Grunge Shine: Hey everyone, welcome back to Glenwood's Music Club, where each week we pick an album, legendary or obscure, loved or not, and review it. In this episode, we're reviewing another one of my choices, L7's Bricks Are Heavy.
Grunge Shine: Like I mentioned in last week's episode, this album was on my list of future albums to do, but because of the unfortunate passing of Jennifer Finch on July eighteenth It's been moved up to basically honor her passing.
Grunge Shine: So, all right, let's start it off. Released April 14th, 1992. This is the band's third studio album.
Grunge Shine: It's produced by Butch Fig. It was recorded at Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin and Sound City in Van Nuys, California. Bricks are Heavy is about youthful apathy, so societal critique, feminist defiance, and personal frustration wrapped in heavy grunge and punk rock riffs.
Grunge Shine: The title is a blunt dead band metaphor for a crushing sense of heavy burdens, real life stress, and raw sonic power. um Albums accolades,
Grunge Shine: It was number one on Billboard's Heat Seekers chart and number 160 on the Billboard 200.
Nicole Shine: on Spurs Bureau.
Grunge Shine: Pretend We're Dead reached number eight on the Modern Rock tracks chart. the album The cultural impact of the album, it helped define the early 90s grunge and alternative rock movements. It pushed l seven from the underground music scene into mainstream success. It stands as a landmark feminist statement in rock, rejecting stereotypes placed on women in heavy music.
Grunge Shine: And for the 30th anniversary celebration, there was a newly remastered vinyl reissue and a fall 2022 nationwide tour where they played the album in its entirety.
Grunge Shine: I was fortunate enough to go to the one of the tour stops in Chicago at the Metro. So, babe.
Nicole Shine: So how did you monitor
Grunge Shine: How did you find out about this album? Did you discover it yourself or someone introduced it to you?
Nicole Shine: um oddly enough i've always known about this album i've always known about l7 of course way before i met you but i actually never listened to this album in its entirety before i met you just like faith no more um but i had more of awareness than l7 and faith no more um it's just for whatever reason just never sat down to listen to it for whatever reason
Grunge Shine: Mm-hmm.
Grunge Shine: um Okay.
Grunge Shine: yeah
Nicole Shine: But um I've always known and liked L7 since way before I met you. so
Grunge Shine: well um i discovered l seven thanks to mtv headbangers ball and uh seen the video for pretend we're dead on the uh pre pre-hour which was called like countdown to the ball they just like did the top 10 i think you know voted out or voted songs what have you but um like this album and band has like a special place in my heart because they're the ones that started it all for me and by started it all i mean like my love of just female fronted music yeah as you know babe yeah
Nicole Shine: Yes. yeah Yes. I always make fun of Connor and call him, you know, a girl. But, you know, I like it in a way. You know, I'd rather him much would rather be c pro girl band than not.
Grunge Shine: Then like, oh look at her trying to play.
Nicole Shine: sir I know. o giil then
Grunge Shine: know.
Nicole Shine: And we we were talking about this over dinner that like I've always...
Grunge Shine: um
Nicole Shine: L7 kind of transcends that. like I've always just thought of them as a band. It was never like, oh, this is a girl band.
Grunge Shine: Yeah.
Nicole Shine: It's just a kick-ass band. like I never thought of them as any different than their male contemporaries.
Grunge Shine: Definitely.
Nicole Shine: You know what I mean?
Grunge Shine: Yeah, like the circle.
Nicole Shine: Yeah. Where...
Grunge Shine: Go ahead. Sorry.
Nicole Shine: Like, I'm trying to think of a band where it's like, oh, it's a girl band. Maybe like a, um maybe like a Hole or whatever.
Grunge Shine: yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah like the group that i like hung around with at that time like
Nicole Shine: Don't get me wrong, I love, I know I'm a catchy, but I do love Hole um a lot. But um to me, their aesthetic was more tied into we are a girl band.
Nicole Shine: Whereas L7, it was just a kick-ass band. Like, i never was like, oh, this is a girl band. Yeah.
Grunge Shine: I remember just really gravitating towards the band and like normally the guys, you know, they would have ripped on, you know, oh a girl in the band. But no, even they were like, no, they're badass, man.
Nicole Shine: Mm-hmm.
Grunge Shine: So, yeah. All right. Let's get into the album. Wargasm. A cynical anti-war commentary mocking patriotism, media's Sanitization of conflict and the grim reality of military casualties.
Nicole Shine: see
Grunge Shine: Thoughts on wargasm.
Nicole Shine: like this one a lot. I really like the lyrics. um There's a lot of songs on here where I kind of locked into the lyrics a lot.
Grunge Shine: Yeah.
Nicole Shine: And I really, really like the lyrics on this one. um Sadly, it's still relevant.
Grunge Shine: Right? Yeah. i was going to say.
Nicole Shine: a It's very relevant to today, unfortunately. So I think that's kind of It made me lock in a little bit. A lot of their songs on here are actually, the lyrics to them are actually, sadly, still relevant today.
Nicole Shine: But yeah, this one's a good one.
Grunge Shine: yeah right like the lyrics are what get me like there are so many good like lines and the verses and stuff but just really fucking like stick out to you when you're listening to it not just this song but yeah
Nicole Shine: Yeah, it's like, yeah, it's like it was just released 92. The lyrics should not still be relevant, but unfortunately they are.
Grunge Shine: Yeah, they shouldn't. But like I feel like war is just one of those things that it's like every generation is going to have to deal with the bullshit you know of it.
Nicole Shine: Yeah, unfortunately.
Grunge Shine: Unfortunately, you're right. But yeah, it's a great album opener. I love the fucking title. um It's no slow buildup to or intro. It just goes from zero to 100.
Nicole Shine: Yeah, their songs are very just like, uh.
Grunge Shine: Yeah, like in your fucking face, you know.
Nicole Shine: Yeah. For sure.
Grunge Shine: For sure. All right. Next song is Scrap.
Nicole Shine: Alright.
Grunge Shine: Based on a real life chaotic acquaintance from their early LA punk days, detailing substance abuse and misguided spiritual seeking. Thoughts on Scrap?
Nicole Shine: This one's okay. It's... Yeah. It's okay. It's... Like, I don't dislike it. It's a good song.
Grunge Shine: Yeah.
Nicole Shine: um But it's not as profound as the, I would say, as the lyrics between this one and one after it. It's just kind of like, okay.
Nicole Shine: Yeah, yeah.
Grunge Shine: Yeah, yeah.
Nicole Shine: feel like, like, story.
Grunge Shine: I feel like it's like storytime song, you know?
Nicole Shine: feel like Yeah. I like, it's good songs, but it's like, hey,
Grunge Shine: It's got a funny story. um I like Don and his screams and the humorous lyrics. But yeah, it's it's good song, but it's more like, hey, here's a story of some weird guy.
Nicole Shine: let's go.
Nicole Shine: Yeah.
Grunge Shine: well Next song, Pretend We're Dead. Disguised as a detached Generation X anthem about societal apathy and political phoniness. It actually stems from the numbness of a painful romantic breakup.
Grunge Shine: Thoughts on pretend we're dead.
Nicole Shine: You know i gotta do it.
Grunge Shine: I knew it.
Nicole Shine: This is a radio song. It's the song from the radio. It's the song that people name when you ask if you like the band.
Grunge Shine: 100% true. um Yeah, this is the one that started it all for me. Like I said earlier. um it's simple yet catchy song and even though it's the hit single like it's actually probably one of my favorite songs of all time so
Nicole Shine: Yeah. It's very, it brings me back to Guitar Hero.
Grunge Shine: yeah yeah it was so much fun to play on man
Nicole Shine: Yeah. This is the Guitar Hero song.
Nicole Shine: Yeah. But a good song, yeah.
Grunge Shine: Yeah, yeah.
Nicole Shine: Yeah.
Grunge Shine: Like, I'm stopping myself from going off on tangent on them trying to, they're trying to bring back Guitar Hero under a different name, and I'm totally down for it because I miss those days.
Nicole Shine: No, you're right. You're right. It's. Yeah.
Grunge Shine: All right, next song, Diet Pill. A heavy, groovy exploration of body image pressures, obsession, and the destructive lengths people go to alter how they look.
Grunge Shine: Thoughts on Diet Pill.
Nicole Shine: I really like the lyrics on this one, like, a lot. As a, you know, a woman can relate, and men to, men go through body image, even though we don't pretend like they pretend like they don't.
Nicole Shine: But, um um yeah, I really like the tongue-in-cheek.
Grunge Shine: Yeah.
Nicole Shine: um lyrics of this one. I definitely can relate as someone who goes up and down with their weight and, you know, now that I'm 45, fuck it, I look how i look.
Nicole Shine: But, you know, chunky but funky is the true story, I would say. um but yeah, lot. Yeah,
Grunge Shine: Yeah, I do too. I love the guitar on the pre-chorus and just the chorus to the song. Like, again, the lyrics on this album are so like tongue-in-cheek funny, but they're so poignant, you know?
Grunge Shine: Like, they find a lot of great ways to say what they're trying to say.
Nicole Shine: Yeah, this one was actually in my running as one of my favorites. will see if it We'll see if it made it.
Grunge Shine: Oh. Okay.
Nicole Shine: But we'll get there.
Grunge Shine: Nice. I would not have thought of that.

Grunge Shine: cool all right next track everglade a fierce aggressive tale of mosh pit retaliation and female agency against creeps or unwanted advances in crowded spaces thoughts on everglade
Nicole Shine: Okay, so this is where it starts to go down. It's not bad, but it's where it starts to dip a little bit. And then this album kind of dips in the middle.
Grunge Shine: okay
Nicole Shine: It's kind of like a roll. This album is very much, when I was saying I had thoughts, it's very much like a roller coaster.
Grunge Shine: Yeah. Okay.
Nicole Shine: Like, the beginning is really high, and it kind of dips, and then it goes down, down and then it goes shoots all the way back up. So it's very much it's very much like a rollercoaster. And this is kind of where the rollercoaster kind just starts dipping a little bit for me.
Grunge Shine: Okay.
Nicole Shine: i I didn't really enjoy this It's okay. It's not the worst song on the album. We'll get there.
Grunge Shine: Yeah.
Nicole Shine: um But it's it's okay.
Grunge Shine: I get that.
Nicole Shine: Yeah.
Grunge Shine: Yeah.
Nicole Shine: It's kind of like, meh.
Grunge Shine: like yeah um yeah it's funny because the lyrics of this song make me think of our issues when go to a concert you know you're you're a talking guy versus my tall guy hu so yeah it's it's a good song um i enjoy it all right next track slide
Nicole Shine: Yeah, it's funny because the lyrics of this song are issues going concert.
Nicole Shine: yeah
Grunge Shine: A raw track focused on alienation, internal friction, and the psychological weight of everyday life. Thoughts on slide.
Nicole Shine: Again, we're...
Grunge Shine: We're on the low part for you.
Nicole Shine: Yeah, we're the meh.
Grunge Shine: Okay.
Nicole Shine: i I thought this was going to be the song I like the least, but it's not. It's still kind of on the meh.
Grunge Shine: Oh, okay. ah Okay. Gotcha.
Nicole Shine: um But yeah, it it's kind of okay. It's kind of like meh again. Like I said, the middle of this album is very meh to me.
Nicole Shine: Not terrible. It's not great. It's just...
Grunge Shine: Yeah, like i I like this song as well, but I get what you're saying with this song and Everglades. Like there are a lot of other songs that are just like very like, all right, here comes that song, you know?
Nicole Shine: lot of other songs that are just like very, I remember that song. But yeah, I think it's a pretty good song.
Grunge Shine: um But yeah, I think it's a pretty good song. i just put like the song on like so many other the songs on the album have just great verse lines.
Nicole Shine: just great.
Grunge Shine: Every song, I think, just has like a at least one good killer verse line, um regardless of you know liking the song as much as the previous or song later on the album.
Grunge Shine: All right, next track. One more thing. a weary, confrontational track addressing manipulative partners and a final breaking point in a dying relationship.
Grunge Shine: Thoughts on one more thing.
Nicole Shine: track, one more thing. Okay, this it really starts to dip for me, where I think it was good, good, good. And, you know, then it was then coasting. And this one's where it kind of, the rollercoaster kind of starts to go down.
Nicole Shine: um
Grunge Shine: Really? Okay.
Nicole Shine: Did not like this song.
Grunge Shine: Yeah, yeah,
Nicole Shine: they they it's it's still not well we'll get there but i i didn't like they do this thing and maybe it's because i kind of have a my ears have kind of uh got used really used to complex yeah

Nicole Shine: um themes and lyrics and in in time signatures or whatever. But they do this thing on their songs that I really started to notice.
Grunge Shine: yeah
Nicole Shine: You know, i know those patterns where they say the name of the the title of the song in the chorus over and over again.
Grunge Shine: Yeah.
Grunge Shine: Yeah.
Nicole Shine: And that kind of like after a while it kind of started to you know, like, uh,
Grunge Shine: Okay. I feel like a lot like a lot of grungy bands would do that.
Grunge Shine: At least some of the bands I listen to, like that feels very of the time.
Nicole Shine: Yeah.
Grunge Shine: Yeah.
Nicole Shine: Yeah. And it's like. You say one more thing. One more time. But. In this chorus. But
Grunge Shine: um that's hilarious because i actually fucking love this song um it's actually uh stand out on the album for me it's like depending on my mood sometimes i can like this song more than pretend we're dead um like whenever i'm feeling the pressure of something or when i'm having a bad day i listen to the song it just helps me cope and feel bit better at the situation so yeah
Nicole Shine: Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.
Grunge Shine: David Sloan- It just hits me but alright next song Mr integrity surf punk hybrids skewering false idols hypocritical moral authorities and fake self righteous figures in the scene thoughts on Mr integrity.

Nicole Shine: again we're we're in that downward part um it's it's not i don't it doesn't grade on my nerves as much as uh one more thing but um yeah it's so yeah

Nicole Shine: yeah no you know i get my honest opinion
Grunge Shine: yeah totally. That's all we want, for sure. um i love the way this song is done in the surf punk, and um you know, tone. And the bongos are pretty pretty awesome um in there. So, all right.
Grunge Shine: Next song is Monster. A heavy riffing expression of feeling monstrous, unhinged, or pushed to the dark side by external pressures. Thoughts on monster.
Nicole Shine: I really really, really, really, really do not like this song.

Nicole Shine: I really, really, really, really do not like this song.
Grunge Shine: Oh, okay. All right.
Nicole Shine: I found it very cheesy, especially when she does her monster voice. i was like oh i was like, okay, I already wasn't liking this song.

Grunge Shine: Yep. I think a lot of people like heard of L7 through this song and pretend we're dead. Yeah. Um, Yeah, my thoughts were this is one of those songs that I put on when I'm pissed off about something, someone, etc.
Grunge Shine: It's just a good fucking venting song to listen to and sing along to and release that energy, you know? Because everyone can relate, you know?
Nicole Shine: Yeah. Yeah. And even though they do that thing where they do the chorus and the title of the song and the chorus again, but this time it works.
Grunge Shine: And it's funny too.
Nicole Shine: Yeah.
Grunge Shine: Well, because it's a subject that's close to your heart. Like, everyone's heart But no, i I kind of thought you would have been like, when she starts doing that, yeah you know, you'd be like, okay, okay.
Nicole Shine: No, no.
Nicole Shine: Yeah, but no, no.
Grunge Shine: You're just saying it over and over. But it matches the energy of the song.

Grunge Shine: It really works. All right. Next and last song on the album, This Ain't Pleasure. A harsh closer, capturing frustration, lack of fulfillment, and the rejection of hollow experiences disguised as fun.
Grunge Shine: Thoughts on This Ain't Pleasure?
Nicole Shine: I like this one. I really like the way it starts.
Grunge Shine: Yeah.
Nicole Shine: Like, they have a lot of good starts, the songs. And it's almost like, almost sounds like it was about to be a metal song, but then it doesn't.
Grunge Shine: Yeah. Yeah.
Nicole Shine: And then it fakes you out. And it kind of sounds like it's metal again, and then fakes you out.
Grunge Shine: Yeah.
Nicole Shine: and lia I was like, hey.
Grunge Shine: yeah They're like psych.
Nicole Shine: I know, but it's a good one. yeah Good closer.
Grunge Shine: Right. I put not a bad closer. um i just feel like it doesn't have the same en energy as the rest of the songs on the album.
Nicole Shine: and I kind of put kind of wonder if it was a girl way I put it me I don't I'll do my favorite first of course you know what it's gonna be shit I mean come on yeah
Grunge Shine: um And I kind of I put I kind of wonder her if it was a throwaway and they just put it on the album. I don't know. You know, but. All right. So that was the track by track run through.
Grunge Shine: Favorite and least favorite songs. What's your favorite?
Grunge Shine: Yep.

Nicole Shine: Um, I thought, like, like I said, Diet Pill was in a running, but come on, shitless is, anybody who knows me knows that it can only be shitless. Like, yeah if you know me for more than 10 seconds, you know that it's not going to be anything other than shitless.

Nicole Shine: Slider Everglades. But like I said when we went over Monster, I really, really, really, really don't like this song. And shout out to Jennifer Gardner. i hate Susie Gardner. I'm sorry.
Nicole Shine: Because I'm looking at the writers, and I see this is the only one like she wrote by herself.
Grunge Shine: Yeah. Yeah.

Nicole Shine: So I'm sorry. But...
Grunge Shine: ah I mean, if it ain't your thing, it ain't your thing, you know.
Nicole Shine: uh it's just it's bad and then when she did that whole like monster voice yeah and um and um i usually love camp like i'm a campy kind of person like i said i love guys i'm a god so i love camp but it just it's just i think because ah it it kind of clashed so much with the rest of the vibe of the album it's like oh punk po qua walkk and then this one song where it's like

Nicole Shine: it just It just didn't work for me, but... yeah. Hmm. Hmm.
Grunge Shine: um My least favorite is The Same Pleasure.
Nicole Shine: Hmm.
Grunge Shine: um Like I said, it just... Yeah, it it just has a different vibe to me. I feel like Shitless would have been a fucking killer and, you know, go out yelling to the album type of thing.

Grunge Shine: um But yeah, so. All right. so if you had never heard of a band, would this album make you want to hear more from them?
Nicole Shine: Okay, they're like glaring into my soul right now. Um, as she does,

Nicole Shine: honestly i'm going to say no and it's not because i think the album is a bad album per se for what it is for the genre it is for what it is um it's just that this is just not my particular bag just much like you were saying with um um jeff buckley were you like i think this is more your bag than my bag

Nicole Shine: um this is just not my like I try to be open to all kinds of music but this is just not my particular bag um of music um it's a good album for what it is but it's just not my bag

Nicole Shine: There's been many times when you put on L7. Yeah.

Nicole Shine: And I'm just like, okay, I'm vibing out to it, but it's not going be something I put on myself. Yeah.
Grunge Shine: ears. But, on. Um. but come on um Yeah, I would definitely be curious. I mean, no surprise there. I was, and I kept going. um I just, at the time, the album had so much energy to it, and it felt like it came through.
Grunge Shine: It's funny, I had the cassette tape, and I actually wore it out to where it started making that high and low noise, where the tape starts warping, like, yeah.
Nicole Shine: with a
Grunge Shine: wow and you're like, ah, fuck, I got a good new tape, you know? But yeah, yeah. All right, so if you want to go through our album ranking scale.

Nicole Shine: All right, so. Our album ranking scale is based on skips. um ah Zero skips is a perfect no notes album.

Nicole Shine: Two skips is a classic album, still better than 90 to 95% of most albums you'll ever hear. Three skips is good. It's good.

Nicole Shine: you know 13 14 years old even all the way up to like 17 um so I used to really enjoy like very two three minute four on the floor kind of songs but I feel like the older I got the more my my eardrums just I started vibrating on a higher frequency

Nicole Shine: and And I enjoy, i think when I'm dancing, it's a so like when I listen to rock music, it's like that.

Nicole Shine: When I listen to dance music, because dance music is very as simple, like, driving kind of beat that you can dance to.

Nicole Shine: then, yeah, nobody wants to hear, like, a fucking 11, 13 times signature and try to figure out how to dance to that shit.

Nicole Shine: But, you know what I mean? But, like, when I'm listening to rock music, I think i my my ears respond to a little bit more of a complex kind of thing, but Oh yeah, not a bad album still.
