In ep 11, we see just who is out of touch with the BGG community more, as we see who predicted more winners in the BGG Awards. Then, not to be down for long, we predict the Spiel nominees!

Shane had great and not-so-great experiences at Briscon, and we have both played a slew of games since the last episode, so tune in!

Hello and welcome to episode 11 of Mate Let's Play. It's been a minute, but we're back. Life just sometimes gets in the way when you're doing this, when you can fit it in around everything else that's going

Life Events & Board Games Preview

on in the world. So welcome Shane.
00:00:38
Speaker
Good morning and welcome everyone. It's good to be back for episode one one and yes, life does get in the way sometimes, time so you know. We have to pay some bills occasionally.
00:00:49
Speaker
Yeah, it's funny because we knew we were going to be missing a few episodes a while back so we we pre-recorded stuff and we had no indication that we weren't going to be able to record this time around. It just so happened that Every week, like either I was in Cairns picking up a car or you were over in WA or something and just, yeah, here we are. Three weeks on, doesn't matter. we We're back.
00:01:12
Speaker
We're back and we've got lots to talk about. So there's plenty of games that have been played. Well, of course, one of those weekends was Briscon, right? So I'm sure... Briscon, I can touch on Briscon. And and that also too, ah you know, there was a ah time in Adelaide as well that I could talk about today as well. So was really good.
00:01:31
Speaker
Well, let's get straight into it then. Let's talk about some board

Game Store Visits & Gift Purchases

00:01:34
Speaker
games. I've got a few, but um I reckon you've probably got more. So you kick us off there. I'll kick it off. I'll kick it off. All right. Well, on work trip, I am went to Perth and then into Adelaide before I had headed back to Brisbane. And, you know, I always go and visit my favourite Perth game store, but I must admit it's kind of lost its way.
00:01:54
Speaker
I won't name it, but um every time i've been in there, I've been really disappointed. Walked out with nothing. and um so anyway so I won't be visiting that game store but there's a couple of really good game stores in Adelaide that that I recommend um the games world in Adelaide very friendly it's just off the Rundle Mall there and um the you know when I was in there actually um they always ask if they want you know you know do you need some help no no I'm all good I'm good and I walk around and have look at some games and
00:02:25
Speaker
I had a a goal to buy a Flip 7 because that night i was taking I was meeting my sister, my brother-in-law and my two nieces um out for a board game night.

Lost Dice Cafe Experiences

00:02:34
Speaker
And so I had Flip 7 with me and I also had Six Nymphed. And I thought to myself, well, I know my nieces are going to like Flip 7, so I'm going to buy them a copy.
00:02:45
Speaker
And the Games World people, so I went in there, saw there was a whole stack of copies there. And this was when it was just, it won the Board Game Geek. award, which I'm sure we'll talk about a bit later.
00:02:58
Speaker
But tom so they had a stack there and I just let them know that this one recently won the BGG award, so you should probably put a little tag on it. and But anyway, this this lady asked me if I know anything about board games. that was I said, yeah, no, a little bit.
00:03:13
Speaker
And um she said, this is what we want. We want a good party game. Straight Flip 7. And said, So I ended up selling a copy of Flip 7 whilst i was in the store to someone else and then bought Flip 7 for my nieces. And um anyway, we went to the Lost Dice.
00:03:32
Speaker
um i don't know if you've ever heard of it, but in Adelaide, um in King William Street, ah just this little side door and they've got this big, um i think it's a dice out the front.
00:03:43
Speaker
um And it's called the Lost Dice and it's a board game cafe. It is fantastic. It was the first time been there. I've been wanting to go there every time I go into Adelaide, but, you know, I don't want to go in my own. So I booked a table to meet my family, and we all got there.
00:04:01
Speaker
it's It's three levels, three levels of ah ah board gaming happening, and it was packed. Every single table was packed with people playing board games. so um Lucky I did book a table, though, because there would have been no tables there when I got there.
00:04:15
Speaker
Yeah. The ah lady, I think her name was Abby, was one of the workers there, ah to took me to the table and explained how it all worked. So you've got to you've actually got to, when you book the table, there's a little QR code. You scan that and then you've got to pay per head of everyone that's going to be there.
00:04:34
Speaker
And it's a certain certain cost. I think it's like ah five bucks for children or $7 for adults or something like that. And the $7 gets you access to the board game library that they've got as well.
00:04:46
Speaker
right so But if you're going to bring your own games, it's only $5 per person to book that table. So I did that. But then also, too, they served. yeah You could get soft drinks.
00:04:57
Speaker
You get an alcoholic beverage if you want an alcoholic beverage. And they do food as well, like a full-on restaurant meal. um Yeah, cool. Typical bar food, right? So know burgers and chips. and um So anyway, they got there.
00:05:11
Speaker
And we ended up playing Six Nymph, which they liked. Flip 7, they loved that. Then my niece has taught me a game, Love Letter.
00:05:23
Speaker
Never played it before. Oh, you haven't played Love Letter? Never played Love Letter before. And I really enjoyed it. No wonder this this that game, that little card game, took the world by storm when it was first released because it was good fun and my niece has taught it really well.
00:05:36
Speaker
um And i I know that there's so many different variants of Love Letter out there and my my brother-in-law is a massive Batman fan like I am. And I said, I'm pretty sure there's Batman love letter. And he said, are you kidding me?
00:05:49
Speaker
and And I said, no, I'm pretty sure there is. So I'm um'm on the mission to track that down. But I really enjoyed that. And they taught me another game. I can't remember what it's called now. It started with an It was a little card game.
00:06:03
Speaker
Ammonia or something like that. um um am Ammonia. Ammonia. I think, yeah, I think I know the one you're talking about. want to say Agamonia, but that's not right. No, as you yeah I think it's Amamonia.
00:06:15
Speaker
Ammonia. It's where you've got Anomia. Anomia, where you've got lay a lower layer card down. You both lay a card down at the same time, and then you've got to guess a word that relates to that card or something like that.
00:06:27
Speaker
That was like okay. I didn't mind that. It went on for a long time, and we ended up culling that game, you know, ending it. But I gave them the copy of Flip 7. Yeah. um But shout out to the Lost Dice. The food was really good.
00:06:39
Speaker
um And the prices were good for soft drinks. And if you wanted a beer, could get a beer. um The service was great as well. like Really nice people there. ah Their board game library, they they would have at least 100 to 200 board games that you can go and choose from their library and play.
00:06:55
Speaker
And you know to be we only we're only going to be there from 7 till 9. But we ended up staying until closing time because we were having so much fun. And um so I totally recommend it.
00:07:09
Speaker
the The Lost Dice in Adelaide, it was brilliant, brilliant fun.

Exploring Maglev Metro

00:07:13
Speaker
So what else have you been playing, mate, before i talk about RizCon? Well, I think the last episode I talked about how I've i've kind of gone on this bit of a train binge and that has continued. So Aegis D, I'm still getting a few plays.
00:07:27
Speaker
But I finally, after owning it for a long time, playing it once, moving it on, buying it again and not touching it for ages, I finally got Maglev Metro back to the table.
00:07:39
Speaker
And that, I think, is my favorite train game. I don't know why i sold it. I don't know why I haven't played it, but it is such a cool game. It's quite quick, um snappy turns.
00:07:51
Speaker
ah So I'm not sure if you've ever played Maglev Metro? Never played it, no. So it's basically you're working on the underground systems of these cities and it's in the future. So you're converting them all into magnetic levitation trains.
00:08:03
Speaker
So how it works though, is because it's in the subway, it's under the ground, all of your hexes are clear with your color as the track. So blue, yellow, red or whatever.
00:08:16
Speaker
So you can actually stack them on top of each other and see all the different train lines that are under the ground on that, in that particular space, which just is super cool. Cause you just make this awesome map of all these different colors and lines going everywhere.
00:08:29
Speaker
ah But you start off with robots and the robots help you get some stuff done, almost like a deck builder in a way, but not a deck building it an amount of workers. So you you'll you'll build some track and then you can upgrade your so your um your operations on your board to allow you to build more track or allow you to deliver more people or pick up more people, et cetera.
00:08:50
Speaker
and if And every now and again, you get to build a new um station. And depending on what station you build, you'll have access to actual passengers which are harder to get. So they give you better benefits on your board.
00:09:03
Speaker
ah So you're really, you the robots help you run everything, but the people is where you earn income and victory points and and whatnot. So ah you you want to be building offices and laboratories and whatever else. So it's just really cool. And and it's a bag drawing game so whenever you um build one of these buildings for the first time that have these people you add all of those people into the supply which is out of a bag so whenever you draw so sometimes you'll have to you'll be able to draw workers out of a bag you may get robots you may get some of these people it just depends on what you draw out but the start just all full of robots so you're building this
00:09:47
Speaker
I guess this economy of um people to be able to use throughout your system. It's really cool. it's I don't know whether I made it sound good or bad there, but it's quite simple for a train game. And it's quite, I think really approachable just because the theme is a little bit different to like, you know, the eighteen hundreds where that's where most train games are set.
00:10:08
Speaker
um And it, like said, plays pretty quick. I played it solo, which was hilarious because it's, The solo mode, um we talk about, you know, I was able to grok it. No, no, no, no, no. no Grok is not the word I would use.
00:10:24
Speaker
The opposite of grok would be what I'd use. So how it works is every turn you have to pull a worker out of the bag and that just tracks your... ah that just tracks your Amount of terms that you've taken in the game. And for every worker you pull out of the bag, you lose that many victory points at the end of the game.
00:10:46
Speaker
And the game ends when you can't pull any more workers out of the back. Okay. So I start my first game of this. i'm like, yeah, cool. i'm going to build track here. going to build this line here. going to do this, do that. And then I'm like, I'm already out of workers because I didn't add any more workers to the bag. I just had the robots in there. Okay. It was only like nine turns and I was out.
00:11:04
Speaker
And I'm like, I'm doing up my point scoring. like, I scored three points. And I go to the book. It's like one of those, you know, if you score this many, you are this person. And zero to 10 was like, i think it was like annoying mobile phone talker or something like that was was the name of what I was. Okay. um Like, you know, on on the train being loud on the phone. Oh, yeah yeah. Yeah. Okay. I got you.
00:11:26
Speaker
um So that was that was my first go. And then I'm like, ah, I understand now. I've got to put more workers into the bag to elongate the game, give myself more turns to be able to do more things.
00:11:39
Speaker
And I absolutely did that in my second game. I kept adding the workers. It was really good. I was building this whole network. And then I finally ran out of workers. I'm like, I don't think I could have done much more. And I counted all my points up and then I subtracted the amount of turns I had, which this time was 32. So in more than three times the amount of turns, but I still only scored three points because all of the other stuff I did equated to 35 points minus 32.
00:12:07
Speaker
So yeah, um I'm interested to go back for a third attempt, but I don't know if my, but my, ah my ego could take another smashing. That's challenging, though. That would really challenging to try and grok.
00:12:18
Speaker
And apparently, like but according to the rulebook, you can get like 170 points plus. And I'm just like, whoo-hoo. Good luck. I'll be happy with 10. If I just get to 10, I'll be stoked.
00:12:29
Speaker
it's the friday It's the Friday of the chark train world. Yeah, pretty much. Yeah. So, but it load loads of fun, loads of fun multiplayer too, but the solo was, was definitely a cool challenge.

BrizCon Recap & Game Highlights

00:12:41
Speaker
um Yeah. So Maglev Metro is definitely a winner. I also broke my, I'm no longer backing Kickstarter rule because I saw that they had some new maps for it. So I may, I may not have decided to back that. And by may not, I mean, no, I definitely did.
00:12:56
Speaker
ah So, yeah, that's Maglev Metro. Definitely a โ€“ I actually think it's um i think it's a for everyone game. I think people who aren't into train games would get a kick out of the the board where your're like your' you're making your turns better. your You're building your engine by collecting these workers and then adding them to your board to automate certain things and whatnot. So that's interesting as opposed to just the track building and delivery stuff on the other side. Yeah.
00:13:26
Speaker
Yeah, cool. I know um Heavy Cardboard often have a lot of playthroughs of Maglev Metro, so might I might watch one of them. um Yeah, it's cool. I just actually picked up before the podcast a train game.
00:13:42
Speaker
um It's actually my 31st board game from Martin Wallace, so I think I've got an issue. So Steam Power arrived, my full-in, all-in,
00:13:55
Speaker
a package of Steam Power. So it's still sitting in the back of the car. i haven't brought it in yet to even have a look at it. But I'll be playing that today. Well, my copy is currently on the water between Cairns and Bemiga. So it will be here on Monday.
00:14:09
Speaker
i went all in minus the Cat Power one.
00:14:14
Speaker
Yeah, no, I've got the Cat Power as well. um So because we actually played the Cat Power expansion with Martins. at my house one day and it's actually quite good.
00:14:26
Speaker
all yeah All you're doing is just the cats are kind of blocking your way. And it was good. I enjoyed it. ah Yes, so I'm looking forward to playing that today.
00:14:37
Speaker
BrizCon. BrizCon was on yeah for another year and ah well done to Joe and Stu and Kylie and all the volunteers. It was a good good couple of days. um And um there was lots of giveaways from VR. So,
00:14:52
Speaker
thanks to VR distribution. um We had about 17 giveaways. So it was just fantastic that they supported us that way. and um But the whole the whole two days was good fun.
00:15:04
Speaker
ah The venue had lots of people playing lots of games, lots of fun and laughter. So for another year, well done to Joe, Stu and Kylie. It was good. um I played, think I played about four or five games. We played some big big games that you know take a couple of hours.
00:15:21
Speaker
and So myself, Phil, Nick ah ni and and ah Ingrid and Shane, we all played Coloma. ah It was you know a game I hadn't played for a couple of years, so I had to you know relearn it all like yeah know because I was doing the teach.
00:15:40
Speaker
And God, that's fun. Such a fun game. and So sorry to all the people that are missing out on it. but so Yeah, yeah. It was just cool fun, you know, especially at five players because you're just blocking each other. or it Pretty much every turn someone's getting blocked.
00:15:54
Speaker
And I think for the first five or six turns, poor Ingrid was just getting blocked every time to doing doing a second action. Yeah, okay. so um So that was good fun and... then we How does that work, the blocking? Is that if so if two people choose the same action? Yeah, correct. So if two people choose change that action, you you um you only get one of the actions. So you either get the boom or the โ€“ because you're bust, right? So you don't get that second action.
00:16:21
Speaker
And so it's quite quite quite rare that you โ€“ I actually but think it was one of the last turns. We all chose one, two, three, four, five. So everyone got the second action. Like, it was very rare for that to happen. So it was cool.
00:16:37
Speaker
um Then we played Nova Roma as our next game. So, you know, that that's so cool. i don't know. Have you ever played Nova Roma? Yeah, I have. Actually, I've got it down on my table today to to play today.
00:16:50
Speaker
Oh, there you go. I picked up a copy not long ago, but I've only played, think only played, i think I've it once with you maybe, or and I know I've played it with my brother. but yeah, I mean, that I remember screwing, actually might've only played with my brother because I remember screwing myself over by trying to block him out of being able to take an action, which also meant I blocked myself out of doing that same action, which would have, did which cost me the game.
00:17:12
Speaker
Yeah. um But yeah, it was really cool. That that whole, like, I call it the target mechanism, but it's not really similar, but different. Correct. Yeah. yeah I really like it. It is good. And there's so many things you can do. And, um but I love it when, you know, when we're also blocking each other on from that as well, you just,
00:17:27
Speaker
see the paint on people's faces when you go and block. And I think there was there was ah and that was That was the previous week where where Shane blocked me and I blocked him and it was fun.
00:17:39
Speaker
Just good fun when you block each other. um Then the next day we played... can't really remember what we played the next day. Nantinarking hit the table again. um That was a really quick game, actually.
00:17:52
Speaker
really quick game. ah okay Stupid me. I... am I played all these cards. i had I had the... Thin the deck. might Get rid of the deck. That my end game condition.
00:18:04
Speaker
But I was playing all these cards that put all the... What ah do they call The markers that come out when you have two of the same. Anyway. It's an end game condition when you have seven markers out on board. Is it corruption?
00:18:20
Speaker
Slight corruption. yeah Yeah, we'll call it that. And... and um Anyway, stupid me, I'm playing all these cards and putting all this corruption out.
00:18:32
Speaker
There was corruption everywhere. I looked at the board and I went, someone's going to have that as the end game condition. Phil's sitting next to me and he goes, I've won.
00:18:44
Speaker
Slams his card down and everyone went, well, that's a quick game. Yeah. not like you're going help somebody else beat you, Shane, in a game? No, I know. I was looking at the ball going, oh, shit, what have done here? As soon I did that last one, Phil's in there going, oh, thanks, I won the game.
00:19:03
Speaker
I'm just trying to think what else we played. remember the other game we played. Oh, The Godfather. How can I forget that? Oh, nice. Godfather. God, that's good. um There was people in the Hudson. It was it was just such a fun game.
00:19:15
Speaker
Yeah. a real mean game too. So playing that and then Nantinarkin says two main games that we played pretty much Coloma is pretty mean as well. It can be. And, uh, and Nova Roma as well. So better like interaction.
00:19:36
Speaker
You're just going to have the right, right group of people. And we do, we've always got the right group of people to play something like that. Um, but yeah, so that was a briscon and, um, It was a really good weekend. Um, I did end up picking up, uh, from their bring and buy section, um, hegemony.
00:19:52
Speaker
Oh yeah. Um, absolute bargain price. And it was the full in all in Kickstarter. Um, say I'm really looking forward. I've watched a four hour play through on heavy cardboard on how to play it.
00:20:06
Speaker
It doesn't like when, when you, when you, when I first heard about the game, I thought, ah this is going to be really heavy. This is going to be too hard to learn. Um, I talking to Shane, who's played it, and he said, it's actually not that not that hard once you get into it.
00:20:20
Speaker
And then watching the playthrough, no it's not. It's not that hard at all. um So I'm just going to look forward to playing that very soon, um with hopefully with Shane and Ingrid and get get it to the table.
00:20:33
Speaker
um But I will talk about something maybe at the end of the show that was a bit of a downer for me for Briscon. And you know it's going to get a special mention near the end of the pod, that's okay.

Game Challenges & Regular Sessions

00:20:48
Speaker
But tom one thing I have been doing is playing a lot of Flip 7 too, mate. We now have a trophy at work.
00:20:57
Speaker
I 3D printed a trophy because... um Every day we have a bit of a half an hour break um to play Flip 7. It's hilarious. one of the One of my team put ah put a meeting in our diaries now.
00:21:09
Speaker
where And it's just literally called Flip 7. And so we're playing a few games and then you know whoever wins the three, whoever wins the last game of the three takes the trophy and sits on their desk until the next time we p play it.
00:21:23
Speaker
um But I played it in Perth. I taught my team over in Perth how to play it. We just took a break, a bit of fun. um by the time we'd finished, I got, I spoke to them both. One of them bought it on Amazon straight away and another another one bought it for their family to play as well.
00:21:40
Speaker
um Four or five people at my Queensland office have bought it. So i'm I'm selling Flip 7 like there's no tomorrow. its They're all loving it. And these, these are non-gamers. All of these people are non-gamers, right? And that's,
00:21:52
Speaker
That's why I think you know it's it's such a good game. I know it's up for the Spiel des Jahres and it's going to win it. so But I've mean been playing a stack of Flip 7.
00:22:01
Speaker
Well, I have been playing a game that I've talked, I think I've talked about before, um which is Wonderland's War. And we have kind of created our own group of Wonderland War. Like we get together and play it once, well, not once a week because of it away, but yeah, like whenever we can. So tomorrow we're having another go of Wonderland's War.
00:22:23
Speaker
Helen really likes it. Manuel and Liliana both really like it. And they come over. Raphael plays with their son, who's like 18 months old and treats him like a little brother. It's awesome.
00:22:36
Speaker
And we just sit out and play board games. and and And the game takes about, it's a long game, probably three hours. maybe sometimes more, sometimes less, depending on how it's going. And that was a bit of a turnoff the first time I played. It was like, oh it's a bit long.
00:22:49
Speaker
But no, it's a really good length for the game that it is. it's yeah You wouldn't want to shorten it anymore because you'd lose that ability to sort of fight back in the last round. and um It's just such a great...
00:23:02
Speaker
bag builder it's a great combat system because you're drawing from so you've got that element of luck but you can mitigate that by filling your bag with stuff or getting rid of shards etc there's so much to it and we still haven't moved on from the a cards so for every different chip a little bit like quacks there's an a side a b side a c side and the d side we still haven't used that i think we're going to give the b side again to that um But we've only used a to this point, we played it probably five or six times.
00:23:34
Speaker
And um we've also got the Shards of Madness expansion, which I still also haven't even gotten out yet because I've kind of figured that there's no real point until we played the B, C and D sides.
00:23:44
Speaker
to to add more content so it's it's off it's giving us a lot and and everything changes based on which character you use which wonderlandians come out uh and obviously this next game will change a lot because all of our allies will have different powers so um if you're not aware of how it works essentially there's two phases and the first phase is the uh what's it called the the t phase the yeah um Yeah, I think it's just called the T phase, where you basically go around and choose all these cards.
00:24:17
Speaker
The cards give you different abilities or benefits, they also let you put your your followers out on the board. And then once all that's finished, we go to the war phase where you can fight in every one of the five spaces that you have put any followers out in.
00:24:30
Speaker
And when you fight, you draw chips from your bag, which all have a dollar a point value, and whoever has the most points wins the battle. um But there are also times where you might not win or win. You might want to come second and get half the points, but also be able to forge a token or maybe you hit a particular ah quest that you have in order to score more victory points. So there's there's a lot of strategy that goes into the combat and more that other than just, hey, let's pull chips out of the bag and see who wins.
00:24:57
Speaker
But it was it's such a cool game. And I was lucky enough to get Joe and Shannon's copy ah before I left Emerald. And it's like fully, it's the fully blinged out version.
00:25:07
Speaker
But then they've also painted all the miniatures and they're so well done. Yeah, nice. So it just looks awesome. Yeah, so um it's every time I play it, I send a photo to Joe. I'm just like, it's getting played. Thank you.
00:25:20
Speaker
So I actually did a trade and and you might you might find this bizarre. In order to get it, I think I did it for this. Oh, no, I just bought this one off him, but I also got Dune War for Arrakis off him, um and I traded Dwellings of Eldervale for Dune War for Arrakis. love Dwellings, but I love Andromeda's Edge. Yeah, you got Andromeda's Edge. Yeah, it's no point.
00:25:43
Speaker
Yeah. yeah But yeah, so that was i Wonderland's War. Again, we're playing it tomorrow and it was one of those things because I was away last weekend and I think I was crook the weekend before that. I hadn't had them over for a couple of weeks. so i So I messaged Manuel yesterday and said, hey, you fancy yeah Wonderland's War session on Sunday? and he's like...
00:26:03
Speaker
Lily and Arna and I were literally just talking about this. I was about to message you, see what you're doing this weekend. So they're super keen. Yeah, cannot wait. So, yeah, Wonderland's War, it's brilliant. It is a good game, a really good game. And what I like is you can really, in that when you're doing the T round, you can go as fast or slow around the table as you like, but you might miss out on some really good cards if you do go a little bit slower. I like that mechanism.
00:26:32
Speaker
Yeah. You can skip ahead as far as you want to grab it, but you just you're actually then going to slow that round down. but oh Sorry, you're going to speed that round up for yourself.
00:26:42
Speaker
Yeah, and take more um madness, which means you might end up with more bad chips in your bag. yeahp i actually had Alice last time I played. It's the first time i've used Alice, and she goes the other way around the table.
00:26:54
Speaker
oh which is really cool. um But, yeah, no, I like it as well, mate. I've played it. And, you you know, you mentioned it can go for three hours. um i think the more you play it, you wouldn't even recognize that time going because you'd be you'd be knowing how much fun you're having.
00:27:11
Speaker
um I remember the first time I played it, it did take a while and it did drag out. But then the next time I played it, I knew what I was doing. So even though it still took that same amount of time, it just flew.
00:27:22
Speaker
And I didn't feel the time go, if that makes sense. so Yeah. And you're right. It's because, like, it it feels quicker because you know what all the chips do. You don't have to read all the cards. You don't have to at the go to the rule book all the time.
00:27:36
Speaker
But you are thinking out your turn so much more because you know what you're doing that, yeah, it feels quicker but it goes longer. but yes, it's still โ€“ You sort of sit up after you after your game. Like, we're we're starting tomorrow at 1pm.
00:27:49
Speaker
It'll probably finish at 5. But we'll we'll all get up at 5 and you look at the clock and go, holy crap, it's 5pm. Because that's what we do every time. so yeah Very cool. that I like it as well, mate. It's a good game.
00:28:03
Speaker
Battlequacks, they call it, don't they? Battlequacks,

Disappointment with Deep Regrets

00:28:06
Speaker
yeah, yeah. I do have one other game to mention because I did mention that I was going to play it, which was the Kickstarter for Deep Regrets.
00:28:14
Speaker
Oh, yes. Yeah. So I the table. Do you have Deep Regrets? ah Well, yes. in In a word, yes. ah It's, yeah, it was...
00:28:28
Speaker
It was about an hour longer than it needed to be. And it wasn't because of the same reason of Wonderland's War. It was because it was just too convoluted for what essentially is a joke game. Yeah. You know, the humor was good.
00:28:41
Speaker
the card The illustrations of the card were cards were awesome. ah But they had this really weird thing where you had to choose whether you were going to stay fishing or go back to the town um for the next, for each round.
00:28:55
Speaker
But when you go fishing, you roll all your dice and you only keep your dice that you start with. The other dice you have to purchase from the town. So if you go fishing and you use the dice, then you no longer have those dice for next round.
00:29:08
Speaker
So you're going to town. So it's kind like, why don't we just have ah fishing phase, town phase, fishing phase, town phase? Like, so, and we played it a few times and I tried to stay out fishing and it just wasn't, didn't like Helen went to town and got all this cool stuff, like a nice rod and a new reel and,
00:29:23
Speaker
And I'm just there going, righto, well, I've got three dice for the next round, so let's see what I can do. ah But what really killed it for me was it sounds cool. Like whenever you catch, they have Foul and Fairfish.
00:29:40
Speaker
And whenever you catch a Foulfish, you've got to draw a card, which is like an insanity card. um And depending on how many cards you take, you are going down this, this tally of insanity, which I do like. And the further down that track you go, the more valuable the foul fish become. So it's like, because you're, you've got insane, you don't care. You just want this fish has got 41 eyes. Great.
00:30:04
Speaker
I love eyes, you know, or Hey, I just caught someone's leg. That's awesome. I could eat that, you know, and that sounds cool. And it is, and it's, and you kind of get a bit of a chuckle out of that, but, To us, it kind of came became quickly apparent that it was still better to be down the bottom of that madness track so you could fish for the stuff in the depths that was worth more victory points.
00:30:25
Speaker
that it just became a game of who's lucky enough to flip over the right fish, the better fish, who's going to score the most. And lost all kind of strategy because it was clear that that was the right way to go. Pure luck based game.
00:30:38
Speaker
Yeah. and And for the length of time it took, and we we played it, Helen and I played it a couple of times. And the first time I played it, I was just like, oh, maybe, maybe it will work better with more players because there'll be more action happening in the water and you you won't,
00:30:52
Speaker
maybe Maybe you won't all want to be in the bottom because yeah yeah there's other areas that are being left alone. and then we played it with Raph and it it took like an hour longer, just adding a third player.
00:31:03
Speaker
It was just crazy long. And so I ah thought about keeping it, thinking, um yeah, maybe the humor will get it across the line. But I actually, I literally just sold it yesterday. So it's gone.
00:31:16
Speaker
See later. It just wasn't for us. Yeah. ah I've heard that a lot of people like it was like number in the hotness for a while. a lot of people are talking about it. So hopefully the person who bought it off me likes it more than I did, but it just, yeah. And I said to Helen, cause she didn't know a selling games.
00:31:31
Speaker
And I said, Oh, i sold this game and game. And she's like, Oh, you sold Deep Regrets. And like, yeah. She's like, yeah, good. i don't want to play that again. but i yeah So, yeah, not for me. And, i yeah, definitely not for everyone.
00:31:45
Speaker
No, it's not for me either. Bit of a disappointment because I was really looking forward

Great Western Trail & Predictions

00:31:50
Speaker
to it. It looked really cool. Unfortunately, that's where it ended. Well, I've got one more game I can talk about and um off the back of El Paso, actually. and And funny story too. I did sell a copy of El Paso to someone in a game store too.
00:32:09
Speaker
um They were looking at buying. We were having a bit of a chat. And um he was he was a solo gamer as well, liked playing solo games. So um he did mention Great Western Trail. And I said, well, if you never if you've never played it before, this is this is the one I recommend.
00:32:27
Speaker
had a copy of El Paso. And, you know, they ended buying that. so So I've come back and I've been playing a lot of El Paso. especially on BGA too.
00:32:40
Speaker
And I'm in currently in a game with with Shane and BGA yeah with it. um I have played Great Western Trail.
00:32:49
Speaker
And I heard you didn't hate it. I don't hate it. It was good. It was good. I knew what I was doing. Thanks to El Paso, I knew what I was doing.
00:33:00
Speaker
And, um you know, it was instant. Nick did a quick teach. ah Just a really quick teach. And I said, look, i think I think I've got it now because he said, look, it's pretty much El Paso, but there's a couple of little things you need to to know about. so So he told me those.
00:33:15
Speaker
Off we went. I came dead last, but I still was competitive and I knew what I was doing. So I can see there's there's lots of strategy in it as well.
00:33:27
Speaker
um You know, you can't. go, you know, all in on, or you can go all on cattle and you you do pretty well. But I got down to pretty much, I was thinning my deck big time.
00:33:38
Speaker
And, um I pretty much got down to just around about so six cards in my hand, which were all, you know, really good cards and all individuals. I didn't have any double ups.
00:33:50
Speaker
Um, but I got to the last round to do that. And, um, yeah Nick had said to me, look, you know the game's kind of designed so you can't really do that. that's why you got to the last round. yeah um and But no, I like it.
00:34:05
Speaker
I'm looking forward to... We're playing Great Western Trail New Zealand next. um So that's going to be hitting the table hopefully next Thursday, game day. But thank you, El Paso.
00:34:17
Speaker
um Got me back into a game, which i actually do like. So... There go. I'm interested to hear what you think about New Zealand because I think it's i think it's a great game, and especially in comparison to original Great Wisman Trail. So um it apparently it adds something similar to the, i think it's called the Railways of the North expansion that you can get with Great Wisman Trail.
00:34:42
Speaker
Yeah, okay. But it's what it takes away for me which makes it a better game. So it'll be interesting to see what you think after playing one so quickly but until the other one, with what your thoughts are on that.
00:34:53
Speaker
Yeah, well, I am ah did actually ask if we could do New Zealand and both Nick and Andy said, no, no, well, let's do the original first and then we'll go to New Zealand after that.
00:35:04
Speaker
So it's a bit of a step up. So, no, I enjoyed it. It's back on my โ€“ it's off my shit list, so โ€“ yeah i and I definitely know, though, that you know the the most hated game i i is that shit real confluence will never, ever change my mind on that one.
00:35:24
Speaker
so you've You've so ingrained that into my brain that whenever anyone is talking about scenario confluence, I'm like, that's not what it's called. it'ss called It's called shit real confusion.
00:35:38
Speaker
But no, it has been it's been great playing some games. So I've really enjoyed it. Yeah, it's actually been the the lowest month of games for me this month, but it's still been like 80 games.
00:35:51
Speaker
So it's still been insane. yeah um But yeah, similar to you, a lot of party games, a lot of just quick and easy pull out and play games. Yeah, so there's more, there's heaps more we can talk about, but instead, let's move over to seeing how well we predicted the board game geek ones.
00:36:09
Speaker
Yeah.
00:36:22
Speaker
I'm going to say pretty crap. Paulie, yeah.
00:36:28
Speaker
Well, to remind everyone, we chose ah both game we thought would win a game we wanted to win for each category. But we had the rule that we couldn't choose the same games.
00:36:39
Speaker
So ah no one is going we're not going to tie in any categories here. So ah Lord of the Rings Jewel for the two-player game was the winner. And Shane, you went first. So you got that.
00:36:52
Speaker
That's pretty much how that one went. yeah um Artwork. What one artwork? Oh, Unconscious Mind, which I have. There we go. The game you and i play together. Yes. So I'm going to give me that point.
00:37:05
Speaker
All right. Then we had cooperative game and the winner was the fellowship of the ring trick taking game, which was the game I wanted to win. Well done. You went, you went with the gang and bomb busters. I surprised that. Can't believe the gang didn't win that one.
00:37:20
Speaker
Yeah. The gang, don't think the gang won't get anything, which blows my mind, but yeah, you know, I'm not, I'm not board game geek. So maybe I needed to create some fake accounts.
00:37:31
Speaker
um the best expansion went to ax the blinded reach which was one of yours so a two all uh innovative game went to arcs which is yours so you've taken the lead uh light game of the year went to castle combo which none of us selected uh we went you went bomb blast bomb busters and lem i went the gang and flip seven uh flip seven came in second captain flip came in third so we only had flip seven anywhere near that one um medium game of the year we also just totally missed on we had in fact we really missed on this one because third was endeavor deep sea which neither us put down second was lord of the rings duel for middle earth which you put down and first was harmonies which neither us put down okay
00:38:20
Speaker
ah Heavy game of the year was SETI, which neither of us put down. How did neither us put that down? Second was ARX. Third was Civilution.
00:38:32
Speaker
I've had ARX and none of us had Civilution. We had Ezra and Nehemiah, Unconscious Mind, Andromeda's Edge and ARX. So we scored no points for light, medium and heavy game.
00:38:44
Speaker
So we're really in touch the people here. I'm glad we're doing a board game podcast. That's good. yeah ah Party game. You did get the party game as previously mentioned. That was won by Flip 7.
00:38:55
Speaker
So Flip 7 gets you a point. Second was the game. Third was Things in Rings, which I had the game. And Wilmot's Warehouse, which we mentioned, neither of us had heard of, didn't get a mention, unfortunately.
00:39:09
Speaker
Print and play 52 realms adventures. You pulled that one out. So you obviously knew something that I'm, I'm getting thrashed here. It's currently six, one, six, two. to you
00:39:22
Speaker
Is that right? That is right. Far out. Okay. Let's see if I can pull it back. The solo game went to slay this fire, which I did get because you decided you didn't think it was solo. And I still, I agree with you, but I took the point, which in hindsight was a, was a smart move.
00:39:36
Speaker
um thematic game went to SETI which again neither of us had wow let's go to Japan and Lord of the Rings duel from Middle-earth see I thought Rock Hard would have won that because that's like it's very dramatic yeah it's absolutely fine you're playing that game because of the thing yeah know ah war game the winner was ARX which again shame which gives you an unassailable lead ah Podcast was Beyond the Solitaire, which none of us picked that one.
00:40:05
Speaker
Second was Board Game Hot Takes, which none us picked. And third was Space Cast, which none of us picked. So it just shows that there's plenty of good board games out there, board game podcasts out there. And finally the app went to Dude Imperium, which Shane got again, giving Shane a total of eight points ah seven points to my three.
00:40:26
Speaker
So Shane, you are the king of Board Game Geek. You understand it a lot more than I do, Clint. Wow. that's ah That's good. That's pretty good. Comprehensive would be the word i would use. Yeah, that's almost like the election in know Australia.
00:40:43
Speaker
Yeah, that's ah that's a fair comparison. There we go. So that's good for we yeah yeah, it was good. And we will have to do it slightly different for the next one because we can't have two different answers twice. Cause there's only three things nominated for each category. So we are going to do the same thing, but this time for the Spiel des Jahres nominees. So we'll make, I think we'll just make one guess and say, we have to be different.
00:41:11
Speaker
Does that work for you? Yeah. Or do we just, are we happy to have the same guess? I think we we should do the same guess because given there's only three. Yeah, okay. All right. We can work with that.
00:41:22
Speaker
I'm just going to make you the list. All right. Well, Shane, I'm doing a lot of talking, so I'll make it quick. nominat Nominations for the actual Spiel. So this is the the main prize, I guess. We have Bomb Busters, Flip 7, and Crackle or Rackle.
00:41:40
Speaker
It's definitely going to be Flip 7. It's the greatest card game of all time. just have to read it on the box it's on the box um i'm gonna go with bomb busters okay because i didn't mention it but i have played bomb busters i just got a copy of it recently um and i can see that being like uh what was the game that came out a couple of years ago that's just slipped my mind from scorpion last game and i was like reminded me so much of that.
00:42:06
Speaker
i I'll think of it later. But anyway, it's yeah it just gets replayed and replayed and replayed and replayed. So um we'll see how we go there. Then we go on to the next category, which will be the Kinderspiel. So this is junior games. And, of course, with junior games, ah it's Germany.
00:42:25
Speaker
they They're really looking for kid-friendly games. So I think the Spiel is kind of like family weight. Yeah. um this is really like for young kids and then the kettispiel is slightly heavier um so we have Cascadia Junior, Die Massebande, Le Clan des... So they've got it in German and then they've got it in French.
00:42:49
Speaker
like Okay. oh So Le Clan des Souris, I think that's French. um I don't know what that's supposed to be. Sorry to call that German. French listeners. Yes, yes. Sorry, Thomas. I just butchered your language. Okay.
00:43:04
Speaker
but The only German I've ever learned is from singing along to Rammstein. So that's not, they don't sing about board games. It says mice on a cooperative memo mission for two to five children, age four and over or six and over.
00:43:18
Speaker
Okay. Okay. And then top detour. um multi-layered baking for two to four children aged six and over. um So I'm going to go with Top Detort purely because it's a Wolfgang Walsh game. So he seems to do all right of these things. He does. He does. That would have been my choice too. But I'll i'll go something different. I'll go Cascadia Junior. yeah Okie doke. Cascadia Junior.
00:43:46
Speaker
And five i think they only have the three now, don't they? So the Kennerspiel, which I guess is probably the most... It's a gamer's game. gamers Yeah. isn't it yeah And we have a choice of Endeavor Deep Sea, Far Away, Loot.
00:44:04
Speaker
Oh,
00:44:08
Speaker
ah let's go Endeavor Deep Sea. You bugger. I am, that's also coming this week and I have been waiting for that game. I pre-ordered it like months ago. So very keen on that.
00:44:22
Speaker
Oh, but I can just choose it, can I? You can choose it. Yeah. I'm going to go, we're going to double up on that one.

BrizCon Theft & Community Support

00:44:27
Speaker
Doubling down on Endeavor Deep Sea because I played far away and I didn't really like it. So I don't feel like I should vote for that. And I haven't played Loot. So.
00:44:37
Speaker
That is it. Winners will be announced Sunday the 13th of July. So unlike the... Yeah, yeah, we'll be keeping... There's been one away. We won't... You won't know the answers before we do our podcast about our predictions. But I think it's fair to say if you thought it was shenanigans going on, the results clearly showed we had no idea what we were talking about.
00:44:57
Speaker
That's good. All right, mate. Well, it's been a good episode. Well, let's let's ruin it by talking about the worst thing that happened to you at BrizzCon. Okay. Yes, I did want to end on that, didn't know I?
00:45:10
Speaker
Well, BrizzCon, as I said, was a ah really good event. and um However, it was soured um by a scumbag.
00:45:21
Speaker
I'm going to call that person a scumbag instead of going the actual word I was going to call them, but we are a PG-rated show. um And I want to maintain our PG rating.
00:45:33
Speaker
ah you know, they have this bring and buy. you can take your games and, um you know, people can buy your games secondhand. It's like a little secondhand store.
00:45:45
Speaker
And so i got to the end of the Brisbane and I went to go and get all, whatever i had left over. And anyway, they gave me my sheet and I knew two games were not there on the stand.
00:45:59
Speaker
Anyway, some scumbag, so whoever you are out there in Brisbane, and listening to the podcast, um stole my unmatched Cobble and Fog and my unmatched Volume 1.
00:46:13
Speaker
ah You absolute piece of dirt. um ah They also stole, someone else had might have stole another person's game who was also missing a game, so um You know, it's just really disappointing and it's left a sour taste in my mouth that there's, you know, yes, there are scumbags out there, but in our board game community, I thought that people were respectful.
00:46:38
Speaker
And um so to those people that are walking around playing my unmatched Cobble and Fog, um you know, well done. I hope you enjoy it. And it's um disappointing that, um you know, yeah you had to steal at what was a you know really pleasurable event.
00:46:59
Speaker
And, um you know, it just it put a massive sour taste in my mouth and that that our community has those types of scumbags out there.
00:47:11
Speaker
Yeah, that's the hard part for me, just hearing the story was not so much that it happened. It's the fact that it happened at BrizzCon where it's a very, it's, I've been to BrizzCon, it's like a huge community event, different people like tabletop role players come together with like LARPing, with board gaming and all that. And to think that now, next year, you will probably not put games in because it's not for this year. Definitely not. You know, it's it's just it changes the whole dynamic of the event.
00:47:41
Speaker
And and that's and the so the the annoying thing about that is it's it's no one who runs the event's fault. Like, it's not โ€“ I don't know. Maybe they could have done something different to how to check and balance on what goes in and out the doors. But โ€“ You've got to put that on the scumbag that took the games, not on anyone correct he was volunteering their time that weekend. It just sucks. It's definitely not on the Brisco and organisers. It's purely on that scumbag, scumbag or scumbags, because Unmatched is not a small game.
00:48:10
Speaker
So, you know... surely someone would have seen that stuffed up a jumper, but obviously not. yeah And, um, yeah it's, uh, really disappointing. And I felt sorry for the other guy that had one of his games stolen too.
00:48:23
Speaker
Um, and that was a copy of horrified. So you got to think that potentially there's a link there, you know, they've taken cobble and fog volume one of our match. It's similar. It's all very similar. art And, um,
00:48:36
Speaker
Just, you know, anyway, it is what it is. and You know me, mate, too. I probably would have given the person the game if they actually asked me. I'm that type of person. But to steal it is just a piece of crap ah action and I'm, you know...
00:48:50
Speaker
Yeah, that's it. it's The money is not at all the issue. It's it's the action. Yeah. Yeah. But We don't like that in our community and that's like, honestly, I haven't heard that happen anywhere else. So hopefully it's a very isolated incident because, yeah, the greater this the this community is known for just being totally awesome. so It is. It really sucks when you hear things going the other way.
00:49:14
Speaker
Yeah. That's all I'm going to say on it and to that person, enjoy the games. You scumbag.
00:49:23
Speaker
Well, to change tack a little bit and finish on a bit more of a lighter note, I did something last night, which I'm not looking for kudos for, but I thought it'd be a little bit different. So I've kind of gotten a little bit over selling games on on the board game marketplace because it's just a lot of work and I don't like the the but the bargaining that goes on. It's like, i feel I feel like I put my games up at reasonable prices. Yeah.
00:49:51
Speaker
and um Now, side issue to that my daughter is fundraising for Relay for Life. So in at about half past 10 last night, I thought, you know what? I need some space downstairs. I need to clear out some games. I've got some big games there that I just don't play.
00:50:08
Speaker
I'm going to put them up for stupid low prices um on the proviso that if you buy the game, you've got to make a donation to her Relay for Life page. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And I reckon in half an hour, I sold seven of the 10 games I had up there in about a half an hour and she raised about four or 500 bucks. So that's it was, it was just awesome. i just like That's the board game community.
00:50:32
Speaker
Yeah. hundred And I had people messaging me going, I don't care about your games. Give me the link to the page so I can go and donate. Like, it was just awesome. And I um put it up at 10.30 and that was probably a stupid move because when I did get to bed at about half past 12, I couldn't go to sleep because I was just sitting there going, how is this? let me Just feel awesome. Because like like you say, it's not about the money. like I could have sold those games for more money. And yes, they cost me money.
00:50:57
Speaker
But they're literally sitting in a cupboard not getting played.

Upcoming Game Excitement

00:51:01
Speaker
that I've just yeahve made someone's day by giving them somewhat of a cheap day, cheap game. I've made my daughter's day by, you know, she's looked at her fundraising page and it's blown up.
00:51:11
Speaker
So it's like, it was so worth it. So it was just, it was really cool. Shout out to anyone who, not only bought games, but also commented, liked, or just looked at the post and thought it was cool. um I wasn't doing it to be any kind of hero. i was literally thinking, this is a cool, quirky way I could help my daughter out getting in some money raised.
00:51:28
Speaker
That is a fantastic way. And thank you for ending the show like that, mate, because that just made my day hearing how great our community is. So well done to everyone there that supported that.
00:51:42
Speaker
Well, I guess that'll bring us to the end. do you have any games? Obviously, you mentioned you're going to go play Steam Power today. Steam Power, and hopefully we'll be playing New Zealand as well. Yep.
00:51:53
