Introduction to the Solarpreneur Podcast

00:00:03
Speaker
Welcome to the Solarpreneur Podcast, where we teach you to take your solar business to the next level. My name is Taylor Armstrong.

Taylor Armstrong's Journey in Solar Sales

00:00:10
Speaker
went from $50 in my bank account and struggling for groceries to closing 150 deals in the year and cracking the code on why sales reps fail.
00:00:19
Speaker
I teach you avoid the mistakes I made and bring in the top solar dogs of the industry to let you in on the secrets of generating more leads, falling up like a pro, and closing more deals.

Defining a Solopreneur

00:00:31
Speaker
What is a solopreneur, you might ask? A solopreneur is a new breed of solopro that is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve mastery, and you are about to become one. Hey, what's going on, solopreneurs? We are back with another episode.

Developing Success Habits in Solar Sales

00:00:44
Speaker
We're going talking about the best habits you need to develop to have success and crush it in solar.
00:00:52
Speaker
So if your habits are lacking, this episode is for you. We're gonna talk about how to master your habits and and break some bad ones. So welcome to the podcast. My name is Taylor Armstrong. We're here to help you close more deals, generate more leads and referrals, and have a much better time in the solar industry. And today we're to talking about developing those habits so you can crush it even more. And hopefully this has been a part of your habit, listening to the podcast.
00:01:18
Speaker
Because I know if you do that, you're going to develop some skill sets that will serve you, that will help you. If you have not left us a review or a rating, please would invite you to do that. That's the one ask we have. And also, before we jump into the content, if you would like to join us on a future Blitz We do have the link for that down

Summer Blitzes Announcement

00:01:39
Speaker
below. We are planning some summer blitzes. If you'd like to be with the best of the best in Southern California, would love to hop on a call.
00:01:46
Speaker
And so this podcast got me thinking. We listened to a another podcast. We're going to link to this. It actually was ah referred to this podcast by my buddy John Soriano.

Podcast Recommendations

00:02:00
Speaker
He is one of our VPs over here in the um Southern California region of our office. So he we had a leadership retreat. And ah John, he referred us to this podcast. It's called The Diary of a CEO with Stephen Bartlett. Actually, never listened to this. But ah he had ah he did a podcast with the author of Atomic Habits. Hopefully, you all have read that book by now. I would say it's it's the gold standard of books about habits. So if you haven't read read that book, definitely go read it. and
00:02:33
Speaker
Classic, you need you need you need to read this book. But ah this interview, he goes into some things that I'd say weren't touched on as much in the book and then just expounds on a few other things.
00:02:46
Speaker
If you haven't read the book, you could actually listen this podcast and it'll break down. It'll essentially give you like a two-hour summary of the book. But in our leadership retreat, we're just talking about habit how habits apply to solar and how can we get our teams, how can we get our guys developing better habits and ah out there in the habit of knocking doors, out there in the habit of closing

Applying 'Atomic Habits' to Solar Sales

00:03:07
Speaker
deals. How can we get this going for our teams?
00:03:10
Speaker
and So really got me thinking and the best way and the best way to develop habits for other people and the best way to have these better habits for ourselves in solar. So we're going to go through three different ways you can sort of apply these things that are in the Atomic Habits book. And if you want to dig little deeper on this, go listen to that interview. We will link it.
00:03:33
Speaker
has a lot of good stuff in there. And i go read the book, too. But the first one, you know, I think we, especially as an office, we we were talking, we've lot of times we get out of the habit of just making solar fun, making cells fun.
00:03:51
Speaker
And what's interesting in this interview, if you listen to it, One of the first questions that the host, Stephen Bartlett, one of the first questions he asked James Clear, he says, James, is there anything that you wish you would added in the book or anything you would change about the book? And James said, I wouldn't change anything. But the one thing I would add is I would add that we need to make habits more fun because if something isn't fun, then the chance that we're going to do it goes way down. And so got me thinking, are we making solar fun?
00:04:23
Speaker
Hey, um you know, I've been been at this 10 years and a lot of times when I see guys leave, a lot of times when I see people, you know, hit that so-called burnout, it's because they're not having fun, right? And if you can have a good time in solar, if you can make it fun, if you can compete, if you can enjoy what you're doing, then it's going to be very likely that you continue it. It's going to be very likely that even when times are tough, even when maybe you're not making huge commission checks, you continue because it's fun

Making Solar Sales Enjoyable

00:04:50
Speaker
for you.
00:04:50
Speaker
And you know you're going to come out on the other side and if you just stick with it. okay One of the perfect examples of this is another buddy out here, my guy Jake Ransom. He's also been on the podcast. If you know this guy, we should link to his podcast. If you know Jake, this is someone I see. He goes out there and he just loves joking with homeowners. He loves messing with them. You know, we went knocking and Jake was introducing me as the host of the Solrepreneur podcast to like 90-year-old grandmas.
00:05:18
Speaker
right And it just was refreshing to see people actually out there having fun. So the first thing and the first point of discussion here on today's podcast is check yourself. Are you actually having fun in solar?
00:05:30
Speaker
Are you doing things out there as you're knocking doors to have fun? And if you're not, you know maybe you need to get out with... someone that will help you see that side of solar again. Get out there with a buddy on the doors and just mess with some homeowners if you need to.
00:05:44
Speaker
yeah Say some ridiculous things. Just have fun. Maybe do the thing where you enter where you compete today to put a random word in your presentation. That's, you know, you have to fit the word beans in your presentation or whatever. Do something crazy out there. Have some fun.
00:06:02
Speaker
and that could be what's missing in your solar journey. Maybe that could be why you or your reps have felt some burnout. Goes into

Reducing Friction in Habit Formation

00:06:10
Speaker
any habits. Are you making any habit you're trying to achieve fun Okay, and so the second thing is just making habits obvious. Okay, James Clear, he talks about reducing friction in any habit we're trying to develop. When we apply it to a solar, when we apply it to door knocking, I see reps all the time, they create freak friction for themselves when they don't even know where they're going to knock.
00:06:32
Speaker
Hey, so many times we get done with our correlations and we talk to reps, oh, what's your plan today? Where are you going? And they're like, oh, you know, I think I'm going to try this area. I think the second they say, I think that means they're off to a bad start.
00:06:45
Speaker
So if you don't know the night before exactly where you're planning on hitting, who you're planning on linking up with, do you have an accountability partner out out there? Exactly what time you're planning on hitting your first door.
00:06:56
Speaker
It means you've got some friction getting out there, right? and and like that goes for anything. If you're trying to go to the gym, if you wake up and say, ah I wonder what time I'm going to go to the gym today. How likely it is do you think that you're actually going to do it?
00:07:09
Speaker
So anything, any habit you're trying to form, reduce the friction, have a game plan, know exactly what you're trying to do, know exactly who you're trying to do with. And I love, you know, I've told this many times, if you've listened to Michael O'Donnell, his famous little reducing friction hack is he would pay someone to meet him at the Starbucks or wherever to go out and knock.
00:07:31
Speaker
hey And he he talks about I think he would pay like his niece or something just to go out and follow him on the doors, you know, not even working in solar, just pay someone to literally later you go follow him. So maybe that's what it takes for you.
00:07:43
Speaker
Hey, and another little game you can play with yourself. Speaking and making of making it fun, that's another thing Michael O'Donnell, I think, talks about in his book is tracking your conversations. That's right. Maybe I do the thing where you have the tally counter on your phone to track how many conversations you had. But maybe as you're developing that habit, you carry 10 rocks in your pocket. Each time you have a conversation, you move it from one side to the next.
00:08:06
Speaker
It's another thing Michael Donald talks about in his book. Maybe create a little game for yourself. Move the rocks from one side to the next. It's going to help you develop that habit of having the conversations, which we know is the core habit. the un You need to be practicing in your solar career, right? And so that's number two, making those habits obvious.

Habit Stacking Techniques

00:08:26
Speaker
And then the other third one we're going to focus on today is just the habit stacking. And again, you can dive deeper in this if you go listen to the podcast interview.
00:08:36
Speaker
But habit stacking is just things you're already doing that you stack something else on top of. Right. And so James Clear in the interview, he gives the example of, you know, those of you that drink coffee, solar, it's probably energy your drinks, right? We're all drinking the energy your drinks. You pop open your Celsius, you're headed out to the area.
00:08:54
Speaker
Maybe a habit you could stack on top of that if you've already developed a habit. of you know your coffee, energy energy drink, whatever. Maybe you stack a little meditation on top of that. ga Each time I could hear that crack of the Celsius popping open, I'm going to do a two-minute meditation. It's an example of habit stack.
00:09:11
Speaker
Here's another one that James Clare talks about. He says he has a friend or i think it was a client, someone he knew. They love going to the gym. They love drinking their protein after the gym. Super dedicated with this.
00:09:23
Speaker
But ah it was someone that had their finances not in check their finance financial situation was a mess. So this guy, every time he went to take a sip of the protein shake, he got in the habit of pulling pulling open his budgeting app and figuring out where his money was going. Another great example of habit stacking.
00:09:41
Speaker
So what are some habits you can stack in solar? hey Maybe it's the meditation before hitting your first door. Maybe it's after every install, you're asking for referrals. Great habit to stack.
00:09:53
Speaker
You know, you you should have a process you're going through as you're closing the deal is asking referrals. One of them. Another one is maybe after every appointment you sit down with or every close, you're sending a handwritten letter to them.
00:10:06
Speaker
You're sending the gift to the customer. Another example could be after every appointment that cancels, you go and knock the five closest houses on. I actually love this one. especially if you're on an appointment for your setter, setter-closer model, just going and knocking the two houses next to it and then the three houses across the street.
00:10:25
Speaker
Great habit to start to stack on top of a canceled appointment. Get in the habit, right? Get in the habit of stacking the habits. Figure out what can you do to make yourself more effective by stacking habits on top of one another.
00:10:40
Speaker
Hey, so i hope these give you some things to think about. Hope these give you a chance to analyze your own habits in solar. Are you being as effective as you can be? If not, then you need to check yourself on these things. Make solar fun again.
00:10:54
Speaker
Get in the habit of having fun and make the habits fun. Hey, number two. Reduce the friction. Make the good habits obvious. Make sure you have a plan for where you're knocking, for what you're going to do that day. Plan your weeks. And then number three, stack those habits. Stack the good habits on top of each other. It will make you that much more effective as a solar salesperson, as a solar business owner, and as a solar printer.

Self-Reflection on Personal Habits

00:11:19
Speaker
So I hope these things help today. Send this to someone on your team that you see that does not have the best habits. This goes for anything. And so much of what we do is predicated on what we're doing outside of solar. Are you sleeping in? Do you have bad habits outside of solar? Because I guarantee you, if you have some lousy habits outside of your regular work schedule, then it's going to trickle over into your day.
00:11:42
Speaker
right? So many reps I've seen in the past, it's like they're sleeping in they're not doing the little things as far as going to the gym, they're not doing the other habits that makes make people successful. And they wonder why they're not having success in solar. So I hope this gives you a chance to think about that to do some self reflection and analysis.
00:12:00
Speaker
And promise you it's going to help your solar career tremendously. Hey, so thanks for tuning in the episode today. i hope this helps. And I hope you have the habit of continuing listening to the podcast every Tuesday and Friday. Please let us know your guest suggestions. We got some excited exciting content coming up soon.
00:12:18
Speaker
so we'll you see you on the next episode. Keep crashing on this week. Go get some deals. peace So some of you already know that I run my own door to door sales team here in

Tools and Resources for Solar Sales

00:12:27
Speaker
San Diego. And as we are gearing up for the summer, I realized if we do the same thing we always did, we're going to get the same results.
00:12:34
Speaker
But if I want to increase my deal flow, I need to do something different to get an advantage. Then we discovered an app called Solar Scout, but it's not a door knocking app. It's a data platform that shows us who is likely to go solar in our market.
00:12:48
Speaker
It shows us who has previously applied for solar but later canceled the deal, who has moved in recently, and even how much electricity the homes are using in a given neighborhood. It's been working for a lot of teams across the country and now I'm on board too. I'm going to be one of the first to use SolarScout in San Diego so I decided to partner up. But I told them, hey, I'm going to talk about SolarScout on my show, you need to give my listeners a great deal. And they did.
00:13:12
Speaker
So go to solarscout.app forward slash Taylor and book a demo with them and you'll get 10% off your first month when you sign up. That's solarscout.app forward slash Taylor.
00:13:25
Speaker
Okay, back to the show. What's up, solopreneurs? Hope you enjoyed the episode. Before you run out and start selling more solar yourself, wanted to let you know about an exciting new cheat sheet we created it specifically for you in mind.
