Music, Comics, and Morality in Marvel

00:00:01
Speaker
But we cant we kind of have a packed episode. Should we? Should we get into it? Yeah, let's do it. We have a lot. have We have lot. We have a lot. We have a lot. We have a lot. We have a lot. have a lot. Okay, a few weeks. Although was too many naas.
00:00:15
Speaker
I'm sorry. Yeah. Sometimes you're just trying to say na na na na, na na ah and you, I don't know, you sort of. You syncopate, you double up, you you pop and bop, and you know, we're all just doing our best.
00:00:31
Speaker
We're a couple weeks late on this, but we're covering the data mines for September season. It's Axis, which my understanding is some comic event where like Dr. Doom and Scarlet Witch, maybe two people are responsible for flipping the morality of the world's heroes and villains. Ah, so we have we have evil Iron Man and good carnage, etc. um So these are like a lot of repeat characters, but comic based ones.
00:01:06
Speaker
So yeah, That's something. i haven't read these comics, but anyway, we'll we'll get into it. um I'm just going to keep the rotation that I had in there for last week. um a Superior Iron Man. Our season pass five seven Double cost reductions to this.
00:01:26
Speaker
Ongoing double power increases to this. So, i I don't know. you You smack it with a wing beat and it's 3-11?
00:01:37
Speaker
It's pretty silly Yeah. i ah love this, right? it yous and It feels like properly inverse, right? And, ah like, you know, it takes it takes more in. And it's, like, evil, ah you know, feeling in tone. Plus, like, the double cost reductions in this feel appropriate because it's always easier to be evil and to have morals. It is known. So it should be slightly more powerful than, you know, yeah regular...
00:02:08
Speaker
Iron Man. And yeah, it just I feel like mechanically it feels appropriate. Otherwise, it feels appropriate. So I can try it. does it does It's using mechanics we have, but it's still something new to think about. feels new to me for sure.
00:02:24
Speaker
hu Yeah, go ahead. What are you thinking about it? I think that's a very generous interpretation. mean, i did i did find your your claims somewhat persuasive.
00:02:36
Speaker
But wow, I think you're helping them out way more than way more than this card deserves. I think this card is like such an admission of of defeat. Like this card is just, it's so of it's so so boost sloppy. It's like ah double cost reductions to this, double power increases to this. Like...
00:02:57
Speaker
I guess the new part is double cost reductions to this. Like, you know, yeah I understand like why we're doing the double power increases. It's like, what if Iron Man was selfish? Oh, he kind of already is. But like, but it's, it's just like, it's,
00:03:15
Speaker
You know, it's more stick bullshit. like it's Like, I play these cards and everything, but like, what if this card got twice as much of everything from Surge? well Like, that's not that's not new. that's not that's it's It's just like, it's the it seems like the laziest boosts love. It's like an admission that like we don't have any good ideas. I just, I don't know.
00:03:39
Speaker
I think this card doesn't taste good. That's what I think. It's slop adjacent, right? Like it ties directly into the sloppiest of Marvel Snap Slop, which is just... It says double on it twice. Let's pay with the power. Let's play with the power. And then the second tier is let's play with the cost. And this ties into both of those things. But it's not like passing them around. It it feels somewhat novel. It's not a recipient. It's not a donor. but Yeah.
00:04:07
Speaker
stick it's not it's not It's not a stick itself, but it certainly will we be happy to be on the receiving end.
00:04:17
Speaker
Seems strong. no yeah I don't know how i feel about this card, but yeah it really only needs to take like a single wing B or a single surge, and it it's worth playing all of a sudden. Okay. ah Ben.
00:04:33
Speaker
and time poses Sorry, we don't know if this is a super premium or not. All right, well, some kind of card. This is Antipolar Magneto. um Costs six, that's familiar, but only nine power?
00:04:48
Speaker
oh my gosh. And then, as this is our third Magneto, we know that it must have a three or four cost line in its text. And sure enough, on reveal, add a three or four cost card from your hand to each other location.
00:05:04
Speaker
So sort of like a little Dragon Lord. I mean, like, Dragonlord is, like, probably the card that is the most relevant point of comparison, but, like, it's pretty different. I mean, it's sort of the... It's it's the tombstone Dragonlord's Deathlock.
00:05:24
Speaker
And i i I kind of like that it does, like, a specific medium-sized card. Like, I think this is a cool design. i thought the last one was lazy and sad, but this design is, like...
00:05:37
Speaker
yeah yeah How much of that has to do with... I was about to ask you how ah how are its surfer stocks are, and then you were like, I like the sway better. I'm like, is that why?
00:05:51
Speaker
I don't think so. I don't think this card home. You wouldn't play it in Surfer? Well, here's the thing. I might, because you know i get a little wild with the with the rampy stuff. Like...
00:06:05
Speaker
right now my current surfer deck I don't have it right in front of me but I'm doing superior and hope and Merlin and yeah I like to sometimes have nine energy at the end and so that does make me think that like maybe I might try to sneak Magneto in there you know like I've been known to play some fibers but never a sixer like I'll play Shola I'll play I'll play cannonball I've experimented with the cosmic ghost rider in a surfer but like never dared put a sixer in there but like hey yeah there's a first time for everything right i don't know that's an exciting card cool design i think play him on five and then abs man him the next this is just this is odd this seems very very strong and yes it's a card that goes wide instead of tall so like you know it's it's a little bit doom shaped but like you get to choose to some degree what the doom bots are
00:07:01
Speaker
You know what's in your hand. i mean, like, ah you do have to have the cards. And then, like, what are you playing after that? If there is an after that, I mean, like, maybe this is, you know, maybe this is a six drop that you play on six and it's all very honest and all that.
00:07:17
Speaker
Also, oh, man, once once we mentioned the surfer possibility, I'm like, do you just hope that you nail the 50 50 and surfer goes before absorbing man? If if you decided to, you know... i think you don't gamble it.
00:07:35
Speaker
ah yeah Probably not. You build your deck differently. Also, just mechanically, if Magneto pulls Absman, it'll target whatever you played before Magneto. Oh, true. that That would be silly. That's not how cards work. It's not my first rodeo, but was like a three cost and a four cost. I like to play a three cost and four cost. But alas, you hope it's brood surfer. That's your dream. Yes. That that seems like the one.
00:08:03
Speaker
seems like a very cool card. I don't think it has to be surfer. I think you can make a deck that has enough good threes and fours to justify running this guy. Yeah. I think it's probably not surfer. TBH.
00:08:14
Speaker
definitely inspires the the juices. Gets the juices flowing. That's how you say that.
00:08:22
Speaker
Either one is fine. You do with your juices what you will. Um, no good card that does interesting things. Like, I will say I don't like metas that are all about, like, waiting and then doing a big turn six because it's really hard to play against. It's really to gauge, like, how much are they going to do? Where is it going to go? And it feels unfair when you've just been, you know, working hard every turn, you know, building that power honestly, like, crewing Anyway, so, like, that's my only fear is, like, ah that's, like, that's that's not fun.

Card Game Mechanics: Creativity or Stagnation?

00:09:00
Speaker
you know, honestly, I was thinking. Like, okay, because it's a propes to bring it up now um instead of later. i was thinking there's more positive sentiment around this season, at least from what little I've seen. I've been feeling it myself, too. I think all the things i thought about gun-toting Thanos are real, but, like...
00:09:25
Speaker
At the same point, even though I've been playing against it nonstop in Snap, it's been less irritating ah than in previous seasons. And I was specifically thinking like Star-Lord season and how awful that felt. And I'm like, what's the... day I was trying to nail it down. I'm like, what is exactly the difference? And I'm like, oh, is that it? Is that because Star-Lord was the big...
00:09:51
Speaker
end turn finishers so it was impossible for you to like judge your opponent's stuff or like counter it effectively whereas Thanos you're like you know you're building up to it it's easier to like see it coming what do you think guys know what's that You know what's coming with Thanos, because you can see the stones, but I think it's also just a matter of scale, right? Like, as long as somebody's not doing silly Wong stuff with Thanos, then the the green shot... they're definitely trying to do silly Wongs. Oh, yeah.
00:10:21
Speaker
There silly stuff there. can't tell what's coming with Thanos. It's really annoying. But, i mean, like, the green stone, like, discounts your hand by one. So, like, at most, they're saving six, seven... I can't believe I said that. They're saving six energy, because you wouldn't have seven cards in hand unless something weird happened. Um...
00:10:40
Speaker
But, you know, when you were doing, like, Star-Lord into Zola or Star-Lord into Grandmaster Zola, like, somebody was ending up with, like, 20 extra energy. So mostly I think it's scale. And also the Star-Lord was gaining power, too, whereas this Thanos gets, like, four power if he has all the shots.
00:10:58
Speaker
I did start thinking it's Thanos. Yeah, I think some is just the power level. Um, but right. when Did you start looking at like, I'm never going to learn all these stones. Like, absolutely. I'm still, you I'm like, which one is the one that destroys their lowest enemy? I really want to know that one. Everything else. I just assume they always have that one.
00:11:16
Speaker
What? Didn't I play this so much and play against this so much? I did in fact learn every single stone. It is difficult to retain all of theirs, but it's like, Oh, I know what they do now.
00:11:29
Speaker
I can always see the the space stone. That's the one I can always see for sure. Oh, do you have colorblind issues with this stuff? Yeah, it's ah it's ah fucking annoying and not not super friendly.
00:11:44
Speaker
Yeah, I agree with that. The fact that you can't... the face There's no way for you to see their... You can't check? You can't see their thing except for like when they play the card. yeah Hey, what if what if every time you loaded a shot, it went to the banished pile where someone could refer to it?
00:12:01
Speaker
they do damage kle they do go to the banish pile when he shoots them maybe they should just go there to begin with they're not hurting anything over there yeah i think that's a good idea or i don't know have the dial show up all the time next to the player's name and i know like if we start doing that then we're gonna do that on other cards and what happens if somebody's role well i mean that's their they made the complexity bed they can lie in it that's my feeling So like the shots always appear in the same position, but I don't, it's definitely harder to remember like, oh, the top right shot is the red shot than it is to just be able to see the color red.
00:12:39
Speaker
Also, it spins around when it appears. So like not super helpful for like easy legibility. Right. You get like half a second where it's stationary and then it disappears.
00:12:50
Speaker
Oh yeah. I feel for you. That's not, that's not good. So I do a lot of, ah I make a lot of vibes based decisions against Thanos Fractured Frontier. Luckily, I'm pretty good at those. I've been playing Snap a long time and they don't know what my point output is going to be either. It's, you know, turnabout is fair play, I suppose. I just, I think I achieved that effect in a more interesting way than they do.
00:13:17
Speaker
Okay, the next one, re it's either this next one or Magneto is the super premium. I just couldn't find it labeled anywhere.
00:13:27
Speaker
What, Red Onslaught? Yep. Okay, is what it means. Okay, it is a 4-4, power, ah with ongoing, has three random ongoing abilities.
00:13:43
Speaker
I do not like this. I love it. As someone who does play, really? someone who plays, like, I've tried to play a lot of different spectrum decks. I've played a lot of Ms. Marvel decks. I've played a lot of, like, random decks.
00:13:57
Speaker
But the combination of random ongoing, ongoing already, like, struggles enough to win with you knowing, like, literally everything that's in here. And, like, there ongoing abilities that are bad. Yeah, there's, like, what, five of them? Like, Ebony Maws, Typhoid Marys.
00:14:17
Speaker
How do you combine? And the thing is, to like, Nightmare, you niigate you mitigate mitigate ah bad effects like Well, you probably have more than you can play out with energy anyway. So you're picking out the best from your hand. Also, you have like, maybe you have enchantment. You have other ways of like nullifying. and like sort How do you build to benefit yourself with this in an ongoing style, but then also account for when it goes horribly wrong? don't know. It's Ramatut.
00:14:50
Speaker
It's Ramatut. It's kind of like Ramatut. I like Ramatut when I get them randomly, but Here's a weird thing. So this card doesn't... This card functionally probably has an on-reveal, right?
00:15:03
Speaker
On-reveal, you pick these... Or not pick, but, like, you are assigned these three... like Cosmo's gonna stop it, right? No, Cosmo's not going to stop it, but, like, this isn't what ongoing effects do. Like, like this is an on-reveal effect that, like, gives ongoings, although it's not, like, an on-reveal for Cosmo purposes.
00:15:22
Speaker
yes It's, like, weird, and, like... At least with Ramat... The way the card is written, it's like not clear. like if If you didn't know, you might think maybe you could see which three random abilities it had like in your hand.
00:15:36
Speaker
I don't think that's the direction they would take it, but like this isn't how cards are written. you know I don't know. yeah it's got It's got a secret on reveal is how I'm thinking of it.
00:15:51
Speaker
The on reveal what determines the ongoing abilities? Yeah, yeah what where's the point where it determines what the ongoing abilities are? Maybe it's at the start of the game. Maybe it is at the start of the game. It's like not clear. you can see them before you play Red Onslaught. Yeah, that's that's like what I'm wondering about. But I assume it's like it's probably like ongoing Rama Tut.
00:16:13
Speaker
So it's probably like but functionally sort of an on reveal. But that's not clear from the text. It's it's like not written well. Yeah. Yeah. Or not written consistently, I would say. I don't know if you need to i don't if you need to know when those come into play. I mean, it's important to know if you can see the reference cards before or after. It's definitely a better card if you know which ongoings it has. your hand But that you'll just you'll just know by tapping the card. Like, we'll know right away if if it's something that you know ahead of time or not.
00:16:42
Speaker
Yeah, but you'll know whether or not you should play it if you can see the abilities before. Right, that's critically important, but I don't think it's critically important for it to be on the card. You play it once and you know the answer to that question.
00:16:53
Speaker
i don't see it having other nuance like, oh, I have to you know not play it on Cosmo. or No, no, no. I'm i'm not saying it like changes like how you would play the card. I'm just saying like templating and... like how the cards are written, you know, it's good for them to be consistent. Like it's not, it's not like yeah good for Jane Foster fractured frontier to be like, well, here's the thing. And in case you didn't know that before, that's called judging the worthy. And if you i try you get to do it, like that it's yes more of that kind of thing. Clarity is and butter of card game. I'm opposed to flavor in card text.
00:17:33
Speaker
and I do not like Janes. But this this is one where it's like, okay, who care if it's a game start or if it's a semi-on reveal that happens, like i don't I don't think that... I mean, it super doesn't matter because this card's hot garbage, right? Oh, no. I think this card will be fine.
00:17:50
Speaker
it's It's a fine card in a mediocre deck. I'm with Ben on this. This feels pretty garbage-y to Cowards. Ramatart is a good card. Red Onslaught, gonna be a good card.
00:18:03
Speaker
ramadzad is a card certainly a card
00:18:10
Speaker
um all right i mean you can mitigate some of those you can mitigate lizard and typhoid mary with with luke cage so you'd want to have me luke in the deck to maybe lot of bases Even if it's good ones, you don't like you don't know that they'll...

Card Critiques: Power and Balance

00:18:27
Speaker
like What if it's Ms. Marvel and you just can't get anything? i mean, do you always play it in the middle in case it might be Ms. Marvel or Mr. Fantastic? Yeah.
00:18:36
Speaker
Or Claw. Probably. Yeah, probably. Because it still keeps you in Claw shape. But like i don't just dont I still don't think it's a good... I don't know's good getting know. Sometimes he'll be a hero.
00:18:47
Speaker
Getting three, though? That seems like a lot. um But yeah, sometimes it's going to be Red Skull, Starbrand, Typhoon Mary, and you're just like, well, good thing I brought my Enchantress um for my vanilla 4-4. Okay, yeah, he's he's he's fine.
00:19:07
Speaker
here's Here's the thing. i think he's I think people will underrate him because of the randomness that makes them uncomfy, but it doesn't really matter because the Spectrum decks aren't super real. He doesn't get plus six from Spectrum, though. I don't think he even goes in a Spectrum deck. i he's like He's such nonsense. I don't know. We'll see. We'll see. maybe maybe's Maybe it's a better deal than I think it is.
00:19:33
Speaker
All right. Next up, cool which is, to my understanding, Hulk's Hulk. It is the Hulk backwards, yeah, but it is the Hulk's Hulk. hulk it's It's the dark side of the Hulk. 510, on reveal, each player randomly gives a card in their hand minus one cost for each different cost among their cards in play, yet another in a long series of symmetrical cards where your goal is to take advantage of it more than your opponent does.
00:20:02
Speaker
510's pretty beefy stats. um I don't know. i I can definitely see a world where I prefer this to running something like Warlock.
00:20:13
Speaker
Well, that's sort of That's damnation by faint praise right there. Sure.
00:20:21
Speaker
My first thought was incorrectly like that it was like maybe could go with Ms. Marvel, but like... Having played a lot of Ms. Marvel, I tend to it's like it's less about you're trying to just space out, right, your two costs and stuff. like You're saying so you don't have to Yeah, you're thinking about different things.
00:20:43
Speaker
Sorry. Let's see. and um This more, you want a deck that plays on curve, right? Like a moon dragon deck. You want a deck that's like, you played a one, a two, a three. so like, maybe like a Galactus First Steps. Like, I've been playing that recently with Quicksilver and Domino, you know?
00:21:04
Speaker
Fisk Virus stuff? That's good one. I think just home for something like this. Right? And then discount all your big Wiken easily has three plus hits. You can afford claw easily.
00:21:18
Speaker
But that seems like a good call. as the symmetricality goes, how many more different costs are you going to have on the board than your opponent has on turn five? You can have, like at most, realistically, four different costs on the board.
00:21:31
Speaker
Your opponent probably has two or three different costs on the board. Wow, you got one more point of discount than you gave your opponent. For playing this vanilla ass 510 that doesn't do anything. You play Mobius. This card seems worse than Red Onslaught. Okay, yes, Mobius, you do want to play.
00:21:47
Speaker
But then you gotta Mobius. Playing Mobius is, you know... play Mobius a lot in my Galactus First Steps deck. There are reasons to play Mobius, for sure. I don't even think it has to be that you end up with more discount than your opponent does. What if you just have better things to discount? Okay, I've come around... You're built to be a ramp deck.
00:22:09
Speaker
Like, yeah, exactly. And that's what I was thinking. I was like, Ram, but not Dr. Not Doom 2099, because you're going to want to play more things later if you've discounted them.
00:22:22
Speaker
That's true. So not the Moondragon track either. So more of the Galactus first steps kind of stuff, I think. i think that's it. But I've come around. Okay. Before, you know how begrudging i was about, like, giving, you know, benefits to the mutual benefits. Yes. with your with your With your cost, you would benefit someone else as well as yourself. Now, this isn't real life. This is a game where only one of you wins. so And it's so funny because it's like.
00:22:55
Speaker
Right? In board games, like, I'm totally fine with that. Like, all the time, and like, I don't know, Lords of Waterdeep, it's like, yes, I'll get my five, and you all have one. But it's the fact that I've got multiple opponents, and they're all getting equal, when it's just the one and one. Because it's like a big board game, and you're getting a lot more. You're like, you know, I know i know the reality of trickle-down economics. Like, I'm going to win it.
00:23:22
Speaker
You all could have your small... your small crumbs, right? But in a head-on-head game. Okay, and that was my old stance. Like, why give them an inch? Never, never give them anything. But recently, recently, i have come to learn I was wrong. And this...
00:23:40
Speaker
Oh, is specifically because of Lauren, because i asked Lauren for a decode and she very nicely gave it to me. I forget where I saw. I don't know what she's talking about. She she sounded hype. I like saw it jumped on. This deck has crystal in it, a card I have vehemently refused to play, often have subbed out in decks that put crystal in that I wanted to try just because I'm like, no, surely there's better than crystal. And like this stack, I was finally like, I see it.
00:24:13
Speaker
And finally I get to play amazing Rian Gonzalez variant of Crystal. And like, I was doing it, yeah, because I was like, yeah, draw more cards. Especially like at the start, because everyone was playing Thanos, and it's like, whatever, draw more of you little stones, you're not out of board space, like... Boom, you know what I mean? Like, going to power. And so for the first time ever, I was like, all right.
00:24:37
Speaker
I can still grow. i can still change. i was wrong. I really enjoyed playing Crystal, and I didn't hesitate. Normally the last, it's like, you know, ah like i i mean And one, it's still incorrect to play Maximus like on turn two or something. like Don't do it. Pretty much always.
00:24:55
Speaker
yeah Yes, but like Crystal was one. It's like if i if there was no better option, but joyfully I was playing Crystal. Watching my little Shadowlands Daredevil ping up as I got more little like demons and giant cards to play. It was extremely fun. All right, this is a preview for later...
00:25:16
Speaker
ah you know of the stack okay so yeah I'm always been a fan of Crystal but it certainly helps that she has six power now and I think that's important to remember when you're talking about Luna and Crystal and Kla it's not perfectly symmetrical Kla you're getting ten power to the board that your opponent's not getting for your five energy it's a five ten though and we don't play five tens just because like it's a five ten like that's not why we play five tens I don't think i I think we play five cost cards because they have like really good effects for us and I don't think club club I mean sure you can be reminded of crystal if you want to be generous but like
00:25:57
Speaker
Klaue has given me Triton vibes and I've been, I've been playing some Triton in the past week and it's not a good card, y'all. no And you're like, what, what, if what if we can take it? What if we can, you know, like what, it's a symmetrical effect, but we can take better advantage of it. And I'm like, how much better advantage of Klaue can you take than your opponent can? Like, really? Yeah.
00:26:17
Speaker
Like probably not much. And like Triton, you can take better advantage of those three power. Like there are like clear ways to like, you can see the use, like you can see how like, well, my three power is actually nine power, 12 power. And they're only get like, you can see all the ways that Triton could get you ahead. And it's still hot garbage. Don't play Triton. I did it. I did the science for you. It's not good. Take it out. Save yourselves. Um,
00:26:44
Speaker
Yeah, even even with Captain Carter and Maverick and all the nonsense, Triton, hot Garbo. Okay.

Innovative Card Designs and Gameplay Dynamics

00:26:53
Speaker
Ben? Next card. Ah, a card. Probably a better one than Klaue. Ah, Rogue. Another five cost.
00:27:01
Speaker
ah Five cost five and power. That's the word. I was like, energy? No, that's cost again. um Anywho, this Rogue, Scion of Division.
00:27:13
Speaker
So... On reveal, she steals the text of the highest cost card in your opponent's hand. um You know all that morph that we love to play?
00:27:26
Speaker
What if? Morph was guaranteed to have bad stats for the cost. Five five. Ooh. I mean, she does target the highest cost card, which Morph does not do. Steals the text. She doesn't copy it. Ooh, that's that's important. Stealing text. I have not seen a card that steals text. but Original copy. Except for original rogue who steals text. OK, maybe I have seen a card that steals text before and it had the same name and should have sprung to mind. but I don't know about this one, but man, stealing the text, that's ah that's a CGR before their thing has hit the board. But on the other hand, before their thing has hit the board and they've paid for it and everything, like we all love to not play cards that have been made bad. That hurts the cube equity, right? like yeah
00:28:09
Speaker
Yeah. If you break their play, you won, but you're not getting those cubes. Yeah. I feel like she's got a She has low enough power that, like, you she's going to be very meta-dependent, right? You're going to play her in a meta where you're seeing a lot of a specific kind. Like, if you can, I think you can steal a Thanos or something. But, like, other than that, on a whiff, she's just a 5-5, which is so high in cost and so low in power. But I think she just becomes a like ah kind of a counter card in specific metas. Right. That is a great point because if she steals Thanos fractured frontier, she doesn't get the shots like you break their Thanos, but you don't you don't get anything beneficial on your end. Right. and
00:28:57
Speaker
OK. But there's an important question that we need to ask ourselves. Is new rogue a white queen friend?
00:29:08
Speaker
So you know what you're going to hit. hu I mean, the answer is obviously sure, but not really. Exactly. You need a wait would be count to so you can try and play them both is what you've been trying to do. So that would be something with like fractured frontier Psylocke and stuff.
00:29:26
Speaker
Victoria Hand or Quinjet. Spoilers for later. I've been up've in deck building with some of those cards. I've been thinking about them. All right. Yeah, I think this card's really tricky. The power is too low to make her desirable, but if it was much higher, she would be great.
00:29:42
Speaker
so Yeah, you don't make her too good. Because that's a really an interesting card. She's also kind of more annoying than effective, right? like That's my guess. She causes more games to end before turn six.
00:29:59
Speaker
It's just, know, it's just less interesting. yeah Rhi with our next one. Look at this. Okay, this is three cast, four power, a friendly neighborhood carnage. ah It just sounds wrong. Sounds wrong to say. Okay, on reveal, move your other cards here to the right.
00:30:20
Speaker
um Plus two power for each moved. I mean, that's pretty good. gotta go straight to Ben, right? and is The most moving of move players. give it yeah how How good is it?
00:30:36
Speaker
What do think? Seems a lot better than FanFay. Yep. That's just a first blush. I mean, like, I like Fanfei. I've played some Fanfei. Fanfei's a fun, cool card who sometimes helps you win a game.
00:30:51
Speaker
um But this is a way better card than that. man. Like, I... It's it's pretty cool. it's i ever Ever since Aranya hit the scene... Honestly, ever since Niko hit the scene, like, gosh, it sure does feel good to move those cards to the right.
00:31:08
Speaker
Because, you know, you later it's it's juicy. It's fun. And ah I like this card and you don't have to eat the cards. I mean, obviously you're playing carnage to enable to like enable, like destroy stuff.
00:31:25
Speaker
So like it's never really been about eating the cards for the stats and all that. Not really, but like yous you're leaving a lot of power on the board, you know? This is a 310 and then you move three things and those moves are like worth some power. They're probably worth at least three power. Probably cards you want to move. Hydra Stomper, yeah, exactly. Like this is probably like a 313 kind of like at its floor if you're moving the three cards. Yeah.
00:31:56
Speaker
Like you're, you're definitely getting one point of power for each of the cards moved, like for whatever other stuff you've got going on. Like if they're all sliding onto the Craven lane, like it's worse, you know, like, and when I say worse, I mean like better for you. Like this is like a pretty mighty card. Like I, it feels a bit too good to me personally.
00:32:16
Speaker
And I, I'm not like the most active mover in, in 2026, but, But like, dang, I want to be playing this card. It seems fun and strong. This is the biggest on reveal move besides Heimdall, right? Like technically Dr. Strange can do this, but the requirements are so much tighter. Yeah, you you really have to thread the needle and get three things with the exact same power. And also like, do you want to move those three things all to Dr. Strange's lane? This is like much better because you can have a full lane and move...
00:32:49
Speaker
outwards to to put like three things on a lane that may have been empty before. like Everything about this is like... This is really strong card. I like this. And then you grandmaster him. And just compared to Helya, just the fact that that happens. The next turn where they can read it and stuff, you know having it happen the turn that you're doing it... Yeah, the unrevealed...
00:33:13
Speaker
yeah Yeah, this is so much better than Fanfei. And that Grandmaster thing that you threw out, Lauren, is disgusting and hilarious. That's, that's wow. This card is nuts.
00:33:24
Speaker
they've had They've added a lot of move cards in the last, I don't know, year and a half, two years. And hardly any of them have become staples. And I think this one just does instantly. This is just this just goes into into most flavors of move. will like that Absolutely. Absolutely.
00:33:41
Speaker
Seems really, really strong. Okay. Scarlet Witch, Queen of Chaos. The last Series 5 of the season. She's a 3-4 and her art is not different enough from regular Scarlet Witch. No, not even a little.
00:33:55
Speaker
Start of turn, add an extremely random skill to your hand. It costs zero this turn. I tried to find the list. it's for them If I remember off the top my head, it's mostly every collectible skill...
00:34:10
Speaker
And then a handful. It's basically every skill in the game that doesn't target a specific card. So like Agamotto's temporal manipulation, you can't do that. And you can't do the champion skills that say like, your champion does this.
00:34:24
Speaker
But the other champion skills are there. There's a handful of them. Like I think Subterranean Summons, the Mole Man skill, I don't think that references champion at all. So that is one that she can generate. Making it plus zero is really, really good. This card looks fun as hell.
00:34:41
Speaker
Yeah, but some of the skills on the list are going to be like little baby skills. Sometimes you're going to get Merlin skills. Sometimes you're going to get once in future. Sometimes you're going to get down Mandala when you don't have anything to Mandala about.
00:34:54
Speaker
You know, i can't. It's a werewolf card. You can't guarantee that there will be any utility to what you get, even if it's free. It'll be an on reveal. So it's a werewolf card.
00:35:04
Speaker
I mean, you're making one on, I mean, it is start of turn, so you're getting more than one on reveal. Like how many? I don't think this is like a good werewolf friend. That's my instinct.
00:35:15
Speaker
But I don't know. Maybe. i mean, it's maybe. i guess it really irritates me how many werewolf friends are at the three cost because it's like then they compete with werewolf getting him out.
00:35:27
Speaker
a little bit, yeah. Yeah, I think I'd probably rather be prowling. you're muted, Rhi. Sorry if we've been ignoring you. ah Okay, that makes a lot more sense. Okay. What were you why were you saying? i I just saw your mouth moving. i was like, oh, dang it. I was looking at the card, so I didn't even see your mouth moving. I so i'd like to think I would have noticed. it was my fault.
00:35:50
Speaker
I had mute because I've been, like, coughing because normally I'd never mute myself, so, like, I don't worry about it, and I totally had forgotten it. It's, like, very long time ago. No, that makes the last Okay, no um I forgot. Whatever. sorry did I interrupt? No, it was probably insightful.
00:36:12
Speaker
am saying, yeah, no, this is my kind of random ah right in comparison to Red Slot is clean about this. You get to decide whether you play it or not.
00:36:24
Speaker
It costs nothing that turn. You can... sync it with all kinds of like Nick Scratch, you know, could be synced with it. It is a Nick Scratch friend.
00:36:36
Speaker
Yeah, exactly. It's, this is like, this is real good. Like, this is the kind of random you do and you get multiple benefits like out of it, right? that I feel like there's so many cards now that it's like, it used to be like, it would go out there and it'd do its thing and you're like, good job. And now with cards, you look at it turned two turns later, it's like, what have you done for me lately? You know what i mean? Like, i got Drax's avatar here, and he's scaling for me. I've got these other cards that do stuff over turns. And so, like, you know, this fits with that. Like, it, it you know, keeps on giving.

Marvel Snap's New Season: Card Analysis

00:37:18
Speaker
Do you think the point of the word extremely is that it picks skills that are like tokens and champion skills and and not just collectibles? I think that's what they're getting at. okay like Other things like Ramita and Red Onslaught, I think they're working from the list of published cards that you know you could put in a deck.
00:37:36
Speaker
And this one is working from a wider list of wackier things. yeah All skills. Also... Just to go back to Red Onslaught for a minute, I was looking at it.
00:37:46
Speaker
That's Red Skull, right? It's Red Skull and Onslaught. He's got tentacles because he's a Hydra guy. Did we need another Red Skull card? I don't know. Maybe not. Also, how many Red This or That's are there? I was thinking about this last week with Red Wolf.
00:38:02
Speaker
Still more apologies to Red Wolf and Red Wolf's many admirers. I should not i should not have Anywho, anywho, anywho, we got Red Wolf, we got Red Guardian, we got Red Skull, we've got Red Shift, we've got Red Hulk. Like, it's just a million things with red in front of them. It's true for most of the colors.
00:38:23
Speaker
Actually, not as much. I mean, we we have a few blues. yeah we You know, you you got your you your blue Marvel and your... Got some blacks and whites. I can't think of any greens.
00:38:34
Speaker
You know, the extremely random nature of this card is going to make it really obnoxious to play against. Someone's going to play a zero cost that you absolutely no idea what it's going to do. It's getting so hard sometimes to determine whether you should like... Snap, stay in a game. i think the I think the range of the skills are pretty small, which is why you need to be integrating with something else. You need to have a reason for whether it's Nick Scratch or Werewolf or i don't know. What else is there? there're ah Filling lanes like like Angela and and Zombie Scarlet Witch.
00:39:13
Speaker
um I still think... Yeah, exactly. Yeah, Scar. I think there's multiple purposes. The fact it gives you new cards, it like makes them cost nothing. It's hidden information you know that could be useful.
00:39:29
Speaker
Even if you're just planning on like discarding it or, i don't know, Mad Thinker. Whatever you're doing. Mad Thinker. Yeah. I know. She looks super fun.
00:39:40
Speaker
Yeah. entropic havoc and oh o and tropic havo these are series four cards we don't know the we don't know the modes yet that's why they're coming at the end this one is a three three and each turn you steal one bonus energy from your opponent if they have any um Maybe they should have just made... the I don't know.
00:40:06
Speaker
like We have Quicksand. Isn't this Quicksand's job? like Quicksand didn't do good Maybe they should have Quicksand better at Quicksand's job. like That doesn't mean release another card to like like fully bury the previous one that didn't land. like I don't know.
00:40:24
Speaker
I don't like it, but it seems powerful. Quicksand... in In Star-Lord Zola meta, Quicksand's better. but Maybe. We haven't really seen it. We haven't given it a chance. It's never had its opportunity. And now it never will because this card comes along to fully supplant it Well, no Quicksand removes all of their bonus energy once.
00:40:51
Speaker
Havoc removes one per turn. So if somebody's doing really, really greedy stuff, Quicksand's better. But I don't think we're and don't think we're ever gonna see the meta that justifies Quicksand being in your deck.
00:41:07
Speaker
Yeah, i think I think not. I think that, man, I wanted Quicksand to be good. Don't you just want to for her? thought she would be better than she is, to be honest. I was wrong about her.
00:41:20
Speaker
And maybe she's still, will I still hold out hope that quicksand will have a moment, but I don't know. Sometimes she's in cerebral four. That's cool.
00:41:30
Speaker
Just cause she's a two, four. I think she could be a two, five and it would be fine. I think they should have given her more time to be the anti-bonus energy card before printing another one. that Also, they ban her from all the modes with extra energy.
00:41:46
Speaker
Ridiculous. What? Which I think might actually be like a clarity thing because I don't think the high voltage energy counts as extra energy. Oh, that's interesting. She would be really good there if if she did stop it.
00:41:59
Speaker
well um Maybe it's for the best she's banned there, but it is, you know, I don't play that mode, so. I think this Havoc is bad. Three cost is really high to pay for this. i can't believe his power is so low. Is there anything you can pair him with besides Luna Snow?
00:42:18
Speaker
Oh, I don't think he's that bad, though. That's pretty pair. Yeah, turn Luna Snow into two energy per turn for you. Yeah, i don't think I think this card is probably every bit as not good as Quicksand, but I still wish they had left Quicksand alone in that category. You know what I mean?
00:42:35
Speaker
i don't know. But no, I'm not worried about this card being like too good. this This card seems like a bit of a... Yeah, I don't think it's too good, but like it is stealing from the A lot of people do the bonus energy. like There's lots of ways to get bonus energy now. And so, I mean, Shria with sometimes, but then, like I said, you're not just it's not just a counter card. It's giving it to you.
00:43:01
Speaker
It's a two energy swing. I feel like it's better than quicksand. I feel like it's better. I don't think it's, like, great because it's not reliable, but, like... but I'm just thinking about, like, it if you if you get it out before your opponent ramps, then they just don't ramp.
00:43:18
Speaker
Or if ramp is critical to their plan, then they retreat, right? Like, you play Entropic Havoc, they play Electro, they're just gone. Like, i don't i don't know what the scenario is where this is, like, this is helping you get more cubes.
00:43:31
Speaker
And if you play him on turn six, he does nothing. And it's just so much worse than Mobius. Like, Mobius is what it looks like when you're... when you're ruining somebody's like ramp stuff in an effective way. And this is not that.
00:43:46
Speaker
Um, yeah, I don't, I don't know. I still, I'm, I'm mostly just angry that he's crowding the space. It should be quicksands. I think if he cost two or he had a bit more power, you could sometimes justify him, but mostly it's a different card at two.
00:44:03
Speaker
Just too bad. It's too, it's too inconsistent. Yeah. Because if it if it costs two, it could get out in front of some things, like Superior Spider-Man, for instance.
00:44:14
Speaker
like I could see it having a lot more utility at two. Yeah, plays a lot nicer with your own Luna. And you know what? I think it could keep the three power. I think i think it should just be a two, three. i don't know. Okay.
00:44:27
Speaker
One more. re Okay. The inversion skill. it doesn't any power, but it costs three.
00:44:38
Speaker
With on reveal, invert the power of the lowest power card cards here. Positive becomes negative and vice versa.
00:44:50
Speaker
i think it's cool. You know, it'll lead to some different... Some different thinking. are you And it'll make old cards. I love cards that make old cards interesting in different ways, too.
00:45:06
Speaker
um Right? It feels like a lot of the kind of buff salad kind of cards don't do that. They just kind of, like, combo with the same sort of stuff. But this is kind of card that makes you be like, okay, like, how do use this with Sentry? You know? and me Is this a backup for, like, Goblin? Like, what am I doing with this? This is intriguing.
00:45:25
Speaker
I'm into it. Yeah. Void and Hood seem like the obvious candidates. i don't like It's a three six if you play it on Hood, so I'm kind of not like super into I mean, I think it's really... It is costly, you're right, for one card.
00:45:38
Speaker
Yeah. what yeah But the Void an 18-point swing. like That's cool. i mean You've talked about... Lauren talked, though, about the idea of inverting power, right? As being some form of a new genre before? It would be this kind of card would be the kind of thing that would support that. like Yeah, I think we had it on a custom card we did once.
00:46:03
Speaker
yeah I think it's cool that like you can have a proactive game plan for it with sentry but it does also, you know, it will sometimes make an opponent's solo thing in a lane very bad.
00:46:19
Speaker
So like, I, I, I like that it has like different modes of play. Like, I think it's a cool design and I don't know how, good it's going to be, but like, seems, seems. It makes it good with Nomura, because it does power stuff without leaving a card there.
00:46:38
Speaker
Sorry. Or it makes good. Always like looking for Nomura things. Yeah. Also probably good against Nomura, if there's a lane that you haven't committed to and you're... True, true....said some...
00:46:50
Speaker
beefy tower there you know but if you're all in a namora you've already put like ways uh you probably have like wong in there don't know wong's less special now that we have all these other like cards that copy effects and stuff yeah it's been interesting to see him around so much lately i'm like oh yes you we used to see a lot of you didn't we you were you were quite a presence in your day wong It used to be a retreat. If someone had a wong out and all the space to play stuff and energy to play and you didn't have way to shut it down, you're out of there. And now you're not. Now you're not necessarily out of there.
00:47:31
Speaker
um yeah I really like this as a tech against opponents running a single card in a lane. Yeah, it's a cool card. Punishing that more.
00:47:43
Speaker
Punishing Orca. Fewer stupid Ironmans. That's what I think. Yeah. All right. that's ah That's September. They seem fun and cool, even if they are...
00:47:59
Speaker
They're pretty retread-y. They're retread-adjacent.
00:48:05
Speaker
They look they look fun and different overall.

Weekly Game Experiences and Deck Strategies

00:48:11
Speaker
There's still some slop-ish stuff in there, but mostly each of them has me thinking like, oh, what could I what could i do with the but that in That carnage is going to be too good.
00:48:20
Speaker
is that's all like I would be shocked if that card stays that way um in the long term. crazy Okay, on to our Week in Snap. Ben, how was your Week in Snap? And keep it snappy. Ooh, endeavoring to keep it snappy as I do when I do. I'm not setting a timer this time. I don't think I've got that much to talk about. I did play a good bit of Snap this week. Not, you know, a whole ton. But, you know, i climbed up into the late eighty s I played a lot of Triton.
00:48:58
Speaker
um Not a lot of Triton. I played a medium amount of Triton and decided I could bear no more. And then I stopped playing Triton and started winning. ah So ah last week I was, you know, it just came up organically. I was mentioning how much fun I used to have.
00:49:16
Speaker
with show low and surfer and how it really like highlighted the value of like, Hey, it's fine to play Carter in the back row. Sometimes you can actually get some cool stuff going on, playing Carter in the back row. Also opponents, not really, not really thinking about you playing Carter in the back row. Cause then they're, you know, they're, they're used to that that greedy mindset that all players, you know, have, we all want to be like getting the optimal thing, but like, Hey, sometimes the good enough is the best enough. Um, so anyway,
00:49:46
Speaker
Here's a deck called Triton was here. There have been some cards coming in and out. There's a version of this I posted in the speakeasy. i i have changed a card or two.
00:49:58
Speaker
Maybe I should compare to it to what I had there because I i want our loyalist listeners to know the the newest version and how it compares to that old version.
00:50:11
Speaker
The version I posted in the speakeasy was KittyPride, America Chavez, Surge, Jeff the Baby Dolphin, Merlin, Brood, Captain Carter, Maverick, Silver Surfer, Hope, Summer's Absorbing Man, and Sholao the Undying. I changed a couple cards. um The cards I got rid of were Surge and Jeff, and the cards that I've put in since are Cosmo and Superior Spider-Man. Gosh, yeah I just don't...
00:50:37
Speaker
feel awfully naked without a cosmo these days and right now is a great time to be playing cosmo because uh have fun with all your dumb ass infinity shots than us um anyway uh it's just uh people are playing wong earnestly non-ironically wait so you haven't been playing cosmo though Oh, well, the first version of this deck didn't have Cosmo in it, but I put Cosmo in because I just don't like leaving the house without Cosmo these days. I just, I love the the dog. He just, or, you know, depending on which version he or she, but whatever Cosmo is in your heart is the Cosmo on the card. And like, gosh, damn it. If they don't all stop on reveals like, ah wow.
00:51:23
Speaker
Yeah. it's It's a great effect. It's been around for a long time. ah it never gets old. Wow. I get a lot of Miss Minutes emotes from people who just, like, were doing the most telegraphed bullshit imaginable. And, of course, I Cosmo'd it. And they're like Miss Minutes. Meh, meh. wasting my time playing good cards against me and my predictable plays of course I'm gonna Cosmo you you you buffoon alright anyway what what don't get mad at me just cause you forgot about Cosmo
00:51:59
Speaker
nowadays everybody wanna act like they've got something to say but when they move their lips it's just a bunch of gibberish because i had Cosmo duh Okay. I think that's how the song goes.
00:52:13
Speaker
Ben, what they're angry about is they didn't have the restraint for Cosmo. I, too, was like, Cosmo would be such a great counter in this meta, but i I'm like, but but I have all these on reveals. And I'm like, but you're like, no, I don't need that. You're like, I can win without it, you know? And and then, you know, they have a righteous fury against that because they were unable i mean unable to give up the on reveals. my first thought was to not have Cosmo in this one. And like, you just, you just can't. It's like, uh, it's, it's like, uh, pushing lunch or whatever.
00:52:50
Speaker
you you just can't. Um, anyway, anyway. So yeah, the, the version with the superior, but The final version, the current version. I don't know if it's final. Card's been coming in and out. in and out It does feel weird to have only Merlin and not Surge or New Jeff. But yo, this one is Kitty Pryde, America Chavez, Merlin, Brood, Captain Carter, Maverick, Silver Surfer, Cosmo, Hope Summers, The Amazing Spider-Man, Absorbing Man, and Sholow the Undying.
00:53:21
Speaker
And um it's been working pretty well. I love Sholow. mean, like, they nerfed it, but like, it's still show that it's a very strong effect. I mean, like it was too much. I mean, yo, do you remember it released when it was both five, eight and it did plus three plus three was that? And then they took it down to five, six, still doing plus three.
00:53:45
Speaker
And now it's back at five, eight doing plus two. And like, that's, that's still a mighty strong effect. Also it's,
00:53:53
Speaker
you can get like such interesting power distribution on the last turn because it throws backwards the, the power, like it's just so much cooler than stick stick is like shirt. Stick is like more direct in some ways, but it's also so legible to your opponents. Your opponents can see exactly what direction everything is flowing with stick. Whereas like
00:54:20
Speaker
Yeah. the if If you ended with a Maverick and then you boost the Maverick, then Maverick's power is going somewhere else. And like the opponents just cannot, they're they're not ready for the the twisty combinations. I, I should have written some notes about it, but like, just get in there and play it a bit, feel it out for yourself. Showdown and surfer just gives you the biggest, like,
00:54:47
Speaker
your opponents will not be prepared for where where that power is going. It's ah it's great fun. And ah now that it has Cosmo in it, it's not losing to the things that it would lose to when it didn't. I was losing to some things that Cosmo could have stopped. So, i mean, that's the way of the world. You you lose to...
00:55:05
Speaker
gnarly on reveals and then you're like, I don't know, maybe I should get Cosmo back in the mix. And it feels great to play. I've been having a lot of fun with it. I'm i'm sorry it's not like the most interesting or exciting or like new because it it literally is like a lot of decks I played before.
00:55:22
Speaker
um The first time Show Low came around with the plus threes, I was like, I don't need Kitty Pride in this surfer deck. I can find ways to play two cards every turn. But like, I don't know.
00:55:34
Speaker
I don't know. Also, maybe it's just because like I'm loving these play patterns, but I'm finding it a lot easier to remember not to play a America Chavez on turn one for Sholao than I've ever found it to remember not to play her for Storm Horseman of Famine. That's good.
00:55:49
Speaker
I didn't like explain, but like you know the preferred way does the preferred turn two play is Kitty Pryde and America Chavez because that you know the thing about Sholao only doing plus two is that it is more important to make sure that the, the number of procs is like high. Cause like, yeah you can count to six a lot quicker with threes than with twos. And when I say a lot quicker, I mean like one more, you know, one quicker, but Hey, that, that matters. That matters. Uh, you know, and a plus eight is, uh, pretty cool.
00:56:24
Speaker
Pretty cool. If you can line that up a plus eight buff to Maverick or a captain Carter in the back row next to a Maverick, that is, That is still like the the juiciest thing. Also opponents get so confused sometimes when you end turn five.
00:56:42
Speaker
um so Sometimes it doesn't work out and like you end turn five with silver surfer into maverick on your hope lane so that you have eight energy next turn.
00:56:55
Speaker
But your opponent just thinks like, What happened there? Why did they Silver Surfer before their Maverick? But they're like not they're not ready for the show. Because that's not where people are playing show. la Right now. People are playing show. Right now. Just not in Surfer.
00:57:08
Speaker
um So they're like, what? What even is this? I don't know. Maybe some people know the show is coming. I it seems to me the evidence suggests that most opponents are not expecting the show. Surfer right now.
00:57:19
Speaker
So you should have the element of surprise if you feel like taking this.

Deck Building: Tech, Fun, and Style

00:57:23
Speaker
I feel like Kitty and Surfer is the is telegraphing Sholau. Oh, probably. What do I know? maybe i mean kitty draw I don't always draw Kitty. Kitty's not always there. Also, sometimes I play Kitty once and then like never again. i could also see Hope being like, oh, that's why.
00:57:39
Speaker
That's why Kitty is here. I remember playing your deck before and I believe I did sub in Kitty in the in the original version. You sure did? It was very fun. It was a good deck.
00:57:52
Speaker
Anywho, yeah, that's been a blast. Also, Montabi came out yesterday. i did a very long stream. i went from the opening to the the credits. I saw my name.
00:58:04
Speaker
It was fun. Whoa, cool. Yeah. I highly recommend the game. It's ah it's on sale right now. like The full price is $20, but if that's too dear, I believe it can be had for $18 right now or something.
00:58:21
Speaker
um But yeah, i think I think I went on long enough about the the joys of Cosmo and all that. So somebody else must have had a weekend snap, and I'd love to hear about it. Great. Bree, would you like to, it's customary that we leave Lauren for last, but you know, if we wanted to zag on them, I'd be fine hearing from Lauren. I just want to hear about one of my friends' weeks in SNAP.
00:58:45
Speaker
um offer to lauren to randomly go first would be a joy all right why not yeah i got a day one infinite it was super fun i climbed with a deck from somebody in the fourth location discord server goes by the name of peepopo it is a shape of deck that i am not normally very fond of it is quite high curve it is a virus deck which i've had some fun with virus like i've I messed around with Rancho and Fisk last season, but this is the first deck I have ever liked Shadowlands Daredevil in I never really liked the idea that he thickened your deck, and I tried him anyway, and he was fine. And I know his stats on Third Party Tracker said he was good, but I just did not like how he felt.
00:59:30
Speaker
um But here you have King E-Tree, Adam Warlock, and Crystal, who are all... drawing, and holy smokes, this Daredevil gets to 15 power or more on a regular basis, and it is beautiful. Your opponents do not expect him to get that big. um Additionally, you have Virus, because...
00:59:51
Speaker
virus goes in these types of decks it gives you something to keep playing it gets you a way to get rid of starbrand's bad starbrand's downside and it also helps you get cards like fisk and every now and then daredevil up to 10 power so that you can discard so a discount scar And then you have Crossbones, who's just a big guy, Cosmic Ghost Rider, Galactus First Steps, and Sasquatch.
01:00:21
Speaker
Had a lot of fun with it. um The original had... cool obsidian in the cosmic ghost rider spot. And I tried a bunch of things there. It seemed like overkill to me to have two of the four tens. um I really liked Namorita, but by the time I got to the nineties, I felt like I needed some tech, which is also not very Lauren of me, but you know, there was a lot of, there was a lot of nasty stuff going around. So, so that's where CGR came in as my ultimate a way to cross the finish line.
01:00:52
Speaker
Check it out. I'll have it i'll have it in the show notes or video description. I have also... oh go ahead. because I also played this deck. So like, I would love to, because you, I got it from you and it's great. Like you said, because when I, at first glance you look it, it's like, oh, it's a techno organic virus deck, but it's not, it's not built around that card at all. It's just a tool. Like you said, how clever to use it to get it. The first time you're just like, oh, you get Fizz Cup to 10 to bring your scar down. Like it's so fun to use the cards in that way. Right? Yeah. And to get shanged and you still win, that happens a lot in this deck. You're putting out so much power and only Daredevil is susceptible Sheldon.
01:01:41
Speaker
sha Thank you. To Shadow King, right? And how fun is it to have your one-two opener King Eitri comes out, and then you Shadow Daredevil and then activate it right away? Immediately pull out demon. really mostly only played... Yeah, Eitri mostly with, I don't know, I guess briefly Loki, but Thor kind of stuff. It's just... It's so many... mini cards and like different ways and it's so interesting our experiences so like when you gave me the deck it had legion in it in the place of of cosmic ghost rider which was amazing because there's so much magic around right i killed with this like i also wrote it to the And at the 90s, I also left the deck because I missed tech.
01:02:34
Speaker
I'm like, this has been so fun. And I was just winning enough. But then got to a point where it's like, I need tech. But to me, Legion, right? That was the spot. That was the spot for tech was so crucial to the deck that I like left the deck.
01:02:49
Speaker
And ah funnily enough, but that's later. But anyway, I just wanted to share because I also had a hell of fun with this deck. For a lot of cards that you've seen and you've played in other decks, this utilizes them in different ways. Like Sasquatch isn't, um you know, like isn't in a bounce deck or, this kind of stuff. It's so fun. And it's, it's you know, it's got, I guess, Techno Organic Vibes may be one of their own cards, but it's got a lot of like older budget cards. So like, hells yeah to this deck. It was great fun. Okay. Okay. Back to you. Back to your weekend set. also needed to jump in there. yeah So you said you took out Neymarita, but like, how was she feeling before that? Cause like, it's such a cool card. I just haven't played her. She came out and i I got her, but I just haven't put her in anything. I thought she was a lot of fun. i was just, yeah, I was losing a combo. So I think that's when I swapped in Legion. um
01:03:50
Speaker
And she doesn't synergize with Daredevil, which was also... Oh, I bet that's a point of friction for sure. I was thinking of other things to to replace Namorita with, and and then... i think it might have been Pipopo herself, but somebody suggested, like, oh, if you put in Legion or Cosmic Ghost Rider, those would actually play nice with Daredevil. I'm like, okay, yeah, that's probably the right way to go. It is fairly important to get Daredevil up to 10 so that you could discount Scar. Yeah.
01:04:20
Speaker
But yeah, Namorita, this is one of the decks I have enjoyed Namorita in the most because you have so much draw power. So you're getting a lot of discounts. And either discounting Scar by one or discounting your demons,
01:04:36
Speaker
means you can, it almost always means you get to play an extra card on the last turn. And that extra card, you know, that goes really far. If you happen to discount techno organic virus, every single copy also inherits the discount. Oh, nice. Yeah. That's very cool.
01:04:51
Speaker
Um, anyway, this deck was kind of a lesson for me. Cause it was both like, Oh, I put a small spin on it. We're only talking about one card in the deck that keeps swapping out. Um, although I know other people who were playing with the crossbones slot, um,
01:05:06
Speaker
But when I first saw it, I wanted to make changes to it right away. And this is not an unusual ah impulse of mine. I like taking somebody else's deck and making changes right away to make it mine, or because there's a card I don't like, or a synergy, I'm like, that's questionable. But this one, I was like, you know what? I'm just gonna give it a try. It makes me really uncomfy that Cole Obsidian's here, when there's King E3 is the only one, besides the demons that I might get from Daredevil. And I'm just like, that just seems really awkward. And like, really, is there enough to justify Sasquatch? and But it was like, yeah, actually it kind of worked. And so, like, let me use cards I haven't used in a long time. Let me think about them in a different way. It was like, okay, yeah, this is actually pretty cool.
01:05:43
Speaker
um Final thing I'll say Virus, something that's very cool about it that got people a lot is it is a way to add extra power on a lane on the last. Like, I'm going to add six power or nine power to this lane, but that's also adding two power to another lane. And that makes it harder for people to, to you know, to make sure that they're putting enough power there to swing it ah The rest of my week has been labbing Thanos and prepping content for Marvel Snap. I did, you know, I'm writing like hot locations and mission ah weekend missions and stuff like that for fourth location.
01:06:21
Speaker
um Yeah, just, you know, just, just chilling, just having a good time. That is, I'm having fun in Snap and stressed out in real life because of my job situation.
01:06:35
Speaker
of Yep, so that's how I'm managing my life right now. Rii, your turn. Okay, oh that was actually so good that you went first because I didn't see you were also playing the stack. ah Yeah, it was super fun. So I ended playing, I was like sick and...
01:06:56
Speaker
um this is leading to say that I think Snap is actually doing like kind of fun right now, which I feel like is what this under or that this season is being successful. And yeah, I think so because while I was sick, I might have done if Snap wasn't fun, I wouldn't have played so much Snap. I wouldn't have played.
01:07:15
Speaker
found another outlet, um, for being the sick, but instead I played a ton of stuff because, like i said, it was fun, and part of that already discussed earlier, but I think another part of that, too, as much as i complained about certain things about, uh, gun-toting Thanos, right, and we don't have a shorthand for,
01:07:36
Speaker
ah like front frat Fractured Frontier Thanos, which I'm not going to say every time. So, um, Cowboy, Thanos. Okay. So, like, ah one thing that they get right, though, not just a complaint, is it showcases what's great about, like, digital card games, like about Snap is that this kind of a card where you have all these facts that are loading for an end turn of release is like kind of obnoxious to play in a physical card game, right? And magic, like this is my problem with magic gathering. They have so many cards now with texts and things you're tracking.
01:08:16
Speaker
Right. And, and the benefit of digital is it's like, it keeps track of a lot of stuff for you. So this effect of like, you know, the loading up the revolver, you know, for this turn effect, it's fun. Cause you don't have, you know, the side cost of having to like, uh, like pull off all the triggers yourself and, and like, that's what that's what they need that's what we've been missing we've been criticizing the ai slobness of it but it's like but that's the thing about buff things it's not fun it's like it's not celebrating what the digital can do versus the physical card game so like you know good job like
01:09:01
Speaker
Good job bringing that back. um So I did, like i said, i ah played up through to the 90s with Lauren's deck, and then i missed, or, you know, the deck I got from Lauren.
01:09:19
Speaker
um and then ah yeah And then I, like I said, I won a tech. um So I sat down down down that deck and I had been wanting, right? I'd been playing against all of this Thanos and I had been wanting to to try it out, right? I'd also looked into, I gambled on rolling a season pack and I got Jane Foster, who I like, you know, had...
01:09:43
Speaker
previously stated. i was, like, really interested in playing. and then i I did end up later just straight out buying Psylocke with tokens. cause I think she's good in because she fit in the deck. Because then I started building deck, which was fun. And I did build while I was climbing to infinity, um which made me lose, like, I lost three ranks juggling around cards, but then once I hit it, right, once I hit it,
01:10:13
Speaker
Boom, all the, you know, all the way up. And ah I started with, where I kind of started with it was my my old Galactus first steps that had Wicked. I miss playing Wicked with Quicksilver and Domino. And that original deck had gotten like so warped and out. Now it was like an Aurora deck.
01:10:37
Speaker
So I started there and this deck was so fun because I started. Usually what happens is I start with fun cards and then I start taking them out for tech because just miss, I just need that tech. And I missed tech.
01:10:53
Speaker
Right? But that's how you wint that's how you win. that Because like a lot of people, I think, they're like, am I going to hit my sauce? Then I stay. i'm not going to hit it So I leave. And for me, it's like, but I want to win no matter what. you know I want to feel like I could.
01:11:08
Speaker
I don't want to retreat in that ever. I mean, i do, though. But like... um Yeah. What I get annoyed? I'm like, i when i when I see like I could have won, but I'm like, oh, I misread them and I should have played my cards differently. I should have seen that they would play there because of this.
01:11:26
Speaker
Right? That's fine with me. But when it's like, I never had a chance to win, I'm like, what needs to change in this deck so that I could win? You know? um And that's how it usually goes. And I end with tech. But this I started with way more tech because that deck was, it was like a good cards heavy tech deck with like extra energy to play it.
01:11:47
Speaker
And i started that way, and then I ended up having to take it out for fun cards, because one Mobius used to be a key to this deck. Like, Mobius pretty much, any time I took out Mobius, ended putting him back in. But have you noticed Mobius feels less good lately in taking up an entire slot in your deck?
01:12:06
Speaker
Not to say that he's not ever useful. and That's what saying about it. He's a commitment to like the Mobius lifestyle. like He's you know he doesn't do it like you know he's not going to give you tempo and stuff.
01:12:19
Speaker
he takes up a de slot he i mean he very But he used to be devastating and worse. His stats used to be better. He used to be... He felt free at 2-3, right? At 3-3... At 3-3, you really have to be like... He was. He was 2-3 for a little bit. I think he's also been 3-4.
01:12:40
Speaker
And he was very briefly on reveal, and that was silly. Yeah. I think nowadays you pretty much like you run him in Pixie and that's kind of it because that's the only deck that can proactively use them.
01:12:55
Speaker
Yeah. um Yeah. i So I ended up taking out and then I'm like, all right, maybe, you know, maybe it's time. We got the Jane Foster. I didn't put her in because just tech felt more worth with it. But I put her in and that's when I bought Psylocke.
01:13:12
Speaker
Psylocke is so key. Like, it's so good to make, like, the problem with Galactus' first steps, right? It's just, like, if you can, like, just regularly make him five, it's, like, a backup or in addition to Wiccan. Oh, so good.
01:13:28
Speaker
Um... Same with Thanos sometimes. But, like, they're really fun. Like, quick draw is fun when it hits, right? And you get the the extra stuff. I took out... um I took out... It's funny that you put... ah Ghost, Cosmic Ghost Rider when you needed tech. To me, I left the deck. I had, and I also though originally had Cosmic Ghost Rider in this deck, but I needed Legion. i needed Legion. And it it felt where every time I was like, I would have won with Legion.
01:14:01
Speaker
I would have won with Legion. And I feel like Legion has to be like maybe my favorite or most played card, to be honest. And of course, crossed, right? I crossed infinity line.
01:14:12
Speaker
With Legion! With, like, with ah just the classic old school. They had magicked, and Legion'd them, and this is the kind of deck where it's not for sure got, you know? Like, they're not expecting it. There's not a Merlin. I, you know, I wanted it to be hidden. and Um, but i did end up after I took him out putting in red guardian because I still needed that tech.
01:14:34
Speaker
And I just found like, red garden still handles that best kind of like all around thing. um and I also have shang in for it, but like, it's satisfying to pull. Oh, and like, I'm so like copycat is amazing. um,
01:14:52
Speaker
Just in general. Like, right, the info you get, I have i have copycatted someone's zombie galacti and, like, snapped them immediately, you know? like and they don't know why. They thought maybe it was the location. Maybe it was, like, right, that happens. Just the info alone sometimes is worth it. And then sometimes you're stealing, like, such good stuff. think And then sometimes it's terrible. like But... um ah But, like, this is...

Thanos Strategy and Rank Climbing

01:15:23
Speaker
Thanos brings so much to this deck because I was playing Galactus First Steps with Quicksilver, with Domino, guarantee your Wiccan line while then having those be your only one and two costs in the entire deck. And now Thanos gives you a more reward. It's not being rewarding enough to do that, but now because they have the quick draw added, it brings them back to life. It makes them more worthwhile and uh you know and i got rainbow crackle on my wiccan from playing this deck so please feel free to be jealous okay um
01:16:05
Speaker
So, yeah, this was really satisfying to like to, like, you know, I was trying out cards. When I got it together and it, like, clicked and I climbed, it was so satisfying. Like, that's the Snap experience, right? Like, you could it's only 12 cards, you know. You shuffle some things in and out and it works and ah you get there. And, yeah, I haven't gotten an Infinity this fast in a really long time because I usually don't play enough and bother. And then, yeah, my ah my last ah note was that I've also been playing a high Voltage.
01:16:46
Speaker
um I wanted Beach Death, and I did get her finally in the first roll. After I missed so many of these stupid portal variants. You know, my one shot didn't get the variant I want. Yeah.
01:16:58
Speaker
Okay, and I busted out because I played this one before. It's Scott's High Voltage. His fun deck that's just about having... Because that's High Voltage. like If you're playing to like super serious win, you're doing it wrong because it's it's a silly mode. You should have i can't believe how many people are. emotes I get. Are you kidding me? Why are you sweating so hard in High Voltage?
01:17:25
Speaker
wild. like Winning doesn't even get you these are people who emo missions. They're not right in the head. Yeah, exactly. Most of the missions, you are building a different sort of deck if that's what you're chasing.
01:17:38
Speaker
Anyway. Yeah, so have a lot of fun. and this stuff It's like all about Cersei transforming things, doing silly stuff. I love it because with enough energy you can get up to a lot of shenanigans you couldn't normally get up to.
01:17:54
Speaker
and The thing I did, though, is like Lauren, i see a deck and sometimes and I'm like, I got to change something. And for me, it was like Cobra. I first thought he had Cobra in this deck. I don't get why, because it's high voltage and like there's all these, you know, created cards. And I was

High Voltage Deck Dynamics

01:18:16
Speaker
like, oh, good. You know, he'll get some play, you know, because I never play Cobra. I'm like, good for Cobra. So I did try it, but it just felt so unexcited. It's like this deck is fun, and Cobra is just not fun at all to me. Whoa, i don't tell Wombat Combat.
01:18:35
Speaker
How is it for Wanda Combat? It's like, no, explain it. explain Look to me in my eyes and tell me Cobra is a fun card to play. And have voltage anyway. It sucks.
01:18:48
Speaker
Okay, so I would like to advocate ah if you know if Scott listens, this is my pitch. You should immediately remove it and play it. The better, the the improved version of your deck that I am now gifting by telling you is ah you should you have to add Chameleon. Chameleon is so much fun in this deck because the problem with Chameleon is it's like you're very limited by the amount of energy. You know you have to play Chameleon with other cards because it has to be in the same turn. And High Voltage is where you have all the energy. So you can like Odin Chameleon, Chameleon Odin. You can, you know, Chameleon White Tiger. Yeah, there's so many things you can copy. you can Gambit Chameleon Odin and like get rid of all the junk that fucking high voltage gave you that you didn't want to play out. Like because Gambit's in this deck.
01:19:48
Speaker
chameleon. I'm just saying. And when it how often are you playing chameleon else? I know you're saying like, this is Cobra's shot. He doesn't get a lot of chances. High voltage should be his thing. And I would argue chameleon.
01:20:01
Speaker
Chameleon is more fun and that's who you want to hang out with. That's who you want to spend your time with. Do it, Scott. yeah At least try it.
01:20:13
Speaker
Okay. um That is, I did and did lots of snaps.

Snap Game Triumphs and Community Engagement

01:20:18
Speaker
That was my week in Snap. Awesome. a Reminder, the secret homework was assigned by Rhi. It was to make a playlist for your favorite deck or the f frackier Fractured Frontier season as a whole um or a favorite deck.
01:20:35
Speaker
We're pushing that to next week because we did the data mines today. i I guess we close. We will be... I assume all of you know because our outro music is very short.
01:20:48
Speaker
We talk about stuff after the end of the show. And today we are ah we're going to talk about Brand New Day. So if you don't want spoilers, turn it off after the music. Come back and listen to our thoughts later. We have all seen it and we will not be holding back. um We never do. if you think sometimes we we flag things as like spoiler safe or minimal sp spoilers. anyway No, I just meant like in general ah all all three of us are you know we we just we we never hold back. we We fight with all our strength and ah you know aura aura aura and yeah we just don't hold back. where we're Yeah.
01:21:29
Speaker
Yeah. We just don't hold back. Except for responsibly commensurate to our amount of power you know. Due to responsibility. Wow. But like, you know how like, yeah sometimes like, ah you know, in for for instance, in in Kingdom Hearts one,
01:21:49
Speaker
Hercules confides to Phil like, no, I just let Sora Donald and Goofy beat me. You know, I well wasn't i wasn't really going hard. We never pull that shit. if If you beat the hosts of Snap on this, you fucking earned it because we never hold back except when it's spoilers about Spider-Man Brand New Day. We only do that after the credits. This is very exceptional, weird behavior out of character for us. And I wanted to emphasize that.
01:22:10
Speaker
Okay. May the record show. We are not ones to pull punches. um If you liked what you heard and haven't already, like and subscribe. We got two more episodes until the season finale. Not 100% sure what that looks like yet, but we're we're

Spider-Man Movie Spoilers and Discussions

01:22:25
Speaker
cooking. um you know, come hang out with us in the speakeasy. It's our little corner of discord. Instructions are in the show notes or video description. We're probably part of the snap judgments network where you can listen to other great shows like snap decisions, which is as far as I know, not going on hiatus. That's by Joe on Mondays. And ah yeah, tune in next week. Same snap time, same snap channel.
01:22:48
Speaker
All right. Spoiler horn has been fired. It sounds like a fog horn. And we're ready to get into it. Did you like the show? Yes.
01:23:00
Speaker
I? Okay. should i Should I start? I don't want to. Okay. Yes. i Let it rip. I loved this. Okay. And I have not been excited. i just have not been excited about movies lately. I kind of forgot they could be good. like loved movie like i was a film major and the reason i did that because i would sit in a movie and like for like weeks like a month afterwards sometimes a movie would affect like my entire world view you know it'd blow my mind like i want to create that you know i want to live in that world and like i don't know i guess they're just i mean that's not true i remember like i connected with thunderbolts like there's some movies but it's like i heard like rules The writing for Supergirl was disappointing. Like, it wasn't that great a movie, and I didn't bother to see it. And I just, like, haven't been excited about movies. And for the same reason, like, in the trailers, I think, too, was ah all of the trailers were for, like, sequels of movies. I can't think of an original, a trailer that was for, like, a standalone movie that wasn't, like, Dune Part. I haven't seen any of the Dunes. so I got a trailer for The End of Oak Street.
01:24:15
Speaker
which uh oh i do want to see because it's dinosaurs okay yes oh i do want to see dinosaurs on the big screen i'll probably wait to see how good it is but i kind of want to see dinosaurs screen okay but right i didn't get and i didn't get a trailer for that was all like you know like sequels for stuff i hadn't seen originally And, um yeah, so I kind of came in and I was seeing it because it's just like I see all the Marvel movies.
01:24:44
Speaker
And I eventually see all the DC movies usually when they come out. Stuff I don't go to see all. But, like, I do tend to see all the Marvel movies in theater.

Spider-Man's Emotional Impact

01:24:54
Speaker
I'm a huge comic fan, right? It's not always about how good I think they are. And um and I sat down and this movie for me did, okay, with Spider-Man?
01:25:07
Speaker
Spider-Man, right, has always been a teenage superhero, was his deal, right? He's dealing with teenager stuff, issues, in a way that so many other superheroes aren't. And he was my first superhero I loved. He was my gateway to comics. Ben has talked about this too. I know, like, Ultimate Spider-Man was, like, such a gateway comic. you know, for me, um for a lot of people. And um I love Spider-Man. And then I eventually moved, right? My first tattoo was a Batman. Like, I think I started growing older and And transitioning from, like, Spider-Man's, like, relatable viewpoint into this idea of, like, I don't know, gaining a personal mission like you do when you're figuring out who you are and then, like, trying to strip away all the parts of you that don't match that. Like, that made sense to me at the That some Batman-type yes.
01:26:08
Speaker
Right? And I, like, connected really hard to that. And I loved Batman for so long and Spider-Man. I always still loved, right? But i I no longer felt like I connected to in the way I did Batman as an adult.
01:26:23
Speaker
And in the comics, they have tried to take Spider-Man to adulthood. and it's never connected for me, even with some, like, decent, right? Like, they made him a CEO with his own company, but he can't, like, weird choice figure out that with the Spider-Man. It's, like, doesn't feel real. It doesn't connect. Like, him as an adult...
01:26:45
Speaker
just didn' And i figured it's like maybe it just doesn't belong there. Maybe Peter Parker just doesn't become an adult. He just, you know, remains perpetually ah teenager and he just belongs to them. Because I didn't see an adult version of Peter Parker that I related to that wasn't like the multiversal, like, you know, like Peter that was never going to be like. Like Peter B. Parker from Spider-Verse.

Adult Spider-Man's Real-Life Challenges

01:27:14
Speaker
Yeah, so like so I thought, but this movie this movie was an adult Spider-Man that I related to so hard. And maybe he's also for the youth, I'm not young enough to speak for them or to say,
01:27:32
Speaker
But like I connected so hard. I pulled out. I have been using it I've been using like my kid we've we've established that I hold on to some things way too long and use them, particularly car related things. My keychain is this metal Spider-Man keychain from 2007. I looked at the year, I flipped it over, I looked at the year in the back, like, that I'm still using.
01:27:58
Speaker
And it was so meaningful for me to have this Spider-Man that's, like, I get that. He's, like, he's been Spider-Man. He's been accomplished. He's done his thing. But, like, things have changed, you know? like he's...
01:28:16
Speaker
You know, he's lost some people that used to be around all the time. Friends have moved away. Like, his body chemistry is changing, you know, in ways that, like, have been fucking him up. Have you ever have been an adult, like, having a panic attack for the very first time in middle age, right? Like, it's scary going through this stuff. And it was this...
01:28:40
Speaker
Spider-Man. i don't know. I just wasn't expecting this movie to hit me hard. I was just like, oh, I like Tom Holland. I like these Spider-Man movies. I'll enjoy it. And instead, ah the other moment when Jean Grey sits down and she gets to hear May's speech, she gets to have what she never had, right? There's so many people, i think, who It's relatable because um for her, she is. She's like the kind of the orphan that's like abused and on the run. The kind of like fantasy that children have of an orphan. Because the reality for a lot of kids is... is you don't want to complain maybe because you were fed, right? And you were clothed and you went to school and a lot of things that like there are kids that don't have, but that didn't mean your parents were good, you know? That didn't mean you ever got sat down and told that who you were was great and like things are scary, but you're like the speech she gave, right? Just to so many like people that never got to hear it and the difference That can give someone from becoming from what Jean Grey, right? In her Scarlet Witch, kind of in her lashing out, they sure like to make you fear a woman who's going through a crisis in Marvel, right? But like, you know, to Peter Parker, right, who was also going through a crisis that had the speech. I don't know. There are just so many things that hit for me.

Cinematic and Thematic Depth in Spider-Man

01:30:15
Speaker
But i i have more to say, but I've launched into a long thing. I would like to hear some of your thoughts first, please, about your initial impressions.
01:30:27
Speaker
every review. Well, I had numerous thoughts. I, you know, I should have written some notes.
01:30:39
Speaker
I'm going to start with my shallowest and silliest thoughts first. I was really disappointed when i was I was learning about the themes and stuff that were going to be tackled in this movie, you know, like from like interviews and stuff. I'm hearing about how like Peter Parker is going through some mutations and they might be weird and maybe maybe maybe they'll be wonderful. I was a little disappointed. This motherfucker never sprouted any extra arms.
01:31:06
Speaker
I thought if we were ever going to see six armed Spider-Man on screen, it was going to be in this movie. I totally thought we were man-fightering. Yeah. um Other thoughts I had this one.
01:31:22
Speaker
i mean, this is a compliment. This like I feel like that there's sometimes when people are like, it look it It reminded me of how video games look. They mean that as a bad thing. i thought this movie seemed to be taking some pretty clear inspiration from, you know, there've been about like 40 years of fucking Spider-Man video games at this point. Like you can't ignore Spider-Man video games and say that that's not Spider-Man that is. And I was seeing the visual language of the insomniac Spider-Man, honestly, even the visual language of like earlier Spider-Man's, uh, in some like the web stuff.
01:31:56
Speaker
Um, Yeah, I thought it was like really cool. i was i was like i I smiled when I was like, this reminds me of Spider-Man games I've played. Because like i'm not i'm not I'm not a shallow only games kind of kind of Spider-Man fan. I love Spider-Man in all all media. And i just like it it tickled me to see that part of it.
01:32:21
Speaker
And like here's the thing. Those Spider-Man games, that Insomniac Spider-Man... There's some good ideas. You do want to be, you do want to be copying insomniac Spider-Man's homework.
01:32:32
Speaker
Um, or, or taking inspiration from it. Such i get it a good idea to pull from that because comics are generally stationary, right? I, I, There are like animated comics, but mostly speaking, they are stationary and there's like this long history of that. And they can communicate, know, beautiful, like art can communicate dynamics, but not in the same way. Right. There hasn't been people solving the same like problems of animation that, that the video game people have done. So I think it's so smart to, cut to take inspiration from, from that degree of action.
01:33:05
Speaker
Other shallow thoughts I had. Oh, I'm just always happy to see Tramiel Tillman. um He knows how to make his eyes kind.

Spider-Man's Role as a Hero and Community Connection

01:33:14
Speaker
ah i I don't know if y'all seen Severance, but ah he plays the.
01:33:21
Speaker
Oh, my gosh. The singular. you recognize his fear Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. He's a fucking great, fantastic actor. I heard him interviewed on Bullseye.
01:33:32
Speaker
Just yeah. Yeah. put Tramiel Tillman in everything is my feeling. Um, was a little disappointed. He never got to dance cause he dances real well.
01:33:42
Speaker
Yeah. As we've learned in two different episodes of severance. Um, so the, the, do I have any other really shallow thoughts to fire off? I was, ah i was like a little, there were things I liked about the Jean gray stuff there. There were, ah there were a few things that like,
01:34:02
Speaker
it seemed a little bit disjointed and like tacked on sort of, but like in other ways it did feel like woven in with, you know, the other aspects and thoughts that the the movie had cooking. Like it, it sort of, it sort of made sense on the plate.
01:34:20
Speaker
It's yeah. I don't know. I felt a little bit. Yeah. Most, mostly I liked that. um You know, I thought,
01:34:31
Speaker
Yeah, I much preferred this I don't remember you storyline with Mary Jane to the don't remember you like that storyline from Guardians of the Galaxy 3. That was like annoying. This one has so much more empathy. And made me hate the Star Lord character. And I was like, so I was like so frustrated that Gamora had to put up with his bullshit.
01:34:56
Speaker
I was like, you don't you don't you don't deserve this. Why? Yeah. But like this was this seemed more. um Real and and i treated everyone like real people with real feelings and stuff.
01:35:12
Speaker
Yeah. Hop in there. Okay, can I add to your shallow thoughts? I had a very shallow... Because i also thought about, like, the weird similarity of this storyline without... Just as being a weird thing that someone would, like, completely forget, you know? Because it's as a non-realistic thing. And was like, is this just about, like...
01:35:34
Speaker
writers or just the general humanities inability to move on from like a relationship that they're still in love with like no we have to make like we just have to imagine that she just it's not her it's not even her she doesn't remember any of it because if she did she would still love you It's so like, when this was it was well done, you know, but it's just like, why is this completely unrealistic thing a repeated storyline? It's just about our inability as a species to move on.
01:36:10
Speaker
of relationship. well, we all struggle with loss and things. The loss of relationships and like, sure, you want to put a fantastical element like Magic Forgettings on it. and I don't know. I'm not surprised that we see this sort of thing.
01:36:25
Speaker
Yeah, it has a lot of elements that are relatable. Yeah, for sure. I appreciate that they... talked like that like MJ got to talk about it, right? Like she acknowledged, like, I can see you loved her and this was really painful, but I don't remember you at all.
01:36:43
Speaker
And therefore I don't love you. And you know, maybe that's like in some ways that's holding the audience's hand a little too much, but I love that there wasn't just like this magical fix. I love that the true love's kiss didn't solve the problem. I am amazed that they, that, that ah Peter stayed away for four years. Like, and, and they show that so well, how excruciating that must've been and how he's just burying himself in his work and instead of dealing with it.
01:37:08
Speaker
Well, it another she of in a healthy way Fucking loved seeing Jon Bernthal Punisher-ing around as Cuddly Punisher this time. Wasn't so wild about the one-shot Punisher on the Disney+. plus I was like, we're not having as much fun as I like to be having. And like, i i do this this Cuddly Punisher that we sometimes see on the television shows and in this movie, like...
01:37:36
Speaker
i I much prefer him to more grim versions of The Punisher. That's that's what I like. Even though he did sort of he did sort of shoot Peter there. ah You know.
01:37:49
Speaker
And still. ah Cuddly. His role was handled really well. On time. Right. yeah Yeah. It was. And it's like, of course he he came to help him and Jean Grey just immediately. Yeah.
01:38:03
Speaker
That's what would happen. like He's the Punisher, just a man. you know and it's it's also i loved how they did mind control. ah fun was that? okay so there There were a lot of things that just like felt a lot they felt very comic book-y to me. like you know This like, oh Frank, stop trying to kill everybody. like like This is like a dynamic I've seen in the comics. and like just Even the...
01:38:30
Speaker
and, and the Hulk shows up for a minute and like, Oh, black widow's here. Like it felt like comics, you know, and like, well, I'm going to talk to my friend who is an important character in this other story. You know, like it, it just, it felt comic bookie in a way that comic book movies don't always feel, or if they do feel it's not in like a satisfying way that works and like makes for good stories and like, uh,
01:38:57
Speaker
coherent narrative you know like uh the wider world of this movie like felt well used i loved them being like guest characters in spider-man story instead of like all of them trying to share the bill as the avengers or whatever right like they were still there they were still present the interactions were fun but it was still like centered on spider-man i thought it was handled super well i am somebody who avoids trailers so it was fun seeing surprise guest characters me too ah maybe guest is is not giving them enough credit because some of them have bigger roles than others also i was like are there really are we really gonna see that much ninja action from the hand because like they were very present in the the marketing materials and things yeah and like turns out yeah yep also interesting choice for the marvel snap brand new day spider-man to be like
01:39:51
Speaker
little punk baby Spider-Man, not Spider-Punk, but like little punk baby Spider-Man. Uh, when in fact the Spider-Man we get in Spider-Man brand new day is actually like height of his powers, like, uh, the perfect Spider-Man, so to speak. Like, uh, you know, he's, uh,
01:40:10
Speaker
I don't know. he's He's glowing in magic at the end. He's fighting the Hulk. He's never had. and you know Perfect situational awareness. and just you know he's He's more like S-tier Spider-Man. Yeah. Well, that's you.
01:40:28
Speaker
I liked how happy... Because, right, there is a lot of darkness, right? And there's not a romantic storyline that pays off. um There's not a happy ending for Bruce. Like, it's... Right? It's a pretty... us It's pretty dark for Spider-Man. So where they bring it to light, I actually...
01:40:53
Speaker
with Right with the people of New York City, you know, getting to walk through and getting to just experience the love that the people have for It's funny. It really impacted. It hit me Well, normally don't like...
01:41:12
Speaker
The disconnected. It's like there's no payoff with, okay, well, he gets it with Ned, right? But like, there's no payoff with the characters that we've seen, right? These are just the general population that itself, right? There's been other Spider-Man movies where like the general New Yorker population has almost been a character. And I would say that hasn't really been the case, right, in this movie. And yet this was still such a payoff for me. And I think just part of it is the times, part of the place my life. Because it's like, because that's like acknowledging like the gratitude of the people who heroes, right? Who are, we're in as hard like to stand up.
01:41:58
Speaker
for what's right and to like fight against super villains. Right. And so to him to get to experience, yes, these people, because a lot of the times to put out on ah on a smaller level, right. Then the kind of the big epic scary things out there is like a lot of people in their jobs, um so many jobs, whatever have their jobs are helping other people, whether it's like cooking food for other people or like helping people schedule their medical appointments, whatever it is, it's a small thing that helps someone else, right? and you have no connection to the good that does for other people. And sometimes it's a lot of good and you don't see that you don't have this personal. It's why influencers like to go out and spend money and they get to like be there and see it and get the gratifying reward of seeing someone get really happy because of me, because I did that. Right. But so many of us,
01:42:53
Speaker
are disconnected, right? The way evil is disconnected and they do that on purpose and separate themselves out from having to feel bad. You're also by technology and many other factors separated out from getting to feel good from any good that you do.
01:43:10
Speaker
right And here's this moment where someone gets to go and walk among the good that he's done and the love that he has. And he needs that, right? He's been through some so much. And they've just shown the whole movie is him handling it better than like literally everyone you know around him. He has to be the one to make that right choice over and over again, right? And fail and screw up and still have to like...
01:43:40
Speaker
Pull it together for everyone. and like, finally he gets, he gets to see what that is, which is not a personal reward for himself, but this like expert, this greater good,

Spider-Man's Action and Choreography

01:43:54
Speaker
right? All these people whose lives are better. And he gets to at least experience that love for that. I don't know. So it was just like meaningful for me in a way that normally i would be like,
01:44:08
Speaker
it's it would feel a bit disconnected, but, you know, I don't know. A lot of things are about me and how I'm feeling in particular moment, I guess. But I did love this movie. I have a related or somewhat overlapping reading of that set.
01:44:23
Speaker
You know, like in Spider-Man 2, of course, there's the famous, oh, you gotta go through us New Yorkers if you want to get to Spidey! You know, like post 9-11 solidarity. We're all coming together and this is our Spider-Man, even if he's been slandered and stuff and he's getting his ass kicked by Doc Ock.
01:44:41
Speaker
And, you know, in ah Into the Spider-Verse, you know, there's a great outpouring of gratitude after the death of ah Chris Pine's Spider-Man and stuff. And like... we like We like to see people being grateful to Spider-Man, and I think it's because we wish we could be thanking all the people who are doing the self-sacrificing. good I think... I don't know. I think we all wish we could thank Spider-Man and the Spider-Man-like people in our own world, I guess. I don't know.
01:45:10
Speaker
that's That's just ah an observation I have. Because like they do keep coming back to it. We do like to... We we like to watch people thank Spider-Man. And... um Yeah.
01:45:21
Speaker
I think one thing that that does is it grounds it, right? Like it makes something that Spider-Man does well is it's more street level than, than the big stuff. And that's something that I loved about this movie. I mean, it has some fantastical elements of course, but it's not cosmic scale, right? It stays local. It's about his relationships with a few people he loves. It's about saving his city and, you know, saving a girl who, who is, uh,
01:45:50
Speaker
in trouble. And I, I, I just, it, it so much more meaningful. It's so much easier to, to relate to. And it makes the stakes more interesting.
01:46:02
Speaker
And like his essential quality is that like, he will always choose to put the weight of the world on his, on his shoulders. And like, that's, that's more interesting at, at a more personal level than it is at the, we must save the multiverse from,
01:46:19
Speaker
Who the fuck? nick ah Yeah. I don't even know. You know?
01:46:27
Speaker
Small potatoes, you know? But, like, that's still lot of potatoes. Meager potatoes. to to To quote Black Widow herself.
01:46:40
Speaker
Yep. At one point. Meager potatoes.
01:46:46
Speaker
had just a few other thoughts. ah The pacing I loved. I thought it was very respectful of my time without going all the way to the like TikTok ADHD generation that can't pay attention anymore. Two and a half hours on the dot.
01:46:59
Speaker
Right. but it But it also didn't feel like it was... I mean, that there's there's not a downtime, really. Like, that's it's all, there's, even when it's slower on the action, there's still plot development.
01:47:13
Speaker
And I thought it was great. I loved that pacing. It was difficult to find a time to run to the restroom. I use an app called RunPee. And it tells you when to go. and this one's like, it doesn't really have any good times, but here's the best one because I can easily explain this important conversation. It's like, okay. um Yeah, it's a great app, by the way. Run P. I'm not, you know. I was really proud You got to remember to update it before the movie.
01:47:43
Speaker
Like, I sometimes I'm like, I've got Run-P on my phone, except like I haven't opened it since the last time I saw a movie. And it's like, ah yeah I remember all the movies from like six months ago I'm like, oh no, I need relevant right now information. oh Yeah. um But yeah, other shallow thoughts I had. ah i thought the story pretty good. Oh, sorry, I didn't know you weren't done.
01:48:06
Speaker
I saw, I liked that we were having... reinterpretations of the tom holland spider-man theme that we have heard so much in the previous three movies but like they were not you know hitting us over the head with like the triumphant sound of it this time it was more like uh you know thoughtful and you know maybe a little maybe a little bit sad and stuff but uh that was the tom holland spider-man theme we kept hearing as uh you know sorrowful piano music or pensive piano music. And ah yeah, i i thought I thought that stuff was good.
01:48:44
Speaker
I feel like I've got one or two more super shallow thoughts to toss out. Oh, if for some reason... you have listened to this entire conversation and have not yet seen the movie and are just like, well, I'm fine with spoilers. I'm still going to see this movie.
01:48:58
Speaker
Uh, since you're so fine with spoilers, I'll tell you, don't, don't feel and enough. If you want to watch the whole credits, I always encourage people to watch the whole credits, but like watching the whole credits is its own reward. There is technically a post credits thing, but it is so nothing that if that's why you're watching the whole credits, don't bother. um There might be a Spider-Man out there in space for some reason. or out out of this world. oh but but but It's a little that's the Spidey tracker that you have seen in the movie several times. and Yeah, it's like pixel art indicating. But it's not on Earth. um So ah there there you go. You don't have to watch the credits for that reason. You could watch the credits if you wanted to like read all the names of the people who worked so hard to make the thing. But, you know. and space sound oh yeah yeah That's all you really get.
01:49:53
Speaker
Any more, Ben? Oh, I must have. If one comes to me. They come up later.
01:50:01
Speaker
um i i have a bullet about intensity of movement. ah Maybe other Spider-Man movies have done this well, but I can't remember ever feeling as much like, I don't know, the the the intensity of gravity as he's swinging so fast in the first first person views and kind of like zoning out. and I thought that those...
01:50:20
Speaker
those scenes were done extremely well. Like not only is his swinging around cool, but when it goes into the first person view, and it it, it, I don't know. I felt like he was, uh, trying to quiet the noise, you know, he was trying to distract himself.
01:50:34
Speaker
Um, By keeping himself busy and moving fast.

X-Men's Introduction and Future Developments

01:50:40
Speaker
right overload god he's not He's not swinging so aggressively when he's when he's carrying MJ. Of course.
01:50:47
Speaker
um And then of course just how great the the movement is when he doesn't have control of it. He manages to get anywhere. um the choreography on scorpion's tail in combat awesome how effectively they use it as a third limb and i loved the choreography of the ninjas when they're all controlled by by a gene like what happens if we have nine amazing fighters who all share a mind and the way that they can like coordinate their attacks in a way that you couldn't if you didn't have a hive mind situation oh well i got the impression that they were just doing their
01:51:23
Speaker
but I thought this was like this was Tuesday to those those. Oh, really? And I mean, I know they're very good. they They knew all those. They knew all their choreo already. And Gene just like told him, like, do your choreo hand. Oh, I got the impression that it was Gene doing it. And it was because it was one mind controlling them that they could coordinate that well. Maybe it was. I don't know.
01:51:47
Speaker
ah And then the last thing I was like, I was surprised how young she was. Like, this is how we're introducing X-Men into the MCU. Right. And she's one of the first X-Men, but she's a child.
01:51:59
Speaker
And that's that's interesting. ah Interested to see where they take that. It's such a setup, right? Oh, they're all these troubled X-Men causing chaos, getting snapped up by the government, but can't be allowed to roam free because they're of control. just the Just an upstate New York.
01:52:19
Speaker
Just the perfect time for Professor X to roll along and open a school. i was I was kind of surprised they had enough restraint not to show her being sent off to Xavier's.
01:52:31
Speaker
This is, but like, what I was saying earlier, this is the best way to introduce X-Men. X-Men belong to the young, right? To people like, just, it's that time you're learning, and it's like school, right? What young adult thing isn't about like a school of some sort, you know?

Spider-Man and MJ: Future Dynamics?

01:52:51
Speaker
i i think this is great. this is you don't The problem with X-Men comics is if you're just reading Jean Grey now, you don't care about Jean Grey. You needed to like grow up with her. You needed to go through things with her. you know
01:53:08
Speaker
um I don't know. i i ah I love they that they connected. i connected to this way harder than seeing like some old Jean Grey stepping through a time portal. Yeah, that would not...
01:53:24
Speaker
yeah
01:53:27
Speaker
I mean, I'm sure we'll see some version of that in Avengers Doomsday. they got They got Ian and Patrick to, you know, so they'll be around.
01:53:39
Speaker
I'm always happy to see Ian and Patrick, but I'm, I'm, I'm a little like, what are we doing? Avengers doomsday. I don't know. We'll find out what they're doing. pretty wild. would like to be a good movie. We'll see what happens.
01:53:53
Speaker
Yeah. Yeah.
01:53:55
Speaker
It might just be one scene, you know, where they're just like, oh I brought in everyone through all of time and space. There's portals. that list of characters gets longer and longer and longer, I don't know how they do it. I don't know how you cover enough of those characters in an interesting way, but that's not my problem to solve.
01:54:18
Speaker
Any other brand new day thoughts?
01:54:24
Speaker
We've seen Patrick Stewart die as Charles Xavier several times now. like a lot of times. They even squeezed, they squozed one into the second Doctor Strange movie.
01:54:37
Speaker
Yeah. Might see it again. We might. Oh, I wonder how much they're paying those guys. I did love, if we're closing it out, maybe a good thing to end on this. I love that, like, you're right, they respected Mary Jane as a character. They respected, like, the plot that they had made happen.
01:55:01
Speaker
But I love that he got to have Ned back. And it does make so much sense because I feel like I saw this like in Reddit or something. Someone pointed out that back in that old, I only saw that movie once. So I didn't remember. Apparently like Ned does his own spell or whatever before the spell. So when he does the handshake, it like, right. Maybe does a spell that actually is magic. He's wearing the sling ring when it happens.
01:55:29
Speaker
Yeah, so, and it's like, oh, he gets to have his bro back, like that, like, you know, oh, they did the Lord of the Rings reference! Oh my

Speculations and Character Interactions

01:55:42
Speaker
it was very true to have that was our this was adult spider-man right that was our generation ah lord of the uh putting lord of the rings at each other could you could you like just like fan service me any harder or no yeah also i'm like is ian mckellen their gandalf in their worlds and also soon to be their magneto and yeah
01:56:12
Speaker
ah I really...

The relationship with with MJ is going to be fixed in some way, right? And I don't know how I want it to be. I'm fine if it's never romantic and it's just like yeah they're friends. But, you know, she's tight with with Ned. So I feel like that's still going to happen.

And they're you know they're great together. and And their interactions in this movie are great. Are they great together, though? I feel like the story Peter and MJ is that they're just always like, you know, like never quite getting there.

And it was important to her that Ned and Peter should get back together. Like... Because, you know, she cares about Ned so much. And yeah, I just, I thought it was a little handled.

We liked that movie. Yeah, it was so good. We are talking about seeing it again, which is not something that I normally do with any sort of movie, let alone one in theaters.
