Talkin2Todd: And I don't disagree with that. assessment. I do think that the program has its benefits. It's just the complaint that we had. is the people using it. that don't know how to use TSA.
Talkin2Todd: clogging up the system. I don't disagree that it definitely has its benefits, but... Yvonne thinks the benefits outweigh the headaches. so I don't know, maybe if she went to the airport a whole lot more.

Talkin2Todd: You said... During my second senior year at Northern Iowa,

Todd: I mean. I will say this. That got a laugh out of Lisa in the car and she's heard this many, many times.

Todd: I like to I like to refer. So so I attended Iowa State University for two years and then transferred to the University of Northern Iowa. I started my career at Iowa State. as a pre -aeronautical engineer.
Todd: And then before the end of the first semester, realized I was not going to be an engineer and then dabbled in some journalism and then found out how little they make. And then transferred. And then was working on was working on a double major in political science and communication while also being on the university speech team, which...
Todd: uh, Lots of competition. so By the time you transfer and change majors multiple times, at the end of four years, I did not have enough credits to graduate.
Todd: So I was going to go into my fifth year, which I just refer to now, have since then is, oh, it was my second senior year. I enjoyed my senior year so much, I had a second senior year.
Todd: at you and I. at which point I didn't learn my lesson. I had run out of eligibility for the speech team, which is weird. They have eligibility? Yeah, speech teams have eligibility, not football. whatever. But I decided I should probably also keep myself busy. So then I became the editor of the college newspaper while completing.
Todd: one degree and dropping the other one so I could degree so i could graduate with a degree in political science. So there you go. There's there's Todd's academic history across the state of Iowa.
Talkin2Todd: it's It's too bad that you didn't. you know. file something that you had injured your vocal cords and then appealed to. some judge somewhere to give you an extra year of...

Talkin2Todd: He went... Did you go pro in extemporaneous speaking and then tried to come back and they wouldn't let? No, you weren't at LSU. Sorry. Hold on.
Todd: So. Okay, hey, so fun fact. After I finished my four years of of eligibility, we were talking about what... that I was done. And then. one of my coaches said, how many, the first semester that you were at Iowa State, because I was on the speech team there. How many how many tournaments did you go to that semester?
Todd: And I'm like, I think I went to two. And they're like, I think it's three to count as a semester. So there was a plan.
Todd: There was a plan. that we discussed. that basically... I couldn't compete in any tournaments. But on one of the national circuits, there is a regional qualifier.
Todd: that can qualify you. If you do well there, you go into nationals. We discussed. Hey, Todd. What if you don't do anything all year? and just go to the just go to the regional finals.
Todd: and see what you can qualify for. And I was like, so I've got to do all of the work for the entire year, but never compete. Go to one tournament and see what happens. And my coach was like, yeah.
Todd: I'm like, you know what? I think I'm just going to edit it into paper. i can make I can make a much bigger ass of myself editing the paper than I can just doing one tournament for the year.
Todd: And I proved that correct.
Todd: I wonder if I still have a semester of eligibility. Ooh, anyway, sorry. Nevermind. Where are we?
Talkin2Todd: I had. Three different pieces of follow -up. See how quickly I can do these.

Todd: So of the top, the only country that is in the top 10 of population. and population density. Is. Bangladesh.
Talkin2Todd: is Bangladesh because the others are are itty -bitty, tiny Vatican Monaco. Liechtenstein not on the list, but I'm sure it's there somewhere.

Talkin2Todd: I'm going to say it was The. The building that's now called the Horseshoe, but at that point it was Bally's.
Talkin2Todd: And it was originally, it was the original MGM Hotel that had the fire.
Todd: Hmm. Okay.
Talkin2Todd: That was probably the worst one.
Todd: Okay. Are you aware of the Oyo Hotel? In not Vegas?
Talkin2Todd: Oh yes, yes. Yeah, run.
Todd: what what do What do you know about it?
Talkin2Todd: what i What I know is... generically about the Oyo hotels, period. Just run. Don't.
Talkin2Todd: Don't eat don't. Don't.

Talkin2Todd: Sleep on the street. Sleep in your car. If you don't have a car, if you have a car, sleep in your car. If you don't have a car, sleep on the street and take your chances.
Todd: So the Oyo Hotel in Not Vegas is right across the street from the MGM Grand. And it's right next to where they're building.
Talkin2Todd: Yes.
Todd: potentially the baseball stadium. for the Oakland, Sacramento, Los Angeles, or Oakland. Sacramento. not Las Vegas.
Todd: A's or B's or whatever they're gonna be called. On TripAdvisor. It has a 1 .5 star rating. and is ranked 240th.
Todd: Out of 260 hotels. in Las Vegas on TripAdvisor. Now.
Talkin2Todd: oof
Todd: At that point. it might be hard to get guests. So they've come up with a unique marketing. way. of trying to draw in guests.
Todd: On multiple sites, including Expedia, Booking, Hotels .com. People looking for hotels... might see the OYO Hotel with terrible ratings.
Todd: However, You might also see the palette. hotel. You may also see...
Todd: Collection. Oh. Hotel. Or... you may see uh i'm sorry i'm looking for the other one there's one other one when you see the Palette Hotel or the Collection O Hotel, you will see a picture.
Todd: Of the hotel with palette Las Vegas or collection. Oh, Las Vegas. on the building. What they're doing is...
Todd: They are posting. the the This is the Oyo Hotel. They are listing it under different brand names on multiple booking sites.
Todd: And then using AI. to take a picture of their hotel and remove the oil branding and add in palette Las Vegas or collection. Oh, Las Vegas.
Todd: or the other one that uh they own anyway people have started to uh figure out that they're doing this Specifically, As the USA Today points out.
Todd: A visitor booked a pallet hotel. The at through. I believe booking .com. showed up. The address was in the parking lot of the Oyo Hotel.
Todd: The person was confused. They have a picture. Well, it looks like the hotel. But. but this has a different name. Okay. go in and say, I'm looking for the Pallet Hotel. And the person at the front desk of the ohio hotel says, oh, yeah, yeah that's us.
Talkin2Todd: That's us.
Todd: Like, but... Bye -bye. But I booked under Palette. According to them, the front desk person said, Oh yeah, the company's just trying out some different brand names to see which one's popular.
Todd: And they said, yeah, but this one. I know this hotel this is terrible. I'm gonna cancel. This is false advertising. And the front desk person allegedly said. The cancellation fee is a whole night stay and an extra fee on top of that. So the person ended up having to stay at the Oyo Hotel after thinking that they stayed at the Pallet Hotel. Anyway, so.
Todd: They could. They could try to make their hotel better Or... Hear me out. Just lie. Just...
Talkin2Todd: which Which of these do you think is more palatable?
Todd: Just lie.

Talkin2Todd: And also... The W Las Vegas is also. Inside Mandalay Bay. They each have their own distinct check in. process and every end.
Talkin2Todd: and set of rooms. They're not they're not sliding rooms around between Mandalay Bay and the W in the Four Seasons. The W... uh was previously that tower was previously known as the hotel capital T H E lowercase H O T E L.
Talkin2Todd: or you may have heard of it as the Delano Las Vegas. It's now the W.
Todd: All right. I assumed with the hotel, it was also known as the Buckeye Hotel.

Todd: That's like going into a Starbucks and having two separate Starbucks inside the Starbucks.

Talkin2Todd: what What did you watch this week? We watched a preview. Of a documentary called Miller Night Live.
Talkin2Todd: which is a documentary. about Todd, you remember when Dennis Miller joined the broadcast booth? for Monday Night Football.
Todd: That was weird. That was... That was kind of weird. Yes.
Talkin2Todd: Yep. There is now a documentary about that experience and I am a thousand percent in on it.
Talkin2Todd: Yep. So there's that. That's the other thing that I was watching this week. How about you?
Todd: Yeah, so...
Todd: Two weeks ago, we were we were out having lunch. A restaurant. And they had big TV. My back was to the TV. lisa was looking at this and she just kept looking at just kept looking at it And then.
Todd: And I'm looking at this. And. It is like these crazy. It's like a soapbox derby. But. with adults.
Todd: in these ridiculously decorated soapbox kind of cars. So she's like, what is that? I'm like, oh. Oh yeah. that's the That's the Red Bull soapbox.
Todd: Races. whatever events. So we go we go back to the house, and i go on we go on YouTube and look at Red Bull Soapbox. And this is an event that's held a couple of times a year in different places around the world. And what I will tell you is these things are just insane.
Todd: These people decorate up the cars. Many of them are not well made. At all. they go They go down a course.
Todd: At one point, they were in they were in Salt Lake City. We watched that one. They've been in multiple in London a couple of times. they They have to go around like hay bales. Oh, theyve they love Des Moines.
Talkin2Todd: Yeah.
Todd: They've been in Des Moines more than almost any other place. which is
Talkin2Todd: Yeah.
Todd: Odd. Have you seen it in town?
Talkin2Todd: I have not. But I do know it's been here.
Todd: When they were in... so When they were in Salt Lake City they had a crowd of 50 ,000 people watching it. You can go on YouTube. you want to You don't want to watch like the full hour and a half because I think there's a lot of time in between. There's there's sort of condensed like 25 -minute ones.
Todd: This is just wild. There are people who are just they're just like they're flying through and then literally the wheels come off like just the wheels just pop off and then they just keep right on going. Nobody's hurt.
Todd: that we're aware of. It's a fun way to watch 25 minutes of like, oh, there's no way that that car is going to. Yep. Knew that. Yep. that As soon as it hits the the the jump...
Todd: there are There are cars that are almost... If you designed a car to be the opposite of... ability to handle this course. There are people who are like, Oh yeah yeah yeah. We're going to go over jumps. And so what I'm going to do is I'm going to use like wheels off of a baby stroller and then.
Todd: Like. a three foot high Strut. To put things up on top so that when the wheels collapse I just go flying Anyway, it's quite entertaining.
Talkin2Todd: I'm. I'm going to do this now so that I don't have to do it later.
Talkin2Todd: It's called Miller Night Football.

Talkin2Todd: Which makes more sense because it was Monday Night Football.
Todd: That does.
Talkin2Todd: And it's going to be on HBO Max.
Todd: Yep.
Todd: Excellent. Yeah. That's... Is it a documentary or is this a recreation?
Talkin2Todd: Oh, no, it's a documentary. They interviewed Dennis.
Todd: Okay.
Talkin2Todd: They interviewed Al Michaels. They interviewed. Yes. Bunch of people.
Todd: Did they interview the executive producer and just... Start with this. Just a quick question. What were you thinking?
Talkin2Todd: They interviewed Dana Carvey. You got to watch the trailer because the trailer is great because Dana Carvey is like. I don't know if this is going to work or not, but I'm going to watch and I'm pretty sure that's how most people were.
Todd: To be honest. The same reason you watch that is also what you watch for the soapbox, the Red Bull soapbox dirty, because you know there's going to be a wreck and people are, this is going to, you're you're waiting just to see how this thing just.
Talkin2Todd: It's...
Todd: It's not going to get across the finish line well. I just want to see what what it looks like in the process.
Talkin2Todd: oh i can I think I can go quick on what I learned this week.
Todd: Okay.
Talkin2Todd: When we were flying, I was flying home yesterday afternoon.
Talkin2Todd: I flew through Dallas and and so the Dallas to Des Moines leg. There was cloud cover in Des Moines as we were coming in.
Talkin2Todd: And I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention, but I was sitting in a non -window window seat
Todd: Love those.
Talkin2Todd: Right. And... But the person in the seat in front of me had their window up. And we broke through the clouds.
Talkin2Todd: And we're and I'm like, oh, hey, we're really close to the ground. And then I am immediately shoved back in my seat. as the pilot.
Talkin2Todd: Puts the hammer down. And we shoom right back up in the air. We had a go around. on the landing in Des Moines.
Talkin2Todd: And I'm like, huh. Okay, well... I wonder if he's going to come on and tell us What actually happened there? Because... I've had that happen before.
Talkin2Todd: But not very often. And it's never expected. Right? You've had it happen before.
Todd: True.
Talkin2Todd: Right?
Todd: Yes.
Talkin2Todd: Yeah. And like, oh, great, i'm I'm home, or I'm almost home. Great, fantastic. we're you know Oh, hey, wow, what about that? And so... uh after we got settled Even.
Talkin2Todd: up high again, and we're... coming around to to get back into the landing pattern. The pilot comes on. and lets us know that There was a plane that was taking off the tower. The tower called the go around.
Talkin2Todd: Because there was a plane that was taking off that was going to be too close. And so the tower called for the go around. So it wasn't whether. uh it was it was the the tower called for it so We're going to go through this and we'll have you on the ground here very shortly. So thanks for your patience, folks.
Talkin2Todd: We were safe. Which is great. That's mostly all I care about But I don't have that happen very often. And I'd kind of forgotten. what it feels like. But.
Talkin2Todd: I learned that again this week Todd, you're a Navy geek.
Talkin2Todd: You're a nav geek, right?
Todd: Yes.
Talkin2Todd: Does that happen to you a lot?
Todd: Yeah.
Todd: ten 10, 15 times, maybe flying. The. I will say this. I think I've shared this on the podcast. It was a while ago. Lisa and I were flying into... We were flying into London.
Todd: Shocker. And. We. uh It was a beautiful day. So sometimes you fly into London, it's just it's cloudy, it's rainy, whatever. It was a beautiful day.
Todd: And we both had window seats so that we could see London. And we we came in and then you line up. all the way out of east and then as you fly over you get this beautiful view of london you see the river you see parliament you see all of this i'm taking pictures it's just like man this is just a gorgeous day and get to see everything And right, we've we've just crossed over the fence into Heathrow. on the south runway.
Todd: And as we're getting ready, all of a sudden you can just feel the power come on and we're going back up.
Todd: And there's a few few people around us that are like, oh, I don't, ooh, whatever. i know And Lisa and I are like. Yes, we're going to get another go at this because we get to see everything.
Talkin2Todd: but
Todd: and
Todd: And if you're if you're if you're coming in on that, you you go out and you go around south, but then you come right back into the pattern and then you get to go through the exact same, like, we're going to see every, I'm going to get more pictures.
Todd: every There was a bunch of people who were a little concerned or nervous. And meanwhile, Lisa and I are like, we're going around. This is perfect. This is, yes. You know, if you want to do this one more time. Like I would just.
Talkin2Todd: We'd be okay with that.
Todd: We're. This is great. Just spin it around again. Let's go. also i'll just i'll just say this one of the app geek podcasts i listen to they talk about different things they talk about all sorts of stuff but one of the things they always talk about is Just remember.
Todd: Well, the media has... because of plane issues and stuff you'll get media like Oh. a United Flight had to do a go -around at San Francisco. Or you'll see these sort of like.
Todd: you wouldn't believe what happened And what what the podcast always remind you is. Going around is always an option. And it's always the safe thing to do. It is not a negative. It is part of the system, which says if everything isn't perfect.
Todd: Go just pull up. Go around. and get things set up again. This is why we do go arounds is because this is how you keep the thing safe. a go -around isn't a safety problem.
Todd: Not going around can be a safety problem.
Talkin2Todd: It's a good note.
Todd: Yeah.
Talkin2Todd: That's a good note.
Todd: Yeah.
Talkin2Todd: How about you? What'd you learn this week?
Todd: So last weekend, ran another half, and this is the this is the Run the Canyon, which is the 10 miles down the canyon. and then three miles flat and uh this is the fourth year in a row i've run it the first year
Talkin2Todd: Oh yeah.
Todd: just bombed right down. It was like, you wouldn't believe how fast I went. And then that was 24 hours later, sitting outside watching NFL kickoff weekend and suddenly realized I couldn't stand.
Todd: And then once I stood, I couldn't sit.
Talkin2Todd: Right.
Todd: And then that persisted for five days. The following year. I tried to do better and I did better. Again, the following year, starting at noon. Couldn't stand.
Todd: Couldn't sit. oh They lasted like a day and a half. Last year, Sore. Everything's fine. I think I got through this. So this year I'm like, ha ha. Got it.
Todd: I got it licked. Know what I'm doing. Slow down, even. Didn't try to. bomb down the thing i was like okay i'm gonna do everything i did last year Great. 24 hours later. I'm kind of sore. But I think I got by with this.
Todd: Drive from the undisclosed location. Back up to Salt Lake City. Get to our house Sunday night. What I didn't take into account was our house in the undisclosed location.
Todd: is a single it's it's It's a single story house. There is no step. There's no step in. There's no step in the house. There's no steps anywhere. the so The house here in Salt Lake City. is two stories with a basement.
Todd: And the family room is like two steps down from the kitchen. in there. Anyway. I'm like, well, yeah, my legs are sore, but thank goodness. And then it was time to go to bed. And then I couldn't get up the stairs. And then I was like, oh, i damn it. I did that. I did. Shoot.
Todd: Shoot. Thought I was okay. Didn't take into account stairs. So now I got to turn sideways and slowly make my way lisa's like are you okay i'm like yeah i'm fine she's like you don't look okay i'm like kids it's it's I'll be up there later Anyway, so, yeah.
Todd: my my My approach didn't... wasn't as successful as i thought you know what they say though uh five years five times it's the charm so maybe next year maybe next year i can i can nail this thing

Todd: Good news. according to Apple Maps, to walk from rate field to soldier field. should take you approximately an hour and 20 minutes. one way, but it's only 150 foot climb. So start early. You're going to close your rings. You're going to save a bunch of money. I will point out you do have to cross the Dan Ryan Expressway. so I think That might be a bit of an issue. But other than that.
Todd: I'm sure walking from right field. You know what? The good news is you'd save like 30 bucks. So, I mean, that's not nothing. and You know, they'll they'll pay for some gas.
Talkin2Todd: It's not nothing. It won't pay for a lot of gas.
Todd: yeah No, no. I mean, it'll pay for something, but not much. mostly what it will do is it'll cover the gas that it took you to drive. from near Soldier Field down to Raid Field to save the 30 bucks.
Todd: in parking that's going to be 30 bucks in gas But, you know. Anyway. you'll You'll have a nice stroll. i'm here to help.
