Introduction and Maryland Death Fest Overview

00:00:00
Speaker
Tonight on Podcasts and Down we're talking Maryland Death Fest, hon! Hey, little middle nation, it is I, Tim! I'm from Ballmer!
00:00:14
Speaker
Joining me is Mike. He's from Ballmer. We're talking about Maryland Death Fest, best death fest in town. For those who don't know, Ballmer has his own accent and you're going to hear plenty when you come from, from the shore or from Pennsylvania or from wherever to, uh, to, uh, listen to some death metal. Sorry.
00:00:39
Speaker
I can't do that. You what? You're but you're from Maryland, hon. Yeah, I did. All right. I know I was a PG man. Everyone attending death fest. If you want to hear that, you're not going to hear it in the city. You got to go basically east of the city. Dundalk, Essex, Middle River. That's where you're going to hear the.

Venue Details and History

00:01:07
Speaker
The Balmer accent doesn't really exist in the city. So what I wanted to do for our Maryland, the podcast that I'm down, Maryland Death Fest XIX, what is that? 1919 episode was I wanted to go through the entire list of bands and talk about each one. Then I saw the list of bands. I said, no way we're going to do that. That's a lot. Too fucking many of them.
00:01:37
Speaker
but because of my dying bride dropping. Okay. So my dying bride dropped off. They, they cancel every, everything they were doing, Agalok replaced them. And then suddenly everyone I know was going except me. Oh no. Yeah. I am not able to make it. So, uh, hopefully we'll have a report from,
00:02:06
Speaker
from everyone who does go. But Maryland Death Fest goes from Wednesday, May 22, all the way through the entire Memorial Day weekend through May 26. And it is all they've had it a few places now, but now it is all contained in Marketplace or what they call Power Plant Live. So
00:02:33
Speaker
There are a few venues there. There's Angels Rockbar, there's Rams Head Live, and there's Soundstage. And those are all different capacity venues. So, like, Angels Rockbar, like, holds 100 or so. Baltimore Soundstage holds 1,000 or so. Rams Head holds, I think, 3,000?
00:02:56
Speaker
I think, and then there's outdoor stages. So that's why, so I mean, they literally have five stages going. There's two outdoor stages. I believe power plant, live in the marketplace. And, uh, yeah, it's a lot of fucking bands. Yeah. When I went, it was still in some parking lot somewhere. So it's, they moved it downtown.
00:03:24
Speaker
I went to the first three. I've been to the first three, and then I went to 10, and then I haven't been to anything else. Well, ironically, when I went, my dying bride played. No, I went one other time, actually. But God knows when. Okay, anyway, the first two were at the Thunderdome. Oh, my God, I love the Thunderdome. That's long gone.
00:03:52
Speaker
yeah the third was at the house of rock oh i hated that place that's that's gone as well oh boy okay yeah the house of rock was like is north of the city actually yeah actually if it was at the house of rock on i believe that's on bel air road bel air road you might hear some balmer accent on
00:04:13
Speaker
But yeah, the House of Rock is one of those venues that European bands hit because they think that the distance between Maryland and Virginia is too great to drive, you know what I mean?

Unofficial Events and Wednesday/Thursday Lineups

00:04:24
Speaker
Like they'll hit, they'll play it like they would have played at Jack's, which was the venue to play at. And then they would have played at House of Rock, which is like an hour and a half away or something like that. Or an hour away or whatever it is, but it's not far enough to make a difference.
00:04:44
Speaker
But yeah, yeah. So and then, yeah, when I the next time I saw I went to Maryland Death Fest, it was over and basically the remnants of sonar. Yeah. Also gone. Yeah. They're killing venues. I think sidebar had.
00:05:07
Speaker
like unofficial Maryland Death Fest concerts in addition, which seems like a bad idea to me, you know? Well, it was OK because it sort of made sense because they were really close to the whole venue. So if you were like in the know, you just wander over to the sidebar. This is this is when it was over at Sonar. It doesn't make as much sense now that it's all in downtown. Yeah, you can still walk to the sidebar from.
00:05:37
Speaker
from soundstage, it's just a bit of a hike. It's a big hike. Well, a real big hike would have been going up to fucking House of Rock or whatever. Yeah, sure enough. So how about let's go through the days and like, I'm so out of it, I haven't heard of most of these bands. So if you...
00:06:07
Speaker
That was always sort of the case. Yeah. All right. I mean, I'll tell you this, I'll go through what I know. I'm not necessarily the most hip or in the know, but perfect. I recommend by the way, looking at the set times schedule because that breaks it out into days and stages, which is a way more helpful.
00:06:33
Speaker
So starting with Wednesday, May 22nd, that's only Rams head and sound stage. So they have not, sounds like they're not blocking off the whole area yet. So Sodom, I think is pretty well known. Yes. Now what's interesting about Sodom is they're also playing Friday. Did you notice this? They're also playing Thursday. That's what I meant.
00:06:58
Speaker
Thursday. They are not playing Friday. So they are doing an hour and a half set on Wednesday and then a nice slim hour the next day. That's pretty cool. At a bigger venue. I mean, I'll be honest though, I don't know Sodom that well. I know of them.
00:07:19
Speaker
Yeah, I've seen them in Europe, and an hour and a half is probably too much Sodom. And that's going to be a refrain from me. A lot of these bands, these sets are like, that's an awfully long set for this band. Yeah, I mean, honestly, that's typically the reason I haven't gone to more death vests.

Friday Highlights and Saturday Challenges

00:07:42
Speaker
It's just too much death metal all at once for me.
00:07:47
Speaker
But other other interesting bands from Wednesday, midnight. I know they've been around. Midnight is great. I saw that. They're like crossover thrash. And then I or maybe just thrash. Yeah, atheist. Melochech is very good. All right. Tell me about Melochech. I don't know about them.
00:08:09
Speaker
I mean, they're pretty like that. What? It's like blackened. And I don't know if you call it black metal. It's fast. All right. They call it a little bit of melody. They call it black death. Middle Eastern folk metal. That is not what I was expecting. It's very interesting. It's good stuff. They are from.
00:08:36
Speaker
Germany now, Netherland slash France before, and Jerusalem Bethlehem early. I mean, it's King of Fire in Hebrew. Well, that's pretty cool. I might have to check this band out, actually. This sounds really good. Meliche is pretty cool. Meliche is cool. That's all I know. I don't know anybody else. Okay. On Wednesday.
00:09:00
Speaker
Looking at Thursday. Yeah, I don't either. Well, no, I take that back. I've heard of alters. I don't know anything about them. Also, Morpheus descends. I feel like it's a bad idea to name your band after a character from a terrible movie franchise, The Matrix. Is that really what it is? No, I doubt it. I don't know.
00:09:24
Speaker
All right, so Thursday, Thursday is interesting because Soundstage has two bands done before anyone else, there's any other music. Rams had depulsed. I feel like bands like this are trying very hard to come up with new ways to talk about murders. I have depulsed the victim, you know?
00:09:55
Speaker
Yeah, of these bands, I've heard of coffins. I haven't heard, but I believe they're dudes. I've also heard of coffins. But I've heard they're all excellent. And I know Broken Hope. If I recall, they were more like West Coast-ish Gorgrind, maybe, or maybe in that era. I could be totally off. I could be totally wrong.
00:10:25
Speaker
They are death metal from Chicago. I am not. Yeah, I'm totally wrong. Okay. Similar artists. Cannibal corpse suffocation, dying feet is skinless. It's all other bands. Yeah. Okay. That came out stupid, but you know what I'm trying to say. Yeah, I get you. Okay. What's, what's up with this band here with the apostrophe in it?
00:10:55
Speaker
I have no idea. They are. They are. De Québec. Death Metal. Yeah, they're they're from Langue, Quebec. It's interesting how many of these bands haven't released anything lately. Huh? There's also a band called Stabbing, which I thought was funny. You think that would have been taken?
00:11:25
Speaker
That's amazing. Okay, so then we get to Friday. Now Friday has all five stages in effect. Yeah, so I mean, we got Ahab. Okay, tell me about Ahab. They are basically funeral doom. And as far as I know, they sing primarily about Moby Dick.
00:11:50
Speaker
according to metal archives, their lyrical themes are nautical literature. Are they as tedious as Moby? Have you ever read Moby Dick? No, there's like very long chapters about the very detailed and totally unrelated to the story. Just nautical things like
00:12:16
Speaker
Yeah. And it's just like, it has nothing to do with anything. And that's why the book is, I think it was getting paid by the word. Okay. We also got monstrosity. Yep. Classic, classic. Agilac, which is a miracle. Yeah. So I saw them probably more than 10 years ago now, I think, uh, in Norway.
00:12:43
Speaker
And I was like, what? That's the last time I'll ever see them. Because they broke up later after the mantle. Right. No, after the serpent and the spear. Right. And now what's the bullshit? Getting back together playing fests. That's some bullshit. No, they're great. They would be the sole reason I go if I, if I were able to go. We also got Arcturus.
00:13:11
Speaker
Okay, so Arc Tourists played the same festival as Agalok in Norway. Arc Tourists, like, their stage show is as weird as their music. It's fucking weird. I'm very excited. Arc Tourists was one of the, like, okay, I realize that this is not one of their, like, revered albums, but the Sham Mirrors was one of the earlier albums I ever heard. I have that one.
00:13:39
Speaker
And I really enjoyed it. I know over time, it's like, yeah, this isn't really what they're known for, but I still really like the sham mirrors. So I'm really excited to see them in all their weirdness. I like anything RCS Vortex sings on. Nice. Sham mirrors was garm. Yeah, well, you know, those guys just rotate in and out. Really? Yeah, basically.
00:14:05
Speaker
Okay. I know. Is that defeated sanity? I see there defeated sanity. There are first, they're, they're the first outside outdoor band marketplace at a four 50 on Saturday, Friday, Friday. I'm one day off. I don't know why. And Rams had, we've got 1349
00:14:28
Speaker
Well, this is some bullshit. This is a big missed opportunity. They're playing from 12 15 a.m. to 1 0 5 a.m. Wow. Yeah. Their last at Ram said, why are they not at 1 49 in the afternoon? They should absolutely be starting at 13 49. It's a bullshit.
00:14:55
Speaker
OK, I don't know the rest of the bands. Those are Spectral Rube. Noctem is Latin for night. Imperialist, one master. Wasn't that the point of a master? At soundstage, I know I've heard of weekend nachos, but I. I like Broda Quinn. I thought I didn't. I thought it was like a buffet. Can I get some weekend nachos? Right. I know people that love Broda Quinn.
00:15:26
Speaker
Yeah, they're, I like them. They're very one note, right? Like everything is just. They're playing for 45 minutes. So that's a long time for that note. I would love to see them, but I'm not going to pay an extra for an extra ticket to go see just them. Oh, does your ticket only get you into marketplace?
00:15:57
Speaker
So Power Plant, Power Plant Live and Marketplace. The thing is, I want to see Agilac, Arcturus and Ahab so much. I really like even with Defeated Sanity or Noire and Monstrosity, that's the best bang for your buck right there. Yeah, I agree. Yeah, that one ticket. You can do without all this other stuff. All right.
00:16:24
Speaker
Angels rock bar. I don't know one of these. I can't read. Okay. There's torture. There's torturous descent entrail, exphyxiation, putrose, sect and drugs of faith. Okay. Yeah. I don't know any of those. All right. Now entrail, exphyxiation. They just pick two metal words. These don't make sense together.
00:16:50
Speaker
Entrails have been removed. They don't need oxygen. But you can start of a living body anymore. Oh, it's an association with entrails. Yes. They need to make this clearer. I think it's a bad band name. And they have like the DemiLik font. You know what I mean? Like everything sticks with like hairs coming off of it.
00:17:16
Speaker
OK. That doesn't. I got to look up weekend nachos before we move on. I'd be I'm going to be surprised if they're on Metal Archives weekend nachos. I'll be damned. Power violence slash sludge metal. OK, power violence. And they're going to play for fucking 45 minutes. That's like 300 songs. What the fuck? They are. They're from Chicago.
00:17:47
Speaker
Their latest album, which came out a while ago, is called Apology. And the, oh god, the album covers an X-ray of two broken hands. Jesus Christ. Yeah, their song titles are all like, song lengths are mostly around three minutes tops. A lot of them are like 90 seconds. Yeah. Alrighty. Alright, moving on to Saturday.
00:18:17
Speaker
OK, I've heard of Soylent Green. I've heard of Vomitori. Skinless was at the first death metal show I ever saw. Yes, this is a good story. I know the story. Yeah, I we went to sidebar and got to see the Berserker, Skinless, Gorguts and Dying Fetus. That was my first death metal show. I was at Radiohead when before they got popular, there was only like three people there, man.
00:18:47
Speaker
The sidebar was a bit more of an established venue at that point. Not that it was very big, but actual bands played there. Sidebar is allegedly coming back. They've been working on it, but it's just a dive punk bar, metal bar. That's all it is in a good way. I see Forbidden is playing. I assume that's the thrash band.
00:19:16
Speaker
dismember playing at Marketplace, if I couldn't make that work, I would. Like dismembers, fabulous. If I recall correctly, aren't they like, yeah, I think they're like the original, they're that like mellow death, but it's from extremely early on.
00:19:45
Speaker
man, I would do a lot. I wish I could see them, but it's just, unfortunately this whole day, there's the only people that I really want to see badly are them forbidden is good, but not $90 per ticket.

Sunday Lineup and Band Commentary

00:20:05
Speaker
Yeah. And that's the thing. Like the rest of this, I don't, I literally don't know any other, you know, vacant ice. Oh, we're getting there. We're getting there. All right.
00:20:16
Speaker
Ram's head live. Impure yellow eyes, death hammer, dread sovereign, spectral voice, morque. Dude, Robin Williams is dead. It is a death fest. Yeah, I don't know shit about them. Yeah, exactly. All right. Soundstage. Noisy neighbors. Sounds annoying. Contaminated Vami noir. Intestinal discord. See, it's the death metal word bank again.
00:20:45
Speaker
I do know, I know Intestinal Discord. Are they different than Visceral Discord? Maybe I'm thinking of Visceral Discord. Exactly. There's a band with like two letters that don't exist. Yacko Se. I have heard of that band. I don't know anything about them, but I've seen that name.
00:21:10
Speaker
I lost my, uh, there it is. Yeah. Yeah. Go say zero entries. Cause I don't know how to, how to type. Lack of interest. Hey, that's a good name for that band. Cause I don't fucking care. Angels rock bar for Saturday. We're still on Saturday cemetery piss ninth realm. I believe is a local Baltimore band.
00:21:41
Speaker
Oh, wow. Now, is this Nixle or Neil? Which one? It's an X. Oh. Vacantize. Doom Metal Band from New England. We've played with them before. They're amazing. Congratulations for getting such a great spot. Yeah. Yeah, that is awesome.
00:22:02
Speaker
I wonder how much can I just go to angels that should cost like 10 bucks and then imperialist and then hemorrhage late earlier hemorrhage has too many vowels. There's a, there's a big, Oh, that's why I was going to say there's a big weird break in all the sets, but it's because like dismembers playing and no one's playing against dismembered similarly for, uh,
00:22:29
Speaker
Friday, when Agalok's playing, no one else is playing. You will, you will like Agalok or you can get fucked, you know. All right. All right. Yeah, that's it. All right. So then Sunday. Got all the stages going again. Yeah, so Gorguts and Cryptopsy. And then Bloodbath. Oh. Bloodbath in the evening.
00:22:56
Speaker
I like them best with Mikhail Akkerfeld because it gives me hope that he's not going to shit out another crappy Opeth album. That marketplace you got Mayhem, Abbas, Abbeth, Primordial. That's a good lineup right there. Yeah, I mean that's a good day.
00:23:20
Speaker
Yeah, if you could get a ticket to just mark marketplace and power plant live on Sunday, you'd have a good time. Ripper, I assume that's not Tim Ripper Owens because that'd just be weird. I mean, the anvil played. Oh, I saw them. They were all right. Oh, there's a billion bands called Ripper.
00:23:45
Speaker
There's a Chilean thrash metal band, a Colombian speed metal band, a French heavy metal band, a Paraguayan thrash metal band, four bands from the United States and one band. Oh, uh, there's a Brazilian ripper with e, uh, um, louts over the E. Nice. We'll never know who it is.
00:24:09
Speaker
Okay. Uh, at Ram's head, we got Archgoat. I don't really know. I can't even read this logo. Mortuary Drape. Is that what that is? Okay. I know of them. Grave Miasma. I know of them. I cannot read this next logo. Something with an S? Sin Mara. Spirit Possession. And Daeva. D-A-E-V-A. That's actually just Dave.
00:24:38
Speaker
Dave. He's a Dave. They're from Italy. Our Italian friends can go visit Balmers, Little Italy. They're blocks from here. But don't park over there because that's where my car got broken into. They stole my chain mail. Yes, I'm serious. I remember it well. All right. Soundstage.
00:25:05
Speaker
We got Extortion, who I don't know. Jig-I, who I do know. They're Gorgrind and they're great. And I'm actually sort of pissed that I would miss them. But I can't justify going to soundstage just for Jig-I. I know in Hume, they've played at a prior death fest. One of the earlier ones. And I don't know the rest of these. Necessary death, organ failure, blue holocaust. I guess it's like...
00:25:34
Speaker
You know those blue talkies, it's the same thing, only blue. Iron Lung, there's a good band name. Arch Agathos. All right. And the Angels Rockbar, P. Lau. I'm getting there. Intimidation Display, another Baltimore band, by the way. Nuclear Tomb, they've been around.
00:25:59
Speaker
go wet to you. And then, so you already said Poon tickler, but when I, but I saw it, I read Poon tickler. All right. Who's closing? So the very like mortuary drape is playing the latest out of any of these bands. And then that puts an end to your death vest experience. So are.
00:26:31
Speaker
Okay.

Local Food and Travel Tips

00:26:33
Speaker
Oh, okay. So Angel's rock bar, I think is free with any any other, any other, any other ticket. It says free events with same days to MDF ticket. Oh, cemetery piss. Did we say that already? I actually know cemetery piss.
00:26:58
Speaker
I don't know, but it just sounded to me like you're like, Oh, cemetery piss. Oh yeah. Yeah. I see free events with same days, MDF ticket. The, uh, long Sodom show we were talking about is technically the pre-fest practical information. All right. I'm going to, as a native Baltimorean, fine. Let me skim their practical information.
00:27:26
Speaker
See if there's anything like, okay. So like that block, it's, it's basically two blocks, right? And it looks like they're going to have vendors, but there are stores going on. Are these poor, like, are those poor guys at seven 11 and at the deal with sweaty metal heads all weekend? Oh boy. Uh, it says convenient parking options include Harbor park garage. Here's a tip. Get spot hero. Then you can go in and out.
00:27:57
Speaker
Oh, I didn't know that. Yes, you're welcome. Let's see. Wristband redemption allowed slash forbidden reentry is permitted at all venues. Backpacks and purses allowed, but subject to search sealed water bottles are permitted throughout the festival grounds. That's nice. Medical or diabetic needs may bring stuff. Set times, band merchandise, vendors. Oh,
00:28:25
Speaker
Metal merch vendors. Dave's Metal. Kinky Earrings. Mexico Steel. Necronomicharm. Necronomicharm. Lock and shock. MM Fabrications. Oh, it's funny that Vienna Music Exchange is there because like
00:28:48
Speaker
I mean, other things are called like Last Nightmare, Mutilated Record. Vienna Music Exchange is a record store. It's like the size of a bedroom in Vienna, Virginia. And it's like all metal. All right, food vendors, at least tavern. They got them crab cakes.
00:29:12
Speaker
Uh, Thai food, taco town, sound stage, grill, underground pizza, sea wagon, or sugar exchange. All right. These are, they're not going to give you, you're not going to get the full Baltimore experience. You don't want to crab cake from the city. Uh, in my opinion, you need to get out either North or South of the city to get a proper crab cake. The ones in the city aren't going to be as good and are going to cost too much.
00:29:41
Speaker
if you want the real Baltimore experience. This is for the out of town people. Maryland crabs take forever to eat. You never get full because it takes so long. And you're drinking Natty Bo's and you're getting
00:29:56
Speaker
cut from opening all these crabs and the Old Bay is going to get into your wounds. And the whole thing is just very a metal experience. But don't come expecting to eat crabs and make it to the show because, you know, it's like a four hour event, you know. So save that for your first or final day in Baltimore. Get out of the city to do that. I'm surprised there's there's like no Baltimore
00:30:27
Speaker
like food, really. So there's several meat companies in Baltimore. The classic one is Pollock Johnny's. You're gonna wanna find yourself, you're gonna wanna go find yourself a Pollock Johnny's. There's one down the ocean, actually. They serve bratwurst and stuff. My Baltimore recommendation, so there's no pit beef on here, too. That's another Baltimore thing.
00:30:56
Speaker
Basically they pretend it's barbecue, but it's not. It's just roast beef in a grilled in a pit. All right. You're gonna, for that, you're going to want to go East over to a chap's pit beef, which is in the parking lot of a strip club. Yep. Yep. That's the one. Yeah. That's you're going to want to go there.
00:31:19
Speaker
for your pit beef, Maryland food. There are other places. They're all pretty good, but Chaps is my recommendation. So Sugar Exchange has snowballs. Is that a Maryland thing? I have not heard of that. So they're snow cones. They're just called snowballs. I think it's a Maryland thing. Oh, I see what you're saying. I thought you just meant Sugar Exchange. Yeah, I mean, I actually, I think a lot of places around here call them snowballs.
00:31:49
Speaker
Yeah, and I'm sure I'm missing something. There's probably a nose game that we can hunt. So you go get to the yard, catch some O's. Okay. It used to be that Maryland Death Fest, Otacon, and an Orioles game. Oh my God. Oh my God. This is like the worst thing ever.
00:32:15
Speaker
So explain what Otacon is. Otacon was slash is the biggest anime convention. Do they still have it? I think it moved. Oh, it's in DC. Yeah.
00:32:33
Speaker
But like, so that one wonderful day, you'd get metalheads, cosplayers, O's fans. And you know there's one guy who was there for everything. Just everybody walking around like, what the fuck? So good. I have another tip. If you want to avoid driving into the city, there, this might be breaking news for some people.
00:33:02
Speaker
There is a Baltimore subway. It's one line, and it goes from Owings Mills, which is a suburb west of the city, and it doesn't go all the way through the city. It ends at Johns Hopkins Hospital, okay? But there is the Shot Tower Station. If you get off there, when you come out and look up, that's Angels Rock Bar. So it's probably cheaper
00:33:32
Speaker
It's probably not safer, but it's cheaper to park in Owings Mills, ride the Baltimore subway in, and then that'll spit you out right behind where everything's happening. Also, the light rail can be used. It's a little trickier.
00:33:56
Speaker
It's slow to slow and the closest stop is going to be many blocks west of marketplace. So you'll be in for some walking. And I also don't know when either of those stop running. So if you're staying for the end of mortuary drape, you might be stuck in the city, but there's, there's an Uber and all that.
00:34:20
Speaker
And I think they got rid of all these scooters in the city. So I don't think that's an option anymore. I've seen some of them around. I might be wrong. Me too. All right. Is there anything else we should tell people coming down to Ballmer for the first time?
00:34:43
Speaker
of crabs. That's what the inner, the inner harbor sucks. Nobody goes there. It used to be good. There's, there used to be like a mall car called harbor place that is like on the harbor, but it's been abandoned. They're going to rip it down. It's yeah, it's not going to be there. If you want to spend lots of money, you can go to the aquarium or the
00:35:12
Speaker
Maryland client center. The aquarium is cool. Yeah, but those are like very, both of those are family friendly. So, you know, wear an appropriate shirt or not. I don't know. And they'll try to sell you a membership. That's probably not worth it.
00:35:35
