Speaker: You know, I want to, we finished this book and we did.
Speaker: We're talking about Nope.
Speaker: We're talking about fun stuff before the show.
Speaker: That's true.
Speaker: It's, it's nice when we begin the show talking about things that we like, because that doesn't always happen.
Speaker: It doesn't always happen.
Speaker: It doesn't always happen.
Speaker: It always happen.
Speaker: Well, Kevin, what do you say?
Speaker: We put this body in the ding dang marsh.
Speaker: Let's put the body in the marsh.
Speaker: Look at this.
Speaker: I'm drinking a Spindrift.
Speaker: Lovely.
Speaker: Sparkling water and real squeezed fruit.
Speaker: Is that a lemon?
Speaker: It's a classic.
Speaker: I'm having a little bit of a couple fingers of Uncle Nearest in my commemorative Phil Got Married cocktail glass.
Speaker: Oh, yeah, commemorative room Phil Got Married glass.
Speaker: Look at that.
Speaker: He got married.
Speaker: Mm-hmm.
Speaker: I got married and then less than a year later had a baby.
Speaker: You got it.
Speaker: That's what we did.
Speaker: You did the same thing we did.
Speaker: I forget that.
Speaker: That's right.
Speaker: You guys weren't wasting any fucking time either.
Speaker: We got married.
Speaker: Our daughter was born only a couple of weeks after our anniversary.
Speaker: There you go.
Speaker: There you go.
Speaker: That's the way to do it.
Speaker: Our kid was born a couple of months after our anniversary.
Speaker: So more than a year, not less than a year.
Speaker: You tie the knot and then you untie some.
Speaker: Other nuts.
Speaker: You secure the bag as the children secure the bag as this as the kids would say.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Body in the marsh.
Speaker: Body in the marsh.
Speaker: This ain't reality TV.
Speaker: OK.
Speaker: We are picking up at chapter 15.
Speaker: Our friends are leaving the desert area.
Speaker: As you guys recall, they are on the planet, quote unquote, the planet trademark.
Speaker: And it's got four levels in it, if you will.
Speaker: And they've just passed through the second one, the desert filled with scorps, which are filled with goo, as I'm sure you recall.
Speaker: The scorps.
Speaker: They get real creative with these names, by the way.
Speaker: So they're making their way through.
Speaker: These are real Joe bag nicknames, you know, they really are Joe bags and they're making their way through.
Speaker: And this is the mountainous region and Alpine kind of region.
Speaker: And they have to determine, uh,
Speaker: They know that the what the nicknames of the other two are.
Speaker: They're hunters and spitters.
Speaker: And so they're trying to figure out, oh, what do we got?
Speaker: What do we got coming for us?
Speaker: We get the standard how much ammo have we got left thing, which basically if we cut back to a new zone, if you will, you can assume that they have a moment where they're like, all right, I've got one clip left and three grenades or whatever.
Speaker: I don't think they ever have three grenades.
Speaker: They should be so lucky.
Speaker: Uh, but yeah, so we've got that.
Speaker: We cut back to, uh, Rebecca, David and Claire.
Speaker: They are still working their way, uh, through, uh, uh,
Speaker: What is it even called?
Speaker: Like they're there.
Speaker: I forget what it is.
Speaker: It's like a control room or something.
Speaker: Right.
Speaker: They're trying to get to Rebecca, David and Claire are trying to get to a communications tower.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: So they're still trying to figure that out.
Speaker: Not much there.
Speaker: We're back to.
Speaker: Oh, yeah.
Speaker: So meanwhile, we go back to the mountains and what starts coming our way.
Speaker: But.
Speaker: I can only describe this as zombie goats.
Speaker: They are frog headed goats.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Which, which that's some Hieronymus boss shit right there.
Speaker: Like they are going to open their mouth and let us into hell.
Speaker: That's right.
Speaker: It's straight out of the garden of earthly delights.
Speaker: There is some really fucked up imagery right there for you.
Speaker: And they literally hawk poisonous loogies at them.
Speaker: They spit acid.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: What's the what's the latest meme?
Speaker: The Hawk Twi or whatever.
Speaker: That's what they do.
Speaker: You got to do that Hawk Twi.
Speaker: Yeah, that's it.
Speaker: Yeah, that's that's what they do.
Speaker: It's like I couldn't stop thinking about like because it's a terrifying image.
Speaker: You know, it's these horrible goat things.
Speaker: They're like climbing down these tall mountains.
Speaker: froggy reptilian heads and they literally described them going like and just just just pulling it up like uh like ace ventura uh two call the wild i am looking up that you got to give me that hawk to a spit on that thing
Speaker: Spit on that thing.
Speaker: That's it.
Speaker: That's it.
Speaker: I found out about that one from one of my redneck friends on Facebook who said she was going to do that to her husband.
Speaker: And I was like, I'm I'm happy.
Speaker: That is why you're still on Facebook.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Your teenage kids who are also on Facebook probably don't want to read that.
Speaker: So skip, I suppose.
Speaker: Hawk or Tua.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Hawk Tua.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: So they're basically making their way past these guys.
Speaker: John is going to distract them while Leon and Cole make their way to the exit.
Speaker: And John gets this kind of internal monologue thing going here where he starts to feel really responsible for Cole's life because he like helped us out.
Speaker: I become a puppy.
Speaker: Yes, that's exactly what it is.
Speaker: It was the dog that you fed one too many times.
Speaker: And and it's just it's, you know, you've gotten attached to it.
Speaker: Now we have to let it inside the fucking house.
Speaker: So he's dealing with that.
Speaker: Cole's very appreciative, as you can tell, because he's not dead yet.
Speaker: And yeah.
Speaker: So John basically distracts the hawk to a goats while while Leon and and Cole make their way across a bridge.
Speaker: And John's making his way, too.
Speaker: And oops, the bridge lets loose.
Speaker: The bridge lets loose like they spit on that thing.
Speaker: They spat on that thing.
Speaker: And it just fell.
Speaker: It just fell.
Speaker: And it just fell.
Speaker: That's it.
Speaker: So we cut to chapter 16.
Speaker: John is dealing with this.
Speaker: He gets a hocked.
Speaker: a red mucusy ball hits him, I think on his hand or something like that.
Speaker: And it's, it's just, it's tingly horribleness.
Speaker: It's, it's pretty gnarly.
Speaker: It is pretty.
Speaker: It's not great.
Speaker: No, it's bubbling.
Speaker: It's, it's, it's seem steaming.
Speaker: It's, it's two.
Speaker: It's two.
Speaker: It's two.
Speaker: It's two.
Speaker: It's two.
Speaker: It's two.
Speaker: It's two.
Speaker: It's two.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: It's the new shake and bake.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: So he's he's hand over handing it up the bridge.
Speaker: They pull him over and and they they throw a grenade across and just take them all out.
Speaker: Grenades are the MVP of this book.
Speaker: Let's yeah, it seemed a little too easy to kill all of them at once.
Speaker: Yeah, I actually thought that we were going to have that this was going to be.
Speaker: It's kind of like what they did with the Scorps, where he blew up all the Scorps and then they were like, oh, but I can hear some more coming.
Speaker: Let's book it.
Speaker: It's kind of it's it's not even that much.
Speaker: I was expecting.
Speaker: some sort of twist, but no, they, they blow them up, which you know what?
Speaker: Fine.
Speaker: We've got, you know, 60 pages left in this book.
Speaker: Let's not, let's not count our blessings here.
Speaker: Uh, just yet.
Speaker: Um, so we get, uh, this wonderful line.
Speaker: Uh, they, they ask how he is.
Speaker: And John says, I, I, I think I broke a nail, but I'll live.
Speaker: Uh, just, uh, well met.
Speaker: Good sir.
Speaker: Well met.
Speaker: This tool of wits is over.
Speaker: Uh,
Speaker: We cut to Reston, who's watching this, like the world's worst Game of Thrones season seven party.
Speaker: And he's a little drunk at this point.
Speaker: Yes.
Speaker: I think the best thing that S.D.
Speaker: Perry does in this book is we actually watch chapter for chapter as he gets drunker and drunker.
Speaker: She never forgets that he's been drinking brandy and he's always having another glass and she always adds a little more, which is exactly...
Speaker: how it works when you're slowly getting drunk over the course of the evening.
Speaker: He has been getting drunk all night.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: And before you know it, you're just shit faced and you're like, how did this happen?
Speaker: And oops, I'm dead.
Speaker: But we'll get to that in a second.
Speaker: But yeah,
Speaker: He is slowly getting more and more.
Speaker: Well, not even slowly at this point.
Speaker: He is very steadily getting hammered.
Speaker: He is at this point trying to make excuses.
Speaker: He's trying to come up with the excuses.
Speaker: He's going to tell the group should he have to pull the plug or or even because at this point, even if they get killed in the last room,
Speaker: These guys have still decimated millions of dollars of worth of biotechnology and bioweapons and shit like that.
Speaker: So he's pretty screwed with his bosses no matter what.
Speaker: So he's trying to come up with some excuses and see what he can do.
Speaker: And then as he's thinking about this, he he gets a phone call.
Speaker: He picks up, but the line is dead and he starts looking around all the security cameras dead.
Speaker: So he is excuse me.
Speaker: He is fully alone out there.
Speaker: We cut to a new character.
Speaker: Isn't that exciting?
Speaker: New character.
Speaker: Andrew Killer Bourbon, who is a new character, a brand new character working for stars.
Speaker: They have sent him to go umbrella.
Speaker: Sorry.
Speaker: Yeah, umbrella.
Speaker: Uh, he is, uh, sent to, uh, guard the van that they found.
Speaker: Uh, and he's got to keep an eye on it.
Speaker: He's bitching about it.
Speaker: Pissed off, really not thrilled about being there.
Speaker: Um, and, uh, what do you know?
Speaker: Uh, a beautiful young lady comes around the corner and says, Oh, I don't feel so good.
Speaker: And he says something like,
Speaker: Oh, maybe I can help her out and get on her good side.
Speaker: And then he says, and she's stacked too.
Speaker: Which, yeah, that one was like, the writing is accurate, but a little too accurate.
Speaker: That's absolutely accurate.
Speaker: But also, isn't it Rebecca?
Speaker: Yeah, who is distinctly not stacked.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Rebecca is relatively petite, so it's a weird comment.
Speaker: It's a weird comment.
Speaker: He's just he's just been out in Utah for a long time.
Speaker: Long time.
Speaker: He can't even get a piece of hand at that point.
Speaker: So he is he is he is pertinent.
Speaker: uh, for a squirt.
Speaker: And so what do you know?
Speaker: Uh, just as he lets his guard down because he's an idiot and he gets clobbered, uh, by Claire and David who basically say, you know, up against the wall, motherfucker, don't make me kill you.
Speaker: And, uh, and, and, and that's, that's the end of that chapter.
Speaker: They say that the other two guys that were left over fell for it as well.
Speaker: The exact same exact same move, which is the exact same move three times to these stars to these umbrella dudes.
Speaker: And it worked every time.
Speaker: So, yeah, you know, if it works once, why not try it again?
Speaker: Why not?
Speaker: I think it's a bunch of horny dudes out in the middle of the desert.
Speaker: I'm sure it worked.
Speaker: I mean, like if you told me that was in real life, I'd say, yeah, sure.
Speaker: I believe that.
Speaker: I believe it.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: I totally.
Speaker: And then Claire stands up on a table and says, if one of you motherfuckers moves, I'll execute every last motherfucking one of you.
Speaker: That's it.
Speaker: That's it.
Speaker: That's you know what?
Speaker: Now in headcanon, that's that's how I imagine.
Speaker: You knew that diner was knocked down.
Speaker: Oh, that's a shame.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: There's a Pep Boys there now.
Speaker: I assume that was in L.A.
Speaker: Yeah, because we were watching.
Speaker: It was.
Speaker: It was the Hawthorne Grill.
Speaker: We're watching The Nice Guys the other night.
Speaker: You ever see that?
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Really hilarious movie.
Speaker: Shane Black starring Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe.
Speaker: If you.
Speaker: go watch it if you haven't uh folks really good did not make much at the box office but it deserves a sequel anyway uh set in the 1970s there's a scene where they're in a diner and i was like it looks pretty similar to the one from pulp fiction that set me on a rabbit hole and was like oh it was it was demolished and there stands now a pep boys
Speaker: Good.
Speaker: That's I mean, I bet that neighborhood you needed that pep boys needed that pep boys.
Speaker: Look, you did a little pep in the step, you know, pieces, pieces of cinema history aside, people need to get their oil changed.
Speaker: They do need to get their oil changed.
Speaker: Let me tell you, people just do not get their oil changed.
Speaker: They don't.
Speaker: That's not a thing.
Speaker: I don't think people do that.
Speaker: Speaking of which, I think I'm four months overdue for an oil change.
Speaker: I think I'm four years.
Speaker: So no, no.
Speaker: I do mind what I have a special occasion.
Speaker: Like when we moved here, I was like, well, it best better get that.
Speaker: Better get that oil changed.
Speaker: Oh, yeah.
Speaker: Do you have state inspections in Virginia?
Speaker: No.
Speaker: Well, actually, they do, but they are so lax as to be completely.
Speaker: useless.
Speaker: And they also allow up to three years of a state inspection.
Speaker: Like like when I first moved here, I noticed that the decal on people's cars instead of saying that year or the following year, which is what I'm used to, would say like 2027 or 2026 or something.
Speaker: I'm like, what the fuck?
Speaker: And then when I started doing the research for my place, it's like, yeah, you can you can pay a little extra and have your car.
Speaker: Well, that's registration.
Speaker: Sorry, not.
Speaker: Oh, gotcha.
Speaker: After the inspection, you can have your car registered for like three years or something.
Speaker: And you don't need to get it re-inspected.
Speaker: Not to my knowledge.
Speaker: You probably do.
Speaker: And I'm just unaware of it.
Speaker: Because when I lived, I mean, in Pennsylvania, it was every year, I thought.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: I remember.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: It was that when I was in Pennsylvania.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: And you had to have the sticker on the windshield with the inspection date.
Speaker: Pennsylvania might have had the most stringent rules on that shit of any state I've lived in.
Speaker: Oh, yeah.
Speaker: Pennsylvania was pretty stringent on the state inspection in terms.
Speaker: For those of you who don't know, we're talking about the state inspection of your car.
Speaker: To make sure that it is not over polluting, basically, that the car has to not.
Speaker: And this is something that Volkswagen got in trouble for a few years ago, where the systems in the car were designed to fake results.
Speaker: Wasn't that it?
Speaker: Yeah, something like that.
Speaker: Something like that.
Speaker: It was like it just made it seem much better than it was.
Speaker: Yeah, it's emissions testing.
Speaker: So if you're in a state that there's states that care about that kind of stuff and states that don't get a much like.
Speaker: Yeah, get a Volkswagen.
Speaker: Mileage may vary on that.
Speaker: I remember a guy I knew years ago was railing against them because his dad drove a car that was from the 1950s and couldn't pass inspection.
Speaker: And I was like, buddy, I don't know what to tell you.
Speaker: Don't drive a car that still takes leaded gas.
Speaker: What are we doing here?
Speaker: That's kind of an odd thing to complain about.
Speaker: Like, that's the hill you're going to die on.
Speaker: These motherfuckers are going too far.
Speaker: He also thought teachers were overpaid.
Speaker: Of course.
Speaker: Yes, there we go.
Speaker: There we go.
Speaker: Okay, so that tells you everything you need to know right off the bat.
Speaker: That's really all you need to know.
Speaker: Anyway, Lord.
Speaker: Anyway, chapter 17, we are in the fourth and final round of the boss rush.
Speaker: That is that is Leon, John and Cole's whole situation.
Speaker: Now, this is the city level.
Speaker: And the thing that is kind of distinct for this area based on what.
Speaker: they've seen before already, they point out is that when they were in the desert or when they were in the mountain or the the forest and all that stuff, it's fake.
Speaker: It's all fake, but it's so clearly fake.
Speaker: It's meant to be fake.
Speaker: And so you kind of roll with it a little easier.
Speaker: But in the city,
Speaker: It's made out of the same materials.
Speaker: It looks like a city.
Speaker: None of the buildings are taller than three stories, I think is what they say.
Speaker: And clearly there's no one there.
Speaker: It's like a ghost town.
Speaker: But it does kind of look like they've stepped into a city at night.
Speaker: And so it's just kind of a weird vibe that they're picking up.
Speaker: So they've got the hunters to contend with.
Speaker: They know that much.
Speaker: They don't know what that means.
Speaker: But Cole points out to them that the exit to this area is bolted shut.
Speaker: So there's no like just easy exit for them to run towards.
Speaker: So they're trying to figure out.
Speaker: whether or not they're going to be able to make it out in the traditional way this way.
Speaker: We get we get a cute moment where John basically offers Cole a job.
Speaker: If they get out of this, he's like, hey, you want to you want to join up with a ragtag group of, you know, ex-cops and federal agents and travel the world and fight zombies.
Speaker: And Cole's like, if I survive, yeah, we'll talk.
Speaker: Which I thought was a nice moment.
Speaker: Like, yeah, I could do this.
Speaker: Yeah, yeah, this seems fun.
Speaker: I'd be like, look, I don't want to, I don't think I'm going to work for Umbrella anymore, but I was thinking maybe I'd get a job at a Pep Boys.
Speaker: Maybe the one that's in LA they were talking about.
Speaker: So the place is filled with these open rooms.
Speaker: buildings.
Speaker: It's like, it's, it's kind of like a shitty video game that was just put together, uh, with paid for assets where it's like, you can go into the first floor of the building, but there's not really anything there, you know, it's just like countertops and shit.
Speaker: Uh, so it's, it's, it's not even a ghost town.
Speaker: It's, it's the ghost town that never was essentially.
Speaker: So, uh, they're making their way through it.
Speaker: And then, uh,
Speaker: They start to hear something and in a move that I can only describe as predator-like, the chameleon-like hunter comes tearing out of the wall that it was blended into with some claws and screaming at him.
Speaker: So we've got our first bit of hunter action.
Speaker: Cuts back to Reston, who was watching this.
Speaker: And he's very confident.
Speaker: He goes, all right, this is I see now that the decks and the Scorps and and the spitters were silly and stupid.
Speaker: And I see now that they never would have, you know, had a, you know, a snowball's chance in hell.
Speaker: Right.
Speaker: Of bringing these guys down.
Speaker: But the hunters.
Speaker: This is done.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: And they can't even they can't even hide, really, you know, because they everything's based on smell with these guys.
Speaker: So this is probably going to be the way that it's going to work.
Speaker: So he's watching them fight everybody.
Speaker: He has he has a moment where he actually literally leaves to go freshen up his drink because that's where he is at this point.
Speaker: He's like, I think I might go with a twist.
Speaker: Yeah, exactly.
Speaker: He's just drinking brandy like it's his job.
Speaker: By the way, the hunters are, these are the hunters from Resident Evil 1.
Speaker: Yes, yes, it is.
Speaker: You're right.
Speaker: This is the first time we get an actual recognizable baddie, essentially.
Speaker: But Leon would not have encountered that.
Speaker: He wouldn't know about it.
Speaker: He wouldn't.
Speaker: He would know.
Speaker: Nor John.
Speaker: So they wouldn't.
Speaker: Right.
Speaker: They wouldn't have known about them.
Speaker: So it's it's new to them.
Speaker: It's new to them.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Hmm.
Speaker: And we get another scene where we are watching the fight scene through Reston's eyes, through the security cameras, which I said this last episode, but I think that's a fun way of going about this.
Speaker: It's it's pushing the plot forward in a unique way.
Speaker: And I really like that.
Speaker: So he's watching the fight happen and.
Speaker: He's he's it's not going great.
Speaker: It's not going bad, though, because he actually sees, you know, them getting tossed around by these monsters a little bit.
Speaker: So he's he feels confident that this is going to be the end of it.
Speaker: Right.
Speaker: Let's see.
Speaker: Where am I?
Speaker: Okay.
Speaker: So we cut back to David, Claire and Rebecca.
Speaker: They are in the, their plan is they're, they're going into the communications building, basically.
Speaker: They're making their way in.
Speaker: Rebecca is not feeling great, but we get, we get your standard moment at this point where the wounded person says, yes, I'm walking wounded.
Speaker: Yes, I'm
Speaker: I might be a liability.
Speaker: Yes, I might not survive this, but I'll be damned if you're going to leave me behind while you risk your necks.
Speaker: And David looks her in the eye and says, you're a damn good soldier, Rebecca.
Speaker: Soldier on, Rebecca.
Speaker: Yeah, he's proud of her, goddammit.
Speaker: And I think people will say they're in love.
Speaker: It's adorable.
Speaker: They're in love.
Speaker: And then they all, the thruple squeezes together onto his elevator.
Speaker: Dude, they get on the elevator and Rebecca takes the chance to kind of just lean on David and Claire's leaning on her.
Speaker: And it's a chapel rowing song come to life.
Speaker: It's absolutely...
Speaker: It's nuts.
Speaker: It's absolutely nuts.
Speaker: That was my modern reference for the kids.
Speaker: You got to stay relevant these days.
Speaker: Got to stay relevant.
Speaker: Got to stay relevant.
Speaker: So chapter 18, we are back with Leon and John and Cole trying to make their way through.
Speaker: Well, they're making their way downtown, actually.
Speaker: Is this what's actually making my way down to sort of genuinely happening?
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: So they're trying to figure out what they're going to do with even if they get past these things, what are they going to what difference does it make if the exit is bolted shut?
Speaker: And they realize that there is a place that like a kennel kind of that place that these things come from.
Speaker: Exactly that they've been they don't just live in this level.
Speaker: They get released into it so they know where that is.
Speaker: They can make their way through that.
Speaker: And, you know, theoretically, backstage, if you will.
Speaker: So that is the the plans.
Speaker: They're making their way through it.
Speaker: We get coal who
Speaker: He is a slowly budding adrenaline junkie at this point.
Speaker: We got a moment where he's like, I feel real.
Speaker: I feel like he's- I feel, yeah.
Speaker: I feel good.
Speaker: I'm a real boy now.
Speaker: I'm a real boy.
Speaker: And you're just waiting for him to go, you got a shotgun?
Speaker: I can help that way.
Speaker: Man.
Speaker: So that section ends with them running out and trying to-
Speaker: By the way, there's a moment when What's-His-Name is watching them do their work, like fighting the monsters, where I believe Cole...
Speaker: does something where a hunter leaps at him and it says that he hits the hunter on the side of the head with the gun and then spins out of the way and then shoots it point blank.
Speaker: He pulls total Max Payne slow bullet time mode.
Speaker: He bullet times a hunter while Reston is watching.
Speaker: At some point Cole leveled up between this level and the last.
Speaker: At some point.
Speaker: And he invested in a feat or something.
Speaker: His base attack modifier went up or something because he's suddenly, he's got a touch of the badass.
Speaker: That was what he's got.
Speaker: For our D&D players, that was a rogue disengage.
Speaker: Yeah, yeah.
Speaker: And then a backstab critical attack.
Speaker: Yeah, it was pretty great.
Speaker: And rested is like watching all of this happen.
Speaker: And literally is just like, oh, I'm fucked.
Speaker: OK, that's what it is.
Speaker: I'm fucked.
Speaker: He's because he's watching them.
Speaker: One of their one of their strategies basically comes down to they run past the hunters and they're blowing out streetlights.
Speaker: And the the pop of the streetlights and the glass falling and the darkness and all that stuff distracts the hunters and that keeps them on that while they can run past them.
Speaker: So more clever shit to to avoid totally wasting all your ammo.
Speaker: Good, good Resident Evil shit.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: So they're making their way through.
Speaker: They pass by all these guys.
Speaker: They get we get some we get some combat.
Speaker: John gets smacked around a little bit, that sort of thing.
Speaker: And finally, they find their way back.
Speaker: to the opening and they are they are waiting.
Speaker: They're waiting for, you know, they they need to be able to get in.
Speaker: And it's slowly closing just like you do.
Speaker: You're running towards it and you've got the the slowly the slowly creeping doomy thing and rest and cut to rest and back there hitting the button, just just spamming the buttons.
Speaker: Close, close, close, close, close.
Speaker: He's basically the guy at your office who sees someone coming in the elevator like way down the hallway and he tries to close it.
Speaker: Exactly.
Speaker: Just hitting it as fast as he can.
Speaker: It doesn't make any difference, but it makes him makes him feel better.
Speaker: So more of Reston.
Speaker: We're doing some quick back and forths here.
Speaker: So Reston watching them.
Speaker: Finally, he gets to watch them all make their way through the kennel and into safety.
Speaker: And he is he's not happy about that, but not before our dear friend Cole gets just absolutely slashed ribbons.
Speaker: He gets he gets torn.
Speaker: His back gets torn open by a stray claw, basically.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: So in the back, in the kennel area, we get Leon and John dealing with the he's dying.
Speaker: They can tell he's dying.
Speaker: He knows he's dying.
Speaker: There's no there's you know, there's no room for, you know, niceties.
Speaker: It's like, I know I'm dying.
Speaker: Don't be an asshole.
Speaker: I know.
Speaker: I know I'm dying.
Speaker: And I swear to me and swear to me.
Speaker: So with Cole's final breath, he tells them about fossil.
Speaker: He says he just calls it fossil.
Speaker: He says it's in a tube somewhere.
Speaker: And if it got out, it would destroy everything.
Speaker: get it.
Speaker: And the guys are like, got it.
Speaker: And Cole says, good.
Speaker: And then ties.
Speaker: So yeah, that's a, that's a camera wrap on our dear friend, Cole, Cole, we hardly knew you.
Speaker: He held his own there for, for a while, but it was not bad.
Speaker: Not bad.
Speaker: Kind of a, yeah.
Speaker: Kind of a bullshit way to go out.
Speaker: It wasn't even like,
Speaker: It wasn't like it was more action movie exit rather than a horror.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Oh, yeah, definitely.
Speaker: It was definitely an action movie death.
Speaker: It wasn't it wasn't it was it was a little more sentimental, if you will.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: We're in we're in a Jurassic Park movie, basically, for all intents and purposes.
Speaker: Yes.
Speaker: Yes.
Speaker: We're we're sad, but but we've got to move on.
Speaker: We've got to move on.
Speaker: And Chris Pratt is there somewhere.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: So he's there.
Speaker: He's hanging around in the back being charming somehow.
Speaker: Somehow.
Speaker: So we cut back to Reston, who has realized that the jig is absolutely 100 percent up.
Speaker: He is sloshed.
Speaker: And he's trying to figure out what he's going to do.
Speaker: And he determines what he needs to do is run to the cafeteria where all of the people who work for him are.
Speaker: He'll have to edit the details, of course.
Speaker: But he's sure that he can count on these guys helping him out and protecting him because he is, of course, a friend to the working man.
Speaker: He's a friend to the working man.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: He understands they're going to, they're going to, they'll get it.
Speaker: They'll get it.
Speaker: They'll be on my side.
Speaker: Everything.
Speaker: They call me blue.
Speaker: Why couldn't, what that, that's got to be nice thing, right?
Speaker: Blue.
Speaker: Nicknames from your subordinates are always a good thing.
Speaker: So that's fine.
Speaker: That's fine.
Speaker: Uh,
Speaker: So cut to chapter 19.
Speaker: We've got Leon and John dealing with the loss of their mascot, Cole, because let's face it, that's what he was.
Speaker: That's what he was.
Speaker: And they're trying to figure out they're trying to find this fossil thing.
Speaker: And eventually, lucky them, they do.
Speaker: And fossil is basically he's a tyrant.
Speaker: He's a, he's a, he's a tyrant, but they describe it as like a cross between a human and a dinosaur, which is why they assume they call him fossil.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: I kind of love this because it gave me.
Speaker: It's a tyrant T-Rex.
Speaker: Kind of.
Speaker: Yes.
Speaker: Yes.
Speaker: And what was the Dino Crisis?
Speaker: It gave me full Dino Crisis vibes.
Speaker: Full on Dino Crisis vibes.
Speaker: Where's that, Renaster?
Speaker: I would play the shit out of some Dino Crisis.
Speaker: I would play the shit out of a Dino Crisis X Resident Evil crossover game.
Speaker: Absolutely.
Speaker: That would be the shit.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: So they're sitting there staring at this killing machine that's in stasis in a tube of goo.
Speaker: And we get a moment of Leon saying, so do we do it?
Speaker: And John says, yeah, yeah, I think we're going to do it.
Speaker: So they're going to give in to their basis quotients.
Speaker: They're going to let a tyrant loose.
Speaker: They're going to let a tyrant loose, which I'm sure will be fine.
Speaker: Because?
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Because.
Speaker: Because.
Speaker: Because they figure that'll.
Speaker: I'm not entirely sure.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: All you've got.
Speaker: They've killed basically everything.
Speaker: All that's left is Reston, essentially.
Speaker: And you've got a bunch of civilians.
Speaker: Like, I don't know why they're doing this.
Speaker: Why?
Speaker: There's.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: There are civilians down there.
Speaker: Why are you letting a tyrant loose?
Speaker: Yeah, you have you have a chance of having the tyrant kill Reston, I suppose.
Speaker: But you have a way worse chance of it killing you and your friends or some innocent civilians.
Speaker: So just find the corporate guy and plug him in the head.
Speaker: You don't need you don't need to awaken a T-virus beast like to do this.
Speaker: That's not necessary.
Speaker: Probably you could probably terminate the tyrant with from the same console.
Speaker: Probably, probably.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: You know what?
Speaker: That's what it is.
Speaker: This is your this is your Mass Effect slash KOTOR moment where you turn it on, you turn it off and you get, you know, light side points or dark side points based on which one you do.
Speaker: So, yeah, they just they're just.
Speaker: They make that decision.
Speaker: They go towards the dark side.
Speaker: Yeah, they get some renegade points.
Speaker: They need some dark side points because they really want force lightning.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: That's all they really want.
Speaker: Force lightning is pretty tight.
Speaker: So, yeah, that's totally worth it.
Speaker: We cut to Reston doing his very best to play the put upon.
Speaker: My God, my God.
Speaker: You know, he's painting them this picture with words that Leon and John.
Speaker: And they killed poor Cole.
Speaker: Poor Cole.
Speaker: And the working class blue collars say, what the fuck?
Speaker: What the fuck is Joe Bagg saying?
Speaker: What is he saying?
Speaker: What is he saying?
Speaker: And they don't and they don't buy it in the slightest.
Speaker: And they're just like, I'm a brother.
Speaker: He's not my brother.
Speaker: And they, they, it basically goes down like that.
Speaker: And they're just not.
Speaker: And, and it's, and he truly has this moment of like, wait a minute.
Speaker: These are my subordinates.
Speaker: I pay their, their paychecks.
Speaker: They should be worshiping me.
Speaker: Why, why, why is it going this way?
Speaker: It's like, you're the worst boss you ever had.
Speaker: And then he shit his pants.
Speaker: Just brandy shits all the way down.
Speaker: Just, just, just all the way down.
Speaker: Just stains the floors.
Speaker: Um,
Speaker: And so it's so they're all like, we're getting out of here.
Speaker: Go fuck yourself.
Speaker: And that leaves Reston basically with the option.
Speaker: Basically, the fight or flight kind of response kicks in.
Speaker: And he's like, I got to find a place to hide.
Speaker: So Reston's running off.
Speaker: Claire, David and Rebecca are making their way through the facilities now.
Speaker: Let's see.
Speaker: Is this the moment?
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: They are making their way through.
Speaker: They're finding, you know, they're looking for their teammates.
Speaker: And then wouldn't you know it?
Speaker: Our wounded Rebecca gets grabbed by the man in the blue suit.
Speaker: Good old blue.
Speaker: The man himself.
Speaker: The man himself rests.
Speaker: Joe Bag shows up and grabs, grabs her, grabs her gun and hostages her basically.
Speaker: And, uh,
Speaker: And they just drags her away.
Speaker: So things are going really good.
Speaker: If you were worried that the story of Claire and and John and Rebecca had no point, fear not.
Speaker: The point is to put them all back in danger again.
Speaker: Immediately.
Speaker: Immediately.
Speaker: Because, yeah, they let that thing loose.
Speaker: But we're leaving, right?
Speaker: Right.
Speaker: Right.
Speaker: No, no, no.
Speaker: So chapter 20, Leon and John set loose a tyrant.
Speaker: That is not something I ever expected to see a hero do in a Resident Evil book game or any piece of media.
Speaker: They did it.
Speaker: Set the tyrant out.
Speaker: It's out in the world now.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: And and Leon literally releases it while thinking to himself, take it all down.
Speaker: So basically, he wants to release this thing to to help bring umbrellas, destroy the entire the entire thing.
Speaker: Sure.
Speaker: OK, fine.
Speaker: So.
Speaker: David and Claire are following Reston and Rebecca making their way through.
Speaker: It's it's it's we're good.
Speaker: Again, we're getting lots of cuts.
Speaker: We're getting back and forth, back and forth.
Speaker: Hallways.
Speaker: You can imagine it just fast moving action through the hallways as they're chasing this hostage situation down.
Speaker: Right.
Speaker: So let's see.
Speaker: This is this is where it starts to get kind of blurry here.
Speaker: OK, so John and Leon meet up with their team.
Speaker: They find Reston.
Speaker: They see Reston with the gun.
Speaker: Everybody's.
Speaker: there and this is when leon goes oh fuck we just let loose uh uh whoops yeah uh genocide in a can yeah we just let it loose and it's out there oh shit we may have made this situation worse uh i've made a huge mistake that that gif is basically leon right now it's it's that's it
Speaker: Chapter 21 opens with one of the more interesting.
Speaker: Chapter 21 is really short, and it's one of the more interesting chapters in the book.
Speaker: It is all from fossils point of view.
Speaker: Right.
Speaker: Which I don't think has happened in these books yet.
Speaker: No.
Speaker: No.
Speaker: And it's like the fossil just views everything as food.
Speaker: Yes.
Speaker: Food or an obstacle to food.
Speaker: Right.
Speaker: And it has no purpose other than to eat.
Speaker: It has no reproductive system, nothing like it's the only thing of its kind.
Speaker: So it doesn't worry about that.
Speaker: So basically, we just get a glimpse inside this eating machine's head.
Speaker: Right.
Speaker: And it's just looking for food.
Speaker: So we get we get we get a look at what we're dealing with here.
Speaker: And it ain't great.
Speaker: It ain't great.
Speaker: Not great.
Speaker: No, no.
Speaker: I thought this was probably one of the more interesting aspects of the book.
Speaker: Yeah, I really like this.
Speaker: It's so rare.
Speaker: It's rare in any piece of zombie media or literature that you get something from the point of view of the zombie.
Speaker: And I get why I understand it's mindless.
Speaker: That's the whole point.
Speaker: Right.
Speaker: But this is this is it's fascinating.
Speaker: It's a really interesting choice.
Speaker: I could think is some there is some stuff in the troop by Nick Cutter.
Speaker: And that's still like that book.
Speaker: Yeah, there's still some obvious some sentience to the people as they're they're going through the shit.
Speaker: But yeah, yeah, I would say that that might be one of the closest to it that I can recall.
Speaker: Yeah, that's about the extent.
Speaker: And so it's a very cool choice.
Speaker: So we get a quick chapter from the Beast's point of view, which I got a real kick out of.
Speaker: We cut to chapter 22, where Reston is dragging Rebecca along, threatening her, basically.
Speaker: He gets cornered by... He calls him John in red.
Speaker: He calls Leon red.
Speaker: He calls Leon red.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: He says Leon has red hair.
Speaker: Okay, that's...
Speaker: confusing.
Speaker: That's based on the original.
Speaker: So in RE2, in the original Resident Evil 2, Leon has red hair.
Speaker: I guess he does.
Speaker: It's yeah, it's not ginger, but he's in moving forward from Resident Evil 4, like the original Resident Evil 4 and onward, he has brown hair.
Speaker: Yes.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Kind of sandy brown for that matter.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Okay.
Speaker: So
Speaker: Basically, you know, he's cornered.
Speaker: He's, you know, and just it's more running, basically.
Speaker: He's just running from them and throws Rebecca down.
Speaker: And this isn't worth it and keeps going.
Speaker: So the gang's all back together again.
Speaker: And John and Leon are like, hey, listen, we got to go.
Speaker: Fuck this rest in guy.
Speaker: Listen, we made a mistake.
Speaker: Let's go.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: We made a tactical error.
Speaker: And yeah, we got to get the fuck out of there.
Speaker: So as they're explaining that, you get the crashing and the booming and the Jell-O pudding and the monster shows up.
Speaker: So-
Speaker: Chapter 23.
Speaker: Bill Cosby shows up.
Speaker: Shows up.
Speaker: The scariest thing of all.
Speaker: The scariest thing of all, Bill Cosby shows up.
Speaker: You can't tell me if you were in an underground science lair and the door was kicked down by Bill Cosby, you wouldn't shit your pants.
Speaker: God.
Speaker: Who wants a glass of wine?
Speaker: You know, something like that.
Speaker: And it's...
Speaker: The Rudy Theo.
Speaker: I think it was the onion that we have during the court hearings when those first started, the onion wrote the headline.
Speaker: It was like, Bill Cosby, sure, we can all figure this out if you just enjoy a glass of wine with him or something like that.
Speaker: Oh, God.
Speaker: I don't think I've ever fully wrapped my head around that.
Speaker: Just as a side note, like totally acceptable.
Speaker: I try.
Speaker: Yeah, I try.
Speaker: Don't get me wrong.
Speaker: But it's there's a lot of price.
Speaker: I think one of these days my brain will have fully processed what the fuck happened.
Speaker: Yeah, I get it.
Speaker: I totally get it.
Speaker: It's it's it's absolute insanity.
Speaker: And it's such a huge part.
Speaker: It's just it's like it's like the that that rumor of Mr. Rogers being a sniper in Vietnam comes.
Speaker: Sure.
Speaker: You know, it's it's weird.
Speaker: Right.
Speaker: Which was ridiculous because he was on during Vietnam.
Speaker: Well, yes, absolutely.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Like like a lot of things, these these timelines are usually thought up by people who don't actually pay attention in history.
Speaker: And he has the long sleeves because he's he's got tattoos.
Speaker: He's got tattoos for all of his kills.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: All that shit.
Speaker: Yeah, no, it's kind of like the Tony's happened recently and they had a big performance from Cabaret, which is one of my favorite musicals of all time.
Speaker: I'm not so I'm iffy about the production, but I'm always happy to watch that show.
Speaker: It's an amazing and dark and wonderful and terrible show.
Speaker: And and the kids on TikTok are being exposed to this for the first time.
Speaker: And and so you've got the old heads coming out of the word work to say, no, hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on.
Speaker: That's not what this is about, you know, because it's and because, you know, there were a couple of the dancers in the opening number who were clearly transgender.
Speaker: And so a lot of people saw this and went, oh, it's a it's a show about gender expression and sexuality.
Speaker: And the old theater kids have got to come out and go.
Speaker: No, no, no.
Speaker: It's that's a detail, but that's not what this is about.
Speaker: And but the fact of the matter was, I couldn't even be mad because I was introduced to cabaret when I saw Alan Cumming performing at the Tony's the same exact number.
Speaker: And I thought I was like, oh, it's like Rocky Horror.
Speaker: And and rented the Joel Gray movie and watched it and went, oh, Jesus Christ.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: If you haven't seen the Liza Minnelli, Joel Gray cabaret film directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse.
Speaker: And it's it's basically perfect.
Speaker: Fucking watch it.
Speaker: It's so good.
Speaker: Even if you're not a musical person, just trust me on this one.
Speaker: So good.
Speaker: What were we talking about?
Speaker: Oh, right.
Speaker: What's going on?
Speaker: Bill Cosby comes through the door.
Speaker: That's right.
Speaker: Jesus.
Speaker: Chapter 23.
Speaker: Fossil busts into the room like a coked up Bill Cosby.
Speaker: Just just.
Speaker: And so we've got we've got the running.
Speaker: We've got the running.
Speaker: Everyone's running.
Speaker: The running.
Speaker: It's this.
Speaker: The next chapter or so is basically this.
Speaker: The kind of chapters where every other paragraph starts with someone shouting, go, go, go.
Speaker: That's what you're dealing with here.
Speaker: Dive.
Speaker: Jump.
Speaker: Yeah, that's pretty much it.
Speaker: We get we get a lot of dodging, you know, some grenade throwing, basically anything that they can do to to get through it.
Speaker: David gets hurt pretty bad, gets some shrapnel in his back.
Speaker: But he's literally she literally writes.
Speaker: He decides that it's not that bad.
Speaker: So he keeps going.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: And they finally find a room that has like a sliding metal door that they can get into.
Speaker: And, you know, it's, you know, boom, just closes them off.
Speaker: And there's another door in it, but it is unfortunately locked.
Speaker: And as they're watching, Fossil is making short work of the metal door that got them in in the first place.
Speaker: So momentarily, they're going to be cornered.
Speaker: So.
Speaker: While they're figuring that out, Reston is making his way out, trying to figure out what the fuck he's going to do.
Speaker: He does everything but complain about those damn kids, those meddling kids, basically meddling kids.
Speaker: That's what he does.
Speaker: And he is he is clearly sloshed.
Speaker: He is he is drunkenly trying to make his way out.
Speaker: He finds.
Speaker: The this is interesting.
Speaker: If I if I read this correctly, basically there was a hole in one of the walls and he can literally see the elevator through it.
Speaker: And so he's like, awesome.
Speaker: I'm just going to cut through that and then I can ride the elevators up and I'm home free.
Speaker: So he does that.
Speaker: He gets through the hole, gets to the elevator and is just and is just like super pumped and feeling very clever, feeling very satisfied with himself.
Speaker: Now, as he's doing that fossil, we get another fossil inner monologue thing.
Speaker: Fossil smells food down the way and it's food that's out in the open, unprotected, maybe getting onto an elevator.
Speaker: And this will be worth eating first.
Speaker: And I'll come back to these guys after I'm done with this guy.
Speaker: So he he he runs off.
Speaker: And as he does that, uh, uh, uh,
Speaker: They they get out the same way.
Speaker: I have to imagine in the video game, it would be like a timing thing.
Speaker: You'd be like, you want to wait for him to leave and you'd have to time it down to the right amount of distance so he doesn't just turn back around and come and chomp you.
Speaker: Right.
Speaker: So they're there.
Speaker: They get around.
Speaker: They they're running out.
Speaker: And as they do, they hear Reston off in the distance screaming.
Speaker: And and it's suddenly cut off by a loud crunch.
Speaker: So assuming we don't get some kind of, you know, sequel where they bring him back alien resurrection style.
Speaker: That's a picture wrap on Reston.
Speaker: Reston, piss.
Speaker: Reston, you were.
Speaker: Reston, piss.
Speaker: But at the same time.
Speaker: Loved him.
Speaker: Great.
Speaker: Great.
Speaker: Really, really hilarious.
Speaker: Bad guy.
Speaker: Loved it.
Speaker: Loved it.
Speaker: We cut to chapter 24, which is very short.
Speaker: It is Rebecca.
Speaker: They're finally there.
Speaker: They're on their way out to safety.
Speaker: Rebecca is finally allowing herself to rest.
Speaker: And she basically we find out that she has managed to snag Reston's little black book, which is got just filled with all kinds of incriminating tidbits.
Speaker: And they are going to it's going to help them.
Speaker: Bring Umbrella down and she resolves to let them know whenever they're out.
Speaker: So they've got a little something to celebrate.
Speaker: Then we cut to an epilogue where Trent, our dear friend Trent, we find out has basically been watching the watching.
Speaker: It's like a play within a play.
Speaker: He's got these, how do they put it?
Speaker: It's like he has tapped into the cameras within the facility.
Speaker: So he's been watching rest and watch.
Speaker: Everything.
Speaker: So he's just watching.
Speaker: He's been just following the whole thing.
Speaker: He's very pleased with how everything went.
Speaker: He starts thinking about this as we, you know, it's right around the corner.
Speaker: We're going to bring umbrella down.
Speaker: Hope those kids take a nice couple of days off before their next wacky adventure and resolves that he's going to, he's good.
Speaker: They're going to get rewarded after this is all said and done.
Speaker: And then.
Speaker: In a very strange bit of inner monologue, he begins to recite a speech that he's been planning for years, apparently.
Speaker: And it's this speech that he's giving to the board, telling them, basically telling them, you know, your days are numbered.
Speaker: This is all over.
Speaker: So we find out that he is the kid of the of Dr. Darius and Mrs. Darius.
Speaker: I think they're both doctors.
Speaker: That's rude.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: The people who developed the.
Speaker: It's like a mutagen that will help save people's lives, that will help to enhance healing and that sort of thing.
Speaker: Eventually it becomes part of the T-virus, G-virus project and all that.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: And they kill his parents when they take it from them, but they didn't realize that he is still alive.
Speaker: And has been slowly working his way up their corporate ladder.
Speaker: And this is his revenge.
Speaker: To take them down.
Speaker: So Underworld ends with the reveal on who this mysterious Trent is.
Speaker: Our, our, our conclusion for books in the making.
Speaker: Yes.
Speaker: And his, his middle, his name comes from his dad's middle name, which was Trenton.
Speaker: Trenton.
Speaker: That's right.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: So that is Resident Evil Underworld.
Speaker: Kevin, what'd you think?
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: It was fun.
Speaker: I mean, I didn't I thought the ending was kind of a mess only because it seems completely out of character that like, why would they wake up a tyrant?
Speaker: I didn't get that either.
Speaker: That was a weird choice.
Speaker: Yeah, it was it feels like it was a choice just made to to.
Speaker: Start some shit at the end.
Speaker: Just to speed the ending along.
Speaker: Yeah, that's it.
Speaker: That's it.
Speaker: And it's not a mistake, but you see S.D.
Speaker: Perry make very frequently with these kinds of things.
Speaker: She's usually right.
Speaker: To me, it would have been like.
Speaker: okay, Reston is like, I have one option left.
Speaker: And he goes and he wakes up the tyrant.
Speaker: Now that would have made sense if Reston had done that.
Speaker: Like, like that makes way more sense.
Speaker: But John and Leon doing it doesn't really make sense.
Speaker: Yeah, I didn't, I didn't care for that, but otherwise.
Speaker: And Claire and Rebecca were, and David were a little underused.
Speaker: Underused.
Speaker: In terms of what they were doing in the plot that,
Speaker: Basically, it's all set up for Claire to be Rebecca to be taken hostage briefly.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: I don't know.
Speaker: And again, we didn't really do a whole lot when they get down there.
Speaker: No, no, they don't.
Speaker: Their parts were a little bit of a meh to me as well.
Speaker: Otherwise, it was fun.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah, it was fun.
Speaker: Reston was a great villain, had a lot of great villain.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: And I assume this is supposed to be him on the cover.
Speaker: I'm assuming that too.
Speaker: With like all the all the monitors or something like that.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: That's that's definitely him.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: I think, you know, it's kind of a classic 90s, 80s villain.
Speaker: The one who we did that a lot more in the 80s and 90s where the villain was a piece of shit, but he wasn't necessarily competent.
Speaker: You know, he didn't need to be an ultra genius or something like that.
Speaker: Like we have with villains now.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: He got lucky and he was just competent enough to make a mess.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: And I think that this is kind of a loving recreation of that sort of bad guy.
Speaker: So I really enjoyed it.
Speaker: And I appreciate the fact that he gets drunk throughout the course of the story.
Speaker: It's so fucking funny.
Speaker: It's so funny.
Speaker: I love a good villain who's just like, I'm because almost every Resident Evil villain is this.
Speaker: They're like egotistical, but also hyper-competent.
Speaker: Absolutely.
Speaker: And also somewhat straight-laced in terms of like they keep an even keel.
Speaker: And maybe they'll be prone to like Skeletor rages or what have you.
Speaker: But they're ultra-competent.
Speaker: They know what they're doing.
Speaker: And they would never get drunk during the course of the game.
Speaker: Never.
Speaker: And I appreciate that here.
Speaker: In fact, there'd probably be some like backstory of like...
Speaker: they developed some sort of thing where they can't get drunk now.
Speaker: They cannot get drunk now.
Speaker: They're infected with the thing and the thing drinks all the drink.
Speaker: Yeah, yeah.
Speaker: It's nice to see a bad guy in this franchise who is kind of human and just an arrogant asshole piece of shit like King John and Robin Hood.
Speaker: Just an arrogant middle manager.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah, exactly.
Speaker: Love it.
Speaker: Well, that was fun.
Speaker: And that means that we are now into our fourth year of Pixel It.
Speaker: Fourth year.
Speaker: Fourth year.
Speaker: We are beginning our fourth year with this one.
Speaker: Holy goddamn shit.
Speaker: Well, and in celebration of that, Kevin, I only have one question left for you.
Speaker: Oh, yeah.
Speaker: What's that?
Speaker: What are you playing?
Speaker: Oh, hey now.
Speaker: All right.
Speaker: What am I playing?
Speaker: I don't even know what I'm playing.
Speaker: I have no idea.
Speaker: I have no idea.
Speaker: I am playing Fallen Aces.
Speaker: which is an first-person M-Sim published by New Blood.
Speaker: Sorry.
Speaker: My speaker went crazy.
Speaker: Something that pulled up.
Speaker: Yeah, never mind.
Speaker: Don't worry about it.
Speaker: Never mind.
Speaker: Don't worry about it.
Speaker: Don't worry about it.
Speaker: Fallen Aces, an M-Sim published by New Blood.
Speaker: And the aesthetic is very much in line if Archer met
Speaker: like a 3D shooter from the early mid 90s where all the character models are just like flat 2D drawings and sprites or whatever.
Speaker: But the art style is reminiscent of Archer and the Archer art style is reminiscent of very specific earlier art styles from that time period.
Speaker: But Fallen Aces is, it's a blast so far.
Speaker: It is hard as balls, I'm finding.
Speaker: I might have to turn down the difficulty because most of the time you are unarmed.
Speaker: You finding a gun is a rare joy where you can, if you find a gun, you'll be able to take out like six goons really quick and then you got to find more ammo and you're probably not going to find it.
Speaker: You're probably not.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: So I've been finding that like,
Speaker: just like avoiding combat, being stealthy, doing what I can to to mess with the environment, all sorts of things.
Speaker: That's kind of the way Fallen Aces begs to be played because you can be played like that.
Speaker: Like you can lead a bunch of dudes into a room where there's wires on the floor and throw a switch and electrocute all of them if you want to.
Speaker: So that's a it's it's a blast.
Speaker: And right now it's in early access.
Speaker: I could see them making some tweaks and changes as they go.
Speaker: The first chapter, the first chapter of three is available or the first act of three is available.
Speaker: I can't remember what it is.
Speaker: And each one is going to be a bunch of episodes within the chapter.
Speaker: I'm on the third level right now, I believe.
Speaker: And it's a tricky one.
Speaker: One of the cool things, though, is you get these gadgets.
Speaker: And I only have the second gadget so far.
Speaker: So the first gadget you get is your lighter, which just lets you walk around in dark spaces and allows you to see.
Speaker: The second gadget is this communicator that lets you talk to this 1930s style superhero named Nightwave.
Speaker: And what you can do with Nightwave is he will just be somewhere with a sniper rifle and you can point to a guy
Speaker: in this, in like an open area and you can just radio Nightwave saying, take that guy out.
Speaker: And then if he can, sometimes his view is blocked, but if he can, he'll just pause for a second and say, taking the shot.
Speaker: And then you'll just watch and you'll just hear this bullet go.
Speaker: And the goon just get obliterated by a sniper rifle shot, like off in the distance.
Speaker: I love it.
Speaker: I love it.
Speaker: So I'm having a lot of fun with it so far.
Speaker: So Fallen Aces, I'm not playing much else at the moment.
Speaker: Still playing Scald or Scowled or however you say it.
Speaker: I think it's Scald.
Speaker: And I have, okay, yeah.
Speaker: I have a few games that I'm looking forward to playing soon, like Shadow of the Archery, which is the DLC for Elden Ring.
Speaker: Nice.
Speaker: Which, given its meatiness, might actually be in the game of the year contention if it is everything that what people have said it is, because it's a DLC on its own that's 40 to 60 hours.
Speaker: I mean, that's I don't I think to quibble about whether or not that's that I'd say that that's qualified or it's wise.
Speaker: It's more hours than you're going to put into the vast majority of the full release games that come out this year.
Speaker: So yeah, I finally pulled the trigger and got another crab's treasure.
Speaker: So looking for that, I'm going to be looking forward to hearing what you have to say about that one.
Speaker: And also
Speaker: I'm going to be playing one soon on my list is Still Wakes the Deep.
Speaker: I've got that on my list.
Speaker: That looks fascinating.
Speaker: And I love that team.
Speaker: They're Chinese room.
Speaker: That's right.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: So fun.
Speaker: I'm looking forward to playing that.
Speaker: I was watching
Speaker: the Dead Meat podcast folks playing it for a few minutes.
Speaker: And then I had, I was like, I have to turn off the stream.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Because as like, they started as like, nope, I got to turn this off.
Speaker: I know I'm going to play it and I'm trying to avoid, yeah.
Speaker: because they they do stories so well.
Speaker: You know, they do such a good job with that shit.
Speaker: And I just want to experience it, you know, fully unburdened, if you will.
Speaker: So, no, I'm with you on that 100 percent.
Speaker: Yeah, they've got there's a prologue game for free that they released.
Speaker: Oh, nice for it.
Speaker: That's like an Atari style kind of thing.
Speaker: Apparently that eventually turns into kind of an analog analog horror type stuff.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: And it's totally free.
Speaker: I might check that out just to wet my whistle a little bit.
Speaker: But the concept of Still Wakes the Deep, like you're on an oil rig, shit's haunted.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: I'm there, you know, like an oil rig.
Speaker: Exactly.
Speaker: What are you supposed to do?
Speaker: The fact that there isn't more things set on oil rigs blows my mind.
Speaker: A travesty.
Speaker: An absolute travesty.
Speaker: The fact that we haven't gotten an Aliens movie on an oil rig makes no sense to me.
Speaker: An oil rig is it can basically stand in for a haunted mansion.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: in the middle of the ocean.
Speaker: I'm going to write a horror campaign that takes place on an oil rig.
Speaker: That's just too.
Speaker: Yes.
Speaker: What what what setting what setting would you or what system would you use for that?
Speaker: I don't know.
Speaker: I don't know.
Speaker: I have to think about it.
Speaker: One of the Lovecraft or.
Speaker: I might do.
Speaker: Yeah, you could do you could do a Call of Cthulhu thing with it.
Speaker: Call of Cthulhu.
Speaker: You could do an oil rig, you know, they came from.
Speaker: We can do one of those games on there.
Speaker: Make it to horror.
Speaker: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker: Hell, you could do an alien thing on an oil rig.
Speaker: You could.
Speaker: You know, do that.
Speaker: And I've been looking for an excuse to play that one.
Speaker: So, yeah, yeah.
Speaker: Yeah, that's happening.
Speaker: That's happening.
Speaker: And it's recorded, so I'm holding myself to it.
Speaker: Hold yourself to it.
Speaker: Phil, what are you playing?
Speaker: Oh, I'm playing a lot of the same stuff.
Speaker: I've gone through a couple of chapters, A Thousand Year Door.
Speaker: I downloaded the DLC that just got released for Boltgun.
Speaker: Haven't played that yet, but I'm looking forward to that.
Speaker: Oh, right, right.
Speaker: I saw that that was out.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah, that looks fun.
Speaker: I'm looking forward to that.
Speaker: It's just going to be more of the same, which is fine by me.
Speaker: Is there any more additional lines by by what's that's a good question?
Speaker: I don't know.
Speaker: I don't know.
Speaker: But I mean, he recorded like
Speaker: So many.
Speaker: I mean, there was a thousand lines.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: If they did put them in there, I don't know if the majority of people would notice just based on the sheer number.
Speaker: So, but I have been playing.
Speaker: I also played some fallen aces.
Speaker: I'm also enjoying it.
Speaker: I...
Speaker: It's kind of funny because I love the fighting style of it because I agree with you.
Speaker: The game is hard as balls, but I didn't notice that at first because if you're kind of as chaotic of a fighting player as I am, and this game is very heavy into like improvised weapons that you find around the place, frying pans and broken bottles and shit like that.
Speaker: And I'm just picking shit up and throwing, swinging,
Speaker: And just decimating people, by the way, and doing very, very well.
Speaker: But then I got too cocky and got a head.
Speaker: Oops, I'm dead.
Speaker: Like very quickly.
Speaker: Right.
Speaker: And that's the thing.
Speaker: It's it's your health goes down really fast.
Speaker: You can't.
Speaker: Yes.
Speaker: You can't let, if you are fighting goons that just have their fists, you're going to be fine.
Speaker: But as soon as you run into a pipe wielding goon, you're in trouble.
Speaker: It's all over at that point.
Speaker: It's a totally different game at that point.
Speaker: I also love the art style.
Speaker: I love the music and the gist of it.
Speaker: The whole thing is fun.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: I didn't know I needed a Dick Tracy M-Sim, but here we are.
Speaker: Right.
Speaker: I just, yeah.
Speaker: I'm enjoying it.
Speaker: I like that it basically is the same opening as a fuck.
Speaker: Disco Elysium.
Speaker: You do everything but not know who you are.
Speaker: I also this is this is an interesting one.
Speaker: I bought the Hunter Call of the Wild.
Speaker: Okay.
Speaker: This game came out last year, I want to say.
Speaker: I have been watching, it's a hunting sim.
Speaker: Sure.
Speaker: And I keep getting these guys on TikTok who are playing it.
Speaker: And it's a very in-depth hunting sim.
Speaker: And I was like, I'm kidding.
Speaker: And I was like, well, fuck me.
Speaker: OK.
Speaker: And and I downloaded it and I was like, I'm going to get to the end of the day.
Speaker: my wife sat with my son and fed him and watched me playing this game.
Speaker: And she said, I could watch you play this game for hours because it's it's gorgeous.
Speaker: First and foremost, it's a beauty.
Speaker: You're in this, you know, the level I'm in here in this park in the Pacific Northwest.
Speaker: It's just that you've got weather effects that are beautiful.
Speaker: It's it's gorgeous.
Speaker: It is just this.
Speaker: The landscape is absolutely beautiful.
Speaker: And you've got
Speaker: to track and hunt these animals.
Speaker: And it is unlike what 99% of gamers are going to play because you have got to take it slow.
Speaker: You cannot just run in and like plug the right if you have to keep track of the wind.
Speaker: If you are downwind from them and they smell you or something like that, then they will run.
Speaker: It took me about an hour to bag my first animal and it wasn't even the one I was tracking.
Speaker: I got an achievement that basically says, wow, you've been hunting the same goddamn moose for a long, long time.
Speaker: And then I just happened.
Speaker: Was the achievement called Moby Dick?
Speaker: No, it might as well have been.
Speaker: It's got, it's, oh, hold on.
Speaker: It's persistence is futile.
Speaker: That's amazing.
Speaker: Because I've just been, yeah, find 100 tracks from the same animal because that's how long it was.
Speaker: Because it's a moose I was hunting and I've got, and you start out with a little fucking pea shooter.
Speaker: So it's not, you're not going to just be able to plug that thing right away.
Speaker: And I just happened upon this group of deer and I shot one of them and that was way easier as it turns out.
Speaker: And I got my first trophy and you can level up and you can unlock different places and things and, and, uh,
Speaker: lures and all that stuff.
Speaker: It's very immersive, very realistic.
Speaker: And again, it's kind of like it's like it's kind of like a Euro Truck simulator kind of thing where it's like if you if you come at this game with the right attitude, you can just put on a podcast and just
Speaker: quietly sit down a trap or you can slowly stalk something.
Speaker: You can find areas where certain animals are more prone to go to eat or whatever and just wait.
Speaker: And while you're doing it, you're in this beautiful environment.
Speaker: I am shocked at how much I'm enjoying this.
Speaker: It is.
Speaker: So strange, but damn, am I enjoying it?
Speaker: And there's a lot of DLC for it, but none of it's exploitative either.
Speaker: It's kind of hilarious.
Speaker: It's not one of those things where it's like, yeah, you paid a dollar for the base game, but all the rest of the DLC is like three hundred dollars.
Speaker: It's like 20 bucks.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: So it's whatever.
Speaker: um yeah and you can and you can download different parks and hunt different kinds of animals and the the most recent one is the uh hunting at the sundar patan nepal hunting reserve right yes which that looks amazing um you can hunt big cats
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: And you can get DLC to get yourself a Labrador Retriever.
Speaker: You know, like, it's just, it's very immersive.
Speaker: It's beautiful.
Speaker: And frankly, it's got to be better than playing a game where I'm mowing down innocent civilians instead.
Speaker: So,
Speaker: So I am shocked at how much I'm enjoying this.
Speaker: It's a nice, relaxing game.
Speaker: It is very, very good.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: So I'm going to get it.
Speaker: And when I just can't take it anymore, that's when I will hop into the DLC for Boltgun and just have infinite ammo and lose my fucking shit.
Speaker: Sure.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: That's when for the emperor.
Speaker: Yeah, exactly.
Speaker: That's the inevitable next step.
Speaker: But that's what I'm playing.
Speaker: So that's me.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Awesome.
Speaker: Well, thank you so much, everyone, for listening, for listening the past three years and for thank you already for listening and joining with us into our fourth year.

Speaker: They're beautiful.
Speaker: They're lovely.
Speaker: Beautiful people on the Discord.
Speaker: Beautiful people.
Speaker: Everyone says so.
Speaker: Don't fight uphill, me boys.
Speaker: Don't fight uphill.
Speaker: I would pay for an entire two hours of Donald Trump recounting the Battle of Gettysburg, trying to recount the Battle of Gettysburg from memory.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: And just being allowed and being allowed to go off on tangents as he like, can I say something?
Speaker: Oh, please.
Speaker: We insist.
Speaker: We insist.
Speaker: That would be amazing.
Speaker: That would be amazing.
Speaker: I think that that would be and that would be money that I'd pay him that he would have earned.
Speaker: He would have earned that.
Speaker: It would have been the first money he ever earned in his life.
Speaker: Like, yeah, right.
Speaker: Like, like the only, the worth first worthy bit of money he ever earned.
Speaker: So yeah, good for him.
Speaker: He could feel good.
Speaker: Because at this point he owes me money.
Speaker: I think so.
Speaker: I think he does for everybody.
Speaker: I think he, I think he owes me some money.
Speaker: Um, that, that son of, did I ever tell you that I was high, almost hired to tape him, uh, before, Hey, Hey,
Speaker: Oh, right at the end.
Speaker: Right at the end.
Speaker: Hey, your hair looks nice.
Speaker: You said your hair looks nice.
Speaker: Thank you.
Speaker: Hey, kid.
Speaker: Okay.
Speaker: Bye-bye.
Speaker: Go away, kid.
Speaker: You bother me.
Speaker: Did I ever tell you that I was almost hired to tape him before he was president?
Speaker: No.
Speaker: So the... It was November of 2016.
Speaker: After he was elected in, I got...
Speaker: phone call from this producer i'd been doing some stuff with and she had asked me if i could he was going to he needed to tape something for an event that he wouldn't be able to go to because now he was going to be president and so they were just wanted to roll a video of him making some remarks so she's like
Speaker: what would you charge for you to come to Mar-a-Lago and tape him?
Speaker: And I was like, I don't think I can do that.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Gotta stick to your guns.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: So I didn't do it.
Speaker: I turned that one down.
Speaker: I don't blame you.
Speaker: That's a lot.
Speaker: Yeah.
Speaker: Anyway, go on the internet, find us, join our Discord.
Speaker: Goodbye.
Speaker: Bye.
Speaker: Bye.
