“Comfort is the enemy of greatness. Complacency is the enemy of your best self.”

Complacency kills momentum—and momentum, once lost, is brutally hard to get back. Greatness begins where comfort ends, and the longer you stay in your comfort zone, the more your dreams slip into a slow death. Resistance, as Steven Pressfield calls it, is that sneaky force that convinces you to stay put, to play small, to opt out. The only way through it is action. Cold water. Movement. Connection. Anything that shakes you out of the fog of “I’ll do it later.”

This one’s a call to arms. If you’re coasting on yesterday’s wins, it’s time to shake things up. The advice is simple and physical: plunge into something cold, get your body moving, and talk to another human. That’s how momentum gets reignited—not through thinking or planning, but doing. The excuses have to die before the dream does.

It’s hard either way. Discipline is hard, but so is regret. The discomfort of action is nothing compared to the pain of watching potential waste away. Choose your hard.

The Dangers of Complacency

00:00:58
Speaker
Welcome to another exciting episode of the podcast, The Thought Leader Revolution. I'm your host, Nicky Ballou, and we're doing another exciting Thought Leader Nugget. Let me talk about a powerful topic, a topic that you need to hear today.
00:01:13
Speaker
Comfort is the enemy of greatness. Complacency is the enemy of your best self. Complacency creates a trap where your dreams go to die.
00:01:30
Speaker
And let me talk a bit about complacency right now. There's a lot of folks in my ecosystem that I've worked with that we've gotten some great results for. And it just seems in the last couple of months, these results have made them complacent.
00:01:46
Speaker
They're like, yeah, I'd like to be more successful, but i don't know if I wanna put a ton effort into it. I don't know if wanna put a ton of effort into it at all. And I'm here to tell you something, guys. That is a mistake, a huge, huge mistake.
00:02:03
Speaker
Because if you allow yourself to get complacent, you are going to lose all the incredible momentum that you created for yourself. All the success that you've had is just going to drop.
00:02:19
Speaker
And momentum, once denied, is 10 times more difficult to get started. And if you're feeling complacent right now, if you're like, you know, I don't feel like doing this, wake your ass up, get yourself uncomfortable and get uncomplaisant.
00:02:39
Speaker
Because if you don't, you're screwed, blued and tattooed.

Fighting Resistance: Taking Action

00:02:45
Speaker
Your greatness. Your greatness begins at the end of your comfort zone.
00:02:51
Speaker
Your greatness begins when you look complacency in the eye and you slit its throat and you let it bleed out into the ground. Your greatness begins when you get mad.
00:03:05
Speaker
And that part of you that wants to keep you complacent. And that part of you that wants to keep you complacent is what Steven Pressfield in his immortal book, The War of Art, calls resistance with a capital R. What's resistance?
00:03:19
Speaker
It's that part of you that wants to kill your dreams, your ambitions, yeah yeah dead, dead. Don't let that happen to you. Do not let that happen to you. And if it's already happened, let me wake your ass up.
00:03:34
Speaker
Let me wake your ass up now. no Now, no now, now. Because you and the nobility of your soul deserve to become the best version of yourself.
00:03:50
Speaker
And that happens when you get up and you move on and you move out. That's a fact. That's a fact. There's nothing, nothing at all that you can do as long as you're in the grip of complacency and resistance.
00:04:10
Speaker
So here's some advice I have for you. If you're feeling complacent, jump in a tub of ice cold water for a day, not a whole day. But for a day, jump in a tub of ice cold water.
00:04:23
Speaker
Stay in there 10 seconds, 20 seconds, 30 seconds, a minute, whatever you want. But man, it'll get you out of your complacency in a minute, in a New York minute. Secondly, do some physical exercise. Go for a walk.
00:04:34
Speaker
You probably don't walk enough. I was just on vacation in Cartagena, Colombia, and I walked everywhere. People there walk a lot. Here, we're lazy. We take our cars everywhere. Walk.
00:04:45
Speaker
Cold water, plunge, walk. then pick up the phone and make a call to a fellow human being. It's time. The time is now. Now.
00:04:56
Speaker
Now. Not next week. Not next month. Now. no Now. Now. Take some action, man. Get off your butt. p Plunge in that cold water. Go for a walk.
00:05:09
Speaker
At least 20 minutes.

Choosing Action Over Regret

00:05:10
Speaker
Do one of those things immediately. Immediately. Don't give yourself any excuses. I can't do it now. I'm blah, blah, blah. now if you're work, I guess you can't do it now.
00:05:20
Speaker
But if you're not, no excuses. Cold water plunge, 20-minute walk. Choose your heart. Choose your heart. Because what's harder, getting yourself uncomfortable to achieve greatness or watching your dreams turn to ashes because you were too complacent to get up, move out,
00:05:43
Speaker
Move on and get into the real action you need to get into in order to win. Because either way, it's hard.

Final Thoughts and Call to Share

00:05:51
Speaker
You can choose the heart of discipline, action, or you can choose the heart of dead dreams lying in ashes and dust.
00:06:02
Speaker
And that wraps up another exciting episode of the Thought Leader Evolution. If you love this and you have a friend that needs to hear it, share it with them. If you didn't love it, it's probably because it scratched something in you that you don't want to have scratched.
00:06:18
Speaker
So listen to it till you love it. Until next time, goodbye.
