Oral Ties and Torticollis: A Guide to Infant Care

Newbies host Kaile Garcia talks with pediatric physical therapist Meagan O’Neill about how oral restrictions and oral motor dysfunction can affect a baby’s whole body, not just feeding.

O’Neill defines torticollis, signs parents can notice (head tilt/rotation, head flattening, craniofacial asymmetry), why early PT intervention matters versus a “wait and see” approach, and potential impacts on head shape and motor skills.

She explains oral motor dysfunction as coordination issues of the lips, tongue, cheeks, and jaw, with signs like shallow latch, clicking, milk loss, gagging, coughing, bottle difficulty, and trouble keeping a pacifier in.

The episode covers gentle bodywork, fascia connections from tongue through the body, why tongue ties need therapy and aftercare beyond release, and how to find qualified specialists (IBCLC, OT, SLP, PT, pediatric dentist), including laser vs scissor releases. O’Neill advises parents to trust their gut and seek help early, including virtual options.
