, wait, what's the third one? ah The four on Triton, the four on your thing, the four on their thing. fours. It's a three pronged four thing. Absolutely!
00:38:49
Speaker
Why aren't we designing Marvel Snap? I don't know. I'm just kidding. I suspect would do a better job. That's how I feel about Finally.
00:39:00
Speaker
Yeah, we have one last change. Who wants it? Not me. what else we I'm jumping in there. Wait, do we have one last change? Oh, it's not another. The card has been turned into character on the following cards to make them more satisfying to play in the presence of skills. I love the explanation. To make them more satisfying to play in the presence of skills.
00:39:22
Speaker
Well, they changed the game. they They made it into a spells game. So it is. Yeah, finally. Acknowledge what they've done to the game. Okay. Anyway, Gonshu, Silver Samurai, the first Ghost Rider, Tarantula, aka Rancho, Boomerang, Spider-Man, Noir, Apocalypse, Celestial's Chosen, doctor Octopus, one of the cards that used to have fun numbers but doesn't, and Silver Sable.
00:39:55
Speaker
Thank goodness for Silver Sable, assuming that what it means is she skips to the top character. I don't know. I haven't actually played her

Terminology Changes and Design Critique

00:40:02
Speaker
yet. but yeah That's what I would assume as well. That is still significant to undo that nerf that she has eaten, where she just whiffs if your opponent has a skill.
00:40:12
Speaker
That's got to be what it means, right? I hope so. I mean, otherwise they're not helping her. i mean, if it... Otherwise it's no change, right? rezzs it's already yeah It would also fizzle, so yeah.
00:40:25
Speaker
yeah I really hope it means topmost character and not just they have to have a character on top of their deck and we just changed the words. um This is great. The only card I can think of who still needs this treatment is Morph.
00:40:38
Speaker
Also, there are some locations that could still use this treatment. I'm looking at you, Vormir. You're saying, and oh oh. And this talk one the sloppy one. Yeah, Castle Zemo. Okay, but I like that wizards can cheat death.
00:40:53
Speaker
Yeah, I kind of like, too, that
00:40:57
Speaker
i was going to say, I kind of like, too, that you can use skills to deal with those locations. but yeah But I'd also understand if they changed it to character. Like, I would totally get that. And that's an argument for, like, that's why you run cheap little ones or zeros in your deck to deal with those locations.
00:41:10
Speaker
But also, it's it's one more thing that makes me feel kind of vulnerable when I don't have Merlin. Because Merlin just, like, Merlin's there for so many problems and situations. Especially those particular locations.
00:41:27
Speaker
Yeah. All right. All right. Yeah. I think we did it. The OTA. We got through it. Lauren. We can snap. here We can snap.
00:41:38
Speaker
I'll talk about my we can snap in a sec. I want to I want to extend the OTA conversation just a little bit. I already ranted about it a bit in, you know, when we covered these cards like like Spider-Man 2099 where I'm just like, why are we increasing? Why are we increasingly leaning into Marvel snap slop? And I think.
00:41:57
Speaker
it it's very likely this is just the new regime, right? Like Glenn's gone. There's the new person in charge. I don't necessarily want to say it's 100% on. Is it Michael majors, whoever it is, who's, who's the top person right now. I know Michael majors is up there. I just don't know if he's like the number one on balance. Um,
00:42:16
Speaker
There's been some like strategy change and and you know, maybe it actually predates Glenn's departure and and he already wanted the game to go this way. Who knows? But there seems clear that there has been a shift in strategy, not just in making cards more complicated or whatever, but also in like.
00:42:34
Speaker
There's just so many cards that are unambitious that main thing they do is either buff or afflict and that that they they they just don't do things. I want cards that do things. And, you know, I have to acknowledge like there there's a handful this this month. There's Sinister Six and Unplayable Boomerang Unplayable Boomerang who I mean really is just buffing and afflicting, but he bounces himself. That's something mechanism is interesting.
00:43:03
Speaker
Yeah. Or like Spider-Man brand new day also is kind of like half. we raised like You can't hear me anymore. Oh, for, it for a very long time. rose Yeah.
00:43:13
Speaker
Oh no. Well, hopefully it's good on my end. And if not, sorry, listener, was saying Spider-Man brand new day is another one who's like half. Okay. Cause like double move is like, that's kind of cool. Even though it shits all over vision, but, but then he's just handing out buffs.
00:43:26
Speaker
Yeah, that too. For sure. Um, Shoot, who else is? Oh, Tombstone. Tombstone's the other card this month alongside Sinister Six, who's like, yes, we have a card who does something! Give me more cards that do things! And Tombstone's exciting, even though he does something that we already have! He just does it in a slightly different way. Like, i don't know, I just wish we got more pieces that did things. This is me as a Johnny. I want i want card interactions. And it's been so rough.
00:43:52
Speaker
The combination of cards that aren't interesting and cards that aren't strong. They're, like, so timid in the cards they release. That's it. That's my rant. I wish that they were a little more ambitious on new card releases, both in the text and in the stats.
00:44:08
Speaker
You know what I think? I was thinking while you were saying, I'm like, bet the designers are technically limited. They're like, we can't, we don't have the capacity to create and test new things, new abilities into snaps. So you need to use the things, the code we already have that works.
00:44:31
Speaker
And I mean, one, it's it's It's like, yeah, that, like, I don't want to put that on the designers when I bet, I bet they're being put under those constraints.
00:44:42
Speaker
I mean... But at the same time, like you you were saying with Tombstone, there are ways to, like, put these abilities together that at least still do something interesting to the game, you know? And ah plenty of them don't feel like that. so Like, even if they are limited to just sticking together modules of things they've already made and, like, already have seen how to do, like, I still think they could be doing better, even if they're just like making misfit toys or whatever.
00:45:14
Speaker
Yeah. Maybe, and maybe, like, the last couple of timid months on card text are, like, well, before then, we had the new text in objective, which I think is kind of a failure of a keyword, but we'll talk about that another time. Absolutely. And then next month, we have quick draw, and not just, oh, it's a new ability, but also, like, the cards next month, actually, there's a handful of them that do things. There's there's still a good amount of buff slot, but...
00:45:41
Speaker
um you know Thanos and Death and is it just those two who are actually like doing something I don't have them all memorized yet but at least it's ambitious yeah so maybe maybe it's just that we're in a lull but I don't know it wasn't that long ago we were getting more cards per month right like when we were getting the direct to series 4 cards and some of those were really interesting cards some of them yeah And now we're getting fewer cards of less quality.
00:46:14
Speaker
That's where I'm just like, what's happening? But I think that some of the damage is already done with the the months of many, many releases. like I think we're still feeling the impact of that. and like That could be. They did spit out a whole bunch of designs. and Yeah. I think they're working, like what, six to nine months ahead? Something like that?
00:46:38
Speaker
So I don't know far ahead. That's honestly not that far ahead in card game design. and I don't know how far ahead of time something gets locked in. It might be like on the six month end of things where where things are are close to locked in. You know, they could still do like OTA style changes at that point.
00:46:53
Speaker
I don't know. I just, I hope, I hope that, they do better it's like it's i understand ah every every now and then there's going to be a week where it's just like the card isn't for me it's not super interesting it doesn't really open up any new interactions or it's just not an archetype i get i like that's totally understandable but like when it's a week after week after week it's just like oh i need i need something to keep me interested in this game all the ltgms are the same thing over and over again like my gosh give me something new to play with
00:47:24
Speaker
Like I understand that the core game is good. And so like it can ride on the core game for a long time, but also snap is very much like a constant grind of novelty. There's always something new to do. And the OTAs do that. And the, and the patches do that, but it's like, it has to be more aggressive. yeah i want to feel these changes.
00:47:44
Speaker
Yeah. Also dear listener. I know if you do want to engage with all those LTGMs, you should absolutely go to the fourth location and read all the things that Scott and Lauren put out because they put so much work into it. And I understand why Lauren has to play these LTGMs so that she can write said articles about them and everything. But like you, listener, I would like you to know that you don't have to do that. Just give them the 800 I'm so much happier for it. Oh my gosh. I love playing regular snap and not...
00:48:18
Speaker
doing whatever high voltage bullshit is out this week is sanctum showdown the only mode that you like you'll play for fun uh no i do sometimes play like when i you know i enjoyed arena grande yeah i i gave sanctum surge some some chances um i have I have sometimes enjoyed ah a regular Grand Arena. in fact Actually, I kind of like Grand Arena regular, and sometimes when when and when I get a cool idea and I want to build a deck for like something, I'll i'll like run with that. But like I don't always feel inspired every time, and I like knowing that I can you know pay 800 gold and not worry about it.
00:49:04
Speaker
Also, I liked the Grand Arena when I got to play a Safety Blade and a Loren deck. That was cool. if i if it had been a less busy time in my life, I would have spent a little more time doing that because like and just like I like that they included my friend's decks in that one. That that was cool.
00:49:21
Speaker
um ah like I'm not like against ever engaging with an LTGM, but like feel no obligation, dear listener. You can can still be very plugged into Snap and doing Snap stuff, playing games of Snap with the cube at the top, and you push it and it makes the stakes high.
00:49:38
Speaker
And yeah, I don't know. If that if that makes you happier than high voltage whatever, ah high voltage 17 maybe. I don't know how many times they've high voltageed us, but It really might be that high. I'm out.
00:49:54
Speaker
You know, I i touched the the sparking console too long. I've been zapped. um Yeah. maybe Maybe I was standing in the water, like in Bioshock. Maybe that's how it happened. But I'm fried. I can't i can't do high voltage no more.

LTGMs and Challenging Decks

00:50:15
Speaker
I mean, I've also found myself skipping it um just because I'm like, oh, finally somewhere I don't have to get the card. I used to when I played a lot more snaps. Like, oh, free variants. And was like, oh, thank goodness. Like I can finally maybe try and do some ladders.
00:50:32
Speaker
Also, I do tend to get the card most stuff.
00:50:37
Speaker
I did want to amend. I do always play Deadpool's Diner because it's close enough to real snap, even though the snapping doesn't matter and it does frustrate me in that way. But like the rewards are generally good enough and the bottomless prizes. And I get to practice regular snap with like, you know, the same rules. And like, I don't feel like I'm wasting my time as much when it's at least. Yeah. Aside from the quirky locations, it's pretty much the same. Yeah.
00:51:07
Speaker
ah Okay, randomly, before we move on, you made me think of it when you mentioned fourth location. Random plug. I don't know what this article was, but I just read it. Scott wrote one about, now, if you, like me, ah use the shocker in the shocker buggy, that's what it's called. I don't even know the shocker buggy variant, because it's clearly the best shocker variant. He has an article about the comic, the history of it. And i didn't i even't know it. and i it's It's amazing. So will i will I will put it in show notes. I think that's on Snap Fan. but well'll Oh, is it? It was an old Scott article. you shared Yeah, it was a good one. I've read it also.
00:51:57
Speaker
I think I did also. Imagine that. ah I just wanted this i want to say I finally got it. The the ah clip that I talked about last time, it took 265 games.
00:52:11
Speaker
incredible Bravo. I think I had like 13 wins, and probably half of those were like my opponent retreated, right? It was a very, very bad deck. Like most of my clip decks, they can at least pull like, you know, 20% or something little bad like Yeah.
00:52:26
Speaker
This deck was just dog shit. And wasn't such a cool combo... If it wasn't such a cool combo, I would never chase it that hard. But but I thought it was cool enough.
00:52:37
Speaker
yeah That was so many games, Lauren. Yeah. Now, past past combos I've chased, didn't I wasn't using a tracker, so I don't know how many games those took. okay But I would say all of them took less, except possibly one.
00:52:54
Speaker
So, you know, that's... There are very few combos that I think are cool enough to chase that hard, but I did it. And that was, that was thrilling. There was actually like, i don't know, 30 minutes before I finally landed it where I had one that was like, okay, I have two 50 fifties. If either of them go my way, I will do it. And sure enough, pizza slice,
00:53:18
Speaker
went on Viper instead of Strife. ah and they and then wait no And then Strife came over, or Venom, whoever, yeah. Then Venom came over, and he's the same power as Strife, so it's 50-50, which one Viper sends? And she sends the wrong one. and was heartbreaking. um My wife heard my my oh lament my lamentations and my rejoicing that night.
00:53:43
Speaker
Yeah, anyway, that's just, I just wanted to tell that story. 264
00:53:49
Speaker
So many games. so that's me That's what's great about like ah the simultaneous like reveal of SNAP, like the drama of every SNAP moment and over six turns. Also, that's a lot of games with a deck that's not like winning. I don't know. i used to I used to play that many games like...
00:54:12
Speaker
Man, I don't know. But like with with decks that were doing well, because I wanted to like drive up the numbers. I was like, so I think I think I can raise the average even more if I keep like, you know, like that that used to be my.
00:54:24
Speaker
Yeah, I used to live for that to to get 265 games with my Grand Arena Torch deck. I've done that, but that's fun. And that like that deck does well. Yeah.
00:54:35
Speaker
This was a rough one. I was losing my mind. With like a 4.9% rate or something. To be clear, I did this over like eight or nine days. Something like that. So, you know, the pain was spread out.
00:54:49
Speaker
But you don't even get those like little dopamine hits along the way. None whatsoever. You gotta like have your eye on the prize and only the prize. Only the finish line. That's that's a that's a real commitment.
00:55:03
Speaker
Yeah, well, it makes my my content unique because I'm willing to do that.
00:55:09
Speaker
don't know. You're an inspiration across the nation. Probably... Across all the nations. We're international like that. Yeah, that's true. On to our side quests. First up, and only this week, Secret Homework. Secret your Homework this week was assigned by me in a moment of very deep preparation. I had planned ahead and we decided that we were going to talk about Inscription even more because we had such a good time.

Inscription Gameplay and Mods

00:55:37
Speaker
ah Let's just real quick review. like did you get Did you get to play it more this past week?
00:55:43
Speaker
I finished it. Yeah, I remember you said. Exciting. Okay, me, I know I'm the the least the least far along. I did make it to phase two, and then I see why you're in phase two. I was like, well, how can it be?
00:55:59
Speaker
Like, I won. Like, what you know, with who it's like, oh, oh, I see. I see. Okay, I'm only sad that I didn't get to play even more. So I've only gotten a little into phase two. I've beaten the first boss. I went to the Necromancer. Okay.
00:56:16
Speaker
good That's it's a good place to start, I think. Yeah. Yeah. Leshy Part 2 is surprisingly difficult until you build your deck up.
00:56:28
Speaker
Oh, really? thinks i'm ben think i'm ah Ben thinks I'm a garbage card gamer. No, that's not even it at all. Honestly, I didn't get that far in Inscription Part 2. I picked the Mage deck.
00:56:39
Speaker
Oh, you picked the Mage deck? I also picked the Mage deck, the Magnificus one. Yeah. What did you pick, Lorian? I think I picked that one too and immediately regretted it because it has such awful momentum.
00:56:52
Speaker
Did you pick it because you were unsatisfied with how much you got to explore those mechanics perhaps in a previous playthrough? Maybe. i That's why I picked it. wish I'd gotten to do more of that.
00:57:04
Speaker
yeah I saw wizard and I was like I didn't look at the cards at all. I just grabbed the wizard. think the robots are probably the strongest or at least they're the easiest you just have to survive now that i've seen some cards that's pretty good i like the necromancer stuff too but yeah yeah with the necromancer card that uh makes everything die twice that's a pretty good effect and it combos well with all kinds of other stuff like there are those little all right draw a card comes into all right we haven't we haven't fired a spoiler horn yet oh true ben how far did you get this week
00:57:40
Speaker
I got into the second act because I didn't I wasn't in a rush to finish the whole thing because I'm savoring the flavor.
00:57:51
Speaker
But you did point out like I was I'm pretty sure i was pretty sure I already knew this was an option, but like. You emphasized the, like, you know, you can just put in a cheat code and unlock Casey's mod right away. so that's what I did. i've been going ham on Casey's mod. Also, there were a couple things that I wanted to correct from last week. I couldn't remember what my champion card did.
00:58:16
Speaker
Because champion cards don't do anything. They just live on the door. Another thing is... want to tell people. We're going to go full spoilers. We'll try not to spoil Rhi about the rest of the game. I think we should do that. Yeah, don't spoil me. We'll go full spoilers up Act 2 and Inscription. Again, if you haven't played it and you like card games, it's available on Switch and PC and probably Mac. It's available on lots of things and it's very good. Play Switch.
00:58:46
Speaker
Better if you're surprised by it. So I'm also playing on Switch. Okay, Ben, continue your errata. Okay, so yeah, also, I was slightly conflating in my mind the special dagger and the trapper's knife. ah Because you can, that's a good thing to spend your teeth on, in my opinion. Perhaps better than pelts. ah get Get that knife for seven teeth, baby. um Anywho, I don't think I know what that is. That's an item? Okay, well...
00:59:17
Speaker
It's in Casey's mod and I think maybe it's also in Act 1 of instrict Inscription if you dawdle enough. I'm not as sure of that point. like I didn't dawdle very long in Act 1 of Inscription this time, but the first time I played Inscription, I couldn't like figure out what to do and so I ended up solving way more of the puzzles around the cabin and like unlocking more stuff is is the thing.
00:59:41
Speaker
Also, there's... i'm man If we ever talk about Inscription again, i will ask if I will ask about some things that if Lauren did some extras later in the game, because I'm curious, because there are some extras you can do later in the game that give you cool things that I still remember from my first time playing Inscription back when we first started the podcast. Anywho, anywho. So i'm I'm curious if she got those toys on her way to the to the end. um But anywho,
01:00:10
Speaker
i Don't think it's too much of a spoiler to explain what Casey's mod is. If you like that first act of inscription and you just wanted to kick it kept sacrificing squirrels a little more, ah there is a roguelike with ascension modifiers and like you can like you can just play act one inscription pretty much except like all the unbalanced shit is stripped out like you can't grow your Ouroboros again and again over multiple runs and stuff and like some ah a couple of the sigils are slightly nerfed but like mostly it's more act once oh and there's a
01:00:55
Speaker
I don't know. i won't i won't I won't say too much more than that. But like ah they're also, i said it's like Ascension. um And you know because so much of it is kind of Slay the Spire-like, that's a tempting comparison. But really, the way that the added difficulty modifiers work is a lot more like heat or fear in Hades 1 and 2, respectively, where you accept certain penalties that have like a point value. And you're just like trying to meet a certain threshold to get more lore and also card unlocks. Oh my gosh.
01:01:27
Speaker
I'd played Casey's mod a bit in the past, but like I didn't realize, or I didn't remember there being so many cool card unlocks. There are some, and and when you unlock cards in Casey's mod, you unlock them and you see them as act two cards from inscription.
01:01:46
Speaker
Although the whole thing is like act one, but like, it makes me wonder if there's a way to get those cards in act two of inscription. Like, um, anywho, I'm, I'm just curious about that, but the like, like they're cool designs and they did not have to go this hard. People would still have liked Casey's mod if it didn't have so many cool new cards and things. I don't think we'll ever get to try it.
01:02:07
Speaker
I said, I don't think playing on switch. We'll ever get to try it. can definitely do it on switch. It's not really a mod. It's Casey's mod is, is, is built into the game. It's in switch. it's it's ah It's an official thing. The mod name is it's it's an in-lore thing that will maybe make more sense once you play the the mod and stuff. You'll you'll see what's up. and um Yeah, it's it's really cool. so I regret that I didn't go harder with Casey's mod last time.
01:02:39
Speaker
and i was trying to like you know extend the experience of the main game because I didn't want to I didn't want both of us to, ah like both Lauren and I to have finished it while Rhi was but like, somehow I perfectly managed to get exactly as far as Rhi did with similar choices. And I'm, I'm excited if we ever talk about inscription again, maybe we'll both finish it and then we can all speak about whatever comes next.
01:03:09
Speaker
Yeah. There is more inscription to be played after this part. yeah Act 3 is sizable, and then there's a bit more after that. um Act 2 is probably my favorite of them all.
01:03:23
Speaker
ah I wish, as far as I know, there's not a way to stretch it out. Like... There's like one enemy that you can fight repeatedly, the training dummy. Everything else is like you beat it. You you beat them. You can't fight them again. It's like, I don't know, ah Pokemon or something like you defeated somebody. They won't fight you again.
01:03:43
Speaker
um And so it's like, I don't know. that There must be like the kind of mod Rhi was thinking about. There must be PC mods that extend X2. I'm sure there are. But I'm like, I wish that there was like an official like in-game way to be like, like I play an entire game that was act two. I totally would. ah I think it was off recording last time. But ah yeah, it was because we didn't want to spoil re or Bennett. Ben was like, it reminds me of of Pokemon TCG on Game Boy Color. And I was like, yes, that's exactly what it reminds me of. And I loved Pokemon TCG on Game Boy Color. That was such a cool game. ah The way that like you build your collection, and but you're still moving around the map and interacting with characters and stuff like that.
01:04:26
Speaker
Really cool game. um Anyway. Have you all been um in in Act 2? Sometimes I'll be winning a fight with one of the trainers.
01:04:38
Speaker
Yeah, I'm calling them trainers. Anywho... And I just decide i i'm not getting enough teeth. I'm not getting enough foils out of them. so I have not.
01:04:48
Speaker
i I give up the fight and then I try to fight them again and get more overkill damage so that I can buy more cards and booster packs and stuff.
01:05:00
Speaker
yeah all right well you don't have to i didn't i didn't go as hard with that the first time and it all worked out fine but like this time i just want to see all the cards i want to see all the cards i want agent 13 my way through act two of inscription just looking at more cards um so that's what i've been doing that's kind of it is you need foils to to like there's a limited number of cards card packs that you can get for free and if you want more you have to buy them and so you have to do overkill damage to get the foils and then But you definitely don't need to. It's just if you just want to see more things and just gorge on content. I think I bought them i think about one card the entire time. What?
01:05:38
Speaker
That's wild. Yeah, I just had i built a deck that I liked. So you just have a mountain of foils at the end? I had a lot. Yeah. ah Not nearly as much as I had the equivalent in Act 3, for whatever that's worth. Ah, yes.
01:05:57
Speaker
Rhi, I want to know, because last time you talked about the pliers pulling out the teeth and how awful that was, and I had the thought immediately, like, oh, but you need to use the knife to advance the story. And I want to know, how long did it take you to use the knife, and how did you handle that?
01:06:14
Speaker
Okay. It's interesting because, yeah, when I was going to talk about my experience, this is exactly where I was going to start. Because, you know, I came in and I was like, well, I beat it and I saw the videos. That has to be, you know, a phase two.
01:06:29
Speaker
And then basically it because I'm like, oh, I think, you know what I mean? I remembered I didn't have the film for the camera like when you did. And like i thought there's something there But I was like, don't want to like.
01:06:40
Speaker
look anything up, but it's like I don't have, you know, a lot of time to play this week. But I'm going in. Yes, I get the knife ah because I figure stuff out because I look around the room. I forget what it is. I don't know. It's like, oh, yeah. You know?
01:06:56
Speaker
I'm smart like that. I get the knife. Okay. The thing is, i don't know what the knife does. You know, i have no idea. Cause like the scissors like cut up a card. That's great. Right. So that's a sharp implement that doesn't like commit horror upon your soul.
01:07:14
Speaker
then I'm like, I was, uh, I think I was in a boss fight and I was like, oh I was down so far immediately. I was so far behind. um i had to I was just using all my stuff. And I'm like, alright. see what...
01:07:32
Speaker
ah It's horrible. Like the red flat, the whole like time I was like, this is so miserable. I had to play like a whole, a whole like region with that.
01:07:46
Speaker
yeah Okay. yo But then, ah but then I forget exactly ah how you get it right. But you get to put me offers you he a box of eyes.
01:07:58
Speaker
And I love how the game people did it because, of course, it's like a horrific box of loose eyeballs. But, like, one of them is, like, robotic.
01:08:09
Speaker
yeah And I didn't even think I don't know. i was, like probably late night or or something. but like I was like, ah you know, maybe different eyeballs do different things, but I just saw, I've played inscription in a very like princess donut style.
01:08:28
Speaker
It's like, yep, doing that. Open it right away. Not reading the description. yeah Yeah, I didn't look at it. I didn't see what the rest, I saw one normal eyeball. I saw the robot eyeball. I'm like, yoink.
01:08:41
Speaker
And then, of course, I finish the like, there's, like, writings and stuff. And that's cool. And it tells you stuff. And that's how you've that's how you finally do the clock.
01:08:53
Speaker
Or at least how I did it. because and but Without brute force or looking it up. Yes. Yeah, so, um, so yeah, then I got the clock and that advanced me to the next level where I'm like, wow, baby.
01:09:09
Speaker
It's like, in some, it's the card game, but the card game has changed and also the whole style of game has changed. Like you said, like a pixel and all that. ah pixelated Pokemon and it was just like ah these last time I'm like these people are like soap creepers like me like let's just make every kind of game in one game I love but so tip of the iceberg and i love that you go in and you're like oh i've been playing with all the creature cards and a handful of the bone and a handful of the bone cards and now all of a sudden there's also robots and mages and the cards that i know and love are still here it's very cool it's done very well without the the infinite supply of squirrels unfortunately i mean you can add squirrels to the deck but you have to draw them out of the main deck
01:09:59
Speaker
Yeah, gameplay. Okay, yeah. We'll get there because then the next thing, right? So that was cool. It was like, oh, whoa. I thought the the this beast format was the whole you know? And now it's like, no, that's just one category. And you're like, whoa.
01:10:17
Speaker
And then, of course, Princess Donut, say I saw the wizard deck. I'm like, yes, we should start that. And I grabbed that. And then as Lauren was saying, immediately i get into that and I'm like,
01:10:29
Speaker
Oh, well, you know, this doesn't, this doesn't, it doesn't make you feel super wizardy, you know, in the way that is satisfying, to be honest. So, ah me and then I chose the Necromancer to do first, and it's like, oh, these cards are cool. So immediately when I got my first pack of five or whatever, I'm like, wow.
01:10:50
Speaker
deck. I just didn't think about it. I'll just throw them all in one and then I'll like i'll i'll workshop it on the go. you know's been i've been very i didn't like read them all and think about it. I did look through them a little bit. of course Just enough to see how cool they all were. I didn't believe you when you said you didn't read But then when went in when i like went in ah to play, all of a sudden I was like, oh yeah, I didn't pay attention.
01:11:21
Speaker
There's no squirrels, can't, because you weren't doing that with the mages at all. so i hadn't i and i there's like the there's Everything looked different, so I never bothered to look for the squirrels. And And then when I'm trying to like pull off an Equomancer deck, it's so funny because like ah in Marvel's Snap, I see squirrels. i'm like, no, Garceau Central Park.
01:11:50
Speaker
I want those spots. Did he get a foam room? And... And this, an inscription, I got to this point, and I was just like, ah, y'all got any more of them squirrels, you know? Yeah. Like, the meme, I just, I miss them.
01:12:03
Speaker
I'm like, oh, having the option meant you didn't have to put resources in your deck. There was just always resources available to get instead of cards that do things. And, like, now it's like, ah, I got to generate bones? Like, yeah.
01:12:19
Speaker
how i used to be so it just you know i used to just build I used to just build my victories and on piles of squirrel bones. yeah i' Now I'm the rest. I'm of the opinion that Leshy had the right idea. Although the Act 2 thing, have y'all noticed there's that little hammer? That's a handy tool that sometimes you wish you had in Act 1. I learn that till late.
01:12:41
Speaker
I use the hammer a lot in two and three. um Something that I wanted to highlight in two, well, first of all, read yes, like I had the mage problem and I felt really stuck. like I had a hard time building my deck up enough that I had momentum.
01:12:57
Speaker
Once I got there, once I had a deck that could like do something, I was fine. But it was a struggle to get there. I had to have like the perfect because I had one viable card. I think it was a Mantis God. it was It was just like I just had like a terrible setup, a terrible initial pack. It was it was sad. um Or a handful of packs because I guess there's a few you can find for free.
01:13:18
Speaker
Anyway, something that I absolutely love about this that I've never seen another game do, even though it's quite likely some other game has done it, is it does this like color wheel thing, right? Where there's four factions and they can interact. You can totally make a deck that's like two faction deck that focuses on both of them. And there are a handful of cards that like actually do interact with two different factions. Yeah, there are some bridge cards. That's very magic, right? Or tons of other games that we've played. But the thing I love about this is it's not like all four of them use lands.
01:13:48
Speaker
They all four use different resources that that function differently. And it's so cool. Love that about about Act 2. Although it probably does make the balance harder because like you can have mana and blood and skull and skelets are bones and energy. You can have all those things at the same time. And using one doesn't cost the others. So maybe the balance is tricky, but I love that. and I think it's so cool.
01:14:14
Speaker
That's my new thing. I just finally started getting some robot cards. I'm like, I want robot deck. ah well robot Lauren, there's a thing you mentioned last week.
01:14:27
Speaker
You mentioned ah making in Act 1 a squirrel totem that had a cool effect. I did not play in Act 1 long enough to get the squirrel totem head. I think it's from some side questing around the cabin. i remembered it from my first playthrough, but I didn't have it this playthrough. But that is a sick thing. Ree, did you get the squirrel totem head?
01:14:50
Speaker
Yes! Oh, that was sick! Once I had that, that was all I ever used. like Yeah. great like Why would I use anything else? Oh, that was so baller!
01:15:02
Speaker
Like, I didn't realize when I picked it up in the cabin that was anything in game, and I was just playing, I'm like, what's this? This is always... I'm like, oh, squirrels. And I thought I just randomly picked it up that run and then I saw it was always there. I'm like, well, I will never use anything else. And also I will always go to a woodcarver first. now You know, before I've been talking about how they were my least likely thing to go to. Not...
01:15:29
Speaker
that's not true usually the item things but then that because like it was less reliable that you would you know get something good it's very punishing right to like waste a chance to like upgrade stuff it's why you didn't gamble on the like campfires that much And, um yeah, and then after you get the squirrel totem, I would like, that's part of the clever stuff of this game. I feel like it's not, like, look at Slay the Spire, right? That's, like, the pinnacle of, like, we're trying to balance it, we're trying to, like...
01:16:01
Speaker
do all this stuff. In this game, it's just about exploring ideas, and that's why it makes things finite, because things will get broke. They're not going to spend all the time to perfect it. They want to throw all these ideas and let you experience them, you know, briefly.
01:16:18
Speaker
yeah stuff Definitely a benefit of it being a single player game is the balance. It's okay if if you're allowed to do broken things sometimes. And for instance, the squirrel totem head does not make an appearance in Casey's mod. They are not letting you have something like that. It's so good. But you only get it, it feels like, right at the end, right? before you Yeah, I didn't even get it at all this time. I was like disappointed because I had such fond memories of my first playthrough going bananas with the squirrel totem.
01:16:47
Speaker
But, oh well. oh good Okay. I look forward to hearing more of what you think whenever you get around to it. Yeah.
01:16:59
Speaker
Probably when you finish the game would be, would be the next check in. I will try to psychically sense that you're about to finish the game and also finish it at the same time.
01:17:11
Speaker
yeah Check it. Just because our progress was so perfectly synced for for this one. Um, Yeah, it's fun. It's really, i'm good I'm glad to be playing it. I'm so glad you're playing it. I just love it when my friends have shared the the things that I love. It's just so nice.
01:17:27
Speaker
It's very good. Okay. um I am assigning next week homework. I had decided previously that, like, so we're off next week, and then the week after we have season rankings.
01:17:42
Speaker
Oh, so it's so a long homework. so So I'm going to delay assigning it so that I can think of a better one. Because, like, we only have so many secret homeworks left.
01:17:52
Speaker
I think they should be quality. And I wasn't, like, overly inspired. That is super fair. Who would show up in episode 99 without homework?
01:18:03
Speaker
That's just me. Oh, Lauren. Don't be yourself. That's ridiculous. Don't be silly. I'm being silly. i was I was very excited to talk about inscription more. And you know, if if I needed the time to come up with extra homework, I could have edited around that. It would have been fine.
01:18:17
Speaker
um Anyway.

Podcast Series Conclusion and Future Plans

01:18:20
Speaker
Yes. no episode No episode next week. Just a scheduling impossibility. Yeah.
01:18:29
Speaker
But, but, while, we're off, Ree talked to Scott and I for Fourth Location's YouTube show, Series 6. So, that'll come out on Thursday this coming week. So, if you want to check that out, it's it's kind of a long comics corner. Do you want to tease anything else, Ree? Do you want to tease the title? The title's pretty good.
01:18:52
Speaker
Uh, the title is the World Cup Thor and why second dinner ah has always been a Marvel villain. Are you intrigued? If you're not, there's something you. was a shower shot. Yeah, for real. My interest is peaked and a half.
01:19:09
Speaker
Yeah, if you're a fan of Comics Corner, check it out. It's very, very re-heavy. Um...
01:19:18
Speaker
I'm saying that in a good way. There are people who love that. I think everybody loves that. I had like two days, you know? so yeah just It was just me doing what I do.
01:19:30
Speaker
It was great. um So check that out on Fourth Location YouTube. We'll probably and don't i don't know if we'll collab with this channel or not. We will we will also be putting it on Rhi's stunning villainy channel.
01:19:44
Speaker
um Anyway. If you want to like and subscribe so you don't miss bonus episodes. We're coming up on 104, which will be the last for a while.
01:19:54
Speaker
Sad face. um But, but, you know, heart hands to, to all of you who have been saying nice things on like blue sky and Twitter and discord. It's, it's been great. And YouTube comments, of course. um That's been, it's been really nice. um It really has. Yeah.
01:20:13
Speaker
yes were we're glad we touched your lives although honestly i just I also just like talking to my friends it's cool anyway yeah tune in in two weeks same snap time same snap channel yay okay um offerings anyone else if you like I can tell you about the recent adventures of my Pathfinder Goblin Ooh, I want to hear about goblins.
01:20:44
Speaker
I love goblins. kind of want hear about that. I also am like, should I, just real quick, should I do a bonus content for next week? I feel bad, like, leaving them without a thing in in our final weeks. If you want to. i don't know. I don't know what anyone wants to hear me talk about. I guess I'm saying that here and now so that people can say what they might want to hear What will it be? The next zombie Richard Reads?
01:21:12
Speaker
Maybe, but that's no fun without you two. Oh, then there's nobody to make the decisions. Who's choosing the adventure? If not the Snap-on as co-hosts. I don't know. i Honestly, I can think of some possible answers. I'm the problem. If you two want to do something, as long as you can figure out how to edit it, that's fine.
01:21:33
Speaker
Well, I won't say that Ree's not invited to Ben's silly podcast stopgap thingy, but In fact, so I won't. ah You are invited, ree but also no pressure because we all agreed we weren't doing one that week Yeah. Anyhow, it's just a thing I'll think about. And you know what? No pressure on me. Maybe I'll decide not to do it.
01:21:56
Speaker
Maybe this was all just a thought exercise. There's re-series six. If somebody wants to hear about the World Cup Thor and why Second Dinner has always been a Marvel film, there there is that. It's mostly Thor, to be honest. But I'm mostly Thor. The Pathfinder gods. Yeah, let's hear We've heard about them several times.
01:22:14
Speaker
Oh, okay. No, I have a rule of like, there's only one outro thing, so we'll leave it as a teaser. What the? No, no. This is nonsense. No, we need to know. No, that's why I offered. Ben's thing was explicitly quick, can I get this in there? It was a little baby addendum. There's one thing for outro. We can't make outro a third segment. Well, then we're cutting Ben's thing. Yeah. The listeners will resent me forever if this is allowed to stand.
01:22:48
Speaker
Same snap time, same snap channel. Anybody have something to talk about this week? Fine. I mean, it could have been a T, you know, it could have been the hook. Okay. You're going to have something to talk about next time.
01:23:01
Speaker
Okay. I know. I just get like tired. Okay. the So my my goblin character is a a witch of the night persuasion.

Goblin Character Stories and Humor

01:23:12
Speaker
She's goblin. She's an advisor to the queen. This backstory is important and comes into play, so I need i need to preface.
01:23:20
Speaker
um Because she grew up with the queen. Because in in their in their area of goblin country, right? Maybe more more rural by some standards. Um, like, they have a patron goblin goddess who, uh, you know, would only bestow, because the god the gods of goblin country are fickle, she would only bestow her favor on um, like, one one one region of this of this area. And they would get, like, good harvest, all the good goblin stuff, and the other regions would have to go on without, like, without her blessing. And, you know, hard times

So, but her the thing is her her ah her deal, her weird goblin kink was she loves goblin pop, which is a very K-pop style of, ah you know, of of performance.
01:24:15
Speaker
So the youngest and the prettiest of goblins, you know, were forced to be sacrifices to form into these goblin pop groups. and perform in an ultimate competition in order to win the favor of, ah you know, the Goblin Brothers for the following seven years. Yeah. Okay. Naturally. However long. It was actually, the i forgot how long it was but it had to have been less long because historically the problem was they won the first time, obviously, rising all of their fortunes, you know. This is Goblin Eurovision.
01:24:54
Speaker
yeah ah so Yeah. I know what Eurovision is. I've heard it. Okay. And, yeah, so they rose up. You know, she came the Goblin Queen.
01:25:04
Speaker
My character, Kat, Dark Leap, came a, ah you know, Goblin Queen advisor. um But the problem is they lost the next, um you know, my character's managing...
01:25:20
Speaker
The Goblin Pop Team, they lost they lost it. Oh, no. and they lost the favor of the Queen. And probably into the the beginning of events of this where the Goblin Queen... was murdered, you know, it's probably part of it.
01:25:32
Speaker
Just saying. Okay. But the point is, my character had been selected ah for the K-pop group in part because she is Goblin Pretty. And I didn't decide this about the world, but it's been decided collectively, i guess, by my group that ah Goblin Pretty is human ugly.
01:25:52
Speaker
And vice versa. Right? So if you're if you're an ugly goblin, you're pretty to humans. And stuff. we have a character in our group who is goblin ugly, but human pretty. And my character, of course, is goblin pretty and human ugly.
01:26:06
Speaker
Now, recently we're exploring this haunted mansion on the basis of some tavern rumors, as one does. And ah we split the party. For some reason, we are always fucking splitting the party. That doesn't sound like it's your idea.
01:26:21
Speaker
Okay, we have to take a side trip because because me and one in one time that we split the party, we committed the best murder ever in Pathfinder. is the cop he he He deserved it probably. So like just rest your minds at ease. He was also fake and not real and imagined.
01:26:40
Speaker
he We got him drunk, and then we were all walking together down the city street. We convinced him to drink an invisibility potion because he was drunk. We convinced him it was alcohol, and then we shoved him off the ridge.
01:26:58
Speaker
yeah And then, like, nobody ever... The DM just, like, nobody ever found it. It was, like, the perfect crime because the body was invisible. Nobody ever found it. If die, well... under the effects of an invisibility potion, you stay invisible forever.
01:27:13
Speaker
you die in the game, you die in real life. You know, according to... Same logic. Anyway. So we still we still we still commemorate that as our best murder to date. Not our only murder, but our best one. Okay.
01:27:26
Speaker
so So we're in this haunted mansion, and we split the... Which I hate, because if you know me, like, if I am not engaged or involved... so It gets harder and harder for me to pay attention if I'm not, like, fiddling with my hands or something. Okay. So... um But we are always and forever splitting the party.
01:27:47
Speaker
um Which we shouldn't, we're little goblins. We're not that, you know, stronger together is the goblin motto. Okay, so um I went off and I'm exploring and I'm finding this hall of like paintings and like busses.
01:28:02
Speaker
And, you know, the the first stuff is human erotica, which is gross to me because I'm gobbling pretty, right? And it's like, ah, attractive humans, gross.
01:28:13
Speaker
All right, so we pass by that. The next one is landscape, so, right? And um I look among them and i I see one and i I'm like, well, is there one that would be good for, you know, that like Pog would appreciate? Pog is my so my witch familiar who is a toad.
01:28:32
Speaker
who is named Pog. And i I've been trying to manifest my will in the group, and it's been working. We've been working on building a moving ah castle, like Hal's moving castle style, but like goblins. We have a cart that can be pulled by an oxen, and we have a goblin catapult on it. So, you know, we're getting there.
01:28:52
Speaker
It's start. Okay. But I want to build a whole little room for Pog, and I was in, ah then he was like, well, there's like a bog, you know, painting. It's like, you know, it's perfect for, like, fog.
01:29:04
Speaker
And I'm like, okay, this is exciting for me because in all the artsy things I've always, like, seen documentaries on, they, like, use a knife to cut it out of the frame and roll it up, you know? And so ah I did that, and I had the plans to do that a lot more, and I get why now, because originally it's like, why would you...
01:29:24
Speaker
you know, ruin the art, but it's like, oh it's it's the it's the care it's the carry burden, you know, it's the overburden problem, or the you know, where it's like, oh, if you cut it, if you're not taking the frame and you're rolling it up, you can steal a lot more paintings.
01:29:41
Speaker
So this was my plan, but unfortunately, after the very first painting, ah it turns out there was like a god or ghost or something, something awful of the paintings,
01:29:54
Speaker
ah that came out and cursed me for stealing a painting and because i I lost my will save pretty bad. And I was cursed to be Goblin Ugly.
01:30:09
Speaker
Devastating, you know? Devastating. When my character got back to the other characters, they all had to hide their expressions of disgust at my human, pretty, goblin, ugly visage. Where once I had been a goblin pop star that brought seven years good fortune upon the land.
01:30:31
Speaker
It's truly devastating. I'm used characters I'm playing going through some kind of physical transformation, some kind of style, but truly, truly this has been horrific for a Night Witch character.
01:30:47
Speaker
Alright. That's what I've been up to! That's awesome. You've now heard. That is awesome. The listeners would never have forgiven me if we didn't get that update.
01:30:58
Speaker
I would have done it later. I don't know. I, yeah. Lauren made the face so I didn't have to.
