Speaker: Hello and welcome everybody to another episode of the Uncommon Wealth Podcast. where I'm your host Philip Ramsey. and Today, doing a solo cast. It's been great to do these last guests these last couple weeks, but I thought I would shoot a quick solo cast and just talk about just something that came up. I just got back from a live aboard, live aboard trip. It's a week long trip and usually it's scuba diving. You live on a boat and then you just wake up and you roll out of bed and you basically go diving all day.
Speaker: and it was awesome. And it was a smaller ship or boat. I don't what call boatership. I'm not sure what the qualifications are to change that, but it was a boat. And there were 18 divers, there was 12 crew members.
Speaker: And we're gonna jump all into that and really unpack that trip because John Shiplett, you know my adventurer that we go on these big trips, we will do a podcast together about that specifically, hopefully soon. But what I wanted to talk about is when you're in close quarters, I felt like I was very keen on this specific topic.
Speaker: and that is to contribute to conversations. Like I believe that uncommon people are always contributing to conversations. What does that mean? The opposite of contributing is taking away from conversations or pulling back or being selfish about conversations. But I think contributing to conversations means to ask good questions and encourage people along the way.
Speaker: And there was one specific person on the vote that was not contributing to any conversation. He was always one upping people like telling a story and being more elaborate. Like you would say, hey, I scuba dove in this area and he would say, well, I've scuba, I've done that and did this and kind of like one upped it. That to me is not contributing to the conversation. It actually is taking away from the conversation or he would ah degrade people. I mean, it was brutal. Like he was trying to prove something and maybe there's some issues there. Obviously there's some some deep rooted issues. But it was it was tough for me to be on a boat with this individual for all this week and seeing how many times he wasn't contributing to conversations. He wasn't asking good questions to hear what people had to say. He was always trying to be heard. And so
Speaker: When you're thinking about conversations or you're thinking about your dynamics when you go out along the the week, think about how you can contribute to people. Now, the funny thing ah is about this specific individual, we started playing games at one point, at cards, because you're on a boat for a week together. And so he ended up engaging in this game and he was doing really well and I was encouraging him like, hey, great job. And he was like, I don't even know how to process this. Like, are you making fun of me? Are you not? Now, the background that he has is probably not that way. like
Speaker: he was maybe made fun of or that's the way he shows affection to people. It's just not the way that I was brought up. And when I reversed the the whole dynamics and I was encouraging to him, he didn't even know how to process it. So I'm sure he was probably just as confused of why I wasn't processing how he was handling things and speaking to people in myself. But I was thinking about how important it is to always contribute to the conversations. hear people out, ask good questions when they're telling a story, have them be heard and listened to.
Speaker: And then I just didn't know how to respond. That's is probably feedback for me of like when somebody, like there was one time he was cussing people out. he was like, that's the way I talk to my friends. And he he was looking at me specifically. And and I said, that's funny.
Speaker: That's not the way I talk to my friends. And I thought he would have got the hint, but he did he didn't and just kind of kept going um along the week. And by the end, it was it was exhausting. And but anyway, maybe just for me. Maybe nobody else saw this in the in the in the boat, but definitely a very...
Speaker: dynamic, alpha kind of guy. And so I'm totally okay with submitting to that, especially because he was one that knew most of the people on the boat that were scuba divers.
Speaker: And yet I was getting very tired of the way that he was conducting himself and leading the group. And so you know that's probably not gonna go well. And it kind of came to a head towards the end of the week. and just I just said, hey, like,
Speaker: I'm done with this. Like we can't keep going on with you degrading or or being frustrated at other people when they're asking you to do something and and you get frustrated at them. Like it's just called helping people out and that's what leaders do.
Speaker: We can stop it there. but Are you contributing to your conversations in your life? Are you being uncommon? Are you encouraging people? Are you asking good questions? Are you trying not to one-up people? Are you always trying to make it about yourself? Again, i think we all do this in some sense. I totally am looking at myself with this, but thought it would be a good podcast to just send this out and just say, hey, be aware of the way that you conduct yourself with the people around you because people are watching and
Speaker: I believe the uncommon people are the ones who truly engage with people. They understand people. They want to get to know people. They want to hear people's stories. And then they also want to encourage people. So that's my podcast.
Speaker: Anyway, thanks for listening to Uncommon Love Podcast. Until next time, go be encouraging to somebody and a question. That's all for this episode brought to you by Uncommon Wealth Partners.
