Speaker: So excited to have Daniel Liscak, the bearded runner on the podcast today. Daniel's a Boston based runner, multiple time Boston marathoner. This year did the Boston London six day apart feet. Probably hear about that. And um Daniel's instantly recognizable in his Forrest Gump fit that everybody knows about ah running marathons in his Forrest Gump.

Speaker: kit which is awesome so man thank you so much for joining that runner's podium podcast for having me on david appreciate it and so let's jump right in um we're gonna go through the categories and first one is your top three most memorable running moments uh so not in order of like best to worst but running as forrest gump in the nike cortez's last year that was like my most memorable one um Then this year was being interviewed by BB Sport Live in London as Forrest Gump as well. That was incredible.

Speaker: And then just go back to Boston, crossing the finish line of the marathon in 2023, which was my first ever marathon and my first Boston marathon. It's amazing to have Boston be there first. Yeah, when I found that out within joining the Bulldogs within two weeks, I was like, holy shit, I'm running the Boston marathon.

Speaker: That's... Yeah. But hey, it was amazing. great You only found out ah not that much before you actually ran? No, I found out. No, no. I joined the Bulldogs back in September and then the application period was like right when I joined.

Speaker: And then two weeks after joining, they said, you're part of the team. And then here you go, start fundraising. So I had plenty of time, but it was just that it was a perfect timing of me joining the club. And I'm still part of the club. I'm actually one of the leaders at one of our chapters. So now I'm, you know,

Speaker: up a little bit higher up within the running club. so Seems like it's a strong club vibe there, that the Bulldogs. We are a running club. We've been around for 11 years, but our main thing isn't running. It's the community aspect and bringing everyone together and then running comes second. That's so awesome. It's amazing. love that. All right. What about your top three running shoes?

Speaker: Could be racing or just everyday trainers. like What do you love? so I love the Adidas Boston 13. The Mizuno Hyperwarp Elite and the A6 Superblast 3. It's a little combo of everything. Is that your race shoe? The Hyperwarp Elite was my race shoe in Boston.

Speaker: The Boston 13 I've been using a lot for speed work. It's just a nice, great up-tempo shoe with the little with the those those rods that they put in there. And then the Superblast is just, i don't know lightweight and bouncy. has a little trampoline effect to it. It's just nice.

Speaker: just helps you cruise along. So it's good for daily daily training, speed work, temp work, whatever you want to do. Nice variation. So what about your top three running moments that didn't go as planned? This year. i think we all have. This year in Boston, mile 11, it hit me, or mile 10, and I had to go to the potty six five times over an eight-mile period, and that just destroyed me.

Speaker: ah Last week, I ran the beach and back half marathon. I thought I going to go in and just drop the hammer and use it as a training run. And within five miles, I got hit with little heat exhaustion, slight, it's called a mild heat stroke, and it just took me out.

Speaker: And then I tried to, on the way, do the Sharon Triathlon back in 2023 with... No training in swimming and little to no biking. And DNF myself at the 250 meter part of the swimming course. I was like, I'm training for New York. I'm good. i can i can I'm good at endurance and all this shit.

Speaker: No, no, no, no, no. Swimming is a different animal. And it was opens open water. I've never swam in open water. I had no wetsuit. No, nothing. was just me and a pair of shorts. And I was like, all right let's do this. That's hilarious. I'm not doing that. I'm not doing an Ironman. I'm out.

Speaker: Running it is crazy. Yeah, the triathlon is a different different beast entirely. And yeah, that swim is crazy. Getting used to all these people in the water, swimming in open water. i was getting swatted. I was like, what is going on? I just i hung on. I'm like, nope, I'm done. Waving the white flag. Got picked up by jet ski and was great.

Speaker: Nice. At least you weren't too time invested in at that point. You're like, no, no this ain't for me. um What about your top three um pieces of essential gear? Handheld water bottle. The Amphipod 20 ounce is just perfect amount of fluids to hold.

Speaker: ah Of course, gels. And I never thought I would say this, but my Shox headphones. like i just I need them now. like I love listening to music while I run, which yeah was not the same for me a few years ago.

Speaker: But now being able to listen to the cars around me and music, it's it's actually enjoyable. Yeah, it's the cut it's like the combo of um not wearing headphones, and so you have some kind of like awareness of what's happening, and then you can listen to music. What do you listen to?

Speaker: Whatever is on my playlist. I literally just shazam something, and it just goes in, and then I just shuffle it. I just go i just let it shuffle. That's it. There's sometimes where I have to play a song on repeat if I'm doing like a...

Speaker: some type of like 800 meter repeat and I have multiple and I just want to listen to the same song again to that groove. But usually it's just whatever goes on. It can be played 1970s rock to like house music with David Getter or something. It's just, it's everywhere.

Speaker: It's everywhere. Cool. So that was the handheld, the shocks. What was the second one? Just gels. Yeah. Oh, yeah. So what gels do you use? I've been on a honey stinger kick.

Speaker: I've been loving honey stinger. doesn't upset my stomach. I'll still do Morton's if I have to because it's one of the few that is that works, but it's primarily honey stinger. I'll do that. Nice. just straight up gold. no No caffeine, no flavor, just honey. That's it.

Speaker: You never do the caffeine ever? and If I do caffeine, it has to be the Morton's caffeine. I can't do like the honey stinger one. It just it really gets to my stomach. It needs to be like the straight gel with caffeine. That's it.

Speaker: No. You think that's what happened in Boston? like What happened? I took bicarb. And i I did take bicarb in the past, but I think I was in such a rush, I miscalculated the amount of water that goes in with the powder and I might have diluted it too much. So I think the pellets hit my stomach faster. And I also crushed a few of them in my mouth and swallowed them by accident. So I just i think it just destroyed my gut and just – it was – no. It was – It was a tummy ache from, yeah, no. Bicarb is a different animal. It's tough.

Speaker: I've never tried it. I tried yesterday and that was a funny one. I i took four spoonfuls and I almost threw up again. i have taken in the past and and it does work. It it does work, but it's it's getting past the consistency. Like if you can't do Morton's, you're not going to do this stuff. It's just gross.

Speaker: But it it gives you like such carb power. Yeah, like i when I ran the Duxbury half this past year, I was just like, oh I'll just do 140, just a nice training run. And I started doing like 620s at mile 3 or 4, and I felt like was floating on a cloud. Never had never had any lactic acid buildup. I never felt any pain, no nothing.

Speaker: It suppresses all that buildup. it's it's it It works. It really does work. Wow. Yeah. Crazy. I recommend it. I mean, maybe do the Morton's. It it looks like it's a little bit better consistency of the way it like falls. This other stuff is very goopy and proceed with caution. Yeah. So if you don't like oysters too, then you're probably not going like this.

Speaker: What about your top three running pet peeves? So that can be like with your training, with running in general, with other runners, does anything come to mind? I want to start off with but not the first the least controversial one, is just winter running.

Speaker: I hate it. I hate it. Fair. The next one is going to be when people are at the crosswalk, they hit it and then they just go, but the signal is still amber. I'm like, dude, you just like hit the thing and now we got to wait, but you're just going. It's like, why hit it? Oh, man.

Speaker: And the last one is, frank I'm going to be hated for this one, but it is what it is, is when people self-seed up front with the faster runners and they whip out their selfie sticks and their phones and they start recording at a 10-minute pace.

Speaker: I'm sorry, but if you're going to do that, just respect the runners around you and just go back. If you're going to film, film all you want, but like you got to be careful because it it it's...

Speaker: It happened yesterday, so I just kept my mouth shut. But it's that's my biggest pet peeve. I will be on my phone. I will take photos. But you got to be in the same pace as everyone else around you. I'm going to get slapped for this, and that's okay.

Speaker: Corral jump. Yeah, like do not do that. like They say, self-seed. These are the paces. And then you're going, and you're like, why are you here? Why is that selfie stick here? like Go back, please. yeah Enjoy your race. Everyone deserves to have their own race. But like it becomes ah an issue.

Speaker: Yeah, in New York, like our NYRR races, they're pretty strict. Have you done any of the New York races? The the united United Half, the one that was – Yeah, did that one. Yeah, you did Half. You can see like they're pretty strict about it, but I have done some other races when I've traveled or like been in other places where you basically – like you say, like there really isn't corrals. It's just like – estimating like oh if you're faster go up to the front and yeah you just get some people that are lined up like right at the front and it's like dude you're gonna get you are and then like people get hurt and you're wondering why it's like well it's you did it to yourself like I'm not trying to be a jerk or nothing it's just don't know common sense just use common sense that's all yeah

Speaker: And it also just makes it so crowded in that front little area because everyone's like, but I got to be first over the line. It's like, unless you're winning this race, your gun time doesn't matter, dude. Yeah, I know.

Speaker: But um what about your top three favorite races? So that doesn't necessarily mean like your best time, but just like your favorite experience of racing. love London. that I would love, if I can do that over and over and over, I'll do that 100% all the time.

Speaker: ah Duxbury half, it's just, small 300 person half marathon it's just fun easy to get to and then you're probably gonna say why i didn't say boston but i'm gonna chicago that's another one that i love it's just it's like a new york but just flatter easier to get to between like people cheering you on and i don't know the crowds are just awesome and the live music Yeah. It's ah becoming a theme of this podcast on favorite races is like London.

Speaker: People are constantly saying London. I'm noticing. The vibe there is just so much fun. The people are just incredible. Like if you don't go, haven't gone there because you've heard of things on the internet, just go.

Speaker: You got to go to experience it like for yourself because it's, it's, it's amazing. oh And you need to go for a full week because there's a lot to do in London. And if you catch it on a good week like I did and the weather was perfect, it's beautiful. Streets are clean.

Speaker: People are nice. Food is incredible. um Yeah, it's it's a fun time. It's a fun time. And they just announced, I think it's official that they're doing two days. two Saturday, Sunday. But I don't know if it's this year only and they're testing it.

Speaker: the way i read The way I read into it. It's like as if they're doing it this year only. like ah But I could be wrong. I don't know. i I'm just glad I did it when I did it because now I'm just like, i don't have to deal with that stuff.

Speaker: Yeah, that's crazy. There's some real... How they're going to see... Are they going to just say all professors can only run on one day so they get equal opportunity to race? Or are they going to do... For us, conventional runners, they're going like, you run whatever you run, but how are they going to do the elites like they are going to run just one day or split them? That's going to be interesting. Do you do men one day and women another yeah.

Speaker: And like, what if one day is like super hot or like one day is pouring rain? It's like, everyone's going to try to run the other day. I don't know. I'm sure you're going to have a certain set day, but yeah, it seems complicated. It'll be interesting to see how it folds out.

Speaker: Cool. And I love your addition of the ah local yeah one in Duxport. That's like south of Boston, right? Yeah, it's going towards like the Cape. South Shore. Yeah, by Plymouth. Yeah, it's just it's just a fun... Beautiful down there, right?

Speaker: It's inexpensive. It's easy. Like I said, easy to get to. Rolling hails, it's ah three weeks before Boston. See you're running Boston, it's a perfect fitness level check. It's perfect. It's great.

Speaker: Good weather. It might be cold, but you're not going to over it. Oh, yeah. You won't. Usually rains, but last year, this year was pretty cold, but it was like 55. It was a perfect half marathon temp.

Speaker: Nice. And what about your top three favorite places to run? I said you're Boston. Are you like in the city, Boston? Or do do you live down near Duxbury? Where do you live? Yeah. So, so yeah. Yeah. So.

Speaker: So, top three favorite places to run, would one of those be in the... Yeah, yeah so... in that area Castle Island, of course, would be one because it's just nice to run along like Carson Beach and go by the castle. And then you can see the planes landing into Logan, which is my... I come from an aviation background, so I just love just being able to see planes get on final approach. So that's like my favorite.

Speaker: Running along to Charles is great as well. yeah but When you're up here next time, just let me know so we can go because that's a fun place to go. And then i love that just kind of anywhere with my Boston Bulldogs, honestly.

Speaker: So that can be anywhere with the with the Quincy chapter or just the race that we all do together. Your crew. That's it. My crew. Nice. And what about top three recovery tools or foods?

Speaker: Any type of um protein afterwards, like a shake is preferred. so But my my top one is the Tailwind strawberry flavored one.

Speaker: Nice. my Theragun. And lastly, I kind of started this year as ah compression boots. You rocked the compression boots. Someone else did that on Yeah, I haven't done while, but they're good. And you don't have to get the $800 ones. You can go Amazon pay a buck 80 and that's it.

Speaker: And they're the same same thing. Same big old block, same 25-minute compression cycle from feet up to your up through your thighs, your calves, everything. It's the same.

Speaker: It's just branded differently. And so after your long run, you just put those on and chill for a bit kind of thing? Yeah, the 25-minute one. I set it to 100 inches of mercury. So i really you can go up to 120. I've done 110. That's pushing it. 120 is pretty aggressive. I haven't tried that yet.

Speaker: But yeah, if you do it after long run, you feel like a un new person. And allegedly, you're only supposed to do it two times a day in max because then you don't get the max return on doing the compression. Okay. But you feel like, I guess it just like increases the blood flow, helps with any inflammation. and Any buildup, yeah, that's all. I took him to with me to London and ah that was the thing. If you're traveling to a abroad...

Speaker: with that altitude change, just do that too right away. You feel like a new person. Nice. Awesome. All right. Can you just leave us with one last thought for runners, something that you've come to after years of training and running and all your experiences?

Speaker: I'm going to just, yeah, it's what the Boston Bulldogs have taught me is just show up because you never know what's going to happen. You might have the shittiest training block ever and you're in your head and you just show up for your race and it ends up being exactly what you're looking for, but you didn't expect it to happen because you don't know what's going happen. So just show up. I love it. You heard it here.

Speaker: Daniel, the bearded runner representing. Thank you so much for joining Thank you, David, for having me on.
