When it comes to mastering AI, there are a lot of different ways to learn about this new topic. We can watch listen to podcasts like this one, watch YouTube videos, get up to date on your LinkedIn feed, newsletters. There's so many different things because it's evolving so fast and all those are great.
00:00:15
Speaker
But sometimes I find that it's best to learn from an old tried and true format called the book. Yes, the book, even in this information age and everything's digital and AI. Now the book is still a fantastic source to learn from because it's so highly refined and condensed.
00:00:34
Speaker
So if you want to learn a lot fast, listening to an hour, like through an audio book is a lot more than learning from an hour of a podcast. And I'm saying that as a podcast or putting out a podcast you're listening to right now.
00:00:46
Speaker
Listening to an hour of an audio book is a much more concentrated amount of information because it's more refined and selected and picked through. And while there are a lot of books on the topic of AI, I have refined it down to my top three recommendations.
00:01:03
Speaker
A few more noteworthy ones that you might want to look into. Books that didn't make the list that you can just ignore and check off. And then a few that I'm looking at reading and listening to right now, as well as ones that are coming in the future.
00:01:17
Speaker
Because this is a new topic. There haven't even been a lot of books written on this topic and until the last year or so. So there's actually something worth reviewing out there. But let's dive into it. But first, before we actually dive into the reading list, I want to let you know that I actually have a reading philosophy that I'm going to share with you real quick. Otherwise, you know, skip the next minute or two.
00:01:36
Speaker
But if you're not a big reader, I do find that it's worth listening to this part because it will change the way you look at books forever. I am an audio guy. If you're listening to this podcast, and you're probably an audio person as well.
00:01:49
Speaker
And I find that the best way to consume most of this information is via audio. I know this, I will be reviewing Audible podcast, but this is not a plug for Audible at all. I do not have an affiliate link with them or anything like that.
00:02:02
Speaker
But I do find that listening to audiobooks is by far the fastest way because it's not enough just to listen to a book one time, per se. You generally want to preview a book, read a book, and then review a book.
00:02:14
Speaker
And the way I do that is by previewing lots of books. And almost all these books are books that I've previewed. One of them I will read and then review.
00:02:26
Speaker
So if I preview lots of books, maybe one in 10 will be so good that I will actually buy a hard copy of it. And then I will go back through it, not skim it, but kind of like go back to where I knew I heard some gold, find it, underline it, review what I've underlined, put it on the shelf. And then every once in a while, i'll pick it back up, look at my underlines and review it.
00:02:45
Speaker
And that's how you get the most out of reading, or at least that's the system I use. And I've heard a lot of good leaders out there usually have some kind of reading a system to get the most out of books. And that one's mine. So I thought share that with you. It doesn't have to do with AI, but it's a great way to keep on top of a lot of information.
00:03:01
Speaker
And the reason why I'm going through so many of these books is not because I'm fully like digesting and reading every word and memorizing it. No, I'm previewing lots of information.
00:03:12
Speaker
taking the bits and pieces that are helpful to me. And some of them are even just biographies and stories that are kind of easy to digest on an audiobook anyway. So without further ado, let's get into the reading list, starting with book one, I'm going to recommend i'm going to start with my top three.
00:03:27
Speaker
Book one is Co-Intelligence by Ethan Mullick. I'm going to look at my screen here. If you're following along via audio, just know I'm just going to be casually looking at my screen so you can see the author and the cover art and all that kind of stuff. I'm essentially looking at Audible website, and I'm just going to be clicking through these.
00:03:42
Speaker
So... Co-Intelligence by Ethan Mollick is a very approachable book. It's a pretty quick listen. It's not a very not a very long book. I think, look, length is 4 hours and 39 minutes if you were listening to it at 1x speed. So if you're listening to it at 2x speed like I do, that's a 2-hour listen. You can knock it out.
00:04:00
Speaker
It's nice. it's very Even though he's a Wharton like college professor, <unk>s it's a very approachable book. There's not a lot of practical takeaways other than the fact that he does a good job of painting a picture to change your mindset towards AI.
00:04:14
Speaker
I will say this is, in my opinion, this is kind of like an entry-level book, but it's a well-written book. entry-level book. It's not like a beginner dummies guide type of book. it It's very eloquent in his approach and trying to help you see the big picture shift when it comes to co-laboring, co-working, and this co-intelligence that we're all going to be a part of very soon. It's a good big picture book.
00:04:37
Speaker
if If nothing else, if AI is still kind of new to you and you're still kind of wrapping your mind around it all, please start with this book. This is the best book to start with if AI is kind of a new concept to you or you're trying to just wrap your mind around it all and you're trying to get an idea or vision for what it is and where it's going.
00:04:54
Speaker
This is the book for you. Now, with the next book I want to recommend, it's actually a paperback book. from Lian Shelton. And this is one of the most practical books I've had.
00:05:04
Speaker
It is the best overview covering all the different top main topics you would want to know. And my favorite part about this book is that it's about not just being AI driven, but being human first, hence AI human fusion.
00:05:19
Speaker
And it's one of the few books talking about it because there's a lot of hucksters out there talking about how to automate everything and make a million dollars in two months and all that kind of crap. That's not this book. This book is thoughtful. It's approachable. It's fairly practical.
00:05:32
Speaker
She did reach out to me to add a like a little... tiny contribution, that's why I had the book, but after reading it on vacation, I thought it was a great book. After reading so many different AI books, I'm like, this is one of the better books I've recommended and will probably be one of my most recommended books, especially to marketing practitioners.
00:05:50
Speaker
If you're a marketing practitioner and wanna not have to read read like 50 articles or a done a ton of newsletters or like watch 50 YouTube videos and just kinda want the down and dirty of what AI is working right now, this is your book.
00:06:04
Speaker
AI-Human Fusion is the book to read. So that's the only paperback. The rest of them are audiobooks I'm going to be looking at. The next book I'm looking at, and is probably my top recommendation is the AI-driven leader. Honestly, i first heard of Jeff Woods on the AI Explored podcast with Michael Stelzner and his interview honestly blew me away.
00:06:28
Speaker
It blew me away. was one of the most insightful podcast episodes I've ever heard from a leadership perspective when it comes to using AI to accelerate your leadership skills and your management of people.
00:06:41
Speaker
And he gives a ton of very practical examples of how to use it to do strategy, how to use it to lead your organization, how to use it to interface with your teams, shareholder not shareholders board members.
00:06:55
Speaker
He has so many practical prompting examples in there that it's this is going to be one of those rare 1 in 10 books that I go and buy a paperback of to underline everything. review and re review again.
00:07:08
Speaker
So if you're well past the beginner stage and you just want the one book, especially if you're a leader in dealing with strategic concepts and leadership and dealing with teams, AI-driven leader is for you.
00:07:21
Speaker
Again, i'm going to recommend AI Human Fusion. If you're a kind of intermediate practitioner, best book. Otherwise, if you want the advanced stuff, if you want the stuff that's going to make the biggest impact for you as a leader,
00:07:34
Speaker
AI driven leader is extremely practical. I was like, Oh my gosh, it's so practical that you're like, I got, I have to buy the book just to underline just to make sure I check some of these off the list.
00:07:45
Speaker
Because I want to try them all I want to do them all. They're all really good. So this is probably my top is probably going to be my top recommendation for all AI books right now. just found it to be that impactful of a book.
00:07:59
Speaker
So those are my top three books that I'm at in the moment. At the moment, there's a few others, though, that I'm going kind of recommend, especially if you really want to go deep. Of course, if you want to want to go deep, read all of these.
00:08:10
Speaker
Absolutely read every single one of these. All three of the books I just recommended, just buy on Audible, listen to it at time and a half. And just make it do it. Do it while you're driving, while you're working out, while you're doing whatever you're doing when you're listening to podcasts. Like start knocking out these books because all of these put together help inform you and make you a better marketer. will help you become more AI driven. We'll start to train your mind on how to think about these different topics because it's a new thing. You're going have to take in a lot of information.
00:08:38
Speaker
So these are some of the extra books I would recommend if you want to start thinking about the bigger picture of AI. And these are biographies. The next one is a new one that just came out and called Empire of ai Dreams and Nightmares, and Sam Altman's Open AI. I...
00:08:52
Speaker
i i struggle with books like these because it's done by a journalist that just feels like she has a vendetta against Sam Altman and OpenAI and the AI industry at large.
00:09:02
Speaker
So this is a very negative picture of AI. So all the people with ethical dilemmas around AI will love this book. I still think if you're even if you're an AI optimist, it's worth reading or listening to.
00:09:17
Speaker
Because she's just done the most groundwork and piecing together the stories of what's happened with Sam Altman and OpenAI. i And since they're the frontrunners in AI tech and AI software, I still thought it was insightful to kind of get a better picture of what's going on in the world when it comes to...
00:09:33
Speaker
AI, how and the reason why meta bot scaling.ai and all that kind of stuff and all that drama taking place. If you want to know the backstory of the big players operating but behind the scenes of this stuff, this is a really helpful book to kind of understand the big pieces moving around.
00:09:47
Speaker
How AI is impacting the world, how it's gotten to this point. Again, find Karen Heo is way too negative. you know it is because she's not pulling in any of the positives.
00:10:00
Speaker
That's why it's just kind of a one-sided story. That's fine. She had an angle. She had an agenda. She did it, but she still had some of the best sources to pull and build the story around open AI because they've been pretty secretive. So,
00:10:12
Speaker
This was a good book to kind of get that perspective. The next one is the big biography from Walter Isaac Isaacson on Elon Musk. And while this is, of course, about Elon Musk, the end part of it talks a lot about Elon Musk's approach to how his dealings with open AI have gone from his perspective and his ex-AI frontier that he's paving a way for now. He is a major player in the game. And again, like the other book, kind of starts to pave and a picture of the power dynamics going on with AI. And I watch Grok very closely because I know Elon's got strong arm his way into this thing. And he's got a large backing and a lot of experience in doing so.
00:10:54
Speaker
So you might love Elon. You might hate Elon. It doesn't really matter. He's a major player whether you like him or not. And it's kind of worth getting the story behind what's happening.
00:11:05
Speaker
I find that all I listen to a lot of business biographies and I find that listening to these things over and over again really helped me paint helps paint a broader picture of my mind of what's going on. So I can understand my place in making choices and how I make recommendations if I understand the larger playing field. But I'm also a nerd and I kind of go deep.
00:11:22
Speaker
Again, start with my top three recommendations. If you like those, maybe start working through some of these more heavy narratives and stories so that you can kind of build a bigger, like, I don't know, what you call that? World building map in your mind of like what's going on with this stuff.
00:11:38
Speaker
So let's talk about some books that didn't make the list. And I'll just pull through these quick quickly so you can check them off your list. If you've wondered if whether you need to buy them, don't buy them. They're just ah ah they're just not that good. Marketing with AI for Dummies. This was written prematurely. Like this book isn't that good because it went out of date really, really fast. And it's really long, includes too much information. And it kind of does what most Dummies books do.
00:12:00
Speaker
They put too much in there thinking it's going to be helpful and actually don't get to the... like just the 80 20 of what you need to know when you're a beginner that's ethan mollick's book for beginners like that's the 20 that drives the 80 this one is trying to be all in one everything but simple at the same time that's why the dummies format is kind of a hard one for me it's and it and it came out it just it came out too early so it can't it's just not really that useful a book the coming wave is a very popular ai book but it's kind of like a doom and gloom book kind of like oh my gosh everyone's gonna suffer from ai here's what we need to do about it and paints are really good like here's 10 things that we need to do as a society but i just as a marketer i'm just kind of like cool yeah the people way above me are going to be thinking about these things maybe read this one if you really care about like big picture how we should
00:12:49
Speaker
attack this as a government if you work in the government I don't so I don't really know how this is really helpful to most people but I guess he's getting the word out there so you know good for him next one is competing in the age of AI was just kind of written to wait before chat GPT but you know AI was a before thing before chat GPT so there it is wasn't that helpful all power and prediction another book about the disruptive economics of artificial intelligence just not that helpful I won't get into why it just wasn't helpful book chuck it off the list is what I'm reading now.
00:13:20
Speaker
Again, kind of along the lines of like the Empire of AI and the Elon Musk book is the story behind NVIDIA, major player in the AI space. And I'm kind of working through it slowly now. It's a long listen. It's a nine hour, 42 minute book.
00:13:34
Speaker
It's a long book. I'm slowly getting to know the story. This one's a much more technical. So luckily, I've listened to lots of Silicon Valley biography stories already. So like I understand like how the chip wars are going on back in the day. And I've listened to books about Intel and Bill Gates and others.
00:13:52
Speaker
uh all all the major players in silicon fell i feel like i've listened to books and now i'm listening to the nvidia way so this is a book again to give you background on like the power dynamics and what's going on and what's been the story leading up to this moment it's another good one for that and then up next for me that i haven't even started yet is genesis which is written by multiple people but specifically i heard about it because eric schmidt the former CEO and chairman of Google co-wrote this one. So i'm interested to hear what they have to say.
00:14:20
Speaker
haven't read it yet though. So book review coming soon, if it's good. If this has been helpful to you, I would be so appreciative if you gave this the star rating it deserves on the platform that you're listening to it. And if you're giving listening to this on YouTube, give it a thumbs up.
00:14:33
Speaker
Thank you so much for listening. And if there's any books that I haven't checked out, drop it below in the comments or DM me on LinkedIn. I'll drop a link in the description to find me on LinkedIn. But please let me know what books have you heard about that you're like, huh, I wonder what Dan would think about this.
00:14:49
Speaker
Shoot me links or just send me a copy. DM me. I'll give you my address and send me a copy of your AI book. I'd love to read it.
